elcome to the June issue of Village Tweet with the focus on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrating her 70-year reign. Many articles in this issue touch on the Jubilee to a lesser or greater extent but the main events going on in Billingshurst are listed on page 47. It’s not all about the Jubilee of course. For example we have the welcome return of the Billingshurst Show and Carnival Procession after a two-year gap due to COVID. See page 18. The Loxwood Joust returns to Loxwood Meadows in August – booking is now open for discounted tickets. See page 36. Also coming to Loxwood Meadows is The Country Brocante Summer Fair – see ad opposite. The Big Gig is another great event to try. See page 9. These are just a few of the summer events – check out the three pages of What’s On events starting on page 48. Grahame

A life of service
he month of June has a national call to remember and give thanks for her Majesty the Queen’s service to the country. Looking around the communities of our country there will be a wonderful collection of celebrations to honour and remember what our Queen has given in her years of faithful service. In her Coronation ceremony of 2nd June 1953 our Queen made solemn promises to lead our country and uphold law and faith. Over her long life of service, the Queen has often spoken in her public broadcasts about her Christian faith and how it has been the foundation of her life. So much could be quoted but I came across this recently from 2008: “I hope that, like me, you will be comforted by the example of Jesus of Nazareth who, often in circumstances of

great adversity, managed to live an outgoing, unselfish and sacrificial life… He makes it clear that genuine human happiness and satisfaction lie more in giving than receiving; more in serving than in being served.” (Christmas Broadcast 2008) Each of us can serve in a way that makes a difference to our communities and families. There are many who hold service as a foundation of their life. As you reflect on those who you know in your own life, many will come to mind who live with this attitude to others. How wonderful if in this time of national thanks for her Majesty the Queen’s life of continuing service we could all rekindle our commitment to serve others.

Run Barns Green launches new logo to celebrate 40 years
R
un Barns Green started way back in 1982 and to celebrate 40 years of running in Barns Green has unveiled its 40th anniversary logo which will be used to promote this very special local event throughout 2022. Run Barns Green is made up of three races; a half marathon and a 10k and a new race for youngsters details about which will be announced very soon. Run Barns Green will take place on Sunday 25th September 2022. Run Barns Green Race Director, Nigel Currie said, “We are delighted to unveil our special 40th anniversary logo for this year. It is remarkable that the small village of Barns Green has been able to stage such a big event for 40 years. It is great testament to the dozens of volunteers and supporters from in and around the village that the event has kept going for so long and grown in stature and reputation. We will be adding a third race to our event and we will be announcing details of our new race for youngsters very soon.” Run Barns Green was cancelled in 2020 because of the pandemic but was able to go ahead last
September when just over 1300 runners registered for the two races which follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Dragons Green, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. The race also goes through the magnificent grounds of Christ’s Hospital School and throughout the race routes there are live bands playing to encourage the runners. There is plenty of free parking, chip timing for each runner in both races and there are also pacemakers running who will help runners to achieve their target finish time. As part of the Run Barns Green’s ongoing sustainability programme all finishers receive a wooden medal at the end of the race. Registrations for the race are open on the Run Barns Green website: runbarnsgreen.org.uk For further information contact Nigel Currie, Chairman, Run Barns Green, tel: (01403) 730777 or 07774 229305. Raspberry Swiss Roll METHOD
Easy to make!
1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas 5 and line a 23x33cm Swiss roll tin with greaseproof baking paper. 2. Place the eggs, sugar and vanilla paste into a bowl and whisk together until pale, fluffy and thickened. 3. Sieve the flour into the mixture and carefully fold it in, preserving as much air as possible. Pour into the tin and spread it evenly with the spatula. Bake for 10-12 minutes. 4. Place a sheet of baking paper, slightly bigger than the tray, onto a work surface and dust with caster sugar. Turn the sponge out onto the paper, peel off the baking paper on the bottom of the sponge and set aside to cool a little. Pour the double cream and vanilla extract into a large bowl and whip to soft peaks. 5. Make the jam. Heat a pan, add the sugar, lemon zest and juice and cook for 3-4 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Throw in the raspberries and cook for 3-5 minutes until they break down and thicken. Set aside to cool. 6. Spread the jam over the sponge, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the jam, then sprinkle over the whole raspberries. Starting with the longest edge of the sponge and using the baking paper to help, roll the sponge up tightly. Keep rolling until the sponge rolls off the baking paper. Dust with extra caster or icing sugar.
Preparation time: 30 minutes. Cooking time: 10 to 30 minutes. Serves 6-8

Billingshurst Fire Station news round-up
T
his month we celebrated Ben Marshall successfully completing his Crew Manager development phase to progress onto Competent stage. This is a process that takes at least 18 months and involves extensive practical and theoretical assessments. For the final stage, CM Marshall was required to lead an exercise to demonstrate a safe and effective resolution to an emergency incident, while acting as the Incident Commander. On this occasion, Ben oversaw a simulated Road Traffic Collision, and had to organise the release of a trapped driver while also in Command of several Fire Crews. CM Marshall demonstrated his competence to a good standard and resolved the incident/exercise and as a result is now considered ready to be in charge should a real incident occur. Congratulations to Ben for reaching this impressive milestone in his career. Over the recent weeks and months our team at Billingshurst have noticed a steep climb in anti-social fire starting, where logs, bushes and rubbish are being set alight in often dangerous conditions. Now that we are moving into the summer months and the grass and
vegetation is drying out, reckless fires have the potential to rapidly grow out of control, potentially threatening property and lives. We are urging everyone to be sensible and to be especially careful, only have a fire if in a safe condition and to ensure cigarettes are out before disposing of them. Finally, the crew had the pleasure of attending the Plaistow and Loxwood Maypole Fête where we had the opportunity to talk to a wide range of people about fire safety, we were also able to offer our free Safe and Well Service where appropriate. We also enjoyed showing people around the fire engine as always. If you missed us this time, keep an eye out for further local events where we plan to make an appearance! If you or someone you know would benefit from a free Safe and Well visit, or you would like more information on these, please visit our website: www.westsussex.gov.uk/ fire-emergencies-and-crime/west-sussex-fire-andrescue-service Twitter: @Station49Fire Facebook: Billingshurst Fire Station Andy Buddle, Billingshurst Fire Station Photos: Ben Marshall (centre) on his qualifying exercise

Dandelion Farewells supports local community with creation of Funeral Options Resources Fair Dandelion Farewells, the independent funeral director based in Wisborough Green, was delighted to hold their second informative and relaxed Funeral Options Resources Fair in Wisborough Green Village Hall. Gently delivering their ‘in the community for the community’ ethos to the full, the event was created to let visitors ask questions and to inform, reassure and help people to prepare for the possibility of needing to arrange a funeral for themselves or a loved one. The event tied-in closely with Dying Matters Awareness Week and, partnering with charities, suppliers and other professionals, this well-attended unique event included stone carving demonstrations from Tilleys Stonemason and Sussex Willow who were showing the skill and care taken when weaving natural willow coffins. The Dying Matters strapline ‘Let’s Talk About it’ was very much in mind, and on-hand to provide insight and information were florists, caterers, Much Loved the online tribute company, The Ramble with their fingerprint jewellery and a selection of memory keepsakes. In addition, visitors were also given the opportunity to support the Dandelion Farewells Child Bereavement Support Project, which provides bereavement resources in the form of books and training for local schools and groups. Judith Dandy, Director of Dandelion Farewells explained the reasons behind the event saying “We strongly believe that it is important to be able to find out more, browse with no pressure and to have the chance to ask the questions that are important for you. With few avenues to explore the many choices that are available in advance, our event brings together ideas and options, whilst starting the journey for Dandelion Farewells to become a friendly, familiar face that can be called upon for assurance and support when needed. I have to give a huge thank you to all of the resources and businesses who gave their time to be here, chat and answer questions. We could not have done it without them.” During the afternoon, people were also invited to attend the ‘My Wishes, My Way’ presentation. This programme has been created to be a light-hearted and myth-busting soft guide to the choices and costs associated with funerals. Anyone who wishes to attend one of these sessions can contact Dandelion Farewells for the next scheduled dates. In addition to Dandelion Farewells’ own comprehensive range of resources and options for the choices to be considered; further information at the event was contributed by recommended celebrants, local ceremony venues and a community information point which presented details on companies offering specialised bereavement support. For further information, please contact Dandelion Farewells on office@dandelionfarewells.com or call 01403 701001.

Transition Time Is there such a thing as a mid-life crisis?
W
e’ve all heard the term ‘mid-life crisis.’ But what is it exactly? The psychoanalyst Elliott Jaques first suggested the concept in 1957. He hadn’t completed any research though, basing his assertion solely on a few autobiographies of famous men. He declared that men in their mid-30s go through a depressive period when they contemplate their mortality for the first time. Jaques didn’t include women in this sweeping statement, citing the menopause, claiming it “obscured” women’s midlife transitions! Gail Sheehy then popularised the idea in the ’70s. She based her assertions on rudimentary research from Yale, involving just 40 male subjects. In spite of this small sample, she confidently stated that the midlife crisis starts in the 40th year and ends at 45½, which seems oddly specific. More recent research suggests that we all go through three to five major transitions in our lives, some voluntary and some involuntary. They might be personal, including serious illness, major career change, birth, or divorce, or they might be due to external factors such as a house fire, bankruptcy, death of a close family member or a pandemic. It can take five years or more to completely work through just one of these transitions so we could each spend 30-50% of our lives in transition. It makes a lot of sense therefore to learn some strategies for dealing with change… First, accept that things change. Try not to fight or resist, and don’t go into denial. Acknowledge the change and lean into it. Embrace the fact that although not all change is bad, even positive change brings stress. A new baby is joyful, but stressful, even if you planned for it. The same goes for starting a new business. During transition periods it helps to stick to
routines. Go for a walk or a run every day; make time to watch your favourite TV show, play five-a-side or practise your piano… whatever gives your life structure. These routines act as anchors to remind us that some things are still the same, and they give our brains a chance to recharge. Eat healthily. Stress can make us crave comfort food or alcohol. Concentrate on buying and eating healthy foods but allow a few treats too. Exercise even if you don’t want to. Walking at a brisk pace clears your mind and bathes your brain in feel-good hormones. Have plenty of early nights. Set a regular bedtime and stick to it. Regular sleep really does refresh you and help you think more clearly. Find a support group. This can be a formal group, such a bereavement group, or the informal support of a few good friends or family members. No one can do everything alone. Asking for help is a mature, sensible approach to coping with transition. Be proactive about changes. What can you do to make the transition happen more smoothly? Write the steps down you need to take and work through them one by one. When you look back you’ll be surprised how far you’ve come. Most transitions, even positive ones, involve a grieving period for the old life, where we come to terms with what we’ve lost or given up; a period of readjustment, which might seem chaotic, when we change habits, shed relationships, learn new skills, maybe even move house or continent; followed by a new beginning, where we can finally see a clear path ahead of us. We can’t ignore transitions and we can’t will them away. When we learn to deal with change we can accept it, embrace it, and use it to move forward in our life. Tracey Anderson

Billingshurst Lions – an Important Message
T
his is a reminder that Billingshurst & District Lions Club participate in a Lions International initiative called ‘Message in a Bottle’. Throughout the British Isles, more than seven million people keep personal and medical details alongside their milk, fruit and veg in the fridge – by completing a form safely tucked inside a distinctive green and white sealed bottle. The Form allows you to record: • An individual’s full name (with passport photograph if possible for identification). • An individual’s doctor’s name, surgery address and telephone number. • A brief description of any medical conditions the individual is suffering from. • Allergies and allergic reaction to any medication. • Names, addresses and phone numbers of two people who may be contacted in an emergency. • Details of any pets that may be on the premises and need looking after. The bottles also contain two small stickers, one for the usual entry door and the second for the fridge door. In an emergency, stickers help paramedics, police, fire-fighters or social services personnel quickly locate the bottle giving vital medical information, saving valuable time in diagnosis in possible life threatening situations.
The Lions also offer a complementary ‘Message in a Wallet’ – a folded credit card-sized record card, with similar information to be carried in a wallet or purse, should an emergency occur outside the home. Both Bottles and Wallet Cards are available FREE from the Lions Bookshop in Jengers Mead, at the Billingshurst Community Centre and at a number of local pharmacies.
Another Reminder – ‘Feeding the Lions’ Billingshurst Lions would like to thank everyone who has contributed during the past year to the success of their FUNdraising initiative to ‘Feed the Lions’ with your surplus loose change. Collecting Jars are available from the Lions Bookshop in Jengers Mead, where full ones will be gratefully received in exchange for an empty replacement. Follow Billingshurst Lions on Facebook and on their website www.billingshurstlions.org. Harvey Holmes – Press Officer, Billingshurst & District Lions Club Photos show the distinctive Message Bottles with the form for completion, green cross stickers and cards for Message in a Wallet, and Collecting Jars available for ‘Feed the Lions’

A Good Read June’s selection from book reviewer Tash Donovan The Quiet at the End of the World – Lauren James This novel is a deeply human story about a ‘soft apocalypse’ – what happens when humans stop being able to reproduce, and you have to slowly watch your entire species go extinct as you grow up? Teenagers Lowrie and Shen are the youngest humans left on earth. In February 2024, the population of the world was infected with a virus that made them all infertile. The only humans conceived after this date were from eggs frozen at fertility clinics. Now it’s 2109 and the population of the earth is so small that the last people have congregated in central London. They make a proxy family to protect Lowrie and Shen. The young people are taught the life skills on which they will depend when they are the last people left alone. Alongside the remaining humans are robots working to protect the planet and the people, including lifeguard robot Mitch, who patrols the banks of the Thames ready to save anyone in difficulty. It is Mitch who saves Lowrie and Shen when a helicopter crashes near where they are searching for treasure. The pilot had a seizure and crashed into Big Ben. Over the next few days, others start to have seizures and fall unconscious; Lowrie and Shen need to find a way to help them before they really are the only two people left on the planet. The Quiet at the End of the World is a blend of philosophy and sci-fi. Woven through the plot is the story of Maya Waverley, told through old social media posts. Through Maya, Lowrie learns all about the past, the virus, the symptoms, and what happened to the world, and Maya.
Beautiful, melancholic, and hopeful – this is a book written for the times we live in. The Quiet at the End of the World might restore your faith in humanity. Gallant – VE Schwab Olivia Prior is an orphan, and the black sheep at Merilance School for Independent Girls. She has to deal with lessons and bullies and the fact that she cannot speak, and no-one understands signlanguage. She spends her free time drawing and studying her mother’s old journal, which is full of strange inkblot illustrations. The journal tracks her mother’s love affair with Olivia’s father, his mysterious death, and her own descent into madness. The journal closes with one final, desperate entry addressed to Olivia: ‘The shadows are not real. The dreams can never hurt you. And you will be safe as long as you stay away from Gallant.’ Then Olivia receives a letter from an uncle she’s never heard of, requesting that she goes to Gallant, which is the Prior family estate. At first she’s entranced by the colourful surroundings, and the kind staff, and even the house ghouls. The only person who is hostile towards her is her cousin Matthew. Gallant is a place of secrets. Olivia is forbidden to leave the house at night and is strangely drawn to the crumbling wall at the edge of the garden, which holds back a menace that no one wants to talk about. This is a multi-layered modern-day gothic novel. It has it all: a haunted house, a dark, forbidding atmosphere, a tragic love story, and a rebellious heroine desperate to find her place in the world. Schwab’s use of eerie imagery pairs with the illustrations to produce the magical feel of a novel which has the potential to become a classic.

Triumphant trekkers return from Sahara trek for St Catherine’s
45
incredible trekkers have returned from a four-day trek across Saharan sand dunes in aid of local hospice, St Catherine’s Hospice. The trekkers trekked across ancient dried-up river beds and vast sun-baked plains before enjoying spectacular desert sunsets and sleeping under the stars each evening. As well as trekking, the two groups enjoyed a camel ride and celebratory dinners in Marrakech once their treks were finished. Paul Talmey was one of the 45 trekkers who took on this incredible challenge to support his local hospice. He said, “The Sahara trek was an absolutely incredible experience. It was a great group of wonderful people and I made lots of memories to cherish.” The efforts of the trekkers will have a huge impact on local families living with terminal illness across our community. The group have raised over £136,000 so far towards local hospice care, with donations still coming in. Michaela Clements, Fundraising Manager at
St Catherine’s spent time trekking in the Sahara with the hospice supporters. She said, “I’ve always known our community of St Catherine’s supporters are brilliant. As I trekked across the largest hot desert in the world, I watched people push themselves out of their comfort zones to raise money for our hospice. Their dedication to supporting others in their community is amazing. Many trekkers have experienced our hospice care personally and are committed to making sure more families can have our expert help and support in the future. The Sahara was stunning, it was a very special trip.” There’s still time to show your support for the Sahara trekkers. You can donate to their JustGiving page at: www.justgiving.com/ campaign/stchsahara2020 . Feeling inspired? Heidi’s Hectic Holiday
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
H
eidi the Schnauzer who was still on holiday at the farm, pricked up her ears. They were going in the car to the caravan. Her last visit was ages ago just after she had arrived at the farm and she wasn’t 100% sure she liked it. There was so much kerfuffle with leads when they had gone out even just for a wee. But she and Magnus had a conversation and he had assured her this time would be different. And he was right. Was he ever right! Once they had arrived and unpacked, it was the same old with the leads and Heidi gave Magnus a ‘Schnauzer look’ – black eyes glaring and ears pricked up. Magnus reassured her it would be all right so she gave him the benefit of the doubt. The next morning Nanny and Grandad got all sorts of stuff together and after a tense discussion, they settled to work. It wasn’t too long before the shape of a dog play area emerged. Although it took the humans all morning, the finished product looked really good. Now the dogs could easily go outside by themselves and do a wee – especially Poppy widdle pants. The next day Heidi and Magnus were outside enjoying the freedom and fresh air, Poppy caught sight of Tim, the Important Person there. She put her head through the wires and to her delight, her body followed all by itself. She bounded over to say hello to Tim who patted her and then put her back. In no time at all she was outside again. Tim told Nanny so she laughed and huffed too. Then she ferreted a roll of chicken wire out of the trailer and she and Grandad spent another whole morning putting the chicken wire over the original wire fencing. When it was all finished the humans had to go inside and have an afternoon siesta.

Just because they had play area it didn’t mean they didn’t go for walks. Usually in the afternoon they went down to the dog walk and had a really good run and sniff. One afternoon, they went over the bridge to Medmerry Reserve. They came to the pond, covered in duckweed. This is where Poppy had fallen in and learned to swim and Nanny was watching to make sure she didn’t fall in again. Heidi, who was just out of her sight, fell in. As an older dog, she panicked more and reached to closest bit of shore she could, also the highest bit and she couldn’t get out. She tried and tried and Nanny encouraged her to move along, but with Schnauzer stubbornness she wouldn’t move. Sighing, Nanny managed to put one foot down the bank and was just leaning over to pull Heidi out when she lost her balance and down she went. She landed on her back with her feet in the air and her head hovering over the pond. She reached over and hauled a wet and bedraggled Heidi who looked like she was wearing green polka dots, out of the pond. Heidi was fine once she got out had a good shake and just wandered away leaving Nanny cast with her feet in the air. Some passers-by came to the rescue and hauled Nanny on to her feet. The man told her she should have put the dogs on a lead. Nanny was sorry she’d asked for their help. By the time they got back to the caravan, Heidi had dried out. Exhausted, all three dogs and Nanny collapsed for the rest of the afternoon. All too soon it was time to go home, so after one last free walk they packed the car and came home to that small farm near Billingshurst. Yvonne Fleece

Scouts & Guides / About the house
Petworth Park Camp 2022
S
couts & Guides have been camping over the May Bank Holiday weekend in Petworth Park since 1979 and this year we returned following two virtual camps in 2020 and 2021. Present were Scouts & Guides from across the area including Billingshurst, Storrington, Fittleworth, Petworth, Midhurst, Plaistow, Easebourne, Pulborough and Ifold. On Saturday everyone arrived and set up camp before our opening ceremony which was a very emotional moment; to have 300 people all together again in one place, many of whom had never been to the camp before as they should have come for the first time in 2020 or 2021. On Saturday afternoon we assembled our World Record Attempt for the longest line of sleeping bags in the world. The record stands at 258, we achieved 326 and our special guests the High Sheriff of West Sussex James Whitmore and his wife were our independent witnesses and counters and they got into the spirit of the attempt with great enthusiasm. The rest of the afternoon was spent on our Platinum Challenge – 70 tasks ranging from crossing a monkey bridge and launching a bottle rocket to making a paper plane or singing campfire songs at the subcamp leaders! Sunday is our main activity day with a huge range of things to do including climbing and abseiling, mountain biking, archery, rifle shooting, a 65ft inflatable obstacle course, make and do, paddleboarding, fire lighting, axe throwing, aerial runway, grass sledges, backwoods cooking, knot boards, laser clay pigeon shooting and the reaction challenge. All of the young people had a great time
and not even a sprinkling of rain could slow things down. That’s not all, the Scouts & Guides also cooked their meals over fires, played wide games, did quizzes and taskmaster in their subcamps, explored the park and most importantly made new friends from around the area that they wouldn’t be able to do any other way. It was wonderful to be all together back under canvas in the park and a huge Thank You goes to the young people for being so fantastic but also to the huge group of volunteers who make this camp and Scouting & Guiding happen throughout our area every week. From organising the camp to first aid, driving the minibus, cooking the meals and even cleaning the toilets, everyone was so pleased to be back together and that is what it is all about. For more information about Scouting in Petworth & Pulborough District please visit www.pandpscouts.org.uk. ollowing an extended pandemic-triggered hiatus, Wisborough Green Scout Group will be reopening its doors in September to Beavers (aged 6-8) and Cubs (aged 8-10.5); we are looking to reopen Scouts (aged 10.5-14) in early 2023. So why get involved? Scouting is more than a club that you go to once a week; our current drive is #skillsforlife and this is not just for the young people. Scouting works to equip our young people with skills to help them in life including adventure, a love of the outdoors, relationships, teamwork, a greater awareness of the world around them, personal challenge and, of course, fun. This applies to the adults as well. We are looking for people to join this exciting adventure and return Scouting to the heart of Village life in Wisborough Green. We need leaders and helpers to support the units and we also need those people who get involved behind

Jubilee
The Platinum Jubilee It’s a mug’s game!
U
nless you’ve been living as a hermit it can’t have escaped your notice that a significant event takes place this month. That’s right… we all have an extra day’s holiday to look forward to. Oh, and Her Majesty celebrates her Platinum Jubilee! Jubilees have always been significant events in the history of our country. Even as I type the shop shelves are groaning under the weight of commemorative mugs, and TV adverts exhort us to send off for decorative coins. I’d always assumed that Royal souvenirs were a relatively modern invention, but in fact they have been a popular way of marking royal jubilees and weddings for the last three centuries. The earliest known English commemorative items date from the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. They must have been a hit because more followed for his Coronation in 1661 and wedding in 1662! At first such items were purchased only by the wealthy, but as new manufacturing methods developed the ordinary general public was able to buy a little piece of Royal history too. What they bought hasn’t changed a great deal over the years: the most popular items are and have always been coins, stamps and ceramics, especially mugs. Oh, us Brits do love a Royal mug. Maybe it’s related to our love of tea! Special issue coins were first used to mark the
34
Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. The majority of jubilee coins are issued in ‘crown’ size. This has nothing to do with a royal crown but is in fact the size of an old crown coin, which was equal in value to five shillings (25p). The reason for this is that the large size of the coin allows for more detail. These special coins are not intended for general use and are almost always collected in uncirculated mint condition. The first stamps associated with a Royal event were those issued in 1887, the year of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Interestingly they were not intended as commemorative issues and were never released as a set. Specific Jubilee sets of stamps were first issued in 1935 for George V’s Jubilee. Ceramics have always been popular Royal souvenirs. Commemorative jugs, vases, mugs, and plates survive in significant numbers from the reign of George III onwards. But it seems the imaginations of the souvenir producers know no bounds. Everything from wallpaper to underwear has been given some sort of a Royal twist in times past. Because most souvenirs are now mass produced they have little commercial value longterm, but they’re fun and colourful, and a nice little piece of history. I still have the Silver Jubilee coin I was given at primary school in 1977! Sarah Davey

T
he gauntlet has been thrown down in the battle for the Crown of Loxwood. The UK’s most spectacular immersive medieval and jousting festival, the Loxwood Joust, returns to create more excitement as the clash for a successor to the throne takes place on the 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th August. Building on fast-paced battles and the challenges that have shaped the story’s mediaeval mayhem and gallant chilvery, visitors to the Joust – the people of Loxwood – will be immersed in the plot to decide who should be their King or Queen. In the magical Kingdom of Loxwood, be transported back in time to Medieval England as you interact with townsfolk and peasants and rub shoulders with royalty. Witness full-contact jousting, daring displays of weaponry, archery and cannon fire and the impressive knight on knight combat, that will be waged in the quest for Regent. Entering the realm via the magical forest, guests will be met by an array of colourful characters, each with a story to tell, rumours to spread or a favour to ask. Accept the right invitations, choose a quest and improve your standing from Citizen to ‘Squire of Loxwood’ in this unique day of adventure, intrigue, fun and merriment. The Living History Village plays out life in the middle ages and falconry displays, torture with the executioner, the witches’ incantations and an insight into the spirits of nature will capture your imagination and draw you into times past. And for those looking to experience and savour
authentic recreations from a mediaeval nobleman’s salver, the banqueting hall is the place to be. With dishes of the finest fayre served to accommodate both traditional and vegetarian palates; jesters, storytellers, live music and riddlers will lead a merry dance and embroil you in gossip and laughter. New for 2022 is the creation of Scribe School and the Copper Bangle-making workshops, which are adding to the ever popular workshop activities such as: Handfasting ceremonies, Blacksmithing workshops, Sword school, Copper bowl making, Chain mail making, and Singing workshops with the Medieval Baebes. Danny Bacon, organiser of the Loxwood Joust commented, “Once again the magical and immersive Loxwood Joust is creating a unique family day out. Throughout the day there will be opportunities for the whole family to participate in the storyline, and our visitors really can influence who will succeed to the throne.” In the Children’s Kingdom, the young princes and princesses can use their medieval groats to try have-a-goarchery, pelt-the-peasant, non-contact sword fighting and circus school, in addition to watching court jester shows and enjoying face and wound painting too. The Loxwood Joust is excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood and has ample Free Parking. Experiences and banqueting places must be booked in advance when booking tickets at www.loxwoodjoust.co.uk. WELCOME TO YOUR HERITAGE!

“Let them eat cake!” John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
I
f there’s one thing that will always bring a smile to my face it’s a cake. Any cake. From a cream bun to a royal iced wedding cake, there is nothing to compare with the taste of one of these products of the baker’s skill. I guess, like most folk, my love goes back to those tea times of childhood. Fighting over who should have the end slice of an iced loaf. Where even a slightly dry sponge cake could be made delightfully when broken up in a deep bowl and a liberal quantity of evaporated milk poured over it! So it was a sad day when I first started my life in farming. I shared living quarters with fellow worker Ken in a converted chicken shed, and meals were at a nearby café. Breakfast and dinner were supplied, but not tea… so no cake. Then the farm’s ducks came to the rescue. To supplement their feed requirements the farmer had agreed once a week to clear all the stale goods from the local bakery. For myself and Ken this became a great treasure hunt on a Monday morning. The horsebox would be backed into the yard and the tailgate dropped. There before us was a mountain of bread, cakes, and assorted items that you find in any baker’s shop, from sausage rolls to pies and turnovers. We pounced on this like starving beggars! The bread was thrown out into long feeding troughs in the yard, the meat-containing objects followed (couldn’t take that sort of chance)… but the cakes. Oh Lordie… the cakes. Yes, they were a tad stale, but on average only slightly – at least to our taste – so we picked the best, filled our mouths, and put the tastiest-looking examples to one side for later consumption. Any stomach that could take a pint of Jersey milk straight from the cow followed by thickly spread homechurned butter from the same source has no problem dealing with a slightly tough iced fancy and a mouthful of three-day-old cream bun! The troughs were then soaked with the yard hose, the filling broken into small pieces with spades and the
ducks released for their share of the booty. They, like us, loved it! The one failure that I can recall, due to its unusual final result, was when a load rolled in one morning in early January with two sacks of Christmas puddings amongst the goodies. Now, I thought Christmas puddings lasted for years. These apparently wouldn’t for some reason. They’re were indeed very hard. We tried to break one open but even when being hit with a hammer they refused to offer themselves up for sampling. In the end we dumped them in one of the troughs and left them to soak overnight in the icy water. Next morning, nada. A thin film of brown sludge could be just scrapped off them, but otherwise solid. What had gone wrong with the baking I don’t know, but even the ducks gave up on them and we finally dumped them on the muck heap where I guess even after six decades they still repose. Some years later my own attempts in baking cakes was to finish with very similar results. I wasn’t confident enough to go for the complete beginning of flour, eggs, milk, water, etc, so it was with a bagful of ready-to-mix-and-bake packets that I ventured into my first – and last – attempt. I was going for my two favourite small cakes. Jam doughnuts and Chelsea buns. I did my best. Honest! I followed the instructions on the side of the packs to the letter. Well, I thought I did. Somehow, and I still don’t know how, I managed to replicate those aforementioned Christmas puddings. The family refused to eat them, and I confess I too gave up on the attempt. The final telling verdict on my kitchen skills was the contempt that all the garden birds showed to the delicious titbits I threw out for them. I ignored the remarks about them avoiding bent beaks from the brother-in-law and vowed to stick to boiled eggs in future. Still love cakes though, just that someone else needs to cook them! Anyone need any help in the kitchen? No? Thought not. John Nash
‘James Grieve’ of its loss of commercial use.
An occasional mini-series on apple varieties… To make a slight change let’s look at a Scottish Apple. In 1883 James Grieve of Edinburgh produced an apple which he named after himself. A very popular apple for many years until it faded from commercial orchards in the 1960’s as it can bruise quite easily and the rise of the supermarkets started to dictate the market place more than ever before. Despite this, in 1993 the Royal Horticultural Society awarded it their Medal of Garden Merit, showing their appreciation of the apple regardless
38
It’s a very useful apple in many ways. It will tolerate early frosts and still give a crop. It has a lovely sharpness that lends itself to juice and cider production and if left to fully ripen it has a lovely melting texture that is sharp but tasty. At apple identification on apple days around the country it’s an apple that often pops up so is still a popular garden variety. Still found in many nursery catalogs and garden centres around the country. John Nash

The Spaniel Diaries
W
ell, we have had a very busy time since I last added an entry to the diary. The weather has been nice and we have really made the most of it with long walks on the beach and in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Mum has been careful not to let us disturb nesting birds or wander into the path of adders by keeping us on our leads in certain places. We have been doing plenty of training and as usual, Mav, being a little sneak, has been the golden boy. I, on the other hand, found a whole chicken carcass obviously put out for the foxes by well meaning neighbours, I couldn’t believe my luck! However, mum always has a close eye on us and called me back then stole it from me! I couldn’t believe she would be so mean, she even put it back for that fatty fox to come and eat, it was a perfectly roasted example too. How dare she? I did manage to get my own back the following week by stealing a box of eggs, then Mav dropped me in it by hovering around so mum came to see what he was up to and I got caught, she wasn’t best pleased but I gave her my best cute puppy dog impression and got away with it – she loves me really! Mav has finally learnt to swim, he’s a massive idiot and just didn’t get it at all, he looked like a drowning meerkat trying to stand up in the water and thrashing with his front legs. I actually pretty much got lumbered with teaching him too. You see, mum had booked the doggy swimming pool as we don’t have much safe water near us and the
sea is too wavy and the river too fast, so off to the nice clean pool – yuk, now a stinky old ditch or pond is bliss, but that pool means work – I was asked to get in and swim for a toy, I did so – once – then went and sat in a chair sniggering while Mav was put in a life-jacket – he looked ridiculous! But he started to swim like a normal dog! Not as elegantly as me, though. I was horrified when mum dragged me out of my chair and made me swim several laps of the pool while stating it was good for my waistline – cheeky moo, she should have done several laps herself! Then the moment of truth: Mav’s life jacket was taken off and he was finally swimming on his own! Mum was very pleased and Mav was very tired which meant he left me alone all afternoon for a nice snooze so I really do hope we go again. We are off for a big adventure soon, another one of those holiday things. I’m quite excited as it means lots of new sniffs to explore; I’m glad mum and dad can’t be bothered with the hassle of the abroad thing they used to do because it means us dogs are getting out and about to some really nice places! It would be nice if they left Mav at home as he just gets so full of himself and wants to play all the time. Sometimes I indulge but I really do prefer to be left in my Billy Bubble – mum isn’t keen on my bubble as she says I go selectively deaf and apparently that’s not acceptable to her, I can’t think why! I am a free spirit but according to her I’m just strong willed… we’ll see when she next expects me to do the training thing! Jeannette Douglas

Trellis
T
rellis is under utilised in most gardens, yet it has a myriad of uses. It can cover an ugly wall or screen an ugly garden building, and it can be used on one or more sides of a patio to provide privacy. You can use it as a framework to support plants but it can also be a decorative feature in its own right. Strategically placed trellis can make a garden appear more interesting. Counterintuitively it can also provide the illusion of greater space by interrupting the line of sight and making people curious so drawing them out into the garden to explore. Most garden centres have a good range of functional and attractive trellis, readymade into units. If you can’t find exactly what you are looking for there are companies who will precision cut a specific design and size for you. Obviously, you will pay more for the privilege, but you will get exactly what you want. In a small space where you might only need one piece it can be a worthwhile investment, because in a small garden any structure is more noticeable and becomes a visual statement. If you plan to grow plants up your trellis then make sure the posts or wall that it is fixed to will support the weight of the trellis plus the fully grown plant. It can be tempting to plant a variety of climbers, but a small space often benefits from bold planting using fewer varieties. Beware of using all deciduous plants because the structure will look bare in the winter. Vines such as Vitis coignetiae, which has large

heart-shaped leaves and beautiful autumn colour are great for a large area. V. vinifera ‘Purpurea’ has very attractive leaves which as the name suggests are purple. It produces bunches of dark, tightly clustered grapes. Clematis are a good choice. C. montana is vigorous and might swamp a small trellis, but if you have the space they can be grown through other climbers and produce a fabulous summer display. Ivies are good for winter colour. Don’t assume that all ivies are dark green. H. Helix ‘Goldheart’ has super attractive yellow leaves edged in bright green while H. helix ‘Chester’ has leaves with wide cream margins and is good for brightening up a gloomy area. Passion flowers look very exotic and are a particularly good choice for a trellis. Scented climbing roses are one of my favourite plants to grow up trellis which is screening a patio. I love ‘Compassion’, which has the most beautiful blooms in pink / apricot, and a strong, sweet fragrance. Prune every winter. Remember to check trellis every year for broken or rotten supports and treat periodically with wood preservative to prolong its life and freshen its appearance. Consider adding a trellis screen to your garden this summer. Happy gardening! Rachel Leverton
