Vegetable Chowder

This is an American recipe. In the US they use cups for measuring. It’s quite a liberating way to cook. If you don’t have a proper set of measuring cups simply use any large cup or mug.

Preparation time: 30 minutes. Cooking time: 25 minutes. Serves 2 (approx)

METHOD

1. Sauté the peppers and onions in butter until tender. 2. Add remaining vegetables, stock, salt and black pepper; bring to a boil. 3. Reduce heat: simmer covered for 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. 4. Combine flour and milk until smooth; stir into pan. 5. Bring soup to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Mix in the parsley. Just before serving, stir in the cheese until melted.

INGREDIENTS ½ cup chopped red or green pepper ½ cup chopped onions ¼ cup butter or margarine 1 cup chopped celery 1 cup diced cauliflower 1 cup diced carrot 1 cup diced broccoli 3 cups fresh chicken stock Salt to taste Ground black pepper to taste ½ cup plain flour 1-2 cups milk 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 3 cups grated cheddar cheese

We’ve been loafing around all year!

W

ow! What a year it’s been at Jengers Craft Bakery. (And of course, we have not been loafing around, not even for a minute, but we couldn’t resist the cliché!) We’ve been busy earning a crust, but what an enjoyable and rewarding way to do it! So much has filled our first year… we took part in National Doughnut Week, attended the Billingshurst Show, participated in Horsham’s Food & Drink Festival, and (at the risk of using another cliché) the icing on the cake was being nominated for a Sussex Food & Drink award! Our range of services has gradually expanded over the last year; we now supply a wide range of wholesale customers including golf clubs, community shops not forgetting a vast number of local pubs. And although we are proud of our range of services and deliveries to local – and some not so local – businesses and functions, we never lose sight of our service to our local customers at our community bakery in Jengers Mead which

continues to go from strength to strength. Much of the morning is spent selling our freshly baked beautiful tasty loaves – you could say this aspect of the business is our bread and butter! Come lunchtime, we serve delicious filled rolls made by our lovely Kathy. Many of our customers delight in trying as many of our different loaves as possible; we certainly offer plenty of variety. If you have a favourite loaf don’t be afraid to call us up early in the morning and ask us to put one aside to avoid disappointment. We would like to thank all our local and wholesale customers for their continued support over the past year and look forward to serving them in the future! We would also like to thank our team for their ongoing hard work and dedication. A warm thank you to Darren, Alan, Claire, Kay, Neil, Kathy, Jodie, David, Slawek and Joanna. Mark and Helen Sheath

All our products are freshly baked on the premises in Jengers Mead. You will always find freshly baked crusty breads, rolls and speciality loaves including Sussex Nutty. Our range of doughnuts, buns and cakes are worth travelling for. Come to Jengers Craft Bakery for good old fashioned service with a smile. We are proud members of the Craft Bakers Association, and Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce. Unwind and Relax – go fishing in your local lakes & river

B

illingshurst Angling Society is a thriving club that offers good fishing in pleasant surroundings not too far from the village. We have over six miles of the river Arun running down from Oakhurst to Newbridge then on through the flood meadows to Lordings Lock and to Lee Place. Throughout the whole stretch the river continually changes its character from slow moving deep and wide glides to fast rushing, reed lined, almost turbulent water. The river holds a good stock of coarse fish, despite the high water levels that are quite common during the winter months. We also control the fishing on the disused section of the Wey and Arun Canal running north of Newbridge up to Rowner Mill. For the anglers that prefer still waters we have access to several lakes including our own at Shillinglee. We have also been given access to three lakes near Loxwood. They are way out in the countryside, but quite easy to get to and once there, you feel as if you are miles from anywhere. The lakes are located in a peaceful part of the countryside with only the twitter of the birds to disturb the sheer pleasure of being there. They are

well stocked with a wide variety of fish. For the pleasure fisherman there is little to beat this location. We control the small lake in Jubilee Fields. Apart from being extremely handy for a short trip out, this is where we hold a series of teach-ins during the warmer months to introduce young and novice anglers to fishing. The lake is teaming with fish and catching them is almost guaranteed. All these venues offer a wide variety of angling whether you are after a specimen, which our waters hold many of, or just to while away a few hours beside the water catching whatever comes your way. Our membership runs from April through to March and is available to anyone. There are concessions for pensioners, students and families. Exciting season ahead for Billingshurst Cricket Club

F

ollowing promotion from the third division of Sussex league cricket in 2013 the Billingshurst 1st XI squad began 2014 with the aim of consolidating their place in the higher division. Led by captain Ben Williams, and welcoming two newcomers to the squad, hopes were high that a mid-table finish could be achieved. The first fixture did not go well. On a soggy May afternoon at St James CC Billingshurst were skittled out for just over 60. It did not take long for defeat to be confirmed and there was a sense among the players that survival in the new league might be hard work. That first game proved to be the low point. Billingshurst would lose only three more games. Slowly moving up the table, by half way through the season the team were in second place, a position that would give them promotion to the top tier of Sussex cricket. Despite the close attentions of strong Worthing and St James’ XIs, second position was retained and, for the first time in the club’s history, 2015 will see County Premier League cricket in Billingshurst. There were many strong performers throughout the season but two major factors in the team’s success were the strong team spirit and the knack of each of the squad’s 15 players to contribute at significant points throughout the summer.

To finish off another successful season the club welcomed Sussex CCC testimonial beneficiary Michael Yardy to Jubilee Fields for a 25 over match at the end of August. Sussex claimed victory in a close match, which in good weather, brought hundreds of spectators to Jubilee Fields to enjoy a day focused on families, children’s participation in cricket and raising money for Michael, his two charities and the club. Billingshurst have again secured a testimonial match for a Sussex and England star for the 2015 season! 12th July is the date for your diaries. Village Tweet will publish more information in a summer edition. The highest level of amateur cricket will be played in the village this season. With this comes a requirement from the Sussex County League to improve facilities. The club are looking for potential sponsors among local businesses and organisations to become part of this successful journey. If interested please contact jonalexander@btinternet.com Potential players and members should contact Chris Shambrook on (01403) 782072 or visit the website at www.play-cricket/billingshurstcc.com. Delphi and the Glass Slippers – Darcey Bussell For most young readers, Darcey Bussell will be familiar through the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. What they may not be aware of is her career with the Royal Ballet, and she has poured this love and knowledge of ballet into her series of books for young ballet obsessed girls. The Magic Ballerina books follow the adventures of Delphie, a young girl who attends a ballet school. She is given a pair of red ballet shoes which turn out to be magical, and are able to whisk her away to the land of Enchantia where characters from famous ballets live. In Delphie and the Glass Slippers Delphie has to help Cinderella. Something strange is happening and, as the clock chimes seven o’clock, time jumps and she never gets to attend the ball. Along the way, Delphie also encounters a mysterious cloaked figure who tries to keep the Prince from finding Cinderella. Guaranteed to delight any budding ballerina, this book is exciting and full of little glimpses into the world of ballet and dancing.

The Secret of Crickley Hall – James Herbert At over 600 pages, this novel from the master of horror does not disappoint as the pages fly by. Gabe and Eve Caleigh have moved with their two daughters from their London home to the West Country to escape the memories of their fiveyear-old son who disappeared without trace from a playground a year ago. Their new home is Crickley Hall, a large house with a checkered past, but it has been empty for many years. It seemed a bargain price… As they settle into the community they learn more about the village, and Crickley Hall. Tragedy occurred during the Great Flood of 1943, when the hall was being used to house orphans evacuated from London due to the Blitz. The children and their guardians all perished in the flood, and it would appear that the young victims are not content to remain quiet. Soon Eve starts seeing her missing son and, like an unstoppable wall of water, the horrors that lie lurking in Crickley Hall flood to the surface, and Gabe must fight to save his family as the truth of that night in 1943 emerges:

The adaptable accommodation is ideal for home makers & downsizers alike, offering a large kitchen/ breakfast room which is open plan to a dining room. Diary of a ‘Commuter’ Smallholder The continuing diary of Michaela Giles, a Billingshurst smallholder

oah the Boer goat buck is well and truly in my bad books. How shall I word this delicately… now all the ladies don’t need him anymore, he has turned into a giant ball of energy and at feed time is positively manic and started headbutting all the heavily pregnant ladies very hard into a wall. So, yet again I have dug out the warmest rug for my Trakehner and both he and the pony have been turned out so that I have a free stable for Noah and his now fully weaned son Alan. Alan is most unhappy with this arrangement but his mother seems quite happy, so this is how it must stay until I can get them all outside again. I like the idea that the goats can Naughty Noah at least look out of the doorway during the day for added interest, however I have had to use a solid door for the boys as Alan can climb like a… goat! I have six of my seven Boer ladies due and am hoping for some nicely marked female kids –

keep your fingers crossed for me. We have had three Saddleback litters born and so far can fulfil all the specific sex orders from customers. Last year I sold too many and it was touch and go whether it was worth turning the freezer off for a while; so this year I have written our name next to a few in the order book! The sheep are getting rounder so our new ram Brock has been a sound purchase. It’s easy to check everything is in the right place when buying animals but unless you have expensive tests done its always touch and go that it is all working correctly. Our lemon pyle Brahmas have also started laying again but as hubby has stolen the plugs of both incubators we are in effect currently eating eggs worth £2 each until I remember to buy some more! I can now feel spring coming – can’t wait. Michaela Giles www.tedfoldcottagefarm.co.uk

Garden View

The greenhouse guide

P

eople often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” My reply is always, “My greenhouse.” A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year. With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection. Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to. Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot – you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one (my first one had a base of just 4' by 5'5") it will still be a worthwhile investment. The aluminium-framed types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Wooden-framed constructions are more attractive though, and often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well. Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when

necessary. Apart from heat the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a pre-designated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch. Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants. Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials. Rachel Leverton Great Greenhouse Tips l Fit your greenhouse to level foundations. l Orientation isn’t important, but make sure it isn’t in the shadow of the house, or overhanging trees. l Ventilate well. l Any electrical work must be carried out or certified by a qualified electrician to comply with Part P of the building regulations. l Don’t be tempted to use a household electric heater. It won’t cope with the damp conditions in a greenhouse. l Fit a water butt to the downpipes at either end of the greenhouse to conserve water.

Garden Tweet!

Give garden birds a tweet this winter with Austen’s Home Hardware, Billingshurst

F

eeding garden birds is a popular activity. According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) over half the adult population of the UK feed birds in their garden. As winter takes grip putting out food and water on a regular basis makes a huge difference to bird populations regardless of whether you live in town or countryside. But choosing the right food and providing a safe feeding environment is also vital to their welfare and safety. At Austen’s Home Hardware Billingshurst we have a selection of bird feeders and recommended wild bird foods that will encourage garden visitors and provide the essential proteins and nutrients they require to survive the harshest of winters. As birds can be quite fussy, they will be attracted to better quality products, so to maximize the number, and the species of visitors, we suggest our own brand. In fact, our own brand, Home Birdcare is specially formulated using the very best ingredients and only available from Home Hardware. Of course, we do sell other brands too. Most of us have somewhere in our garden for a bird table or feeding station. Importantly, it needs to provide a safe haven for the birds and be of a design that will deter scavengers such as squirrels from easy pickings. It should also be sited well away from garden wall and fences, and even overhanging trees from

which the local cats might spring a surprise attack! It is important to know that some seemingly innocuous foods can actually be harmful to birds so it is always advisable to buy wild bird food that has been specially formulated. Fat balls and other fatbased food bars are excellent winter food. Peanuts are rich in fat and are popular with many species including tits, greenfinches, house sparrows, nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers and siskins. But they can be high in a natural toxin, which can kill birds, so only ever buy them from a reputable dealer. It is important to regularly clean bird tables and feeders. Mouldy food can cause respiratory infections in birds, while stale food provides a breeding ground for salmonella bacteria, which can cause food poisoning in birds, animals and humans. So never put out too much food. Finally, birds will welcome fresh water at any time of year, so put out a shallow bowl of water on your bird table and remember to replenish it daily, also checking it doesn’t freeze solid in winter. So, as we head into mid-winter, why not fly down to Austen’s Home Hardware for friendly advice and to see our range of bird feeders, wild bird food and accessories that will encourage new life and colour to your garden. Billingshurst Primary School pupils revive a dying art

Y

ear four pupils at Billingshurst Primary School have been working with their very own sewing celebrity Lynda Lewis from BBC2’s The Great British Sewing Bee 2014 to revive the art of quilting. With a history dating back to the 12th Century when the Crusaders introduced quilting to Europe, the craft was particularly popular in Victorian England when quilts were frequently given as commemorative gifts to be handed down from generation to generation. Once considered an important and large part of a family’s life due to the time and effort involved in creating a quilt, many consider it a dying art in our modern and hectic times. As part of the year group’s term project called ‘Under the Sea’, Lynda Lewis came up with the idea of combining painting and sewing to enable each pupil to design and create a unique sample that could be used to embellish the quilt. Each child was given a piece of fabric which they painted, using Brusho fabric paint, before sewing their designs on. Mrs Lewis over-locked the edges of the fabric and the children stitched their designs in place, adding

beads, buttons and sequins to finish them off. The finished quilt contains 90 different pieces of work, of varying sizes, representing over 100 hours of work by staff and pupils making this work of art both unique and treasured by everyone involved. Quilting offered an ideal opportunity to effectively display the new skills the pupils have acquired. Lynda Lewis commented, “I’m always looking for an excuse to get children sewing, and everyone seemed so enthusiastic. When I was at school, sewing and knitting were part of the curriculum and I feel that children don’t always have enough access to these basic skills within this computer generation. Aside from the benefits of improved fine motor skills, I believe that sewing and knitting are almost meditative and have a positive impact on children’s emotional wellbeing. The children were delighted with the result. It was lovely to see the look of pride and delight on their faces as they found and pointed out their own contribution.” Kate Clifford on behalf of the BPSCA

Worm Warfare

W

ith spring fast approaching many owners are thinking about turning horses out for longer grazing periods; this is a good time of year to make sure you have a good and sustainable parasite control programme in place. Basing your worming programme on testing and strategic dosing not only saves you money but saves your horse from having unnecessary chemical treatments and most importantly of all will help prevent the onset of resistance. Resistance occurs when a population of worms is exposed to a sub-lethal dose of wormer, some worms will survive the treatment and will reproduce until the resistant worms over populate the non resistant ones and the wormer used become ineffective. Anthelmintic Resistance, as it is known, is a huge problem in the sheep industry and is becoming widespread at an alarming rate among the horse population too. Owners must adopt sensible worming strategies to help prevent the onset of resistance and the implications that it would bring. Many worming programmes are outdated by some 3040 years especially in the case of interval dosing, some owners will remember the time when we de wormed horses every 6-8 weeks! Thankfully science has moved on and has given us the option of a reliable means of testing horses; it is said that just 20 percent of the horse population carry 80 percent of the worm burden. The idea behind testing, known as faecal egg counts, is to identify those horses that are carrying a worm burden and treat them while leaving those who test as clean without treatment. Worm count kits can be obtained from your vet or directly from a company offering the service. Many feed stores who have an SQP (suitably qualified person) on site will also be able to offer kits and expert advice on how to use them. Getting started with testing is an easy process although when starting out you may have to test more often until you build up a picture of your horse’s health status, for instance you may get a negative test even though the horse has a large worm burden but none of those worms are shedding eggs. Test again in a few weeks and the result can reveal a very different story! Tapeworm can now be tested for by a simple saliva test conducted by the owner. The Equisal test is used to check for tapeworm antibodies in the horse’s saliva and is

so far proving popular with owners as an alternative to blood tests. Once you have your test results speak to your local SQP who will advise you on the correct course of action to take and what, if any, treatment is needed. Strategic worming is when we dose for a specific type of worm at a time of year to break its life cycle. The most important and pathogenic worm is the small red worm. This parasite burrows into the wall of the gut and can hibernate over winter, emerging in the spring in huge numbers and can make horses very ill indeed. In any worming schedule it is vitally important to treat these parasites; they cannot be detected by worm counts or blood tests so treatment with a Moxidectin-based wormer is advised. Five-day treatment with Fenbendazole used to be the standard treatment for this worm but resistance to this drug is very common. Foals and young stock are at high risk of picking up very large burdens of Ascarids (roundworms) due to their low immunity and should have appropriate treatment for these at regular intervals your vet or SQP can advise you on suitable products and course of treatment. Adult horses tend to get a good resistance to these worms and any burdens will be detected by your regular worm counts. Other ways of helping keep the horse’s parasite burden down are regular removal of droppings from the field, especially important when horses are kept in small paddocks, and cross grazing with other species such as cattle and sheep. Harrowing can be a useful tool but must be carried out in hot, dry weather to be successful in killing off worm eggs and larvae – not always possible in the UK! The conclusion of this article is that we must move away from chemical-based programmes and use the options available to us to test and only treat with chemical wormers when necessary if we are to delay the onset of resistance. Currently there are no new drugs being developed so we must keep what we have working for as long as we can. Happy horse keeping until next month. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. balancing the needs of traditional desktop users and mobile device users, with the Continuum feature, which dynamically shifts the Windows 10 interface from the modern UI to the desktop depending on whether you’re using a traditional PC or a touchscreen device. Windows 10 also looks and works a lot more like Windows 7 than it does Windows 8, and it will be a platform where traditional and modern apps co-exist happily. The Start menu makes a welcome return and is customisable. It’s resizeable, and you can select what it displays. New to Windows 10 is Spartan: a clean-looking, easy to use browser with some smart note sharing and website clipping features. But it won’t be available in the first Windows Insider builds, and it will only come to phones eventually. And why is it called 10, not 9? It seems that Microsoft wanted to make a complete break from single digits and 10 represents a big step forward for the company. Microsoft’s Terry Myerson summed it up with, “Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows.” Let’s hope that it’ll be a 10 out of 10 success and not another singular let down. indows users have become used to quite a few changes from Microsoft over the last few years, even though some of those changes were grudgingly but eventually accepted. However, it’s now widely accepted (more than likely at Microsoft HQ as well) that Windows 8 was a bit of a disaster. When they first bought it out the cry of “Where’s the Start button?” was heard across the world. It seems that in their keenness to make Windows 8 touch device friendly, they forgot about the hordes of standard desktop users they had left out in the cold. They made a few fixes but Windows 8 has not been a popular development. Drum roll please – we’d like to introduce you to Windows 10. It’s not due for release until later in 2015 but it’s the much anticipated replacement for Windows 8 and industry experts are claiming it could be the real successor to the much more successful Windows 7. If you have Windows 7 or 8/8.1 you will be able to upgrade for free in the first year but Microsoft have yet to confirm whether after that time it will be available as a one-off paid-for licence or if it will follow the likes of Outlook into the subscription payment model. Billingshurst’s Five-year Plan: 4,000 delivered by hand

T

he 2nd of February 2015 saw more than 4,000 copies of Billingshurst’s new five-year Community-led Plan hand-delivered to homes and businesses in the Parish. Another 250 have been mailed to rural areas. The Plan, Billingshurst today and tomorrow, sets out the priorities of the village for 2015-2020 and is based on detailed research among the community over the last two years. It shows how the key issues affecting Billingshurst and its surrounding areas will be addressed; by whom; with which government, County, District or other organization; and when. Drafting Team Member, Alan Grant, who also coordinated the distribution together with Team Members, Tony Burke and Martin Spurrier, said, “We have made every effort to deliver a copy directly to each household in the village and to post a copy to those further out. Horsham District Planning Framework (HDPF) The Planning Inspector has produced an Interim Report on the HDPF. His only area of major concern with the HDPF is with the proposed level of housing provision. The Inspector believes that Horsham District Council (HDC) should accommodate more new housing than in the plan and he states that he favours concentration of growth around Horsham, Southwater and Billingshurst along with some development in other villages, in accordance with Neighbourhood Plans that are currently being

options for increasing its assessed number of 650 new homes per year, to meet the Inspector’s requirement of at least 750 homes per year. HDC will begin by looking at the allocations of homes that have already been made within existing planned developments to re-assess capacity at these sites. It will then need to look at the shortfall and look at where, within the criteria laid down by the Inspector, it can find further site allocations. A report, with recommendations on where the additional new homes will be accommodated, will go to HDC on 18 March. Subject to HDC approval, consultation on the amendments to the strategy will take place between 23 March and 5 May. See HDC’s website for details on the consultation www.horsham.gov.uk
