othering Sunday this year falls on 10th March, three weeks before Easter Sunday. Started in 1908 by American Anna Jarvis in memoriam for her mother, it became a recognized holiday there in 1914, where it is held on the second Sunday in May. Jarvis later regretted that it had, predictably, become too commercial. Nevertheless, it is a time to show your love and appreciation to your mother whether it be with a card (though please not that dreadful spoof Tesco ‘value’ free download!), flowers, taking her out for a meal or just telling her you love her. St Patrick’s Day Have a craic on 17th March!
W
hat are you doing on 17th March this year? You probably don’t have a clue, but if you are of Irish descent the chances are that you will be donning green attire and tucking into a plateful of bacon and cabbage and sinking a few pints of Guinness! The date is St Patrick’s Day, commemorating the death of Ireland’s patron saint on 17th March 461. Patrick was born in Roman Britain to a wealthy Christian family – his father was a deacon and his grandfather a priest. He was kidnapped and held captive by Irish raiders at the age of 16, but eventually escaped; following which he received a vision and calling to return to Ireland to preach Christianity to its heathen population. So it is that St Patrick is credited with taking Christianity to Ireland. Patrick used the three leaves of the native Irish shamrock to teach the doctrine of the Trinity. Nowadays, the shamrock and green clothing are customarily worn

Canal restoration to reach Sussex-Surrey border
C
anal boats will be able to travel to the Sussex-Surrey border on the Wey & Arun Canal for the first time in over 145 years if a new fundraising appeal launched by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) proves successful. WACT hopes to raise £365,000 and the Trust estimates that volunteer work will reduce the cost by at least 50%. The Trust hopes to start work on restoration of Gennets Bridge Lock in mid-2013. The construction of this lock will ultimately allow boats to travel northwards from the popular Loxwood Canal Centre up to the Surrey border for the first time since the canal was abandoned in the late 19th Century. “This is the next stage of an ambitious environmental and heritage conservation project in West Sussex,” said WACT director and project manager Eric Walker MBE. “Restoration of the lock will extend the recreational amenity that the canal offers to the community, will enhance the natural environment and promote biodiversity.” Reconstruction of Gennets Bridge Lock marks the next stage in the efforts by the Trust’s members who have been working to restore the
Wey & Arun Canal between Guildford in Surrey and Pulborough in West Sussex since 1970. The lock will be on the 136-mile Sussex Border Path and the 36-mile long Wey South path. Planning permission for the work at Gennets Bridge Lock was granted by Chichester District Council in October 2011 but fundraising could not start in earnest until construction on the previous lock, Southland, neared completion. WACT has already spent £20,000 on surveys and other preliminary activities. “Most of the work will be undertaken by volunteers but some critical parts of the construction project will need to be undertaken by contractors,” said Eric. “We hope to have raised enough money to enable these elements of the work to be carried out this summer, to take advantage of dry weather conditions.” To contribute to the project, or to keep a track of the fundraising progress, please visit www.weyandarun.co.uk Sally Schupke, Chairman, WACT www.weyandarun.co.uk Photo: Gennets Bridge Lock. An Inspector Calls Storrington Dramatic Society are excited to announce their production of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, running from the 7th-9th March. This drama, which takes place on a single evening in 1912, sees us at a celebratory dinner to mark the engagement of two young middle-class people, Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft. During the after dinner speech, given by Shelia’s father Arthur, a mysterious Inspector Goole arrives to question the family about the suicide of a young girl named Eva Smith. His questions soon lead each of the family members to question their possible role in her death and remind them all that their actions must have consequences. An Inspector Calls, one of Priestley’s better known works and studied in schools throughout the UK, will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Tickets £7 from Fowlers Estate Agents, Storrington, or www.storringtondramatics.co.uk

Local health screening charity celebrates 25 years
P
opular local charity, the Mary How Trust for Cancer Prevention, is celebrating its 25th anniversary and invites you to take part in its Silver Jubilee. Based in Pulborough, the Mary How Trust provides a health screening service to spot the early signs of cancer and other serious illnesses. Thanks to the fundraising support of local people and businesses, the Mary How Trust has been able to transform the lives of people like Mr John Peters from Hurstpierpoint, who received an early diagnosis of colon cancer and prostate cancer as a result of his Mary How Trust screening – even before he had John Peters and symptoms. He was able to start treatment immediately, before the cancers had time to spread. Mr Peters’ wife, Prue, told the Trust, “The outcome, had we not had a health screening, is unthinkable. We are indebted to the Mary How Trust for alerting us to two life-threatening illnesses which are now being treated. We cannot recommend this wonderful facility enough.” The Mary How Trust is entirely funded by donations from the men and women who come for health screenings, and from donors and fundraisers throughout the local community. Trust Chairman, Christopher Leaver, says, “We’re proud to thank our wonderful supporters in West Sussex and further afield for making our work possible. Their support means we’ve been here to help many people just like Mr Peters. And we look forward to helping many
10
more in the years ahead.” The charity needs your help to continue its life-changing service. They are encouraging local people to get involved and help raise funds in this Jubilee year. Marketing and Fundraising Manager, Roanne Moore-Loizides, asks, “Will you be a Jubilee Fundraiser? Will you hold an event in aid of the Mary How Trust? Please join us and help to give your friends and neighbours a healthier future!” grandson Alfie She explains, “From coffee mornings to quiz nights – every event will make a difference. Please join our Jubilee!” Jubilee Fundraisers can be individuals or groups of friends – as well as clubs, schools, and workplaces. Simply tell the Trust about your event and you’ll receive a fundraising pack and step-by-step advice. At the end of the year, there will be a prize for the top Jubilee Fundraisers. To take part in the Mary How Trust’s Silver Jubilee, please contact the Trust at 08452-410956 or www.maryhowtrust.org You will be helping people like Mrs Britten, who was able to have urgent medical treatment following her health screening. She writes, “Without the Mary How Trust, I might not have been around to enjoy my four grandchildren; many, many thanks.” Roanne Moore-Loizides

Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team (BEAT)
B
EAT has been operating as your local Community First Responder (CFR) group since 2006. CFRs are volunteers who attend certain 999 calls with the ambulance service, the idea being that as they are local, CFRs will often arrive before an ambulance so the patient will receive treatment sooner. CFRs are trained in basic life support and carry a range of medical equipment including a defibrillator, a device that could re-start a heart that had stopped. BEAT is always looking for new members to help the group provide more cover. The role is incredibly interesting and rewarding and is a great way to help people in the area you live; you may even literally save a life! Could you provide cover a few hours per week, either from home or work? Full training is given and all equipment is supplied by BEAT, a registered
charity. The role is very flexible and you can vary the times you can provide cover if needed. All of BEAT’s current members are on call around work, family and other commitments. BEAT also sets up Public Access Defibrillators in the community; to date the group has set up ten. BEAT also offers training sessions to local clubs and groups in basic life support such as how to carry out effective CPR. We would like to see as many members of the public trained in CPR as possible. If you would like to find out more about becoming a CFR, or would like details of the training sessions we offer, please contact us. How to Survive an Affair
I
t’s sad but true, that more than fifty per cent of couples will experience infidelity in their relationship. A spouse’s unfaithfulness is the most painful experience that can be inflicted in marriage, but there is a way back if both parties are committed to repairing the damage and rebuilding trust. Healing from infidelity is long, hard, painful work, and the first step is for the unfaithful spouse to stop the affair immediately. This means severing all contact and informing your spouse of all future movements and of any chance meetings or contact with your former lover. It might even be necessary to share for a time privacy controls and passwords in order to encourage a renewal of trust. Next, you need to talk openly and honestly as a couple about the affair. Experts agree, that the adulterous spouse needs to supply all the information requested by his/her betrayed partner. This willingness to talk will help to rebuild trust and reassure the offended spouse that no more secrets are being kept. Keep your discussions down to 15-30 minutes and don’t continue them if tired, emotional or upset. Discuss potential future challenges and threats to fidelity. The affair happened for a reason and you need to understand what went wrong in order to make changes for the future. Affairs rarely have just one cause, and they don’t always happen because of unhappiness or

dissatisfaction in a relationship. Commit to a new future together. Unless you both do this and are prepared to work at it, it won’t happen. This may involve spending more time together in order to reconnect as friends and romantic partners. Take a greater interest in each other’s lives and feelings and resolve to be totally honest with each other in future, even if it means taking a risk. If you are the unfaithful partner, take responsibility for what you have done. Don’t attempt to blame your spouse as this won’t heal your marriage – but showing sincere regret and remorse will. Apologise often and vow never to stray again. Your spouse needs to hear and be reassured of this regularly. Take responsibility for your future fidelity too! Be patient, kind and empathetic with each other. Accept that forgiveness will come neither quickly nor easily. The offended spouse will need to overcome pain and anger before being able to rebuild trust. Though an affair will never be forgotten, the painful memories will fade with time and forgiveness will allow you to move past the pain and rage and to reconcile with one another. Finally, consider some relationship counselling or joining a support group to help with feelings of isolation. Go to www.relate.org.uk for more information about help that is available. Foot Notes
W
hat is the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist? There is no difference. Podiatrist is the internationally accepted term, but both have the same qualifications and both need to be registered with the Health Professions Council.
What does a chiropodist/podiatrist do? They treat and advise on all matters relating to feet. Most people think of ingrown toenails, but they also treat athlete’s foot, fungal nail infections, corns, verrucae and cracked heels. What about foot pain? Yes, a good Chiropodist will be able to advise, diagnose and
provide a treatment plan for biomechanical problems of the feet as well as bunions and toe deformities. I suffer with smelly, sweaty feet. Could a Chiropodist help me? Absolutely. In some people the sweat glands of the feet are over active, producing more sweat than they should. Some people also have greater than normal amounts of bacteria on their skin and it is the reaction of the bacteria with the sweat which causes the unpleasant odour. A chiropodist will be able to advise on footwear, foot hygiene and any sprays or creams which might help. Sarah Davey

Walks to offer new perspective on canal heritage
C
anal cruises will no longer be the only way to gain an insight into the history of the Wey & Arun Canal with the launch of a new guided walk programme. From April, the Wey and Arun Canal Trust (WACT) will be offering a guided walk each month from the Canal Centre in Loxwood to give visitors a chance to find out more about the canal and the area the waterway passes through. The programme will start on Tuesday 23rd April with a 1 mile walk (Walk 1) that will head off on the canal towpath towards Brewhurst Bridge before taking in the church, old school, the site of the toll house and the Onslow Arms in Loxwood. As well as learning more about the history of the canal, the Loxwood Link and restoration work on the waterway, walkers will also learn more about the history of the village of Loxwood itself and include a visit to Brewhurst Mill. This walk will be repeated on Thursday 8th July. The other walks planned include a 2.5 mile route (Walk 2) that will take place on Wednesday 22nd May and Tuesday 20th August, and a 3.5 mile walk (Walk 3) that is scheduled to take place
on Thursday 20th June and Wednesday 18th September. Similar to Walk 1, both of the longer routes will include sights and history of Loxwood, Brewhurst Mill and details of the history of the canal, the Loxwood Link and restoration work on the waterway. Walk 2 will also take in the new lock and road crossing at Loxwood, Devil’s Hole Lock and the Old Wharf building, among other local sights. Walk 3 will take visitors further north of Devil’s Hole Lock to include visits to Southlands Lock where new lock gates have recently been installed and nearby Gennets Wood. The cost of the walks is £4 per head with groups limited to 20 people, so booking is recommended. The meeting time for each of the walks is 10am at the Canal Centre, with the walk starting at 10.15am. Places can be booked by emailing the Canal Centre: canalcentre@weyandarun.co.uk or visit www.weyandarun.co.uk for further information. 3D TV – The Next Dimension
hen James Cameron’s Avatar burst into cinemas in 2009, the world woke up to the potential for three-dimensional films to astound, amaze and capture our imaginations. The ground-breaking movie started a trend for spectacular effects in cinematography, and many new films are now shown in 3D, as well as major sporting events including London’s Olympic Games. There’s no doubt that watching 3D films at the cinema can be thrilling, but is it worth trying to recreate the experience at home? You might be surprised to learn that the cost can be only slightly more than a regular set-up. You will need to get a 3D compatible TV, 3D glasses and access to 3D programmes or films. There are two types of 3D technology. Passive 3D is the type used in cinemas. To watch, you wear cheap lightweight glasses that allow your eyes to see differently polarised light. Your brain combines what each eye sees to create the 3D image. You can also get passive 3D glasses that clip onto normal specs. Active 3D gives you a higher resolution picture, but the glasses are bulkier to wear. While passive 3D TVs generally come with several pairs of glasses, you may have to buy active ones separately, at around £30 a pair. They work by synchronising with the TV and playing back rapidly blinking images to
your eyes. (For this reason, manufacturers warn that they are unsuitable for people with a history of epilepsy or strokes.) 3D televisions can cost anything from under £500 to thousands. Larger screens will give you a better experience. With smaller sets, you may need to sit closer to the screen to get the full effect. All 3D TVs can display 2D pictures as well – you simply switch off the 3D function and they become a normal high-definition TV. Once you have your equipment, you can decide what you are going to watch. For films, you get the best picture quality with Blu-ray. You will need to invest in a Blu-ray player and films on Blu-ray disk. You can also play Blu-rays (and 3D games) on a Sony PlayStation 3 console. You can watch other programmes on Sky’s own 3D channel, which comes with its more expensive monthly packages. With Virgin Media and BT Vision, you can watch 3D films on demand. The BBC occasionally shows sporting events in 3D on its HD channel. Currently, 3D television is definitely an optional extra, but if growth continues at its present rate, it might not be that long before everything we watch is three-dimensional. Alex Brown

Book Reviews / About the house
A Good Read March’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Standing in Another Man’s Grave – Ian Rankin Rebus is back. Since he was pensioned off in Exit Music, he has remained a constant in the thoughts of many detective fans – and, it seems, in the mind of his creator, Ian Rankin. As the book opens we find Rebus at a funeral – familiar territory. Rather than retiring quietly, he has become involved in the Cold Cases unit, in a civilian capacity. Very soon, a chance visitor to the unit sparks a trail which seems to be linked to a notat-all cold case – the disappearance of a fifteenyear-old schoolgirl as she travelled north… Once the plot line is established, it is business as usual for Rankin and Rebus. The old familiar faces are there: Siobhan Clarke, now striking out on her own, Big Ger Cafferty, still alive and kicking, and even Rankin’s more recent creation, Malcolm Fox – unsurprisingly, ‘The Complaints’ have a file three feet thick on Rebus, and his reapplication to join CID has triggered new interest. The locations may be further north than usual, with much of the novel taking place around Pitlochry and Inverness, but there are plenty of Edinburgh scenes too. Of course, Rebus works along to a soundtrack – the title itself is half taken from a Jackie Leven song, and there are musical nods ranging from The Stones to Kate Bush along the way. Rankin’s strength is in the way his novels combine the elements of a police procedural with strong, character led fiction. Details are well observed, subplots developed and resolved, and the main action rattles along toward the conclusion which, as ever, leaves more than a few loose ends. The most hopeful of these is that Rebus will be back, and as sales of the novel in the first few

How to Train Your Dragon – Cressida Cowell How to Train Your Dragon is the first book in Cressida Cowell’s phenomenally popular Viking saga, and from the first pages it is easy to see how she has attracted legions of fans. Here we meet for the first time Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third who, as everyone knows (because it’s explained in the introduction), was the greatest Viking hero that ever lived. However, as the book begins he is, quite frankly, hopeless. As he embarks on the Dragon Initiation Programme in order to become a full member of the tribe of the Hairy Hooligans, he knows he is doomed to fail – and, when your father is Chief of the tribe, what could be worse? Well, catching a toothless dragon, for one thing. Finding out that said dragon is also spectacularly disobedient is another. And, just as Hiccup thinks that rock bottom has truly been reached, a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus rolls up on the beach. If it gets its way, there won’t be a tribe to be initiated into any more, and only Hiccup can deal with this – because he alone of all the tribe can talk to dragons. Hiccup is a character both enduring and endearing, and Toothless the dragon is one of the great non-human characters in recent children’s literature. The book rolls along at a cracking pace, with illustrations and side notes from Cowell which bring the Isle of Berk and its inhabitants to life. The book starts with a map – a surefire sign that the world within is fully realised and developed and if you are a seven-year-old boy, what more could you want? A sequel? Don’t worry, there are plenty.

Billingshurst’s Heritage A Short History of a West Sussex Village by Geoffrey Lawes
B
illingshurst resident and prolific author Geoffrey Lawes’ latest offering, Billingshurst’s Heritage, A Short History of a West Sussex Village, presents a fascinating history of the people who have lived in our village from Palaeolithic times to the present day. Focusing on significant buildings in East Street such as St Mary’s Church, the Old Workhouse, Gore Farm, Brick House, Gratwicke (lovely name!) and Hammonds Farm, the book extends to the whole village and further afield, including Adversane and Five Oaks. Explored are Billingshurst’s historical statistics (in 1327 there were just 41 taxpayers in the village!), physical geography, parish and public amenities, leisure pursuits, schools (Lawes was for 17 years Headmaster of the Weald School), parish government, farming, religion, the coming of the Industrial Revolution, the railway and, more recently, the two World Wars and the impact of the horseless carriage.
No history of a village would be complete without its people and Billingshurst’s Heritage is no exception. Included here are names, facts and anecdotes of local shopkeepers, farmers and celebrities. Not just extremely knowledgeable on the subject, Lawes’ love of the village is infectious – it comes as no surprise to learn he is a former County and District Counsellor for the Billingshurst Ward. Although you can enjoy dipping into the plethora of nostalgic photographs within, Billingshurst’s Heritage should not be confused with the ubiquitous ‘Then and Now’ photobooks. Despite the huge amount of information, the book reads well and is absorbing even if, like myself, you are a relative newcomer to the village. Although, in the historical context of this book, that description perhaps applies to all of us… Grahame Pearson 170 pages, over 120 illustrations. £12. Tuition / About the house
Dance Bursaries for Boys aged 6-16 years
I
am a teacher of Classical and Regional Spanish Dance and Flamenco who has taught at various venues in Sussex for two decades yet there have never been enough boys joining in the dance classes, a situation that persists in all dance forms. Now, due to the generosity of Chichester artist Pam Dickson, I am able to offer 1 year bursaries of entirely free tuition for boys aged 6-16 years of age in the following locations, Eastbourne, Lewes, Brighton, Worthing and Chichester. There is a terrific shortage of male dancers nationally and employment opportunities are very good for anyone prepared to spend the time learning their art. I teach regular classes as above but I also teach workshops in Spain, lecture on the origins of Flamenco and tour the UK and Europe with my highly regarded Flamenco dance company Cancion Gitana.
Do you teach violin, drums, guitar, piano, flute, etc? An ad in Village Tweet reaches over 8,000 budding musicians! Call: 07762 767084 or email: editor@villagetweet.co.uk
I was formerly Flamenco teacher in residence at London’s Sadlers Wells during their annual Flamenco Festival. For boys 6-16 years of age I will soon be offering 1 year of free classes as the first rung on the ladder to a professional dance career within a recognised syllabus structure. Pam Dickson, a professional artist and former pupil of mine, has generously provided funding for the scheme by painting a set of eight greetings cards and donating all rights in the cards to the scheme, a very generous gift; the cards will soon be appearing in selected shops in Sussex. All profits from the sale of the cards will go to support the scheme. Helena Benge IDB, Principal, Helena’s Spanish and Flamenco Dance School www.duendeflamenco.co.uk Tel: 07963 959262. Introducing your local fire-fighters
T
he role of a Retained Fire-fighter involves a high level of commitment and personal discipline. Retained Fire-fighters are extremely important, highly trained and professional personnel. You must be able to work as a member of a team and be willing to work hard which includes studying. 14 of the County’s (West Sussex) 25 fire stations are entirely crewed by Retained Fire-fighters. Personnel on station have primary jobs which tend to be their fulltime employment with the Retained Firefighter as a secondary job. There are different types of cover; some people respond to fire calls during the working day and evening while others respond during evening and weekends when they are back home from their full-time jobs. A Close Shave Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …
‘I
’m never going there again,’ declared Jeremy Oakhatch to his partner Jemma. He was wet and frightened and his little whiskers were still quivering, as they snuggled down in their cosy nest. And it was a cosy nest, built between the insulation and roof of Bill’s stable. Jemma had discovered the space and persuaded Jeremy to leave the oak tree and make their home in the stable. It was dry, warm and had lots of room for when ‘Run, Jeremey, run!’ they had little ones. AND next door there was bags and bags of pig food and chicken food! They wouldn’t have to forage far to feed everyone. ‘Whatever happened, Jeremy?’ asked Jemma solicitously. ‘Well’, replied Jeremy, his voice still shaking a little despite the warmth seeping into his bones and the delicious taste of chewed cobnuts in his mouth, ‘I was out foraging as you know, ’cause you were over in the field, and I was over by the bird feeders. I had a good look around and picked up some tasty bits and pieces, but the best treats of course are in those hard to get at feeders. Squirrel-proof, I understand.’ ‘Mmmmm’ murmured Jemma encouragingly. Jeremy continued, his voice growing stronger and more indignant. ‘I looked at the tall pole thingy that had non-squirrel-proof feeders on it, and thought to myself they’d be easy to get at if I could jump up there. It would have to be a big jump but I was pretty sure I could do it. I looked around carefully as that orange cat makes my life a misery if he is about, but this time he was nowhere to be seen. I gave it a go. I leapt with all my might and, as I grabbed the pole, I slid down as I had nothing to grip. But I had another go. It was a leap of great beauty let me tell you, and I was quick enough to grab a water tray and hoist myself up and then onto a lovely tray of goodies. I was so proud of myself, and started to eat. ‘I’d barely had a mouthful when suddenly the door of the house was opened and I was really startled. I quickly jumped down ready to take flight when out of the house this little dog came flying after me. Did I ever have to run! Round the
28
garage, across the garden, through the pig pen and goat yard and up onto our roof here. Oh my, was I scared. That little dog can sure run fast’. By now Jeremy had stopped shaking and had started to munch seriously on some cob nuts they had saved. ‘Never mind, love’ said Jemma. ‘I think his name is Magnus, and he is a little pest. We’ll just have to watch out for him as well as that pesky cat, James Edward. Still, we won’t starve will we?’. She thought comfortably about the food store in the next stable. She was very happy they had come to live at the little farm near Billingshurst, despite Magnus and James Edward. And so was Jeremy who was now fast asleep. Yvonne Fleece

Equine
Sweet itch – be ready and beat it!
I
t may seem silly to talk about an essentially summer condition now but the best way to give a sweet itch sufferer a good summer is to start prevention now. In milder climates such as the south of England midges can still be active during the winter months so getting together a prevention and treatment plan now is the best thing to prevent this debilitating condition from ruining both you and your equine friend’s summer. Sweet itch is caused by an allergic reaction to the bite and saliva of the culicoides midge. Symptoms include severe itching of the mane and tail, hair loss and broken skin caused by the horse rubbing on trees, fencing, inside of stables etc, swishing of the tail and in some severe cases rolling on the ground excessively to relieve the itching. The condition can become very serious with infection setting in if sores and lesions are left untreated. Sweet itch affects not only the mane and tail but often the horse or pony’s belly, sheath or udder. As well as the insides of the hind legs, some animals also get affected on their face and behind the ears. The sweet itch season is traditionally April to October, but with climate change many vets are advocating being vigilant all year round and using rugs and topical treatments as necessary and starting more aggressive prevention plans during February and continuing well into November. At the moment there is no cure for sweet itch so prevention is paramount. As sweet itch is caused by the culicoides midge it makes sense to try to keep the horse away from midge infested areas; midges are most active during dawn and dusk and are particularly fond of areas with tree cover and standing water as they love a damp, humid environment. It is the female midge that causes the problems as she needs to feed on blood for her eggs to mature. I have known some horses improve dramatically once moved from a midge infested area to a breezy open hilltop location. Avoid using fields with ponds or other still water sources and make sure water troughs are kept scrupulously clean to keep midge numbers as low as possible. Use a sweet itch blanket – there are many of
30
these on the market to suit all budgets. Make sure the rug is a suitable material; the mesh of some fly rugs is large enough to allow midges through so make sure the one you buy is suitable for the prevention of sweet itch, the best I have come across are the Snuggy sweet itch rugs and the Boett blankets, both of which cover the belly and well as having a hood to protect the face and ears. Keeping the horse or pony clean is essential, washing the mane or tail in a mild shampoo – I recommend barrier antiitch shampoo several times a week to keep the hair free from scurf and debris, and the horse nice and comfortable under the rug. Topical solutions and creams can also be very useful, especially if the horse has already been bitten. Midges dislike landing on oily solutions so applying these two or three times a day can really help the horse stay midge free and comfortable. The downside to these is they can be very messy to apply and can work out expensive if you are having to cover large areas of skin. In mild cases of sweet itch the horse can be stabled during the parts of the day when the midges are most active – at dawn and dusk – but beware of doing this with a serious case as the horse will go frantic scratching on every available surface and cause considerable damage to himself and the building. There are now treatments you can get from your vet which have been shown to have promising results too. It is well worth having a chat with your vet if you are struggling to control the condition. With forethought towards prevention of ry midges gaining access to sensitive horses le d and ponies this summer will hopefully d y, sa ha be warm, enjoyable and trouble free! , k ly ge Jeannette Douglas. Exciting changes in store at Fishers this spring!
H
ave you heard? Fishers Adventure Farm Park in West Sussex will be unveiling a BRAND NEW ANIMAL BARN this spring! Having been among the top farm parks in the UK for more than 20 years, Fishers are striding out again in 2013 to live up to their most popular customer comment… ‘There’s always something new!’ The Fishers Team has worked alongside other farm parks to adapt to a new ‘industry code of practice’, approved by the HSE, to ensure that all farm attractions maintain the highest level of hygiene. The intention is that visitors all over the country may still enjoy a fun, yet safe experience with animals, and Fishers are intending to be fully compliant with this vital step forward. The new Animal Encounter Barn has been specifically designed to display the animals to their best advantage incorporating the fantastic new demonstration area, where children are encouraged to participate in the many and varied shows and animal handling sessions that will take
place throughout the day. Fishers are passionate about children interacting with animals in a safe environment and they hope that the new barn will underline their commitment to animal health and family safety. As with all projects at Fishers, you may be surprised to know that the project is being designed and built by the staff! Schools and nurseries will benefit from the new additions too, as there will be educational ‘interactive areas’, ‘museums’, as well as the aforementioned variety of animals to see and enjoy! But… they’re not going to leave it there! No, Fishers are also planning a NEW INDOOR SOFT-PLAY AREA, SUMMER SUN-DECK, REFURBISHED COFFEE LOUNGES and lots more for 2013. I know where I’m going…! Wriggle wriggle
A
new dance craze perhaps? Well maybe… if you’re a worm that is! In my opinion, worms have to be the unsung heroes of the garden. They only eat what I don’t want, they tidy up leaves from the borders by dragging them down into the soil, and who else improves our soil structure by adding air holes, incorporating organic matter en route and even provides food for the birds (sorry, worms!), and all for free? As far as I’m aware, garden worms don’t have their own ‘Worm awareness week’, they just carry on doing what they do best, quietly making beautifully rich, dark brown garden goodness. You may be happy to leave the worms well alone, merrily munching away in the compost heap, but why not have a go at making your own worm villa (known as a wormery), or buying a pre-made version online? Most kids love worms so it’s a great activity to do as a family, or indeed if you enjoy the idea of reducing landfill and nourishing your garden at the same time. Worms will happily nosh through your kitchen waste. They’re not that fussy but they don’t like acidic things such as citrus peels, garlic and onion, but things they do love (strangely) are teabags, eggshell and cold mashed potato. (I’ve heard that for worms these foods are like us eating oysters – they, erm, put them in the mood for a little wriggle wriggle!) That said, worms never over populate and are able to regulate their breeding actively in line with their environment. Bizarrely, they can also change
gender to suit the local talent on offer! Worms don’t like extremes in temperature, so I’d advise keeping them in a shaded corner which does not get too hot or cold. Their home can be insulated in winter, or moved into the garage or shed. The resulting compost is rich and when scattered into the borders makes a highly concentrated soil improver, as does the liquid ‘wee tea’ which can be accessed via the tap at the base of the wormery. Diluted 1:10 with water it makes a great natural liquid plant food too. Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Jobs to do this month to keep you warm: Protecting early spring growth from pesky slugs. (Try a midnight slug hunt!) Hoe off any newly germinating weed seedlings on a dry day. Cut back shrubs such as Cornus (dogwood) and Buddleia. Herbaceous perennials such as Hostas which are just beginning to re-grow can be dug up and chopped into 2 or 4 pieces and replanted to make more. Begin feeding fish. Don’t forget to provide food for the worms – add a 5cm layer of compost to the top of the soil and let the worms pull it in.

Puppy parent volunteers needed urgently
N
ational charity, Canine Partners, urgently needs volunteers to become puppy parents in West Sussex to ensure that they can continue to train assistance dogs in the county. This vital role allows Canine Partners to team a specially trained assistance dog with a person with disabilities. The Charity is specifically looking for volunteers who can take a puppy into their home from the age of eight weeks until they are 12-14 months old. They will need to be available to attend regular puppy training classes at the training centre in Heyshott, near Midhurst, and to teach the pup basic obedience and core tasks that will be vital as they move on to advanced training. Cowplain puppy parent Glenis Lawrenson has been a volunteer for the charity for seven years, has cared for five puppies and has also offered her home to foster other pups. Glenis said, “I decided to become a puppy parent when I heard about the fantastic work of Canine Partners and my social conscience kicked in – I felt I could do something which would benefit other people. “Being a puppy parent brings out every emotion there is. There is always a lot of laughter when there is a puppy about. And when you see that dog changing the life of a person with disabilities and knowing you
have played a part in it, you feel proud enough to burst!” Puppy parents will have the full support of Canine Partners’ puppy trainer, Elaine Potter, at the national centre near Midhurst. And all expenses relating to the pup’s training will be met by the Charity. Elaine added, “Our puppies begin their training as soon as they are placed with their puppy parent. The puppies need a welcoming and understanding home to live in while they learn the skills that they need to become an assistance dog. The emphasis at puppy class is on having fun as you teach your puppy basic obedience. You will be guided on how to socialise your puppy to the many different environments that an assistance dog will have to cope with. If you are at home most of the day, have commitment and a sense of humour, and would like to play a part in training a puppy to help a person with a disability, then why not become a puppy parent.” For further information about becoming a puppy parent please contact Elaine Potter on (01730) 716036 or email elainep@caninepartners.org.uk. Accidents will happen John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
T
hey say that farming is one of the most dangerous occupations and that farmyards are places where hazards and injury lurk round every piece of rusting machinery. I guess that this is quite correct… Over my lifetime of farming I have had the good fortune to survive in relatively good nick from many a mishap that could, or should, have caused me to shuffle off this mortal coil. I think, though, that most of us can look back and reflect that if this or that event had happened just a few minutes earlier or even seconds later… we would not be here. That dreaded duo ‘Health and Safety’ have indeed played their part in making the farmyard and its surroundings a great deal less risky and we should not try to minimise the effects that recent years of rules and regulations have played in keeping us from early ‘retirement’. Even so, I can recall some of the things that I have myself suffered that should, or at least could, have been the end of my role in countryside pursuits. I shall ignore many of the obvious ones like falling off ladders. Any fruit picker of old will have suffered this fate as we always declared that you were not qualified for the job until you had descended under full gravitational pull at least once during each season. Or, indeed, the horse riding ‘event’ that I spoke of in an earlier missive, when one these beautiful beasts did her best to damage me beyond repair… or at least stop me from procreating my line further! I refer much more to obeying rules like, ‘The man who stacks the rick-cart rides it home’. The poor devil stacking the stooks of corn, later the bales of straw and hay, onto the cart out in the field, had then to remain perched on the top of the swaying monstrosity as it lurched all the way back to the barn. Most times it was ok but occasionally it wasn’t. The fall was bad enough; the ton or so of falling bales on top of you afterwards was less pleasant. Still, I cannot recall any fatalities – but my memory is not as good as it once was! I did once get stuck up a ladder with my chainsaw embedded in my shoulder – the result of a nasty kick-
back from the saw as I pruned a tall Bramley. That did smart. We had no car so my Dee stuck me up with plaster and bandages and made me stay indoors for the day. (We wuz tough in those days.) Then there was the time a couple of us were loading a trailer with aluminium pipes for irrigating the orchards. They were extremely light for their huge length and I set to swinging them over my head onto the trailer’s floor. The crack and sparks of molten metal that fell from above then informed me of the whereabouts of the electrical cables that crossed the yard. My friend and I fell about laughing. Then we learnt later that of the few who had also done similar – none had survived. We were duly chastened and I thanked the good Lord and my wellies’ insolation for the chance to reflect on my stupidity. I think that things like hit fingers and squashed toes do not count in the grand manner of working injuries. Most farm workers will have a multitude of dents, lumps and scars where animals have bitten, kicked or trod on them and machines have shown no respect for their operator and have retaliated for years of neglect. For, it has to be admitted, farmers do have a reputation for neglecting their equipment… A machine was used and then spent the next ten months cultivating the bed of nettles that grew around it. The farmer then pulled it out of its slumber in the hedge, kicked the tyres to make sure that they still had some air in them, and then expected the poor ageing hulk of rust to perform. Well, at least that once was the case. Now with the huge cost of some of these monsters, he looks after them better than his family. (Ask any farmer’s wife if you don’t believe me.) So, I have been fortunate. I’ve fallen through the glasshouse roof and not been cut (too much). The vent motor that fell from its position up in the rafters and just grazed my nose was looked on as ‘lucky’. I have felt the force of the National Grid on several occasions and have found that sharp blades and my delicate skin invariably don’t get on. But I have survived. Like so many, I have met the force that we know as ‘bad luck’, which is so often a euphemism for carelessness, and with a little patching up have moved on to the next event. Many a time I have been accused of being a ‘walking disaster’. I refute this. I think I’ve just been a very lucky old bugger. John Nash

Living with Laika – off to training!
T
raining and puppy socialisation classes are part and parcel of dog ownership after buying the ‘poop bags’, collar, lead, identity tag, bed, feeding/drinking bowls, grooming brushes, microchip implant and of course, pet insurance – I nearly forgot the food and the vaccinations! Laika was ready for some instruction in order to become a fit and proper member of society. The younger the better I was led to believe, after all there’s the Jesuit maxim of “Give me a child for his first seven years and I’ll give you the man”. It shouldn’t be any different for a dog and I had the immortal words of Barbara Woodhouse to support my own need for an education, “There’s no such thing as a difficult dog, only an inexperienced owner.” Up until this time, my experience of dog ownership had consisted of allowing large numbers of semi-wild hounds including a Rhodesian Ridgeback, a German Shepherd and a Great Dane (sounds like a UN Peacekeeping Force) romp across our eleven-acre smallholding in Zambia in the guise of guard dogs – they didn’t prevent armed bandits from invading our home and cleaning us out! Adorned with a slip lead, Laika attended her first training class where the beginners were soon informed that a choke chain was required. Walking to heel would clearly be the first step along with recall and using the
choke chain; Laika would learn that as she pulled forward, I would stop and jerk the lead, causing her to desist from pulling. I would then slacken the lead so that the choke chain hung loosely on her neck. She was supposed to realise that every time she pulled forward, the choke chain would give a painful jerk to her neck and throat. Laika proved impervious to such instruction at two separate training classes. The weekly training session for Laika became a time of ritual humiliation for me as she became ‘Anouk of the North’ intent upon ensuring that we reached the end of the barn and back before anyone else! How I wished that we could proceed at a stately pace affording a sharp 360° rotation at the end and almost a saunter to the final turn and “Sit”. Suffering from an acute bout of ‘Choke-Chain Wrist Snap’, I would watch as proud owners positively beamed as they marched with military precision, dogs almost welded to their left legs. Most memorable was a performance exhibited by a charming lady with three golden retrievers who embarked on an exhibition worthy of gold medalist synchronized swimmers – a perfect combination of timing, body configuration and body position at the finish! I almost broke into applause and I’m sure I saw one of the retrievers smirk! Ron Myal

Windows 8 Tips (Part 1) More sound computer and IT advice from Simon Thomas
W
ith Windows 8 now being installed on new PCs the following are some tips for new users on Windows 8. One of the first things any new Windows 8 user should do is set up automatic updates. Type action anywhere on the Start screen. The search bar will pop up on the right-hand side of the screen and give you a search box to complete the text if needed. You then need to click where it says Settings in the Search bar and select the Action Center icon that appears on the left of the main screen. The Action Center will open in a window on the traditional desktop. Click the Security link to reveal your current settings and check that Windows Update is set to On. Now select Control Panel Home from the left-hand side and click Systems and Security, then Windows Updates. From the left-hand task pane you can check for updates manually, view your update history and change settings, such as the time Windows automatically checks for updates. If you are going to allow your children to use the computer then setting up some parental controls is straightforward. Back in the Start screen again, type parental, then select Settings in the Search bar on the right. Click or tap on ‘Set up Family Safety for any user’. Windows will switch back to
the desktop and open the Family Safety screen. Click on ‘Create a new user account’. You will have to fill in a few screens, which ask for information about the new user including their name and email address. Once the new user has been added you can set parameters, such as limiting time on the internet, website blocking, limiting games and stopping them from downloading apps. You can also view activity reports. Windows 8 carries out security scans automatically during its scheduled maintenance period, which, by default, is set to occur every day at 3am (i.e. when the PC is unlikely to be in use) and also includes other activities, such as checking for new updates. If your computer is in standby mode at this time, Windows will wake it to carry out the tasks but, if you prefer, you can change the time that Microsoft has set. To do this type action in the Start screen, then select Settings from the Search bar. Click on Action Center icon on the Start screen. Then choose Maintenance and click on the ‘change maintenance settings’ link. This will allow you to specify the time scans are run. You can also disable the box that automatically wakes up the PC if you wish. Simon Thomas (techgeek@tech-geek.co.uk)

Friday the 5th of April Fake Thackray During the late ’60s and early ‘70s, Jake Thackray’s satirical, witty, sentimental and hilarious songs brought him fame and extensive television exposure as well as a string of top selling LPs. He was a uniquely gifted songwriter that brought comparisons with Flanders & Swann and even the billing of the ‘North Country Noel Coward’. Songs such as ‘Bantam Cock’, ‘Sister Josephine’, ‘The Blacksmith and the Toffee Maker’ and ‘The Ballad of Billy Kershaw’ illustrated what a true craftsman of the English language he was. Dying tragically in 2002, his legacy of songs continues to delight audiences of all ages today. John Watterson’s tribute to Jake is full of the warmth, humour and sincerity that you would expect from a lifelong fan. Fake Thakray is supporting Fairport Convention on their 28-date tour of the UK in the first 3 months of 2013, and is then performing several dozen solo dates, one of the first of which will be in Billingshurst.
