Construction Underway New mixed use building underway in Fernwood village

n 2011 Fernwood residents told the Fernwood NRG’s Neighbourhood Visioning Forum that a healthy and vibrant neighbourhood centre needs a critical mass and variety of business and residential units. We listened, and we are adding commercial space and housing in a new building right in Fernwood village. We purchased the house at 1310 Gladstone in November 2013 and after three and a half years of consultation and planning, we started construction of our new building this past June. The house was removed in March but a small change in the location of the gas meter delayed final permitting until May. As soon as we received the final permit, we completed the excavation and prepared to lay the footings. Through our architect, Christine Lintott, we selected a reputable and qualified local construction management firm, Knappett Projects Inc. to construct the building . Since we received our building permit, the Knappett team has been working steadily to get the sumps in place, the footings laid, and the foundation ready to be poured. Once complete, the building will offer two large commercial spaces—one at street level off of Gladstone Avenue, and one at ground level accessed by stairs to the west of the building. There will also be four apartments upstairs—two studio and two one-bedroom units—accessed by stairs as well. So far, everything is proceeding according to the revised schedule. Barring anything unforeseen, Knappett anticipates a completion date in February 2018. In the meantime, Fernwood NRG would like to thank all of our neighbours and fellow residents for your patience during the construction process. It will all be over in a few short months, and we’ll be able to celebrate a new addition to our beautiful village!

Remembering Dave Kesson ›› Bobby Arbess ave Kesson packed more virtues into one man than almost anyone I ever met. He was innately fair, kind, compassionate, caring, thoughtful, generous, easy-going, understanding, fun, hard-working and loyal. I remember moving with my family into a cabin in the Highlands. We had a young baby and a six-year old and it turned out the cabin was badly ratinfested. The owner let me tear out the walls and replace the insulation, which was saturated with the stench of rodent waste. Who showed up to help me on

a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon in July? Dave. He even brought beer. He always put others before himself, a quality most beautifully displayed in his dedication to his partner Tania and his two wonderful sons, Callum and Evan. He had respect for women and children, was nurturing to the disabled and understanding to those with mental health and addictions issues. He was well-read, held thoughtful and heartfelt opinions, and was very balanced in his point of view, tending to seeing all sides of a debate before arriving at his own conclusions. He thought for himself and was his own man, though draw-

ing little attention to himself. He was deeply involved in initiatives to increase food security, affordable housing and to improve the quality of life in Fernwood. In the late 1990s, Fernwood was full of self-gloating characters diligently pursuing one version or another of revolutionary anti-capitalist politics. Around the square, at the Little Fernwood Hall, and at drunken parties there were fervid debates about whether you were an anarchist, communist, Trotskyite, Maoist or Wobbly. One point of commonality was that few of us had any money or kept down Continued on page 2...

›› Lee Herrin On Sunday June 25 th , I took a walk through the neighbourhood. I didn’t have a particular goal in mind, just a walk. I walked by Dave and Tania’s house on my way into the neighbourhood, and I wondered how they were doing. At the time, I didn’t know that Dave was in the hospital and passing on his love to close family and friends on what turned out to be his last day with us. I was shocked and surprised to learn he was gone. He died on June 26th from an aggressive brain tumour. It came on suddenly and took him quickly. He was only 52. I had seen him and his sons only a few months prior on their way to school. There was no hint of what was to come. At his memorial, one of his children’s teachers told a story about him taking tools and materials into the George Jay classroom so that all the children could have the experience of working with tools and building something with their hands. Dave was a great dad, and made lots of time for his kids. He also made lots of time for Fernwood. Dave was a devoted volunteer in Fernwood over the past twenty or more years. He was previously the President of the Fernwood Community Association, and he also served on the Board of Directors of Fernwood NRG. He was there when we purchased the Cornerstone Building in 2005, and he worked on the demolition and construction crew putting the building back together. The building is just one part of his legacy of good works in the neighbourhood. This past spring, he was on the crew that built the toolshed at Spring Ridge

Common. At his memorial, I also learned that Dave and his truck played a huge role in the establishment of the Common—a good portion of the organic material at the site arrived in the back of Dave’s truck. It reminded me that I borrowed his truck too at one point, to move some soil when I was building my own garden on Cedar Hill Road. Dave was incredibly generous of spirit—the Fernwood neighbourhood is better in so many ways because of his time here. At his memorial (held at the Fernwood Community Centre on July 8 th), more than a hundred people attended. Countless people spoke about knowing Dave. Whether in his role as dad, partner and volunteer, or in his work

with people with autism and later the Victoria Cool Aid Society, to a person, everyone said he was kind, caring, and compassionate. And everyone who knew him or met him knows the truth of all that was said. After the memorial, a lemon tree was planted in Dave’s memory on the south side of the shed at the Common. At the suggestion of Dave’s family, Fernwood NRG has established a fund to take donations in support of our urban agriculture initiatives in Fernwood. Donations can be made in person at the Fernwood Community Centre (1240 Gladstone Avenue) or online to the Dave Kesson Urban Agriculture Fund at www.canadahelps.org/dn/6963. Godspeed, Dave. We will miss you.

Dave’s white pickup was in hot demand. Dave was almost always gracious in lending his truck, as long as it was for the common good. He had no idea what stinky, sloppy loads of decomposing organic material from the local breweries and tofu manufacturers were shlepped back to Spring Ridge Common to build the soil. Now, the Common supports a cornucopia of fruit trees, herbs, berry bushes and brambles, for anyone to pick—a legacy

to Dave’s generosity and community spirit. Dave’s last significant community act before passing was to help design and build the tool shed at Spring Ridge Common, the same site where he and Tania, his beloved partner, met. A lemon tree has been planted in loving memory of Dave, next to the shed.

a real job. One exception was Dave: the skinny, blue-eyed, practical anarchist from back east. He was more interested in getting things done than sitting around talking about it; and practical enough to know that if a community was to achieve its vision of food security, someone would need a truck. Top 3 free things to do in Fernwood coming up Check out these great events happening on our neighbourhood in the next couple months... 1) Sunset Market in the Square Wednesdays in September, 4:30 – 7:30pm, Fernwood Square // Shop for fresh, local fruits and veggies and value added food products while enjoying live local music

›› Phoenix Bain (Left) Kids having fun at the Vining Street Party on the Plaza. (Right) Fernwood Square during the Picot Night Market. Photo on right: Rachel Alexandra

The Oaklands Sunset Market has made its mark in Victoria as a community gathering space and a place to access local food and local food producers. It has grown in size and varied in terms of how the Market supports the local community. From adding local musicians, to local breweries, a space has been created to access and celebrate the variety of the island. It is crucially important to be able to provide that access. Which is why, instead of calling our season to end on August 30th, we have decided to create a satellite version in Fernwood Square. We want to bring that same community vibe of the Sunset Market and combine it with that of Fernwood. By bringing local farmers and food producers to the space, we can connect folks to their food directly and be able to re-create the feeling of harvesting your backyard strawberries to share with the other neighbourhood kids, of passing bowls around a table of friends potluck style with various creations, of taking that tomato plant out of the store bought planter and introducing your garden to another variety of fruit. Maybe these are just my memories, but we can all recall something, some place where we’ve come together to share food. Rather than taking a cart to the overwhelming vegetable section at your local grocery conglomerate to find the latest shipment from California, why not be a part of your community, gather in a space with friends, share and connect

with food and farmers to find the perfect bunch of beets.

2) Picot Night Markets Thursdays in August, 4:00 – 9:00pm, Fernwood Square // A beautiful curation of handmade artisan products

›› Arielle Moore Come on down to Fernwood Square, socialize and shop with us! Each night has something new and different to offer—trust us, you’ll want to be at all of them. Each week we run a raffle at our Picot table to raise money for both Fernwood NRG and the Team Tree Campaign—supporting a young girl in our community through treatment and recovery of brain cancer. Tickets start at $2. If that’s not good enough, every

time you enter a raffle you and entered to win the grand prize raffle taking place at the end of August. One of our past prizes included a 60 day moksha yoga pass, honey tobacco bath salts, Boo Too You greeting cards, lavender bundles, a 7Rays incense kit, two Balsam and Vine beaded bracelets, and an XOCOLAT handmade chocolate bar. it is raining, please wait for a sunny day to paint your pole. 8. Clean up. Make sure you clean up all your supplies and keep or dispose of them responsibly. Post your wet paint sign on your finished pole 9. Admire your work and show your friends.

T

he annual Fernwood Pole Painting Day is coming up on Saturday, September 9th. Kids, local artists, families, neighbours, one and all are invited to take part in this community building art project. Please join us and brighten up our neighbourhood with your creative ideas and paint a pole.

Would you like to paint a pole in Fernwood? Here’s how to get involved:

1. Pick-up a Pole Painting Kit. These will be available on Thursday, August 24th at the Picot Night Market in Fernwood Square between 4pm and 9pm. They will also be available outside the Fernwood Community Centre (1240 Gladstone Avenue) on Wednesday, September 6th between noon and 6pm. 2. Design your pole! Simple and bold graphics are great & stencils help, too. Draw out your ideas. 3. Check with the neighbours before painting a pole, drop off our letter for your neighbour—template included in your pole painting kit. 4. Tidy up your pole using a thick pair of gloves and needle nose pliers, carefully remove staples and other things that might interfere with your art! 5. Set-Up your site: Before painting, place newspaper, a drop cloth or cardboard on the sidewalk to ensure no paint gets on the sidewalk. Please be careful and aware of cars and traffic on the road. 6. Prime your pole. We recommend priming your pole with your base coat paint on Friday, September 8th. This will allow time for the pole to dry before you paint your design. It can take a few hours for the base coat to dry. 7. Paint! You are invited to paint your telephone pole on Saturday, September 9th. Did you know all the paint used in this project has been salvaged from Hartland Landfill? If

When do I paint my pole?

Pick up your Pole Painting Kit on Thursday, August 24th at the Picot Night Market in Fernwood Square between 4pm and 9pm or outside the Fernwood Community Centre (1240 Gladstone Avenue) on Wednesday, September 6th between noon and 6pm. Paint your pole on Pole Painting Day—Saturday, September 9th. How long does it take to paint a pole?

It takes approximately 2-3 hours to paint a pole depending on the complexity of your design. You will need to paint a basecoat (primer) and potentially tidy up the pole before painting by removing staples. We suggest doing this on Friday evening. Then Saturday, paint your design. We recommend preparing your design beforehand and using stencils to create your graphics.

If the pole has tags on it but the pole is still beautiful, please take this time to restore your pole! If it is looking old, perhaps some new art is welcome. This is all up to you, the neighbourhood! What are the rules?

FAQs

How do I register or sign-up to paint the pole outside my house?

There is no formal registration for painting a telephone pole. To ensure you get to paint the pole you wish, please download and print or pick up a “This Pole has an Artist” sign and tape it to your pole. When your design it created, please inform and discuss with your neighbours, letting them know what art everyone will enjoy together. Fernwood NRG does not assign poles.

I would rather the pole near my house not be painted, how do I ensure this?

What does a pole painting kit include?

• • • • •

August 2017

An info sheet about pole painting One large container of primer/basecoat paint Four to five containers of colourful paint (you choose the colours) Signage: “This Pole has an Artist”, “Drive Slow”, and “Wet Paint” signs A letter for your neighbour letting them know what you would like to paint the pole you’ll enjoy together

No splatter or drip painting Avoid using text in your design No logos or commercial images No overt political and religious symbols or messaging No painting is allowed on the sidewalk or any surface other than the pole Have fun!

My pole is already painted, am I allowed painting over it?

The beauty of the Pole Painting Project is the temporary nature of the art, the community spirit, and vibe it creates. While it is not our role to choose who gets to paint which pole, we highly suggest using our letter to inform and discuss with your neighbour before painting.

Create a “Please leave this Pole Blank” sign or come by the Fernwood Community Centre to pick one up. Post it on the pole near your house that you wish to not be painted. On May 28th 2011, Fernwood NRG, Emily Grav of The Paint Box School of Art and Beth Threlfall coordinated the painting of over 100 telephone poles with bright, bold, colourful designs on Fernwood Road and Gladstone Avenue. Since then, Fernwood NRG has organized the painting and touching up of hundreds of telephone poles. This project has helped to slow traffic, curb signature tagging, and create warm, friendly, and beautiful streets. All the paint used in this project has been salvaged from Hartland Landfill.

Managing mildew in the organic garden ›› Alysha Punnett Powdery mildew crops up at this time of year and is often perplexing to gardeners. Isn’t it too hot and dry for fungi to thrive?! Well, while the weather may feel hot and dry, there actually is enough moisture in the air for mildew to get around. This is why fungal issues are common in late summer when the days heat up fast and the morning dew or a light rain provides enough moisture for them to spread. Add to this the fact that many plants are weak and susceptible to pests and disease from drought stress in this driest and hottest part of the growing season, and you have a perfect recipe for powdery white squash leaves. Plants can still grow relatively unaffected if the infection is mild, however if it becomes so severe that the majority of the plant is covered in powdery white, this can inhibit the plant’s ability to photosynthesize and grow. Not to mention it makes the plant unappetizing. As with pest management, prevention is still our best friend here, and it’s important to be patient with treatments as they usually work best when applied frequently.

Identification: Powdery mildew is commonly seen on squash and cucumber leaves at this time of the year, but it can show up on pretty much any kind of green leaf. It starts as downy white spots on the undersides or tops of leaves and gradually spreads to take over the whole leaf surface. Management: Trim plants throughout the season to maintain airflow throughout your garden beds. Ensure plants are receiving enough water. Overhead irrigation can cause fungal spores to spread as drops of water splash onto leaves, bouncing them into the air and onto surrounding plant material. Try drip irrigation in perennial beds instead, or try to limit overhead watering to the morning so leaves will have time to dry during the day. Make and spray compost tea every 2 weeks throughout the growing season to outcompete the bad fungi with good fungi. Other DIY sprays include a 1:10 dilution of milk to water or a diluted horseradish tea. Happy zucchini bread, cake, muffin, and noodle making with your harvest! Alysha Punnett is the Site Manager and Community Education Coordinator at the Compost Education Centre.
