The area’s longest-established, independent family firm
Keith Hutchinson. FNAEA Director With over 30 years’ experience as an estate agent, Keith entered the trade as a trainee in Worthing and after 5 years was running a small estate agency in Findon Valley. He then decided to commute from his home in Barns Green to run a large market leading estate agents in Cobham, Surrey. Keith enjoyed his years running the branch in Cobham, and learnt a lot about the trade and gained huge experience dealing with international clients in a very competitive marketplace. After 5 years Keith was offered a role managing an estate agent in Storrington, which he did very successfully for quite a few years, winning national awards along the way. His success led him to the role of Area Management and Head of Training and Development for a large practice with offices all along the south coast and Surrey. Keith then had the chance to establish a local independent estate agent in Horsham town centre known as Mallards. He successfully ran this branch for 12 years, which saw it become one of the market leading firms in Horsham, and he also oversaw the other branches of the company. With almost 5 years running Fowlers Billingshurst under his belt, Keith is able to use all his vast experience and knowledge to help and advise individuals, families and companies on all property matters in the local area. The office has thriving sales, lettings and new homes departments all at your disposal. Fowlers are passionate about estate agency and as the area’s longest established family firm, a no pressure approach is guaranteed. Carve the Best Pumpkin Halloween: 31st October
C
arving Jack o’ Lanterns dates back to an old Celtic holiday, Samhain. People carved scary looking turnip lanterns and lit them with candles to ward off spirits. When the Irish migrated to America, they found that pumpkins grown there were much easier to carve so adapted their custom. My children love to carve pumpkins. Oh, who am I kidding, my husband and I love it too and over the years our designs have become more ambitious. Here are a few tips. Start with the right pumpkin. It should be fresh with a sturdy stem, no bruises and a flat bottom so it won’t roll. A smooth one is easier to carve and if you can find one with a flatter ‘face’ so much the better. Use proper safety pumpkin carving sets. No one wants to spend Halloween sat in the accident and emergency department dressed as Dracula’s Bride. OK, that was the one year I did NOT use a proper pumpkin saw and I was more at risk at dying from embarrassment than the blood loss but don’t risk it, folks. Cut the lid using the saw angled in towards the stem. That way the lid won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it. Scoop out all the pulp and some of the flesh – an ice cream scoop works brilliantly. You can now download patterns from the internet. These are terrific if you have limited artistic skills like me. Tape the pattern to the

pumpkin (make little cuts around the edge of the pattern if the pumpkin is a bit too round, and that way it will fit better). Then use a pin or small nail to puncture the paper and the outer skin of the pumpkin at intervals of around 1/4" / 6mm, or even closer for intricate designs. If it’s difficult to see your poked-out pattern, rub a little corn flour or baby powder into the dots. The dots will turn bright white and your design will magically appear. Carve the tiniest sections first. Then carve the areas in the centre of the pattern, and then work outwards. That way you can rest your hand on the stronger uncut part of the pumpkin, rather than your carved-out design. Rather than always cutting all the way through the pumpkin try just removing some of the skin. The yellow flesh underneath will glow when lit up from inside. Spread Vaseline on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If you have to carve it a few days in advance and it shrivels you can revive it with a face-down soak in cold water. Pumpkin carving is a great activity for all the family. You can make it competitive, or have a theme for your pumpkins, or invite friends over for a pumpkin carving party. Just don’t end up in casualty wearing a wild wig and face paint. A safe Halloween is a Happy Halloween! Louise Addison

Choc Spider Cupcakes METHOD
A Halloween treat
1. Preheat the oven to Gas 3 / 175°C. Place the flour, cocoa powder, caster sugar, baking powder, salt and butter into an electric mixer (or use a handheld whisk) and beat on a slow speed until the mixture looks grainy, like sand. 2. In a separate jug whisk the milk, egg and vanilla extract together. Pour half into the flour mixture. Beat well to combine and make sure you get rid of any lumps. Add the second half of the egg and milk mixture and beat until the mixture is smooth (about two minutes). 3. Spoon the mixture into 12 paper cupcake cases and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until cooked. Set aside to cool. 4. To make the icing: Beat the icing sugar, butter and cocoa powder together by hand or in an electric mixer. Add the milk a little at a time then beat well until the mixture is light and fluffy. Use this to cover the cooled cakes. 5. To finish the spiders: Pour the chocolate sprinkles on to a saucer. Take each iced cake and dip the icing into the sprinkles to make the hairy spider’s body. Place two ‘eyeballs’ on each cupcake. Use a skewer to poke 4 holes on opposite sides of each cupcake; insert liquorice strips into each hole.

“I was able to go back to being mum’s daughter not her carer”
T
he following is a touching story St Catherine’s Hospice received from Mandy Martin of Horsham and is about how they cared for her mum, Lynne… “My mum, Lynne, was an auxiliary nurse; all her life she cared for people, that’s just who she was. She had a stubborn streak too. You’d never be able to get her to do something she didn’t want to, and she was an organiser, right down to the instructions she left about dressing her in her favourite skirt and making sure she had her most treasured photos and letters from us all when she was gone. “Mum had been feeling unwell since late 2015. She always had aches and pains so none of us thought much of it but in May 2016 she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and we were given options to help her. “The minute we heard the word ‘hospice’, we thought that’s it, job’s done but now we know that’s not completely true. Dr Gregory, one of St Catherine’s doctors, came to visit mum at home and was so good at explaining things. She was always happy to talk and give us time, and that made a real difference. Mum also had support from St Catherine’s community nurses who helped manage her pain at home but when it became too much she was admitted to the hospice. “When I brought mum to St Catherine’s, it was my first time here. Mum didn’t want to go in and neither I nor my sister could get her to move from the car. She was so nervous her knees were knocking but a nurse spoke with her and she agreed to go inside. The minute we entered the hospice, someone offered me a cup of tea, and I instantly realised it wasn’t what I expected. It wasn’t like a hospital, it felt more like a little hotel with a community feel. It was warm and welcoming and I wasn’t scared about leaving mum as I knew she’d be looked after. “We settled mum into her room and helped her make it her own. She loved purple, it was her favourite, so we brought her purple bedding, family pictures and flowers, and my sisters and I stayed with her overnight, sleeping in a chair by her bed, or in the relatives’ room. It was lovely that there were no visiting time restrictions, we could just be with mum whenever she needed us and, thanks to St Catherine’s, I was able to go back to being mum’s daughter not her carer. Small details made a real difference too. We loved indulging in the ward’s drinks trolley and one day, when an ice cream van arrived at the hospice, nurses brought mum an ice cream. She absolutely loved it! “When mum was approaching the end a doctor

took us into the relatives’ room and told us it was short days. It was a nice way to put it, and I’ll never forget how lovely all the staff were or how selflessly they cared for mum. Whenever they were with her, they’d talk to her even though she couldn’t answer. They used slip sheets to move her, they brushed her hair, and made sure she was eating and drinking whenever she was able. They even dipped a soft brush in water to keep mum’s lips moist. Whatever mum needed, it was there. The night before mum passed away, my brothers, sisters and I stayed with her. She wasn’t alone for a single minute, and nurses tended to her all through the night making sure she was comfortable and not in any pain. “And their care didn’t stop once mum was gone. We left mum’s instructions with the nurses and they made sure mum had all her special bits, just like she wanted. When we visited, mum looked just like she was sleeping and we were able to spend as much time with her as we needed. My sister had made a blanket with our names on and we filled a secret pocket with pictures, petals and flowers; it was lovely. “Mum was one of nine siblings, and her youngest brother Mick visited her just before she went into the hospice. As he got home from visiting, mum sent him a text message: ‘Loved to spend time with you but in better circumstances, please don’t forget me LAD, Love you to the Moon and back. Love Sis Lynne’. “In September 2016, Uncle Mick decided to do something to remember mum and raise awareness of St Catherine’s. He loves bikes so he embarked on a month long, 5,000-mile bike ride around the UK coastline on a motorbike that he built himself. His girlfriend painted the bike purple and covered it in roses, mum’s favourite flower, and we nicknamed it Dancing Queen after Mum’s favourite song. As Mick rode he had 12 dream catchers to represent mum’s grandchildren and six roses to represent her children attached to the bike. He laid a rose in different places as he travelled as mum didn’t get to travel much while she was here so this was his way of taking her on his journey with him. Uncle Mick left from St Catherine’s on 21st July 2017 at 1.45pm – exactly a year since we lost mum. For me, there was no better tribute to the wonderful lady I called mum. “I’m so grateful to St Catherine’s for everything they’ve done. Thank you never seems enough but raising money, so St Catherine’s can care for other people like they did mum, is my family’s way of saying thank you.” Laura Mitchell, St Catherine’s Hospice Photo: Mandy and mum Lynne

Age UK Horsham District set to launch Dementia project
I
hope you all had a good summer and managed to dodge at least some of the rain! I’m currently working on a project alongside the Community Partnership, Parish Council and the Lions to support those living with dementia and am looking into signage in the village. It’s important that we keep our dementia friendly status that Horsham District attained recently through the Dementia Alliance. Anyone can become a dementia friend – details at www.dementiaaction.org.uk. In the meantime if you know of anyone who would benefit from the support of Age UK Horsham District then just let us know via the contact details below. Posters on the Front Line Rare WW1 American poster collection found in Rudgwick attic Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, 9th September-14th October
P
repare to be compelled, enticed, coerced, urged and coaxed by the brilliant images and bold statements of World War One propaganda. For the first time, a rare highly colourful collection of Great War posters that drew on the influences of the Parisian posters of Lautrec, yet also inspired the great Hollywood posters and the pop art of Lichtenstein are on display. Eleven stunning powerful American posters form the centrepiece of the new exhibition Posters on the Front Line now showing at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum until Saturday 14th October. These eleven posters have an air of mystery about them. They don’t date from the same time, they span nearly two years of advertising campaigns – proving they were deliberately collected. They must have come from America but were found abandoned in a roof space in a small village in West Sussex preserved in a cardboard tube – the edges frayed and the odd tear but otherwise undamged and with their colours as bright as the day they were printed. Fortunately the new owner of the Rudgwick house donated them to us and after conservation the Museum can display them in this commemorative exhibition. From the dark and sinister tones of John Norton and Walter H Everett’s designs, to the bright and patriotic images of Howard Chandler Christy and Gerrit A Beneker’s work, see the amazing variety of posters produced as part of the war effort and Liberty Loan campaign. With eye-catching illustrations, bold graphic design and gallant statements, these posters truly capture a snapshot of the collective effort of
American citizens throughout the Great War. The Americans were not alone in using posters as a powerful form of propaganda to sway and influence their nation. Great Britain produced some iconic images and graphic design, including the most iconic of all: Lord Kitchener pointing his finger at the viewer: ‘Your country needs YOU’ That poster is not on display in this exhibition – but the other posters are equally as powerful due to their simplicity. At Horsham Museum there are some intriguing posters from the area, such as an order to extinguish lights and even an appeal for blankets for soldiers. These posters reveal collective strength and energy of those on the Home Front supporting the war effort. Also, there are striking national posters, government appeals for volunteers for the army, and an unusual poster warning against conscription. Immerse yourself in the powerful and bold posters from World War One, which have an ability even today to speak directly to you, the visitor; such is their mastery of communication. This is a rare opportunity to experience the propaganda campaign that enthralled public life, both in the United States and Great Britain. Come and see some truly iconic and historic posters in the exhibition Posters on the Front Line which opened on 9th September and runs until the 14th October at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. Free Admission. Open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org. Rachel Weller, Administration Assistant, Horsham Museum & Art Gallery

Community / About the house
Billingshurst Fire Station Open Day – thank you
T
hank you to everyone that attended our Open Day last month. It was a great success with a huge number of the community showing their support. We hope you learnt something from the displays we showed you and also the advice from our campaigns. These events take time and effort from everyone involved so it makes it worthwhile when we see people supporting us, so THANK YOU. Our new recruit Ronnie Hampton, introduced to Village Tweet readers in August (photo, right) is settling in well. He will be looking to complete his Breathing Apparatus and Road Traffic Collision courses in the coming
months as well as probation tests so a busy few months lie ahead for Ronnie. We also have another new recruit in the pipeline so our numbers on station are starting to build up which is fantastic news. It’s been an up and down summer with fire calls. We’ve had some busy weeks and then some quieter ones. As the evenings draw in, the next few months we will be pushing our autumn and winter campaigns. As always we want the community to be safe and a role within the Fire Service is to promote safety. We hope that what we put out there is getting across to keep you safer on a daily basis. Once again thank you to those who attended our Open Day and we look forward to doing it all again in a couple of years. Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read October’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby When I Was Invisible – Dorothy Koomson We have all felt invisible at times. Whether it is in the staffroom at work where everyone else is chatting and you feel left out or waiting to be served somewhere and it seems as if everyone else is being served first. But what if the one person you feel you should be able to turn to when things go wrong ignores your plight? When I Was Invisible tells the story of two girls with the same name. Veronica (Roni) Harper and Veronika (Nika) Harper met when they were eight years old and knew they were immediately destined to become ballerinas. However, life doesn’t always go as planned and both girls, now in their thirties are living invisible lives: one is a nun and one is living homeless on the streets of Birmingham. Neither planned to be there and the story of how they got there gradually unfolds, told in the first person by both Roni and Nika. What ultimately lies at the heart of this is a betrayal that ran so deep it destroyed both friendships and lives. As Roni leaves the convent overwhelmed by guilt and seeks out Nika to make amends the novel builds to a tense climax as the true nature of the betrayal is revealed and the many layers of their lives are peeled back.

Some choose to be invisible in our busy society, others feel invisible and lost because of the way they are treated. This moving novel reminds us to listen to others and pay attention to their lives. Operation Eiffel Tower – Elen Caldecott This children’s book, aimed at 9-11-year-old readers is a sweet and touching tale of four siblings who live in a seaside resort with their parents. Lauren, Jack, Ruby, and Billy enjoy living by the sea. Jack helps out at the local adventure golf course and plays the odd round when things are quiet. But life isn’t all great and the children are fed up of hearing their parents arguing. Lauren reads in one of her magazines that a weekend break in Paris is the perfect way to reignite a relationship and so the children plot to raise money to send Mum and Dad to Paris to help them remember why they fell in love. It becomes known as ‘Operation Eiffel Tower’. However, before long, Dad moves out and the children fear that they are too late. This novel deals with the break-up of a family in a realistic way, with humour thrown in. It shows that relationships don’t always work out as planned, and neither do our hopes and dreams. Will it have the happy ending that the four siblings want? And if it doesn’t, have they failed, or can things still work out okay?

Billingshurst Parish Neighbourhood Plan Vision & Objectives Billingshurst Parish Council would be grateful if you could spare a few minutes of your time to read our draft Vision & Objectives for the future of Billingshurst and its surrounding villages, as part of the development of the Parish’s Neighbourhood Plan and let us have your views. As a resident your opinion is important to us – and the community.
It’s 2031… …and the Parish of Billingshurst thrives as a vibrant, prosperous and distinctive West Sussex community. At its heart is the historic village of Billingshurst*, with its charming High Street, listed buildings and bustling shops that are all announced as you approach, by the spire of St Mary’s Church. Adversane, Coneyhurst and Five Oaks are also important and valued hamlets in the parish. *Based on the size of the population today, growth over the plan period will mean that the village of Billingshurst is going to evolve and grow into a ‘small market town’.

Fast broadband is available throughout the area, existing businesses continue to provide local employment and there is a range of business opportunities for others, particularly ‘start-ups’. The communities of Adversane, Coneyhurst and Five Oaks continue to develop their own distinct heritage and contribute to the well-being of the parish, whilst enjoying the support of the larger settlement of Billingshurst.

Autumn bliss? John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
A
fter last month’s more serious article on that wonderful fruit, the cherry, I felt I should perhaps go a tad lighter this month. So I’ve decided to explain my thoughts on the coming season of autumn, for it’s that time again and the leaves are on the turn. The House Martins and the Swallows gather for their long journey to warmer climes and the combine harvesters and balers once more are put to hibernate in the barns of a thousand farms. To many people autumn is a sad and unliked time of the year. For me, I love it. The harvesting has finished with perhaps just a few of the late apples hanging on the bough and the land settles and prepares for the coming winter. I look forward to those mornings when the sun rises over the first grass frosts of the year and the multi-coloured leaves of a thousand trees shout their presents to you from distant woods. The ducks once more gather on the reservoir, and invade my garden every morning for their breakfast of peanuts. (Where the devil did they get a taste for them?) Shorts are exchanged for jeans and overalls, and the milking herds on countless farms move into their winter barns for the coming winter as their meadows squelch under the first of the winter rains. Farming is a way of life that is always changing. It revolves constantly to the whim of the season and as such is never the same from one year to the next. The timing of jobs changes as quickly as the forecast, and often only the sketchiest of plans can be made in advance of the position of the donkey’s tail. (See the end of this missive for details.) Mind you… how are we poor yokels supposed to get it right when even the experts sometimes go astray (remember Michael Fish, October 1987!) So why do I like this time of ‘mellow fruitfulness’? I find the colours of autumn far more attractive than the greens of spring. Oh, I know we have the wonderful wild flowers then that fill the ditches and woodlands, but there’s something about the browns, yellows and reds that I love so much more. There again, once they fall off the trees you’ve got to rake the darn things up, haven’t you, and it often coincides with endless rain doesn’t it? That means mud. The darn lawn keeps on growing too;
30
must be down to global warming, I don’t remember having to mow the lawn in December years ago! Oh, and those blasted farmers, why do they have to cut their hedges just as I’m driving by? Great chunks of blackthorn sticking out of my tyres. (Well, yes, we do cut ours here on the farm too… but that’s different.) And what about those blocked up drains in the roads? And no pavements, and rain-filled potholes, and mud from tractors, and the smell of muck and slurry spreading, and corn dryers humming away all night! Did I say autumn was better? Of course there are others who find this time of the year a complete delight. Rams for instance. Now is the time for the boys to be released into the fields with their multitude of wives. Many of these boys will have in excess of a hundred ewes awaiting his pleasure. It’s no wonder he goes into the winter months with contentment and a much calmer nature! Who wouldn’t? Joking apart though, I do acknowledge that this season heralds those cold winter months to come. With the woods and fields bare and bleak; ground hard and rough under your feet, and even on those occasional watery sunny days, there’s still a heaviness that sends you back to the warmth of your home where you can shut the door on the starry chill. There I go again though, blathering on about deep winter and it’s still only October. Still, as any Cub Scout will tell you: be prepared. Ah, yes, about that donkey’s tail. We had for a long time a wooden donkey pinned to the side of the barn with a long and luscious tail flowing behind him. Every morning we would carefully study him to find out the weather for the day, and then consult the list of directions for interpreting what we saw. They were as follows: Tail hanging straight down: no wind. Tail horizontal: gales. Tail dry: no rain. Tail wet: rain. Tail white: snow. It never failed us! Talking of snow, I found this delightful poem the other day, relating to the white stuff that may soon be thankfully covering all the imperfections in my garden… I made myself a snowman, as perfect as could be, I thought I’d keep it for a pet, and let it sleep with me. I made it some pyjamas, and a pillow for its head. Then last night it ran away, but first it wet the bed. So, there you are folks. Something to look forward to. Told you this was lighter. Happy autumn! John Nash

Billingshurst Primary School pupils lead initiative to tackle traffic safety “Drive and park as if the police are watching!”
I
t is an issue faced by most schools: the congestion and parking during drop-off and pick-up times that put children in danger and make life hard for local residents. Concerns were raised by residents and parents of children at Billingshurst Primary School, but with no power to enforce the law, the school felt something needed to be done to alleviate the problem. Now the children have undertaken their own campaign to tackle the issue by expressing concerns in their own voice, with the hope that this will persuade people to be considerate on the roads and walk to school whenever possible. In September local residents were invited to the school to help launch the initiative alongside the pupils. A meeting of the School Council, run by the children, reported that many do not feel safe having to cross the road from behind badly parked cars. They were concerned about having to walk into the road when cars block the pavement – especially when parents are still driving around looking for parking spaces. Carpenters, because it is a series of cul-de-sacs is not easy to see into from the one entrance on Station Road which encourages the parents to come in just to seek a space. This causes much of the fraught parking situation about which the children and residents are concerned. In response, the children surveyed the views of local residents and classmates and produced a programme of actions, starting with a poster competition to design a banner for the school. Ella Costelloe and Ryan Cooper, representatives of the School Council commented, “We all thought this was one of the main problems we faced. We were worried about our lollypop man as he nearly got run over and many of us don’t feel safe around all the cars. We stood up in assembly and asked everyone to design a poster and a campaign slogan for the banner. School Councillors
32
from Key Stage 1 and 2 selected each other’s winner. We hope it will help the parents to think about our safety; they should listen to us because we’re school children.” Lesley Wilding, Chair of the Carpenter’s Residents’ Association, commented, “The banners are brilliant and we hope the minority of those who cause the issues take notice. We’re very encouraged by the initiative and can see the School Council have worked very hard on the children’s behalf. We recognise the difficulties of getting children to school and finding parking, and as lots of schools in the region are up to capacity this issue is ever more pressing. However, it is a question of safety, kindness and general consideration, such as not blocking access. We would like to encourage more people to walk to school.” Miss Williamson, Headteacher at Billingshurst Primary School, commented, “Our priority is the safety of our pupils and consideration of our local residents who struggle with this on a daily basis, and it is our hope that the message will have more impact and power to persuade as it comes directly from the children. We were keen to involve local residents so that everyone can see we are working together to make our community better and affect change. The banners and posters are now on display outside the school, and a letter has been distributed to explain what the campaign is about, why it is needed and what we want to achieve.” Ben Pody, Director at Auto Sussex, sponsors of the banners, commented, “We are delighted to be able to support this campaign and promote road safety at the school.” Winners of the poster competition were Henry Wilmington from Key Stage 1 and Connor Jenkins and Josh Davies from Key Stage 2. Weald School pupils celebrate their A-level results
T
he 17th of August saw The Weald School buzzing with excitement as students opened their A-level results and, once again, the school celebrated another set of simply superb results. A record 17% of all grades were A*s, and the pass rate for all courses was 99%; 56% of grades were A*-B and 77% of grades were A*-C. Headteacher Peter Woodman said, “It has been a tremendous pleasure to watch students get their results and see that their hard work over the last two years has paid off. We are particularly proud of our results across the entire ability range and we are delighted also to see so many students gain the top grades. Well done to students, staff and parents!” The school achieved a notable success with one student being accepted at Cambridge University. Freddie Exwood, 2A*s and 2 As, will go on to study Mathematics. Other noteworthy successes included Kyo Kaneko, with 2A*s and 2As, who will study Mathematics at Warwick University; Ben Ansell, 3A*s and 1A, who will study Mechanical Engineering at Bath University; Megan Allerton, 2A*s and 1A, who will study Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College; Alex Deng, 2A*s and 1A, who will study Medicine at
Nottingham University; Fran Froughi, 3A*s, who will study Mathematics at Durham University and Sabrina Forrester, 1A* and 3As, who joined as an overseas student from South Africa in 2014 and who is taking a year out to work as a teaching assistant at The Weald before embarking on a Medicine degree at Exeter University. Head of Sixth Form, Tom Backshall, said, “About 80% of our students will go onto university and all of those who wished to go have been offered a place, with the vast majority getting onto their first choice courses. “While we are thrilled with our headline figures and congratulate the students going to some of the major Russell Group universities, we are just as pleased when students achieve their target grades and gain entry to their course of choice wherever it is across the country. This morning was really uplifting to see that the hopes and dreams of so many students have come to fruition.” Sarah Edwards, Deputy Headteacher Photo: Students jump for joy at their results!

Parasite control in dogs and cats
I
n our temperate climate parasite control is a year round issue. The most common parasites to infect cats and dogs are fleas, ticks and worms and prevention is better than cure. Fleas. Although the colder winter weather can slow down the flea population outside they can still thrive in our centrally heated homes, so controlling these parasites is a must. These insects are picked up from the environment where other infested animals have been. They feed on their host’s blood and lay eggs which drop off your pet and contaminate your home. One flea can lay vast numbers of eggs which survive in the household for up to two years. Once these eggs hatch your home will be contaminated with a high population of fleas. Just a few fleas can become a huge infestation with a very short time. Fleas also transmit one of the dog tapeworms as well as causing intense irritation and scratching. Some dogs will become sensitised or allergic to flea saliva leading to a syndrome called ‘flea allergic dermatitis’. Signs of flea infestation include excessive scratching especially around the ears, nibbling around the base of the tail, excessive grooming in the case of cats and in bad cases or very sensitive pets fur may be lost and you may notice red, raw areas of skin aka flea allergy dermatitis. You may also notice gritty black specks on the skin, if you take some of these specks and pop them on damp tissue you will see they will run red; these are flea droppings, made from digested blood – Yuk! To clear a flea infestation you MUST treat your home (and car if your pet travels in it) as well as your pet. A good insecticidal spray with an insect growth regulator included will help get on top of fleas in the home and using a spot-on treatment for your pet will get to work killing adult fleas. Speak to your vet or an animal health adviser regarding treatment and avoid products from the supermarket shelf. NEVER use flea products intended for dogs on cats as they can be highly toxic leading to the cat becoming very ill or in some cases death. This is why it’s best to seek qualified advice. Don’t expect the problem to disappear overnight, it can take several weeks to get an infestation fully under control – flea pupae are annoyingly tough little things! Ticks. Ticks can be found anywhere that wildlife goes

(e.g. pheasants, blackbirds, hedgehogs, badgers, foxes, squirrels and deer), where livestock grazes (e.g. cows and sheep), and where the vegetation (e.g. grasses, heather, bracken, trees or garden shrubs) is sufficiently dense enough to provide a higher level of humidity that ticks need to survive. This can include town parks and gardens. Ticks are well known to carry diseases such as Lyme’s Disease, which can be transmitted to humans so be careful to check yourself after walking in tick risk areas. They can also cause abscesses especially if the mouthparts are left in the skin upon trying to remove them. Ticks are more abundant in late spring to early summer, and again during autumn. However, they can be active all year round, even on mild winter days (above 3.5°C), including when snow is on the ground. Check your pet on a daily basis for tick infestation. There are products available to help prevent ticks as well as fleas. A tick remover is a must have for pet owners. Worms. Worm control is vitally important especially if there are children in your home. Even healthy looking animals can be carrying worms. Some types of worms can be spread between pets and people and can cause diseases so treating pets on a regular basis is a must. Roundworms are very common in puppies and kittens so they need to be treated even before they leave the breeder’s premises. Kittens and puppies under six months of age should be treated for roundworms on a monthly basis. Pets pick up roundworms by swallowing the eggs which get left in the environment after being shed in the faeces of an infected animal. Tapeworms need the flea to act as an intermediate host, hence why animals with a flea infestation will often have a tapeworm burden as well and should be treated for both parasites. Tapeworm segments can sometimes be seen in the faeces. Lungworm is becoming more common and slugs and snails are the host; this parasite can be fatal to pets and veterinary advice should be sought on prevention and treatment. Fall for autumn colours
S
ee what I did there in the title? Terrible pun I know but I couldn’t resist. Back in the ’Nineties I travelled to the White Mountain region of the USA to experience the Fall firsthand. My husband still jokes that it’s the only time in my life I’ve ever been speechless! Clear blue skies, golden sun and hyper-saturated foliage colours gave the impression that the whole New Hampshire landscape was on fire. The effect was unutterably beautiful. Back home in the UK I was a woman on a mission. I had to capture some of that beauty for my own plot. Through research I discovered that the quality of autumn colour in the New Hampshire region depends on two things: the combination of tree species and the climatic conditions. The sugar maple, red oak, mespilus and viburnum are the trees responsible for the famous vivid red and purple hues of the Fall but their colourful magic is dependant on warm sunny days followed by cool nights where the temperature doesn’t drop below 7-8°C. So now I had two problems. No way could I guarantee perfect weather conditions in the UK and then there was the small issue of space… the smallness of the space being the issue! I would not be able to shoe-horn a Red Oak or a Sugar Maple into my suburban garden. So I hit the books and garden centres and gradually I compiled a list of solid autumn performers which

will put on a dazzling display regardless of the British climate. Now my garden is brim full of glorious, fiery autumn hues and with a little planning and my ‘approved’ list you too can bring a little of the Boston Falls to British suburbia. Rachel Leverton
Japanese maples. Varieties of Acer palmatum – both green and purple – colour well and are small enough for most gardens. They do prefer acid soil so if you live on lime they perform better in a pot. They need shelter from chilly winds, which can scorch their leaves. Dogwood (Cornus alba). The leaves begin to turn pink in late September and you also have the benefit of bright red or yellow whippy stems afterwards, depending on the variety. Euonymus alatus. A quirky plant which has corky, winged outgrowths on its stems. This is a quiet plant for most of the year but produces the most brilliant crimson leaves in autumn plus purple – red fruits which split to form four winged lobes with a bright orange seed in the centre. There is also a compact variety which only grows to 1m so is suitable for small gardens. Berberis thunbergii and its varieties are around 2m tall, make a great hedge and take on spectacular hues around October just before the leaves fall. Coloured leafed heathers. These work hard all year but are at their best when burnished by the autumn chill.

Blooming success for St Catherine’s Hospice Open Gardens
G
arden gates across Sussex have been swinging open this summer to welcome the local community into exclusive, private gardens as part of St Catherine’s Hospice Open Gardens. Between April and the end of August, 44 gardens across Sussex and Surrey opened to support their local hospice. Thanks to their collective generosity, donations blossomed to more than £28,000 – the most money ever raised from an Open Garden season. As part of the Sussex openings, residents explored Warnham Park’s beautiful gardens which owners Caroline and Jonathan Lucas have opened since 2010. This year was their most successful opening yet raising £3,500 for St Catherine’s. Caroline said, “We've supported the hospice over many years in memory of my father who died in 1972 when there was no hospice care available for him. We so admire the quality end of life care that St Catherine’s gives to so many people these days.” At Birchanger in Balcombe, St Catherine’s voluntary fundraising group, Haywards Heath Friends, served up tea and cake as visitors enjoyed Birchanger’s seven-acre garden and woodland. also took part in Open Gardens. She opened her garden three times in support of the hospice and raised more than £2,000. Dee said, “I’m delighted to raise funds for St Catherine’s as they were a great support to my husband and me when he needed their care a few years ago. By opening my garden, I’m able to support the hospice and ensure they can continue to be there for other people in the community like they were for us.” In Forest Row East Grinstead, owners of Wych Warren House, Mary Franck and Colin King invited the community to enjoy their garden and donated more than £800 from refreshment sales to support their local hospice. St Catherine’s provides expert care to local people living with a terminal illness across Sussex. By allowing the public a unique insight into their private space, Open Garden hosts are helping ensure St Catherine’s can continue to provide their local community with this expert care. Children in Need – Friday 17th November Please make a note in your diaries to come to the Billingshurst Centre in Roman Way to support our Coffee Morning for Children in Need; Friday 17th November between 10.30am – 12.30pm. If you are able to bake a cake or donate a raffle prize then that would be wonderful. Please keep an eye on our website or social media pages for more information nearer the time. Fireworks Event The annual Billingshurst Fireworks is due to take place at Jubilee Fields on Saturday 21st October. (See inside back cover for full details.)
Access for Emergency Services The Council often receives complaints about inconsiderate parking. When parking, it is important to not only think about the safety of road users and pedestrians but to also consider the needs of our emergency services should they need to get somewhere quickly.
Service and are limited in what they can do. Please look after yourselves and help vulnerable or elderly neighbours. It is worth considering keeping a good stock of candles/matches and spare torch batteries in case of power cuts and some non-perishable food stocks if you might be unable to leave your home in adverse weather.
All Cisterns Go! The long-anticipated refurbishment of the Public Conveniences in Mill Lane will get underway on the 25th September. The £60+k project, largely being met by S106 funds released by HDC with the difference being met by the Parish Council, will see the existing layout removed and replaced by three modern unisex units. Designed to be easier to keep clean and maintain and be less conducive to anti-social behaviour, the Parish Council sees the work as vital to helping ensure that the Village Centre remains attractive to residents and visitors alike. Unfortunately there is no alternative provision planned during the work, which should take several weeks.
Winter Maintenance The Parish Council has a Winter Maintenance plan in place which links volunteers with those who need help during severe weather conditions. Please consider joining our volunteer list if you are able, and join the ‘help required’ list if you might need a helping hand. Our volunteers are able to offer help with snow clearing, shopping, prescription collections and similar. The Parish Council and its volunteers are keen to offer help to those who may need it but are not an Emergency
Please see the Winter Maintenance booklet for more information and for details of how to register for help or how to volunteer – copies are available in the library, the Billingshurst Centre, GP surgery and from the Parish Office. Large bags of salt/grit will be delivered to various locations throughout the Parish in the event of heavy snowfall. This is for use on the public highways and is NOT for private paths and driveways.
Upcoming Meetings (October) 5th: Planning & Environment Committee 11th: Neighbourhood Plan Committee 18th: Property Committee 25th: Billingshurst Centre and F&GP Committees

Our Community Volunteers – Sophie Nataraj
“B
igger and better each year” is how Sophie Nataraj describes Loxfest, formerly the Loxwood Beer and Music Festival, which is the main fundraiser for Loxwood Pre-School, and has grown into an important and highly successful community event. Over the course of a day, Loxfest welcomes around 1,000 people, and has raised £10,000 for the Pre-School this year. Sophie, who is one of a four-strong committee of parent trustees for the PreSchool, originally hails from Yorkshire but arrived in Loxwood three years ago (via London and Cranleigh) where she joined the committee in order to get more involved with the community when her son started at the Pre-School. It has proved both a wonderful opportunity to make friends as well as an interesting and enjoyable challenge for her, to work alongside the other trustees (which include her husband, Pete) with support from the other parents to produce the event. Sophie, who has a career as a secondary school teacher and currently works at Cranleigh, also spent time working for Raleigh International both at home and abroad, and loves the fact that the trustees all bring different skills and backgrounds to the organisation of the event. The popularity of the event, which is attended by most of the village as well as many others from
further afield, makes it more than a school fundraiser, bringing the community together for a day of entertainment from both established favourites, such as Iron Tyger, and newcomers, like Hollie Rogers. There is a range of food stalls at the event, from a vintage tea bus to a curry stall, as well as other activities and retail outlets. The money raised supports the Pre-School with projects like their new playground, but the event also contributes to the community, for example, the recent donation made to North Hall for audiovisual equipment which will allow the Hall to have film nights. Loxfest has also enjoyed local support in the form of sponsorship from Showerpower and Surrey and Sussex Tree Surgery, and the recent re-branding to reflect the growing trend for family-friendly festivals, was supported by Loxwood-based graphic designers, Silverback. Plans for next year’s event on 12th May are already underway and include plans for a second acoustic stage. For more details, contact enquiries@loxfest.co.uk.
