T

he big two events in the area this month are the annual Billingshurst Firework Display on the 17th at Jubilee Fields, traditionally held early to ‘beat the rush’ but no less spectacular for that. And then, on the 31st, it’s Halloween of course, bringing a wonderful spectacle to the villages with ghoulishly lit pumpkins and spookily dressed children. Once Halloween is over, and with the nights well and truly drawn in, thoughts will turn to Christmas. If your business is planning something special for Christmas – pubs and restaurants spring to mind – or maybe you wish to offer Christmas Gifts or Vouchers to your customers – be sure to contact Village Tweet to advertise in November and December. Pumpkin Soup METHOD

Perfect for Halloween!

1. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently fry the onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add the pumpkin or squash to the pan with the cumin, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden. 2. Pour the stock into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the pumpkin or squash is very soft. Pour the double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. For an extravelvety consistency you can now push the soup through a fine sieve into another pan. 3. While the soup is cooking heat the remaining 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the lardons until deep golden brown. Add chopped chilli and a few small sage leaves to taste, then cook for a few mins more until they too are tinged with colour. Reheat the soup if needed, season to taste, then serve scattered with the lardon garnish. Note: Halloween pumpkins are bred for size rather than flavour. If you want to use a Halloween pumpkin drizzle the pumpkin pieces with olive oil first, mixing them with the cumin and roasting them in the oven on Gas 6/200°C for 20-30 minutes. Then follow the recipe as above. Roasting brings out the maximum flavour.

Preparation time: 20 minutes. Cooking time: 25 minutes (If roasting pumpkin add 20-30 minutes). Serves 6

WW2 Evacuee

From London to West Sussex Recollections of Brian Thompson, Wartime Evacuee – Part 4 Continued from last month… ost able-bodied people had to be in a job that benefited the War Effort. My mother worked in the accounts department of the NAAFI (Navy, Army and Air Force Institute), the canteen to the armed forces, which qualified her for war work. My father was called up into the RAF and was posted to Vancouver Island in Canada for the duration of the war. He was an engine fitter working with Flying Training Command. We didn’t see him again until 1945. Well, we drifted on like this, the Shannons and me, until 1942 when they went back to London. I think there had been a lull in the bombing and their parents thought it was safe for them to go back home. They collected them in a motorcycle and sidecar and strangely I don’t remember feeling sorry that they were going. We had lived together, played together, gone to school together and slept in the same bed for three years but that was how life was then. You played the cards you were dealt and got on with life. It would be another 18 months before my time came to go home but I didn’t know that then. I was happy in my own company and never felt lonely but I had become insular, self-contained. I didn’t feel the need for anyone; I was content within myself just waiting for the day when I could go home and start my proper life again. I had been treated well by both the Perrys and the Londons but without the love that a child needs – how could they give me that? They were just ‘minding’ me until the war ended and that’s how it felt to me, everything was temporary. Then it happened. Sometime in 1943 or maybe 1944 my mother wrote a letter telling me I could come home. I have no idea what triggered it off. Had I done something wrong and the Londons wanted me to leave? Did my mother decide that she couldn’t live without me anymore? I have no idea but it didn’t matter, I was GOING HOME to start my life again. She came down on the train, caught the bus to ‘Hinkhurst’, collected me and my meagre belongings waved goodbye to the Londons and we were gone. That night I went to bed in my own room for the first time in five years. What a mistake! My return home coincided with the heaviest bombing since 1940. Every night huge squadrons of German bombers came over London, it was too dangerous to live in the house at night so

M

8

after tea we would go down the Anderson shelter that we had semi-buried in the garden and try to sleep through the noise of the bombs dropping and the Ack-Ack returning gunfire. In the morning before school (I had returned to my old primary school) I would roam the streets collecting shrapnel and take it to a collecting point (again part of the war effort), see which houses had been destroyed overnight and then go to school. A little different from the life I had at Brooks Green. Then in June 1944 the Germans unleashed a new weapon: the V1 Flying Bomb or Doodlebug as we called it. It was a jet-powered unmanned aircraft filled with high explosive with a fuel tank calibrated to run out over London. When the engine stopped you had 15 seconds to get to the shelter. Not understanding the danger we kids loved them, it was like a grown up game of ‘Chicken’ and we would stand outside the shelter watching each pass overhead, wondering if the engine would stop. If the engine did stop you didn’t see us for dust. The RAF soon found a way to beat these machines by either shooting them down or flying beside them and tipping them over with their wingtips. Spoilsports! In September 1944 Germany retaliated with a new threat, the V2 Rocket. These were much more terrifying. Being supersonic they would arrive without warning with a huge explosion causing enormous damage. This was the only time that I remember being frightened in my life. Well I have gone on far too long. We survived the war and whether evacuation was the answer for the many thousands of children like me I am not too sure. I am now 82 and looking back I see that I have had many acquaintances in my life but very few real friends even though I married and went on to have six children of my own. Does it have anything to do with being evacuated? Was my character formed in those days at ‘Hinkhurst’ when although I was with people I was alone. It’s all a bit too deep for me – you work it out. After the war I never had any contact with the Perrys, the Londons or John and Pat Shannon which saddens me sometimes. What happened to them all remains unknown. From London to West Sussex, the story continues…

B

ack in April I received an email from Geoff Bell, current owner of ‘Hinkhurst’. Geoff told me of his encounter with one of his cottage’s wartime occupants, Brian Thompson, and asked me if I thought the story would be of interest to Village Tweet readers. I am sure, having now read all four parts of Brian’s story, you agree it most certainly deserved to be published. (If you missed any, you can read it on our website.) Brian’s final paragraph was poignant: “After the war I never had any contact with the Perrys, the Londons or John and Pat Shannon which saddens me somewhat.” On 1st August I received an email which I have permission to quote from… “Dear Sir, I have today read the very nostalgic Part 1 of your Wartime Evacuee feature, passed on to me by a friend who lives in West Sussex, a Village Tweet Kirsty and reader. Nostalgic as I am the fouryear-old Kirsty from the estate cottage at Floodgates, West Grinstead. “The surname of the Perry family was, in fact ‘Pirie’ – an understandable mistake. “I’m glad Brian recalls my mother as ‘a kindly lady’; I think she always tried to be. But her father, as mentioned in Brian’s reminiscence, was in fact, my father’s uncle – my lovely Uncle Alf – who lived with us for a number of years both at Floodgates and when we moved to Berkshire. In fact, I did not know either of my grandfathers. “Yes, rabbits and rabbiting, and the keeping of ferrets (which my mother loathed!), formed a prominent part of those years. “I was so pleased to be reminded of Brian’s surname, as I couldn’t recall it, but the sister and brother who arrived at our home around the same time were Pat and John Shannan. We all parted company early in the war, on our removal. “Brian might be interested in the following excerpt from my very amateur autobiography produced for my family in my seventieth year. (I ‘celebrated’ my eightieth recently.)… “‘Most of my life has been spent in rural locations. At the outbreak of war evacuees soon joined our family, and I was proud to lead them through stinging nettles to the outside privy, impressing on them that my sturdy legs were hardened to such problems. Despite our contrasting backgrounds and considerable age difference, it was fun to have brother and sister John and Pat, together with a very homesick lone

boy Brian, as playmates.’ “Reading Brian’s reminiscences it’s hard for me to think of him as ‘the elderly gentleman’, but we can’t argue with facts, I’m afraid! “Sincere good wishes for the continued success of your most interesting magazine.” Kirsty Adlard (née Pirie), Nottinghamshire. I immediately forwarded Kirsty’s email to Brian and Geoff and I am delighted to be able to tell you that Kirsty and Brian are now busily exchanging emails! As if this wasn’t delightful enough, a few days before this issue went to press I received a call from a local gentleman, David Shannan, who informed me that his father was the John Shannan who had featured in Brian’s story! (Brian’s misspelling of the surname is of course entirely forgiveable.) John still lives locally; contact details have been passed on to Brian. The publication of Brian’s story Mackie, 1939 almost never happened, as an extract from Brian’s first email to Kirsty relates… “Whenever I was driving through Coolham [Brian settled in West Chiltington after the war] I would find myself unconsciously turning right at the crossroad where the old school I attended used to be (It is now converted into a house as is the ‘Goods’ shop opposite) and making the short detour to Brooks Green. I would turn down Emms Lane, and at a snail’s pace would drive past ‘Hinkhurst’ first one way, then back the other, never daring to stop or make contact with whoever lived there, much as I wanted to. This didn’t happen just the once but dozens of times. “Then, one day, about 30 years later, on one of my crawl pasts I saw a lady working in the garden [Geoff’s wife]. I must have been in a daring or adventurous mood that day because I stopped the car, walked up to the gate and said, ‘Hello, I used to live in this house during the war as an evacuee from London.’ I think it took her a bit by surprise but she smiled and said, ‘You must come in and meet my husband.’” “And so it was I met Geoff Bell, a lovely man with a passion for local history. We chatted for some time about the people who lived there in the 1940’s and the events taking place at that time. He showed me some old photographs of the London family that he had found in the loft. I took my leave feeling elated that I had made contact and relived a bit of my childhood.” And the rest, as they say, is history! Grahame Pearson, Editor, Village Tweet

Fashion Trends for Autumn

W

ay back in March the world’s fashion gurus got together and presented their ideas for this autumn’s fashion trends. There seems to be something for everyone, so read on to decide who you plan on being this autumn! First off, if you went 70s last season, there’s no need to ditch the clothes currently lining your closet! 70s is still very much in, so hang on to your flares and your ankle flashing trousers and for a truly upto-date look throw in a folksy printed floral dress, fringed waistcoat, corduroy dungarees and a peasant blouse. Suede and patchwork knits are the fabrics to go for, and the poncho is back as the season’s key piece! You can also expect to see more retro with an 80s revival. Look out for power shoulders, ruffles, giant cuffs and big retro belts. Colour block knits and rainbow colour combos along with vivid, graphic patterns in bold colours are on their way, while jewel-toned Lurex is the party fabric of the season. Expect lots of glitter and sequins too on your special nights out! It looks like the experts are expecting a cold end to the year, with warm, fuzzy coats being the order of the day. From curly sheep gilets to sumptuous shearling overcoats, the faux fur fluff factor is offering lots of tactile fun this autumn

and winter. Add a giant scarf to complete the look and you’re sure to keep warm as well as stylish. If fur isn’t your thing, you can still look and feel red hot in a luxurious quilted jacket or an overcoat trimmed with top stitching and big buttons. Both are in vogue this season. High necks are back! Call them what you will – polo necks, turtle necks or roll necks – the higher the neckline, the better! Pair them up with anything from dungarees to a glitzy mini dress or mannish tailored suit and you’re sure to be up there as one of the season’s trend setters. Think outside the box, and conjure up new ways to layer what’s already in your wardrobe for an up-to-the-minute look. Polos are ideal for this. Think polo, plus shirt, plus coat and you’re on your way to creating one of the new looks for autumn! Finally, how does a bit of gothic romance grab you? Moody lace, high ruffle necklines, frills and luxurious embellishments teamed up with floorskimming lengths of sheer fabric will certainly give you that ‘lady is a vamp’ look. Add deep, berry coloured lips and piled up hair and there’ll be no resisting your dark glam appeal! Have fun as you dress up this autumn! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Pumpkins at the ready… Halloween: Saturday 31st October

T

here are big tubs of pumpkins outside the supermarkets, along with costumes, fake blood and multi-packs of sweets in the aisles. Halloween is almost upon us. But why do we celebrate it, when did trick or treating start, and what’s the point of carving pumpkins? As many people know, Halloween is short for All Hallows’ Eve. All Hallows’ Day (also known as All Saints’ Day) was an important occasion in the early Christian calendar and is still recognised by many Christians today. It is a national holiday in some predominately Catholic countries and is seen as a time to recognise and remember saints. It is believed that many Halloween traditions pre-date Christianity, and actually date back to the ancient Gaelic festival Samhain, which was held to mark the transition from harvest time to winter. Samhain was seen to be a time when the boundaries between worlds, particularly those of the living and the dead, were loosened, enabling spirits to cross through into our world. Bonfires were lit to cleanse the air and offer protection. People would often dress up as evil spirits in order to appease the ‘real’ spirits into not harming them, their families or their livestock. The ‘evil witch’ may have its roots in the Pagan goddess, The Crone, who was celebrated at Samhain for her wisdom and nurture of the Earth. In the Middle Ages, poor people would visit homes, offering to pray for the dead on All Soul’s Day (2nd November), in exchange for food. It is

likely this is where trick or treating started though some think it may be related to ‘guising’, a tradition where children would dress up – in disguise – and perform a song, dance, or other entertainment in exchange for a sweet treat. Pumpkin carving is believed to date back to the 1800s. Originally, turnips were carved and a candle placed inside. It appears that these lanterns served numerous purposes: to frighten spirits away; to guide travellers home safely in a time before streetlights were commonplace. Pumpkins started to replace turnips when Irish immigrants took their Halloween traditions with them to America. There, pumpkins were easier to acquire there than turnips, and soon became more popular as they are usually larger and much easier to carve! In recent years, pumpkin carving has become something of an art form, with elaborate designs often replacing simple grotesque faces. Black cats, spiders and bats are common Halloween symbols, and likely relate to the idea of a witch’s ‘familiar’ – an animal that was said to be a demon in disguise. Halloween is now celebrated in numerous countries across the globe, although it is particularly popular in the United States. Samhain itself is also still celebrated by pagans and wiccans around the world. Kate Duggan

Do I Need a Flu Jab?

ost of us know by now that certain groups of people should visit the GP for a flu jab: the elderly, diabetics, asthmatics etc. But pharmacists will tell you that even if you don’t fall into one of the categories above a flu jab is still a sensible precaution – and one that they can administer: safely, quickly and cheaply. But why would a healthy person request a flu vaccine? Well, seasonal flu is a deeply unpleasant illness. It generally requires a week or so off work to recover and can trigger other conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia. The average person with flu infects one or two other people through sneezing, coughing and touch. If you work with the general public, in a shop for example, you are more at risk of being exposed to the virus so you might consider a flu jab a

16

Health and wellbeing worthwhile investment. A business owner may consider the impact a week off sick would have on his business and opt to protect himself or herself for that reason. Children are much more likely to pick up and pass on bugs as they are in such close proximity to each other all day. For this reason teachers and parents might think it wise to have a jab. Unless you fall into one of the at-risk categories you will have to be vaccinated, but it’s inexpensive and many pharmacists administer the vaccine on their premises so you won’t have to book an appointment with your GP or take time off work. Flu jabs are generally safe unless you have an allergy to eggs or have had a previous allergic reaction to a shot. So discuss protecting yourself with your pharmacist today. Sarah Davey

Dyspraxia Awareness Week 11th-17th October

D

yspraxia is also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder, and occurs in both adults and children. It can affect fine and gross motor coordination. Those with the condition are often late learning to walk, stand, sit and roll and will find other standard developmental activities such as running, jumping or catching a ball more difficult. Many also experience difficulties with articulation, speech, perception and thoughts, leading to memory problems, poor organisation, planning and sequencing skills. Dyspraxia is thought to be caused by an immaturity of neurone development in the brain which disrupts the way the brain sends messages to the body. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe announced he had the disorder in 2008. Other well known personalities affected by the condition include South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck, model Cara Delvingne and Jamie Lambert who is part of the Britain’s Got Talent winning male singing group Collabro. Indeed, Jamie has just become a Celebrity Patron for the Charity the Dyspraxia Foundation and is fronting this year’s awareness campaign. His mother Lorraine has shared her thoughts in a blog to help others. She urges people not to assume that those with the condition have limited potential. Around 5% of the population are affected by Dyspraxia and around 2% are severely affected. Evidence shows the condition sometimes runs in

families and that boys are three times more likely to be affected than girls. Sometimes Dyspraxia occurs in isolation, but frequently it coexists with conditions such as Asperger’s Syndrome (High Functioning Autism), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, language disorders, and social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Diagnosis via specific assessments often happens at school age and usually leads to referral to specialist support services. While many of those with Dyspraxia are highly intelligent, their ability to learn is often impaired and they will need to repeat things and practice more often. At a special event in Parliament in 2014, Emma Lewell-Buck said, “I used to also suffer from low self-esteem and confidence, and for a time at school I got frustrated with having to work harder than the other kids and started to misbehave. But I realised that if I was going to make something of my life I needed to start knuckling down – even if it did take longer to grasp and understand things I knew that I was just as capable as anyone else.” The Dyspraxia Foundation provides resources and a helpline to assist young adults affected by Dyspraxia as well as their families, teachers and healthcare professionals. There are also many local support groups. Find out more at: www.dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk Helpline: (01462) 454986 Susan Brookes-Morris

Lumps and Bumps Why Self-Examination is important

O

ne in eight women will get breast cancer, yet over a third of women don’t check themselves regularly for early tell tale signs that could save lives. Women: Regular selfexamination should take place around the same time every month to help you become familiar with the natural shape and feel of your breasts. Any changes should be easily detected, in particular puckering and dimpling of the skin, new pain that doesn’t go away, lumps or bumps not present in the other breast, and unusual discharge, bleeding or rash from the nipple. Men: While breast cancer is more common in women over fifty, testicular cancer is a young man’s disease, with males aged 15-35 being

most at risk. Early diagnosis can be lifesaving, yet only one in five men check themselves monthly. During or after a warm bath or shower is the best time to self examine, when the muscles are relaxed and hang lower. Danger signs include pain or discomfort in the testicles or scrotum; a dragging feeling in the scrotum; a dull ache in the groin or lower stomach; excess fluid in the scrotum; blood in the sperm and discharge from the penis. For more information about how to selfexamine, visit Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies website www.channel4embarrassingillnesses.com, where there are excellent video tutorials available. Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read October’s selection from book reviewer Tilly Anderson Professor Stewart’s Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities – Ian Stewart Professor Ian Stewart is a mathematician and writes about maths, but please don’t stop reading here – this is definitely not the same maths you learned at school! In his Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities Professor Stewart manages the subtle balancing act of neither making his work too highbrow, nor too lowbrow. Those with a mathematical background will find much to enjoy but so will those whose abiding memory of school maths is counting the minutes until the end-of-lesson bell. Yes, he writes about complicated things but in his hands it all becomes understandable and even fun. Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities contains some 200 or so entries which cover all manner of mathematical conundrums with a bit of mathematical history thrown in. There are games, puzzles, card tricks and projects. Many of the entries will have you saying, “Oh yes, I’ve heard of that… so that’s what it’s all about!” There are entries on the four-colour theorem, fractals, Fermat’s last theorem, magic squares, degrees of separation, space-filling curves, Fibonacci numbers, the Moebius band, chaos theory and much more. The book is designed to be read, and shared, in small bite-sized chunks. For a non-mathematician, reading it all in one sitting might prove a bit relentless. It is the sharing aspect though, which makes this irresistible. You’ll just have to try out the number games and puzzles on members of your family and you won’t be able to stop yourself from sharing

interesting facts such as how much shorter the M25 is anti-clockwise than clockwise. Harvesting Dreams: Hundertwasser for Kids – Barbara Stieff You may never have heard of Friedensreich Hundertwasser but he was an eccentric artist, humanitarian, environmentalist and architect. He dedicated his life to the beautification of the world in which we live. In this colourful, quirky book Barbara Stieff introduces children to Hundertwasser’s free-thinking, inspirational approach to art and the environment. There is something about Hundertwasser’s vibrant, exciting work which appeals to children and adults alike. Most children enjoy colouring and love bright colours but often become bogged down with making things ‘look right’ rather than developing their own creative style. Likewise adults don’t always fully appreciate children’s imaginative artwork and gently admonish that cows are not pink with yellow stripes when of course there’s no good reason why they shouldn’t be any colour at all in a painting. Stieff’s engaging and slightly off-the-wall style suits the book. She spent many years as an art educator at ZOOM, a children’s museum in Vienna, and it shows. The book is packed with fun projects and suggestions for stretching children’s imaginations in an artistic – but also in a more general – way. It is also lavishly illustrated with Hundertwasser’s work which makes it a beautiful decorative item in its own right; a fact of which Hundertwasser would certainly have approved.

Billingshurst Dramatic Society presents ‘The Memory of Water’

S

helagh Stephenson’s play, The Memory Of Water, is the Billingshurst Dramatic Society’s October production. The process of choosing a play for us to do is helped along by our informal play readings. We usually gather at someone’s house at various points throughout the summer, and read plays from different genres and playwrights. For example, this year we read A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen one week, and Suspicions by NJ Crisp the next. Sometimes the director of the next play has an idea of what they want to stage, but other times, the summer play readings provide inspiration for our next production. After the great fun and success found in our May production of Country Dances, October’s The Memory Of Water is proving a perfect piece to get stuck into for both cast and director alike. Billed as a comedy, the play certainly has a T: 01403 780 823 M: 07825 285 916 E: gbglazing@hotmail.com

dark humour as it follows three grown-up sisters redefining their relationships to each other, and examining their (often differing) memories of childhood, all helped along by their mother (whose wake they happen to be at). Two partners have the sometimes dubious pleasure of landing in the middle of these three sisters, and a lot of wit and wry comedy arises. The cast and crew have been rehearsing hard as the nights have drawn in and the flurry of work has felt particularly quick this year! The Fire Service’s Toughest Day

A

lthough it only seems like yesterday, it is now over a month ago when the community of West Sussex was changed forever following the Shoreham Air Show crash on 22nd August. Every firefighter and other emergency services would never have thought their shift was going to plan out like it did. Our first thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those victims who never made it home that day. It didn’t take long for all emergency services to be on scene when the first call was made. This was soon to be declared as a major incident... The professionalism shown by each individual was truly amazing and makes you think how lucky we are to live in such a great community. Social media was soon bombarded with photos and videos of the plane – a Hawker Hunter –

crashing on to the A27 despite Police asking for people not to upload any footage taken that day as this could be very upsetting for others, especially those who have lost loved ones. The road was closed for a whole week as expected for investigation teams to try and work out exactly what went wrong. As a fire service we supported other authorities with this work until we were no longer needed but this lasted for most of the week, so a great effort from all the guys in West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service who attended this incident. As an emergency service we are trained for this type of incident but we don’t expect it to ever happen as we all know the devastating consequences. In a true professional manner we did everything possible to help. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station

Terrific Tulips

I

f I could grow only one type of flower then it would have to be the tulip. Harbingers of warmer days, the choice available is mindblowing. There are frilly parrot tulips bearing fringed petals, sturdy fat-flowered types and graceful plants with lily-like blooms. They are also tremendously accommodating. You can plant them much later than daffodils and narcissi because they don’t need to start producing roots so early. In fact you can plant them from now until Christmas! My mother uses them as annuals and rips them up after flowering but I can’t bear to do that so I plant them deeply and leave them in the garden where they return happily year on year. If you want to use them as disposable bedding you only need to plant them about 10cm/ 4 inches deep. If, like me, you treat them as old

friends then plant them 23cm/9 inches deep and they won’t disappoint you. Rachel Leverton

Pot Luck

Tulips are wonderful in containers. As a guide, a 25-30cm/10-12 inch diameter pot will accommodate a dozen bulbs. For a larger 47.5cm/19inch pot use 16-18 bulbs.

Cover the base with at least 5cm/2inches of drainage material and 12cm/5 inches of soilless multi-purpose compost. Lay the bulbs in an inner and outer circle making sure that no bulb touches either another, or the outside of the pot. Fill the pot with compost to within 2.5cm/1 inch of the rim. I finish pots off with strips of daisies or anemones planted around the edge in colours which complement the tulips. Water everything in but shelter the pot from heavy rain so it doesn’t become waterlogged and never water in frosty weather. I use water-retaining granules mixed in with the compost. These help to maintain soil moisture throughout the dormant season. Feed the daisies or anemones throughout their flowering season in the autumn and the spring and you should be rewarded with a beautiful display sometime in April or May. I love to plant containers of tulips by my front door. I have a red door so choose something like Tulipa ‘Apeldoorn’ in yellow and red varieties underplanted with red daisies. If you have a blue or green door you might like to try Tulipa ‘Angelique’ (pale pink) underplanted with pink anemones. Or how about Tulipa ‘Bleu Aimable’ a brilliant purple/blue variety?

The shed John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

have spoken before on the way the male of our species loves tools and all things mechanical. Here on the farm, as in many other working environments, there are machines and a multitude of equipment that should keep any bloke happy. However, there is one item that every man desires even when his working life is among such things. It’s the place that he believes will be his refuge, his place of peace and quiet where he can ‘do his own thing’. The shed. The shed is ingrained into the male psyche from a very early age. He learns it from his father who in turn inherited from his, and so on ad infinitum. It usually begins after he has returned from his honeymoon and is suddenly confronted with the prospect of having no place to retreat to when in need of a quiet hidey hole to have a good sulk after being found guilty of some minor indiscretion. So, if he is not fortunate enough to have one already, he builds – or buys – himself a shed. He learns his first lesson. No matter how big you build it, it’s not big enough. (The same rule can be applied to the garden greenhouse!) For those first few years of the shed’s existence he finds it does not come anywhere near his expectations as a place of respite. He may indeed have a few tools somewhere in its dust- and spider-filled spaces, but on the whole it is jam packed full of household detritus. Kids’ bikes and assorted bits of the same are sure to take up a good degree of the floor area. Swingball, blow-up paddling pool, torn gazebo (most of its poles and hooks long since lost), along with assorted garden tools and untold numbers of other pieces of junk are piled in the far corners where you wisely decide to leave them as you know that moving just one piece will expose many more, and you can’t be bothered anyway! Then comes the day the children migrate from the home. You are at peace. The shed now has a chance to become the object you were hoping for when you first envisaged its existence. Inspired, you spend weeks slowly clearing the debris. Many visits to the local dump are followed by an explosion of effort in putting up shelving and assorted fastening hooks all round its newly lined walls.

40

You venture forth to the local DIY store, or, if you are computer literate, Amazon and Screw Fix online are perused for many an hour. Gradually, over the years that follow, the shed takes on the appearance that once, so long ago, you dreamed it would look. Rows of electrical gadgets line the shelves. Those old half-empty, and long since solidified, paint pots are gone, now replaced by new half-full tins who in their turn will now stand there for the next half century. Men… is this not what you have waited so long for? This wonderful equipment awaiting to complete that task which the little lady has been asking you to do for the last couple of decades. Oh, I know that a good percentage of these tools are way past your capability to use, but that’s a minor obstacle. At least you could do it, you now have the means to do it. So… do you do it? No. Of course you don’t! Why not? I think there must be a scientific reason. Perhaps an academic research team could write a thesis on the question. You have the time, the means, and the equipment, but now you can’t be bothered. The inquisitive passion and inventiveness of those earlier years has gone. The sign, ‘Dads Shed’, that your offspring gave you so many years ago hangs forlornly on the door. Now it fronts a place of silence. Inside there still lurks a faint smell of oil and varnish, but that’s always been there. In fact you don’t know exactly where it comes from as neither have been used for as long as you can remember. The tools still hang there, now touched by a smudge of corrosion, many still unused from when they were unpacked from their original boxes. So, my fellow males, what went wrong? Can it be that the best days of a shed are in fact in those early years? Those days when its contents were a jumble of everything that would not squeeze into the confines of the lobby. When, to find something was a treasure hunt through the hidden spoils of the family cast-offs. Was the idea of a quiet bolthole from the hurly burly of life just a dream? It’s there for the taking now but for some reason the sofa in front of the tele seems a more tempting proposition. Never mind… you can sit there in peaceful satisfaction. The shed you always yearned for is there if it’s needed. If only you had the inclination to use it! John Nash

Clipping season is here!

A

s you read this article I’m sure you have noticed that your horse has grown his winter coat. While this was great when horses were in the wild it’s not so good for the modern day horse in regular work as he will become sweaty and uncomfortable and be at risk of catching a chill. Why clip? Horses and ponies are clipped to prevent them sweating when working in their full winter coat and make it easier for them to dry off after work. We must make sure we are clipping the horse for the right reasons. Native ponies that live out at grass and maybe only do light work once or twice a week will not need a full clip and must be left with enough coat to be able to protect themselves from the elements, unlike a hunter in hard work who must be clipped to remain cool and comfortable while working and be able to be easily dried off afterwards. Think carefully before clipping and don’t just do it for the sake of it. Types of clip. This will depend upon the amount of work the horse is in. For a child’s pony or happy hacker who is just doing an hour each day at the weekend a bib clip will be perfectly sufficient; this removes the hair from the chest and underside of the neck only. A trace clip is a popular clip and can be suited to the work level of the horse. Hair is removed from the underside of the neck, chest, belly and flank, trace clips can be high, medium or low, and more hair can be taken off as work levels increase. Similar to a trace clip is the chaser clip. Here hair is removed from the belly, chest, and underside of neck from the stifle and does not include the flank. A blanket clip, as the name suggests, leaves a blanket of hair on the horse’s back, hair being removed from the neck, belly, chest and flank. With a hunter clip all hair is removed except from the legs and a saddle patch and a full clip removes all hair on the body and head. These clips are only really suitable for horses in a high level of work throughout the winter. Preparation. Firstly make sure your clippers are serviced and have sharp blades ready for the season

ahead! The horse should have been thoroughly groomed to remove any mud or dust in the coat which can blunt the blades of the clippers more easily. Make sure the area you plan to clip in is clean and tidy with nothing to get in the way if the horse moves suddenly. Clippers should be plugged into a circuit-breaking device if you are using a mains powered set. Draw out the lines of the clip you are planning to do on the horse’s coat using a piece of chalk and check the pattern is the same both sides, you can use a piece of string from the middle of the horse’s back to the edge of the pattern to check it’s the same height on each side. Allow the horse to become accustomed to the clippers before you switch them on. Start the clip on the horses shoulder and use firm sweeps of the clippers. Make sure you stop every ten minutes to oil the blades; this will keep them cool and lubricated. Some horses never really take to being clipped or may be over sensitive. Speak to your vet about the best way to go forward as they will be able to prescribe a light sedation. For those horses who really won’t tolerate clippers near them intravenous sedation may be the only answer. Having a helper makes clipping so much easier, especially when it comes to the area around the elbow, get your helper to pull each of the horse’s forelegs forward to allow you access and to stretch the skin so you don’t risk catching the horse with the clippers. Once the clip is finished go over the horse with a body brush to remove any loose hair and then give the coat a ‘hot cloth’ using hand-hot water with a splash of Dettol or a skin wash. Dip the cloth in the water and wring out then rub all over the coat to lift any remaining deep seated grease or dirt. A Healthy Computer is a Happy Computer Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services

I

t’s sad but true: a computer’s for life not just for Christmas. It’s so exciting getting a new computer; it’s all shiny and fast! But sadly, after a short while we forget just how much we loved our brand new computer and as it starts to slow down a little. It soon becomes part of the daily routine and sometimes even a nuisance or source of frustration. So here are some tips to look after your computer so that it runs as fast and smoothly as it did on the first day you fired it up and is just as shiny. First thing is to keep your computer clean. Buy some screen wipes to keep that looking nice and every now again unplug your keyboard, give it a good shake and a wipe down. One of the reasons older computers can run hot is that there is a build up of dust within the main housing – especially around the fan. If you feel confident enough you can open up your box and give the inside a gentle Hoover. Aim to hover the nozzle over the components without actually touching them. Be careful though*. Do a monthly housekeep of your files. It’s easy to be a computer pack rat and just keep everything “just in case” you might need it one day. However, the more space you use on your computer the slower it will become. In fact, when you get to within 90% of using your total disk space your computer will not be happy at all. If you want to keep stuff rather than delete it for

ever (pictures are the most typical example) then archive it or use an online service like Dropbox. Regularly defragment your hard drive. When you save a large file to your computer it gets broken down into chunks of data and stored across the different locations in your computer’s hard drive – this will slow your computer down, especially if you have lots of large files. Running a ‘defrag’ will reorganise the chunks of data into a more logical fashion and your computer will speed up. Click Start on your desktop and type ‘defragmenter’ in the search box. Click Disk Defragmenter from the results. Highlight the drive you want to defragment (usually the C: drive), then click Defragment disk. Repair hard drive errors. Bad sectors and file errors on your hard disk will also slow your computer down. You can do this by going into the Properties section of your computer via the Start menu. Other things to do include running anti-virus software (we like AVG), checking for spyware and malware, delete old emails and clear out your browser history once in a while. Before you do anything though we recommend you back up everything. If your computer is running slow and you would like some help to fix it then get in touch. *Please note: Bax Computers accepts no liability for the outcomes of any advice given in this column. Don’t Break Down!

hortly after taking delivery of a new-to-me car, I absentmindedly started filling the fuel tank with petrol, until I suddenly remembered it took diesel! Fortunately, I immediately stopped refuelling and phoned for breakdown services who flushed the tank clean, thus avoiding serious engine damage and expensive repair bills. Fuel-related problems are one of the major causes of car breakdowns, with running out of fuel ranked in Green Flag’s top five. But many breakdowns can be avoided with a little forethought. For example, make a commitment to never let your car run on less than a quarter full, and you should never face the embarrassment of an empty tank! Most of us have had a flat battery. Sometimes this occurs due to a genuine fault, but more often happens after leaving the lights or radio on, or because the terminals are dirty, or the clamps loose. Regular maintenance and servicing can eliminate problems like this, but as we are all human and make mistakes from time to time, keep a set of jump leads in the car ‘just in case’! Also, if you tend to make only short journeys in your car, give it a good run every week or two to give the battery chance to recharge itself. Flat or damaged tyres are another common problem. Check your handbook to keep tyres at the correct

pressure and be careful to avoid hitting the kerb, as the impact can damage tyre sidewalls and rims. A good practice is to check tyre pressures and tread every time you fill up, watching out for nails or glass in the tyres and paying special attention to the tread depth. If it is uneven, the tyres may be misaligned. Does your vehicle have a second set of keys? Keeping a spare set in a safe place will prevent big headaches should you ever lock yourself out of your car, or worse still lose your keys. Most modern cars now have a ‘transponder’ key which combines a conventional mechanical key with an encrypted electronic chip to prevent theft. Replacement is often available only through an authorised dealer and could take several days. Much better to keep a spare! Finally, there are a number of mechanical and electrical faults that might cause a breakdown, such as the starter motor or spark plugs. At the first signs of any problems (like difficulty starting the engine for example), get your car checked over by a garage to avoid further problems. Owning a vehicle is an essential part of life for the majority of us these days. Let’s keep them breakdownfree by carrying out good, regular maintenance, and by using a bit of common sense! Billingshurst Centre Makeover Funding success for the Billingshurst Centre A grant of £20,000 has been awarded to the Billingshurst Centre to fund improvements to the Community and Conference Centre. Have you seen the lovely new carpet throughout the building? It is a rich reddish brown colour bringing warmth to the building. Blackout blinds have been installed in the main hall for village cinema nights. Delivery of 300 new chairs like the one pictured here is anticipated soon. The Centre is grateful to the work experience volunteers who have worked so hard both inside and outside of the building to improve its appearance. Billingshurst Centre is available for hire for community events, children’s parties, weddings, fitness, live music, commercial hire, conferences.

Billingshurst Community Police Hub The Community Police Hub situated at the Billingshurst Centre is open Monday to Friday 9.30am-12.30pm and 2.30pm-5.00pm. You can pop in and visit, no need to make an appointment or telephone the office on 01403 786881.

Community Police Hub Volunteers Billingshurst Police Office is currently looking for volunteers to join their team. Their office is run very successfully by a team of volunteers who dedicate their time and skills to support the Community, liaising between the Public and the Police. The volunteer role consists of answering the telephone, data entry on the Police computer, a point of contact on the front counter, filing and relaying information from the public to the Neighbourhood Policing Teams. If you would like to know more about the role please contact Rachel Mundy on 101 Ext 530317 or 07912 892984 rachel.mundy@sussex.pnn.police.uk Please note, volunteers are sourced locally in Billingshurst, so they have a strong understanding of the local community and priorities, also travelling expenses are not reimbursed. Ideally candidates will be able to volunteer for a morning or afternoon for a period of three hours on a weekday. Our Community Volunteers – meet Patrick Perks

T

here is no doubt that Billingshurst has much to thank Patrick Perks for. He has been a key figure in the village for the past fifteen years, involved in the creation and planning of a number of facilities: the Leisure Centre, Jubilee Fields, the regeneration of Burnt Row Wood, the fishing lake and the Childcare Centre, as well as the initiation of events and services such as the lunch club for the elderly, Billifest, and a youth drop-in centre. After retiring from his job in telecommunications Patrick spent some time working for the British Executive Services Overseas, but by 1998 he was back in Billingshurst and looking for the next challenge. He decided that he wanted to give back something to the community that his family had grown up in, and that had supported them during his frequent business trips away from home. Initially he joined the Parish Council, later becoming its Chair, and in 2002 helped to develop a Community Action Plan, and later went on to form the Billingshurst Community Partnership. In 2011 the Partnership was presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the equivalent of an MBE, and the highest award that can be given to a voluntary group. A consistent thread which runs through the many

projects is identifying a local need and meeting it, particularly during the steep increase in Billingshurst’s population. This ranges from the Community Action Plan (which resulted in the Leisure Centre and Childcare Centre) to the current plans for a bespoke youth centre. Patrick observes that there is nothing like this for the local youth population at present; while there are flourishing Scout and Guide groups in Billingshurst, some would rather do their own thing and prefer what he describes as “a darker room and a beanbag”. Does Patrick’s involvement in a wide range of organisations – which also include the Weald where he has been a Governor since 1999, the Rotary Club and St Mary’s – mean that he is well placed to spot the common aims, potential partnerships and funding sources needed to make things happen? “Well,” he admits, modestly, “I know where to go and who to talk to.” Patrick’s efforts have not gone unnoticed; he was recently awarded the British Empire Medal in recognition for services to the community of Billingshurst.
