F

ather’s Day is celebrated worldwide in recognition of the contribution fathers make to the lives of their children. In the UK it takes place on the third Sunday in June which this year is the 21st. Some believe it is associated with pagan sun worship as the sun is known as the father of the universe and the June solstice occurs around the same time as Father’s Day. The UK followed the USA’s lead when, in 1910, Sonara Smart Dodd decided after listening to a Mother’s Day Sermon there should be something similar for fathers. Grahame

The area’s longest-established, independent family firm

For the fourth successive year Fowlers sponsored the Design a Poster competition at Billingshurst Primary School and this year more children than ever took part. With competition running high Fowlers found it hard to reach a decision; however the three winners pictured here with Keith from Fowlers were Zoe Lewis, Marli Wright Thompson and Isabella Holland. All winners received a prize for their hard work, with the overall winner being Marli Wright Thompson. Keith Hutchinson, director of the Billingshurst office said “We are very proud to sponsor the poster competition for the fourth year in a row and as ever we were extremely impressed with the creativity of the pupils”. The excellent photography was kindly taken by Alan Wright Photography who is based in Billingshurst.

Horsham District foodbank in Billingshurst

H

ave you had an unexpected bill that’s left you wondering how you’ll feed the children at the end of the month? Have your benefits been delayed so that you know you won’t be able to buy food this week? Not sure where the next meal’s coming from? You’re not alone and there is help out there! Organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau, your Housing Association if you’re a tenant and the Children and Family Centre if you have children aged 11 or under all hold vouchers for referral to the Horsham District foodbank for three days’ emergency food. Staff will ask about your situation and, if you’re in crisis, may give you a foodbank voucher if appropriate. Vouchers are also available from the church office at 74A High Street, Billingshurst and from Father Carl at St Gabriel’s Church in the village. The foodbank is open to people who have a voucher once a week on Friday mornings from 10am until 12 noon, in the United Reformed Church, on the roundabout at the corner of West Street and High Street and volunteers there will welcome you with a cup of tea or coffee

and biscuits. When you hand over your voucher, you’ll be asked about a preference for tea or coffee, rice or pasta, tinned meat or veg for your food parcel and there’ll be somewhere to sit down to wait while your food is being packed up. The food parcel will contain three days’ worth of emergency food and there are usually toiletries, toilet roll and chocolate or other treats available too. If you need help with budgeting, support to sort out debts or benefits, would like to talk to someone about how to cook nutritious meals on a budget, or just want to chat, foodbank volunteers can point you in the right direction or just provide a listening ear. You can stay and talk or leave as soon as your food parcel is packed up – all are welcome whatever their circumstances. But please don’t go to the foodbank without a voucher – the foodbank volunteers hate turning people away! For more information see the Trussell Trust website, www.trusselltrust.org, or contact Horsham Matters on tel: (01403) 211833 or e-mail: support@horsham-matters.org.uk. Ruth Hodgson, Horsham Matters

The Power of Positive Thought Positivity… Many people think that it means looking to the future for things to get better. “I will be happy when I get that promotion” or “I’ll be happier still when I get a bigger house”. This is wishful thinking, keeping you in a state of wanting, not enjoying now. Positive thinking, however, is the ability to reprogram your subconscious mind replacing all negative thoughts with positive ones. This is definitely possible. You need to start becoming consciously aware of your ‘inner chatter’ such as “I can’t do this”, “I’m stupid” or “I’m scared of writing the presentation” or even “I’m fat, no one will love me”. There are hundreds, however none of them real, simply words picked up from the past that have no purpose or relevance to you today. They are negative beliefs counteracting positive actions. Change your thoughts and change your world, there are no limits… If you’d like to know more and want to change your outlook on life come along to ‘The Power of Positive Thought’, a free discussion at Kettlesbridge Farm, West Chiltington Lane, Coneyhurst on Saturday 20th June, 10-12 noon. Book reviews / Health and wellbeing

A Good Read June’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night – Mark Haddon Wellington is dead. He was killed with a fork. That’s not quite so odd though. It was a garden fork. Discovering the body of his neighbour’s dog, 15-yearold Christopher is determined to find out what happens so he decides to do some ‘detecting’. What he discovers will tell him so much more than just who killed Wellington. As a reader you see the world through Christopher’s eyes. A world where maths is in charge and helps to make sense of everything. A world where seeing five red cars in a row is a sign of a ‘super good day.’ Christopher has Asperger’s Syndrome: a form of high functioning autism. This means that he doesn’t see things the same as others do. Facial expressions are difficult to decode – his teacher gives him clues to help him – and metaphors are just confusing and don’t really help you to understand things because you have to spend so much time trying to work out what it means. This highly acclaimed novel is an insight into a world inhabited by many people, but alien to most of the population. Haddon also brings out the difficulties of raising a child with Asperger’s. His widowed father tries to be patient but struggles with the lack of emotion from his son. In many ways Christopher has a better way of coping with life as he can shut himself away in a world ruled by algebra, patterns and prime numbers.

Written in the first person, Christopher’s ‘voice’ is distinctive and original. As the novel draws towards its rewarding ending you will feel reluctant to leave him as he takes the next steps through life, telling us, “I can do anything.” And like many people with Asperger’s, he just might. Jack Stalwart: The deadly race to space: Russia – Elizabeth Singer Hunt Most nine-year-olds only have school to worry about. Jack’s life is a bit more complicated than that. He is a secret agent. It must run in the family as his older brother Max was also a secret agent – only he has now gone missing. Jack must travel around the world battling some of the most dangerous villains there are, in the hope that he will one day find Max. In this book (the ninth in the series) Jack must find the space project’s chief engineer who has gone missing on the eve of the launch of manned mission to Mars. With his spy gadgets, such as gripper gloves and a mind eraser, this appears to be straightforward, but Jack is in for a shock. The Jack Stalwart books are aimed at young readers aged 7 and over and appear to be a natural draw for boys of this age. Hunt cleverly mixes fiction and non-fiction in this series. Each book is set in a different country and contains factual information as part of the story, plus ‘fact file’ pages in the book. This age is a tricky one when it comes to reading, especially for boys, and the fast-pace of the story, plus the non-fiction aspect is a definite plus.

Sussex Egyptology Society

H

ave you ever wondered why the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt were buried with so much treasure, or what was the purpose of the beautiful tomb and temple wall art? How did this ancient civilization build the magnificent pyramids of Giza and how did they mummify the great kings, preserving their bodies for thousands of years? If the answer is yes, then why not join us at one of our monthly lecture meetings. At the Sussex Egyptology Society we bring the best Egyptologists from around the world to the heart of Sussex. We hold our meetings at three sites across Sussex in rotation; Worthing, Horsham and Brighton. In addition to our monthly lecture programme, we also hold study days. Our most recent have included Understanding Ancient Egyptian Temples and Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs for beginners.

The Society also arranges special trips with unique behind the scenes access for members and guests. Our last trip was to Oxford and included a special viewing of the Amelia Edwards art collection and privileged access to rare documents from the earliest Egyptology records at the Griffith Institute. Our lectures are held once a month and start at 2pm and finish at around 4pm. Doors open at 1.30pm and there is a break halfway through when light refreshments are available for a small charge. Entrance costs just ÂŁ4 which is refunded if you subsequently become a member. Interested? Then please visit our website www.egyptology-uk.com for details of our next lecture or contact the Membership Secretary on 07914 339430. Healing paint! Pottery painting is both therapeutic and fun!

M

any people don’t consider doing anything creative as a leisure activity and they are missing out! There is also a misconception, amongst some, that art shouldn’t be attempted unless you have a great talent for it, which would exclude most people. Pottery painting is an enjoyable way to unwind. Focusing the mind and using the imagination has a natural calming effect on our bodies, helping us relax and be happy. So why not re-discover your enjoyment of being arty, and create a unique and personal piece of ceramic. At The Colour Cauldron, there are plenty of items to choose from, such as

plates, cups, mugs, figures, vases and trinket boxes. Have a birthday or family party, paint with a partner or group of friends or put baby footprints on a plate. It’s all good fun. Call Jane with any enquiries or bookings, or just come and have a look. We are open Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30am till 4pm; Sunday and evenings for groups and parties by arrangement. We are also open Mondays, state school holidays and Bank Holidays. Jane Keogh The Colour Cauldron, Smithbrook Kilns, Cranleigh, Surrey GU6 8JJ. Tel: (01483) 548652. www.colourcauldron.co.uk

Community / About the house

Are YOU warm enough? John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by. t last we are entering the months of full summer and from gardeners and growers all over the country sighs of relief can be heard as they relax after the dramas of spring. All right… I know… what dramas? Well, to those of you who are keen growers of any kind, spring is the annual period of worry and fretting about the tender plants and vulnerable blossoms that fill our gardens and orchards, Nature has amongst her armoury of variables the ability to make sure that no matter how great our past experience, she is bound to have yet another twist when it comes to keeping us guessing as to how she is going to behave. She can be cruel at times as even the creatures we think are all knowing of her ways get it tragically wrong. A few years ago spring came late. Very late. The oaks came to leaf long after the tits had started their nesting. The huge feast of caterpillars that the oaks would normally have given these lovely birds was not there and a huge loss of chicks from that first lay was inevitable. We ourselves feel protected from most of these vagrancies nowadays, but they are nonetheless a problem that will peer ever more over our shoulders in the years to come. That nature’s timing has altered is beyond doubt. For fruit growers such as myself, the timing of the years passing is a constant measurement that we follow with close scrutiny. 50 years ago we would expect that full bloom in our orchards would occur around the 12th-15th May. Now it’s the end of April to around the 7th May. As a result the chance of frost damage to the blossom has advanced by some ten days too. At the other end of the summer months, harvest times have moved up as well. I can remember still picking the last of the Bramleys in late October with the first of the frosts clinging to the fruit in the early morning. Now, most of the crop would be tucked away in store before the chill started, only a few varieties that need a longer summer are still to be gathered by then. Varieties I might add that a few years ago we would never have attempted to grow as it was regarded that our summer was just not warm enough or long enough to bring them to harvest. I have noticed that in the last few years the early flowers that brighten the ditches and woodlands have been

A

forced to speed up their flowering in the first warmth of springs. Primrose, celandine and wood anemone race to get their flowers pollinated before the bluebells appear, who in turn try to out run the opening canopy of the trees that will soon darken their woodland floor. This race has always occurred of course, but there is little doubt that it has over the years moved to an ever earlier period of the year. We in our gardens have followed nature’s lead. The garden centres display multitudes of quite delicate plants at times that would have once been unheard of. Trouble comes though when the weather changes just a trifle and we wake up to the crisp, white blanket of a spring frost. Oh well, back to the garden centre! The plants we are now using has altered greatly too. We have become accustomed to planting things that were once only thought of as ‘exotics’. Peaches and apricot are happily surviving the whole year outside with no protection. In fact there is one grower on the Isle of Wight who has some 14 acres of apricots, and still plans to plant more. That’s one heck of a lot of fruit on a cropping year. We have all seen the explosion of vineyards that have sprung up all over our county, once just a novelty, now a very serious horticultural crop. The Romans successfully grew grapes here during their time on our shores and growers are now finding the resulting wines can match, and often surpass, our continental cousins’ best efforts. It was once thought that to make a million pounds growing vines in the UK you needed to start with two million. Now our warmer climate is proving a much more reliable aid to turning the grape into profit. There is a downside of course (there always is). The milder winter is allowing many diseases and pests to get through the winter unscathed and we are seeing problems from other countries that would once have succumbed to our winter’s chill or our summer’s variability. So, are we winners or losers? As ever, there are points that go both ways. I can only speak here for myself, but I reckon the positives outweigh the negatives by a growing margin. I am guilty here though of ignoring the general worldwide issues of ‘global warming’. The fact that our climate has altered has certainly happened in my lifetime, but whether it is permanent, or just a ‘blip’ is something that our children will perhaps be able to confirm. All I know is that I shall enjoy the early warmth, raise a glass of local vino, and wonder if the peaches will crop as heavily as they did last year! John Nash

When choosing an agent, most people tend to consider who they feel has the best board presence or have historically had the major market share. Invariably, we all hope to deal with somebody we like and personality is certainly a factor. In some instances vendors consider aspects of the marketing process of a particular agent. These things are merely the tip of the iceberg. What should be a major consideration, the two main aspects of the role of an agent are to market the unique features of a property and secure the best possible price from the best available purchaser. There can be little doubt; the agent that is most enthusiastic about your property and its potential value is truly worth your investment. The market over the last eighteen months has been supported by very low supply, so little in fact the increased demand cannot be met. Increases to values can be spotted much earlier in towns and cities with more densely populated areas. Our multi office arrangement has certainly assisted us in spotting the market trends across West Sussex and

01403 780300 you can do agent‌ thus provided huge benefits to our selling clients. We have two sales going through our Billingshurst office at the moment in different price ranges whereby the vendors have agreed sales at 8% over their highest valuation with our local competitors. On a property at £350,000 that 8% would work out to an extra £28,000. Vendors that chose a lower asking price and sold within a week must surely consider the possibility they may have undersold their property. In times where various approaches to the task of selling property abound, it is our belief that estate agents with traditional values who genuinely look after their vendor as top priority are the best choice. There are agents now offering strategies where the buyer pays the fees, who are the agents representing in these scenarios? If you are thinking of moving and are considering inviting three agents to give you advice relating to marketing and values, please make us one of your choices. We can demonstrate numerous specific cases of our success and answer the question of what, as your agent, we can do for you.

Garden Tweet! / Pest control

Never too late…

G

ardening is an ongoing affair and though timing is important, we often become overwhelmed by a sense of being ‘too late to plant’ by some arbitrary date. Often we bandy dates around as though they were written in stone. My granddad insisted all potatoes and spring beans had to be sown by Good Friday, and the gooseberry bush had to be in leaf before the runner beans were sown. But in fact each season is different and garden planting dates are more flexible than traditional wisdom would have us believe! The good news is that it’s not too late to plant a great garden, even in June and July. While it is true that fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers really need to be set out now, many other summer producers will grow even more quickly from seeds planted in early summer, when the soil is already well warmed. You’ll be surprised how fast seeds will come up and explode with growth: cucumbers, beans and winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, chard and scallions, are all suitable for June planting. It’s a great time to start a crop of ‘cut and come again’ salad mix and mild mustards. You can also plant heat-and-sun-loving herbs like basil, marjoram, chives, oregano, thyme and sage. Just keep the seed beds well moistened.

And even if you were super-efficient and your early-planted beans, squash, chard, carrots and basil plants are growing well, June is a terrific time to start a second crop to have ready for a late summer harvest, when the first crops of these staples have finished up. I usually start seeds every month, finishing sowing summer-producing vegetables in late June. In July and August, I move on to seeds for autumn crops like spinach, radishes, kale, leeks, peas, broccoli, more mild mustards and some pak choi. June is not too late for flowers either. I’ve planted marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and nasturtiums at this time of year. That way when the first annuals have burned out by late summer I have a lovely smaller flush of blooms to enjoy. If you really want to get ahead, June and July are also good times to start seeds for perennials and biennials to bloom next spring. Sow seeds in a protected seed bed, and then transplant seedlings in the autumn to overwinter. Next spring you’ll be rewarded handsomely with garden full of glorious colour. Enjoy your garden. Wisborough Weekend 5th-7th June Open Gardens… Summer Festival and live music on the Green… Festival of Flowers and concerts in St Peter’s Church

W

isborough Green’s Open Gardens weekend takes place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June. This has become a hugely popular event and is the perfect opportunity to have a nose around some fabulous gardens, big and small, get a few tips along the way and then take afternoon tea or enjoy a glass of Pimms, relaxing in the gorgeous surroundings. Tickets (£10, valid for both days) and maps are available on the 6th and 7th from the Marquee on the Green and the gardens will be open 11am-5pm both days, with teas served from 2pm. The theme of this year’s Festival of Flowers at St Peters Church is ‘Hymns of Glory’ which offers individual interpretations of many well loved hymns in flowers. The festival will run for three days from June 5th7th, 10am-5pm. The church is a beautiful space and the stonework, pillars and windows provide an inspiring backdrop for getting creative with flowers. So please do come along and support this venture

in aid of the Church Redevelopment Fund. Refreshments will be available nearby. Also in the church over the weekend, an Organ Recital on Friday evening at 7pm and a Concert on Saturday evening at 7pm featuring Ferio, an exciting young saxophone quartet. Tickets are £10 on the door or in advance from the number at the end of this article. Details at www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk Also taking place on the Green on Saturday 6th is the Wisborough Green Primary School Summer Festival (from 12 noon-7pm). This year, in addition to loads of stalls, exciting displays, inflatables plus a range of refreshments, the event is topped off by live music starting at 3pm from local band The Blues Issue and Wisborough Green’s own Rock Docteurs. (See panel below.) For further information on any of the above events please call (01403) 700946 Kate Perry

Be ready to rock… at Wisborough Green Primary School’s sizzling Summer Festival

M

ark your calendars and dust off your dancing shoes in readiness for the inaugural Wisborough Green Primary School Summer Festival. The summer sizzler is taking place on Saturday 6th June from 12 noon-7pm on the village green. Newly extended, bigger than ever and totally reshaped, it will offer all the old summer fair favourites but add late afternoon live music for all the family. The WGPS Summer Festival will be opened at 12 noon by a procession of all the children from the school, led by the newly crowned May Queen in a fittingly splendid carriage. There will be Maypole and country dancing, a tug of war, giant inflatables, dozens of stalls, exciting displays and oodles of yummy refreshments. Whatever the weather, there will be something for everyone. In a new departure, this year the event will be topped off by live music from two local bands who will play as the picnic blankets come out, and on into the early evening.

36

Taking first to the balcony of Wisborough Green’s cricket pavilion will be Blues Issue. Hailing from Brighton and described as “ten-handed, twelve-barrelled, rockin’ blues”, they will start playing about 3pm. The finale to the whole event will be just what the doctor ordered. Wisborough Green’s Alan Young aka Dr Al very own Rock Docteurs prescribe a bit of music therapy to end the afternoon. Join them for some upbeat rock and pop, feel-good covers with a rock edge, from classics through to present day. A few unusual hits get the Doc’s treatment too. Please be ready to rock! So, as the sun goes down, enjoy hog roast, pizza and refreshments as you kick off your shoes and lie back to the sizzling sounds of summer. The whole event is just one part of a great Wisborough Weekend as the village’s popular Open Gardens and Festival of Flowers will also be taking place across the same weekend. Vanda Rumney

An Introduction to Carriage Driving

H

ave you ever thought of doing something different? If so, why not give carriage driving a try? This sport is becoming more accessible and is proving very a very popular pastime. Driving is ideal for those looking to be involved with horses but no longer able or have the desire to ride. It is also a fabulous way to give an outgrown child’s pony a new career. What makes a good driving horse or pony? Horses and ponies of any shape and size can be driven, the most vital thing is temperament. A driving horse must have impeccable manners and be able to stand patiently for extended periods of time; he must also be obedient and brave as well as forward going and willing. How do I get involved? There are many carriage driving clubs up and down the country. You can find the secretary’s number on the clubs’ websites for the areas you are interested in. By going along to a few events and meetings you will get a feel of whether it is the right activity and club for you. Once you have decided you want to go ahead and learn the club can put you in touch with a carriage driving instructor who will be able to teach you the ropes with an experienced horse or pony. NEVER try to break a horse to harness yourself if you have little or no experience. Once you have gained plenty of driving hours and are confident and proficient you can apply to be assessed; you will need this assesment if you want to compete at a later date. Driving for the disabled is also a superb way to get involved in the world of carriage driving and new volunteers are always welcomed with open arms. By now you will be itching to get your own pony and carriage. You can buy a ready-made driving pony or opt to have one of your own sent away and broken to harness. If you choose the latter option it is vital that the horse or pony is comfortable with and understands every step of the process. One thing an owner can do is to get in plenty of hours of long lining before the horse goes away to training. Always get an expert to put the horse to the carriage for the first time. You will also need a level headed and sensible friend with good horse sense to be your groom and backstep. The most important piece of equipment is a well fitting

harness; this must be adjusted and fitted with the utmost comfort of the horse in mind. Harness can be made of leather or synthetic material, choice will be down to personal taste and which disciplines you in which you wish to partake. Take expert advice when choosing a carriage, there is something to suits all tastes and disciplines. Make sure it is not too heavy for the horse or pony as not only will it be harder to pull, but also harder to stop! Most people who are new to the sport will start with a four-wheeled exercise carriage. What activities can I take part in? As with riding there is a discipline to suit everyone in the world of carriage driving. Showing. As in the ridden world you are judged as an overall picture. There are classes to suit all from Novice whip right up to the elegant realms of Private Driving and Concours d’elegance. Attention to detail and a mannerly horse are the most important attributes. Pleasure drives. These are social occasions organised by harness clubs where like minded enthusiasts meet up and drive, often on land not accessible to the general public. A brilliant way to spend the day and you will learn a great deal from other carriage drivers. Horse Driving trials. A very popular and exciting sport consisting of three phases: a dressage test, a cones section, and an obstacle section. There are classes for singles, tandems and teams. This sport makes a great day out for competitors and spectators alike. Indoor driving trials are also very popular over the winter months and very exciting to watch in the confines of an arena! Scurry. This is an adrenaline fuelled fast paced sport in which a pair of ponies are driven around an obstacle course against the clock. It is very exciting to watch but even better to participate in being enormous fun as well as very competitive! I hope this article has given you some insipration to try something new! Dingo Adventures (Or Misadventures?) Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

D

ingo quivered with excitement as Grandad turned the key to start the engine. It was his first time for ‘proper’ work and he was ready to go. Nan attached the trailer onto his hitch and filled it with hay for the pig ark, and Grandad drove it over, and Nan unloaded it and pushed it into the ark for the ungrateful pigs who moaned and grunted and refused to move over so the hay would be evenly distributed. Grandad tried to turn Dingo around, but the trailer jackknifed and had to be taken off. Then Grandad had go to and fro in a seven-point-turn to turn Dingo around; he put the trailer back on and finally rode back to the hay store for hay for the sheep’s ark. Unfortunately as this was back in January, the sheep paddock was very muddy and it was hard work getting Dingo and the trailer through the paddock to the It wasn’t meant to ark. But Dingo put his best efforts in and managed. After unloading the hay, it was time for the photoshoot for the Tweet. Grandad and Dingo looked so good together and Nanny beamed with pride for her ‘men’. Photos ‘in the can’ it was time for Dingo to go home to his shed. He couldn’t move. The ground was too muddy and something was stopping him. He tried and tried and he could not move. Grandad was cross, got off and muttered unkind things about Dingo. Dingo was so ashamed, but he couldn’t help it. An ATV just can’t go very well with a very flat tyre in the mud can it? Grandad and Nan took the trailer off and between them pulled it back to the shed. Then it was Dingo’s turn. He is very heavy and it took a lot of effort and Grandad and Nan were exhausted by the time he was put away. Grandad took his wheel off, took it to a tyre place only to be told… there was nothing wrong with

it! It just needed to have a bit more air in it. Of course when Grandad put the wheel back on he dropped one of the nuts into the mud and Nanny had to come and help him find it. Finally Dingo was back together and ready to work again. His next outing was with Nan. She put her new Christmas trolley on the back, and went down to the big paddock to do some fencing. Dingo worked like a dream and Nan just loved riding him. But then she stopped by the sheep ark to fiddle with something and when she got onto Dingo, he wouldn’t start. He tried and tried but he just couldn’t. Nanny was getting desperate and fetched Grandad to look at him. (Grandad was much better than her at mechanical things.) Grandad grumbled but he couldn’t find anything at all wrong with Dingo. Then, for the second be like this… time in his short life, Dingo had to be pushed through the mud. It was even muddier now as it had rained. On the way Grandad slipped and he found himself on his knees in the mud. He was seriously cross now! Finally Dingo was back in his shed and feeling very sad. Nan and Grandad looked at his petrol pump indicator. It was on ‘reserve tank’ and the glass filter thingy was empty. “Hmmm,” said Grandad. He turned the petrol pump indicator to ‘on’. Before long, the glass thingy started to fill. Grandad turned Dingo’s key and his motor purred into action. After all an ATV can’t go very well with no fuel in its engine can it? Nan was so relieved. It wasn’t her Dingo’s fault after all. He is now a much loved and sturdy helper and has subsequently been well used carrying straw and tools and saving Nanny many trips back and forth over the little farm near Billingshurst. Cottage Farm Dog Training

Cottage Farm Pet Boarding

Training has been shown to be the single most important thing that keeps a dog in his or her “forever home.

Our dog boarding provides an alternative to kennel for small to medium size dogs who will live in our home as part of the family. We have large secure gardens and paddocks where dogs can relax or run and play. So they don't get bored, our visitors enjoy three walks a day through beautiful local countryside where for their security they will walk on the lead. Also boarding for guinea pigs and rabbits.

Billingshurst Primary School St George’s Day Spring Fair

U

nder beautiful sunny skies, the children and staff of Billingshurst Primary School held their annual Spring Fair on St George’s Day, 24th April. Festooned with red and white bunting, the playground became a marketplace of stalls and games run by the pupils to raise money for the school. Winners of the Design a Poster competition were also announced, following a fourth year of sponsorship by Fowlers Estate Agents, Billingshurst High Street. Pupils were invited to design a poster to promote the Fair reflecting the St George’s Day theme, and more children than ever took part. With competition running high the judges found it hard to reach a decision. However, the three winners were Zoe Lewis from Reception, Marli Wright Thompson from Key Stage 1 and Isabella Holland from Key Stage 2. The overall winner was Marli. The winning designs are proudly displayed in Fowlers Estate Agents’ window and throughout the village. Each year the Spring Fair continues to break records for the amount of money raised and this year was no exception raising over £1,700 for the school. With stalls ranging from the St George’s Café to the

‘Knock the Knight Down’ game, there was some healthy competition between Year Groups to see who could bring in the most amount of money. This year the Hunt the Dragon Egg proved particularly popular. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School, commented, “Thanks to the ingenuity of our pupils and some fantastic weather, we enjoyed a very successful Spring Fair. It is extremely rewarding to watch the children take such pride in coming up with ideas and actively getting involved in this event, ensuring our visitors had a lovely afternoon.” Keith Hutchinson, Manager at Fowlers Estate Agents said, “We are very proud to sponsor the Design a Poster competition for the fourth year in a row and as ever we were extremely impressed with the creativity of the pupils. The St George’s Day theme inspired some fantastic artwork, and created some legendary dragons.” Kate Clifford on behalf of the BPSCA Design a Poster competition winners with Keith Hutchinson of Fowlers Estate Agents. 3D Printers: A World of Possibilities Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services

Y

ou’ll know by now that we love anything techy, and arguably (apart from the explosion in the flying and filming drone market) 3D printers are the next big thing in the tech world. Some techy commentators are saying that they are the start of a new industrial revolution. Indeed, once they are able to print multiple materials in detail, 3D printers will become the equivalent of Star Trek’s replicators, letting you create virtually anything at home. This is a Big Deal. When they first appeared some years ago, 3D printers were the realm of large businesses and big budgets – costing tens of thousands of pounds. Now, if you feel like splashing out, they can be bought for home or small business use, with price tags of between £300 and £3,000 and enable you to custom-create everything from decorations to spare parts to jewellery right at home. Although improvements keep coming, the consumer models available right now are limited. They print slowly, use only a small number of materials in limited colours, and require a lot of tweaking to work well. But once you get your 3D printer up and running, having custom-built objects on tap is a great feature for the modern household.

3D printers are not only great fun but very practical too. With even one of the more basic models available on the market today you can print anything from chess pieces to replicas of your favourite landmark, as well as kitchen utensils, wallets, combs or a new smart phone case. You could even print an acoustic guitar or camera lens or turn your children’s drawings into 3D figurines. It may seem like a bit of a fad that when you get down to it isn’t really very practical, but once you get the hang of 3D printing, and as the technology advances, the possibilities really are endless. If you are intrigued and want to give 3D printing a try then here are some of the most popular printers available for home use: The Ultimaker 2 3D printer isn’t just the Top Ten Reviews Gold Award winner, it is also a great option for individuals of all skill levels, including those just getting started in the 3D printing world. Other options for beginners include the Cubify CubePro, which is the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award winner, and the Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award winner, the Cubify CubeX 3D printer, a large-scale printer perfect for beginners. BBQs: ‘Sizzle Safely’ say Billingshurst Fire-fighters

A

s much as we love the sun coming out to play, it is also important to take great care when enjoying the hot weather. I personally love a good old barbecue with friends and family but these events can turn into a nightmare for the host! Follow a few simple steps to keep you all safe whilst showing off your BBQ skills and sipping on a cold beer! l Make sure your barbecue is in good working order. l Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site, well away from a shed, fence, trees or shrubs. l Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area. l Never leave the barbecue unattended. l Never use petrol to get a reluctant barbecue going. It will certainly do that! l Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies. l Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting

to move it. Thinking about your safety and that of others to prevent anything from happening is better than a lot of people would do. We don’t want to take the fun away from these events but we’ve seen the damage barbies can cause and would hate to have to attend any barbecue related calls due to people being lazy and putting the safety advice to one side. 49P1 – our call sign at Billingshurst – have recently been busy, this is due to the changes in West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. The service have made a number of cuts within the county meaning we have lost fire appliances. This means the fire cover across the county has been reduced. We all like to respond to fire calls as this is why we all joined the service, but our main aim is to keep the community safe. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station

Here comes the Summer – A reminder of how we can all enjoy our public open spaces Jubilee Fields Fishing Lake Swimming in the lake is DANGEROUS and could result in death or serious illness. It also damages lake life. Swimming in the lake is an OFFENCE as it breaks a local by-law and those caught doing so will be dealt with by the Police. Please call the Police on 101 if you see someone swimming in the lake.

Code of Conduct for Dog Owners l

Please always clear up after your pets and either place the waste in the bin provided or take it home with you.

l

If your dog has any aggressive tendencies, please keep it on a lead at all times. Reports of dangerous dogs will be taken very seriously and will be reported to the relevant authorities.

l

If your dog is prone to becoming over-excited and boisterous please place it on a lead when other people or dogs are present. Please remember that some people do not like dogs and are frightened of them.

l

Please throw items for your dogs responsibly and show consideration for other users when doing so.

l

Please keep your dogs out of the fenced off play areas at all times.

Horsham Police urge parents to be responsible With the warmer days and lighter evenings Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team has had an increase in calls relating to groups of youths behaving anti-socially in Horsham town centre and Southwater, particularly between 6pm and 10pm in the evening. Sergeant Chris O’Leary said: “Large groups of youths can be intimidating and there is evidence in recent weeks that groups of youths have been connected to criminal damage, shopliftings and assaults. It is important that parents/guardians know the whereabouts of their children and are aware that large groups roaming the streets can often lead to anti-social behaviour and can have a negative impact on the local community.” Anyone seeing anti-social behaviour or having information about those responsible is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101. If an emergency arises, dial 999.
