But now it’s September and with the days rapidly growing shorter it’s back to school and a return to normality. However, it’s by no means doom and gloom. In this packed issue you will find a plethora of activities and events to go to, most famously perhaps is the Barns Green Half Marathon. Walnut Stuffed Baked Apples Tasty and Seasonal

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 190°C / Gas mark 5. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, walnuts, raisins, butter, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves. 2. Slice about 1cm off the top of each apple. Use a corer or a sharp knife to remove the core and seeds from inside of each apple but take care not to go all the way through. Arrange the apples, cavity side up, in a ceramic baking dish. Fill each cavity with 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar-walnut mixture. Sprinkle remaining brown sugar-walnut mixture on top of apples. Pour the orange juice around apples. 3. Bake the apples for 30 to 40 minutes or until they are tender. Rotate the baking dish halfway through the cooking time. Spoon the juices in the dish over apples and serve warm with ice cream or crème fraîche.

Join St Catherine’s Hospice for an oar-some Dragon Boat Festival

t Catherine’s Hospice annual Dragon Boat Festival is bursting back into Tilgate Park with a splash! Taking place on Sunday 8th September, this free, action packed fun day is guaranteed to be a great day out! The thrilling event, which is in its 17th year, is a popular one in many of the local community’s calendars. The racing kicks off around 10am with plenty to keep you and your family and friends entertained all day. Come along and cheer on over 30 teams, made up of local businesses, as they sail across Tilgate Lake and race to become Dragon Boat Champions 2019. For those relaxing on the shorelines, try your luck at traditional fête games like hook a duck, tin can alley and the popular garden tombola. Spring into action on giant inflatables, get glittered up with tattoos or glitter hair, take some snaps in our photo booth, and tuck into tasty food from onsite food vendors. When you’re done, kick back with a refreshing drink from the onsite bar, and listen to live music from local artists.

And hope lots of you will join us for what is always a fantastic day out. It’s really inspiring to see the camaraderie and efforts of the teams and we’re looking forward to cheering everyone on – including our very own team of nurses and hospice staff. “Currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three local people who need hospice support. But we have ambitions to make sure that in the future everyone who needs St Catherine’s care can have it. On your marks… Get set… Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races: Sunday 29th September

he final countdown has begun for the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. This year’s races will take place on Sunday 29th September. The Half Marathon will start at 10am and the 10km race will start at 10.20am. We are hoping that we will have close to 2,000 runners taking part on the day in the two races. If you want to take part there are still plenty of places available in both races. There are also cash prizes for the best fancy dress runners. This year will be the 37th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the 4th year of the 10km race. Last year over 2,000 runners registered to take part in the two races. The races are on closed roads and go through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex including the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. There will be a warm up for all the runners before the race which will be done by two of Bluecoat Sports fitness instructors. This will take place just before the races start so that everyone is nicely warmed up. Then there are highly visible race pacers taking part which enables runners to get help with running at their chosen pace and achieving the finish time that they aspire to. There will be six bands and groups playing music at different points on the race routes to help keep all

the runners motivated and at the end of the races all runners receive either a gold, silver or bronze medal. The whole event is organised entirely by volunteers and raises a lot of money for charity and also makes significant donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who help with the staging of the race. Last year we raised a lot of money for St Catherine’s Hospice and once again this year we are supporting this wonderful charity. Please do get out and support the runners on the race routes and come along to the Green to support the event. On the Green itself there will be plenty of additional activity. Platinum Ambulance Service will have a strong presence to help with any runners who suffered illness or injury, there are physiotherapists on hand to massage aching limbs. There will also be a number of different drinks and catering stalls as well as a funfair and plenty of music and entertainment for all the family. Are you tired all the time?

ow do you feel when you wake up? Are you bright eyed and bushy tailed, refreshed and ready for the day? Or do you feel drained, like you’ve hardly slept. GPs report that more patients are complaining of lack of energy. The syndrome even has its own name, TATT – which means Tired All The Time. If you constantly feel lethargic it is important not to ignore it. TATT is common but there are steps you can take to help yourself. There are many different causes of fatigue, and a good place to start is a chat with your GP. If you feel overwhelming exhaustion, which gets worse rather than better with activity, and does not improve with rest, you might be suffering from myalgic encephalopathy (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). There is not a definitive cure for these conditions but there are treatments and self-help measures that can help to ease the symptoms. A GP will test for other medical problems that can cause tiredness, such as anaemia, thyroid issues, food intolerances or diabetes. Many cases of TATT are related to mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. Traumatic life events, stress and money worries can also cause fatigue. Talking therapies can help in these cases, and your doctor may be

able to refer you to a counselling service. If a GP has ruled out more serious underlying causes but you still feel tired, there are lifestyle changes that will help. First make sure you’re getting enough good quality sleep. Make it a priority for a few weeks to see how much better you feel. The Royal College of Psychologists’ advice is to have both a regular bedtime and wake time, and avoid napping. If you struggle to drop off try a soak in a warm bath before you go to bed because this will make you feel calm, and the drop in body temperature when you exit the bath fools the body to start to prepare for sleep. Reduce your stress levels by scheduling relaxation time into your day. This could be something as simple as listening to your favourite music or meeting friends for a chat. A good diet also plays a role in increasing your energy levels. Try eating small snacks throughout the day, rather than one large meal in the evening. Avoid alcohol and drink more water. Cutting caffeine will also help but cut down gradually to minimise the risk of headaches. Finally, a little light exercise is another proven way to fight fatigue. Even a quick 15-minute walk around the block will give boost your energy. Tracey Anderson

R Rhodes & Son – 100 years of trading

Rhodes & Son shoe repairs celebrates its 100-year anniversary this year making it the oldest business in the village. It is well-known for its traditional repairs. Christian Henry Rhodes has taken the reins of the business taking it into its fourth generation. R Rhodes & Son was established in 1919 by Raymond Henry Rhodes in the village of Billingshurst. The business itself is older than the shop as Raymond began bootmaking and carrying out repairs in one of the cottages opposite the church. In the 1930s he was joined by his son Raymond Cecil Rhodes, where in 1934 the business moved to its current location on the high street where it still trades today. Raymond Cecil would cycle a specially adapted ‘trade’ delivery bicycle around the village and surrounding areas collecting boots for repairs and delivering them back as soon as possible. Geoffrey Rhodes took over the business from his father in 1982 and continued to run it until he sadly passed away at the start of 2019, passing the business to his son Christian Henry Rhodes.

Despite undergoing many changes over the years, including shop expansion, up-to-date machinery, and specially adapted sewing machines for the stitching and repair of a range of leather goods, the business still retains its values of providing quality repairs and expert advice. Christian said, “We still offer the same high-quality traditional shoe and leather repairs as well as shoe sales and key cutting for the local community and further afield and we hope we can for the next 100 year to come.” Today, the business offers a wide range of footwear including wellingtons, slippers, walking boots and summer sandals alongside a range of shoe care products. Summer working holidays boost Wey & Arun canal restoration

olunteers from across the UK and France have spent three weeks in July helping restore the Wey & Arun Canal as part of a Waterway Recovery Group summer Canal Camp initiative. Some 50 volunteers headed to Birtley, near Bramley in Surrey, to join the Wey & Arun Canal Trust in building a lift bridge, which is needed to bring the abandoned section of canal there back to life. The series of three week-long working holidays attracted volunteers of all ages and experiences, from Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award students, to those looking to increase their skills in construction, and returning Canal Camp enthusiasts from restoration groups KESCRG and Newbury Working Party Group. Many of those attending were first time volunteers, keen to give their time to canal restoration and learn new skills and meet new people. Oceane Pottier had not attended a Canal Camp before. “I am studying engineering in France and signed up to the camps to get some more experience in this. I’ve really enjoyed my time here,” she said. For Claire Sawyer it was her 19th camp. The perinatal mental health nurse said the camps provided the opportunity to meet different people and she had made lots of new friends as a result, as well as gaining new skills. She added, “It’s also great to look back at what you’ve achieved at the end of week.” Software engineer Stephen Davis, who led the third week of the camp, has been attending canal camps for 20 years as part of restoration group KESCRG. “Coming to these camps is so rewarding. With my computer work you don’t see visible results like you do here. I like to be out in the fresh air and get some exercise. We’ve got a great spread of ages and

backgrounds here, from chemists, retired lawyers to students.” Over the three week-long camps volunteers started with just a hole in the ground and have created the foundations on which the bridge will stand. To achieve this, they have used over 5.5 tons of reinforced steel, 7,000 ties and have poured more than 22 cubic metres of concrete. The bridge has been designed by Wey & Arun Canal Trust volunteer Rob Nicholson, who led the second week of the camp. The Newbury Working Party Group’s Bill Nicholson, who led the first week of the camp, said, “Building a new bridge is a major engineering project, and this would not be possible without the commitment of volunteers willing to give so much time to help plan and build the structure. In just three weeks we turned a hole in the ground into the base structure that will support the lift bridge; it’s fantastic to see such progress in a small amount of time.” Wey & Arun Canal Trust chairman Sally Schupke thanked the volunteers for their hard work and highlighted the difference the camps make to the canal’s restoration progress. “It’s clear the volunteers get so much out of these annual events, and we’re grateful to them for their dedication and commitment to helping us realise our vision of restoring the canal and bringing its benefits to so many people.” If you would like to join the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s volunteer teams, please go to https://weyarun.org.uk/volunteering or email support@weyandarun.co.uk. Heatwave business idea sparks blue light response

pair of entrepreneurial primary school pupils from Billingshurst turned the hottest day of the year so far to their advantage, raising more than £40 for The Fire Fighters Charity in the process. Five-year-old Jasmine and eight-year-old Oliver Harvey set up a stall outside the family home in the village on Thursday 25th July selling ice lollies as the summer heatwave took hold. Inspired by neighbour Andreas Hajiantoni, an on-call firefighter based at Billingshurst Fire Station, the siblings decided to donate their takings for the day to The Fire Fighters Charity. After learning about their venture, Billingshurst Crew Manager Mathew Gravell swung by the stall on Thursday morning to see how they were getting on, and invited them along with mum and dad, Sarah & Alex Harvey, for a tour of their local fire station to try their hand at being a firefighter. Sarah said the two children had been keen to kick off their summer holidays with something a little bit different. She said, “Jasmine came up with the idea of holding an ice lolly sale, and we planned it for the Thursday. It just so happened that it turned out to be the hottest day of the year. They couldn’t have planned it any better really! “It was lovely how the community really came out to support them – people we hadn’t even met before came along to support the stall after Mathew put a post out on the fire station’s Twitter account. It was so lovely to realise just what a supportive and friendly community we live in here.” On the evening of Tuesday 30th July Oliver and

Jasmine were treated to their own private tour of Billingshurst Fire Station by Mathew and firefighter Ronnie Hampton who showed them around the village’s fire engine, taught them how to use a hose pipe, and the importance of CPR. During the evening of getting to grips with life as a firefighter, the enterprising youngsters also presented the crew with their takings of £44.80 from the sale of their homemade ice lollies. Mathew said, “When we heard that Jasmine and Oliver were holding an ice lolly sale in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity I just knew we had to pop by and say hello and to thank them for all of their hard work. “But they had put so much thought into this that we really wanted to do something more for them, which is why we invited them along to the station too. It was an absolute pleasure to show them around the fire station, they definitely enjoyed working the sirens on the appliance. “We were also able to share some really important fire safety messages with them too, which they will be able to share with their friends.” Sarah said the children had been so excited for their visit. “They had been looking forward to it all through the weekend after Mathew came to see them,” she said. “And Oliver, especially, had a great time visiting the fire station. Since he was very young he has always been curious about ladders – if there’s one left out he always has to climb it. And if there’s a hose pipe in the garden he will make a beeline for it. A Good Read September’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Circe – Madeline Miller Stories about the Greek gods have existed for centuries, and in this novel from American author Madeline Miller we learn of the story of Circe, a character in Homer’s The Odyssey, but this time told from her point of view. Circe is the daughter of the sun god, Helios, but is considered neither beautiful nor powerful, unlike his other children. Shunned by those around her, including her once devoted younger brother Aeetes, Circe is sent alone to an island where she turns to a mortal, Glaucos, whom she falls in love with. Having discovered the power of witchcraft she brews a potion to turn Glaucos into a god so she can marry him. However, her plans go awry, and her revenge leads her to be hated and despised by both mortals and gods. Circe has been a fascination for authors since the time of Homer and has influenced such writers as James Joyce and Margaret Atwood. In this novel Miller breathes new life into her, along with other figures such as Medea, Achilles, and Zeus: a mixture of legendary Titans, Olympians, and mortals. Woven into the story are familiar legends such as the Minotaur in the labyrinth, and Icarus, who flew too close to the sun. With such a large cast of characters it would have been helpful if the publishers had provided a crib sheet so the reader might remember who is who, but this is a story well worth persevering with.

Instead of Billifest, the BCP are organising a Lantern Walk as part of Horsham District Year of Culture; the theme for December being Light Up your Town. The Walk will start at 4pm from the centre of Billingshurst in the Library car park and end at Station Road Gardens on Saturday 14th December. We have linked up with the Billingshurst Choral Society and the Christmas Cracker Carol Concert will be on the same day in the Leisure Centre (6.30pm). By linking the two events we hope that it will give the evening a strong community vibe. We hope to have as many local Billingshurst clubs, groups and organisations getting involved as possible. The plan is to have a series of workshops to make the lanterns with any groups that want to (probably midOctober, after the half-term break). We will have a small team of people that will work with groups to show them how to make the lanterns. The lanterns are made from

willow canes, tissue paper and PVA glue. All materials will be supplied by us. The finished lanterns will be then stored until 14th December. If you would like your club or group to be involved and could host a workshop session we would love to hear from you. It doesn’t matter if you don’t think you can join in the walk itself, we will, I’m sure need plenty of ‘spares’! Dumped garden waste on Council owned land A polite notice… Contractors employed by Billingshurst Parish Council look after and maintain an extensive number of open spaces and play areas around the parish. There have been occasions where our contractors have come across hedge cuttings and general garden refuse which has been dumped on Council land. Residents are reminded that hedge cutting is included within the Council’s very comprehensive garden contract and there are strict rules as to when hedge cutting can be carried out as the bird nesting season has to be taken into account. It is therefore unnecessary for residents to undertake hedge cuts on Council owned land, and then leave the cuttings for contractors to collect. ‘Brown top’ garden refuse bins can be sourced from Horsham District Council and there is the Household Waste Recycling Centre on the outskirts of Billingshurst village. If you find you have excess garden rubbish please use these facilities rather than dumping excess waste on Council land. Thank you.

Horsham District in One Hundred Objects Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, open now until 12th October

he Big H. 204 Square miles, at least 100 million years, and only 100 objects to explore and explain the rich and fascinating story of Horsham District’s Heritage. If Neil MacGregor can tell the world’s history in 100 objects, surely telling the District’s heritage with the same number of objects should be easy? But it isn’t, for many of the District’s stories have lain hidden in plain sight, known to a few. Now as part of the District’s Year of Culture, Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is unearthing the stories and revealing in the full glare of public gaze the District’s compelling heritage which covers from dinosaurs to ploughmen’s lunches, from Roman roads to postal services, from cricket to workhouses and much much more. The new temporary exhibition, Heritage of Horsham District in One Hundred Objects is at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery and is on now until 12th October. An accompanying book is due to be published and launched at the beginning of October. Working with the Horsham District Heritage Forum, the Museum asked the member organisations to nominate their ten most interesting or important cultural objects. The replies revealed a heritage that makes the District such a fascinating place in which to live. The selection could be seen as quirky, but every object represents a part of the District’s heritage. Who knew that Bramber has a Coaching wall that was built to stop coach travellers peering in to adjoining gardens? Or that Henfield has a musical instrument – a Change eight-bell set – a one off, that is recognised as nationally significant. Or that

Henfield has a Union flag that was used to drape over one of the four ‘unknown warrior’ coffins, ready for the selected one to be interred at Westminster Abbey. Or that stoolball was a local game that took off after World War One, only to decline in popularity in the 1930s, and then to be resurrected in the 1970s. The 100 objects are like points in a compass, directing the visitor across a broad heritage landscape. The exhibition, with its strong visual images and outline, is in effect a visitor centre to the District’s heritage, and the forthcoming book, on which it is based, will be the travel guide. The exhibition features over 30 of the 100 objects including cricket stumps that formed a shop sign, a great introduction to the sporting heritage of a game first recorded in the District nearly 300 years ago. Or the Horshamosaurus, a dinosaur named after the town, portrayed through a specially commissioned painting of the creature. Also on display will be a silver inkstand, a reward for breeding Merino sheep in the middle of the Napoleonic wars, when agricultural innovation was going hand in hand with the war against France and the District’s Commons were being enclosed. This is a must-see exhibition that will both surprise and inform, and also reveal just how special is the District’s heritage. Out and about / About the house Calling “79 – One More Time” to play Mary How Trust Bingo On Thursday 12th September, the last Mary How Trust bingo will take place at Storrington Village Hall. The monthly bingo evenings have been running for 12 years, and have raised £13,000 to give local men and women the chance to benefit from early detection of cancer and other serious illness. The Mary How Trust has taken the decision to call time on its bingo following the retirement of bingo caller Alan French, and the event’s lead volunteer Jacinta White. Roanne Moore, the charity’s fundraising manager, explains, “We’re very grateful to Alan and Jacinta for looking after the bingo evenings so brilliantly for several years – they’ve played a huge part in the evenings’ success, and they’re a hard act to follow! If we can find a bingo caller and someone to organise the monthly evenings, then we’d be delighted to re-launch our bingo.” For now, the event on 12th September is the last. ‘Below the Belt’ costume exhibition Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, open now until 14th September

‘B

elow the Belt’, often seen as a disparaging comment, not quite ‘British’, this new costume exhibition of that name is anything but disrespectful as it reveals in full glory what was worn from the waist down. Victorians may have invented skirts for piano legs so as not to offend, but this exhibition shows how the wellturned ankle was glorified and enhanced by the elegant shoe or stocking. Frankly, the knobbly knee was never, except in holiday camps, celebrated by fashion designers, but this revealing exhibition spans over 250 years of costume worn from the waist down; it doesn’t dwell on the dull, but the fascinating. One of the remarkable survivals of undergarments showcased in Below the Belt is the superbly stitched 1750s quilted petticoat. Worn during the age of Hogarth when the flaunting of female charm was socially acceptable, the petticoat reveals the care and attention to an undergarment that was fashionable to see. This in stark contrast to a pair of pink rayon knickers with a Utility mark from the 1940s. Also on display is a pair of Victorian crotchless

drawers, or pantaletters, made of white cotton with cut work embroidery. Pantaletters came in two forms; two completely separate tubes tied independently round the waist, or one garment with a very large split. Open crotches were thought to be far more practical than closed ones as women wore so many layers of undergarments that it could be very difficult to reach the bottom layer! In the 1850s, when drawers with closed crotches were first made available, they were considered to be impractical and unhealthy. This is an exhibition that reveals all, even if it would have shocked the Victorian gentleman. From 1920s postmen’s trousers, to a Japanese silk skirt from the 19th century to shoes for the delicate foot and not forgetting the silk and nylon stockings, the exhibition Below the Belt is a fascinating look at fashion from the waist down. What is an SQP?

n this article I thought I would describe my role within the pet care industry. Not many people have heard of an SQP let alone know what they do and as animal health professionals we are trying to change this. Firstly SQP stands for ‘suitably qualified person’. We are enrolled on a register held by the Animal Medicines Training and Regulatory Authority, known as AMTRA. A Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) is an animal medicines adviser, a legal category of professionally qualified persons who are entitled to prescribe and/or supply certain veterinary medicines under the Veterinary Medicines Regulations. As of July 2017 there are about 7000 SQPs. To qualify as an AMTRA SQP a person must undertake relevant training and pass examinations approved by AMTRA at Higher Education Level 4 or higher, and pass a viva (oral exam) conducted by an AMTRA Assessor. So, as you can see we are serious about what we do! There are different levels of SQP; some will be qualified across a wide range of species such as farm animals, others may specialise on companion animals or equines. If your local feed store has an SQP don’t be afraid to seek out their knowledge. If they think your animal needs to see a veterinary surgeon please take that advice – a good SQP will ask you lots of questions relating to your animal’s symptoms and previous health issues to help you find the best solution. The SQP can supply medicines that are more effective than typical off the shelf products and give you valuable advice on the correct use of them. They are unable to supply POM – V category medicines as these are only able to be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon. medicines available to SQPs fall within the follow distribution classifications: POM-VPS (Prescription Only Medicine-Veterinarian, Pharmacist, SQP), NFAVPS (Non-Food Animal-Veterinarian, Pharmacist, SQP) and AVM-GSL (Authorised Veterinary MedicineGeneral Sales List). POM-VPS medicines are used in farm animals and horses and are to help prevent disease. Products in this category help control and prevent external and internal parasites. ABC Animal Sanctuary Harvest Fayre West Chiltington, 22nd September, 11am-4.30pm

he ABC Animal Sanctuary in West Chiltington is holding a fun-packed Harvest Fayre this September. As well as being able to meet the resident animals and those looking for re-homing, visitors will experience a great range of entertainments. Actor and presenter Craig Henderson is the MC and was a friend of the founder Alexandra Bastedo. A selection of live music will entertain visitors throughout the day including Willie Austen, Bastedo Band, local singer Molly MacKenna and her ukulele, Paula Daly with her guitar (one of ABC volunteers) and piano duets from Students of Brenda Mendelssohn. Other attractions include a super dog show by experienced dog show event producer Mark Bridger-Pescott from Bone Canis with a selection of great classes from Best in Show to Junior Handler and Cutest Puppy. Children will be kept happy with a variety of entertainment including a treasure hunt, children’s races, lucky dip, face painting by Nicky, groom a pony and lookalikes Captain Marvel and Maverick from Top Gun will also be visiting. In addition David Stride the sanctuary’s farrier will be demonstrating how to shoe a horse. Two great opportunities to take home a lovely memento of the fair are a horseshoe painting stand and a photograph of the family in ABC’s new ‘Face in the Hole Board’ decorated with bright and colourful animals. All of the events will help raise money for the animals up-keep at the sanctuary. Visitors can chose from a wide selection of food stalls including ice cream, Thai, Vegan and Egyptian, plus Brian’s Mobile Bar will be selling

a wide variety of drinks. Tea and cakes will be on hand too so there will be something for everyone. How to give your child sports confidence

s parents, we often worry about our children when they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to be progressing quite as fast as their peers. Sometimes, when raising children in exactly the same way, it can seem baffling that one of our offspring seems naturally sporty and is riding a bike at three and a half, when the other canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to do it even aged seven. It is good to remember that development in sports is similar to how one might learn to read. Everyone learns at a slightly different pace and this is partly to do with each childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own physical development, and also where the child is on their sports learning curve. We support our children at Westbourne House by creating many different opportunities each week to practise and by modelling the skills ourselves in playtimes and lessons. And we keep it fun â&#x20AC;&#x201C; hugely important. Ultimately, it is about encouraging children to develop a lifelong love of being active. September is the traditional time for new beginnings and Slinfold School is now looking for a volunteer to join our Governing Body who will help with our drive to continue improving the school for our children. We meet six times a year, once every half-term for the serious business of Governance but also enjoy being involved in a more casual way such as helping at sports day, attending drama performances and of course handing out awards! Being a Governor is a rewarding way of getting involved in the local community and provides an opportunity to really make a difference to the lives of young people in our lovely village. The role is a strategic one and we plan ahead three to five years ensuring clarity of vision and ethos, rather than getting involved on a daily basis. We also ask questions of the Headteacher concerning the performance of the children and have oversight of the financial performance of the school. The Privet Hedge

ne of the questions I’m often asked as a gardener is “How do I trim my privet hedge?” Privet hedges aren’t a particularly sexy subject for a gardening article, but hedge-trimming seems to cause a lot of angst so let me tackle it here. Privet is one of our most popular hedging plants. It has dense foliage which is green all year round, and it’s hardy which means it’s suited to a wide range of planting sites. It’s also available in a selection of varieties and root types, so there’s a Privet hedge to suit most gardens. Autumn is a good time to trim them because there’s little chance of disturbing any birds who might be nesting in them. Nesting season generally runs from March to early August. If you have a small hedge like those outside terraced town houses, then hand-held hedge shears are fine, but for large hedges an electric or even a petrol hedge-trimmer is definitely easier. If you have one, give it a check over and make sure it’s sharp and well lubricated. Safety should be paramount. Wear safety goggles and sturdy gloves. It’s not overkill. I once spent Saturday afternoon in eye casualty because a small sharp twig flew into my eye while I was trimming a hedge. It hurt and took ages to heal properly so be warned. Before starting, remove any potential obstacles on the ground which might prove to be a trip hazard. Avoid using powered

tools above shoulder height; instead use a sturdy step ladder set on stable ground. If your hedge trimmer is electric use a residual current device (RCD) for safety purposes, and don’t use it in damp conditions. One little trick I learned at a hedge-cutting course a few years ago is to cut hedges so that they are slightly tapered on both sides. This will mean the base is wider than the top and light can reach the bottom of the hedge, which means the hedge will be greener and look healthier. Rachel Leverton

Top Tips To ensure an even, symmetrical hedge: Straight edges are difficult to cut by eye. Use a taut horizontal string tied between two stout canes to act as a guide so you can cut the top of the hedge level. For vertical lines use canes or stakes pushed into the ground. When using shears, ensure that the top of the hedge is cut level and flat by keeping the blades of the shears parallel to the line of the hedge. When using a hedge trimmer, keep the blade parallel to the hedge and use a wide, sweeping action working from the bottom of the hedge upwards, so that the cut foliage falls away

On Friday the 8th of February I was working on the corner of Daux Avenue and Marringdean Road when Storm Eric decided to blow a 70ft oak tree on top of me. I suffered fractures to my skull, shoulder, ribs, back and a bleed on my brain. Fast forward seven months and I have now made a full recovery. The most frustrating thing – apart from needing eight weeks off work, numerous consultant appointments and physiotherapy sessions – is having to rely on lifts from friends and family. Because of the bleed on my brain I have been unable to drive for six months. (Although when I have been out for dinner with my wife I have always been the one that could have a drink!) Thank you so much to all the strangers that helped me on the day of the accident and to all those who wished me well during my recovery. I am a very lucky man.

What to wear on the beach John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

hose of you good folks who kindly read my July offering may remember it was all about Men in Shorts. I feel it is only correct for me to do some form of follow up that involves you lovely ladies… Now, as I have only recently returned from holiday, and while the memories are still fresh in my mind, this missive is on that other summer covering, The Swim Suit. However, before I move onto the fairer sex, just a few words about us fellows here. Boys, teenagers, and handsome young bucks can get away with one particular strain of this apparel, the Budgie Smuggler. Sadly, however, and all too often, I encountered gentlemen who should never ever have draped such a garment around their loins. Why do they do it? What possible reaction do they really think they will attain? Giggles and laughter? If so, they succeed. We, with a far more realistic sense of decorum, don various trunks that reach just above or just below the knee cap. Usually the belt area is hidden under a generous amount of flesh that was once a tight sixpack but now has surrendered to gravity and heralds a waistband that is faithfully following the laws of universal expansion. But I digress. It was you ladies that are still foremost in my mind, although I can’t think why! There seems to me to be a complete change of attitude when the female of the species climbs into a swimming costume. She will be quite happy to practically kill herself and any nearby pedestrians as she fights to keep her dress down as she rides her bicycle down a lane on a windy day, only to appear from under her towel wearing three tiny handkerchiefs tied together with cotton thread once she’s on a sandy beach! A few ladies too, I’m sad to say, are also guilty of not checking the size labels on their swim suits and seem to have terrible trouble tucking various excess areas of their anatomy inside it. This can be viewed as either fantastic, fascinating, or frightening according to the personal taste of the males who are pretending to be dozing behind their sunglasses. On the whole, though, you girls are far more decorative than us blokes when it comes to beach gear. Whether bikini, tankini, or one-piece (see, I bet you’re impressed!) you have the edge as far as having something to admire when you compare the

two sexes in this form of apparel. Most days on our recent holiday we would walk along a beautiful sandy beach in the south of Portugal. Here was the perfect opportunity to study with great care the multitude of costumes that were sitting, walking, and often jogging along those golden grains. I think it’s important to add here that jogging in a costume should only be done by those who have a perfect body already in place. Any who try it in an attempt to attain such a form should be made aware of the various moving parts that they posses that are not exactly held firmly in place by such flimsy apparel and therefore are liable to be trying desperately to break free. Then again, it does give us lazy lookers-on a chance to realise that we are very wise to not indulge in such vigorous activity ourselves, and to accept our own bodies have long passed their sell-by date. This advice applies to both sexes by the way! I congratulate you girls on giving us mere males a real lift when we visit the seaside. No matter what you’re wearing, you will always look good to us menfolk. There was one thing, however, that did puzzle me. Several times as we strolled along we would be overtaken by a lovely female form striding out on her morning constitutional. Nothing wrong in that, you might say. True. But I do think she should have tucked into some breakfast before she started off as from the rear view a particular part of her anatomy seemed to be ravenously eating most of her pants as she strode along! To me that really looked extremely uncomfortable. Oh, the joys of bucket and spade time. Long may I have the strength to enjoy the experience. Most of all, thank you ladies for, as the song nearly goes, ‘You make us feel so good’. P.S. As a final thought on this subject I do recall my own apparel on a beach some 70 odd years ago. A Sunday School outing by double-decker bus to Littlehampton. Us boys were dressed in trunks that our mums and grans had knitted for us, thus saving valuable clothing coupons! We would stand by the water’s edge and shovel sand down inside them to see who could get the most in. Then, standing in the shallows, we allowed the waves to slowly trickle the grains into escaping via the ever expanding leg openings. Once the heavy weight of a sand-filled crutch had been stretched far enough to permanently stay at knee cap height it was time to go home. Funny what amuses us males, ain’t it! John Nash

A Choice?

Life is busy on that little farm near Billingshurst…

agnus could not make up his mind whether he liked being at home or being at the caravan best. Each had some very strong advantages… For instance at home: his bed. It had been James Edward’s old cat bed which was like a cave. It always felt safe from things falling on him. He really hated things being dropped on him from above – some humans are just so butter-fingered! For instance at home: freedom. As the farm was so big he could come and go as he liked. Nan opened the door and he could go out by himself. In the summer, like now, he could just slip in and out of the magnetic flyscreen door and not worry. If he wanted to go into the big house he could just about squeeze through the cat flap – if Gary isn’t around! For instance at home: paddocks. Nan took him down to the paddocks to check the sheep and he checked the rabbit holes. He had even chased the big fox once or twice but had also been zapped by the hens’ electric fence – he won’t make that mistake twice! The big paddock was a treat though Magnus didn’t like to go without Nan because the sheep beat him up. But on the other hand he didn’t go anywhere else or meet other people very often just on Fridays when he did his PAT visiting so life at home could be a bit predictable. At the caravan: He couldn’t go out by himself without Nan or Grandad, and only then with a lead on, because that was the rule. That was brought home to them all one day when something happened. Nan had just brought him back from his walk when they stopped to talk to the gardener. It just so happened that Magnus had spotted something on the way back that he wanted to check out. So after they went home he sneaked out from under the awning to find it. After a little while Nan looked for him and couldn’t find him. “Glynn,” she

shouted. “I can’t find my dog.” Glynn smiled and went around the toilet block scooped Magnus up and brought him back. Unfortunately the security men had noticed this happening and knocked on Nan’s caravan. “You know dogs are supposed to be on a lead at all times,” they scolded. Nan apologised and said she was sorry. But from then on she and Grandad watched Magnus much more carefully than before. But despite this Magnus did enjoy the caravan. When he went for a walk at least three times a day he went to the big dog walk paddock. It was a great walk because it had so many different smells, he was let off the lead and he could and often did his own thing. He met lots of other dogs and could practise his social skills. Usually the second walk was to another place: the beach (there were three), another nature walk, they could go to town and often he went to church or for a trike ride in the back of Nan’s tricycle which was great fun and saved wearing out his little legs. But the best thing of all about the caravan were his fan clubs. One evening they came back from the dog walk and a girl asked Nan, “Can I pat him?” Magnus stopped and was immediately surrounded by a group of girls all patting him and cooing over him. Magnus soaked up every moment of that. On that occasion, as the girls had bicycles they had just dropped in the middle of the roadway, two concerned dads came running up. “Oh, it’s just a dog,” one of them said. “I thought it was a pile-up.” Nan laughed and assured them the girls were all okay and having a lovely cuddle with Magnus. When the girls eventually cycled away Nan and Magnus walked back to the caravan for a drink. Fortunately Magnus didn’t have to decide which was better. Snowed Under – in August!

illingshurst Dramatic Society are so proud to be one of the award winning plays at the West Chiltington Drama Festival 2019. The Best Actress award was given to the brilliant Ted Gooda for her part of Sue in Anne-Marie Latter’s play, Snowed Under. Ted both lives and works in the village. On one of the hottest days of the year three brave performers from Billingshurst Dramatic Society put on their winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves and performed Snowed Under at West Chiltington as part the Year of Culture drama festival. The play is set in a library with the two librarians and an elderly annoying customer who are caught in a freak snowstorm. The play was directed by Caro Anderson. The day before, we perfomed it to some year 8 pupils actually in the library at the Weald School. Being a Drama Festival, this was a competition and the adjudicator began by praising the play’s set and costumes. We were complimented for our ability to bring out the humour, and Peter Burton was singled out by the adjudicator for his wonderful

acting skills. Julia Jepps is the third member of the cast having returned to acting after a long break. She jumped in at the deep end taking the major role of Breda, the ‘stick to the rules’ librarian. The audience starting laughing right from the first sentence and continued throughout until the mood of the play changes at the end. Each person played their character beautifully and this, combined with a slick backstage crew, made for a wonderful performance. We are going to perform this amusing and award winning play again in Billingshurst at the end of February so many more of you can come and see it. Watch this space! Our Community Volunteers – Carol Pearson

s a former Brownie and Guide herself, and with three children who have been variously involved in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, Wisborough Green’s Cub Scout Leader, Carol Pearson is no stranger to the Scouting movement. Originally a nurse, she first became involved as an Assistant Leader when her youngest child started at Cubs nine years ago, and she became the group’s leader four years later. She runs the group with two Assistant Leaders, Mark Braithwaite and Donna Fordham, good parental support and some help from Duke of Edinburgh Scheme students, and the group has been encouraged by the recent appointment of a new Group Scout Leader in the shape of Simon Fordham. Carol is an enthusiastic advocate of the benefits – for both the children and their leaders – of getting involved. She tells me that she loves the activities, from the creative (craft and outdoor cooking) to the skills-based (mapreading and knot-tying), and from the educational (science experiments and talks from, for example, the Air Ambulance) to the adventurous (camping and firemaking skills). Some of these are things that she herself learned as a Guide, others that she has been taught as part of her scout leader training, which also prepares leaders with safety and first-aid skills. She

also emphasises the positive ‘family’ feel that the group has, both in learning about service through involvement with local events such as serving refreshments at the village fete and taking part in Remembrance Day and St George’s Day celebrations, but also with the good relationships built in the group across school years. She also loves seeing the changes in the children, some of whom come to the group a little shyly at first but grow in confidence and ability over the two and a half years with all they experience and learn there. With her recently-acquired camping licence she has plans to take the group on more expeditions, starting with a District Camp in September, and is looking forward to learning more skills and passing them on to the next generation.
