Works on a $96 million Forty Bends and $70 million Hartley Valley Safety package have begun. By Rich Evans Federal Member for Calare John Cobb said the Australian Government was fully funding the Forty Bends component of the project. “This part of the project will upgrade the existing two and three-lane undivided road to a full, three-lane divided highway,” Mr Cobb said. “These improvements will also reduce the chance of black ice forming on the road, improve the road’s alignment and boost traffic efficiency for all motorists including freight operators.” The second component of this project is the Hartley Valley Safety Works, which will receive $56 million from the Australian Government and $14 million from the New South Wales Government. These works will upgrade several intersections and widen the road shoulders, which will allow traffic to enter and leave the highway safely and efficiently. New South Wales Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said improving road safety will have wide-ranging benefits for the local community and all motorists.

the Editor The School of New Thought. Sounds like something that the great minds, the technology giants, the great philosophers, are sitting in a room creating - trying to take the lessons of the last decade and develop a model that works for us as a society. Well, that’s what it might sound like, and I am sure that is what they thought at the time. But the time was the turn of the century. (Not this one, the last one.) I picked up a book the other day from A Reader’s Heaven (if you haven’t been in to their shop on Mort St, do yourself a favour and go). The book was title ‘The Magic Seven’, and was written by Lida A Churchill. This tiny, well worn, little book spoke, in no uncertain terms, of the author’s belief that we are in charge of our lives and that our level of ‘success’ is either enabled or limited by the way we think. I have read many old books on this subject. ‘As A Man Thinketh’, by James Allan and ‘The Richest Man in Babylon’ by George S Classon are two of my favourite books of all time. Seeing ‘The Magic Seven’ got me thinking - why didn’t this information sink in to the culture of the time? The early 1900s were a time of great change - people stopped riding horses and began driving cars, technology led the way and changed many people’s whole lives. We live in a similar time now. Technology is changing at such a rapid rate it is hard to keep up. Sometimes we feel like it’s overtaking us and there are concerns raised, however, over time we often come to accept it. Who would have believed just 20 years ago that a mobile phone would be something commonplace - back then it was a luxury that only a fraction of the population could afford. Now, a staggering 76% of the population own a smartphone, a device with 1000 more times computing power than was used in the first moon landing. However, familiar things keep us grounded. Which is why we went into the newspaper business. We knew that something was missing and that was the communities stories. Whilst Facebook is great at sharing those stories to the small percentage of the population engaging in that manner, there is a vast world of people out there who still like things the way they were. We are launching a number of websites over the coming months to support this great community, the first of those is whatsonlithgow.com.au. We see these as complimentary to the paper, giving you further information on things you may have seen in the paper. It’s a changing world, but as independently operated local business, we are in charge of that change.
Yours Sincerely Mrs Rachael Young, Secretary, Rydal A, H & P Society.
All the best, Rich Evans

Without them we could not continue, so I would like to thank them also. This year I would like to add a special thankyou to some of our younger generation who were a huge help over the weekend. Many of these kids will hopefully be the ones who carry on the running of our show in years to come and from what I saw over the weekend the Rydal A, H & P Society will be in good hands. The Rydal Show is a true community event and in these difficult times for our rural communities, is an important social event which provides a respite from the worries of life on the land . I would like to thank the Rydal & District community for helping and supporting the Rydal Show.

Roaring 20’s comes to town By Kellie Evans It was with great delight that Rich and I attended the second annual Roaring 20’s Glamour & Gowns Ball, held at the Civic Ballroom at the Tony Luchetti Showground on Saturday night. Now, I will say that getting dressed up is not Rich’s cup of tea however he was a great sport and pulled together a very dashing “Bootleggers” outfit to go along with the theme. The night was very well attended and I was so very excited to see that all of the guests had gone to so much trouble and looked so amazing! The evening kicked off with everyone taking their seats and welcoming the official party including Councillors Higlett and Pilbeam, General Manager for Council Roger Bailey as well as Minister for Local Government Paul Toole. They were then followed by our Mayor Maree Statham and the Special Guest, TV great - Paula Duncan. Paula spoke very kindly of our region and was incredibly honoured to be able to attend the night.
We were treated to delicious food by Salud, whose team of servers were extremely polite and accommodating. After dinner, the bands had everyone up and on the dance floor. We were entertained by the musical talents of The West Brothers and The Fabulous Shapelles. All in all, it a really enjoyable night that saw all the guests have a ROARING good time! The next day, Eskbank House was transported back to the 20’s as it hosted their fabulous Garden Party! Guests were treated to a wonderful high tea, kindly provided by The Ladies of the Vale. With fun in the air and only a little bit of rain, there was croquet, supported by the Lithgow Croquet Club, totem tennis and quoits. For those who were into quieter pursuits, there was chess, cards and darts or a look through some vintage cars, provided by the Lithgow Car Club. The Lithgow Living History group were there to teach some dances to the music of Juzt Jazz Duo. Another highly successful weekend of fun and glamour to commemorate the Blue Mountains, Lithgow & Oberon Tourism’s Roaring 20’s Festival.

“A major accident can cause havoc for motorists, but it can also cause untold grief for friends and families,” Mr Toole said. “Not only will this project increase efficiency by minimising the impact of an accident on traffic, it will ensure lives aren’t lost unnecessarily. “Although this project has created jobs for the local community, I think the greater benefit comes from the lives saved, and I am looking forward to seeing the works completed in late 2016.” The Australian Government is contributing $200 million to the Great Western Highway – Katoomba to Lithgow package, with another $50 million being contributed by the New South Wales Government One of the great outcomes of a project of this size and nature is the boost it gives to local employment. Lead contracting company for the initial stages of the project, Seymour Whyte, have engaged a local recruitment company to assist them in securing local workers for as many available positions as possible. Whilst the unavoidable disruptions to the local community will be a test on patience, the long term benefit of this type of main arterial road leading to the central west will have benefits for the entire region.

Drama classes at Meadow Flat Country Music Night draws a great crowd Eskbank House
Drama classes at Esbank House are going well, with the students showing a rapid and exciting level of progress according to their teacher Catherine Lockley. “The students are so bright, enthusiastic and focused that it is nothing but a pleasure to teach them each week,” she said. “They have already begun to move beyond basic Stage concepts into relatively difficult performances and assessment and are continually surprising me with their energy, focus and talent.” According to Catherine they are about to head into contemporary script analysis and performance and Musical Theatre/Singing. She finished by saying, “I am genuinely excited to see what they achieve!”

Last Saturday, over 200 people gathered at Meadow Flat Recreation Ground to enjoy a night filled with good company and great country music. By Irene Bowie-Johnson The night included great music by Cliff Berry & Three 4 Country, Peter Horan and Nancy Dennis. It also featured performances by the Lithgow Line Dancers, and the Bashira Belly Dancers from Bathurst. “It was really great,” said Margaret Wilson, a Line Dancing performer. “An absolutely brilliant night. Both Maureen and Bruce did a really great job pulling it together.” Maureen and Bruce both said they have heard nothing but good comments about the night. “Everyone loved it,” they said. “It went down really well. Kirkconnell to reopen Kirkconnell Correctional Centre will be opened to cater for the increased prison population, Attorney General Brad Hazzard announced on Tuesday. “Recent legislative changes and active policing aimed at ensuring community safety have seen an increase in the prison population which necessitates the NSW Government taking additional measures to house inmates,” Mr Hazzard said. “Recently the Government announced initiatives including building new modular cells and increasing prisoner numbers in existing facilities. “Today the Government is taking the next step in keeping our community safe by re-opening Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.” Local MP Paul Toole said: “The Baird Government made an assurance that Kirkconnell Correctional Centre would be re-opened if prison populations were to go up, and we have kept this promise.” “This is a great outcome for the region and a welcome boost to the local economy with 60 jobs created at the prison.”
The reopening of Kirkconnell Correctional Centre follows staged expansions at centres including Long Bay and Lithgow, where 635 additional beds were added over the past year. When fully operational, Kirkconnell Correctional Centre will hold 260 minimum security inmates. A work crew of 60 inmates will move into the centre in the next few weeks to assist in preparing it for more inmates, who will arrive gradually. Work is scheduled to be completed by July 2015, at a cost of $4 million. “Some years ago when the prison population fell the Government closed various facilities and channelled the savings into hospitals, roads and schools,” Mr Hazzard said. “Today with the increasing prison population it is a sensible time to re-open Kirkconnell Correctional Centre. I thank the Corrective Services officers who have worked extremely well and look forward to working with them as we re-establish Kirkconnell Correctional Centre,” Mr Hazzard said.

were staying at the camping ground and some of them made a real night of it.” “I was sad I had to leave,” said Margaret. “I left around ten and the party was still going.” The night was held to raise money for a toilet block to go on the recreation ground. “We’ve been given a grant to help build the block,” said Maureen, “but it only gets us part of the way. We’re trying to raise the last of the funds with events like the music night.” The night was a great success with over 200 people coming through the gate. Maureen and Bruce both said that the success of the music night has them already wanting to plan the next one. “There will probably be another music night next year,” said Bruce.

BUSINESS
Referrals in business By Ben Fewtrell Are referrals important for a business? Undoubtedly Yes! Not just important, referrals are invaluable. I had a dog food business a decade ago, and it was largely successful because of referrals. We always made it a point to request our customers, every one of them, to refer us to their friends and relatives. We also offered incentives for referrals. Each month, the referral bonuses were different to help motivate them further. How often should referral campaigns be done for a business? As often as possible! Referrals are not something you should be reactive about; you should be proactive with them. You should never wait for referrals, you should request your customers to refer others – in other words, you should ask. When someone got referrals for our beauty salon, we would gift them French Champagne. Let me ask the ladies – wouldn’t you refer us more friends, if we gave you a bottle of French Champagne for every single referral? Of course, the first thing you would do is gulp down half of it and text everyone you know. Wouldn’t

you? It certainly worked for us. In fact, one of our customers got us at least one referral every week. When one of my staff told me that one particular person was getting one bottle of French Champagne every week from us for her referrals, I arranged to meet her. I discovered she owned a restaurant and her referrals were her customers. Oh, and the Champagne? She sold it for a profit! When you plan for referral campaigns, how do you ask for referrals? What are you planning to do with those referrals? You have to consider these important factors for the best results. One, make referring easy for your customers. You could probably give them a card, or come up with a way that makes referring easy. You can probably hand over something, which they can give to their friends. Something they can use as an invite for their friends, as it is easy and exciting that way. Two, think referral rewards. When a customer refers someone, pamper him or her. Any referral gift is fine. Sometimes, even a thank-you note should do. When we were running a dog food business, our offer was free dog food for a week, for one referral. I still remember,
an old lady would send us at least one referral every week and got free food for her dog for about three years! She would literally apologize every time she dropped in to get free food and take advantage of our offer. But, I always reassured her it was fine. She used to hand out our brochures in exhibitions, parks and wherever she could to get us referrals. She had one tiny pup, which needed about $6 worth food for a week. In return, I made $38 in profit every week from her referrals. Good bargain, isn’t it? Most of our customers got us at least two referrals every week. With customers getting you more referrals, you’re going to make a fortune if you utilize those referrals!

Mark Hoy’s career began in June 2004 after suffering a debilitating injury that ended a 20 year career as an Electrical Technician working in Power Stations & Coal Mines in the local area. Fortunately, he had a Financial Adviser who astutely set him up with Income Protection as part of an insurance protection plan designed specifically to protect his family from such a scenario. Mark has lived in Lithgow all his life, his father was born here; in the house his mother still resides in, a stone’s throw from where he lives. His father worked in the one job at the Small Arms Factory for 49 years. Lithgow is one of the great industrial towns of the 20th century, from its Coal Mines, to the Steel Mill in the early 1900’s, through to the Small Arms Factory that employed 12,000 people during WW2 producing 4000 Rifles, 150 Bren guns and 70 Vickers machine guns per week. Mark’s philsophy is to approach the needs of his clients with a view to helping them. If he cannot make improvements to their current situation, he does not charge them, unlike many other financial planners. The good news however is that most people do need help, but are unaware and not as well prepared as what Mark was when his family needed it most. Mistakes Made By Home-Sellers Pt 1 When the time comes to sell a home, there are numerous common mistakes sellers make. Following are some easy steps to explain what you can do to avoid these mistakes and turn your sale into an easier process. By Christine Dodson Failing to Check Out the Agent
Testimonials! Testimonials are a great way to see what past clients think of an agent. Not just one or two but an array of clients from recent sales. What are they saying? What is the common theme and is it what you are looking for? Do the testimonials say the agent is a nice person and easy to work with or they got a great price, was a quick sale, stress free. What matters most to you? Find out about the agents background. How long have they been in real estate sales and what training have they done?
Open Agency Agreements
Many sellers think that if they list their property with a couple of agents it will give them more exposure to the market. One problem with open agency agreements is that it can give the perception that a property is difficult to sell. Have you ever driven past a property with two or more different agency signboards out the front? What have you thought? Another problem with an open agency agreement is you will generally only achieve the highest price of your worst negotiator. For example, if a buyer approaches the first agent who stands firm on the asking price, then they go to
LIVESTOCK & PROPERTY P O R T L A N D Incorporating Portland Real Estate
the other agent who says they may be able to buy the $300,000 property for $270,000, who do you think the buyer will want to negotiate with and who would get you the highest price?
Overpricing
Sometimes in an endeavour to list a property for sale, an agent will overprice a property. This can be a common occurrence with inexperienced agents as they are overzealous to win listings. You should always ask for evidence on how an agent is pricing your property, ranging from similar properties they have sold personally, to properties in the area that other agents have sold. Agents will generally give you a 10% price range of where they feel your property sits in the market. A savvy agent will then recommend that the property be put to market just in excess of this price to try to achieve an optimum price. This marketed price however, cannot be more than 10% higher than the highest price the agent has said your property will achieve on the agency agreement.
Advertising Reduced Prices
While an optimistic price may be advertised at first, if down the track a decision has been made to decrease the price of your property, do not let an agent advertise it as “motivated vendor”, “price reduced”, “vendor committed elsewhere” or “must sell”. This will immediately detract from your eventual sale price and will make you look desperate to sell. A tactful agent will always look at a way to advertise the price change without jeopardising your eventual sale price.
An Agent Who Treats Buyers Badly
While a vendor is the one who pays the real estate agent their commission, you need to make sure you aren’t employing an agent who treats buyers badly. You want an agent who always gets back to buyers, whether it be by email, phone or walking through the office door. Agents who treat buyers respectfully and

Test out agents before you decide to sell by enquiring about a property they have on the market. See if they get back to you, how much time they take with you and if they can answer questions you ask. Following these steps will help avoid mistakes and will result in an easier more profitable sale.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
SUNDAY Downton Abbey on PRIME7 at 9.30pm
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a sweet ensemble movie that thrives off amazing performances by its silver haired cast.
MONDAY My Kitchen Rules on PRIME7 at 7.30pm
By Irene Bowie-Johnson The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of British retirees who decide, for a variety of reasons, to ‘outsource’ their retirement to India. They each respond to an online ad and travel to Jaipur, thinking that they are going to live in luxury at the ‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ - a place that summons visions of a leisure filled retirement that won’t cost the earth. Evelyn, a newly widowed woman, goes because she can’t afford retirement in Britain, where the costs are high, while Graham seeks a long lost love. Douglas and Jean also need to downsize, having lost their pension in a family investment, while Muriel needs cheap hip surgery. Madge seeks a rich husband, and Norman is just there to chase women.
BOTTLE SHOP SPECIALS 2 Cullen Street, Portland NSW 2847
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: The seven retirees meet in India, where they are picked up by the Hotel’s young owner, Sonny, whose big dreams are not entirely matched to reality. All seven discover, to their surprise (and, to some, horror) that the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a shell of its former self and far less luxurious than imagined. Some of them can’t cope with the idea of living a much rawer experience than expected, while others let the Hotel and their life in India lead them to a new start in life. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the perfect movie to watch when you want something that is heart-lifting and sweet. It has some real laughs, and the message at its heart (that it’s never too late to start over) is delivered with a sincerity that is genuinely joyful. The actors, in particular, make the movie spectacular. Their performances are uniformly brilliant and bring the large cast of characters to life. With actors such as Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel leading the cast that shouldn’t be a surprise. A great movie, and one that everyone can enjoy, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is well worth the watch.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 21 - FRI 27 Not everyone enjoys martial arts movies, but if you’re a fan of films that feature beautiful martial arts battles, amazing scenery and engrossing drama, then Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one of the best. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an almost fantasy story that takes place in Qing China. It’s set during a time when miracles were credible and spirits & gods were present in the world. It makes sense, then, that the zen warriors can float through the air, skim the water and battle in trees and on rooftops. In it, Li Mu Bai is a martial arts master who is about to retire, but is called back to avenge the death of his master who was killed by Jade Fox.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 21 - FRI 27 The new season of Downton Abbey is beginning and it opens on the dawn of a new era. It is 1924 and a new labour government heralds changes that may impact the Downton way of life for good. For those of you who have been following the series, it will be exciting to see the return, and eventual resolution, of Lady Mary’s flirtations with Charles Blake and Anthony Gillingham. Meanwhile Anna’s journey to recovery is only beginning Edith’s secret is in jeopardy. Even if you haven’t been following the series, this season would be a great place to start - it may take a little while to get the names straight, but the story would be quickly engrossing.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 21 - FRI 27 The Big Bang Theory has been around for awhile, but it’s stayed incredibly fresh. In this episode Leonard, Howard and Raj are prompted to consider their own legacies while cleaning out the office of recently deceased Professor Roger Abbott. Rather than checking through the material to see if there is anything of worth, they largely throw everything out without reading through it. But then Leonard comes across a fifty year old gift to the professor from his mother and they start looking at what they are throwing away, especially some complicated notes which they don’t understand…

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 21 - FRI 27 One of my favourite new series, Forever may not be a slick as some other shows, but it’s incredibly emotionally rich and utterly engaging. The show centres on Henry, a Medical Examiner who works with the police to solve homicides. Henry seems, on the surface, to be nothing more than a polite, charming and incredibly well spoken British expat. But, as you quickly discover, Henry is much more than what he appears. He is a 200 year old man who is, to all intents and purposes immortal. A great fusion of magic realism with police procedural, Forever should have something to engage everyone.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 21 - FRI 27 I have a definite weakness for quirky documentaries about ingenuity and invention - combine that with a historical take on the forces that these inventions have had on our lives, and I’m in documentary heaven. How We Got To Now with Steven Johnson is a six part documentary series that reveals the story behind the remarkable ideas that made modern life possible; the unsung heroes that brought them into the world – and the unexpected and bizarre consequences each of these innovations has triggered. In this episode Steven Johsnon reveals how clean water has changed our world and the way we live our lives.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 21 - FRI 27 The Graham Norton show is cheeky and a little bit silly, but there’s no doubt that Graham is able to get a lot out of his guests. His interviews are often fast paced, but they’re filled with a wealth of content for the viewer. In this episode he interviews Jamie Oliver, Michael Keating and Ian McKellen. Also making an appearance is One Direction something that many of the younger viewers will love. Pick Of The Day

Which plants to choose?
By Barbara Moran Gardening can be made easier if you select the right plants for your space in the garden. When considering your choice you have to ask yourself the following questions. • How large would you like the plant to grow? • Is it full sun or a shady spot? • Would you like plants that flower? • Are you after an evergreen or deciduous plant? • What type of soil do you have? • Are you prepared to improve your soil by adding organic matter? • Your time constraints and whether you have time to water and maintain your plant. Once you have considered these options then the following tips may help. • Plants that require Full Sun need at least 6 hours of sun per day. • Plants that will only receive about four hours of sun can be considered part shade. • Plants that receive no direct sunlight are Shadeloving plants. • Plants that require good drainage should not be planted in wet areas. • If your soil is a heavy clay soil then you can improve it by digging in some good compost mix. Check the alkalinity of your soil and if it very alkaline then add a little sulphur and some good composted material will help. If your soil is very acid you can add a little lime remembering that some plants like Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Daphne, Camellias and Pieris prefer an acid soil and will not tolerate lime. In saying this again finding the right plant for your conditions will make gardening a lot easier. I have
learnt over time that if I have a plant that is struggling in it’s current position, I move it but never do this in the Summer heat, it is best done in Autumn. There are also exceptions to this rule also with native plants, they are generally not happy with being transplanted. This summer has been a good season for roses and by dead-heading them regularly after a flush of flowers they will continue to bloom until Easter. After pruning any plants it is always a good idea to feed them with an appropriate fertilizer that suits the application and there are many to choose from. In late winter I usually dig in some organic matter such as Cow Manure and Blood & Bone around the roses since it is cooler and sometimes too much manure type composts can burn. In summer however I like to use a soluble rose food or Sudden Impact for Roses which is a pelleted fertilizer and give them a good water in. Flowering at the moment are Hollyhocks, Gaura, Cosmos, Dahlias, Salvias and Penstemons. My plant of the week is a new variety of cosmos called Choca Mocca. It has a deep, reddish black open star shaped flower with a distinctive chocolate fragrance. They are easy to look after and prefer regular moisture with a good organic soil. Like most perennials just prune back in winter and fertilize when you observe new growth appearing. Barbara Moran is a long time team member of GoodEarth Nursery at Lidsdale. She has an extensive knowledge and experience of both exotic and native gardens.

BOUGHT TO YOU BY BLINKY BILL CHILDCARE PORTLAND
Do you care for someone who has a mental illness?
The passing of Dr Leonie Geldenhuys and her husband shocked the community last year and left behind three children in dire straits. Financial support for Janie, Evert and Leon to date has been very thankfully received, however much more needs to be done to ensure these children receive proper care and have a financial viable future. There will be a major fundraiser for the children to be held on 1st March at the Lithgow Workmen’s Club. The event will be a family day of great fun, food and prizes. Everyone is welcome to attend. Live auction of donated goods will occur, with proceeds going to the Glendenhuys Children’s Trust Fund. There will also be trivia, Live music, afternoon tea and much more.
The Geldenhuys Charity Fundraiser will be held on the March 1 at the Lithgow Workmen’s Club from 2:30pm – 7:00pm For more information about the fundraiser, or to find out how you can help, contact Nikki Baraz on 02 6353 1644.
A new destination to find out What’s On in the Lithgow Region We at the Village Voice have been looking long and hard for a lot of information over the last 12 months. Dates and times for community meetings, contact details for people running major events, all sorts of things. We came to realise there was no centralised point for finding out about everything that was on in the region. SO in true Village Voice fashion, we just went ahead and created it! Welcome to the all new whatsonlithgow. com.au website, a centralised place that is free for the community, and where it is easy to add your event. Just email us at editor@villagevoice. net.au and we will get your event added to the site

No liquid or chemical items will be collected, nor will any items requiring the use of a shovel. Anyone who wishes to register for this service should contact Council’s Customer Service Office on 6354 9999 or, alternatively they may register on Council’s website www.council.lithgow.com. Homework Zone Library Lovers Join in the Valentine’s Day Celebrations! Resumes at It wasn’t Valentine’s Day on February 14 in the Library World, it was Library Lovers Day and Lithgow Library celebrated a little earlier, on Friday the 13th. A large number of “Library Lovers” joined Library staff and Council representatives for morning tea to help the staff thank their valued ‘lovers’, with one singled out for special attention as the Library’s “Greatest Lover”. Dorothy Luchetti is Lithgow Library Learning Centre’s greatest Library Lover for 2015. Dorothy has had a very long association with the Lithgow Library which started when she was 11 years old and rode her bike to the Library almost every day during school holidays to borrow books. That association continues today with Dorothy and husband John still being regular borrowers. Dorothy believes that without the Library she would not have become the reader that she is today. In the 1990’s Dorothy was one of the main supporters of creating a “Friends of the Library” group, which sadly did not come to fruition at that time, but has done so in recent years. Lithgow Library Learning Centre would like to thank everyone who supports the Library and let them know that it was a very difficult task to choose just one lover from everyone who was nominated and
Lithgow Library Learning Centre
hopes that members will nominate themselves again next year. Lithgow Library Learning Centre and the branches at Wallerawang and Portland would like to remind everyone that it is simple to become a Library lover. The Library is free to join and most of the services are free. So why not drop in and talk to staff about what the Library can do for you and you too may become one of our “Greatest Lovers”. Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham was thrilled that “Our Library is taking an occasion that is usually considered only for couples and creating an event for the community that emphasizes the important role the Library plays in the life of the people of Lithgow’s LGA”.

PORTLAND
Big win for Portland U10’s
The Portland Under 10’s cricket team traveled to Bathurst last Saturday to play St Pats, who were undefeated up until Saturday. Portland have only 3 players playing in the correct age group. The rest who make up the team range from 6 to 9 years of age. This means that beating a team which consists entirely of 10 year olds was a massive achievement. It shows there are some great kids coming out of Portland. Portland batted first with Kye Cameron and Nate Green top scoring. Also batting well for Portland was Braith Green, Ben McKulkin, Logan Ward and Thomas Huijser Portland scoring a good total of 95 runs. Portland’s best in bowling was Kye Cameron, 2 wickets, Ben McKulkin, 2 wickets, iwht Cody Phillips, Thomas Huijser, Braith Green, Nate Green, Joel Lamb, Logan Ward, Deccan Cutting and Conner Miles all picking up a wicket and bowling St Pats out for 80 runs. Coach Shane Green can’t believe how much the kids have improved over the Christmas break and it;s starting to show. Portland Cricket is going to be strong for years to come.

Success for a young local archer NOW OPEN SATURDAYS 9am-12pm CLOSED SATURDAYS IF NO BOOKINGS

By Irene Bowie-Johnson It has been an incredible journey for young archer Blake Hayes, 15, of Portland Central School who has recently been chosen to shoot for the official Benson Shooting Team, and now shoots a Prime STX bow - a great achievement for a Junior archer who has only been competing in the sport for a year. Blake started archery with the Lithgow Valley Archers a year ago, Since then he has been very successful, competing all around NSW in state and branch titles and winning many medals, plaques. “He’s come along in leaps and bounds,” said Jeremy Cooke, Blake’s coach and mentor at the Lithgow Valley Archery Club. “He has the right attitude for archery. The biggest thing, especially for teenagers, is juggling your social life and still having enough time to practice. Blake hasn’t really struggled with that. He’s been quite good at keeping the focus.” Blake’s focus has paid off. He’s rocketed to ‘A’ Grade very quickly - a great testament to his skill and dedication to the sport. Blake has recently joined the Penrith City Archers for target archery and has joined their junior development
squad. He’s currently working toward a spot on the state team and training for the junior world titles in 2016. “Blake’s cross participation in field and target archery is great for him and the sport,” said Jeremy. Blake said he has a lot of people he needs to thank for their help over the last year. In particular he wanted to thank Mr Brian Coole who noticed his talent and helped him from the very beginning; his coach and mentor Mr Jeremy Cooke also from Lithgow Valley Archers who is helping him grow as an archer; and the 3D and ABA archery family for being so helpful and supporting him. Blake’s recent success may sound like a lot, but it is really only the start of a new journey. Over the coming weeks and months he’s going to be kept busy with a very demanding schedule of Qualifiers and Championships. “We’re all off to the State IFAA (International Field Archers Association) state championships down in Bateman’s Bay this weekend,” Jeremy said. “There’s a lot scheduled, especially for archers who cross participate.” We’d like to congratulate Blake on his achievements and wish him all the best. We are sure there will be more great stories to come.
