St Mary’s to provide a Baby Zone at the Billingshurst Show!

t Mary’s is a lively and family friendly church that meet in the centre of the village. The vision of the church is to be a vibrant community, and an open and welcoming place for everyone. This year we will once again be creating a Baby Zone at the Billingshurst Show. If you’re thinking of bringing a little one to the show, come to Baby Zone – we'll have everything you need to change and feed them in a secure and safe environment including nappy changing facilities, a secluded feeding area, and play space for the youngest visitors to the show. We will have a selection of nappies, wipes and other changing bag essentials such as suncream, all available for free to those who need them.

Can't wait until the show? We have a weekly Baby Zone group that meets each Tuesday from 1.30-3pm in St Mary’s room (East Street). Babies under one year old, with their parents/carers, are welcome to join us to play, make friends and share experiences. At the end of each month we have a themed session such as sensory bottle craft, indoor beach, fun with food messy play, baby disco and baby footprinting. Horsham District’s Literary Life Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, open now until 22nd June

t was not what he wrote, but how he promoted, designed and sold the books that mark out Southwater born Bernard Lintott as a revolutionary giant in the 18th century world of literature. Friend of the century’s leading poet, Alexander Pope, who was also friends of the Caryll family owners of West Grinstead manor, where Pope would write his celebrated Rape of Lock, three generations of Lintots, (who changed their Sussex spelling of their name to a London version) would dominate the world of print. This is just one of the many stories told in the new temporary exhibition: Horsham District’s Literary Life – Collected, Portrayed, Displayed at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery. The exhibition celebrates the rich and varied literary life of the district through manuscripts, books, paintings, even a sampler, as well as stunning examples of Victorian calligraphy. Interspersed amongst the books written by Belloc, Blatchford, Blunt and a host of others, are aspects of the written word from earliest writings to paintings of readers to attractive bindings. Part of the district’s Year of Culture, the exhibition will concentrate on the written word by authors who have lived in, or were born in, the district or where there is a Horsham district connection. Thanks to the funding from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund the museum will be displaying a heavily annotated edition of Sussex, by Hilaire Belloc, as well as a watercolour by the artist Wilfrid Ball who illustrated the work. The book, published in the Edwardian era, delighted readers as it explored the heritage of the county, just as the beautiful first edition of A Sussex Alphabet by Eleanor Farjeon which not only contains verses about places in Horsham district but is also full of charming woodcuts. One of only 220 copies, it was acquired for this exhibition as Eleanor lived for a short while in Amberley which features under the letter Y for the poem You. Today Eleanor is known worldwide for her poem Morning has Broken, sung as a hymn of the same name by generations of school

children and turned into a popular song in the 1970s by Cat Stevens. William Browne was an author in the age of Shakespeare and, at the time, as well known. His fame was resurrected by the English romantic poets who celebrated his unfinished poem Britannia Pastorals (1613/1614). A copy of this book will be on display as William lived, at one time, at Denne House, where his three children were born, having married Timothy Eversfield. Also on display will be Hammond Innes’ own collection of his books bound in rich red morocco leather, a birthday present from his publisher. Innes, born in Clarence Road, Horsham, became a very popular author as was James Herbert who lived at Woodmancote and whose life in the Henfield village is illustrated by a signed copy of one of his many books. The exhibition also features the fascinating subject of the book collector. The district can boast of two bibliophiles, a century apart. Robert Curzon, owner of Parham house, went out book hunting amongst the monasteries of the Levant. The family copy of Visits to Monasteries will be on display among other items thanks to a loan from The Parham Park Trust. The other collector, Major John Abbey, who lived in nearby Storrington, built one of the most important book collections of the 20th century. The passion of the book collector will be humorously displayed by a brilliant paper sculpture The Book Collector by artist Su Blackwell. Horsham District’s Literary Life – Collected, Portrayed, Displayed is a fascinating and unusual look at the written word in the district, it will surprise and delight as it explores the unusual connections and stories of over 400 years of literary culture. Pork and pineapple kebabs A nice take on sweet ‘n’ sour pork, suitable for the barbecue

METHOD

1. Cut the pork into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar in a pan over a low heat until the sugar melts. Add the fish sauce and cool. Tip in the pork and mix well so that all the cubes are covered in sauce. 2. Heat the barbecue, or a griddle pan or grill. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and Spanish onion. You can use whatever onions you have but Spanish are more delicate in flavour and sweeten nicely when grilled. 3. Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 3-4 mins each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling). Serve with rice or slide into pitta pockets.

Petworth Festival – 16th July-3rd August

resh from a record breaking 40th anniversary year, Petworth Festival hits fine form again this summer with a characteristically wide ranging series of events that features classical superstar MILOŠ – ‘the hottest classical guitar player in the world’; rock legend Rick Wakeman, and top comedian Julian Clary. Describing a programme that runs from 16th July-3rd August, Artistic Director Stewart Collins enthuses over the range and quality of the artists who will be performing in Petworth, “…with the track record we have established over many years, it’s hugely gratifying to be able to attract stellar talents across the board.” The festival has long been proud to present artists from classical music’s top drawer but it’s when you add in the fine jazz, worldroots music and comedy talents that you begin to get a full picture of what the Petworth Festival’s really about. This year’s programme includes the massively popular series of concerts in Petworth House’s Stable Yard variously featuring blues legend Georgie Fame, comedian Julian Clary, and jazz combo supreme, Ray Gelato and the Giants (who top the bill at the annual Jazz in the Stables). The programme also includes a series of events featuring jazz and world-roots performers ranging from the leading Northumbrian pipes player, Kathryn Tickell with her band The Darkening, to roots band Kabantu, and the exceptional cellist Matthew Barley. Matthew teams up

with leading sarod player Soumik Datta for a one-off event that blends both western and Asian classical traditions. The Petworth Festival is particularly proud this year to have been given an ‘Awards for All’ grant in recognition of the impact the festival has had in working with young people and families in the area. Along these lines, this year’s programme features its very own Game of Thrones-alike: the medieval fantasy Beowulf, narrated by Harry Potter star Oliver Phelps and which also involves pupils from Petworth Primary School; a free performance of The Wind in the Willows in the Pleasure Ground of Petworth House, and another annual ‘unmissable’: Come-and-sing… the music of Disney with the charismatic choir leader Ben Parry once again at the helm. What are the best headphones for running?

esearch has shown what most of us instinctively knew – that listening to the right type and tempo of music while you run keeps you ‘in the zone’ for longer. So what factors are important when choosing headphones for running? Water resistance. If you run outside this is obviously important, but many of us forget that sweat is water and if you’re running, indoors or out you will sweat, and eventually this will kill your headphones. Fit. There are headphones which wrap tightly around your head, or over and around your ears. But the best types of running headphones are probably true wireless, or lightweight Bluetooth. They are ‘in-ear’ designs with tips that fit into the ear and additional, curved, tapered ‘hooks’ that sit under the crater of cartilage just above the earhole, known as the antihelix. When you’re running, little things like a cable rubbing the back of your neck can feel irritating. Also, although the battery life can be annoyingly short with true wireless headphones if you use them as your main set, it’s more than long enough for even the most enthusiastic runner. Wireless and ‘true wireless’ headphones are different. ‘True wireless’ headphones completely

lack a cable or connector between the earpieces. Wireless headphones are still connected in some way, either over the head or round the back of the neck, even if they no longer need to be connected to a phone jack. Sound quality. Surprisingly this is possibly the least important feature for sports use. Mostly runners want to feel the beat and be motivated by their pumped-up playlist, while blocking out external noise. Sports headphones are not about being able to pick out the subtle nuances in a Chopin piano concerto. They need to be reasonable sound quality and be able to cope with a bit of bass. Ambient Sound. Some headphones are designed to let in ambient sound with good reason: situational awareness is important if you run on your own and you want to be aware of traffic or of someone approaching you. This is less important if you prefer to run in a gym and want to block out the world. Running is such a great activity, and the right music will add to the experience, so pick up some headphones today and in the words of the classic from Spencer Davis Group which features on my own playlist… Keep on Running. farewell message to his mum which was then read at the funeral (with him nodding throughout), and a young daughter who’d enjoyed watching the film Frozen with her dad picked Let it Go when we were choosing the final piece of music for his service. “Many of us want a funeral to be a celebration of life but it’s also really important to give people permission and space for the helpful expression of natural and healthy grief. Whenever practically possible, I encourage the presence of a coffin in the service and the opportunity for mourners to accompany their loved one to a final ‘resting place’. These elements, although they may be difficult, are helpful in marking and acknowledging the reality of death. “Many of the funerals I conduct take place in 35 minutes at our local crematorium, but it’s still possible to personalise these in small but significant touches. At the funeral of a man born in Scotland, we all wore his family’s tartan in thistle and ribbon button holes, and a lady with a passion for crafting had her coffin draped in one of her own quilts instead of flowers. I also have a lasting memory of an autumn day, when, after interring the ashes of a man who loved gardening, we each took a turn with a spade to fill in the earth; pausing before replacing the turf to plant bulbs that would then bloom in the spring. “A funeral service itself is important, but opportunities to share and celebrate can, of course, continue afterwards. he team at St Catherine’s Hospice are familiar with conversations around end of life. They believe it is important that these discussions are had by both patients and their families to ensure that wishes are fulfilled and loved ones are able to contribute in their own way. Here, the hospice’s Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy Lead, Lisa Rainier, tells us more about her role in supporting families to plan a funeral for their loved one, and why she believes it is important to talk openly about death and dying… “Emma Freud (Clement Freud’s daughter) said that the first time she had to organise a funeral she found it ‘baffling, terrifying, weird, overwhelming, devastating and incredibly important’. “Funerals are incredibly important, but organising one doesn’t need to be a negative experience. Whenever I’m asked to conduct one for a person we’ve cared for it’s a real privilege and a valuable way of supporting their family and friends as they navigate those disorienting early days of grief. “Often the person who has died has left instructions; some more detailed than others. My advice to anyone in respect of advance planning of your own funeral is to communicate your wishes regarding major decisions, but to also leave some room for your family and friends to make their own contributions. (There have been times I’ve had to dissuade some people from scripting their own eulogies!) “Meeting with people to plan a funeral is often a really special time. There’s commonly talking, crying, laughing, and some looking at photographs. I hear poignant and funny stories, and gain insight into people’s character strengths and flaws. Of course, there are sometimes tensions and differences of opinion but usually we can find a compromise. “I always try to allow the contributions of all who were close to the person who has died. For example, I helped an adult son with learning disabilities to write a simple

New faces for Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k

he Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k Committee is delighted to welcome two new key members of the organising team. Lauren Swatton is the new Race Secretary taking over from Sue Parillon and Clare Giles takes over as Meetings Secretary from Carolyn Lambkin. Lauren works in clinical drug research and is born and bred in Horsham. She has been running for about 20 years and has lost count of the number of races she has done. She has completed six full marathons, some outside the UK, various 5k, 10k and 10mile races as well as many half-marathons including of course the Barns Green Half Marathon on several occasions. Claire is a self-confessed running addict and is also a Level 3 PT, and a Zumba instructor. She is part of the park run core team at Brighton & Hove and she runs with Burgess Hill Runners and Runbrighton. She has also run many different races over the years and has also completed 6 marathons and several half-marathons, the first of these that she ran was the Barns Green Half Marathon. Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings, said, “We are delighted that Lauren and Claire have agreed to join our team. I know they will bring with them invaluable running knowledge and experience and that they will be able to pick up where Sue and Carolyn left off and help take our event to the next level. I must record a huge thanks to both Sue and Carolyn for all their hard work and dedication over the past few years. “Sue has served as Race Secretary for ten years and in that time she did an outstanding job. Her hard work and dedication were absolutely key in enabling our races to become as successful as they have in the past few years. Sue will continue to work on the race this year and help Lauren settle in to the role. As a

small token of thanks to Sue, we have asked her if she would act as official starter for the 10k race this year. “Similarly, we will miss Carolyn who has for the past four years managed to make sense of and coordinate all the notes from our Committee meetings. She has done a wonderful job and has been an extremely reliable and efficient operator who I have depended on greatly. I know that all the Committee would join me in thanking Sue and Carolyn for all their hard work and total commitment”. This year’s races take place on Sunday 29th September – in just under 4 months’ time. As always, the support and help of all the local residents is greatly appreciated, particularly with regard to road closures. It is always good to see as many local runners taking part, so if you haven’t already signed up for this year’s races, why not give it a go! Once again St Catherine’s Hospice has been chosen as the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k. The enormous success of last year’s races combined with the great generosity of the runners resulted in just over £19,000 being raised for St Catherine’s. A lot of money was also raised for the many societies, groups and sports clubs who help with the organisation of the event. Last year over 2,000 runners registered for the Half Marathon, which is in its 37th year and the increasingly popular 10k event which is now in its 4th year. As always, the two race courses follow routes on closed roads, through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, and Christ’s Hospital. Canal visit: just what the doctor ordered

t’s official – visiting the Wey & Arun Canal can reduce your stress levels. Scientists have discovered that spending between 20 and 30 minutes among nature could cut levels of the stress hormone cortisol by about 10%. An American study led by Dr Mary Carol Hunter released in April found that taking at least 20 minutes out of your day to stroll or sit in a place that makes you feel in contact with nature will significantly lower your stress hormone levels. “We know that spending time in nature reduces stress, but until now it was unclear how much is enough, how often to do it, or even what kind of nature experience will benefit us,” Dr Hunter said. “Our study shows that for the greatest payoff, in terms of efficiently lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol, you should spend 20 to 30 minutes sitting or walking in a place that provides you with a sense of nature.” The Wey & Arun Canal provides miles of tranquil

towpath for visitors to explore, with picnic benches and seating placed to enjoy the West Sussex and Surrey scenery to its full. The Trust also offers a series of free downloadable short walks from its website. Getting close to the nature couldn’t be easier at the recently created Hunt Nature Park in Shalford, either, where a viewing platform provides the perfect opportunity to sit and watch wildlife in its natural habitat. For the ultimate in relaxation, boat trips run from the Trust’s visitor centre in Loxwood every weekend, with special trips operating during the school holidays. A Good Read June’s selection from Grahame Pearson and Willow Coby The House Book – Susan Greenwood Susan Page is a new local author living in Plaistow and writing under the nom de plume of Susan Greenwood. Perhaps best described as historical fiction, The House Book is set in and around Petworth – an area the author knows well. 1663: At 20 years old, Alice Crayford becomes mistress of Oakwood Grange, a house built by her father, and she begins her diary. The house remains in the ownership of one family for three and a half centuries, each generation faithfully recording details of their household in The House Book. Eventually, the family line dies out. 1985: Oakwood Grange has new owners. Janie Whittaker feels an unaccountable attachment to the old place from the very first visit and, inspired by The House Book, decides it’s time she traced the estranged branch of her own family. But it’s Janie’s discovery of Alice’s diary in among some old papers which provides a more interesting link between past and present and soon she’s absorbed in Alice’s world. Meanwhile, Janie can’t help noticing one or two strange little occurrences in the house – even their foundling cat seems a bit odd – but none of this really fazes her. It’s true the witches’ marks over the fireplace are a bit unsettling, but then belief in witches was commonplace in the seventeenth century and now, surely, everyone

knows there’s no such thing as witchcraft? If you are a fan of Kate Morton, Rachel Hore and Katherine Webb you’ll love The House Book. Amazon £6.99 (Kindle £2.99) Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus – Mo Willems What do small children like best in a picture book? If anyone knows, it is Mo Willems, who spent several years as a scriptwriter for Sesame Street. And here, what he has hit on is that little word beloved of toddlers – ‘NO!’ The premise of the book is simple – and summed up neatly in the title. The reader needs to stop the pigeon driving the bus while the bus driver is away for a few minutes. However, this is a very determined pigeon. On every page he comes up with a good reason why he could, should and must drive that bus. Reading this book aloud is a delight. As you read the pigeon’s increasingly desperate attempts to get behind the wheel, your audience can say – or shout – “No!” at each page, usually accompanied by a great deal of giggling. And parents will recognise the toddler’s range of tactics – from pleading, to sulking, to promises to “be your best friend” – all of which are summarily rejected. With simple drawings and a thoroughly endearing main character, this is ideal to read to pre-school children of any age. The pigeon makes several reappearances in Willems’ other books – Don’t Let The Pigeon Stay Up Late is probably the next one you will want to seek out, and it is just as much fun. Really.

Petworth Park Scout & Guide Camp

etworth & Pulborough Scouts and Petworth Division Guides have been holding their annual Scout & Guide Camp in Petworth Park since 1979 and this year was the 40th anniversary. Over the 1st May Bank Holiday weekend Scouts from Billingshurst, Pulborough, Petworth, Easebourne, Fittleworth and Ifold camped together with Guides from Billingshurst, Storrington, Easebourne, Midhurst, Plaistow and Fittleworth. There were over 200 Scouts & Guides plus their leaders and activity volunteers. Activities for the weekend included Abseiling, Climbing, Archery, Firelighting, Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, Grass Sledging, Wide Games, Trails, the Aerial Runway, Downhill Zorbing (rolling down a hill in a giant hamster ball!), Rifle Shooting and Backwoods Cooking. Two new activities for this year were Stand-up Paddleboarding and an evening Silent Disco; both of which proved so popular that they’ll certainly be back. The camp had four people who had actually attended the first camp in 1979; Tim Rapley (Ifold), Tracey Parker (Billingshurst), Kevin Angell (Northchapel, now Billingshurst) and Linda Taylor (Fittleworth, now Storrington). The camp holds a special place in many people’s hearts with many of the current Scouts and Guides having parents who attended the camp themselves. ow what an amazing weekend celebrating 40 years of the camp this year. Back in December there was a competiton to design the back print of the T-shirt for us all to have. We were very proud as one of our girls designed the winning T-shirt. It was amazing with all of the units that had ever attended the camp before, past and present. Two girls made their promise on camp as a Guide, one in a Zorb ball and one by the camp fire in the evening – such special memories. The girls had an amazing time. Pippa said, “Zorbing was really fun and exciting, I also loved the silent disco.” Hannah loved Paddle boarding and Zorbing and the fun time with her friends best. Charlotte loved the abseiling tower and the zorbing. She had a great time making new friends and doing all of the fun activities. Izzy was the last Guide in the unit to be awarded her Baden Powell Award (the highest award you can gain as a Guide); we have a new programme and the girls will now work towards their Guide Gold. Izzy decided to have her BP award presented at the top of the Abseil tower, with her parents. This was emotional and exciting and the views at the top of the tower were amazing of the campsite! Billingshurst and Plaistow Guide Trip to London

illingshurst and Plaistow Guides went on a memorable trip to London during the Easter holidays. We took a morning train to Victoria and then walked to the Houses Parliament, Westminster. The Houses of Parliament are simply stunning. It was a really good tour, very informative and it was lovely to see the areas and rooms that you normally only see on television. MP for Horsham, Jeremy Quinn, caught up with us in the House of Commons which was great and he led the rest of the tour along with our tour guide. He took questions from the girls and kept their attention throughout. Meeting Jeremy made the trip much more relevant to the girls. After lunch, we then took a bus to Hyde Park Corner and walked to the Metropolitan Police horse stables. This was a fascinating tour meeting horses

Jenson and Olive at the stables, the horses work extremely hard at the Horse Guards Parade, football matches and concerts to name a few. It was really interesting learning about the Police horses and what is involved. Before getting on the train to go home we had a visit to the Girlguiding shop – a complete must! orsham Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to be hosting Sue Collins’ new temporary exhibition, Beautiful Sussex. Beautiful Sussex is a solo exhibition by printmaking artist Sue Collins. Sue’s inspiration is taken from her daily walks with Bella, her black lab/collie cross, in and around the South Downs. Using a combination of photography and sketching, as well as drawing on her own personal experiences and memories, Sue creates unique and vibrant linocut artworks in her Sussex studio. Sue’s ‘Downs View’ reduction linocut print was shortlisted for the 2018 Artists and Illustrators of the

Sell-out concert raises £600 for The Forgotten Children of the Land of Lakes & Volcanoes, Nicaragua On 12th April a most enjoyable community event was held at The Chapel, Billingshurst, in aid of The Forgotten Children of the Land of Lakes and Volcanoes. The Chapel was full to capacity with local residents and visitors from further afield enjoying music by Huckabone and Mike Feinstein. Denise Campbell prepared delicious canapés and guests were able to buy both Nicaraguan and locally-made craft items, try their luck in the raffle and see photos and information from my last trip to Nicaragua (reported in April’s Village Tweet). This project supports communities on a remote island in the middle of a lake in Nicaragua – this was the fourth time The Chapel has supported the project. Last year there were two successful craft events and an opportunity to talk to the congregation at their Harvest Festival. This event was yet another in this productive partnership between The Chapel and the project, raising a further £601.55 to help the schools. Future events are a Wildlife Talk on 23rd October and a Christmas sale event on 7th December. Carolyn Gibbs

Equine Partners CIC calls out for votes to bag a share of Tesco’s bag fund

quine Partners CIC, based in Wisborough Green, is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. As reported in December’s Village Tweet, Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Equine Partners CIC is one of the groups on the shortlist. Through their work, families increase communication skills, develop trust, and bond together as a strong team, contributing to the reduction of family break up. Young people learn to manage emotions, communicate and express themselves in a positive manner thus leading to reduction in anti social behaviour and reintegration into daily activities eg school/home life. Equine Partners’ Liz Hibberd says, “We are desperately in need of a mobile shelter to keep Simba, one of our much loved therapy ponies warm and dry, ready to help the children and families that come to visit us.” Voting is open in Billingshurst, Pulborough and

A busy spell for Billingshurst Fire Fighters!

his year has certainly kept the crew very busy. We have attended just under 200 calls so far which is more than previous years. There has been a variety of calls, including RTCs, house fires, kitchen fires and barn fires. We also attend automatic fire alarms, normally at sheltered accommodations due to burnt cooking, but we have to attend to make sure there is no fire situation. These are known as false alarms and all fire stations attend these type of calls. As well as being on call for 50-80 hours per week we have training nights, testing on the equipment to make sure it’s ready for every call and we also attend fêtes for schools and small groups. We have had plenty of groups visiting the

fire station to learn all about what we do. We will also attend local events, so that the children (and adults!) can sit in the fire engine and we can talk about fire safety and prevention to our local community which is a huge part of our job role. As usual we will be at Billingshurst Show on 30th June at the Recreation Ground, Lower Station Road. Well done to everyone on station for doing this ‘parttime’ job so well. It’s a huge commitment, both being on call and taking the time to attend these community events. We look forward to seeing you all on the next one. Horsham Junior Neighbourhood Watch are looking for your help. Please read on…

unior Neighbourhood Watch (JNHW) is a very successful and popular project package, acclaimed by Sussex Police, designed for 1011-year-old children (primary school Years 5-6). The delivered package helps the children to gain an understanding and practical skills to deal with current neighbourhood issues, to make them aware of their personal safety and how to improve it. We build upon the children’s already well developed observation skills, which in our experience have been demonstrated to be far superior to those of adults! JNHW has been created to: 1. Show young people that they can make a difference; 2. Encourage the development of practical skills, to address young peoples’ understanding of community issues and how to make their community a safe place; 3. Help children grow into responsible citizens, ideally with families, grandparents and friends fully supportive of the aims and objectives of Neighbourhood Watch. JNHW is designed to be run as a voluntary after school activity for one hour per week, usually for six weeks but some flexibility is available. Sessions are run by

He is hoping that some of you can volunteer in order that JNHW can continue to do the good work that it has done so effectively for years. Patrick McIntosh sets off on epic cycling challenge His challenge has been supported by Dame Judi Dench

here was a chorus of cheers and a celebratory atmosphere at St Catherine’s Hospice on Friday 3rd May as local man, Patrick McIntosh, from Smallfield, began his ‘wheely’ great cycling challenge. Triple cancer survivor, Patrick, has already trekked to the South Pole. Now he’s taking on his Lifecycle: a mammoth around the world cycling challenge to raise awareness of the fight against cancer – and to raise funds to build a new home for his local hospice, St Catherine’s. And Patrick’s epic challenge hasn’t gone unnoticed. Before his departure his training efforts caught the attention of his neighbour Dame Judi Dench. She met with Patrick to wish him good luck and to give him a lucky four-leafed clover silver medallion charm. Patrick has attached this to his bike for the duration of his challenge. Dame Judi said, “Patrick’s taking on an extraordinary journey. And he’s also cycling for our local hospice, St Catherine’s. I’m sure most people know about the phenomenal work they do looking after people in our community. Please watch Patrick’s progress and give what you can. Because cancer is something that concerns all of us, absolutely all of us, if not ourselves then certainly somebody we know.” Patrick said, “Having Dame Judi’s support has been amazing and I was particularly touched by the charm she gave me. The general support I’ve had has been incredible. I’d like to thank everyone who has already got behind my challenge, by donating and wishing me luck.” Hospice staff and supporters came together to cheer Patrick off for the first stint of his journey of more than 7,000 miles to Japan. After leaving St Catherine’s Patrick cycled towards Pease Pottage, which will be the site of a new, larger hospice building in years to come, then headed onto London and Twickenham Stadium.

From there Patrick will cycle across Europe and Russia with the aim of reaching Tokyo for the opening game of the Rugby World Cup in September. As part of his cycle ride Patrick is raising money for St Catherine’s new hospice building. He said, “It’s an honour to support St Catherine’s as part of my latest adventure. Being a cancer survivor myself I know the importance of their vital care. I want more people to be able to have hospice care in the future so that’s why I’m raising money for St Catherine’s new larger hospice. The new hospice will allow more local people to have the hospice’s expert care when it’s needed most.” Speaking at St Catherine’s on the morning of his departure Patrick added, “Some people say I’m crazy to want to cycle around the world having survived three cancers, but I want to show what’s possible even after a horrible diagnosis and major surgery. I’m really looking forward to getting going now. I’m so grateful to everyone at St Catherine’s who has come out to wave me off and wish me well this morning. Knowing I have so many people behind me will keep me motivated on my journey.” After a well earned rest, Patrick intends to continue the next leg of his global cycle ride across North America and Iceland in early 2020. Lions Club celebrate 45th Charter Anniversary

illingshurst & District Lions Club members and guests recently celebrated its 45th Charter Anniversary with a formal dinner presided over by Lion President Andrew Viall at the West Sussex Golf Club. Club Presidents are elected annually. The next Club President who is to be installed in July is the present Vice-President Joan Bobker who will be the club’s first female President. Last year the club visited all ten primary schools in our district and gave each pupil a free book (around 2,000 books). This year the club are in the process of visiting all 13 pre-schools in the area plus Ingfield Manor and giving all their children a free book. The club attends many local events, collects annually for Marie Curie, supports our primary schools helping with their gardening and outdoor learning and Poster for Peace competitions, Weald School Bursary and ROAR Campaign which challenges the pupils in the schools who participate to think of and explore ideas to change the world. Lions help with transport for Senior citizens (Billingshurst Community Transport), and Christmas hampers for the needy and run monthly bingo session

Financial help is given to various local, medical and international causes such as, Brain Tumour Research, Air Ambulance, Guy’s & St Thomas Critical Care (Sepsis) Unit, Sight Aid, Unicef –Lions Syrian Winter Appeal, and the recent Cyclone Adia. All the fun of the great British Seaside! Wisborough Green Primary School Summer Festival Saturday 15th June, 12-5pm

e are delighted to announce that this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer festival will celebrate our wonderful British seaside and all the fun that it entails. Please come and join us on The Green in Wisborough Green on Saturday 15th June. There will be plenty to entertain the whole family with all sorts of stalls including treasure seeking, face painting and a coconut shy. For the foodies amongst you there will be a refreshment tent packed with home-made treats and a Pimms and Prosecco bar as well as a hearty barbecue. The central arena entertainment will include performances run by our fantastic after school clubs Albion in the Community, Up and Outdoor Fitness and Sama Karate. There should also be some hilarity and audience participation in the form of a Donkey Derby. The event will start at 12pm with a procession by

the children of Wisborough Green Primary School, followed by the traditional Maypole Dance. We will finish at 5pm after the Grand Prize Draw where you will have the chance to win some spectacular prizes FUNDRAISING We hope the entire village and community will enjoy and support this local fundraiser for the school. We are hoping to help fund much need educational resources for our school as well as all-weather surfaces so the children are able to use more of the school grounds during the winter months when it is usually water-logged. Skin deep

eeping your pet’s skin and coat healthy is something most pet owners enjoy doing, the majority of dogs and cats enjoy the owners attention when being groomed and fussed over, and there’s plenty owners can do to keep their pets fur in excellent condition. Diet. In most cases a good healthy skin and coat comes from nutrition within and feeding plays a major role; the skin is the largest organ on your pet’s whole body and requires good nutrition in order to do its job and protect your pet. Most commercial pet foods will contain enough essential nutrients to promote skin health and a glossy coat, but some pets do need an extra boost. Feeding a diet rich in Omega 3 and 6 oils can help with skin and coat condition; salmon oil is particularly beneficial and Evening Primrose and flax oil are both said to have properties to help alleviate dry, itchy skin. If your pet is having skin problems don’t forget diet can play a major role. Sore, itchy skin can be a sign of a food intolerance so check the food carefully for ingredients such as wheat and maize – common triggers for skin issues. If you are unsure check with your vet first. Many owners are finding fish-based and grain-free diets are helping to improve skin and coat quality for sensitive pets. Always try to feed a brand which is open and honest about the ingredients used in the product and isn’t using vague terms such as ‘cereals’ and ‘meat and animal derivatives’ as you will never know what is really in the product. Grooming. Grooming your pet can really help create a bond with the owner. Pets with thick, curly or long coats will need extra attention to keep matts and knots at bay, not only are these unsightly but they can be very uncomfortable for the pet. Some pets may benefit from a regular visit to a professional groomer to keep everything tidy and under control and easy for the owner to manage between visits. Beware of bathing your pet too often as this can strip the natural oils from the coat, leading to dry flaky skin and irritation. Another thing to consider is sunlight. Some pets, especially those with white hair and pink skin, can be

in danger of getting sunburn – cats especially are affected and can get the tips of their ears burnt as they like to lie in the sun. Sun cream is available and should be applied daily to pets likely to be affected. Parasites. The most annoying and common parasite affecting our pets skin has to be fleas! These tiny creatures can multiply very rapidly and bite our pets to feed on their blood, making them very sore and itchy. In severe cases flea allergy dermatitis can cause significant hair loss, crusting and thickening of the skin and secondary infection. If you suspect your pet has a bad case take them to your vet who will prescribe flea treatments and antibiotics to treat any infection. Be vigilant. When grooming look out for live fleas; they like to congregate around the base of the tail and in the groin area. Use of a flea comb is helpful as this will remove flea dirt as well as the fleas themselves. Tiny black specks in the coat are most likely flea dirt, pop some on a damp tissue and if they are flea dirt they will turn a rusty red colour. Fleas have a complicated life cycle and can be hard to eradicate when you get a problem in the home. 95% of a flea problem will be in the home – adult fleas hop on pets to feed and lay their eggs, these eggs then fall off the pet into the environment where they hatching to larvae and continue to develop, eating detritus such as dead skin sells found in carpet fibres and such like, they then form a pupae before hatching into an adult flea. The pupa stage is the biggest problem as they are protected from chemical attack with sprays, etc. The trick is to encourage these pupae to hatch as quickly as possible so they can come into contact with treated surfaces and pets. Prevention is far better than cure and spraying the home on a regular basis especially in the warmer months, and treating your pet is advisable. There is a wealth of treatments on the market with collars, spot on and even herbal preparations available for a more natural, chemical free approach. Helping the stray cats of Greece

ainland Greece and the Greek Islands are inundated with stray and abandoned cats. Since 1992 the Greek Cat Welfare Society UK (GCWS) has been promoting the care and welfare of these stray cats. The aim of GCWS is to humanely control the stray cat population through neutering their colonies. Trap, neuter and return (TNR) is now recognised to be the only humane and effective method of decreasing the stray cat population. Over time it will work, providing it is carried out on a regular basis several times a year. The charity provides volunteer vets and nurses for the neutering campaigns, supports Greek cat rescue groups and sends donations of medical supplies and much needed cat food. As a Veterinary Nurse with a particular passion for cats I had always wanted to volunteer on a TNR project and in 2014 I got my chance. I contacted the GCWS and it wasn’t long before I was given the opportunity to join a neutering campaign in Athens. On that first trip I was accompanied by a fellow UK volunteer vet and with the help of a local Greek vet the number of cats neutered over the five days was 175. The work was hard and relentless but very satisfying and I couldn't wait to return. Following on from this trip I just knew I had to do more to help so I joined the GCWS here in the UK and became a

trustee with the charity as well as helping on three further neutering campaigns. My latest trip was to the beautiful Greek Island of Kastellorizo, a small Island with under 500 residents. The stray cat population though is estimated to be nearer 800! An Island where the cats outnumber the people sounds like a dream destination (to me anyway!) but unfortunately this is an uncontrolled number and with no veterinary practice or even a vet on the Island they were definitely in need of some help. So in early April the chance came to help out on this idyllic Island. I was joined by Adrian, a volunteer vet also from the UK and my husband Alan who is a professional photographer – he was able to document the whole trip and capture photos for the GCWS calendar! Over three days we caught and neutered 51 cats and performed dental treatment on another four. Weald Trip: 12 Days in China

ver the Easter holidays, 16 Year 10 students embarked on a trip of a lifetime to China accompanied by teachers Mr Charles and Ms McKenna. After 14 hours of travelling and a short pitstop in Istanbul, they arrived in Beijing. They were immediately immersed in Chinese culture, enjoyed a hot pot dinner together and then relaxed for the evening in a hotel. The relaxation was short-lived as the following day they were all up bright and early to visit the Summer Palace, have a Chinese calligraphy lesson and then head off to catch the bullet train to Luoyang. On arrival in Luoyang, the students were introduced to their host families and everyone parted ways to allow them to get to know each other and settle into their new situations. The Weald students spent five nights in a Chinese family’s home and for many this was the highlight of the entire trip. They were given the opportunity to take lessons in a Chinese school and had many excursions planned for them during their days spent there. They particularly enjoyed seeing a Kung Fu show at

Coffee Morning Success raises £606 for Macmillan Saturday 27th April saw a Coffee Morning/Bring & Buy Sale at Alfold Village Hall. Hosted by Jean Head and her band of helpers, there was a raffle, refreshments, cakes and savouries, stalls and even a sing-along from Renee. The event was well attended and the amazing total of £606.44 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Care. The Billingshurst Macmillan Group would also like to thank shoppers at Sainsburys, Billingshurst for their wonderful generosity on Saturday 6th April. £455.73 was raised all for local Cancer care. Shaolin Temple while the sun beamed down. The staff at Luoyang High School treated the Weald students to a Chinese banquet dinner in celebration of the exchange and a great evening was had by all. Parting with the host families on the Thursday was quite emotional for some, as many new friendships had been formed with promises to stay in touch. The adventure continued, however, with the Weald staff and students next heading to Xi’an, visiting the Terracotta Warriors and seeing the beautiful city lit up at night time around the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Finally, they all headed back to Beijing to visit some popular sights such as The Great Wall of China, The Temple of Heaven and The Forbidden City. Everyone arrived back at Gatwick airport twelve days later, exhausted but with experiences and memories that will last forever. Sussex Green Living funded by Rampion Offshore Wind to deliver climate change education in schools

After a whole school assembly key stage two children had a fantastic day learning how they can reduce the effects of climate change through the clothes they wear, thanks to a Rampion Offshore Wind grant. Multi-award-winning environmental awareness and education network Sussex Green Living have been funded to deliver their The Future We Want – LESS CO2 programme in 30 schools. Delivered by Carrie Cort, the founder of Sussex Green Living, who trained with former US Vice President Al Gore and leading climate change scientists in climate change communications. She is also a voluntary West Sussex County Council Waste Prevention Adviser and weaves together the subjects in a solutions-based inspiring age-appropriate programme for children and young people. Carrie says, “Climate change and climate emergency are in the news every day. Our children are often more aware than their parents about the damage humans are causing to their planet and their future”. She continues “I passionately believe that our children should grow up with knowledge, tools and solutions to reduce human impact on the only planet which can sustain human life”. Schools can choose between topics such as ‘Love

your clothes and planet’, ‘Energy Forever’, ‘Plastic Free Seas’ and ‘Recycling and the environment’. Whichever topic is chosen children learn how the carbon cycle works, why temperatures are increasing, the environmental impacts of our global economy and the many solutions available to us all. Whytemead School eco co-ordinator Helena Reilly added, “It was a fantastic day. Carrie worked with us to fit the programme into our school day with minimal disruption”. She continued, “The children were totally inspired and talking about initiatives they could set up to help communicate the problems and solutions”. Carrie closed by saying “The IPCC Report released last year paints a sobering picture of the potentially terrible impacts of manmade climate change, we have just eleven years to reduce our carbon emissions if we are to avoid irreversible climate change. If governments, organisations and individuals all take action our children can inherit a healthy future”. Weald awarded funding for Year of Culture film

s this year is the Year of Culture for the Horsham District, we were approached to film two videos to present to the public, which will encompass the spirit of A Year In Billingshurst. The films include events from all over the area, anything from car boot sales to village festivals, it’s all there. We have experience in making several short films (Have a look: www.bencollinsmedia.com – the staff car pool karaoke one is brilliant! Ed.) and this was a challenge we were excited to take on, and a final piece that so far, we will be proud to release to you. With any luck, we’re hopeful you will like it too. In terms of the content of the video, we have tried relentlessly to include as much as we could possibly film, from our base at The Weald School. The video takes in school life as well as exciting public events providing brilliant footage from some of the renowned events in the local area, including LoxFest, Run Wisborough and the 12-hour Lawnmower Race. We have interviews from many people, including local Headteachers, business owners and residents, describing their views on the community in this area, and the many reasons why this outstanding district has earned its cultural title.

Are you sitting sustainably?

ne of the great pleasures in life has to be sitting outside on a summer evening, glass of wine in hand, gazing in reverie at your precious plot. But what are you sitting on? Is your furniture environmentally friendly? What about that lovely decking, or your garden shed? As gardeners we have a responsibility which extends far beyond our boundary. Trees are vital to the planet. They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and act as environmental filters, offsetting the effects of pollution. They also provide a habitat for birds and animals. Like many gardeners I take a keen interest in environmental matters so it came as a shock when I read recently that every year our tiny island imports more unsustainably produced wood than anywhere else in the world! A good proportion of this wood is used to make garden buildings, furniture, fencing and decking. I was thrilled, therefore, to read about the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and their certification programme for sustainable produced and sourced wood. The FSC was founded in 1993, in response to public concern about deforestation. The council devised a wood-labelling scheme which allows a product to be traced right back down the supply chain from the consumer to its source. Any product bearing the FSC logo (including Village Tweet!) is guaranteed to be from forests

which are carefully managed to conserve biodiversity and support local communities. Unfortunately not all garden suppliers stock products which are FSC approved. So we need to demand that they do. The world’s forests are in decline. Some tropical hardwoods are already on the verge of extinction, and temperate forests in the northern hemisphere are also suffering because of unregulated treefelling. As a gardener and lover of our environment I feel more comfortable knowing that I’m not contributing to the destruction of our planet. If you’re replacing your garden furniture this year, ask to see the FSC certified label. Happy gardening. Rachel Leverton

Partridge Green Open Gardens 2019 Saturday & Sunday 15th & 16th June All in aid of various charities

This ever popular village event is in its 8th year and has so far raised over £15000 for various charities. We are so excited about our 24 gardens which are opening this year, 3 of them are new! Each garden will have a charity box so any donations will be gratefully received. It is also a chance to see the beautiful designs, compact plots, allotments, hidden jewels and favourites from last year. Many of them will be serving refreshments and lovely homemade treats. The Scarecrow trail is now a big part of the Village walkabout weekend. The leaflets with all the information will be available on the day from Bluebells Day Nursery situated next to Jolesfield Primary School, Littleworth Lane, RH13 8JE and the Village Hall. Copies will also be in the village shops. The No.16 Southdown bus covers most of the route. Parking is available next to the Village Hall and there are plenty of comfort stops along the way.

The apple blossom of May – Part 2 John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

p until our joining the Common Market growers had a tied market up to Christmas. This meant that no imports of apples was allowed into the country until the New Year. So growers would harvest their apples slowly through the autumn months, grading and selling them as they ripened to a protected market. Then by the end of the Christmas period they would have finished marketing and the girls from the packhouse would go out into the orchards to help with the pruning. From that fateful day in 1973 onwards, though, the fruit from the continent could flood in straight from the start of harvest. The French were sitting on a huge volume of Golden Delicious and this was a Godsend to them. The Golden had been introduced to the French by the Americans – it’s an American bred apple – to aid the French Horticultural industry following the war. With its cropping rate of double that of our traditional Coxes and its ease of pruning and general culture, it was a bolt out of the blue. The traditional Christmas market was crushed, with prices falling just when growers needed a steady level return. So something had to change. The marketing had to be spread over a far greater time to even out the flow of fruit and try to halt the December glut. Large controlled atmosphere stores had to be built to keep the fruit in good condition for a further three or four months. Picking regimes had to alter so that the fruit was picked far earlier and much more quickly than before. Ripe fruit will not store! All this cost a huge amount of money. Storing fruit was expensive. Pickers used to put all the fruit they picked into the box. Small apples or those not of best quality would go off to the market traders and perhaps bring in just a few pence, but at least it would be sold. Now they lost money if they were put into expensive storage and grading. So they went on the orchard floor. Those huge old trees of those days produced a lot of fruit that fell into that category. They had to go. There followed those scenes that you probably remember on the television of huge fires burning on farms as those old orchards fell to the march of progress. Many a tear was shed as village folk watched those grand old trees fall to the bulldozer and burn on those pyres. Replanting with more intensive systems was carried out on the farms, and production in the orchards around

us continued to rise as new techniques as well as new varieties were introduced to the farms. But the seeds of pending gloom were already sown. We found ourselves fighting a battle on several fronts. We needed to constantly produce high quality crops with little wastage. Our clay soil was not exactly conducive to this. It took us at least two years longer to get our trees cropping at full rate and we all know the problem we can get with the wet weather mud and the dry summer cracking of our soil. These were problems our large rooted trees of long ago could just shake off, not so the dwarfing stocks of the modern tree. Many of our orchards were planted in the folds of the Arun valley. Low fields yield to spring frosts. Once again the old tall trees of long ago, especially with the aid of multitudes of smudge pots lit through their orchards, could take this. Not so the low intensive trees. A few farms invested in frost protection but for many it was a cost too high. So gradually the orchards of our county started to disappear. Many others, as they reached the stage of needing replanting, were grubbed and not replaced. Sadly in 2000 Kirdford Growers closed its stores for the last time. With too few farms left to supply its huge capacity it had to cease trading and the familiar buildings disappeared from the village that they had so dominated for over 80 Years. Now the only building left of the old packhouse is the office that has been transformed into a superb village shop. Our own orchards were the last to go in the area. 15,000 trees burning and taking so many memories with them. I helped plant most of them; for the last few years every winter I pruned every one. Now they were just smoke in the sky and ash on the ground. That’s how a village can alter. How a way of life can be born from such a simple beginning and just as easily fade away till only the older ones can reflect on how things once were. I can still see and hear it though. Orchards gleaming with blossom in the warmth of early May. Trees groaning under autumn’s harvest. Trailers loaded with ripened fruit. Most of all though… the sound of laughter and chatter echoing through the trees as the harvest was gathered. Such are memories made. Keith Brown, B.E.M.

n Tuesday 14th May, one of our lif- long Billingshurst residents, Keith Brown, was awarded the Queens British Empire Medal for services to his community. I was lucky enough to have been invited to this special occasion, and I consider myself privileged to know him. I first met Keith in 2008 when he raised his concerns about a growing youth problem at the time. I was already running a weekly youth club called TAG and Keith offered to get involved. He joined the Billingshurst Community Partnership and quickly became the positive male role model for many young people. When the cricket and football clubs moved to Jubilee Fields, we secured funding to build the youth shelter and multigames court on what is now known as Station Road Gardens. From there, with the help of the Billingshurst Community Partnership, Keith set about establishing Station Road Gardens as a company limited by guarantee. The rest is history… Any of you that have, and do, enjoy the beautiful gardens that Keith and his volunteers have created, need to know that it’s because of the dedication, drive and commitment of one man: Keith Brown! Sure, he has some help, (not enough, though), but it is he who has

orchestrated the whole garden. The land is Billingshurst Parish Council owned, which means it belongs to each and every Billingshurst resident and we should all be interested and involved in how our open spaces are used. We should all take pride in what Keith has achieved and support him going forward with his ideas. His honour is well deserved. Well Done Keith! Our Community Volunteers – Christine Sanderson

hristine Sanderson has an excellent reason to volunteer for the Mary How Trust for Cancer Prevention – without them, she wouldn’t still be here. Eleven years ago she was feeling very tired and unwell, but visits to her doctor had not identified the underlying cause. As her health deteriorated she decided to have a Mary How health screening which set her on the path to a speedy diagnosis of leukaemia. When she was admitted to hospital she was told that they were surprised that she was still able to walk based on the blood tests they took. Following hospital treatment which included a stem cell transplant she has now made a complete recovery, but understandably credits Mary How with saving her life. Christine, whose career has included banking and various administrative and financial roles in schools, started doing voluntary work for Macmillan at St Richard’s in Chichester where she arranged ‘Look Good Feel Better’ workshops for women who had undergone treatment for cancer. Although she is still involved with this she has shifted her focus for the past eighteen months to working in the Mary How charity shop in

Billingshurst, which is closer to her home and family. Apart from the obvious connection with her health, she is also delighted to support a small charity which is able to allocate a high proportion of the money it raises to its aims, principally funding the shortfall between the cost of the screening tests and the amount that people are able to afford to pay as a donation towards them. A self-confessed ‘doer’ and a people-person, she also enjoys the contact with the public and the chance to get stuck in with all aspects of the shop. The Mary How Trust was set up following the early death from cancer of its namesake, and is a local charity based in Pulborough. It aims to make health screening available to all to provide an early warning of serious illness.
