A

s I write this it is still warm enough to wander about the village in a short-sleeved shirt yet here we are with another November issue – yes it’s the month of fireworks and poppies. And, putting an end to short-sleeved shirts, just around the corner is Christmas. (One shop I was in at the end of September was selling Christmas trees – there should be a law against that!) If you run a restaurant or pub – or any business with a Christmas promotion – why not let Village Tweet help promote your business this Festive Season! Grahame

The area’s longest-established, independent family firm

Keith Hutchinson. FNAEA Director With over 30 years’ experience as an estate agent, Keith entered the trade as a trainee in Worthing and after 5 years was running a small estate agency in Findon Valley. He then decided to commute from his home in Barns Green to run a large market leading estate agents in Cobham, Surrey. Keith enjoyed his years running the branch in Cobham, and learnt a lot about the trade and gained huge experience dealing with international clients in a very competitive marketplace. After 5 years Keith was offered a role managing an estate agent in Storrington, which he did very successfully for quite a few years, winning national awards along the way. His success led him to the role of Area Management and Head of Training and Development for a large practice with offices all along the south coast and Surrey. Keith then had the chance to establish a local independent estate agent in Horsham town centre known as Mallards. He successfully ran this branch for 12 years, which saw it become one of the market leading firms in Horsham, and he also oversaw the other branches of the company. With almost 5 years running Fowlers Billingshurst under his belt, Keith is able to use all his vast experience and knowledge to help and advise individuals, families and companies on all property matters in the local area. The office has thriving sales, lettings and new homes departments all at your disposal. Fowlers are passionate about estate agency and as the area’s longest established family firm, a no pressure approach is guaranteed. For Keith’s free advice call him on 01403 786787 or call in to see him and his team.

Pear Tart Tatin METHOD

A slightly different take on a traditional tart tatin

1. Preheat oven to 200°C/gas 6. Put a 21cm frying pan with an ovenproof handle (important!) on a hob over a medium heat. Add the sugar to the dry pan and heat, stirring constantly until it turns a lovely caramel colour. Add the butter, ginger and cinnamon and stir well to combine. 2. Place the pears in the caramel and spoon over the mixture. Turn the heat down and cook for 5-10 minutes until the pears are just tender and cooked but retain their shape. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Arrange the pears to form an attractive pattern in the pan. 3. Roll out the pastry to about 5mm thick and cut a disc slightly bigger than your pan (about 24cm). Place the pastry disc on top of the pears and caramel, then carefully tuck it snugly around the outside of the pears and down into the sides of the pan. 4. Bake the pie in the oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up. Remove from the oven and leave for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edge, place a large plate over the top and carefully turn the tart onto the plate. Serve with cream.

Preparation time: 1 hour 20 minutes Serves 6

INGREDIENTS 125g caster sugar 40g cold butter, chopped ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground cinnamon 3 large pears, peeled, cored and cut into wedges 375g all-butter puff pastry Double cream, to serve

T

BilliFest 2017 is all set!

he overwhelming successful BilliFest Family Fun Day & Christmas Fayre that was held in Billingshurst High Street last year, will be staged there again this year on Saturday, 2nd December. And, for the first time, it is being sponsored by the Big Lottery Fund community initiative. Announcing the news, Ken Johnson, Billingshurst Community Partrnership’s Organising Committee Chair, said, “We are thrilled to have the support of the Big Lottery Fund. They recognise the importance of BilliFest as our major community event at Christmas and their funding helps make it possible”. Ken said, “Having moved back to the High Street last year, our surveys among visitors, stall holders and High Street retailers was hugely positive. BilliFest brings the whole community together in the very heart of the village and it puts our permeant shops centre stage”. He added, “Last year’s gazebos were a great success. Their flexibility enables us to meet the increasing demand for more stalls. They are also quick to put up and take down”. The BilliFest Family Fun Day & Christmas Fayre 2016 attracted 1,500 people to the village centre, and this year, it will kick off on 2nd December at 10am until 3pm with stalls in some 40 gazebos running up the centre of the High Street from Sainsbury’s to Jengers Mead. Just that section of the High Street will be closed allowing access to the Jengers Mead car park and shops from the north. High Street shops will be

offering their own promotions and, of course, Santa will be there too. Last year, 250 children met Father Christmas and received their free Christmas present from him, as is our tradition. There will be the widest range of Christmas items to buy and things to do at BilliFest, from Christmas wreaths, to food and wine, and from gifts to locally crafted beers and our annual Grand Raffle. “It is the perfect opportunity to find great Christmas presents as well as have some family fun,” Ken added. “Of course, BilliFest will present its usual non-stop music and entertainment throughout the day and Radio Weald, which is run by the Weald School students, will again be handling our public address”. He concluded, “We are so grateful to our sponsors who help make it all possible. At the time of going to press, in addition to the Big Lottery Fund, they include Main Sponsors: Devine Homes, CoCo’s Style, Lions and The King’s Head; and Supporting Sponsors: Riverdale Developments, Truffles, and Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce. We hope to see you all there on 2nd December!” Billingshurst Community Partnership – Martin Spurrier and the BILLIFEST Team BilliFest 2016 photos by Martin Spurrier

Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k races

Big increase in numbers for 2017 Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k races

O

n Sunday 24th September, Barns Green hosted its 35th annual half marathon and its second 10km race. Over 2,000 runners registered for the two races. The Barns Green Half Marathon started at 10am and twenty minutes later the second ever Barns Green 10km race started with over 550 runners. The 10km route includes about 6km of the half marathon route with a couple of new elements including an extra loop in the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School and a fast downhill to a new finish in the village. Local Horsham MP, Jeremy Quin acted as official starter for the Barns Green Half Marathon. The male winner of the half marathon race was Neil Boniface from Horsham Joggers with a time of 1 hour 10 minutes 15 seconds with Paul Navesey second and Kevin Rojas of Brighton & Hove City AC third. The women’s race was won by Bethan Male in a time of 1 hour 27 minutes 41seconds with Sue Fry of Hailsham Harriers second and Dani Tarleton from Arena 80 AC third. After the race, Neil Boniface, who won the inaugural 10k race last year said, “I am thrilled to have come home first. It is the third time I’ve won here. Last year I switched to the 10k as preparation for another race but it is good to be back running the half marathon. The course was great and the organisation as always very good”. Sunday’s 10k race was started by Wendy Buckingham representing St Catherine’s Hospice. The male race was won by Bernie Spannagl of Horsham Blue Star Harriers with a time of 33 minutes 11 seconds with Jamie Corbett of Worthing & District Harriers finishing second and Russ Mullen from Haywards Heath Harriers third. The winner of the Barns Green women’s 10k race was Kat Owens who completed the course in 40

minutes 42 seconds. Louise Clarke from Horsham Joggers was second, with Polly Adams from Royal Manor of Portland AC third. Once again the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k enjoyed excellent autumn weather and running conditions were very good for the athletes. On the day, 140 volunteers gave their time to help with car parking and marshalling and the many other jobs necessary to make sure everything ran smoothly and the runners enjoyed the experience. This unique village event raises a lot of money for charity and local sports clubs and societies. The official charity this year was once again St Catherine’s Hospice and this year’s event is expected to help raise almost £10,000 for the wonderful work that they do. Commenting on the event, Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, “I couldn’t be happier with the way that the day went. Launching the new 10km race last year was not easy and presented my committee with some testing challenges. However, we saw a 50% increase in runners from last year, the majority of whom were female competitors. There was a 13% increase in the number of runners in the half marathon which is also very pleasing. This will enable us to give donations to all the local clubs and societies that help us to stage the event and also boost the money that we can donate to our wonderful charity, St Catherine’s Hospice. I would like to thank our local residents for their great support and cooperation and understanding with regard to the road closures during the races.” Entries for next year’s Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k, with an early bird offer, are already open. The date is Sunday 30th September 2018. For further details visit the website barnsgreen-half.org.uk. Nigel Currie, Barns Green Half Marathon Committee

Contact the Elderly Older people in the area who are lonely on Sundays are being offered company

F

or older people who live alone, Sundays can be particularly long and difficult. A scheme run by the charity Contact the Elderly organises monthly tea parties for groups of older people aged 75 and above who would like some company on a Sunday afternoon. Members usually: •  live alone •  are generally well into the 80s and 90s •  are unable to get out without a little assistance •  are without friends or relatives nearby •  feel very lonely and live isolated lives •  are able to walk to a car with a walking frame or stick, assisted if necessary by a steadying arm. One Sunday a month each member is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is welcomed by a different host each month but the drivers remain the same so that, over time, acquaintances become friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. A warm welcome, a family home and meeting old friends and new provides older members with companionship and a vital link with the community from which they have become isolated. This simple idea is the essence of Contact the Elderly which has been running for over 50 years. All drivers and hosts are police checked and it is all free of charge. Gladys is 90 and has been a guest of Contact the Elderly for many years: “It seems that some folk have never heard of Contact. If they ask me about it I try to explain that small Contact groups are all over the country in towns and villages. Every group has an organiser and she arranges volunteers with cars. Next has to be arranged twelve venues (one for each

month) and a hostess who is willing for the group to meet at her house for a simple tea twice a year.” “A Contact group is kept small, 6 to 10 members, so that everyone can chat to everyone else. Each month on a Sunday afternoon, rain or shine, the drivers collect the members and take us for a little drive to where we are made welcome and have tea. There is a lot of talk and laughter during tea and somebody will tell us what they have been doing since our last meeting. “There is always something to look forward to: friends to meet, ideas to be exchanged. Time goes all too quickly but when we say goodbye we all feel that the loneliness has been lifted, that we have plenty of friends and kind people that really care and we all have another get-together to look forward to in a month’s time.” The established group in Horsham says it has space for a number of new guests to join and the charity is keen to raise awareness of the tea parties among the local community. Contact The Elderly’s Development Officer Julia Rivas said, “these tea parties give people a chance to get together with others and make new friends over tea and cake. They are the highlight of the month for many of our older guests and for some it is the only time they get out of the house for a social occasion. We would encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know someone who might benefit from it, to get in touch.” To find out more about joining your local Horsham group please contact Julia Rivas, Development Officer on (01273) 805451 or email julia.rivas@contact-the-elderly.org.uk. www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk. Important changes to your bin collections!

F

rom 5th February 2018 Horsham District Council will be rolling out changes to household bin collections across the district. There will still be a weekly collection service – recycling will be collected one week, and household waste collected the same day the following week. The garden waste collection service will continue on a fortnightly basis for those subscribed to the service. Those wishing to subscribe to the garden waste collection service should do so online at www.horsham.gov.uk/bins/garden-waste or telephone (01403) 733144. Application deadline of 30th November. Not all families are the same and people in the following categories might wish to apply for a larger household waste bin or an additional or larger recycling bin free of charge.* •  Medical needs •  Households with five or more permanent residents •  Households with three or more children in nappies. (Those who already have a dispensation for a larger green-top bin do not need to apply again.) You may also like to apply for a free larger or additional recycling bin*. If space is limited a smaller, reusable, recycling bag is also available to supplement the recycling bin.

*There will be a delivery charge of £5 for each additional or larger bin. Applications must be submitted by Thursday 30th November. Please apply using the online form at www.horsham.gov.uk/newbincollections Telephone: (01403) 733144 What happens next? Every household in the district will receive an information pack in January 2018 with further details about these changes, including when the change to collections start in your area and which bin you will need to put out each week. As with all other local authorities, Horsham District Council is under considerable pressure to increase levels of recycling and minimise the amount of household waste sent to landfill. Here in the Horsham district we currently recycle 44% of our waste – the highest in West Sussex. However, we need to meet the national recycling target of 50% by 2020. We ask all residents to think about how they might be able to reduce, reuse or recycle their household waste even more to help us reach the government target. For advice and tips, including a useful A to Z list of what can and can’t be recycled, visit our online pages at www.horsham.gov.uk/bins/ thinkbeforeyouthrow. Sarah Hogben Horsham District Council

I

f you have recently moved to Billingshurst or live alone and would like to just get out of your home sometimes, why not come along and join us for some fun packed social time, you would be so welcome. We meet alternate Mondays and currently have spaces at our very popular and friendly lunch club. We also have a community minibus so if you need transport we can pick you up and take you home for an all-inclusive price of £4 which includes lunch and tea & biscuits in the afternoon. Why not come along and see for yourself, and join in with our interesting and well planned programme ranging from interesting speakers, singing along with visiting musical groups, and fun quizzes to name just a few of the variety of activities we get up to. Christmas is of course a very special time with us; we have a full Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings and a good old Christmas sing-along with a local singing group. We would love to see you. Or… maybe you would like to join our team of volunteers and help

with serving the lunches and washing up, or assisting with the afternoon activities. Or, alternatively, we are always looking for cake and pudding makers as we pride ourselves with providing our Seniors with healthy and delicious home-cooked food. The other area we need help with is drivers for our minibus, without which many of our village Seniors would be unable to experience the benefits of the fantastic social interaction the Lunch Club provides for them. So, please give some thought to ways you may be able to help. We look forward to hearing from you. Just telephone Sandy Duck on (01403) 786146 or 07717 822804, or Sue King on 07729 857203. St Catherine’s Hospice celebrates an oar-some Dragon Boat Festival!

S

t Catherine’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival burst back into Tilgate Park on 10th September for an ‘oar-some’ day of free, family fun. The Worshipful Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Brian Quinn officially opened the event as crowds came out to cheer on more than 35 teams made up of local businesses including Horsham teams: Assurity Consulting, Brandon Build, Forza Doors, Harris Lord, Keysource and Thakeham. Speaking before the race Steve Mills from Assurity Consulting said, “It’s our third time taking part in Dragon Boats. It’s a great cause and we enjoy supporting St Catherine's as a local charity.” Traditional fundraising stalls like china smash, and a coconut shy encouraged people of all ages to donate money to their local hospice, while an inflatable pirate course, biscuit decorating and surf simulator kept younger visitors entertained. People enjoyed food from a range of vendors and drinks from Sussex Event Bars, an onsite bar that served a special Dragon Spritz and gave a percentage of its profit to St Catherine’s. On the lake, teams showed true team spirit as they battled it out in a series of races in Chinese Dragon Boats but it was Terry’s Paddlers who found their sea legs to be crowned the 15th Dragon Boat champions and take away this year’s trophy with a winning time of 59 seconds. Matt O’Leary, crew captain of Terry’s Paddlers said, “It’s been such an amazing day! I’m really impressed with the event. So much goes into it, and we’re really proud to walk away with this year’s trophy.” Coming in at second place was Assurity

Consulting and taking third place was Vines Beemer, last year’s champions. The winning teams were presented with medals and trophies by Terry O’Leary, Chair of Trustees at St Catherine’s. St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival is one of the hospice’s biggest annual fundraisers and is on target to raise £50,000 to help St Catherine’s provide expert end of life care to local terminally ill people and their friends and family, when life comes full circle. Vines of Gatwick proudly sponsored the festival alongside entering a team. Darren Buche, Mini Sales Executive at Vines said, “Once again, St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival was a funfilled and energetic day. It was fantastic to see so many people come out to show their support and an ideal chance for us, as a local business, to show our gratitude for the work St Catherine’s does to help terminally ill people in our local community. Every year it’s a pleasure to be involved, and if your business missed out this year get yourself on the list for next year. It really is an event not to be missed!’ Suzanne Davis, Philanthropy Coordinator at St Catherine’s, said, “We'd like to thank everyone who took part, volunteered or attended this year’s festival for helping us raise vital funds so we can continue to be there for people when they need us most.” To find out about future St Catherine’s events, or how you can support the hospice, visit www.stch.org.uk. Billingshurst Neighbourhood Watch – Why Not Join?

W

ith all the changes currently taking place in police forces across the country, Neighbourhood Watch has never been more relevant or necessary than it is today. Our community, whether real or virtual, relies more than ever on a close relationship between ourselves, the public and our local police. Our homes should be our refuge, a place to feel safe, kick off our shoes and relax with those most dear to us. However, the world is changing so rapidly in terms of how we live our lives we’ve become more isolated as we navigate our way through the everyday, and sometimes the not-so-everyday dangers of modern life. This is where Neighbourhood Watch comes in, by being watchful and sharing the messages that keep us safe. Sharing the information you are aware of with both the police and your neighbours is the best way of ensuring any potential threat to our way of life is kept to a minimum. There are those that say Neighbourhood Watch is just a lot of busybodies with nothing else to do but spy on their neighbours; nothing

could be further from the truth. We are about ensuring everyone in our community, from the very young to the very old, are as safe as we can help them be. Neighbourhood Watch is about protecting our homes, our community, and those we care about. We provide information about making our homes and outbuildings safer, we can give contact details for a wide range of issues ranging from worries about the young and old, to those telephone numbers you might want to report a crime or suspicious activity. We can provide street signs to let undesirables know they are entering an area where we look out for each other; door stickers to deter the majority of cold callers; and other material to show our community cares about and looks after each other. If you would like to know more about Neighbourhood Watch in Billingshurst, or would like to become a member of our Community Group, then you can contact me at Billingshurst.NHW@btinternet.com Steve Guzy, Billingshurst District Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator

We object Update: Boxal Bridge still under threat

W

est Sussex County Council has announced that they intend to replace Boxal Bridge and have placed the issue in their forward Plan for October. UPDATE: •  The bridge is safe and has passed the last 7 inspections (done every 2 years) and the next one will take place in 2019. •  The bridge appears on an 1836 map. Three independent Highways engineers agree it is in need of some attention but NOT REPLACEMENT. •  It is a community asset in the Kirdford Neighbourhood Plan and listed as a heritage asset in Chichester District plan. •  It is one of 4 bridges giving access to and from the village, two of which are listed. •  The petition organised by KKWG to save the bridge in 2015 called for it NOT to be demolished attracted 3,376 signatures and triggered a WSCC Committee meeting. •  At that meeting, WSCC adopted a resolution, October 16th, 2015 ‘that WSCC Highways work closely with the Kirdford and WG Parish Councils to explore the safest and most acceptable project for the future of the bridge, taking into account the rural environment as well as architectural and historical merit.’ •  Such close working has not happened. Both Parishes OBJECT as they have done since 2013

•  The current plan FOR REPLACEMENT is unacceptable. WSCC Highways has put Replacement of Boxal Bridge on its Forward Plan for October. The process by which their decision will be followed looks as though unless a Cllr objects in the period between 14th and 22nd October replacement will be confirmed but IF a Cllr objects it will then go forward to a meeting in November and after discussion left to the lead on Highways… who already supports the decision to demolish the bridge. This is despite three highways experts saying that it does not need replacing. Over 3,000 voices shouldn’t be ignored. Despite a peition of 3,376 signatures and a resolution adopted by WSCC on October 16th, 2015, that highways should work with the Parishes and come up with an acceptable plan… this has not happened. We are thus all amazed that part of the charm of Wisborough Green and Kirdford is being threatened and wildlife under attack. The beautiful stone arch Boxal Bridge is being schedued for demolition. The decision is being taken by just one man, Bob Lanzer, the cabinet member for highways and infrastructure. You can let him know and Richard Hammond of Highways Dept what you think about this being imposed against the wishes of both Parishes and local residents. Email: richard.hammond@westsussex.gov.uk or bob.lanzer@westsussex.gov.uk. Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair, KKWG. Tel: (01403) 700395

A Good Read November’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Plays About Britain – Craig Taylor How often do you hear someone complain that they never have time to read? Too often? Or are you guilty of this yourself? If so, Craig Taylor’s superb book is a godsend. The title is more or less an accurate description of the contents – although there are slightly fewer than a million of Taylor’s carefully crafted snapshots of British life: ‘dramatic haikus’, perhaps, as Richard Eyre suggests in his introduction. The format of each play is the same: a brief sentence to set the scene, then the dialogue takes over. The longest runs to three or four pages, the shortest to one sentence. A range of scenes is covered – from two women in a queue at a Surrey bank, to a farmer in Kent speaking on his mobile phone from a tractor, to a late night on Newcastle quayside. The characters are diverse too – young and old, drunk and sober, flippant and serious. However, it is the perfectly observed sharpness of speech that makes this book stand out. At first, you could believe that Taylor has merely been in the right place at the right time and recorded everything that he heard. Lines like, “‘I once took Diana Rigg’s coat – in her pocket was a packet of Polos. That’s an elegant mint!” and “There’s more to it all. More than Swansea” sound so authentic that

you believe in the speakers and their lives, however brief and insignificant their conversations seem to be. Some of the plays rely on a growing sense of unease – the nervous customer in the barber’s shop; others are out and out funny – two Wonder Women fighting in the street. Every ending is well judged and either rounds off the play with a ‘reveal’ or a cliff-hanger – always showing, never telling. Ideal for reading in short bursts or longer chunks. Well worth a look. The Complete Tales and Poems of Winniethe-Pooh – AA Milne The recently released film Goodbye Christopher Robin painted a less-than-rosy picture of the dysfunctional upper class Milne family. Yet the stories are still compellingly charming from the opening lines, “Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin.” Milne may have been a traumatised war veteran but his storytelling has so much warmth and depth. At times the tales are laugh-out-loud funny – Rabbit in particular makes me giggle every time he replies to a knock at the door – and children will quickly read along with you, even if some of the sentence structure and vocabulary is complex. Every child deserves to have this book read aloud to them at least once before they are six and I bet you anything you will be asked for it again, and again. The word classic is sometimes used lightly: here, it is truly deserved.

Remembrance Day / About the house

The Poppy Factory Have you ever wondered where your Poppy came from?

M

ajor George Howson was an engineer. He was a man of great energy and determination. He won the Military Cross for bravery in WWl. He was also the founder of The Royal British Legion Poppy factory. Through the work of Anna Guerin of France and Moina Michael of the USA, both very practical women who took Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae’s famous poem In Flanders Fields and devised a way of raising vital funds for wartime charities. The British Legion had been set up the year before and the very first French Poppy Appeal – using silk poppies made by war widows – had raised ÂŁ106,000, a huge amount in those days. In 1921 the first British Poppy appeal was held. In the first year the poppies were imported from France and there was huge demand as poppies quickly became the icons of remembrance. The Major made a connection: Remembrance Day needed poppies and wounded ex-soldiers needed work. In a letter to his parents he spoke of using a ÂŁ2,000 cheque he had been given to set up a factory ‘to give the disabled their chance’. He added that he felt the project would probably not be

successful but that he ought to attempt it anyway. He set up The Disabled Society in London with just five injured ex-servicemen, and in spite of his initial lack of optimism, in few years the workforce had grown to 350 men. He set up a sister factory in Edinburgh to supply poppies to Scotland, and the London factory moved to larger premises in Richmond-on-Thames in Surrey and was renamed The Poppy Factory. As time went on the needs of veterans changed. They wanted to work in their own communities, closer to their families and to use the many and varied skills they had acquired during their careers in the armed services, prior to becoming injured. In 2010, The Poppy Factory began to actively help disabled ex-Service men and women find the work they wanted in the places they wanted to be. It continues to build on its strong historical foundations to provide an employability service that supports hundreds of ex-Service personnel with varying health challenges into meaningful employment with businesses across the country every year. Little Tweeters! / About the house

Things that go bump in the night

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

T

he night was dark and stormy. Three men sat by the campfire. One man began a story. He said, “The night was dark and stormy. Three men sat…” No, no! That’s not right! But… The night was dark and windy. A silvery light intermittently created deep black shadows around the house, made darker and more dense when the clouds fled across the waxing moon, pursued by hounds of howling hungry wind. The light attempted to cling to the landscape but the shadows draping themselves around corners and across the grass succeeded in keeping everything dark. It was the last day of October. The candle inside a crudely carved 31st October. A little wind and pumpkin flickered with every gust of wind but remained doggedly alight, determined to keep the shadows at bay. In the tiny house, after turning off the cheerful warmth of the electric fire, she hurried to her comfortable bed. She snuggled into her quilt aware of the way it fitted around her neck sealing her body from the cold, and when she switched off the dim bedside lamp, the dark descended and her breathing slowed as she drifted off to sleep. Sleep was halted by a rat-tat-tat sound, followed by another, and another. She roused herself long enough to listen carefully as the acorns shaken by the wind reluctantly let go of their mother tree and landed on the tin roof of the shed. Turning over sleep beckoned her again. Another sound reached into her dreams, a shuffling whispering sound. Opening one eye she saw the outside light was on. After waiting a minute

or two for it to go out, believing it was just the wind, she realised it was still on. She threw off her quilt and tiptoed over to the window and raised the curtain. Nothing there but a fleeting shadow scuttling away and the light went out. Relieved she once more went back to the warmth of her quilt. Outside the clouds had nearly shrouded the struggling moonlight. Lurking in the shadows there was an even darker shadow. It moved silently and its eyes gleamed golden when a stray shaft of moonlight caught them. Inside she woke suddenly. It had become quite dark. There! She heard it again – a thump. She had no idea what it a lot of imagination… was. A shed door in the wind? She was sure she had shut them all when she came in for dinner knowing the wind would be getting up. A tree branch banging against another? She hoped not. More thumps followed. They weren’t regular like a door banging but they were loud enough to worry her. Reluctantly she crawled out of bed, and stumbled, coat flaps clutched around her, into the now very dark world. The feeble flickering light from her torch led her down to the shed. Heart thumping with horror-story fear she followed the torchlight. The noise became louder, then suddenly stopped as a dark shape turned its head toward her, and stepped forward to meet her. “Oh, Aaron!” Nanny yelled. “Do you have to bang your horns on the fence post in the middle of the night!” Yvonne Fleece

Barns Green Players present An Evening of Magic Booking now open for this Barns Green Village Hall fundraising event

B

arns Green Players are staging an Evening of Magic this December featuring professional magician, Paul Abbey plus a full support cast. Paul is a superb magician who is based in Hampshire. He is a very accomplished performer with many years’ experience. He has performed for Royalty and celebrities as well as captains of industry such as Sir Richard Branson and has also done extensive trade work for the likes of British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and the 2012 London Olympics. Paul will be performing for two nights – Friday 1st December and Saturday 2nd December at 8pm in the Barns Green Village Hall. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Village Hall extension. It is sure to be a lot of fun with lots of audience interaction and participation. Barns Green Players’ Chairman, Neale Francis commented, “We are delighted that we have been able to secure Paul Abbey who I know will put on a show that will entertain you and completely baffle you at the same time. He will be supported by some of the Barns Green Players who will be

singing and maybe even be doing a few of their own magic tricks. “The evening is designed to raise funds to help with the new Village Hall extension and all the proceeds from the two shows will go towards that. The Barns Green Players rely heavily on the Village Hall so were only too delighted to take this opportunity to raise some extra money for the new extension”. This will be another of Barns Green Players’ very popular ‘bring your own food’ shows where the audience sits at tables of eight and enjoys drinks brought to the tables from our licensed bar. (Please do not bring your own drinks.) Make sure you get your tickets and tables organised early for one of the performances and enjoy a really entertaining show. Victory for Weald Greenpower Car team

S

tudents from The Weald School Greenpower Car Team were celebrating in October as they won the International Final of the Formula 24+ category. The competition involves schools and other organisations making and racing electric cars. Qualifying competitions are held around the country all year with the grand final being held at Rockingham Raceway near Corby Northamptonshire in October. The final was won by The Weald’s ‘Bluebird’ car designed and built by John Woodhead and Clive Allen and driven by Sixth Form student Lucy Kirkby. The overall International Champion Team is decided by the car with most points in the two best qualifying races as well as the races at the final. The electric car runs on a single car battery and travels around 30 miles in the one-hour race. Driver Lucy Kirkby explained, “We were leading the qualification table going into the final race so we knew who we had to beat and stay ahead of. We managed to

overtake one of our leading challengers on the final corner of the final lap and realised the trophy was ours”. The school is a former winner of the Formula 24 category where drivers have to be younger than 16. The school’s other car, ‘The Purple Predator’, came 7th in this category having made it into the International final. Headteacher Peter Woodman commented, “We were thrilled to win the overall F24+ championship as it is trophy we have not won before. The final day was quite nail-biting as despite meticulous preparation, things can easily go wrong in the race. “The win is testament to the work the students and all our volunteer Mums and Dads have put in over a very long period of time.” Peter Woodman, Headteacher The Weald team with Bluebird and The Purple Predator. We use toys, puppets, items of interest or some drama to bring each story to life

The Weald School opens new buildings

T

he Weald School has officially opened a series of new buildings as part of an £11 million expansion and development. Jeremy Quin MP cut the ribbon to the new block on Friday 22nd September which includes a 450-seat canteen and 22 teaching rooms catering for mathematics and art. The school welcomed around 50 local community stakeholders for the event which included a tour of the new facilities. Headteacher Peter Woodman explained, “Our site has been developing over a period of years but some parts of their infrastructure date back 30-40 years. It has been fantastic to have these updated. We now cater for 1,700 students and the new facilities are completely fit for purpose and for the size of our community. We have not just built a new block but used the opportunity to refurbish a whole range of subject areas around the school. As maths and art have moved into our new block we have moved and improved other areas. We now have rebuilt PE changing rooms, additional music and drama and

photography areas, a bespoke pastoral support suite, extra science labs, special needs and sixth form study areas. Our new media suite even contains a TV studio which will allow us to broadcast across the school into all classrooms.” As part of the opening ceremony, all who were involved were thanked. Mr Woodman noted, “Our main contractor Sunninghill has done a magnificent job with the building being completed with minimal disruption to learning, to a very high standard, on time and on budget”. The new building was open to parents and students for the school’s Open Evening on Thursday 28th September. Current parents will have an opportunity to have tours around the new build in the coming weeks. Izzy Lewis, Events & Communications Manager

Christs Hospital Choral Society Winter Performances

C

hrists Hospital Choral Society will perform Rossini’s ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’ on 4th November at St. Mary’s Church, the Causeway, Horsham starting at 7.30 pm. New Musical Director Alex Hodgkinson has injected lots of laughter into the Thursday evening rehearsals, and apart from reaching this enjoyment level, he has got the choir into excellent shape for the concert. The words, musical parts, dynamics are all coming together to produce a treat on the night. Although Gioachino Rossini wrote the fugue in 1863 for just 12 singers and an accompaniment of two pianos and one harmonium (the low number of performers explains the ‘petite’ in the title) he later wrote an orchestral version which included a soprano aria – but he never heard this performed as the Pope refused permission for female singers to perform in the church. After the November concert the choir will go straight into rehearsals for their Christmas Concert on Thursday 14th December at the Chapel, Christ’s Hospital. There will be a brilliant range of carols, both well-known and unfamiliar to help you into the Christmas atmosphere. Tickets for the Little Solemn Mass on Saturday 4th November at St Mary’s at 7.30 pm cost £11 (children £5) from (01403) 247434 or on the door. For further information please visit www.chchoralsoc.org, or contact Esther Clark on (01403) 272978.

Guy Fawkes Night / Out and about

Firefighters say: ‘Fireworks & Bonfire evenings should be fun, not dangerous!’ See our tips and advice below to have a safe and enjoyable bonfire evening FIREWORKS: Having fireworks at home can be great fun, as long as they are used safely. Figures show more children than adults get hurt by fireworks. Over the past few years over 350 pre-school children, some only a year old, were treated in hospital for fireworks injuries. Did you know that sparklers burn five times hotter than cooking oil? Sparklers are not toys and should never be given to a child under five. Only one person should be in charge of fireworks. If that’s you, then make sure you take all the necessary precautions. Read the instructions in daylight and don’t drink any alcohol until they’ve all been discharged. Make your preparations in advance, and in daylight. On the night, you will need: •  A torch •  A bucket or two of water •  Eye protection and gloves •  A bucket of soft earth to put fireworks in •  Suitable supports and launchers if you’re setting off catherine wheels or rockets.

NADFAS change of name The worldwide association known as NADFAS, National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society has changed its name to The Arts Society. With groups mainly in the UK, but also in Spain and as far away as New Zealand and Australia, it is felt that the simpler name will be more memorable and much easier to understand. Each individual society holds a talk once a month, given by inspiring and distinguished speakers on any subject connected with the Arts. Special Interest Days, Visits and Holidays are also organised by each group. Accordingly, West Sussex DFAS will be known as The Arts Society – West Sussex. As Village Tweet readers who have attended talks will know, it is a very friendly society and this year it has had talks on a variety of subjects, from Grayson Perry to Jane Austen. The society has an exciting calendar of events planned for 2018. This includes talks on Sicillian Renaissance and how Art and Design helped the cause of the Suffragettes. There will be visits to Freemasons’ Hall and the Soane Museum. Meetings are held in Fittleworth Village Hall on the 1st Tuesday of each month followed by tea or coffee. The annual membership is £45 and visitors are most welcome for £5. If you would like to become a part of a group of friendly art enthusiasts, please contact Jackie Buckler email jackiebuckler@live.com or call (01903) 411086.

BONFIRES: Bonfires need a lot of organising and can be a hazard. Many displays are a great success without one. If, after careful consideration, you do decide to have a bonfire, make one person responsible for it, from early planning to final clearing up. Don’t site a bonfire too near your display or firework storage area. Never use flammable liquids like paraffin or petrol to get it going as this can result in uncontrolled spread of fire or explosion. Never put fireworks on a bonfire, even if they’re dud. Don’t burn dangerous rubbish (e.g. aerosols, paint tins or foam-filled furniture). Remove any rubbish from your bonfire area in advance so there’s nothing that can be thrown onto the fire on the night. Stay safe and have fun! Next month’s piece is the last one of the year and will be a round up of the year and to wish you all a Merry Christmas! But it’s a bit early to start saying that! Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts (NADFAS) has changed its name to

The Arts Society Accordingly, the South Downs Decorative and Fine Arts Society (whose entries have regularly appeared in the What’s On pages) has changed its own name to The Arts Society – South Downs. Its website is now www.theartssocietysouthdowns.org.uk. As readers will know, members are treated to a wide range of interesting lectures every 1st Wednesday (except Jan and Aug) in Fittleworth Village Hall at 10.30am. If you have not come to our meetings why not join us for a fun, sociable and informative meeting. Annual membership is £40. Visitors are most welcome at £5.

Community

The Times They Are A-Changin’ John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

haven’t the foggiest idea who, but someone once said “It’s been a funny old year’. I concur completely. A super spring, although one wind-blown frosty night caused a lot of damage to the plums and apples in our area, followed by what can only be described as a very dodgy summer with the sun never sure whether to even bother to get up and blustery showers forever knocking at the door. The weather girl on the tele constantly telling us that it was all down to the direction the Jet Stream had decided to take. Apparently, whenever it moved south of the Isle of Wight we were presented with a low pressure system which duly offered us the changeable results. I can only say that I would like to express a suggestion to the Jet Stream that it might try the area north of Viking in future and if it can get beyond the Faeroes even better! To change the subject, I have become aware this year of a movement in the animals that share the land and woodlands with us. I guess it’s been happening slowly over many years, but this summer it has become far more apparent. There has been a distinct alteration in the habits of some of our wild friends, and I don’t mean the blokes down the pub on a Saturday night! I believe some of these changes have come about through the alterations we are making in the way we use and farm our land. Conservation has been moved to the forefront of our thinking and the care and protection of many of the creatures of our farms and woodlands has played high in the planning that has gone into our farming calendar. Perhaps as a result we are seeing creatures that have not graced our fields in any quantity for many a long year. As an example of what I mean, where are all the rabbits? For years they have, in broad daylight, spent their day chewing the grass and herbage on the headlands around the farm. Only diving for cover if they spied you walking around while at the same time completely ignoring any tractor that should chug by. They never seemed to associate a human to this noisy beast at all. Then I noticed, this year especially, they disappeared. Masses of lovely

40

grass and no rabbits to be seen. Drive in to the yard at night though, and as the headlights illuminate the pasture beyond, there they are. Masses of them. So what’s changed, why this sudden alteration in their habits? Then it struck me. Just a few weeks ago walking over the banks of the reservoir I stopped to watch and listen to some creatures that have suddenly become very welcome and beautiful members of the farms fauna. A pair of buzzards. In fact, there are several pairs around the area now, their cries sounding almost alien to the ear, as if lifted straight out of a jungle setting. Are these the culprits? Have the rabbits reverted to their natural nocturnal habits now that a traditional hunter has returned to the skies above them? If this is so, what other effects has our new found awareness generated? Does this carry through to other creatures in our countryside? Many birds of prey that were very seldom seen are once more increasing in numbers, and I do wonder if it is something that we shall have to watch as time goes by. Certainly many birds like the magpie and the jay now visit the garden regularly when they once would never come near to habitation. Egg stealers by nature, they must put a strain on the nesting birds in the hedges and bushes around the garden. I have a suspicion too that my birdfeeders, which seem to empty daily at quite an alarming rate, are also the site of ‘meals on wings’ for the sparrowhawks who sit in the oak tree beside the garden fence eyeing up the menu of the day. I have referred before to this balancing of nature that is so delicate and so easily spoilt. We have, for many years, been responsible for terrible damage to the environment around us. Completely unknowingly, though sometimes through sheer stupidity, we have upset this balance and as a result this creature or that creature has suffered. Now we are starting to correct some of those errors I hope that we look more carefully at the reaction that some of those changes can bring. To quote that lovely old saying, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water’. So, to get back to my original thought, what direction has that blasted Jet thingy gone? Remember Remember your pets this November!

regarding the use of sedatives. Make sure your dog is well exercised earlier in the day before the fireworks get started and make sure that during the evening there are no doors left open that a frightened dog or cat could bolt out of. Keep cats safely indoors as much as possible during firework season, again make a cosy and safe hiding place and do not try to force the cat to come out if it doesn’t want to. Put extra litter trays down in the house and make sure doors and windows are kept closed so they cannot escape. Small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs can become very frightened too. If possible move them inside where the noise will not be quite as loud. Provide plenty of extra bedding for your pets to burrow under and feel more secure and cover the hutch with a blanket or light tarpaulin to cut out the flashes but be careful not to block ventilation. Horses too can be a challenge; some may not be bothered much at all (luckily mine fall into this camp) but some can become very stressed indeed. There are herbal calmers on the market that can help the horse to relax but again speak to your vet about sedatives if your horse is really upset by fireworks. Decide whether to stable your horse or leave it in the field. It is sensible to keep your horse in its familiar environment, in its normal routine, with any companions to make it feel secure. If it is usually stabled, keep it stabled. If it is normally out in the field, keep it there as long as it is safe, secure and not close to the firework display area. Playing music on a radio positioned outside the stable can often mask sudden noise, distract attention and be soothing. Check if there will be a bonfire near your yard. If there is, make sure you have an emergency fire procedure in place. If you have any doubts, talk to your local fire safety officer. Hopefully you will all have a safe Bonfire night. irework season is here again and although many of us humans enjoy a good firework display many pets don’t. Some are terrified and many become unsettled and upset due to the bangs and flashes. Firework season extends well before and after 5th November, so if you have a pet that is scared by fireworks this can be a very anxious time for you as an owner as well. Keep an eye on the local press and social media to keep informed of any public displays taking place locally so you can be prepared to deal with your pet. . Make sure cats and dogs are wearing a collar with an ID tag and that their microchip details are up-todate so if the worst happens and they do run off you will hopefully be reunited more quickly. There are many ways we can help our pets. For cats and dogs make sure they have a safe hiding place within the home. This area should be established a few weeks before the firework season starts so your pet associates the den with being a safe and restful place it can retreat to. Cover a dog crate with a blanket to create a safe den area, put your pet’s favourite treats inside – something such as a treat ball or a Kong – to distract them from the noises outside, play a radio or have the television on so the bangs will be less noticeable to the pet. Desensitisation CDs are available and these can help get your pet used to the noise of fireworks, start with the volume very low and gradually increase it as the pet becomes used to the noise. During the firework season keep curtains closed as the flashes can also cause some pets to become stressed. Although it may seem like a logical thing to do try not to make too much fuss of your cat or dog if they become anxious as this can actually compound the fear, so try to act as normally as possible otherwise your pet will pick up on your anxiety. Distract dogs with toys but don’t try to force play. A Thunder shirt can help calm canine anxiety by providing a comforting pressure on the dog’s torso, Pheromone collars and sprays can also help the dog feel calmer; make sure you read the instructions to get the best out of the product. For those that are truly terrified it would be advisable to seek a vet’s advice

National Tree Week

N

ational Tree Week is 25th November3rd December, marking the start of tree-planting season. Considering that most of us in the UK have fairly small plots it is surprising how much we love our trees. The trouble is we’re not always terribly good at choosing them. How many times have you driven through a housing estate and observed an enormous weeping willow or an enormous pine tree completely obscuring a front garden? It can be tricky deciding what sort of tree to plant on a small, suburban plot but there are plenty of candidates. Generally trees up to 8 or 10 metres are considered suitable. The best urban trees offer year-round interest. Varieties of Acer Palmatum are rather lovely. They are elegant trees which have attractive green or purple foliage and colour beautifully in the winter. For my money Amalanchier Lamarckii is about as hardworking a tree as you’ll come across. During March and April it produces a frothy show of white flowers, then in June these are replaced by attractive deep purple, and supposedly edible fruits (I’ve never tried them). Then, when autumn arrives the tree pulls out all the stops and bursts into fiery colour. If you only have room for one tree then an Amelanchier won’t let you down. Another hard worker is Sorbus hupehensis

var. obtusa. This tree has a pretty shape and is attractive throughout the year. In the late spring it is covered in white blossom which is followed by masses of dark pink berries. The bluegreen leaves turn red in the autumn. It’s just my opinion of course but without at least one tree, a garden can seem flat and a little dull. Trees provide structure and height but are also a haven for birds and insects, which in turn add colour and life. Why not plant a tree during Tree Week? Our guide below has some helpful tips. Rachel Leverton

How to plant a tree Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball. Make up a mixture of half compost and half soil from the hole. Put a few inches of this mix at the bottom of the hole. Trees need support so drive a support stake into the hole at one edge. This needs to be done before the tree is planted or you risk damaging the roots. Tip the tree from its container and loosen the roots a little. Place it into the hole and fill in with the soil and compost mixture. Firm it down with your heel. Use proper straps to secure the tree to the post. Water well!

Station Road Gardens win Silver!

tation Road Gardens has received a Silver Gilt award in the Small Park of the Year category at the South East In Bloom Awards 2017. Station Road Gardens have been steadily developed since their inception in 2008. The Directors, members and volunteers of the Friends Of Station Road Gardens, with the support and assistance of the Parish Council have formed a dedicated team. The Parish Council are the landowner and the organisation which entered the Gardens in the competition. They have worked collectively to regenerate a redundant sports ground into a well designed garden and park for all to enjoy. The award ceremony was held at The Copthorne Hotel Effingham Park on 20th September. The Silver Gilt Award was presented on the day to Stuart Sexton, one of the directors of the group, and Greg Burt, representing Billingshurst Parish Council. (See photo on page 53. Ed.) The Silver Gilt award represents a high standard entry which met the judging criteria and objectives, and included sections of exceptionally high standard. The gardens were judged to generally meet sustainable and quality thresholds. However, it was noted that the

gardens were not yet entirely consistent throughout the area. The judges indicated that the gardens have potential to be a Gold Medal winner in the future. On behalf the directors, I would personally like to thank the volunteers and local businesses that have contributed to helping us to achieve our aims and objectives in providing a very special community space for all ages to be able to visit and enjoy. The gardens are now used extensively by the community and Lark In The Park was recently held here; an event which proved to be very successful and is planned to be repeated next year. In the future we intend to continue to improve and maintain the gardens and our aim and objectives are focused towards winning Gold in the future. In order to reach this level we will need to continue with the voluntary help supplied by Community Service Schemes and volunteers from our community. So anyone who has a few hours to spare please come forward and volunteer to help with this extremely worthwhile project. Keith Brown, Chairman, Friends of Station Road Gardens (Billingshurst) Ltd

Christmas Tree Makes a Comeback! Last year saw a vast improvement to the village’s Christmas Lights and as a result, the Council received numerous positive comments. Over the past few years, parishioners have mentioned that they miss seeing a Christmas Tree on Billingshurst Village Green so we are delighted to announce that as a result of sponsorship from Southern Water, Riverdale Developments and J Devine Civil Engineering, officers will be liaising with the Council’s contractor Light Angels to have a tree back on the Green again this Christmas. It is hoped that additional sponsorship can be secured in the future to extend the decorative lighting further along the High Street.

Success for Station Road Gardens! Parish Clerk Greg Burt and Stuart Sexton of the Friends of Station Road Gardens attended the South & South East in Bloom Awards Ceremony in September collecting a Silver Gilt Certificate for the Gardens in the Best Small Park category. Greg commented, “For our very first entry, this is a fabulous result and a tribute to the hard work of all the volunteers, staff and contractors who keep this site looking so good. As a past In Bloom Coordinator for Alton, it was great to catch up with some Bloomin’ old friends too!” The picture this month shows Stuart and Greg collecting the certificate from BBC Radio Sussex & Surreys’ Dig It! presenter, Joe Talbot.

Money! Money! Money! The Parish Council has a modest Grants Budget to help local charities, and not-for-profit groups. So, if your good cause operates in Billingshurst or provides a service to those who live in the Parish, and needs a few pounds to help with a new project, please consider applying for a grant; applications can be made at any time of the year. Please visit the website noted at the bottom of the page, click on Council, scroll down to Council documents where you will find more details and an application form.

Do you have time to volunteer in the Billingshurst Police Office? Sussex Police are still looking for volunteers to help with an administrative role in the Police Office based in the Billingshurst Centre in Roman Way. The volunteer role consists of answering the telephone, data entry on the Police computer, providing a point of contact on the front counter, filing and relaying

information from the public to the Neighbourhood Policing Teams. For more information, or to find out how you can apply, please contact PCSO Adrian Bell at Adrian.Bell@sussex.pnn.police.uk or telephone 07912 892978. Alternatively, you can visit the Sussex Police website sussex.police.uk/jobs/volunteers/ volunteer-vacancies for more information.

Lights on in West Sussex If you are aware of footway or street lighting which isn’t working, please report it to SSE Enterprise Lighting via their ‘Lights On In West Sussex’ website www.lightsoninwestsussex.co.uk or by telephoning their Customer Service Team on 0800 048 2435. You will need the column number of the faulty light and the road name. This is an excellent service and easily accessible for all residents.

Our Community Volunteers – Vernon Jennings

I

n 1997 the committee for the Barns Green Half Marathon (see page 12) thought the event had run its course (no pun intended). Begging to differ, Vernon Jennings, together with Chris and Penny Simpson, took over the running of the event, which has gone from strength to strength ever since, attracting 2,000 runners in 2017 (and thus doubling the village’s population for a brief three hours), as well as raising much-needed funds for good causes locally. Vernon’s role as Chairman of the Marathon was one of the main reasons that he was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2015, but he is quick to point out that awards of this kind are always given to those who are merely part of a much larger team, and cites the many volunteers, supporters and others, without whom the event would not happen at all. “I don’t know if I’m any different from anyone else, really,” he adds. Vernon is not a runner himself, but played badminton at County level, first for Surrey and then in Sussex, later coaching and managing other badminton teams. He has lived in Barns Green since his children were born, and he and his wife, Ann, had a smallholding which enabled them to live

with a degree of self-sufficiency. He worked as a building and topographical surveyor and concedes that his background as a self-employed worker has probably helped him to ‘sell’ the event when necessary to potential sponsors and supporters, and to get on with the many people involved. Vernon’s other role is acting as Governor at Muntham House School for the past thirty years, including a stint as Chairman of the Board for six years. He is tremendously proud of the school which specialises in educating boys with challenging behaviour. In fact, it was through raising funds for the Muntham House Football Team that he first started helping out with the Half Marathon. “In village life you do seem to get involved with far more things than you would in a town,” he muses, and in Barns Green, with its numerous organisations and tightly-knit community, it is probably inevitable. “In any case,” he concludes, “I’ve loved doing it. It hasn’t been a chore.” Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please email Pippa: pppclv@spektrum.demon.co.uk
