s a life-long car enthusiast I have loved admiring the Ferraris that fill the streets of Horsham during the annual Piazza Italia festival which celebrates its tenth year this Easter weekend (see page 9). However, this year’s event has something of an early bonus for those of us who live in Billingshurst. On 13th March classic Italian cars and motorbikes will be touring the area and will park for a couple of hours in the library car-park (see page 8). Having owned a number of Alfa Romeos in the past I am particularly pleased that the event is not just for Ferraris but will include everything from original little Fiat 500s to Lamborghinis – and hopefully a few Alfas! The area’s longest-established, independent family firm

This month Fowlers are very proud to introduce you to their excellent Lettings Department. Fowlers Lettings are based on the first floor of their very busy Storrington office and this thriving department is headed by Director, Lynda Paine (pictured above). They look after properties from Storrington all the way through to Billingshurst and on to the outlying villages including Wisborough Green, Loxwood and Ifold. Lynda’s experience in the lettings field is immense. For many years she was based in the Brighton area, with her lettings clients keeping her busy along the south coast. After taking a short break Lynda joined Fowlers and has gained an excellent reputation which mirrors the ethos of this very reputable, independent family firm. Lynda commented: “I am so proud to be part of the Fowlers family, and to head the lettings department is wonderful. I would urge all those considering letting their property to contact me with any queries they may have. Letting one of your most valuable assets needs considered advice, and I pride myself on the knowledge I have gained, and will assure all tenants and landlords of accurate, honest advice”. Lynda can be contacted on 01903 745844 or email lettings@fowlersonline.co.uk

March 2016 Update

01403 780807 billingshurst@cubittandwest.co.uk

cubittandwest.co.uk

Your update to the Billingshurst housing market Last week someone asked me, “When you write those articles for the Village Tweet, Heather, do you have a theme?”

relationships are the bedrock of this business. In our sometimes cold and robotic digital age it’s those personal interactions that create the comfort, the personal relationships we build along the way that give us our foundations, that give reality a bit of warmth and colour.

I don’t know. I do know that as I wrote “I don’t know” a quote from Charles Lamb popped into my head, “it is the privilege of friendship to talk nonsense, and have her nonsense respected”. This thought throws up a number of additional thoughts. Since I started writing here I have bandied around a fair few quotes, so I suppose quotes could be a theme. I have, to date, written in the style of a Sunday Times magazine columnist, spoken about Buddha, Shakespeare and 16th Century French Philosophers in the same paragraph, and last month I believe I mentioned the Romans so maybe not nonsense as a theme but not always obvious could apply. And then, why “friendship”?

This week my foundation had a little shake actually on discovering that one of my competitors was wandering around saying that I was a “lovely person” (er, thanks) and in a few years I would be “the agent to beat” (ah, that’s nice to know) but that I was “not the right person” (ok, I’m waiting..) to sell their house because I had “not been an agent for many years” (ouch) and “certainly not an agent in this village” (double ouch and I suppose I should have seen it coming). So, in the spirit of getting to know me I’ll record here that academically I’m a lawyer - no trouble with contracts/conveyancing etc this end, I spent much of my 20 year career in the construction industry value engineering - that’s an awful lot of property knowledge and learning the hard way to become a good negotiator, plus I have a fabulous all-local team. I’m ouching not due to a little false and wounded pride, but because it was just all a bit unsavoury.

Well, I think, although I may be wrong, that the friendship connection appeared in my mind because I write this as if I actually know you. Now I certainly know some of you reading, but is this the vehicle of friendship? Probably not, but it is for me a vehicle of relationship. I may not have gotten to know you yet, but you are certainly getting to know me, and

Everything we are building in Cubitt & West, Billingshurst

is about relationships, and that for me is about respect. I want your business, I want to be the local agent people trust with possibly the biggest decision they may make this year. When I come into your home, or you come into my rather lovely branch, I’m going to use our time building a relationship that works for us and demonstrating what it is that we do. And that’s it. I’m confident that no-one can match that. I always seem to come full circle writing here - I’m fast concluding “Romans, ancient philosophy, literary heritage” is all traditional stuff - so if, going back to the beginning, and if I had to label myself with a theme, it’s tradition. Traditional values of hard work and consideration of all! Which in January at Cubitt and West translated into a 100% record at 5 new listings and 5 new sales of asking price or above. Now I have to stop don’t I, as I just said I’ll demonstrate what we can do for you and that’s it! Hope to see you soon, and until next time I wish you well... Horsham Piazza Italia Roadshow 13th March: Six towns, six events, all in one day

H

orsham District Council’s Piazza Italia festival takes on a new twist this year. To celebrate ten years of this unique event, the festival is going to include a tour around the district. On Sunday 13th March, in advance of the main Piazza Italia celebration in Horsham town, which takes place over three days of the Easter weekend, a selection of superb Italian vintage and modern cars and bikes will take a tour of the district. Setting off from Horsham town centre, the Piazza Italia fleet, including some 20 Piazza Supercars, feature cars and Italian bikes, will travel in convoy to Billingshurst, Pulborough, Storrington, Steyning and finally Henfield, before returning to Horsham town centre. Each of the participating market towns will stage their own special welcome celebration as the cars and bikes stop off. There will also be a month-long, district-wide celebration of all things Italian throughout March leading up to the main Piazza Italia festival over the Easter weekend on Good Friday 25th March, Easter Saturday 26th March and Easter Monday 28th March. Event organisers at Horsham District Council have teamed up with representatives in each of the five market towns and villages including Community Partnerships in Billingshurst, Pulborough, Steyning and Henfield and the Parish Council in Storrington, to make the Piazza Italia Tour one of the first all-encompassing events to run across Horsham district. During the month

of Piazza Italia many shops and businesses will be holding special promotions and discounts so make sure to read through the tour guide which will be available online. The District Tour will also feature this year’s event charities: Chestnut Tree House, The Children’s Trust and Winston’s Wish will all be on hand to talk about their great causes, with Horsham Piazza Italia for the first time supporting three children’s charities. This year’s Easter Horsham Piazza Italia will feature a great range of supercars, super bikes, Italian food and drink and of course, great themed entertainments. For the first time visitors will be able to actually ride in some fantastic supercars, Piazza Italia having teamed up with the fantastic Sporting Bears Club to offer passenger rides in return for a donation to charity. Rides will be based from the new event space outside the council’s offices at Parkside, so make sure to head over the Chart Way bridge and discover all the great activities taking place. For a timetable of events and the latest updates make sure to track www.HorshamPiazzaItalia.co.uk or the Horsham Piazza Italia Facebook and Twitter pages where all of the news will be released first. Don’t miss this unique spectacle for the whole district. Please come out, show your support and give a warm welcome to the Italian fleet as they stop off at a market town or village near you. Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Councillor Gordon Lindsay said, “It’s great to see Horsham District Council’s most successful event inspiring so many partners from across the whole district to come together and generate a unique set of activities to bring people into each of their towns and villages. This is a model in which Horsham District Council can use its own resources in combination with those from the Communities to benefit the district as a whole. Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council

Ciao! Billingshurst Library car-park does not often purr with a concerto of Italian Ferrari, Lamborghini or Alfa Romeo engines – but it will on Sunday 13th March between 10am and 12 noon. There might even be a classic Fiat 500 there too, and a few motorcycles thrown in for your delight! So why not come and see these, and other, exotic vehicles from Italy as they visit Billingshurst on a gran tourismo around the market towns. Afterwards, Whispers will be open for a cappuccino, some pasta or more traditional fare. Arrivederci! Patrick Perks

Community / Accountancy

West Sussex Community Minibus Association (Billingshurst)

T

he Community Minibus Association of West Sussex is a registered charity soon to be celebrating 40 years of operation. The Billingshurst Division provides regular weekday door-to-door minibus transport for local residents of all ages for local shopping trips to Horsham, Worthing and Shoreham as well as day outings to places of interest such as Chichester and Eastbourne, among others. These can be half-day or full-day trips depending upon the destination. The Association is run entirely by volunteers who provide a safe, friendly and helpful service, where the drivers and escorts pick up and return passengers at their front doors, with help in carrying shopping if necessary. While regrettably

our buses cannot accommodate child seating or wheelchairs, we do accommodate walking aids and have space for shopping bags. Why not join us in providing this sociable, popular and valuable service for the local community? Keep Billingshurst Frack Free – update Forthcoming public meeting: ‘Facts before Fracking: Health’

O

ne wet and windy Sunday in January, Keep Billingshurst Frack Free organised a ‘No Fracking Way’ march around Horsham, as part of a nationwide demonstration happening in over 30 other towns and cites at the same time. We were pleased to be joined by over 50 people waving banners and giving out information to help raise awareness of the dangers of fracking, the method of pumping chemicals and water deep into the ground to release gas and oil. While nothing more has yet happened at the Broadford Bridge site on Adversane Lane, it pays to be informed about the reality of the industry before the trucks roll into the area, as they are in to the Horse Hill site just over the border in Surrey. This is why we are holding a public meeting entitled ‘Facts Before Fracking: Health’ with two key speakers. We have Dr Michael Warhurst, Director of CHEM Trust, a UK charity working to protect humans and wildlife from harmful chemicals. And from Medact will be Dr Jill Sutcliffe, who Village Tweet readers will know is Chair of Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green.

Medact is the charity for health professionals and others working to improve health worldwide, which recently published a report examining whether fracking can be done safely. Drawing on scientific, peer-reviewed studies, the report concluded that the arguments in favour of fracking do not stand up when scrutinised. It calls for a moratorium on the controversial process while a full health impact assessment is undertaken, in line with the approach elsewhere in the world. The Medact report was supported by a group of leading health professionals, with a letter in the British Medical Journal stating that the arguments against fracking on health and ecological grounds are overwhelming. Everyone is welcome to come along to this free event at the Capitol in Horsham, on Wednesday 23rd March, 7-9pm. Email keepbillingshurstfrackfree@mail.com to find out more and join our campaign or go to frackfreebillingshurst.com for more details. Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read March’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Joy Luck Club – Amy Tan Growing up in a typical English town this novel made a huge impact on me when I first read it. The colourful characters seem such a world apart from what I was familiar with and yet it is a story about all of our lives and a woman’s relationship with her mother. In 1949 four Chinese immigrant women in San Francisco agree to meet up each week to play mahjong, calling themselves the Joy Luck Club. Here they discuss the lives they left behind in China and the dreams and hopes they have for their daughters as they embark on their new lives in America. While not strictly speaking short stories, each chapter tells a different aspect of their lives. The first half of the book tells of the lives of the women in the Joy Luck Club. We learn of their lives in China. An-Mei Hsu whose mother left her to become a concubine to a rich merchant and Lindo Jeng who was forced to marry someone she didn’t love. We then learn of their daughters and their new lives growing up in America, in a culture that seems alien to the world their mothers are describing. Here lies the clash of cultures which leads to friction between mother and daughter. The older generation feel as if they are losing their daughters to American culture and the younger generation do not feel as if anything their mothers talk about is relevant to their lives. Sound familiar? You don’t need to be a Chinese immigrant or growing up in America to relate to the universal themes that Tan weaves into her debut novel. It is about learning to understand the people that fill our lives and accepting that they only have our best interests at heart. It is about learning that our parents too are real people, arriving in the present through a series of events that have shaped them and made us who we are too.

Emily Feather and the Enchanted Door – Holly Webb Have you ever felt as if you just don’t fit in? Where even your own family seems different to you? This is how ten-year-old Emily Feather feels. She looks different to her siblings with her dark hair. It is true that everyone looks a bit different (even her older twin sisters aren’t identical) but Emily just can’t shake the feeling that there is something about her that sets her apart from the rest of the family. Her best friend Rachel points out that she is the only one not named after a bird, but surely there is more to it than that? Emily lives in an unusual house. Her dad, Ash, is an author, writing fantasy books. The house seems as if it could have come straight out of one of his books. Her room is in the old attic at the top of a rickety flight of stairs, with ornately carved mirrors on the landing. Sometimes it even feels as if the walls have moved, but that would be silly as Emily knows that can’t happen. One day she is passing one of the mirrors and sees a strange reflection in it. A girl with green skin is staring back at her and that is just the start of a series of events that will completely change Emily’s life. It turns out that she was right. She is different from the rest of her family, but not in any way she could have possibly imagined. Holly Webb is better known for her novels and books about animals and has written over 90 books for children. However, this book – the first in a new magical series – shows that she is just as adept at writing about fantasy worlds. Aimed at readers aged 8+ this is a lovely introduction to traditional fairy mythology. It does take a while to get going and the titular enchanted door doesn’t appear until the final quarter of the book. This is clearly intended to introduce the reader to Emily’s world which is then explored in future books.

Mother’s Day / About the house

What’s the Point of Mother’s Day?

“W

hy do we even need Mother's Day?” My 14-year-old daughter grumped as I suggested she might like to put some consideration into a card and flowers. Well Gracie, let me enlighten you… The full time job. No holiday. No time off for good behaviour. 24 hours, 365 days per year and no pay. If my boss at work tried to impose these conditions as the terms of my contract I’d have grounds to take him to court. The housework. It may surprise you to know, Gracie, that the house does not clean and tidy itself. Clothing does not wash, iron and sort itself into drawers. There isn’t an army of cleaning fairies who pop out at night to dust and run the vacuum cleaner over the carpet. It is actually your Mum. OK, Gracie, you do the odd chore (generally reluctantly) but mostly, let’s be honest here, it’s mum. The food. Meal-planning, shopping, cooking. It’s just done, sorted, no problems. I realise you and your brother clear the table and stack the dishwasher, mostly while grumbling about slave labour and the general unfairness of life, but I’m betting you’d miss the meals if they suddenly stopped. The taxi. How often do you use your mum as a fareless taxi-

service? What if she made you walk, catch a bus or cycle to your friends’ houses. What if she starting charging you? The organiser. Where are you supposed to be at 9.30am this Saturday? Or 4pm on Tuesday? Bet mum knows! The therapist. That boy you like but who broke your heart? Mum will offer hugs and a shoulder to cry on. That nasty teacher who was making your life a misery? Who spoke to her on your behalf? Which subjects should you take at school? Should you choose hockey practice or clarinet lessons? Mum will advise. You may not like the advice or take it, but you know she cares. The banker. That school trip you forgot to tell us about? The night out at the cinema with friends you simply must attend? The new shoes you absolutely have to buy? Who stumps up for all this stuff? That’s right, your mum. So a card, a handwritten note, a hug, a kiss and a heartfelt “Thank you, Mum” will go a long way towards making her feel special, and yes it does seem ridiculous we have to have a day set aside for it – but that's the point! In our busy lives for one day we stop, think and appreciate everything she does. So that, Gracie darling, is why we have Mother’s Day! Tom Hancock

New Musical Director to conduct ‘Saul’ in Billingshurst

C

athal Garvey, the new Musical Director of the Billingshurst Choral Society, is a prominent choral and orchestral conductor. He took over as Musical Director from George Jones who founded the choir 30 years ago and retired last year. Cathal has already conducted two very successful concerts in Billingshurst. The first, in June 2015, was an evening of popular choruses from the Opera House and Concert Hall. David Eckford, Chairman of the Choir, said, “The concert on 27th June was a landmark event for the Billingshurst Choral Society. It was the first time in 30 years that our choir had been led by a different Musical Director.” The second concert included Haydn’s Paukenmesse (The Mass in the Time of War), and one of the most popular of all choral orchestral works, Vivaldi’s Gloria. David adds, “The choir are now rehearsing for our next concert, Handel’s first great oratorio: Saul. This is a major work and will be a very exciting performance. It takes place on Saturday 19th March at the

Billingshurst Choral Society www.billingshurstchoralsociety.org

Billingshurst Leisure Centre.” Saul has been described as one of the supreme masterpieces of dramatic art and is comparable with masterpieces such as King Lear. The first performance of Saul took place in January 1739 at the King’s Theatre, Haymarket. The work is in three acts and the story comes from the biblical Book of Samuel, just after David defeated the Philistine giant, Goliath. David returns to the court of King Saul a hero but by the end of the first act, Saul has decreed that David should be hunted down and killed. In Act Two, an apparent reconciliation takes place. Saul offers David his Daughter’s hand in marriage and command of the Israelite army. However, Saul is very jealous and secretly hopes that David will be killed in battle. Much to Saul’s dismay, David returns victorious and Saul makes an unsuccessful attempt to kill David himself. In Act Three, the work comes to a dramatic conclusion, David is victorious and becomes ruler of the people. Keith Paul, Billingshurst Choral Society

Equine / About the house

Spring to it!

A

t last – spring is well on its way, a welcome time after the wettest and dreariest winter on record. There is no doubt that grazing paddocks and fields will have taken a battering after being waterlogged and poached, good preparation now will ensure you will get the best out of your grazing this summer, although owners of native ponies may well not want this! Now is the time to sort out any areas that need reseeding and fence them off. Harrowing the field will help to remove any dead uneaten grass, trodden-in hay and spread any droppings that may not have been able to be collected due to the ground having been too wet to get a barrow on. Rolling the pasture will help push down divots and rutted areas caused by the horses moving around on wet ground, once this has been done the paddock will be ready for seeding. Choose a seed suitable for horses, grass seed varies widely so ask at your agricultural merchant for the best one for your purpose, a seed that is suitable for agricultural use such as cattle grazing will be much too rich for horses leading to obesity and Laminitis. Fencing may also be in need of some repairs after the winter months. Take time to check all fencing over carefully and replace any broken rails or posts immediately; for those bigger jobs seek quotes from a good contractor before they get too busy. Owners of native ponies, good doers and those prone to laminitis will be thinking of restricting grazing, especially in spring when the grass flushes through as it is very apt to do this year due to the mild weather and high water content. The use of electric fencing to restrict access to too much grass is a must. Grazing muzzles are a very useful way to prevent the horse or pony from consuming too much grass. If using one for the first time makes sure your horse can drink while wearing the muzzle and pick at a little grass; check the fit carefully and each day remove the muzzle and check your horse for any rubs it may have caused. Monitor your horse’s weight and condition daily with the use of a weigh tape and if you keep your horse on a yard why not have a visit from one of the feed companies who will bring a

weighbridge for the day – this can be quite an eye opener! Another important spring task is to look at your worming programme for the year ahead. You should have done the winter dose for Encysted small redworm so now is the time to do worm egg counts. These tests will reduce the need for unnecessary worming by identifying those that need treatment. The days of blanket dosing everything on the yard are well and truly over and the use of testing will help to slow the onset of wormer resistance as we won’t be giving worming doses to those horses that don’t need treatment. Kits can be bought at your local feed store or via the internet. There is now also a simple swab test for tapeworm on the market – I used it last season and will be doing so again this season. I felt like I was a member of a CSI team while taking the saliva swab from the horse’s mouth! By using these tests the only worming treatment I have given was a plain Equest for Encysted Redworm back in January. Paddock management also plays a vital role in parasite control, remove droppings daily from paddocks – especially for horses on limited grazing. For larger acreages cross-grazing with sheep is an ideal way to keep parasite burdens down. You will also have noticed with great delight that the days are finally getting longer. I don’t know about you but for my horse this winter was an enforced rest as it was either too boggy or too dark to hack out! Start a fitness plan now to get you and your horse ready for summer, build up his work slowly, starting with some gentle hacking and light schooling sessions. If you don’t have a school it is possible to school on a hack or see if you can hire one locally. Monitor his fitness levels by making notes in a diary or use one of the great apps available such as ‘map my ride’. Above all, enjoy the spring and get out and enjoy riding. After this winter you all deserve it! Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Moving house is a huge decision. Decisions within decisions. But Layla Sussex says it’s often a case of ‘love conquers all’. But who makes that decision? What are the important factors for each individual? Do we all look at or consider the same things when looking at potential new homes? The list of requirements can be quite long and sometimes what we think we want and what we like when viewing can be quite different. It isn’t always the ‘big’ issues that are the hurdles; it can be the

smaller ones that end up being the stumbling blocks. What I find interesting in this job is that once the big questions are answered such as location, commute time, neighbourhood, and price, there can be a much longer list of issues that make or break the choice of property. Such as, size of the bedrooms for the kids, will there be arguments? The age of the boiler, the size of the lounge, the garden size,

People: The right team to help you

Left to right: Beverley Wigby, Lisa Falkner and Layla Sussex with Stewart Cracknell.

what direction the house faces. Is there room for an extension or conservatory? How soon will the windows need replacing? How big is the loft? What storage is there? Right down to where the wheelie bins are kept. Naturally, there is often a voice somewhere in the household pushing a case for where the flat screen television will go or if a room can be spared for the games console. Not to mention hot

01403 780300 debate over design choices, but we all feel we know best on that topic. Talking to people looking for a new home there is usually one person that dominates the wish list and the other may only mention a couple of things. I do not think that romance is as dead as some think. It may not all be dancing, dinner and diamonds but there is always one partner who goes along with the other’s wishes because they only want them to be happy. In my case, we moved a few years ago, and the only factors were price, number of bedrooms and location as

my husband is a retained Fireman and has to be able to respond within 4 minutes of being alerted. So we needed to find a house within that time boundary. This limited our search area quite considerably. In fact I think there was one house and that is the one we bought! When we help people who are looking for a new home it is important that we can introduce them to the right properties rather then just sending out details because they are within the right price bracket. This also works for our vendors too as they are then only

entertaining the right viewers. Also, we build good rapport with our applicants as it helps us establish more information about what they want and need. It is occasionally part of our job to guide the viewer, it’s up to us to be astute, listen and read between the lines so we can help them find exactly what they are looking for. It’s good and necessary to have a list of the wants that would make the perfect place when searching for your new home. But don’t be surprised if you end up somewhere unexpected that you absolutely love.

What have 2nd Billingshurst Guides been up to?

B

efore Christmas, 29 guides and 6 leaders visited Whispers Tea Rooms in Billingshurst for a delicious two course meal. With Christmas jumpers, Christmas crackers and secret Santa, the evening was great fun and enjoyed by everyone in the unit. It was different to our normal Christmas parties at the scout and guide hut and it was such a good evening that hopefully this venue will be added to our future Christmas celebrations! This was followed by a trip to Fishers Farm Park to watch the pantomime of Cinderella. Despite it being a wet and windy day, everyone had fun with their friends. However, we were glad to come into the warm in the Saddles Room

Restaurant to enjoy our lunch. We have now achieved either our Animal Active or First Aid badge and are looking forward to an exciting term including Lambing at Brinsbury and Airhop. It’s been fun doing a range of activities with the Guides and hopefully there is more coming up for the rest of 2016. Garden View

Lovely Lilies (and a spot of hard-pruning)

T

he first day of spring this year is officially March 20th. Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems. Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore. Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you… Lilies. I always thought lilies were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention

would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8"/20cm pot and five fit into a 10"/25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over. Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with diluted tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need repotting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am. Rachel Leverton

“You could live for a week on that!” John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

’ve just had to buy a new pair of wellies. Now, I realise that this does not quote qualify as worldwide news, but all the same it did make me ponder on the way the value of items have varied over the years… The pair I selected were what I guess you would call ‘economy class’. Or, if you prefer, cheap! The range available went from £15 odd to the best part of £100 but I know from past experience that no matter what price I paid, one pair would last no longer than any other. The objects that seem to lurk around farmyards that are just waiting to launch themselves at gumboots is legion. If they should survive for three or four months I’m lucky. In my teenage, dairy working, days they had to stand the additional perils of cows’ hooves that seemed to have a particular desire to stand on them and, while ripping chunks out of the uppers, would also endeavour as a bonus to remove my toenails and also improve my vocabulary. Anyway, it was this wellie price that prompted my mind to consider the differences in the now and then… We are inclined to sound off about how much we could get for our hard-earned cash when we were young, and how the costs have now gone through the roof for basic living expenses. We’ve all spouted on about going to the cinema, buying a drink and ice cream, eating a fish and chip supper on the way home, and still having tuppence left out of a bob! So let’s examine a few things. First, those wellies. In the mid-’fifties a pair of Dunlop Target half calf-length boots cost me 7/6d. That’s 37.5p in today’s money. But that was a third of my week’s wages! I reckon today’s price was pretty good in comparison. I practically lived in wellies then as dairy farming meant constant water and unmentionable substances. In the summer months when we were bold enough to discard our overalls and expose our scrawny legs to the sun via a pair of shorts, we would also show the public the problem that occurs with wellie wearers if they have hairy legs. The constant slap of the wellies top edge as you walk does a superb job of removing a broad stripe of hair from the calf muscle. This stripe is a prominent feature of the dairy man to this day – check it out on the beach this summer for yourself! For a normal working man to be able to fly abroad for a holiday in those early post-war years

36

would have been impossible. Now our houses are full of machines that are supposed to take a lot of the drudgery of housework away. We have equipment systems in our houses, cars, and pockets that can bring us constant entertainment. We can shop without leaving home and eat the most delicious (and fattening) food any time of the year and holidaying in England can be dearer than jetting off to the Med. So why do we keep reflecting on those days of long ago and viewing them with nostalgia while muttering to ourselves that life was so much simpler then? I can only comment on what farming was like in those days. Without doubt it was hard, very hard. A working week was around 56 hours before overtime kicked in. We started milking at 6.30 a.m. and finished for the day around 5.30 p.m., providing there was no hay-making or harvesting to be done. One day a week off but we all worked at Christmas so that the milking could be done as quickly as possible. Were we happy? I must confess that I look back on those days as very enjoyable. I was young, fit, and eating some of the best and freshest food you could wish for. Milk from the cooler, butter from the churn and fresh veg and meat from the farms, besides which, we knew nothing else. Most farms employed quite a large staff compared with now. A great deal of the tasks that machines can do now were down to muscle power then. A sack of wheat weighed in at two and a quarter hundred weight, so that was the amount a farmer was allowed to expect a man to carry. Mind you, it took a real man to actually carry that unaided. I could cope with a hundred weight, but one of those beasties, forget it! Now it’s all done by bulk movement and the man with buckling legs and bent back thankfully is no more. Well, at least with that job! So, looking back, I guess we can find many an example of the great difference in now and thens values and costings. I think life then was harder in many ways, but somehow we escaped that bane of modern life: Stress. Despite all the time-saving devices there seems to be less time to actually enjoy living nowadays. Maybe it’s an age thing. Maybe it’s those rosetinted spectacles and never ending sunny summers. Perhaps as the years pass today’s youngsters will look back at their young days and reflect how much better those days had been. Perhaps. Bet they will never get a pair of wellies for 7/6d though! John Nash

Preparing for the worst – data loss! Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services

W

e all know we should do it – yet so very few of us do. Yes it’s time to talk about backing up – again! Backing up is a simple process but it takes discipline and time. It can also be confusing but once you have backed up for the first time, each time after that is easier. But if it’s that or facing the nightmare of losing your favourite photos or important files then it’s worth the hassle. You should get in the habit of backing up files on a regular basis, every week or month or whenever you get new important documents and pictures. You should also have at least two different types of backup so that if one fails (along with your computer – it happens) then you have a backup to your backup… Backup No.1: The External Hard Drive. Just like the drive in your computer an external hard drive is a place you can store your files. You usually plug it in to your computer via a USB cable. If all you want is a copy of your files then you just copy and paste those you want to backup onto the external drive. If you want to backup your entire system, with things including emails then you’ll need to use backup software. There are plenty of free options available but we think this one has the best features for free software: EaseUS Todo Backup Free. It gives you file, disk and system image backups, a scheduler, disk cloning, and a bootable recovery disc for easy image restoration. It also has some major extras, such as the

Smart Backup system which checks the folders you specify and backs up whatever has changed. And it enables to you to save your archives to Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox. If you a Mac user, you are lucky as the OS comes bundled with Time Machine which backs up new or modified files unobtrusively in the background hourly. One drawback with the external hard drive option is that hard drives degrade over time – that’s one of the reasons you need backups because your computer’s hard drive is no exception. Backup No.2: Cloud Storage. We’ve written about cloud services before; it’s an Internet service where you can store files remotely (thereby guarding against theft or fire which could leave you without your PC and external hard drive backup). Some cloud services are free but offer limited space. If you need more space then you can pay for it. You can transfer your files and data to your cloud storage and move them back whenever you want. The downside is unless you actually copy the files over – you still only have one copy of your files but they are now in the cloud. Other risks include the fact that cloud services can be hacked and it can take a long time to transfer your files. If you implement both options then, if you do ever face that day when your computer ‘dies’, you’ll be prepared for it. Bax Computer Services (www.baxcomputers.co.uk)

Future Choices Fair at The Weald School

n 10th February The Weald School opened its doors for its 22nd Future Choices Fair, the flagship event in its rolling careers programme. With over 600 attendees, the Fair was open to students across all year groups. The evening is designed to empower students to make informed decisions about their future choices, whether they are considering apprenticeships, further or higher education or employment. Throughout the evening, students networked with business professionals gaining first-hand insight into entry routes, experience required to break into particular industries along with employability skills and raising awareness of the number of career opportunities available in the world of work. With a record breaking 55 exhibitors, the Fair showcased employers such as The Printed Word, Microsoft, Thomas Keating Ltd and PMW Communications; Further and Higher Education Institutions Northbrook College, Chichester College, Universities of Oxford, Plymouth College of Art, Kent and of course our very own outstanding Weald Sixth Form; and Apprenticeships Providers Ibstock Brick Ltd, West Sussex County Council and Jace Training. Parallel interactive sessions ran alongside the exhibition about Apprenticeships, the importance of

STEM careers, student finance and careers in IT. Sarah Wilson, Careers and Work Experience Manager at The Weald explained why the school places such importance on events like these: “With so many options and information now available, Future Choice planning can be a complicated process. We want to make it easy and engaging for all students. Along with support from us and their families, its important students take the opportunity to think about their future and take ownership of these big decisions early on.” First time exhibitor and former student James Tucker from Microsoft echoed Sarah’s comments: “It was a fantastic experience to be back at the Weald after leaving almost four years ago. I can remember visiting the Careers Fair myself numerous times and not having a clue what I wanted to do, so it was brilliant to talk to the students and show them just how many options are open to them.” A big thanks to everyone who supported the event, particularly the exhibitors. St Gabriel’s Playgroup celebrate OFSTED rating: ‘Good’

S

t Gabriel’s Playgroup, Billingshurst, was inspected on 1st December 2015, and was granted a rating of ‘Good’. The Inspector announced, “The manager, staff and committee have worked effectively to improve the overall quality of the provision.” The six members of staff work effectively in partnership with parents, using their knowledge to plan activities to extend learning and development, valuing children’s involvement. In turn the children are well behaved, confident, enjoy learning and concentrate well. Leadership and management are good; staff constantly review the practice to reduce safety hazards as well as organising challenging activities. They work effectively with other agencies to support children with special educational needs. Staff are good role models in relation to their positive communication which helps the children to acquire good self-help skills, developing the skills they need for their future and for starting school. Physical well-being and healthy eating are also well promoted. To further improve the playgroup the staff plan to continue to develop the children’s early reading and writing skills, and increase opportunities for the children

Local mum to run London Marathon in aid of Mencap Plea for local support and sponsorship I’m Tracy Venison, a local lady living in Billingshurst, running the Virgin London Marathon for the first time. Those who know me (possibly via my company, Pride and Groom) will realise running 26.2 miles will be no easy task. I lead the same hectic life as most mums so fitting in training is not easy, but running for Mencap – a worthy charity that is very often overlooked when it comes to charity handouts – is giving me the drive and determination to succeed. I need local support from businesses to raise the much needed funds this charity needs to give children and adults with learning disabilities the support to lead a full and valued life. Local businesses such as Cubit & West, MXT swim, Cocos and Village Tweet have already shown their support along with friends, colleagues and customers. With additional support from local businesses we can make a dramatic difference to some very challenged peoples’ lives so any and all support is gratefully received. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe – JustGiving will never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity. Please donate at www.justgiving.com/Tracy-Venison Thank you in anticipation of your support. Tracy

Jeremy Quin MP visits Billingshurst Primary School

H

orsham MP Jeremy Quin visited Billingshurst Primary School on Friday 12th February. The purpose of the visit was to meet Head Teacher Helen Williamson, staff, governors and children to congratulate them on one of the fastest school ‘turnarounds’ Ofsted has ever seen. Billingshurst moved from ‘Requires Improvement’ through to ‘Good’, only just missing an ‘Outstanding’ rating, all within 20 months. Jeremy was given a tour of the school by the House Captains, talking to teachers and pupils. He also learned first-hand how rigorous testing now is in core subjects by joining Year 6s for a spelling test! Jeremy updated Helen Williamson on recent developments of the fair school funding campaign of which Jeremy is very much at the forefront, working alongside other West Sussex MPs and local Heads. Jeremy said, “Billingshurst Primary is a very happy school with good leadership. It was a pleasure to hear such a good news story about their performance. Turning around a school

is not easy but Billingshurst Primary School has done a terrific job.” Helen Williamson, Head teacher of Billingshurst Primary School said, “It was a pleasure to welcome Jeremy to our school and to show him what a happy and successful school we are. I was particularly impressed that he willingly sat a Year 6 spelling test – however, the results are a state secret! It was very helpful to hear an update on the ‘Worth Less?’ campaign and to be able to share the concerns we have for our school with him. The children certainly enjoyed meeting their Member of Parliament.’ Jeremy regularly visits schools, charities, businesses and community groups in the Horsham constituency; please do let him know if you would like Jeremy to visit you by emailing him at jeremy.quin.mp@parliament.uk. ompulsory Microchipping – don’t forget, from the 6th April 2016, all dogs must be microchipped and registered to an approved database by the time they are eight weeks old. Retained Hero Calls it a Day!

T

he Retained Watch Manager at Billingshurst Fire Station has decided to call it day. Kevin Marchant has given 22 years’ service to help and protect his local community which is a truly outstanding achievement. Kev joined the fire service as a fire fighter and worked his way up through the ranks to a Crew Manager and then Watch Manager where he was in charge of the station. He will be missed by the fire service but especially by the crew at the Billingshurst station where everyone enjoyed his humour, kindness and most of all, experience and knowledge within the service. On a personal note to Ken, “I can personally say I have learnt so much in the last seven years from you, and a fire call won’t be the same without you, but everyone respects your decision.”

We now have to carry on the excellent day-today running of the Fire Station which Kev built up, and with the likelihood or Rob Whitton taking charge, I feel we can all achieve this and make Kev proud. “From everyone who has known you within the service, we wish you the best of luck in your next chapter, leaving do party now in progress! Good Luck Kev.” This month sees our first Charity Car Wash of 2016. On 26th March, we will be poised, pails at the ready, for all of you to bring your cars down to the fire station and have them hand-washed! All we ask in return is that everyone makes a donation for our charity, The Firefighters Charity. This charity relies on days like these to fund as much as possible to look after injured firefighters and their families. Billingshurst Youth Club Billingshurst Youth Club is a lively and thriving youth club held at Jubilee Fields Sports Pavilion. We meet every Tuesday during term time from 7.30-9.00pm. Our ages range from 11-16 years old. We run a wide range of activities including crafts, sports, and sessions that might be informative to young people. During the summer we make use of the sports grounds available with wide games, and outdoor sports. As well as this we aim to run trips for the young people including things such

Level Crossing Danger The Parish Council has been asked by Network Rail to help publicise the danger of illegal, inconsiderate and dangerous parking on the south side of the Lower Station Road level crossing. DO NOT park illegally around the junction of Lower Station Road and Daux Road. (The photo shows the double yellow lines by the Billingshurst station sign.) It reduces the road width and makes access for trucks travelling south from Station Road over the level crossing and into Daux Road difficult. This poses the risk of the level crossing barrier coming down on the truck as it tries to manoeuvre.

Dog Fouling Facts Sadly, the Parish Council has recently received complaints about persistent dog fouling in the parish. Here is a reminder of the facts about dog fouling: It is the responsibility of the dog owner to clean up after the dog if it fouls in a public area. Failure to do so may incur a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80. The law applies almost everywhere once you are outside your own garden. It covers parks, footpaths, open spaces, verges, alleyways, playing fields and any other

as paintballing! The youth club is a wonderful space where young people can come and relax in a safe location, and spend time with one another. There are now many signs up in these areas however the law applies regardless of signage. Horsham District Council can issue an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice of £80, however the maximum fine is £1,000. There are Enforcement Officers patrolling the District to carry out enforcement of the law. Dog waste can be disposed of in dog litter or public litter bins if they are available or you can take the waste home and dispose of it in your general refuse bin. You must be prepared each time you take your dog out to pick up the waste every time. This is the responsibility that comes with dog ownership. Take a supply of bags with you. It is an offence to leave your dog’s mess in a public place. Dog waste, although unpleasant, does not pose a serious risk to public health. However, in extreme and rare instances it can cause blindness due to a parasitic worm called toxocariasis. Dog waste is not dangerous if it is picked up correctly. Use a bag or a pooper scooper so you do not touch the waste and it is perfectly safe to collect. People who are registered blind are not expected to clean up after their dog. If you are aware of a perpetrator that does not clean up after their dog please report it to Horsham District Council on 01403 733144.

Our Community Volunteers – meet Denise Campbell

W

hen Denise Campbell’s daughter became a teenager, her mother realised that there was very little on offer for that age group in the village, so she decided to become more involved with the community herself to try to improve the situation. She joined the Community Partnership in 2003 and started organising youth events and workshops – some creative, others related to wellbeing – to create opportunities for Billingshurst’s youth. It was from this focus on youth that Denise, now Chairman of three years’ standing of the Partnership, started WISH (Work Information and Support Hub) six months ago, which provides support and advice to jobseekers. Initially WISH was aimed at helping young school leavers and graduates in the village but has now widened its remit to include anyone who is seeking work. The club is free to join and helps identify and develop skills, particularly those sought by local employers. Working in collaboration with Horsham District Council, Denise produced a programme of sessions which bring people together with a facilitator to work on their CV and skills, setting weekly tasks to move them towards their goals. WISH has been very successful, and

since it started a number of people have found jobs, including nearly all the younger members. She is keen to point out, though, that even those who have not yet secured work have grown in confidence and improved their skills, and benefit from being in a group which encourages and celebrates their progress. The programme itself has also been deemed a success and discussions are underway to duplicate it in other local villages in the near future. When I asked what she enjoys about her role, Denise simply answered, “The contact with people.” The daughter of a tailor, she runs her own business designing clothes, but it is her role in the Partnership which brings her into contact with people in Billingshurst. She loves the challenge of turning an idea into reality and seeing the benefits enjoyed by individuals and the community as a whole. She believes that there is much untapped potential which, with some help, can empower people to change their lives.
