hortly after the August issue went to press Boris declared that ‘Freedom Day’ would go ahead and with it all remaining restrictions would cease including social distancing and mask wearing. Thankfully the public knew better and masks continue to be worn, at least in crowded places. Nevertheless, the new found normality has resulted in the return of many events that had been non-existent or virtual last year. Run Barns Green is perhaps the best example of this. Why not pop along to Barns Green on 26th September and cheer the runners on? Read all about this long-standing event on page 16. Billingshurst Macmillan: 25 years fundraising

he Billingshurst Macmillan Group are celebrating fundraising for 25 years this year and to celebrate they held two Coffee Mornings, one in Pulborough in June and one in Billingshurst in July, both events were well attended and an incredible £1753 was raised. At each, Terri Ashpool thanked everyone for attending and their wonderful support. At the Billingshurst Coffee Morning Pam Goldsmith was presented with her long service award for fundraising for the group for 25 years, receiving a certificate, flowers, wine and an engraved wine glass. The presentation was made by Joanna Stuttaford, Macmillan Service Lead, from Midhurst. Joanna thanked Pam and the group for all their support and hard work over the years, especially in the pandemic year and a half and stressed how important the group were in keeping funds coming in! Also in attendance was the local MP, Mr Jeremy Quinn who said, “I am privileged to see first hand the invaluable work Macmillan does for many of my constituents – we are all grateful for a fantastic organisation and those whose fundraising makes it all possible.” The Group started 25 years ago with Jenny Kern and Mr & Mrs T Giles who wanted to fundraise for a local charity; they baked and sold at local events. The group’s first film night was Chicken Run in December 2000 – it was not certain how well these film nights would go, but they have increased in popularity over the years and proved to be very profitable. Over the years there have been many wonderful fundraising events, such as Steam Rallies and Harvest Night Auctions – one night in particular was very funny as a husband and wife were, unknowing to themselves, were at either ends of the room bidding for same item!

These auctions often raised around £1000. West Chiltington Flower Show was always great fun with music and lots of stalls. The group would run the catering wagon and there were fireworks to end the event and over the two days this would raise £3000. Tree of Hope has been running for many years. People can buy a light for the tree in memory of a loved lost one. The short service at St Marys Church, Easebourne, is followed by the lighting of the tree (June Whitfield has turned on the lights in previous years) with mince pies and mulled wine. This much loved event raises around £5000 each year. Annual barbecues were held at Jenny’s house often raising £1000. Stardust in the Garden was another wonderful event held in a supporter’s garden. Local artist/ singer/performer Stephen Foster has held and performed many a music night for us. The group were recognised for their fundraising in January 2018 when Terri and Pam where invited to attend Buckingham Palace where they were thanked in person by HRH Prince of Wales. Other ways the group fundraise are through stalls are local fayres/fetes, catering for wakes, birthdays, etc, markets, barn dances, bingo nights, coffee mornings, donations and in memoriam and much more. The group has gone from strength to strength with many members, all connected through their own experiences with cancer and Macmillan. All members are voluntary and all work tirelessly to raise much needed funds for Macmillan; the group are particularly proud to say that all funds raised go to local cancer care at Midhurst. Since starting in 1996 the group has raised a staggering £1,437,935. Fun in the Sun – July’s Picnic in the Park raises £400 Station Road Community Gardens, Sunday 18th July

n Sunday 18th July, Picnic in the Park was held at Station Road Community gardens, on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far. For those who braved the blazing sun (and made good use of every bit of available shade!) the event featured two sets from local band ‘Corvette’, along with music provided by Noah. Alongside the usual plant stall and cake stand, the event was supported by the Innovation Eco Station from Sussex Green Living along with Billingshurst Community Partnership and Billingshurst Rotary, who provided a find-the-gnome challenge and a popular

scarecrow building competition. The event raised £400 to support the ongoing maintenance costs of the gardens. A special thank you goes to Billingshurst Arun Scouts, who provided not only the marquee, generator and tables, but also three fantastic volunteers in Jas, Lucybelle and Martha who helped with the running of the event from start to finish so a big thank you to them, and indeed all the volunteers who contributed towards the event. Community Gardening Day Station Road Community Gardens, Saturday 18th September from 9.30am

ollowing the success of our previous two Community Gardening days, our next event is our Autumn Gardening Day on Saturday 18th September. We hold three of these each year, and they are an opportunity for members of the community to come together and give a few hours to help to keep this fabulous community resource well maintained.

Pulborough Village Market is well established and held in Pulborough village hall on a monthly basis. Monthly announcements are seen within West Sussex publications (see What’s On pages. Ed.) as well as locally placed posters giving details of the fresh produce available including flowers, vegetables, eggs, homemade cakes, fresh quiche plus craft stalls including individual designed cards, soft toys and baby wear, hand-crafted gifts and beautiful stitched bags and cushions. The craft stalls can vary from month to month so there are always new and interesting items to view. If you are looking for something special for yourself or others, please come and take a look. However, there is another element of the market which is extremely popular. Banana Upside Down Cake For lovers of caramel everywhere METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. 2. Line a 20 x 20cm square baking tin or a 23cm round tin with baking parchment. It’s best not to use a loose-bottomed tin but if you do fold the parchment so it goes up the sides of the tin too. Otherwise, the caramel will leak out into the oven! 3. To make the topping, place the sugar, butter, and golden syrup into a small heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat until all the sugar and butter have melted. Stir gently and pour into the tin, tilting the tin backwards and forwards so the layer of caramel completely covers the bottom. 4. Slice the bananas into pieces about 2cm thick. Place them in the caramel. 5. For the cake, mash the bananas with a fork then mix into the yogurt. Set aside. 6. Place the butter and sugar into a large mixing bowl. Whisk till pale and fluffy. 7. Add the vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time, whisking after each one. 8. Sift the flour and spices together and gradually fold into the mixing bowl. Then fold in the banana and yoghurt mixture. 9. Spoon the batter into the cake tin on top of the caramel and bananas. 10. Bake at 180°C for about 45 minutes. Test with a skewer to see if it's cooked. If necessary bake for a little longer. 11. When ready, remove the cake from the oven and let it stand for a couple of minutes. Then place a plate on top of the tin and turn it over to remove the cake. 12. Serve warm with cream, custard, or ice cream.

his summer our screens have filled with proud sportspeople holding high their Olympic medals – well-deserved rewards for years of relentless training. Behind the triumph of this moment will be the tireless support of families, friends and coaches backing up individuals’ talent with the greatest of support. Most of us will never hold an Olympic medal high. There may well lurk in our drawers a 5K race medal or a swimming badge from our youth. However, in our personal experience there will have been moments when we feel like we do indeed deserve a medal. Others may never know what life medals we deserve. Those achievements commonly remain unrecognised. For some it might be getting through another day caring for a dependent loved one, costing us all the energy we have. For others, maybe persevering with studying or moving house. How about those private successes of maintaining family relationships despite great difficulties? Living daily with ill health, doing our best to make the most of life. What medal would honour your personal efforts at this moment? An athlete has a coach to help them achieve

their goals. We too may look around for support and advice. Some of us have the gift of friends and family for wise counsel. The internet overflows with ideas and coaching that in itself takes a medal once you’ve worked out what to believe! Where can we turn for the companionship and encouragement akin to an athlete’s ever-present coach beside them? Well, the Bible describes God as beside us constantly, understanding and knowing what our life involves. Deep within our heart we may know God’s eternal love and presence through the gift of God’s Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has been described by some like a coach. How wonderful to have a coach that encourages you, calls you on and fills you with courage to keep going. A coach that inspires and empowers you as you live out your life. All we need to do is ask. “…the One who is coming to stand by you, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will be your teacher” (John 14:25-26 J.B. Phillips New Testament).

“So you think you’re pretty fit, Rev Greg…” Rev Greg Cushing and Richard Allan cycled from Lands Ends to John O’ Groats in 7 days to raise money for Alfold & Loxwood Parish Church

year ago, when confronted with COVIDinduced financial worries, plus the financial hits of taking on a new curate and a potential building reordering – I challenged the church family of Alfold & Loxwood Parish to think inventively about raising money for church. I didn’t realise at that stage that the challenge would be thrown back in my face, “You think you’re pretty fit, Rev Greg,” taunted Richard Allan (a GB age grouped triathlete might I add!), “…why don’t we do a Lands End to John O’ Groats cycle – if a few donated £1 a mile that’s £1000!” “Great idea,” I replied, thinking most certainly that this challenge was just conjecture and male bravado. But then it happened – somehow we completed it in 7 days from 12th-18th July 2021. We’d set up a JustGiving page (which is still up and running by the way, see end of article), and alongside external donations we’re very near our goalposts of 10k. We’re incredibly grateful to over 90 donors, many of whom are not churchgoers, and especially thankful for slightly irreverent prayers to cope with sore bottoms. Jokes aside, I love that line “God gives the dignity of causality to our prayers,” and there were some incredible-providential-prayer-answered moments on our trip. Like the time my tyre blew with a shotgun-like sound in a small village in the middle of nowhere, and then lo and behold at just the right time a bloke pops up saying, “Hi chaps, are you OK? I run a bike shop 10 miles away and have my van just here…” – what were the chances! Or there was the time on the A9 just north of Inverness when a black Transit van tried to overtake an articulated lorry right in front of us and lost control. Its

back end swerved out and in that moment I wouldn’t have been surprised if behind the scenes an angel had held up the van to stop it from rolling into us. Suffice to say we’re thankful for an answered prayer. God is good. And finally, a huge, huge, thanks must be expressed to Ruth Allan our support vehicle driver who was integral to our completion. She never faltered and popped up with refreshments in places we hadn’t even planned on meeting her, just when we were wilting, like manna from heaven. We were probably burning 7/8000 calories a day, sitting for 10-12hrs a day on a bike, like cars guzzling fuel, eating whatever was on offer: doughnuts, Cornish pasties, Scottish meat pies, basically anything! They say despite being ‘uphill’, do Lands End to John O’ Groats rather than the other way around because you’ll get the prevailing winds assisting you. Sadly, this isn’t always true and we became firm friends with a constant headwind – God was certainly shaping our characters! 2. If you’re thinking of doing this, bear in mind when farmers do their muck spreading – from Lands End to John O’ Groats farmers seemed to be spreading in unison, which led to some fairly interesting smells! Billingshurst Tennis Club celebrates the formal opening of its Street Art practice wall

he new street art mural on the Billingshurst Tennis Club practice wall was formally opened on Thursday 29th July by the talented young winning local designer Finley, and representatives from the two lead sponsors –Billlingshurst Lion’s Club and Henry Adams. Chair of Billingshurst Lion’s Club Community Services, Joan Bobker, said, “When we were approached it was clear this was just the kind of local project the Lions Club are keen to support and when put to the committee it was approved unanimously and I am delighted to see the end result.” Gareth Overton, Head of Residential Sales at Henry Adams added, “Supporting our local communities is always important to us at Henry Adams and this project is exceptionally inspiring – Billingshurst Tennis Club has brought together young designers and a unique charity to create a dynamic and fun artwork.” The street art painting was done by Sarah Gillings and her team from south-east based charity U CAN SPRAY who specialize in Street Art. The charity inspires and engages young people from all backgrounds through artistic spray painting. They particularly focus on marginalised and disadvantaged children who are often not in education and who have challenging

situations to deal with. Richard Cordy, Chair of Billingshurst Tennis Club, said, “We are very appreciative that this was all made possible by the generous contributions from both our club members and the following local organisations within the village: Goring Rd Carpets, Fowlers, The Kings Head, Meadows Wellbeing, Yomdel, Little Bean Café, and our two lead sponsors who we were fortunate enough to have substantially underpinning our fundraising efforts – Billingshurst Lions Club and Henry Adams Estate Agents.“ Billingshurst Tennis Club is Tennis Sussex Club of the Year and now has over 260 members. There are four floodlit courts where members of all ages play social and competitive matches with new joiners always welcome. ocal families affected by dementia are being invited to take part in an award-winning programme, to help train the healthcare professionals of tomorrow and improve dementia care. Anyone with a diagnosis of dementia, regardless of type or stage, can take part in Time for Dementia with their carer or family member or friend. Time for Dementia provides an opportunity for students to learn the different perspectives of both living with dementia and caring for someone with the condition. Our research shows that taking part in Time for Dementia improves students’ knowledge and attitudes towards dementia as well as an improvement of person-centred care to patients affected dementia. The Time for Dementia project, supported by the Alzheimer’s Society, pairs families affected by dementia with undergraduate students, helping to better educate them about life with dementia and the challenges that come with it. From September, Brighton and Sussex Medical School medical students will be taking part and the Alzheimer’s Society are now seeking families in the area who want to make a difference to training health

Billingshurst Wednesday Group remain active despite lockdown During the pandemic the Wednesday Group have continued to ‘shine’ to people in our community and have kept in touch with about 80 people, meeting up in small groups, when allowed, for coffee mornings, etc and to share friendship in difficult times. Recently we have taken on our own ‘Captain Tom Challenge’ to drink 100 coffees in 100 days to raise £100. We achieved this – actually about £200 – and this will be distributed to local charities including Chestnut Tree House, the Air Ambulance and to our local Macmillan Group. This group of older folk has shown that despite living in difficult times we can help others in their difficult times – not bad for a bunch of oldies (nearly all 70+!). Hazel Barnes

Time to Choose? Where should you go to university?

f you’re a student now entering Year 13 you may be trying to narrow down your choice of university for September 2022. It can be quite a task because there are so many. Even if you know what you want to study – chemical engineering, maths, architecture, medicine, music, etc, different universities can have radically different approaches. Here are some points to consider… Course and Contact Hours. How much tutor contact do you want or need? Do you want a more conventionally academic course, or would you prefer something more practical and hands on? Scholarships. These can be awarded for a variety of reasons; academic excellence, music, and sports are most common. The good news is that you don’t have to be studying music or sports as a subject, just willing to perform on behalf of the university. Bursaries. If you grew up in the care system or come from a background where parental finances are strained, universities may offer a financial incentive for you to attend. Modules. You can usually check course modules online. Do they look interesting? You don’t want to end up studying something you hate for a year. Placements. Are there any placements associated with your course? Are they compulsory? Whereabouts in the course do they fall? Are they paid? Student Halls of Residence. Are there halls and are they near the university? Not having to negotiate transport and bus timetables can be a bonus when there are so many other new skills to learn. Student flats can be great, but in the first year when you don’t know anyone it can be daunting organising billsharing and rent payments on top of everything else.

Consider location; rents in London and the South can be considerably higher than other parts of the UK. Societies. What are you into? Some uni’s are famous for their theatrical societies, others for their sports facilities, sailing clubs, choral societies, or orchestras. If you have a hobby you are passionate about there will be a university society for you. Nightlife. If you’re the nightclub type you might want to make sure you’re going somewhere with a good night scene. People assume all universities have this, but some are situated on isolated campuses, and you might need to take this into consideration. Local area. If you like to get out hill walking at the weekends then London might not be the best choice. However, if you love art galleries and theatre it might be the perfect place. If you love to sail or sea kayak, then you might like to consider universities near the coast. Do you want easy access to a gym? A swimming pool? Dance studio? Is your chosen uni where you think it is? Think I’m joking? I grew up in Warwick and every year without fail we had lots of people wandering around the castle area asking where Warwick University was. They were always surprised when we said, “Coventry!” How far away from home is it and are there are good transport links? If you want to pop home now and then, you might not relish a nine-hour coach ride. Open days. Going to open days is a great idea. You will get a first-hand feel of where you could be staying and an opportunity to talk to students already there. Post-Freedom Day, open days should be happening again, so go to a few, and trust your gut instinct. Jayne Grant

Lights on in West Sussex

In support of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the Parish Council is hoping to plant more trees in the parish. Last autumn, 27 trees were planted around the parish, funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) held by the Council, and proved very popular leading to requests from residents for even more trees. The Council is now asking residents to suggest further locations for trees and also inviting donations which the Council will match on a £ for £ basis from its CIL fund. It costs £200 to supply and plant each sturdy standard-sized specimen. Suggestions for sites must be for land deemed highway, which in the main are grass verges. (If in doubt, send in your suggestions anyway.) Please send a simple sketch map to the Parish Office, by post or e-mail. Each site will be assessed for suitability in terms of sightlines, underground utilities etc. Donations can be way of cheques payable to Billingshurst Parish Council or via BACS: Billingshurst Parish Council / Sort code 60-02-31 / AC No. 95980784. Please put TREE DONATION as the reference. Trees will be planted in the autumn of 2022.

At the time of writing it is hard to believe that autumn is on its way and nights will soon be drawing in! Billingshurst Community Speedwatch Speedwatch sessions are up and running again. If you are concerned about speeding vehicles in the parish, and you would like to be able to try and do something about it, why not consider joining the Community Speedwatch Scheme? The more volunteers that come forward, the more frequently the Speedwatch sessions can be held and the more areas can be covered. You don’t have to commit to taking part in every session, even just every now and then will help. HM Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Next year the May Bank Holiday Weekend will be moved to Thursday 2nd June and an additional Bank Holiday on Friday 3rd June will see a four-day weekend to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Mindful that the parish will wish to celebrate this unique historic milestone, the Parish Council has arranged to host a community meeting on Tuesday 14th September at 7.30pm. It is hoped that by many organisations and individuals all working together, a programme can be delivered which includes something for everyone and will be something of which the parish can be justifiably proud. Traffic Calming Measures – An update Residents continue to ask what is happening about slowing traffic down in East St and High St. Consultants appointed by the Parish Council (through funding from WSCC) have recently started gathering data etc to inform a program of works in East St and High St to: 1. Encourage more use of the new spine road; 2. Encourage cycling and walking into the Village Centre; 3. Make the Village Centre more attractive to shoppers etc. 4. Reduce rat-running; 5. Reduce speeds through East St and High St. We hope to see a design proposal by end of year which will then go to public consultation. Following any amendments, we hope WSCC will fund the works using developer contributions for transport improvements its holds for the parish.

Parcels of Highway land for sale The Parish Council is aware of a number of parcels of land which have recently been advertised for sale online, but which also lie within the highway maintained by West Sussex County Council at the public expense. West Sussex County Council (WSCC) is responsible for this land in its capacity as the Local Highway Authority and therefore the land is, as such, protected by statute from encroachment or obstruction. The County Council, as the Highway Authority, has a duty to assert and protect

the rights of the public to the use and enjoyment of the highway under Section 130 of the Highways Act 1980. If land falls within the highway maintainable at the public expense, although the underlying freehold of the land can be sold, any purchaser of land such as this will need to be aware that, should they wish to carry out any development on the land, including fencing or obstructing the land in any way or the removal of anything currently on it, they will need to contact and obtain permission from the highway authority before undertaking such works. Understandably, the County Council cannot keep abreast of every online sale but as soon as they are made aware, usually by local residents, the Council’s Legal Services Team proceed to contact the Auctioneers to advise on the highway status of the land. If residents would like to discuss the situation further or report further potential sales, the Land and Property Information Team can be contacted either by email landandpropertyinfo@westsussex.gov.uk or by telephone (01243) 777100.

“I don’t do it for money or accolades, I do it because I love the charity”

am Williamson is Manager of the Reigate St Catherine’s Hospice charity shop. Here she shares some of her experiences and how community donations make such a difference to the local hospice. “I joined St Catherine’s three years ago and transferred to the hospice’s Reigate store last year. Volunteers are so important to St Catherine’s “Throughout lockdown, I messaged or called 47 volunteers across St Catherine’s Reigate and Dorking shops to check that they were all doing OK. It was a lovely way to get to know volunteers that I hadn’t met from the Reigate store before I started there. When the shop officially reopened last July, I felt as though I’d known them all for years! Volunteers are the heart and soul of the hospice’s shops “We couldn’t do what we do at St Catherine’s without them – we’re like a family. For National Volunteer’s Week I made them a card to say thank you, and for new Reigate shop volunteers I make a ‘St Catherine’s Hospice Survival Kit. Every day at work is different “Donations are always coming in, customers are constantly asking questions and other hospice departments are often getting in touch, but this is the first job where I don’t wake up and dread going into work; I’m incredibly passionate about what I do. I don’t work here for the money or the accolades, I do it because I love St Catherine’s. “My nan died six months before I started working

for the hospice. She received community care from St Catherine’s so I like to think that this job was her looking out for me. “Many supporters also have personal experience of hospice care. “There’s a gentleman that regularly donates to the Reigate shop as we cared for his wife. We calculated that his donations alone have raised approximately £10,000 – a large part came from a Cartier watch that he donated, that was sold online for over £3,700! “Gift Aid also makes a big contribution to the total amount raised in hospice shops as it allows our charity to make an extra 25% on an item. I always encourage donors to sign up to Gift Aid if they haven’t already as it’s such a quick and easy way to help raise more money. “If there was one thing I wish I could tell people it’s ‘Don’t be afraid of charity shops’. There’s such a stigma around the idea that it’s OK to donate, but not to buy. Cycle ride challenge raises over £1,400 for local hospice

odie Fry and her best friend Becky cycled 50 miles on Sunday 1st August to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice who have been supporting Jodie’s Mum Lisa. Cheered on by Lisa, family and friends, the pair saddled up on static bikes at the Hornbrook Inn pub in Horsham. They raised over £1,400 for their local hospice. Jodie said, “In 2019, Mum’s smear test came back all clear. When she began feeling unwell earlier this year, she was originally diagnosed with kidney stones. When we found out she had cervical cancer it was a big shock for us all. We’ve never had cancer in our family so it just goes to show it can happen to anyone. “At first, Mum was told her cancer was stage one but within weeks we discovered her cancer was aggressively growing and spreading, decreasing her chance of survival. It was so quick and unexpected as Mum has always been the fittest, healthiest person I know. “Mum’s cancer has been a lot for her to process. She’s had to deal with emotional and physical pain and face her inner demons. Throughout everything, St Catherine’s have supported her and their nurses helped sort out her medication. “She’s been so strong throughout her illness. Mum was never the type of person to sit in bed feeling sorry for herself. She was always up and about and going to the gym, so to then sit in hospital for two months was a very different change for her. I’m so proud of her. Mum had six weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in lockdown, and amazingly her latest test results showed there’s no tumour anymore. Mum was facing the end of her life but now she’s come out the other side. She’s starting to get her independence

back and can walk and drive again. “Seeing Mum go through her treatment and knowing we couldn’t physically help her was hard. To show our support, my best friend Becky and I decided to cycle 50 miles on static bikes to raise money for St Catherine’s. Mum has always told us how helpful and responsive the hospice has been, and we want others to have their help in the future. “It was so special to have Mum at the pub watching us cycling. It’s been an honour to take on this bike ride for her – she’s the strongest, bravest woman we know.” Arron Trott, Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said, “We’re so grateful to Jodie and Becky for doing this for Lisa but also for other people who need the help of our hospice. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, we’re still not able to run our usual fundraising events, and we’ve had a drop of around £1.5 million in income. The fundraising efforts of people like Jodie and Becky will make sure we can be here for other families in years to come. Countdown to Charity Car Wash!

ot long to go before we invite and welcome you to attend our first charity car wash in over 18 months. On Saturday 11th September from 10am-2pm we will be ready with our buckets and sponges! All we ask for is a small donation towards our chosen charity, The Firefighters Charity, which looks after us and our families in lots of different areas. There will be hot drinks, cakes and snacks available. Due to COVID, we totally respect and understand if you would prefer to stay in your vehicle while we get to work. For those wanting some fresh air we will have sanitizing areas available. We ask everyone for a bit of common sense on the day and leading up to it; if you ave any signs or symptoms beforehand please do not attend. Earlier last month, we recruited a new member to the station. Although he’s been in the Fire Service since 2018, Joe Bagwell recently

moved from Partridge Green to Billingshurst, and is now on call for the Billingshurst community. He has settled in well, and is a valued team member in our already great team. We also have a potential new recruit joining us this month too if training courses continue and he is successful. Watch this space for an introduction. We will be hopefully continue with school visits and welcoming back small groups to the station once the summer holidays end and the government’s rules allow us to do this. It feels like we are starting to get back to normality which is really exciting as it’s been a difficult 18 months for everyone. We hope to see as many of you as possible at our charity car wash. illingshurst & District Lions are looking to encourage people of all ages, men and women, to bring their skills, knowledge and ideas to an active Club – still young at heart after 46 years – in providing help and assistance wherever necessary in the local community. Billingshurst Lions pride themselves in being a friendly welcoming club, best known locally for its Charity Bookshop in Jengers Mead, raising substantial amounts in the past 18 years, together with a Charity Golf Day, Christmas Carolling with Santa’s Flying Bedstead touring Billingshurst and surrounding villages, plus events at schools and village fetes. What could I expect if I get involved? The Club’s primary objective is Fund Raising, for Community Service to offer financial support to any local person or organisation with a specific need, and for Projects to provide financial and practical help to Primary Schools, Pre-Schools, Residential Homes and community schemes. How could I be involved? There is ample scope to choose and to further the activity you would enjoy in bringing your skills, experience and new ideas to the Club, but most importantly, doing what you would like to do. What could I get out of it? This could be many things:-

• Satisfaction from using your skills and experience to benefit the community. • The opportunity to bring new ideas and gain new experiences. • Pleasure in seeing the result of your efforts, particularly on people’s faces. • The chance, if you are new to the area, or recently retired, to meet new friends. What about the social aspect? It’s not all work and no play; the Club normally has a full and varied social calendar. President Richard Melchio says, “Since joining the Lions, I have met, without exception, a bunch of very likeable, well meaning, and fun people, who are only too eager to go out of their way to help, particularly the young and vulnerable. A Good Read September’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Love, Sex, Death & Words – John Sutherland and Stephen Fender Sometimes it can feel like the shelves of the local bookshop are planning your life out for you, with their collections of 1001 Places to Go/Films to See/Things to do Before You Die/Turn 40/Lose the Will to Live… Such collections vary in quality too – some are weighty coffee table tomes, beautifully illustrated, which reward random opening and selection, whereas others have a distinct sense of being ‘thrown together’ for a key shopping moment in the crowded calendar. Well, if you have a book buff among your acquaintances, here is a collection with a difference. Sutherland and Fender have used the days of the year as their format, and each day contains a mini essay concerning a literary event from history. Some are uproariously funny anecdotes, some are well-known tales of foolishness or excessiveness which stand up well to a second/third/tenth telling, and some are serious musings on life and literature – in other words Love, Sex, Death & Words. So, in a typical month, you might go from Peter Pan to TS Eliot, or from Francis Bacon to Harry Potter. The day-by-day format suggests that the authors intended this to be a book ‘dipped in to’ on any given day. However, the quality and variety is such that it can be read all at once should you so wish – I did and passed an

enormously entertaining train journey rattling straight through from January to June. Not just for avid readers, but for anyone interested in life and literature, this is an excellent bedside or holiday companion – funny, entertaining, and educational. Be warned though – one thing leads to another, and you will soon find yourself putting many of the authors who feature here on your wish list. The Queen’s Knickers – Nicholas Allan Ever wondered why the Queen’s Christmas Speech is so short? It’s the holly on her knickers. The Renegades deer to be different!

he Renegades Youth Club found themselves in deer straits when they had their first ever attempt at skinning a roe. “The children were initially very reticent about touching the creature, which had been donated by a local farmer, and stood right back. It took about a minute for their natural curiosity to kick in, and then they all had a go and had great fun in the process,” says Group Leader Gareth Miller. “They were really good at it and there were only two or three nicks into the flesh by the end. They were so proud of mastering such a traditional country skill, and then they all took some venison home to show their parents. We are always looking for new and different things for the kids to experience but even I never expected this one!” Now that all the schools are on their long summer break, the Renegades (unlike most youth organisations) is continuing to operate throughout the holidays. Each week the youth club hires a local minibus – though we would love one of our own – and takes the members on a day trip. Most recently, a large group had a whale of a time in the sand dunes at the beach at West Wittering.

“They were in their element,” says Gareth. “They went swimming and snorkelling, had packed lunches and then, for some reason, made an enormous sofa and chair out of the sand… which they all then sat on. The camaraderie was just fantastic – whatever their ages – as they all worked together. It was just lovely to see.” Unfortunately, the planned camping trip was wiped out by the weather and will hopefully be reinstated by the end of the summer but getting back to nature is still proving very popular thanks to Bushcraft Officer Becci Coombes. “This week we made campfire bread. The kids made the dough, then whittled willow sticks and wound the bread round the sticks to make spirals which they then cooked on the campfire. Some of the children added cheese, some marshmallows and hilariously some added both!” laughed Becci. The Renegades is a Registered Charity. Membership costs £10 a month. ‘Superheroes’ are visiting for Slinfold School’s Summer Fair 2021

linfold CE Primary and Pre-School are delighted to invite you to their celebrated Summer Fair, which will be held on Sunday 26th September from 12-3pm. This year we have food from Streetfood and More and bar refreshments; we will also be enjoying the heroic theme with magic and many other of our usual attractions such as a live band. We also welcome some physical challenges from our afterschool clubs. We have invited many retail stalls to join us this year to add to the attraction. We are running a raffle and auction, with great prizes generously donated by local companies, as well as other chances to win a prize! Pick up a programme from a local business for more information! Slinfold’s Summer Fair has always been a fantastic day out for the whole family – with high attendance and record-breaking fundraising. We raised over £7000 in 2019, which is amazing for such a small village and school. In 2020, we continued

the fun with a VIRTUAL fair and still managed to raise in excess of £3000. The money raised by the PTA over the year pays for the whole school to attend ‘Forest Schools’ and also funds extra-curricular activities and learning – last year we contributed to outdoor learning spaces and lockdown goodies for our children. With your support this year, we hope to be able to continue supporting our school and their teaching. Our PTA work hard all year round to raise funds – we run several events including a weekly cake raffle (yes, even through lockdown!) – but we would not be able to achieve any of this success without the tremendous support from the headteacher, the school staff, parents and extended family who attend our events. The Spaniel Diaries

ell, my threats to bite the weatherman haven’t seemed to have worked; it’s been more like November than August lately. We have been getting absolutely soaked on our walks and mum has taken to putting us in silly drying coats afterwards; I would prefer to roll around in the horses’ stables in their nice wood shavings, but mum put the kibosh on that after I shook half the contents of one of the stables all over the inside of the car. Personally I couldn’t see the problem as it made the car smell better anyway! Mav isn’t very impressed as he went to the groomer this week, I thought it was hilarious as he really hates being groomed and he always comes home smelling like flowers! I really must search him out some fox poo to roll in as I do feel a tiny bit sorry for him having to smell so flowery. One thing that is driving mum mad at the moment is the burrs. We spaniels love to snuffle around in the undergrowth and we come out full of them, which then takes mum ages to pick them all out of our fur. She has taken to using the slippery stuff she sprays on the horses’ tails and spraying us with it to stop the burrs from sticking to us. I find this disappointing as when she’s busy picking those out of our ears it gives her less time to plan training! Mum has been doing more gardening recently which has been lovely for us dogs as we get to potter around with her while she trims and tidies the plants, although I

have to say that I feel insulted when she tells me off for trying to help by picking the heads off the marigolds! Mav gets told off for eating snails, he really is a disgusting little urchin and it’s totally his fault that we have to go to the vet and have horrible medicine to stop us get lungworm from those slimy critters. Yuk! I am a gentleman so I don’t eat slugs or snails, I’m even picky over my bedtime biscuit; only a gravy bone will do you know! I’m really noticing the evenings starting to draw in and as such mum has got obsessed with trying to take pictures of us saying something about perfect light, I try to hide my face as much as I can, I mean, she should be paying me in gravy bones for this, especially my good side! I know it drives her mad, especially as I’m quick to recognise the camera coming out and thus I stick my head in a bush, I also find flopping down when she’s sat me up for a pic is fun too! That little sneak Mav poses like a supermodel, mum loves it and spends hours taking photos of him, lord knows why, he’s nowhere near as handsome as I am and hasn’t got any beauty spots either like me. Mum is talking alot about a place called ‘Devon’ so it sounds as though we may be off on some travels again soon. I really hope it’s like the Cornwall place where we got to run and swim in the sea – I’m not sure who was more tired, us dogs or mum! Jeannette Douglas

Itchy dogs? All dogs scratch, but when it comes persistent you should see your vet. An itchy dog might have a skin infection, a flea problem, an allergy or something else. There’s lots of different treatments your vet can suggest you try, some are to give immediate relief from the irritation, and some are long-term treatments to help with allergies. Like us, dogs can be allergic to pollens, dust/house mites, fungal spores, flea bites and food. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t want you to rush to your vets each time your dog is scratching, so here’s a few things to look out for: • Excessive licking, chewing, biting or scratching • Excessive rolling, rubbing or scooting • Chewing, especially around the base of the tail and paws • Redness of the skin • Changes in the skin, such as sores or darkened colour • Body odour I believe in a preventative approach so recommend regular parasite treatment to avoid flea bites as one of the causes. An apple a day!

John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

s some of you good folk know if you read my scribbles, I’ve spent a lifetime growing , talking, lecturing about… and loving apples. In fact on one particular gardening board I’ve just described my 215th apple variety. With many thousands available I have plenty of material! However, there are a some that are of great local interest to our own patch of the country and I wondered if the history of one of them may be of interest to the fruit lovers among you. Many apples have names that carry a story. Many of these stories are better than the fruit itself. This I believe is one such story… This particular apple was first raised in a garden in Chatham in Kent by a Mr Jacob in 1849. The following year he moved to Petworth and brought his new tree with him. Here he set himself up in business as a ‘Sheep Doctor and Taxidermist’. (I presume he figured if he failed in the first he could always fall back on the second!) Around 1885 he was proud enough to start showing his apple, which he had named ‘Jacobs Strawberry’. Somehow one of the most famous nurserymen of that period, C Bunyard, saw the fruit and, expressing admiration for the red and gold colouring, he bought some scions from Mr Jacob and started to propagate a number of trees. Now, one of Bunyard’s best customers was Lord Sudeley who lived up on his Toddington Estate in Gloucestershire. The nurseryman showed the fruit to him and Sudeley expressed an interest in the

apple. Bunyard, hearing his Lordship remark that the fruit’s colour reminded him of the dress that her Ladyship wore to court promptly renamed the apple Lady Sudeley… creep! It worked though! Lord Sudeley purchased a large amount of the variety for his collection. His Lordship, over the years, bought around a half a million trees from Bunyard’s nurseries for his orchards and with all this fruit duly set up the Toddington Fruit Company. Lord Sudeley was an MP under Gladstone and a member of the Privy Council. Also, beside his political career, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society. Towards the end of the century, due to huge debts and massive changes in agriculture, he sadly became bankrupt in 1893, and this resulted in the loss of the family seat of Toddington Manor. Lady Sudeley – the apple – became popular for a while in the late 19th century and was grown a lot in gardens in the early 1900’s before gradually fading from the scene as it was superseded by new varieties. It’s still available from nurseries, and being a local apple we grew a few trees on the farm and it is a pretty fruit. It crops very early and fresh off the tree eats well. But it’s one of those apples that after a few days goes soft and mushy! So it’s understandable why it has disappeared from the garden scene. I have tried to find out what happened to our Mr Jacob and whether he spent the rest of his days at Petworth but so far no joy. So, he has faded from history but his apple lives on, albeit with another name. Still, the story’s a good one don’t you think? John Nash

Prepare for Spring

eptember is the time to plan your spring bulb purchases. The best selections always sell out quickly and it’s frustrating when the prettiest crocuses and tulips are not available. If you’re planting bulbs for the first time, or in a new area of the garden it helps to have a colour scheme in mind. Being in a boydominated house (three sons and a husband) I like to give some areas of my garden a more girly theme. Tulips are great for this purpose (and are some of my favourite flowers). Try ‘La Belle Epoque’, which is a frothy peony-flowered tulip with pale coffee petals flushed with pink. I would contrast the texture of its showier blooms with another more traditional tulip, ‘Pink Diamond’ or ‘Apricot Beauty’. If you’d prefer less ‘pretty’ and more drama try the almost-black ‘Paul Scherer’, which should flower in late April or early May and makes a good foil to the aforementioned Apricot Beauty, which flowers at the same time. I garden on quite dry limey soil, and I’ve mentioned before my love affair with Bath Chatto’s planting schemes. Sadly, she died in 2018 but her gardens and trust continue and are well worth a visit. This year on their recommendation I’m trying Ornithogalum pyrenaicum, known poetically as the spiked star of Bethlehem, and more prosaically as Bath asparagus. It has subtle, green flowers and grows to 50-60cm tall. It pairs well with silver-

leaved plants like Stachys, which grows like a weed in my garden, and best of all, once established you can harvest it like asparagus. I like to plant up a few pots this month, for some late autumn and winter colour. I favour Rust-toned heucheras, paired with miniature grasses such as Carex buchananii; Oxbloodcoloured ajuga, silver-leaved thymes and small-leaved trailing ivies make great combinations too. I have sempervivums shoved in crevices all over my garden. They are incredibly hardy and will survive all manner of frost and poor weather. We have a lovely sheltered sunny patio with a small table and chairs which is lovely to sit out on even in the winter. A few years ago, I started planting up shallow terracotta trays and a couple of old tin bowls with differing varieties of house leek. I mix one-part horticultural grit to one part peat-free multipurpose compost for the planting mix, and make sure any container has lots of drainage. Handy tip: top dress with grit or stones if you don’t want the birds to start digging around scattering your planting mix and unearthing your plants! I learned the hard way! These little flat planting bowls make a lovely table display and also make wonderful birthday and… erm… Christmas gifts. Happy planning. Rachel Leverton
