Loxwood Meadow also plays host to The Country Brocante’s Summer Fair (page 14). Station Road Gardens once again welcomes live theatre (pages 12 & 13) and also Picnic in the Park (page 46), replacing Lark in the Park. Run Barns Green is ‘on’ again after a year’s gap (page 24), as is the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s ‘Poddle’ walk (page 39). And the Wisborough Green Primary School’s Summer Fair returns (page 54). So, while caution is still the watchword (at the time of writing – mid-May – we still don’t know the extent of the new ‘Indian’ strain) we can at last begin to enjoy ourselves a little. St Mary’s: Making space for You

t Mary’s Church is about to embark on something dynamic. As the Rev. David Beal says: “We want to open the doors of St. Mary’s Church building to share the space with the whole community”. This beautiful church building set high on the hill in all its glory is to become a hub for village activities, to include concerts, exhibitions, festivals, a space for clubs to meet and many other activities to take place, including a café and more. Set in the heart of Billingshurst village, the interior of this building is to become a beautiful open space, fully equipped with the best sound and lighting systems, completely access friendly, to also include toilet facilities and a kitchenette, all of which will be available for hire and the enjoyment of all. We are about to embark on this exciting journey and soon start work on this project, which will be referred to as St Mary’s Transformation Project. With our approved plans in place, we are currently gathering a team who will focus on the funding needed, as the cost will be significant. We

will keep you informed of our progress as we move forward on this journey. If on reading this article you feel you would like to be a part of this project and help in any way you would be most welcome to join us. As you can imagine, a project of this size and breadth will need to tap into many talents such as art, design, printing, publicity, to name just a few. Even your valuable time would be most welcome. Royal British Legion – a Century of Service

n Sunday 15th May 1921, a wet and dreary day, a small number of ex-servicemen walked to the Cenotaph war memorial in London’s Whitehall. As Big Ben struck nine, four men representing societies that for three years had been rivals, laid a wreath at the base of the memorial. On that wreath were the badges that would officially amalgamate to form the British Legion. The Legion has made change happen, fundraised during the Poppy Appeal, provided welfare locally and became the foundations for what is now the UK’s largest Armed Forces charity. One hundred years later, to mark the moment of our founding, our National President laid a wreath at the Cenotaph at 0900 hours on Saturday 15th May 2021. To coincide with the activity at the Cenotaph, representatives from the Billingshurst branch held a service at our local war memorial. This was conducted by branch chairman Rob Nicholl and branch president Colin Banks. A very simple ceremony, conducted under COVID protocols, saw a single wreath laid by the Billingshurst

Branch. The Exaltations were read by the branch president, followed by the sounding of the Last Post and a two-minutes silence. After Reveille, prayers were given by the branch chaplain, the Reverend David Beal of St Mary’s Church. This year, the Royal British Legion is celebrating 100 years of support for the Armed Forces community. From the beginning we have campaigned for fair treatment of those who have given so much for their country during the wars and conflicts, providing much needed welfare support and comradeship to millions. A century on and we continue to respond to the changing needs of the Armed Forces community, providing small interventions to life changing and sometimes lifesaving support. Dare we…?

fter more than a year of living under restrictions that none of us could have foreseen a couple of years ago, June hopefully marks the point at which many of those restrictions will be removed. To be able to meet with family and friends without any constraints is something that many of us have longed for. The battle with the pandemic isn’t over, but nonetheless we are moving into a time in which we might dare to have hope for the future. But, as we perhaps dare to hope again, we also need to be aware that many of us will carry scars from the past year. It might be the deep sorrow at not being able to say a proper goodbye to those who have died. It might be a deep weariness from struggling through long months of loneliness. It might be the exhaustion of keeping going in very trying circumstances. For all of us, and for all sorts of reasons, the past year has been a tough one. and we might well wonder: how do we keep going when life is hard? And how do we find hope to face the future? Paul, one of the writers in the Bible, knew a thing

or two about living through tough times. In the course of his work, he faced all sorts of hardships, oppression and unjust imprisonment. Here is part of his advice to friends of his who were facing their own struggles: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” (Philippians 4.8). Or, as the poem ‘Desiderata’ has it: “With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.” May you all find hope and comfort in the coming days. At the time of writing (early May) we’re hoping that with the relaxing of lockdown we will be able to offer much more in the way of worship at St. Mary’s. Loxwood Drive-in Movies are Back!

nce again Hollywood is rolling out the red carpet and coming to Loxwood, as the Loxwood Drive-in Movies return for a movie extravaganza on the 19th July through to the 1st August. Proving that nights out, fun with the family and decadent meals out still exist, the Loxwood Drive-in Movies will be opening its gates for both matinee and evening performances, showing family favorites, sci-fi classics, musical blasts, romantic tear jerkers and a plethora of fun feel good films, for young and old alike. Following its huge success last year, the big screen will be lighting up the Loxwood Meadow, with the excitement of the classic drive-in movie experience being reignited once again this summer. And, if you are more than ready for a socially distanced, safe night out, this spectacular American-style drive-in movie extravaganza is going to turn your dream into a reality. Showing favourites such as A Knight’s Tale, Bohemian Rhapsody, Back to the Future, The Rocky Horror Show, Mamma Mia and How to Train your Dragon; and with sound being channelled through each individual in-car stereo system, the thrill just gets better and better with a selection of food and beverages available for delivery to your car. Cars will be parked at least two metres apart in numbered bays and, having chosen from a selection of meat or vegetarian burgers, hot dogs, chips, popcorn,

sweets, soft drinks or alcoholic beverages, the food delivery service will enable you to text your order from your vehicle, and a ‘Chevrolette’ will deliver it straight to your car. The huge state-of-the-art LED movie screen will make the family matinee performances running at 5pm, and the evening showings at 9pm an experience never to be forgotten. Gates will open at 3:30pm for the matinee and 7:30pm for the evening film, to allow ample time to park and settle-in, in readiness. And, with safety and visitor comfort always a key priority; the allimportant toilet facilities will be set a minimum of two metres apart and comply with all social distancing and hygiene regulations, with hand sanitisers both inside and out and a distanced queuing system in place. Tickets must be booked in advance. Tickets for matinee performances are £20 which includes your vehicle plus three people; with tickets for evening performances at £30 to include your vehicle and two people. Additional persons in a vehicle are at £5 for the first additional person and £2.50 for each individual after. METHOD

Meringues 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C / gas 7. Line a baking tray and pour the sugar on to it then bake in the oven until it just begins to melt at the edges. Rub the inside of the mixing bowl with the lemon (removes grease) and add the egg whites. Just before its time to take the sugar out of the oven, start whisking the whites at high speed. 2. Carefully tip the hot sugar and the salt into the fluffy foamy whites. Continue whisking until cool, glossy and forms soft peaks. Lower heat to 130°C / gas ½. Heap dollops of meringue on to lined baking trays, making sure they are well spaced. Bake in the cool oven for about two and a half hours. Check after two hours. The outsides should be crisp and golden but not burned! Turn off the oven and leave the meringues inside to cool completely. The mess 1. Wash the strawberries and slice into bite-size pieces. Place in a bowl, sprinkle with the caster sugar. Place in the fridge for half an hour until the fruit goes squidgy. 2. Set a third of the strawberry mixture on one side for later. Using a potato masher lightly crush the rest into a chunky puree. Pour the double cream into a cold big bowl. Sift in the icing sugar and the teaspoon of vanilla paste (not essence) and whip to soft peaks. 3. Roughly break six of the meringues. Fold the pieces and the crushed strawberries into the whipped cream. Don’t over mix; the red and white should be clearly distinct.

Preparation time: 30 minutes. Cooking time: If making meringues allow 2 hr 30 mins plus cooling. Otherwise, none! Serves 6

Hair Today… How to deal with thinning hair

ale pattern baldness refers to a loss of hair on the scalp in men. It happens as hormone levels change over a man’s lifetime, especially in the later years and affects around 50% of men by age 50. Although it’s a natural part of the aging process for millions of men, hair loss can be psychologically distressing to those experiencing it. Many men spend vast amounts of money on various hair loss remedies in an effort to reverse the balding process. Hair transplant surgery is expensive and good results are not guaranteed. It’s actually easier to look after your remaining hairs than it is to grow new ones. Modern toupées look natural and although the best come with a large price tag, they are still considerably cheaper than surgery. Between surgery and toupées there are other options. Baldness has bothered men for millennia and some ancient cures were frankly bizarre. They included rubbing onions on the head or applying potions with ingredients that included goat, goose or even hippo dung! Thankfully, hair restoration products have dramatically improved since drug companies became involved. One product in particular – Minoxidil – has proved incredibly successful. It was originally developed to treat high blood pressure. However, an interesting side effect of Minoxidil is that it made hair grow. Now it is used

as a topical treatment for male pattern hair loss. The preparation is called Rogain®. Unfortunately, if you stop using Rogain® the effect quickly reverses, so once the treatment starts it has to continue, and it isn’t available on the NHS so the cost can escalate quickly. The simplest, cheapest, and most effective solution is actually to accept the situation. Hairdressers and barbers are the experts. They will help you to choose a new, flattering hairstyle. As a general rule, it’s best to keep the remaining hair as short as possible. Don’t be afraid to shave it all off; Mark Strong, Patrick Stewart, and Dwayne Johnson are all extremely attractive and charismatic bald men. If that’s too dramatic a step, then a good cut is a ‘short Caesar’, which is a close cut that manages to give the impression of hair. Another option is to allow the facial hair to grow to draw attention away from the baldness. A neat moustache and goatee can look very debonair. Just don’t go for a ‘comb-over’. A man who radiates confidence will always be attractive regardless of the amount of hair on his head. If you don’t make a big deal out of your thinning hair, nobody else will, either. And if in doubt, remember this anonymous quote; “God made some heads perfect – the rest he covered with hair”. Kate McCarthy

here’s nothing like the water to keep kids fit and healthy, energised and having fun. Our lessons at Billingshurst Leisure Centre follow the Swim England Learn to Swim Pathway, with a range of swimming classes to turn them into strong, confident swimmers. Swimming is a skill kids will love for life and it’s important for parents’ peace of mind too. Our world-recognised programme teaches swimming using a mix of fun activities and they’ll soon become safe, competent and confident swimmers in front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Babies and pre-schoolers will learn basic motor skills and have lots fun learning through fun games that teach them jumping in, splashing around, kicking their legs while being supported by their carer. 3- and 4-year-olds then enjoy the water with newfound independence and focus on coordination and propulsion. Balls, woggles and floats are used to improve alignment and style whilst confident jumping in makes an enormous splash! 5-9-year-olds are at the right stage of development to build on their growing strength and movement skills. At this stage, the focus is on specific water skills like safe entry and exit from the pool, rotation and orientation, and the

importance of streamlining, buoyancy and balance. Having gained confidence in and under the water, children go on to learn aquatic breathing, how to travel effectively through the water and accomplish the various stroke techniques. The children then can further develop their skills and take part in the competitive swim programme that includes triathlon lessons and rookie lifeguard lessons. All the participants of our Learn to Swim Programme get unlimited access to public swimming sessions to practise the skills they are learning and have fun in the water. Our teachers conduct continual assessments and you can access these assessments via the Course Portal to see how your child is doing. We also offer 1:1 swimming lessons and run crash courses during the school holidays which include fun courses such as snorkelling, water polo, mermaid and rookie lifeguard sessions. Where do all your donated spectacles go?

illingshurst & District Lions Club have been collecting donated spectacles at their Jengers Mead Bookshop for many years, but what happens next? They all go to Chichester Lions Club, to be examined by a team of Lions and other volunteers in their recycling workshop at the Apuldram Centre, a charity for adults with learning disabilities in Chichester. Chichester Lions first collected and sorted used spectacles in 1967, becoming a major Club activity in 1980, working with the Missionary Optical Society (MOC) in Devon, for their clinics in Kenya and India. In 1985, Chichester Lions linked up with Le Havre Lions and Medico France who have the necessary equipment to clean and grade spectacles for reuse and distribution. Today, Chichester Lions process tens of thousands of used spectacles from Lions Clubs throughout the UK, together with many others from opticians and supermarkets, all delivered to them free of charge by Parcel Force. Apart from MOC and Medico France, sorted spectacles are also sent directly to contacts running eye clinics in Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Nigeria and Nepal, and to volunteers from Unite for Sight to take on missions to countries across the world. Scrap metal salvaged from broken and unsuitable spectacles raises funds which support the sorting operation and provide finance for eye related projects in

the UK. As spectacle recycling is a national effort, UK Lions Clubs can nominate projects in their local area. Hence your donated spectacles can benefit a great many people at home and overseas.

Speaking on the phone though is a skill, and like any skill we improve the more we do it. The more practise you have, the less anxious and more confident you’ll feel. Start by making a list of the people or organisations you need to call and articulate what it is about the call that provokes anxiety. Are you worried you’ll be judged, or you’ll stumble over your words and sound stupid? When you hang up, articulate what went well so you acknowledge your successes. If telephobia is interfering with your life or threatening your job then consider seeking cognitive behavioural therapy. This is a highly effective treatment for social anxiety. Humans are social creatures so speaking on the phone is daunting because we’re denied all social cues: gestures, body language, and eye contact. We rely solely on the voice and this can make us hyperaware of our own voice and choice of words. Anxious people often rate texting as a superior form of communication. It allows time to think about responses, which takes the pressure off interactions. It also means we are not the sole

He imagines he can grab some food at the last minute. Then the last minute arrives and he spies a fat pinecone, full of lovely nuts. It is just what he needs, and he sets off to acquire it. But he isn’t the only one eyeing it up. Plan-Ahead Bruce has also seen it. His store is getting on nicely and this is the perfect pinecone to finish it off. Who will get to it first? With wonderful illustrations and text to match, this book teaches the value of teamwork to young readers.

Run Barns Green to go ahead in September

un Barns Green will go ahead as planned this September. It will be the 39th anniversary of the event and the two races, the Half Marathon and 10K races, will take place on Sunday 26th September subject to the Government guidelines with regard to the pandemic. Last year’s race was cancelled and the organisers were very keen to do everything possible to get this year’s races to take place. At present mass participation at outdoor events can take place, but most organisers are waiting until after the significant 21st June date when most COVID restrictions will be eased. This is a full three months before the Run Barns Green date and the organisers are very hopeful that by September the overall situation will be significantly better and safer for everyone involved. Of course, the situation will be monitored very closely and the race committee will ensure that the safety and wellbeing of officials, helpers, competitors and spectators is the top priority. Commenting on the news, acting Run Barns Green Chairman, Nigel Currie, said, “We are delighted that we are able to make this positive announcement about our event. There is a lot of work to do by the committee members who are all volunteers, and so a decision has to be made now to give us time to order all the necessary equipment and supplies. We also need to attract lots of runners and we look forward to welcoming back all our regular competitors to Barns Green. As announced in last November’s Village Tweet, we have a new sponsor this year, Architectural Plants, which is a specialist horticultural nursery in

Pulborough, West Sussex, who specialise in Garden Design and Planting and we are looking forward to their involvement in this great local event”. Run Barns Green is organised entirely by volunteers and relies completely on the loyalty and commitment of the committee who work tirelessly to maintain and improve the standards of the races each year. On race week-end a small army of additional volunteers get involved. These include sports clubs – tennis, cricket, rugby football, stoolball and hockey, the local scouts, cubs, brownies, youth club, church and playgroup. These groups and many others each take on an area of responsibility – running water stations, helping with catering, marshalling, car parking, security and de-tagging and looking after all the runners as they finish the races. The Barns Green Players provide the commentators for the event to keep everyone informed about what is going on. Each organisation receives a donation of a few hundred pounds which helps them to pay bills, buy new equipment and generally improve their offering. Last year, despite the race cancellation which meant there was no income for the race, Run Barns Green still donated over £1500 to 20 different organisations, groups and sports clubs that help the organisers stage the event each year. Hospice vows to support community despite pandemic challenges

t Catherine’s Hospice has continued to provide its expert endof-life care and support to local people throughout the pandemic. Here, Giles Tomsett, St Catherine’s Chief Executive, shares an update. “Caring for our community – your family, friends and neighbours, isn’t just a job for us, it’s ingrained. “I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported us throughout the pandemic. Your amazing support has kept us going through some of the toughest days in our nearly 40year history, but sadly, the impact of COVID-19 continues across our charity. “You’ll likely already be aware that our fundraising income has been significantly affected by this pandemic, and that last year we had to make some tough changes to reduce costs. “Even with those changes and savings, we are now only operating twelve beds at our hospice in Malthouse Road. This allows us to offer people the safest possible care, and to continue our robust infection control measures as our twelve beds are in single rooms. It also helps us to save money at a time when our income has been severely affected. Once our operating finances are more buoyant, we can scale back up as we move into our new hospice home at Pease Pottage. “Although we’re currently offering less hospice beds, we’re still offering our expert care and support to everyone who needs us. Most people we care for want to die at home, in the comfort and familiarity of their own surroundings. To help

people achieve this wish, we will be refocusing our community facing teams to provide as much hospice support at home as we can, and to align ourselves to better support the work that our local healthcare systems and local care homes are doing to care for people with frailty. “The people we help are everything to us, and their needs are at the heart of every decision we make. Traffic Calming across the parish The Council receives many requests for traffic calming across the Parish. Although ultimate responsibility for such matters resides with WSCC as highways authority, the Parish Council does have some power to promote such schemes and it is currently focusing its energies on developing proposals to make East St and High St more pedestrianand cycle-friendly, following the opening of the new spine road which should remove through traffic. Parish Councillors consider there may be scope to set up a Traffic Calming Working Party, made up of local residents and Councillors, which could consider such future requests, determine which are possible, and take forward new schemes. The Council is keen to gauge the level of interest before setting up such a group, so if you would like to offer your services and get involved, please email clerk@billingshurst.gov.uk. Billingshurst Community Speedwatch One of the most frequent complaints heard by the Council over the years relates to speeding vehicles in the parish. If this is something that concerns you, and you would like to be able to try and do something about it, why not consider joining our Community Speedwatch Scheme? Prior to lockdown in March 2020, the Billingshurst Community Speedwatch Group had been operating in and around the parish of Billingshurst and as restrictions start to lift, we are looking for more volunteers so that we can start sessions again. The more volunteers we have, the more frequent the Speedwatch sessions can be held and the more areas can be covered. Neighbourhood Plan Result Following the referendum on 6th May, the votes have now been counted for the Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish of Billingshurst. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote. The vote was 87.83% YES and 12.17% NO.

Council meetings Following a decision in the High Court at the end of April, all Council/Committee meetings will go back to being held on a face-to-face basis from 6th May. The Council is looking into ways in which it can still livestream meetings on Facebook and (when technology permits) YouTube. Oaklands Beavers make an Impact 1st Billingshurst Beavers gain Community Impact Level 1 Badge

ver the past term Oaklands Beaver Colony has been working towards the Community Impact level 1 badge. In their Badge book it tells us that ‘making a difference is an important part of being a Beaver’ and this badge gives them the chance to help other people and make the world a better place. Using the A Million Hands resources we learned about mental health. It was not the easiest subject to take on, but very relevant at a time when people of all ages (the Beavers are aged 6-8) have been missing contact with others and coping with a very different way of life. We started with discussions about what our ‘mental health’ was. In Nathan’s words, “It is when we look after our thoughts and try not to let our feelings get too big to cope with.” Everyone made a ‘glitter jar’, the effect was to “make you feel calm when you are stressed” (Jeremy). Everyone also had to find three items to touch or smell that stimulated mindfulness. Darcy liked finding smells and textures that made her feel happy – this was achieved with her soft and fluffy bear, while lavender oil helped her sleep. The five ways to wellbeing were used to explore our mental health and as the basis for the next activities… Connect. Chatterboxes were made to help promote discussions about mental health. Be active. The Beavers were encouraged to go out for a walk as a family, using the chatterbox while walking and to be sponsored if possible. Take notice. Take time to slow down and focus on appreciating the time taken doing an activity. The Beavers were asked to spend an hour just ‘chilling out’ doing something they enjoyed – Hama beads, Lego, and drawing, are examples of what they did. Learn. We can always learn new skills to help us in life and everyone has a skill to share. We spent one

meeting learning how to make a paper boat, check the tread on a tyre using a 20p, how to tie shoe laces and how to make a game from a shoebox and cardboard tubes. Give. We raised £170 sponsor money that was donated to West Sussex Mind. The charity Mind partners the A Million Hands programme so we invited Louisa from West Sussex Mind to join one of our Zoom meetings so we could tell her what we have learned and how it had helped us. She helped us with creating our own ‘Superpower’ character which was a popular part of the badge. We had to think what helped us when we had ‘big feelings’ to overcome. Could we use some help from a ‘superpower’? How could our ‘superpower’ help others? These have been sent away to be combined to make our very own Oaklands Superpower. Meet Captain Positive! (Left.) Finally, we need to TELL THE WORLD which is why we hope you are reading this. Having discussed this with the Beavers they feel it is important that as a child they are aware of how to look after their mental health. We all need help to keep positive in times with lots of negative things around. Other comments made by the Beavers: “It has made me aware how others feel – my brother, family, teachers”; “It has made me more aware of my feelings.” The Beavers worked very hard to gain this badge and it was not easy doing most of it via Zoom meetings and at home. It was also very challenging for Starfish, one of our Section Assistants, who planned/co-ordinated all the meetings. Very well done to the 7 who attended all the sessions and achieved the Badge. Public Art coming to Amblehurst Green

ince the start of the project in 2018 (see Village Tweet April, June and August 2018 – you can read them online via VT’s website) , the public art has like many things been overtaken by events, not least by COVID-19. In the early stages of the project the artist Helena Roden concluded workshops with local schools and pop-up art workshops as part of the Billingshurst Show and Billifest. The resulting designs were approved by stakeholders and the planners. Since that point, the development has slowly taken shape under COVID working practices. During the process there were large soil heaps stored onsite which made it difficult to visualise where the sculptures would be best placed. As the development has taken shape this has been resolved, and the foundations for the sculptures were finally installed in February this year. They will be placed to give an element of surprise and interest when viewed through the hedgerows or across the vale. The pieces reflect the previous uses of the land; this included hay and grazing, and the contrast between the neatly mown lawns and the wild meadow grasses. Three forms: a hay bale, a traditional stook, and small houses. Each piece has a neat and tidy side with the grass forms breaking out through the shape to give the contrast between ‘wild’ and controlled elements. Due to all the uncertainty, Helena and her colleague Gideon Peterson have been working on other projects, but are now focussing on the works for the Amblehurst Green development. Public art in new developments is included to create places with character that belong to a

specific location. Often these elements are the most unique part of the site, the most handmade and reflect the character of the place. Helena is an experienced public artist who believes that community engagement is an essential ingredient in the process; she has extensive experience in running creative workshops and consulting with groups of people. She also works as an art outreach tutor for an adult education centre in London in collaboration with the British Museum. The ideas for the works being created relate closely to the conversations and workshop contributions held earlier in the project. The indigenous grasses are one of the most noticeable elements in the public open space within the development, and they are one of our most overlooked but essential plants as they are closely related to wheat. Painted metalwork is the material Helena most often uses for exterior situations as it is durable and low maintenance, but the main reason is that a painted finish brings colour and atmosphere into the sculpture and its environment. Gideon is a highly talented and experienced blacksmith; working on the pieces requires both physical strength and an artist’s eye. Despite Helena living in London and Gideon living in Wales the two of them have successfully collaborated over the past 15 years on a variety of projects ranging from giant flowers to school gates. New Renegades are in-tents!

he new members of the Renegades youth club are about to get their first taste of green site camping – less five-star hotel and more five-billion-star accommodation as they get to see the night sky unpolluted by electric light. After 14 long and weary months of lockdown – an eighth of the lives of some of the younger members – the bell tents and event tents are being aired and the campfire stories rehearsed as the first camp of 2021 is about to get underway during the May half-term holidays. “The kids can’t wait. They haven’t been able to leave home or go anywhere for so long and they love the idea of a new environment, unfamiliar sights and sounds and the chance to socialise with new friends,” says Group Leader Gareth Miller. “We have lots of new members who have never camped before so it will be a great opportunity to build a team spirit in addition to learning basic survival skills. We will also be taking the telescopes so the children will really be able to see stars – and planets – while we are in the middle of nowhere.” The Renegades have also found they have feet of

clay… real clay. For one of the Monday night mixed activity sessions Gareth and fellow Group Leader Damian Dixon took them down to the stream to make clay pots. “The children voted that that was what they wanted to do so we went on a bit of a hike to a spot on the river where we knew we could easily access the clay and where the children could easily make their own pots,” says Gareth. “It was a hoot. A few of them got into the river with me – some more than others – but they all loved the idea of living like their ancient ancestors and making household equipment.” In addition to the regular weekly activities, such as archery, drama, cookery and carpentry, the Renegades are also in the process of planning a full year of professionally organised activities, with sailing, climbing and axe throwing top of the children’s very full ‘to do’ lists. Firefighters: it’s all in a day’s work!

e are pleased to announce that in September we will be able to host our first Charity Car Wash in over 18 months. Providing the Government’s guidance stays as it is, we will be able to go ahead. The date is yet to be confirmed. This will hopefully be the start of many events we plan to run in forthcoming months and into next year. We will hopefully be able to welcome schools and groups to the fire station to learn all about fire safety, plus an Open Day in 2022. Thank you to those who have been in touch following last month’s smoke alarm advice. It’s great to hear that people are following our ‘Test It Tuesday’ tip, and to those who have been in touch in need of smoke alarms. It’s been a busy few months on station, averaging over 40 calls per month. We have

attended a variety of incidents, such as field fires, chimney fires, house fires, road traffic collisions, fire alarms and helping with providing extra cover during incidents on standby at other stations. One call the guys would love me to share… a few weeks ago we were called to assist with helping a small child with a toilet seat stuck on his head! Luckily, Mum saw the funny side of it and took lots of photos ready for his 18th! It shows how varied life as a firefighter can be! We have a new recruit in the process; he is hoping to complete his training course in September. Hopefully we can introduce him to Village Tweet readers soon. John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by. I’m sure that most of you good folk have in your houses, garages and garden sheds, a collection of articles that can be labelled as, quite bluntly, junk! Now, think of the access to untold years of such stuff that the average farm has. Something breaks; a machine is updated or replaced; there’s an excess of bolts for some job that was done 20 years ago… what does the normal farmer do? He puts it into stock! Your shed at home may be able to handle a bit of discarded detritus in one corner, but imagine what a 200year-old barn, or two or three dark and cavernous tractor sheds can hold. Such places are a treasure trove of these things that generations have hung on nails or placed on spider-webbed shelves with the intention of one day repairing or finding a further use for. Of course it never happens. Instead they gradually merge into the fabric of the building. We see them daily as we work, but they are ignored. They have become part of the furniture. Some of this old clutter has become fashionable in certain quarters now. For some reason an old Mangel Wurzel fork and a varnished scythe is just the thing to decorate a pub’s wall. Hang an old multi-pointed harrow over their table and watch them carefully trying to gauge the strength of the chains that keep it from spoiling their cheeseboard! Why don’t we clear the stuff out? It’s that big, omnipresent barrier-gene that all us blokes have in our DNA. Once an item is ‘put into stock’, there it must stay. It may one day be useful. It could be repaired. Some parts of it could be used as spares. They won’t of course. It will never happen. So there it lies in its rusting, moulding, dust. We are just as guilty here on the farm as are

multitudes of others around the countryside. Old picking buckets hang on rusty nails; they last held fruit two decades ago. Their canvas skirts drape forlornly down, riddled with holes where a multitude of critters have chewed away over the years. They still provide nesting sites for a few regulars… including one duck who still hasn’t learnt that her babies will need help in getting out from its depths. Boxes full of bolts without nuts, and others with nuts and no bolts. Will we ever try to marry them up? No, of course not. We just buy new ones. A complete assortment of belts that once drove longforgotten machines. In the odd, dark corner, it’s possible to even find such a machine. Now it lays there in its slowly decaying state. It’s faded and flaking paintwork just visible under the mound of younger junk that has been piled upon it since it last saw the light of day in the farmyard. Health and safety would have a field day if it was ever put to use again! Unguarded drive shafts, pulleys openly waiting for wandering fingers, hidden blades awaiting the careless foot. How we ever survived using some of these old beasts I shall never know! I mustn’t forget the sprayer tractor of course. She’s old… like me. She waits patiently beside the even older sprayer. Neither have been used for over ten years now. The old girl gets started every now and then, and like most old Fergies, she responds straight away, eager to go to work and see the light of day, only to be switched off once more and forgotten till another wet day comes along and the old lady once more beckons me over to push her starter! (of course she’s a girl… only a girl could be so darn reliable!). This sort of stuff will be familiar to many of you I’m sure. As I said at the beginning… it’s there in the shed or garage. Lurking in that cupboard in the spare room, or stuffed furtively in the back of the loft. Do we clear it out? No, of course not. It’s part of the family, it’s memories from the past. And anyway… it may be useful… perhaps… one day! John Nash

Explore the West Sussex countryside and help the Wey & Arun Canal Trust

he Wey & Arun Canal Trust will be holding its 48th annual sponsored walk, dubbed The Poodle, on Sunday 6th June. The event is open to both members and nonmembers (and well-behaved dogs) and is one of the charity’s most important fundraisers of the year, with proceeds going towards pushing ahead with future restoration projects and current towpath maintenance. This year’s route will take in the scenic West Sussex countryside and canal. The 12-mile walk around Loxwood and Plaistow will begin from the North Hall, Loxwood, and take walkers along the canal as far as Brewhurst Lock and then through countryside and woodland to Winterton Hall in Plaistow. The afternoon route follows paths north of Plaistow and back to the canal at Bonfire Hanger, returning to North Hall, Loxwood. Walkers can do either

morning or afternoon sessions, or both. The usual format is that lunch is provided, along with refreshment stops along the route, and at the time of writing plans for this remain in place. Magnus’s Caravan Adventures

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

ate in March, while dozing on the couch, Magnus overhead Nanny and Grandad talking about the caravan. He perked his ears a little because he rather liked going to the caravan. Nanny said confidently, “We’ll take the caravan down on Tuesday and on Thursday we’ll take the trailer and all the awning stuff down. We’ll get everything set up and then when 12th April comes we can go down and just chill out and enjoy ourselves.” “Confidently said,” thought Magnus knowingly, “but the plans of mice and Nannys may oft go awry.” After spending several days sorting out and finding things after so long denied from enjoying their caravan (lots of drama there) they set off. On the way Grandad decided to get petrol. Unfortunately, as he drove in, Petrol stations and large the fuel pump protection bollard jumped out at him. All Magnus could hear was a bang and a long scrape. When Grandad checked, the caravan now bore a long blue stripe and some of the side locker doors were hanging on at strange angles. Nevertheless they carried on, entered the park, sited the caravan and set it up. Magnus sensed the distress in the air and tried to comfort them. Nanny got in touch with the insurance and that’s another story in itself. Two days later they went down again with the trailer and the main awning. “Let’s take Izzy to help us,” suggested Nanny. “No, we can do it ourselves,” replied Grandad. Magnus rolled his eyes – Grandad was soooo independent. They arrived and got all the bits out of the trailer. There were a lot of bits. Nanny sorted them into the appropriate places. She sort of knew where which bits went where because they had done it last year.

Once they had threaded the awning through the channel at the top, it was time to start joining the poles and putting them in place. First they tried the centre pole (because that was where you were supposed to start). To reach it she climbed the steps. As it was windy-ish the awning billowed and she went with it. Crash on the ground. Lying there a bit stunned, she assured both Grandad and Magnus who had come over that she was alright. And got up again. Different steps were chosen. About an hour later, and the collapse of every pole and bar and bit of awning implement breaking up, Nanny announced, “That’s it! We’ll take it back home and bring the other blow-up awning.” So home they all went. When they went down to the caravan again, it was to caravans don’t mix! stay. They went without the awning for a few days just to get used to it again and ensure Magnus’s walks were well established – beach and dog walk were judged satisfying to both Magnus, Nanny and Grandad. It was Grandad’s turn to walk first in the morning and Magnus loved those the best because all the smells were fresh. Finally, Nanny announced (she does tend to be bossy) that they would erect the awning the next day. Magnus found a great (read safe) viewing spot from under the car, wise canine that he is. The awning was finally erected without too much palaver. Later, inevitably, they had to do some adjustments as the panels were on the wrong sides, and zips weren’t done properly. And when the storm came in early May it blew in and had to be re-adjusted all over again. But that didn’t concern Magnus, he loved his caravan life and he loved his home life back on that little farm near Billingshurst. Yvonne Fleece

Wisborough Green Primary School parents launch new ‘Wishlist’

The Wisborough Green School Wishlist is designed to reach out to parents, carers, local businesses and the community to enable all to easily donate funds and provide vital support in these exceptionally difficult times. The Spaniel Diaries

ell it has been a very exciting time for us Spaniels. I knew something was up as the suitcases came out. I was a little suspicious at first as sometimes Mum drops us at the kennels and we have a whole week without her. To be honest I actually find it quite peaceful as I’m not required to go training and I can sleep all day. Mav, however, finds it odd and pesters me to play with him. I was delighted when I saw our blankets and bowls being packed as this means we are off to somewhere new with loads of new sniffs and long walks. We were put into the box on wheels and were in there for a long time so I knew it was going to be good! We ended up in a place called Cornwall where we had a wonderful time running on the beaches and swimming in the sea. I did have to laugh at Mav, he’s such and idiot with his unusual swimming style – flappy paddling is the only way to describe it, it’s certainly not graceful like mine! We were so lucky with the weather on our holiday. We haven’t been as lucky since, it’s been soo cold. Mum is moaning and saying we really shouldn’t have the heating on in May – I think we should as I love to find a warm place to snooze the afternoon away, Mum says I should have been a cat! Mum is also annoyed she can’t get the plants put out in the garden as they will die in this cold, every window sill is covered in plants, hopefully some are those round red things again – I love picking those off and chewing them up, Mum is cross when she catches me but it’s worth it! I really must teach Mav to do the same! I have

been digging holes in the garden instead, mum isn’t happy about this either but I feel I need to improve the landscaping aspect. We have been doing lots of extra training over the last few weeks as mum really makes the most of the longer days. Sometimes I can’t wait for winter to come so I can take up my place in front of the fire for the evening instead of running around after smelly old canvas dummies. Mav is an idiot though and will happily run around after them all day much to Mum’s delight. He really is a little teacher’s pet, I shall look to stealing his food and his bed whenever I possibly can. Mum has been working with the big grass munching machine and has grand ideas that she will be able to have us follow it when she is riding it – what an earth does she think we are? Carriage dogs? Last time I checked I was a Spaniel not a Dalmatian, I have far more important things to do such as rummaging in hedges looking for mice and bunnies. There is one walk we have to stay on our leads for as rare birds are nesting, people are very excited about this and can’t wait to see the little black tern’s hatch. I don’t mind, and it teaches Mav good manners too – I’ve a good mind to teach him some manners if he wakes me up again by dropping his toys on my head… There is talk of a picnic as soon as the weather warms up. I’m really hoping so, I do love a good picnic and hopefully they’ll leave Mav at home so there will be more food for me! Until next time, stay safe. Billy. Jeannette Douglas

The Garden Goddess

ris was the goddess of the rainbow in Greek mythology. I have a thing for Greek mythology, and I love Irises. The large, bearded types unfurl at this time of year and they reflect the colours of the spectrum from deepest purple, through dusky orange, eggyolk yellow and the most delicate of blues, to the brightest of whites. They comprise of standard petals, which are carried aloft over the graceful fall petals, which arch downwards. From the upper bases of the falls grow groups of fuzzy hairs called beards and from this the bearded Iris gets her name. Even the foliage is attractive: large pale green swords that shoot straight upwards from the earth. Bearded Irises love full sun and prefer to have their fleshy rhizomes (the underground stems) near the soil surface so they can take full advantage of the sun’s warmth. They actually prefer a more impoverished soil, so if your soil is a bit thin and dry they may be perfect for your garden. As the clumps become overcrowded the centres die out. Dig them up immediately after flowering and chop them into single healthy rhizomes, each with a fan of leaves. Shorten

each fan with scissors by about half, then replant about 30cm apart in another sunny spot so that the rhizomes are just visible under the surface. Although they like drier conditions make sure they are watered in and looked after for a few weeks until established. But really you don’t need to do much to them. Overly enriched soil is not a friend to the iris, which might decline to flower in such conditions. My best flowering plants are in the driest, most sun-baked part of my plot! But for those who have shadier gardens and boggier conditions try the nonbearded Iris sibirica. I have one in a sun-dappled spot by a water feature. Its leaves are greener and grassier, which complements the water, and it has lovely rich blue flowers which look particularly nice in the shade. I also like Iris ensata, which I plant by my pool at the water’s edge. It’s also a good choice in borders if you garden on richer soil than mine. So, invoke the power of the Goddess Iris in your garden, and enjoy the rainbow of colour. Happy gardening. Rachel Leverton

It’s time for another Community Gardening Event! Station Road Community Gardens, Saturday 12th June from 9.30 am

ollowing on from the successful gardening day held on 12th October 2019 when all involved had a brilliant day, with MP Jeremy Quin lending a hand, all was set to replicate this day in March 2020 when along came COVID 19 and with it the first lockdown! As a consequence the gardens, like many of us, suffered without some much needed love and attention. As a result of the good news regarding the Government road map out of lockdown, we are planning to resume our Community Gardening Events. The next one will be held on Saturday 12th June from 9.30am to help restore this fantastic community site to its former glory. Everyone is invited to join the Friends of Station Road Gardens team in preparing the gardens for the coming summer. The Friends have been restarting some long overdue maintenance in the front flower beds over

the last couple of months, and they are now beginning to look more like they have in previous years. However, after over a year with very little opportunity for regular maintenance many of the other beds are in need of some TLC. We have received a number of generous donations from Parishioners, and as a result, Station Road Community Gardens are continuing to evolve. So why not come along, if only for a couple of hours as every little help would be much appreciated. You don’t have to be an expert gardener, just be willing to help with some weeding, clipping, dead heading or general tidying up for a few hours. If you can bring your own tools (spade, fork, trowel, secateurs) this would be really helpful… and we’ll endeavour to provide refreshments if COVID restrictions allow, so bring a cup too! All of this help will be great in getting the gardens ready for our next Community Summer Event…
