Fernwood NRG 2018 Annual Report

Annual Report 2018

A Word from the Chair ›› he last year has shown that Fernwood continues to be a thriving neighbourhood. In that time we have seen the culmination of many of the Fernwood NRG’s efforts. The mixed-use building which was built at 1310 Gladstone is fully rented, and the anchor tenant is the Fernwood Yoga Den. The new space is larger and more functional than the previous space. We’re proud that we’ve built a building that looks like it was always there. The childcare services continue to thrive. The Provincial Government’s Universal Childcare Protype daycare pilot program has allowed us to offer care at much more affordable price—less than $200 per month. We think this helps make life in our city more affordable for families and we hope it becomes a permanent program. To that end, the province has asked us and parents to participate in surveys and other measurement and data collection exercises. We’ve been more than happy to work with them because we’re hopeful that our participation in this program will help it become a new provincial program

T

available to families across the province. It’s an exciting prospect to be at the leading edge of the first new social program in at least a generation. The community centre sees some other very vibrant activities that contribute to out neighbourhood community. If you haven’t attended yet, Family Dinner Nights on Mondays allow people to enjoy a healthy hot meal and meet your fellow Fernwoodians. If you’re younger and far cooler than me, you might want to attend the Student Dinner Night on Wednesdays. They include entertainment that ranges from local musicians to the best slam poets in the city. Then again, you might prefer more private company. If that’s the case, don’t miss out on the Good Food Box, which is like a buyer’s club to help you get cheaper groceries. It’s packed and delivered by a wonderful team of volunteers and we prioritize locally grown, unsprayed produce with a focus on seasonal fruits and vegetables. These are only some of the programs delivered through the Community Centre. There are many more programs that I could talk about, but I would encourage you to explore fernwoodnrg.ca to learn

Michael Lancaster

about them. So, what’s next? That’s a good question. We’ve built affordable housing and created food sustainability programs. The village businesses are thriving. FernFest has become one of the hottest (free) tickets on the Victoria social calendar. We’ve painted our hearts on our telephone poles. But our neighbourhood is continuing to change. There are more kids and the schools are expanding. We want to keep Fernwood Funky. To do that, we want to tap into the

dynamism of the people who helped us make this the most livable neighbourhood in the city. The Fernwood NRG Board has some great new volunteer board members from the neighbourhood. With that comes new energy and ideas. We will be exploring ways to tap into our neighbourhoods creative ideas. This might take the form of another visioning forum like we had in 2011. One things for certain, we want everyone to stay tuned for the next chapter. 2018 Annual Report

A year in review ernwood NRG is your neighbourhood resource group. Whether you want to share a meal with neighbours, find a summer camp for your child, or even get a great haircut, we’re the folks to help you—right here in Fernwood. And the list goes on—childcare, family support programs, recreation programs, affordable housing, FernFest, the Good Food Box… we even publish this newspaper—the Village Vibe. All of this work is important and rewarding, and it takes a lot of people to make it happen. On the page below are

just a few of the folks you might have seen around the neighbourhood going about their work. If you do see them, please say “hello”; and if you are so inclined, maybe say “thank you.” They, and all of the 93 people who worked for the Fernwood Neighbourhood Resource Group in 2018 are a big part of what makes Fernwood the great neighbourhood that it is. As always, even 93 of us cannot do it alone. So thank you to all of our funders, donors, supporters and volunteers in 2018. We are so much more because of your generous and continuing support. Thank you.

Report on our Principles & Values 2018 In 2005, Fernwood NRG drafted a Declaration of Principles and Values—eleven statements that guide our work. You can read them all at fernwoodnrg.ca/fernwood-nrg-about-us/our-principles but today we want to report back on Principles Two and Four. Principle Two—We are committed to ensuring neighbourhood control or ownership of neighbourhood institutions and assets.

Fernwood has grown a good percentage of businesses that are owned and operated by real people who live in our neighbourhood, not distant holding companies. This means decisions that affect Fernwood are made in Fernwood, and dollars that are spent in Fernwood are earned in Fernwood. We want to continue and strengthen this trend wherever possible.

Of course we made our biggest leap in becoming a social enterprise, buying the Cornerstone Building and renovating it into affordable housing and commercial spaces. We then built the Park Place apartments. When properties came up for sale in the heart of village we knew we had to ensure they would come under neighbourhood ownership. One property was renovated by the Fernwood Inn into Fernwood Pizza, plus an office space and two residences, and we just completed the newest building in the neighbourhood at 1310 Gladstone which adds four more

residential units and some beautiful and bright commercial space to the village centre. Neighbourhood people do neighbourhood-scaled redevelopment. Principle Four—We are committed to the creation and support of neighbourhood employment.

In order to provide child care for almost 100 kids, as well as youth, family, seniors, and recreational programming, we employ several full and part-time staff. We also operate Studio 1313 Hair Design and the expanded Fernwood Yoga Den as

social enterprises that support our nonprofit programming, and these businesses bring still more jobs into the neighbourhood. The magic of localism is the multiplier effect, where the same dollar gets spent several times over. We earn money in the neighbourhood and pay wages in the neighbourhood. These wages are often spent in the neighbourhood—on a delicious sandwich at Little June, upcycled clothing at Luna Collective, or a Pilates class at SOMA. These local businesses repeat the cycle of earning, spending and employment.
