S
eptember is of course Back To School month. To mark the end of summer we have an autumnal recipe and two ads for Halloween! As I write this it is scorching hot and the last thing I want to think about is autumn. But when you read this the leaves will be turning, the nights will be drawing in and, well, you know the rest! As ever, there are a lot of events taking place. The Big Nibble in Horsham on 7th September (page 8) is a great way to support small local companies selling some lovely products. And while in Horsham why not visit the newly opened Poppy Field (page 7). Baked Apples with Walnuts A spicy twist on an autumn favourite
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Carefully cut a 2.5cm (1in) slice from the top of each apple and set aside. Using an apple corer or a small, sharp knife, remove the core from each apple. 2. Place the walnuts, raisins, sugar, butter, and cinnamon into a food processor and pulse several times, to produce a coarse, textured mixture. If you don't have a food processor, chop the walnuts roughly and mix thoroughly with the other ingredients. 3. Stuff each apple cavity with the mixture and replace the reserved tops. Arrange the apples in a shallow, ovenproof dish so that they're upright, and then fill the pan 1cm (½in) deep with water. 4. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the flesh is tender when pierced with the point of a knife. When slightly cooled, carefully remove the apples from the baking dish, transfer them to serving plates, and serve hot with crème fraiche or ice cream.
Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 30 minutes. Serves 4
INGREDIENTS 4 large Golden Delicious apples 1 splash lemon juice 85g walnuts, halved 1 tbsp raisins 1 tbsp soft light brown sugar 25g butter ¼ tsp ground cinnamon

Horsham Commemorates WW1 Centenary
s outlined in last month’s Village Tweet, at the beginning of August Horsham commemorated the centenary of the start of the First World War with a number of special events to mark the occasion. 100 years ago on the 5th August the town wondered what was going to happen next, 11pm the night before War had been declared and Horsham, like the nation, was on a war footing. On Sunday 3rd August over 100 people went to a special Evening song service at St Mary’s Church, hearing readings, music and an apt sermon by the vicar. A hundred years ago the Church was at the vanguard of encouraging people to enlist, explaining the reasons for the war, very much of the time. Today the church explored the more nuanced approach we share of the conflict and today’s troubles. At 10.30am on 4th August the Chairman of the Council, Cllr Brian O’Connell and Dianne Loates, President of Horsham Royal British Legion placed an arrangement of English garden flowers on the town’s newly listed war memorial. The flowers were chosen to reflect the fact that during the war those who fought often commented on their home life, a reminder of what they were fighting for. This was followed by the opening of an exhibition in the Park Barn, which used powerful images of the war to give context to the day.
Throughout the war exhibitions were used to encourage and motivate the townsfolk to give or offer moral support, so it was apt that this exhibition was used to give insight in to what was being commemorated. The Chairman then led a party of local dignitaries with lighted candles to the recently created Poppy Field. This feature of the park has a new carved commemorative bench and stand erected to hold lighted candles that will be a centre for reflection throughout the next four years, enabling families to remember and reflect on the sacrifice. Later that evening, an audience of mixed ages enjoyed an evening of music at the Drill Hall, a building paid for by the officers of the Royal Sussex Regiment for the men who survived and those who will serve in the future. The concert, entitled ‘From the people of Horsham to the People of Horsham’, had members from five bands attending and was a fitting end to a day of commemoration. Along with memories of the day the publication of a free commemorative booklet supported by local business has enabled £1,000 to go to the RAF Benevolent Fund. Horsham’s Big Nibble – The Festival for All Food Enthusiasts
T
his year’s Big Nibble Food and Drink Festival in Horsham Town Centre on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September is set to be the best ever with even more interest and fun for all. ‘The Big Nibble’ is a local food and drink spectacular, organised by Horsham District Council in conjunction with Horsham Markets, and is the launch event for the District-wide Food and Drink Festival, which runs from 6th September to 5th October. The core of the festival’s regional reputation is the quality of the twoday Big Nibble Festival Market packed with the best local food and drink producers around. Saturday’s Big Nibble menu sees the return of the brilliant Live Cookery Theatre showcasing demonstrations from a selection of Horsham’s top chefs and local producers including last Year’s Master Chef – The Professionals winner Stephen Edwards. This is complemented by the annual Horsham Beer Trail which this year starts from Piries Bar and finishes at The Black Jug, both sponsors. Extending the appeal on the Saturday to a younger audience (and their parents), local food event company, ‘Food Rocks’, bring ‘The Little Nibble’, a new children’s food festival on Horsham Forum which will be full of havea-go activities designed to be both fun and educational. Sunday’s Big Nibble will feature the second Great

Horsham Bake Off on the Forum, along with an open air tea room and supporting stalls. Visitors to the Festival will be able to meander among the many vibrant stalls and shop for delicious breads, cheeses, cakes, confectionary, chutneys, beers and ciders plus many other tempting products. A fantastic range of mouthwatering street food is promised adding to the ever expanding range of restaurants, cafés, delis and many other specialist food shops that are making Horsham such an exciting destination for hungry visitors and serious food enthusiasts alike. Marion Carter from Horsham Markets said, “We are thrilled to be working with the Council again on the Big Nibble. This will be our fourth year bringing together local producers. Demand for stalls has been better than ever.” “Horsham has become a real food hub with our weekly local produce markets on Thursdays and Saturdays together with a fantastic choice of restaurants, specialist food shops and delis. The Big Nibble and the District’s Food and Drink Festival is a great opportunity to discover all that Horsham and the District has to offer.” To find out more about the markets, visit www.horshammarkets.co.uk Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council Photo: Sussex Faire will be present once again to tempt you!

Time to whip out the knitting needles and get crafty! Age UK and innocent launch The Big Knit
A
ge UK Horsham District is calling on nimble-fingered knitters across the district to whip out their wool and needles and create little woolly hats for the innocent Big Knit and help older people keep warm, safe and well in winter. The woolly hats will adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from February 2015. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help support older people during winter. Age UK Horsham District is calling on local knitters to get as many hats as possible to them by 30th October and help make this a reality. Last year the people of Horsham District submitted over 1,700 hats. This year the local charity has a target of 4,000 which would raise £1,000 to support local residents. Janice Leeming, Chief Executive at Age UK Horsham District, said, “Winter can be a really difficult time of year for many older people, so it’s really important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds to support those in later life. The funds raised help to fund services like Information and Advice that last year unlocked over £1million in unclaimed benefits for people in the district or our Home Visiting service that arranges regular visitors to drop in on those who are isolated. Both services are completely free and extremely important, especially through winter. The Big Knit is one way that
people can contribute.’ One such committed knitter is Win Kurn (pictured). Win celebrated her 99th birthday in August and is partially sighted, but she doesn’t let this stop her taking part. She learns the patterns and produces the hats purely from memory. With the help of her daughter Carol, she has already knitted 50 hats ready for this year’s campaign. Knitters can find information and download patterns from www.ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk or contact their community fundraiser on (01403) 260560 or email communityfundraiser@ ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk. Non-knitters can become a Friend of Age UK Horsham District and setup a small regular donation. Use the details above for more information on this. You can post pictures of your knitted creations on www.facebook.co/ AgeUKHorshamDistrict then drop the hats into Age UK’s Lavinia House offices behind the Drill Hall on Denne Road by 30th October. You can also drop them at the Cloth Store in the Carfax or Knitters Corner on Bartholomew Way. Both of these shops are getting involved with the campaign this year so contact them for Big Knit sessions taking place. Lawrie Mallyon

Saddle up for Air Ambulance Double 100 bike ride
L
ife-saving charity Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance is appealing for cyclists to sign up for this year’s Double 100 Cycle Challenge and help save lives at night. The 100-mile or 100km bike ride is to be held on Sunday, 28th September, to mark the first anniversary of the launch of the night flying service. Last year’s event raised over £12,000 and organisers are aiming to double its success this year with two starting points at the helicopter bases at Marden and Redhill. Both new circular routes will include all counties covered by the Air Ambulance and this year’s Double 100 has kindly been backed by main sponsor Fidelity Worldwide Investment. Corporate Citizenship Manager Vicki Haxton said, “Fidelity is delighted to be supporting the Double 100 Cycle Challenge and helping to raise money for this incredibly worthy cause. “The air ambulance is a vital service in this area and we recognise the significant contribution they make towards saving lives in our community. We are looking forward to many of our employees participating in the event.” Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance launched
its night flying service last September in a move expected to benefit a further 400 to 500 patients a year. The charity now has to raise an extra £1million a year to fund the cost of a 24-hour service, up from £5million to £6million. The 2014 Double 100 has also been sponsored by Howard Cundey Chartered Surveyors and Estate Agents, and supported by the Asda Foundation, Warburtons and Southern Water. The ride is open to regular and occasional cyclists including individuals and teams with feeding stations along the scenic route. The first 200 riders to sign up will receive a special Air Ambulance jersey. To register go to www.kssairambulance.co.uk/ involved/double100. Sussex Air Ambulance set to benefit from local marathon
T
his year will see the 32nd running of the Barns Green Half Marathon. At 11am on Sunday 28th September hundreds of runners will begin the 13mile race, streaming through Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater in what is one of the most scenic races in the country. Once again numerous charities, local organisations and youth groups are set to benefit from the event and this year’s chosen charity is Sussex Air Ambulance. This vital charity exists to relieve sick and injured people in South East England and surrounding areas by providing a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and Air Ambulance Service for the benefit of the community. The service is an independent charitable healthcare provider working with the Ambulance Service. It is not part of the NHS and is funded almost entirely by voluntary donations. Community Fundraising Officer Michelle Woodland said, “We are extremely grateful to the organisers of the Barns Green Half Marathon for choosing us as their official charity for 2014. “Partnerships such as this are absolutely vital in order to raise the £6million per year we need to provide the service.” The Barns Green Half Marathon, which is once again sponsored by Berkeley Homes, appoints an official charity each year which collects money in the car-parks and on the Green on race day and the race committee is delighted to be able to support such an outstanding charity. One of the Barns Green Half Marathon’s partners, Christ’s Hospital School, is also supporting the Sussex Air Ambulance this year and pupils from the school will be collecting for the charity in the three main race car-parks on race day. The charity was established in 1989, originally as the Kent Air Ambulance Trust, to provide an air ambulance service for the people of Kent. 2005, saw the introduction
of doctors on board, and in 2007, the Trust expanded its service and launched a second helicopter to cover the counties of Surrey and Sussex. The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust’s state-of-the-art Helicopter Emergency Medical Service aircraft now operates 365 days a year, out of bases at Marden in Kent and Redhill in Surrey and are capable of delivering crews anywhere in its region within 20 minutes. Occasionally, weather prevents the helicopter flying, so the crews also have rapid response vehicles to maximise their availability. Each helicopter is crewed by an experienced Pilot, Doctor and Paramedic, who are trained in advanced pre-hospital care, which gives them the knowledge and skills necessary to assess and stabilise critically ill and injured adults and children. However, it is not just Sussex Air Ambulance that will benefit from the Barns Green Half Marathon. Each year hundreds of pounds are raised for different charities, local organisations and youth groups. Last year, the race raised around £15,000. In addition many of the runners taking part in the race also raise money for various charities and several local organisations, sports clubs and youth groups also receive donations for their help and support with the race organisation. Barns Green Half Marathon Chairman, Vernon Jennings commented, “We are delighted to have Sussex Air Ambulance as our official charity this year. This is a vital emergency service for our region and we hope that everyone who takes part in this year’s race or comes along to cheer on the runners will support the vital work that they do”. For more information on Sussex Air Ambulance, visit www.kssairambulance.org.uk Nigel Currie, Barns Green Half Marathon Committee

Going Loco Down in… Worthing!
T
Worthing Model Railway Club celebrates its 50th birthday
he Worthing Model Railway Club was founded in Shoreham by Sea in 1964 but in due course moved to Worthing. The clubroom is situated in the Broadwater district of Worthing with Wednesday and Thursday evenings the main nights when most members attend either for a chat, a cup of tea, a read of the model railway press or simply to construct layouts. The Club is celebrating its 50th this year and we hope our annual exhibition (see advert below) with 17 layouts booked to attend along with 12 traders will be enjoyed by all who attend. Refreshments will also be available.
At any one time there are at least six layouts under construction varying in gauge from ‘N’ (9mm) to ‘00’ (16.5mm). Conventional and modern control systems are used. The Club’s main exhibit at the exhibition uses Digital Command Control or DCC as it tends to be known. The control and sound of locomotives generated by this system is amazing. Some of our layouts have been the subject of articles in the model press and have represented the Club in many exhibitions around the country, including a trip to Scotland for a three-day exhibition. Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read September’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Night Circus — Erin Morgenstern “The circus arrives without warning… It is simply there when yesterday it was not.” So begins this adult fantasy novel. From the seductive opening you are drawn into the world of the circus. The mysterious circus owner, Prospero the Enchanter, otherwise known as Hector Bowen, is a magician and Le Cirque des Rêves is the greatest accomplishment of his career. Magic unfolds on every page as his circus and its assembled performers enchant and amaze its audience. Time moves differently in the circus, as the performers appear not to age. Acrobats perform without safety nets and the audience move from one spectacle to another, created by the illusionist who transforms tents on a whim. Fates intertwine as two young protégés must meet and compete on this unsuspecting stage. The ultimate bet will be decided after years of dedication and preparation. Set in America and Europe in the late 1800s this novel oozes with an era that never quite existed. A steampunk retelling of the Victorian age that you will wish you could visit. The language is poetic and evocative and you will find yourself longing for the day when the circus arrives near you without warning. You too will want to wear a red scarf and join the rêveurs.
Magic Tree House: Valley of the Dinosaur — Mary Pope Osborne Time travel. A quest to solve. Exciting adventures. This book for young readers who are growing in confidence has all of these and much more. The first of a series of books, it follows the adventures of Jack and Annie as they discover a magic treehouse in their neighbourhood. As the story begins Jack and Annie are chasing an imaginary monster into a nearby wood when they stumble across a solitary treehouse. Curiosity getting the better of them, they decide to explore and inside they find wonderful collection of books. Jack is drawn to a dinosaur book and before they know it the two children are transported back to the time of the dinosaurs. Full of fascinating facts this book will appeal to any budding palaeontologist. At ten chapters this is a nice introduction to reading without seeming too daunting. The sentence structure can be repetitive and simplistic, but I am assured by young readers that this is not a problem! There are currently sixteen books available in the series covering different time periods and geographic locations. These along, with an interactive website, promise to engage and educate young readers for many a long school holiday.

Diary of a ‘Commuter’ Smallholder The continuing diary of Michaela Giles, a Billingshurst smallholder
I
have been well and truly bitten by the Boer goat bug. We attended the Smallholder Show at Ardingly as members of the West Sussex Smallholders and took pigs and Boer goats to exhibit. In another marquee were the most adorable Boer goats being shown by a breeder from Newdigate, so I arranged to go and visit with view to buying one, possibly two? So, I of course purchased four and after a bit of time in quarantine they’re now integrated into my existing herd. If that wasn’t enough one of the does Alan aged one we purchased last year gave birth to one of the cutest animals ever, a little boy kid named Alan. How we will eat him in a few months’ time when he throws himself at us for a cuddle remains to be seen! We did very well at the Great Yorkshire Show with our British Saddleback pigs with Reserve Female Champion and Reserve Female Breeding Champion among the titles. However, someone made us an offer we couldn’t refuse
show me the pest… …I’ll do the rest
and so we didn’t actually bring her home, just the rosettes. The Rare Breed Show at Singleton also saw our son Oliver take Champion White pig and Reserve Supreme of the show with his huge Middle White sow called Brooke. It has been a month for famous people at Tedfold, not only did I manage to get Liz Shankland of Country Smallholding/Haynes smallholding book series at the Smallholder Show; on one pig course we hosted one of the delegates looked vaguely familiar, I didn’t think much of it until he tweeted to week old! his 94,000-plus Twitter fans what he had been up to – it turns out he was a presenter from Big Brother and Game of Thrones. I must thank him as our twitter account @tedfoldpigs received lots of attention for a while! I have decided to sell our flock of sheep and although very little goes wrong with them, I would rather concentrate on the Boer goats as a niche market and get to cuddle lots of Alan’s! Music for a Summer’s Evening at St Nicolas a Success!
O
n Thursday 24th July a concert was held in St Nicolas Church, Itchingfield (as advertised in July’s Village Tweet) to raise funds for the provision of kitchen and toilet facilities in the church. The weather was fine, the newly repaired church was decorated with displays of seasonal flowers and candles and an audience of 58 experienced a diverse selection of captivating and entertaining music. Everyone was welcomed by Mr David Redston who thanked all for contributing to the next venture for the church. He also thanked the performers and David and Pippa Heritage of Barns Green Village Stores for their sponsorship of the refreshments. He congratulated and thanked the fundraising and florist teams who had supported Pip McBean in making the event possible. There followed a selection of delicate and expressive guitar solos from around the world, performed by Mark Jennings of Christ’s Hospital. Mark played compositions by Villa Lobos, Astor Piazzolla, Silvius L Weiss, JS Bach, an arrangement by Bonnel of a concerto by Aranquez, the Fandanguillo by Turina and finally the well known ‘Recuerdos De La Alhambra’ by Tarrega. His playing
was absolutely captivating. After a short break, the tempo and character of the performances changed markedly when the family and friends of Mr Gary Holder played and sang a selection of songs and music from the two World Wars; featuring Gary on his double bass and accompanied on keyboard and singing by his son Tom. Their selection of some poignant wartime songs, popular music, jazz and familiar songs brought vivid memories of those trying times. Gary and his son were joined at the end of their session by Gary’s father on accordion and a friend on violin, playing English country music, accompanied by the audience with enthusiastic clapping, foot tapping and singing! An absolutely wonderful evening was rounded off with a plentiful supply of drinks, tasty canapés, much chatter and a chance to see the plans for the church’s appeal. Many thanks are due to everyone who contributed to a fabulous evening where over £400 was raised towards the St Nicolas Fabric Fund. Tony West, Church Secretary Floral display in St Nicolas Church. Butterfly Garden at Ingfield Manor
I
nspired and organised by Tony Priestley, the outgoing President, the Billingshurst Rotary Club have been running a competition throughout the summer, in twelve local schools, in association with Newbridge Nurseries. The Rotary Club gave each school a tyre, a folder donated by Staples, and money to spend on a complete caterpillar hatching kit, while Nigel Wait of Newbridge Nurseries gave each school an identical packet of seeds for flowers to attract butterflies, and donated a shield to be awarded to the winner. The winning school was Shipley which will also receive £100 to spend on books, and Nigel, who was a judge along with Eric Clark, has kindly donated a voucher for £50 to the runner up at Slinfold, with further
26
vouchers worth £25 to William Penn and Ingfield Manor Schools. When the judges arrived at Ingfield Manor, they were delighted to realise that the Painted Lady Butterflies were about to be released. When asked why they had taken so long we were told that the children had enjoyed the whole process so much that they had sent off for a second kit. The raised bed meant that the children in wheelchairs could help tend the flowers, and they had also had an input into the folder logging the progress of the caterpillars through to when the butterflies were released. Blooms from Bulbs
I
t may seem early to begin planning next year’s spring and summer colour, but it is essential to get bulbs planted this month (with the exception of Tulips which should be planted in November). The history of bulbs can almost be traced back to the beginning of man, when they would most certainly have been used as food. We know that the ancient Egyptians grew onions and that potatoes (technically tubers) have been cultivated in South America for thousands of years. I wonder what these early people would think to the use of our ornamental onions, such as Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, grown for their show stopping flowers! Most of the usual subjects including Allium bulbs can be planted right now, and range in price from the very cheap tiny bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, to the more rare and expensive giant heads of Allium schubertii. Most kinds of Alliums enjoy a position in full sun, but if you have a very dry and shaded border such as that under a large tree, then try Allium ursinum, more commonly known as wild garlic. Its beautiful lush, low growing green foliage makes a great foil for a woodland setting, as well as producing a mass of white globular flowers borne on short stems. When buying and planting bulbs, try and follow these general rules: • Wear gloves when handling, as some are toxic and can cause skin irritations. • Try and buy them loose so you can feel them.

Give each a gentle squeeze and check they are firm. Reject any which are not, or appear to have shrivelled, and those showing any sign of mould (normally grey/blue in colour). • Reject any showing excess signs of growth, with either long or pale stems. Bulbs should not be showing any sign of growth, but a short tip is acceptable. • Damaged or split bulbs should not be selected. • Plant using a bulb planter, allowing a hole twice the diameter of the bulb and about three times the depth, but I would advise to research it as each variety is different. • Place a little bone meal in the hole for good root development. Bulbs can also be grown from seed. They take a good few years to flower, around five in my experience, but it’s very satisfying when they finally do and you can even have a go at cross pollinating to make your own varieties. Other favourites of mine are: Tulip ‘Prinses Irene’. An exquisite orange and purple flower. Narcissus ‘Thalia’. A white and scented daffodil. Galtonia. An imposing 60cm tall with grass like foliage and a 90cm high flower spike in white. Chionodoxa. With around 10 blue blooms per stalk, this is a small but cheery bulb. Talking Tack
O
ne of the most important purchases you will make after buying a horse is the tack. Tack is the collective name for the saddle, bridle, boots and other equipment your horse wears on a day-to-day basis for being ridden, driven or lunged. Traditional tack used to always be made of leather but nowadays there are many synthetic alternatives on the market which are easier to care for and cheaper to buy. Saddles. These may be made of leather, synthetic materials or even a mixture of both, the decision on which to purchase is a personal one, for a rider just hacking a few times a week with an odd local show may want to buy a synthetic saddle, whereas a showing buff would go for a more traditional leather style. Saddles also come in many different styles, from general purpose ideal for horses and riders doing a little bit of riding in many disciplines, to specialised close contact jumping saddles, there are also dressage saddles designed to hold the rider in the best position, and endurance saddles designed for comfort during long stints of riding. The most important thing to consider when purchasing a saddle is to make sure it fits both horse and rider. Owners are strongly advised to consult a professional saddle fitter before purchasing a saddle as a mistake can be painful, both in terms of the horse’s back and the owner’s wallet. Secondhand saddles can be reflocked to fit another horse provided the tree is the correct shape for the horse’s back, and new saddles can be made to measure from scratch. Make sure you try your new saddle thoroughly if you intend to jump, then jump in it while you try it, you don’t want to find out it slithers up the horses neck on landing after buying it! Please avoid buying cheap new saddles from internet auction sites; these are very cheaply made abroad and are horrific quality with some even verging on dangerous. Look for good quality well known makes if buying secondhand. Bridles. Again, these can be leather or synthetic and quality can vary hugely. As with saddles, avoid very cheap imported leather, the dye will often come out when it rains or the horse is sweaty as well as the leather stretching after use. Many tack shops sell decent quality English leather bridles at reasonable prices, and synthetic

ones can offer great value for money and can even be popped into the washing machine! These are popular with endurance riders. Fitting of bridles is also very important for the comfort of the horse, if you are unsure ask an experienced rider to show you the correct way to fit the bit to make sure the horse is comfortable in his mouth when being ridden. Bits. There is an enormous choice these days as things have moved on enormously since the choice of a snaffle or a Pelham! With a huge choice of styles of bit to suit all horses and riders for all disciplines you may have to try a few to find the one the horse is most comfortable with. Training aids and martingales are useful on some horses and may be recommended by your instructor to help for a while as the horse is learning the correct way of going. Training aids should never be relied on as a replacement for proper schooling though. Caring for your tack. Leather tack in particular must be well looked after to prolong its lifespan. All tack should ideally be cleaned after every ride, at the very least any sweat must be removed. Give your tack a thorough clean on a weekly basis, checking for any signs of wear and tear as you go. There are many products on the market aimed at cleaning and nourishing leather. Choose what suits your tack best, and take care with suede – patch test any product on an inconspicuous area first. Always store your tack in a clean, dry environment as dampness will result in mould growing on the leather, and NEVER dry off wet leather by a radiator or other heat source as this will damage the leather. If your saddle and bridle get soaked in the rain let them dry out naturally before using a good quality leather conditioner. If leather tack is cared for properly it will give many, many years of service. Synthetic tack really comes into its own on the care front as the most it requires is a good damp sponge and a thorough check of any stitching saving many hours of time on tack cleaning! Who likes a tipple? John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
T
hey say that over the last couple of decades or so we have become something of a nation of wine drinkers. I would argue that for donkey’s years we have imbibed this product of fermentation. It’s just that years ago we made the stuff ourselves. I refer of course to the ‘art’ of brewing Home Made Wine. Now, this liquid comes in many forms. It can, with luck, have the taste of heaven in its fruity depths, with the aroma and crystal clarity of the vintners finest. On the other hand though, it can deliver the feeling that your tonsils are under attack from a Brillo pad and your taste buds have surrendered to the inevitable and ceased permanently to function. Mind you, that doesn’t stop you finishing the bottle off, knowing full well that in the morning you will be convinced that your tongue has swollen to such an extent that it no longer really fits in your mouth, and you are probably going blind. I used to partake in the adventure myself. Years ago when finances were tight the cheapest way of obtaining the delights of the bottle was to attempt to make the stuff myself. It was great fun, and just on the odd occasion my efforts were not too bad. I do recall a rather tasty concoction that had as its main ingredient the saved contents of a multitude of tea-pot dregs. (This was of course before the days of the tea bag.) These were infused together with a cascade of sultanas, sugar and hot water. This was delicately sloshed into a spare bucket and a slice of toast which had been topped with yeast was floated on the surface. The whole thing was then relegated to the warmth of the airing cupboard and prayers were offered to Bacus. A few days later the toast was removed and the murky sludge that sat there gently emanating soft bubbles of encouragement was viewed with some distain. However, hope springs eternal, and after a week or so it started to settle to something more promising. It was gently syphoned off into bottles and the gore that remained in the bucket’s base

was discarded a safe distance from the house. It eventually tasted rather good! Ginger beer is another hazardous journey to be enjoyed by the more carefree amongst us. This stuff is first of all brewed in the normal ‘home’ way but is bottled before the liquid has finished its ‘working’. This is so the beer can continue to ferment in the bottle, thus producing the high fizz that this drink is notorious for. The accepted way is to use ex-lemonade bottles in the vain hope that they can take the alarming pressure that can build up. The bottle is then wrapped in a towel or blanket – just in case – and then stuffed under the bed as a further precaution. The resulting gurgles, rumbles and assorted noises that vibrate around the bedroom in the middle of the night can then safely be blamed on the brew, rather than the brewer, when the accusing elbow in the back hits you in the early hours. The odd bottle that reaches detonation point is also a sure way of livening up a long night as the bed lifts slightly to accommodate the pressure wave that is released inside the wrappings of the towel. My mother-in-law was a brewer too. Her most memorable effort was one that she made while still not quite up to Chevalier de Home Brew standard. The main ingredient is lost in the mists of time, but she added dried fruits to the mix to give body and sweetness while the fermentation took place. Once the airing cupboard had ceased to gurgle to any passing body, the liquid was strained off and the residual fruit was taken down the garden and deposited into the chicken run. It was only later in the day that she ventured down the path to investigate the row that was emanating from the run. You know the old adage about headless chickens – these were legless too. Completely sozzled. Squawking and falling over in equal amounts as they enjoyed all the benefits that only a good home brew can offer. Pickled chicken… now there’s a novelty. So, dear friends, have a go, get brewing. They say you can use virtually anything. Try it. P.S. I refuse to accept responsibility for any damage to person or property that may occur in the preparation of any such concoctions. So there! John Nash

Living with Laika – ‘Grazing!’
I
t’s amazing what some warmth and longer daylight hours can do to our plant life. Woodland tracks are becoming overgrown and lost, whole vistas are screened by green foliage and Laika can remain hidden from view for long periods as she scouts the landscape. Everything is in leaf and flower and the starkness of our holly and ivy winter countryside has disappeared. Pink-flowered blackberry bushes now cast protruding, prickly skeletal fingers into paths and tracks scratching, snagging clothes and fur. Our walkways are similarly blighted by these grabbing nasties which poke through hedges and shrubs restricting movement and narrowing passage. Take a stroll and see how overgrown our neighbourhood is with thick unkempt verges and a myriad of plant species sprouting from kerbs and drains! At the same time, homeowners appear to be unaware of their responsibilities as bushes push out from prim lawns thrusting unwanted foliage into pedestrian legs and providing extra target practice for dogs! The council needs to regain this land and attempt to oversee the work of the sub-contractors who fleetingly wave mowers and trimmers over our
road margins. Of course all of this extra vegetation does provide Laika with a selection of mouth-watering salad as we amble along. Not content with her frozen chicken wings breakfast and a healthy 1.2kg tin of tripe mix with a mixer for supper, Laika enjoys a snack of succulent leaves during the day and appears to be quite picky about the species of plant providing the delicacy and indeed is discerning about where she sources her veg from! She clearly prefers organic produce free from fertilizers and pesticides and obviously that which is untainted by male dog urine – Yuk! Yes, she will quite happily spend a few minutes imitating ruminants and foraging for a particular goody. I believe that her fondness for grass and leaves is perfectly normal and may even be a nutritional necessity and so I will continue to let her graze. As I mentioned in my last piece, Laika does receive lots of compliments as we take to the streets – “He’s lovely…”, “Isn’t he handsome…” and “How old is he?” Poor Laika – she must be quite mixed-up! At least she can go into Austen’s and get a treat! Ron Myal

Billingshurst Primary School’s Summer Fun Day hits new highs
B
illingshurst Primary School’s pupils, staff and their families enjoyed a record breaking Summer Fun Day on 5th July, raising £9,336 for the school. The total surpassed all expectations and will go towards the current development programme for the grounds, extending the recently installed play-zone for the children. The day was packed with lots of activities for all the family, from a giant 100ft assault course to the much anticipated Head Teacher and Deputy Bungee Run Challenge (top photo), with Miss Nicholls (deputy) this year’s winner . Entertainment was provided by the Billingshurst Dance Troop, with a performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and the school choir as well as Country Dancing. Visitors enjoyed smoothies from the Bike-It team (on a specially adapted ‘smoothie-bike’) provided by Fresh, Jengers Mead’s new grocery shop, as well as a variety of vegetarian food from local businesses Gingers Kitchen and Billy’s on the Road.
The star of the event was the school’s very own Great British Sewing Bee champion Lynda Lewis, who turned her talents to face-painting rather than fabric for the day (bottom photo). Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School comments, “Each year we are overwhelmed by the support for our Summer Fun Day. We didn’t think it was possible to beat last year’s total. However, with the generosity of our friends, families, sponsors, retailers and helpers we’ve set a new high. The funds benefit every child in our school; from funding trips within each year group to extending the outdoor play areas. We were delighted to see so many people having so much fun. Without the collaboration of staff, pupils and local businesses the Fun Day wouldn’t be such a big success so my thanks go to everyone who took part.” Kate Clifford on behalf of the BPSCA

New Fire-Fighters Straight into Action!
J
uly and August were the first couple of months that new fire fighters Tim and Matt (introduced in July’s Village Tweet) were able to respond to fire calls after successfully passing their training courses in July. With a few ‘shouts’ under their belts it didn’t take long for them to see what a fire can really do… One early Sunday morning we attended a house fire in Pulborough along with our neighbouring fire station at Storrington. At first, it was thought that the owners were still inside but after crews searched the building, it was identified that they were actually on holiday. This highlights the importance of telling a trusted neighbour that you are away, not only to keep an eye on the property but, if the worst happens and a fire breaks out, to help us gather as much information as we can on arrival. Training is all very well but now Tim and Matt
could see how violently fire can spread and they were shocked once the fire was under control and the damage soon started to become visible. A fire is always upsetting, but especially so when you return from holiday to find your house firedamaged, not to mention the damage that the water from our our hoses inevitably causes. Next up for the ‘new boys’ is our second Charity Car Wash of the year being held at Billingshurst Fire Station on Saturday 13th September from 10am4pm. Please come along and support a great charity that relies heavily on fundraising events to look after injured fire fighters and their families. We look forward to seeing you then. Nothing too muddy please! Dan Game Training is thorough and ongoing at Billingshurst Fire Station. Photo: Grahame Pearson

Little Tweeters! / Art
Of chickens, onions and pigs
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
Y
ou might ask yourself why there is such a strange title this month; if not, it doesn’t matter, I’ll tell you anyway. They all happen in the same place – the allotment patch of the little farm near Billingshurst. Up until the end of June you might remember the chickens roamed that area, queens of all they surveyed. Although the vegetable gardens were protected with walls of netting, they took devilish glee in breaching the walls in some way or another. That roaming came to an abrupt halt. Nature intervened. (“Thank God,” said Nanny fervently.) Because the mowers and strimmer were away for repair, the grass in that area had grown very tall, and the chickens loved it. They laid eggs in it, scratched it up and hid in it. One day Blackie was ‘lost’ for half a day but was found hiding behind the compost bin. But the long grass also hid a cunning and hungry fox. From her house Nanny could hear A GREAT COMMOTION of hens swearing and clucking at the top of their voices from the vege allotment. She paid no attention. (She was a city slicker after all). When she finally came out, one of the brown hens had disappeared. The next day there was another cacophony from the hens’ area. This time Nanny came out pronto but was too late. There was no sign of Figgy Pudding save for a trail of feathers into next door’s paddock. Izzy was broken hearted as she had chosen poor Figgy. A day or two later one of the remaining brown hens, traumatised by the events, clucked her last and was buried reverently by Izzie in the corner of the chicken run. The solitary hen was joined a week or so later by two more browns and two Figgy Pudding lookalikes bought at the Ardingly Smallholders Show. Everyone was pleased when they began to lay the very next day, albeit with rather small eggs. Now the chickens were no longer roaming, Nanny decided she had better weed the onion patch she had spent hours protecting with frames and vast swathes of black netting. Because she had made the frames too low, and she couldn’t be bothered crawling under to keep the ground free (not to mention risking being photographed in the process by Gary!), the weeds had ‘taken over’. She wished she’d heard the Bible parable about the weeds and wheat before she started, because pulling up the

weeds, and her size eights trampling, absolutely ruined the onion patch. There the poor onions lay denuded and broken. Once that happened, Sally smugly told her, they would not recover. Another gardening lesson learned the hard way. Never the less, despite the chickens’ forays in the spring, Nanny’s autumnal onions had grown and were beautiful and huge (well some of them). So she had to be happy with that. After Hettie and Humphrey had left to live in luxury at Fisher’s Farm (as relayed to you last month), Dottie moved into his ark and pen without any difficulty. The electric fence had long been turned off as the grass had grown too long around their pen and was shorting it out. Nanny decided she would take the opportunity to reroute the electric fence. She pulled it down, untangled it from the long grass and weeds, and started to rearrange it. Before long Grandad called her for lunch (when Grandad calls, you go) and then she fell asleep. When she went out to water the vege garden later , she found deep indentations in the onion patch (still uncovered) and in the compost bins. She thought that was odd but she did nothing about it. The next morning, when Mary and she were going to feed the pigs and let out the chickens, Twiglet met then at the gate and accompanied them back to the pig pen where she happily munched her breakfast. Nanny was very nervous now and determined to fix the fence. It took her one whole long hot morning to do it, and thinking the fence would be enough left Dottie and Twiglet to it. Two days later, Twiglet again met them at the gate for her breakfast. She had chewed her way through the wire and walked over it. That was enough for Nanny. A quick mend and the electric fence was switched on. As they left, they heard a raucous squeal behind them. Poor Dottie, seemingly as blind as a bat, had backed into the fence. Both pigs spent the rest of the day in the other ark, as far away as the electric fence as possible. Nanny had to show Mary how to switch the fence off and on because she fed the pigs in the afternoon. Grandad says Nanny is obsessed with her garden, but wouldn’t you be too when so many exciting things happen there? Yvonne Fleece Picture: the well known fox from ‘Chicken Licken’

Going remote with your IT support Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services
I
t’s fairly common that we get a call from a customer who needs help with their computer and as is normally the case when computers go wrong – it’s always urgent. And as much as we try to get to our customers as quickly as we can (for local customers we aim for same day, for those further afield it’s 24 hours), it’s not always possible to get to them straight away. However, there are times when we can respond and help within minutes and that’s by using remote desktop software. And it’s secure. We can’t just log in whenever we feel like it, you have to give us access each time. Anyway, for lots of reasons, we think remote desktop software is pretty useful and so we have put together a list of what we think are three of the best out there. Teamviewer. This supports Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, and iOS, and is free for personal use and it’s our favourite for ease of use. It sports useful features like wake-on-LAN to wake up a sleeping computer and put it back to sleep when you’re finished, file transfer capabilities, clipboard passthrough, support for connecting from mobile devices like phones or tablets, and more. Chrome Remote Desktop. This supports Windows and Mac OS X (and Linux, sort of), and is completely free for personal and commercial use.

It’s essentially a Chrome app that you have to install in Chrome on any computer you want to connect to. You’ll have to be logged in to Chrome on any computer you want to connect to as well, which is a bit of a pain, but the great thing is that it runs in your browser, is super-easy to set up, and it’s remarkably fast. It’s not packed with additional features, but if all you need is to do some quick, cross-platform troubleshooting or access some files remotely, it’s fast and free, and uses a web browser you probably already have installed. Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDC). Microsoft’s RDC protocol uses existing technologies within the operating system to give remote administrators the ability to connect from anywhere they need to, access their files, troubleshoot problems, or work with files and applications as though they were using the remote device. Enabling RDC on your home server and connecting directly to it over your LAN is much easier than downloading and setting up a third party tool. So if you find you need some IT support in a hurry, the first step is to see if we can help you remotely. Just call and we’ll be happy to see what we can do. Cranleigh Camera Club Do you enjoy taking photographs? If so, why not come along to Cranleigh Camera Club when its new season begins on 25th September. This first evening will be an informal one where you can find out more about what we do and how our programme may help you improve both your technical knowledge and technique. A few members will bring along some recent work, and you can find out more about the club over some refreshments. Don’t expect to be taught how to use your camera – though we’ll try to help you – but through talks, demonstrations and friendly critiques of your work you can learn to improve your photographic skills. It matters not whether you use a compact or more complicated camera, your mobile or a top of the range DSLR, everyone can improve. Just remember – photography should be fun! Meetings take place at the Baptist Church Hall, 262 High Street, Cranleigh, GU6 8RT at 8pm. There is plenty of free parking. Take a look at www.cranleighcameraclub.co.uk for further information including the forthcoming programme. Ann Smith, ARPS Publicity Secretary, Cranleigh Camera Club

Wey & Arun Canal Trust launch bridge appeal
T
he Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) has already restored a section of canal near Alfold, in Surrey, on the summit (highest) level next to Dunsfold Park airfield. Their next aim is to replace the causeway with a new bridge which at present blocks the through navigation for boats. But before that can happen the Trust needs to raise £700,000 and carry out some major engineering work. WACT hopes to raise £180,000 of the target for the Compasses Bridge project by the end of this year so that work to replace the existing concrete causeway can start on site in April 2015. “The initial funding target will allow us to complete the design and planning work and choose our contractor,” explains WACT chairman Sally Schupke. “We will then need to raise the next £290,000 by September next year to fund the construction phase and the final £230,000 to complete demolition and landscaping work that will enable us to reopen the navigation.” Completion of the project will result in a further 2km of
the canal being restored and create more opportunities for trip boats and for boating events. According to Sally, the work will also enhance the ‘green corridor’ and is all part of the Trust’s strategy to make significant progress in Surrey. “While the total cost of this work is a large sum, we are staging it over more than two years to match the sequence of construction and to maximise our opportunities to draw on a wide range of funding sources,” said Sally. If you would like to contribute to this element of the restoration being undertaken by WACT, which is one of three major projects currently underway, donations can be made via the website – www.weyandarun.co.uk or by sending a cheque payable to ‘Compasses Bridge appeal’, WACT, The Granary, Flitchfold Farm, Loxwood, West Sussex RH14 0RH. Cheques payable to ‘Wey & Arun Canal’ please. Sally Schupke, Chairman, WACT www.weyandarun.co.uk
