Photo by David Hill A record number of grizzly ghouls from every tomb closed in on Lithgow under a dramatic stormy sky to attend Australia’s largest community Halloween party on Saturday, October 29. Organised and hosted by Lithgow City Council, with support from local business sponsors including Lithgow McDonald’s, Centennial Coal, Energy Australia, Village Voice and Lithgow Workies, the event featured spook-tacular Vivid-style lighting displays and boo-tiful decorations. Main St was transformed into a fun-filled pedestrian zone with themed precincts, market stalls, rides,
ghoulish selfie props including a huge mummy and a skeleton wall (even the statue of local star athlete Marjorie Jackson dressed up for the occasion). Highlights of Lithgow Halloween `16 included Australia’s biggest Trick or Treat lolly grab and Australia’s number one King of Pop impersonator, Jason Jackson, performing some of Michael Jackson’s most memorable hits in a dazzling show featuring multiple costume changes.

Halloween is done and dusted for 2016. As one of the people who spent many hours volunteering my time, I am very happy we are past the finish line. I would like to congratulate the team behind the event; Kellie Barrow and her staff in the Tourism Office, the council staff that assisted with the heavy lifting, the local creatives Rhonda Collins and Ludwina Roebuck for their amazing creations, the local business owners hat got behind the event and also, the sponsors. McDonalds Lithgow, Energy Australia, Centennial Coal and Lithgow Workies. We were very happy to be able to sponsor the event as well, and seeing happy smiles on kids faces makes it all worthwhile. Now that is done, we are on the slippery slope to Christmas. Christmas hits the stores earlier and earlier these days, with every one trying to grab the shopper’s attention. I guess it is fair enough, with the online sales eating in to the sales of local retailers - they really must do something extra in order to ensure they too have a good run into the silly season. As a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a fan of shopping local, I would encourage you to try and do as much of your shopping for Christmas as you can in our local stores. With a shifting economy all around us, our retailers and local businesses need all the support we can muster. A photo my friend David Rawsthorne grabbed of me on the day... not my best side, but I was pretty knackered by this point.

Letters to the Editor The Editor, Village Voice I must say this week has been a difficult one to fathom with the Council’s decision to terminate the contract of the General Manager. As a former Councillor for nine years, a decision like this should not be made without a proper investigation. I have been silent over the past two terms of Council but as a ratepayer this decision has really troubled me. It was only the second Council meeting for some of these newly elected Councillors. After just two meetings, did they feel that they were qualified to make such a decision without a proper investigation? Is there evidence that they had any legal advice prior to the decision to sack the General Manager? Did they consider the ramifications of their decision and the cost to the ratepayers who have had year after year of rate increases? Did they all have time to examine the General Manager’s Contract with legal or HR advice? Who instigated this and rallied support for the General Manager’s Dismissal? The everyday running of any large organisation is no easy task and performance management is a key part of it. Some Councillors work for very large organisations themselves or have done in the past. I wonder if a survey was sent around to all employees in these organisations asking if they were happy with their boss, what answers would come back. The role of a General Manager is very difficult. Dealing with multiple personalities on Council is one thing but being the boss of a very large and diverse workforce and public voice of the Council is another. The General Manager should have a yearly performance review and at this time if there were any problems then they should be discussed. Has the Council been conducting Annual Reviews of the General Managers Performance? Did the Council give the General Manager the opportunity to speak on the matter prior to his dismissal? It was only last year that everyone was congratulating Roger Bailey for his contribution for Lithgow Council winning the A.R. Bluett Memorial Award. The Questions above need to be answered from the current Councillors. I believe the cost to the ratepayers could be in excess of $400,000 by the time the contract is paid out plus replacement staff and additional recruiting costs. Where is this money going to come from? Did you budget for this Councillors? I hope Councillors that you have not put a nail in our coffin for Amalgamation with Bathurst as it will be on your heads. I thank Councillors Leslie, McAndrew and Thompson for their common sense in voting against this decision. Barbara Moran
This letter is in regard to recent comments from some past and current councillors, in the media, about events relating to the dismissal of the Lithgow City Council General Manager (GM). Whilst the focus has been on the cost of replacing the GM and according to one writer, a revenge from two of the current councillors (Village Voice Issue 134), there should be consideration of the council employees, past and present, their families and friends and the impact on the wider community of the Lithgow LGA. One reader of the Village Voice penned that there were rumours ‘floating around town’ about one of the current councillors but it is also to be noted that there are rumours about Lithgow City Council staff morale especially prior to the dismissal. One important issue to address is the high attrition rate of staff at Lithgow City Council. In recent years, there have been many experienced and well respected staff who have left employment at Lithgow City Council. In addition, there had been many staff on sick leave. The costs associated with advertisement, recruitment, training of new staff along with those on leave for medical reasons are accumulative and these have not been addressed and should be factored as a

I would just like to congratulate all involved with last weekend’s Halloween festivities. What a great event. To see so many happy people at a family friendly event , which benefits the whole community is fantastic. Not only does it benefit local accommodation, food and tourism providers but it helps to showcase all that is good about the Lithgow region. The skull auction showcases the talents of the local artists and helps Lithgow Tidy Towns to beautify Lithgow’s many laneways. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the world and to have a community and Council which supports a wide range of cultural and recreational activities. We only have to look at the list of things that have been happening around the district in the last month to realise that we live in a very talented and vibrant community. In the last couple of weeks we have had a gymkhana at Rydal, the Mountain Cruzers car show, Portland Spring Fair, the fishing day at Wallerawang, the Cullen Bullen speedway, Halloween, Back to Hartley , art exhibitions and live music at the clubs. These are only the things I have heard about, there are probably many more. In the coming weeks there are a multitude of things on, including the Musical Society’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang show, open gardens at Rydal, the artist trail open weekend, Lithglo, markets and all the various Christmas activities. Anyone living in the community that can’t find something to go to must be hard to please. These events can’t happen without the support of Council, businesses which provide sponsorship and of course a multitude of dedicated and hardworking volunteers. So to all those involved in Halloween and the host of other events that showcase our wonderful region and community please know your efforts are appreciated. I look forward to many more events that help to showcase the best of Lithgow region. Rachael Young Rydal

comparison cost to replacing the GM. The smiles of relief on many council employees’ faces may be short lived especially when they hear and read comments that condone the unacceptable behaviour of some in management and thus appear trivial or dismiss the staff’s concern as an ‘excessive over-reaction’. It is hoped that current management and councillors be mindful of their words and actions. The mental health of all is important and the ratepayers and residents expect you to be ‘models’ of fair and reasonable behaviour. It is also important for the health of the Lithgow LGA to stand alone and be proud of its past, present and future. The ratepayers and residents do not want Lithgow to be displayed in the media in a negative stance. Regards Jennifer Povey Meadow Flat

$4 MILLION BOOST FOR LITHGOW AREA PUBLIC SCHOOLS Public schools in the Lithgow area will benefit from over $4 million in additional needs-based funding in 2017, a record investment made possible by the NSW Government’s signing of the Gonski agreement. “The NSW Government is delivering on its commitment to provide additional funding for schools, based on specific student needs,” Mr Toole said. “These extra resources go directly to our schools, allowing principals to better meet the unique needs of their students and the school community. “The funding will also increase employment opportunities in the Lithgow area where schools will employ additional teachers with the expertise to assist students who need extra support in key learning areas
like literacy and numeracy.” In NSW public schools, needs-based funding is distributed under the Resource Allocation Model (RAM), which uses information about student need to deliver resources where they are needed most, consistent with the Gonski recommendations. A total $4,096,652 will be distributed to schools in the Lithgow area. Schools across the Bathurst Electorate will share in a total $13,101,772 – an increase of $3,347,596 provided in 2016. Since 2014 public schools across NSW have received $504 million in extra funding, made possible by the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government signing up to the Gonski agreement.

Home alone: Seniors lost in loneliness The Magpie Whisperer Launching the 2016 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal recently, Lithgow Mayor, Cr Stephen Lesslie, said: “Many nursing home residents are without family and Christmas can be a lonely and isolated time.” Sadly, it’s not just at Christmas that many seniors experience loneliness. Spending your final years without companionship ranks among our greatest fears, but it’s the lived reality for untold elderly Australians. Society has become more individualised and social meeting places like post offices, community centres and libraries are closing. There’s been a shift to online for everything from customer services, to shopping and welfare payments, with less need for personal contact. People are moving further away from where they were born and relatives are living greater distances apart. More than half of people aged 75 and over live alone, and their main form of company is usually the television. Twenty percent of seniors have contact with relatives and friends less than once a week. For half of those the rate is less than once a month. And loneliness is a real health threat. When it comes to premature deaths, it ranks with smoking as a major risk factor. Regional communities have disproportionately more older members than urban areas. Many senior couples retire to the countryside, but when one of them dies, it leaves the surviving partner quite alone, without any family close by. If they lose the ability to drive, the isolation and distance from key services can be devastating. Everyone should have dignity and security in old age. After decades of toiling at work, retirement should be something to enjoy, not dread. As social beings, we depend on human interaction: people to listen to us, to share experiences, making life more meaningful than it otherwise would be. There are organisations that run befriending services, and charities that link young people with older people who want companionship, but maybe its time for a government-supported national scheme. Loneliness is miserable, but it’s not inevitable, and it’s a scourge we have to overcome.

All the spooky sights of Lithgow Halloween 16!! Continued from front page > Lithgow Mayor Stephen Lesslie said: “Congratulations to the businesses of Main St and the Lithgow community for helping to make this year’s Halloween event a success.” “Not only did it attract a record crowd but it boosted local business and fostered community spirit. It was marvelous to see many visitors from other areas as well.’’ Bathurst State MP Paul Toole praised the council and local businesses for supporting the event, which had grown each year. “This is fantastic. To see the effort that has gone into this by so many people. This is about putting places like Lithgow on the map. This is about making sure this is a destination for people to come along and enjoy as well.’’ Calare Federal MP Andrew Gee said: “It is the biggest Halloween event, not only west of the Great Divide but in Australia and it’s all happening right here in Lithgow.’’ “Not only did it “put Lithgow on the map’’ but gave the town a huge economic boost,” Mr Gee said. Lithgow Skulls16 The Lithgow Skulls exhibition and auction once again drew crowds of people through the doors of Lithgow Library on Saturday, proof that it has become one of the highlights of Lithgow’s Halloween celebrations. For the third year running, local artists transformed blank skulls into 58 eye-catching and thought-provoking works of art. These were auctioned off to the highest bidder on Saturday night, raising around $11,000 for Lithgow Tidy Towns Laneways Project, an ongoing arts initiative which aims to revitalise Lithgow’s laneways with public art. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the Skulls exhibition is that there seems to be no limit to the ways in which skulls can be interpreted. Skulls apparently make an irresistible canvas, with many of the same artists agreeing to take part year after year. This year saw a White Rabbit, a skull disguised as a peacock spider, and a sequel to last year’s popular Skull Mountain. Some artists chose to paint the surface with a decorative design or landscape. Others incorporated textiles, sculpted elements or found objects to create a more complicated three dimensional piece. The auction attracted skull collectors from far and wide, with one collector from Sydney buying no less than eight skulls. The highest bid went to “Ants” by Hycast Metals and sculptor Tim Johnman from Lithgow Pottery. Hycast Metals were excited to collaborate with Tim on their skull, which was cast in stainless steel. It went for $1500. Organisers would like to thank auctioneer Graham Hodson from Richardson & Wrench, and the staff at Lithgow Library Learning Centre for all their assistance. Thanks must also go to the artists, who have embraced the project so enthusiastically, and to everyone in the community who came out to support the auction or see the skulls. Whatever the attraction, it’s clear skulls are irresistible and not just to artists.

On the weekend of 16th and 17th October the parishioners of St Patrick’s Lithgow and St Vincent’s Parish Portland farewelled into retirement their Parish Priest, Fr. Mark McGuigan. Fr. Mark arrived in January 2015 as Parish Priest of both Portland and Lithgow, and has provided us with a wonderful liturgical and pastoral ministry in the Parishes, Schools, Hospitals, nursing homes and the Lithgow gaol. The Parishes gathered for the Vigil and Sunday Masses to give thanks for, and to acknowledge his, quiet, gentle, thoughtful and thorough ministry amongst us. We also gathered to give thanks for his ministry in many parishes throughout the diocese over the past 31 years. It is fitting that Fr. Mark started his ministry in this area as a Deacon and priest in 1985, and that he returned here to where he first started. A large congregation attended all farewell masses, concelebrated with the Parish Administrator, Fr. Greg Bellamy. After mass in Lithgow, Mr Jeff Larsen and Mr Sebastian Caruso thanked Fr. Mark for his Pastoral Ministry and presented him with a farewell gift on behalf of St Patrick’s Parish and then cut his farewell cake which was made and decorated by parishioner Mrs Pat Ray. After mass in Portland, Deacon Charles Applin, and St Joseph’s Principal Mrs Sue Kearns thanked Fr. Mark for his time with us, and President of the Pastoral Parish Council, Mr Charlie O’Mahony, made a small presentation on behalf
of the parish. After each mass, all present were invited to stay for light refreshments. In his reply, Fr. Mark spoke of the need to pray continually, to never lose heart, and of how people have influenced and inspired him throughout his priestly ministry: he stressed the need for gratitude for those gifts that God has bestowed upon us all throughout our lives. He thanked those who have assisted and encouraged him throughout his ministry, and taught him, through their example, how to respond to the needs of God’s people. Farewell Fr. Mark: may you have a long, healthy and happy retirement, and may the Bathurst weather be kind to you.

LITHGOW HALLOWEEN 16 Ghosts, ghouls, clowns and zombies filled the streets of Lithgow last weekend for Australia’s biggest Halloween party. It was great to see so many people getting into the spirit of the event, dressing up in some very impressive costumes. Not only did it put Lithgow on the map, but it also gave the town a huge economic boost. Pictured: Andrew with Brian and Theresa from Papadino’s Pizza
Funding Secured for Blast Furnace The grant of $545,050 was recently announced for the Lithgow Blast Furnace in a surprise visit from Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash. The funding comes under the National Stronger Regions Funding Scheme which will allow Lithgow City Council to commence a new stage in the upgrade of the facility. The unique tourist attraction is part of Lithgow’s, and in fact the country’s industrial and cultural heritage. This is a big win for the Lithgow community and the future of tourism across our region!
Carcoar Show Known by Carcoar locals as the ‘best little show in the region’, I was out at Carcoar over the weekend for the annual PA&H show. While many events such as the wood chopping and whip cracking were hotly contested, there was plenty of action in the gumleaf judging contest where the competition was so tight the Marshall's had to be called to determine which leaf was longest!

Airly PAC meeting By Mark Hoy, President - Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce
Come in & try it on today!
104 Main St Lithgow Ph: (02) 6351 4337
On Thursday 27th October 2016 Centennial Coal had their proposal “The Airly Mine Extension Project” heard by the Planning Assessment Commission. There were residents and business owners from the Capertee Valley, employees from the Airly Mine, Union officials, business representatives from both the Chamber of Commerce and the tourism sector, University Professors, environmentalists and Centennial Engineers and Project Managers. There was even a Barrister speaking on behalf for the Capertee Valley Alliance Inc. Centennial were well represented including the Mine Manager, Bob Miller, Katie Brassil, Executive General Manager External Affairs who was also heavily supportive and involved in the Springvale Colliery events of last year where 330 employees were stood down awaiting Federal approval to continue mining. Airly Mine is already an existing underground coalmine in the Western Coalfields. Centennial’s current consent allows extraction of 1.8 million tonnes per year supplying both domestic and international markets by rail. Centennials proposal includes an extensive
Environmental Impact Statement detailing the environmental outcomes Centennial technical assessment has recommended. All possible care and thought has been considered considering the area where the mine is situated in the Mugii Murum-ban State Conservation Area. There were a lot of speakers against the granting of the proposal, mainly they were people who had moved to the Capertee Valley in the last 3-10 years operating tourist businesses who believe the mine will cause the wild life to become extinct and that the Valley is going to dry up as water tables are fractured due to the mining under the State Forest. Howie Fisher representing Westfund and the Workmen’s Club summed it up when he said that he had meetings with Keith Muir (Colong Foundation For Wilderness) 30 years ago where Keith Muir stated that within 8-10 years, the area in question would be no more, there would be no wildlife to speak of and the land bare and baron. He was scathing in his comments to the people who call the Capertee Valley home when they are only relatively new to the area, their concern is for their business. They stated that they have a thriving tourism industry and that the tourism industry could sustain employment in the area rather than coal mining. The Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce spoke in favour of the development as it recognises the importance of a solid mining industry in the region as one of the main sources of employment.
Wallnuts add to their collection in Portland Only a few small showers dampened proceedings for the Annual Portland’s Wallnuts gathering last weekend. The annual gathering of traditional sign writing enthusiasts ensures that he towns collection of Signs of Yesteryear continues to grow. Organiser of the event Ron Bidwell was happy with the turn out and grateful to all the participants, many who travel from interstate to attend the event. This year attendees painted panels to repair an antique carousel that is used by the town to brighten it up and bring it back to it’s former glory. The signs are displayed on buildings in alleyways and streets around Portland and are continuing to get a reputation as a must see attraction for those visiting the area. The local CWA ladies were also on hand over the weekend to ensure that the artists were well catered for.

YOUR FIRST INVESTMENT PROPERTY
Investing in property is a fantastic wealth creation tool, and is one of the most common ways for many Australians to invest for the future. However, buying your first investment property can be a daunting experience. By Christine Dodson, R&W Lithgow
Many first-time buyers learn through hard experience the potential pitfalls of property investment, so take a moment to read this article and save yourself time, money, and stress! No Substitute for Research Property investing is relatively simple, which is why so many Australians choose it as an investment option. But only a proportion of these investors make positive returns from their properties, and only a small percentage of those make great returns. Just like building a home, buying an investment property is all about laying strong foundations early. And for that, there is no substitute for research. Australia is fantastic for property investors as highquality publicly-available data from a range of sources can give you a wealth of information about suburbs,
house prices, and even demographic data. Some fantastic resources to start your research include: www.domain.com.au,www.realestate.com. au, www.corelogic.com.au and the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census Data. It is also important to realise the difference between good research and idle browsing. Research that delivers you good results will be organised, whether that is in a dedicated notebook or a file on your computer, and it will allow you to compare areas, suburbs, and eventually properties, to find the best one for your budget and goals. Use Local Knowledge Once you have narrowed your search down the areas where you want your investment property to be, be sure to venture out and do some local research. Simply driving the streets can give you a much better “hands on” impression than just scrolling through Google Maps. And never underestimate the power of local knowledge, whether that be through the real estate agent or the local café owner, which can often give you more local information that any other source with the added bonus of a nice cappuccino to go with it! Questions like “what sort of families live in the area?”, “has it changed much over the years?”, and “are you busier than before?” are all great ways to strike up a conversation and find out about the residents, prospects, and growth of the area from those who have the most up-to-date knowledge. Look Through Once you have found a property that you like, it is important to think about the kind of person or family who might ultimately live there. This lets you “look through” the property and plan what you might need to do to make it attractive to a future tenant or buyer.
For example, if you find a four-bedroom home with a large yard ideal for a young growing family, but with no undercover car parking, your “look through” might involve investigating the cost of a carport or garage on the property to make it more appealing for them. Think About the Future Ultimately, buying an investment property is a longterm investment. Before you sign any contracts, make sure you think about the situation you might be in three, five, or ten years from now, as it will help clarify your thinking process and decision making. In addition, plan early to consult professionals like financial planners or tax advisors so you can get sound professional advice about managing your investment and tax deductions that can help you achieve the best returns. And finally, buying a property is exciting, so be sure to enjoy the process. Best of luck with your property investment journey! 7 DAY TV GUIDE Sliding Doors
Pick Of The Week Sliding Doors on ONE Southern Cross on Saturday 5th November at 8:50pm
By Kellie Evans With the Cricket back in to full swing, this is definitely one for the ladies… Ever wonder what would happen if you missed didn’t get every red light on your way home or didn’t miss the elevator taking you to work? This movie gives a really interesting insight in to how our destiny really can change in the blink of an eye! Helen (played by leading lady Gwenyth Paltrow) is having a bad day! After a terrible incident at work, Helen heads for the train only to just miss it by a seemingly split second delay. But the chaos that follows can only mean she was meant to be in the right place and the right time. I must say, this is one of my all time favourites and even if you’re not a great “Gwenyth” lover, this is still a fantastic movie with an awesome twist ending and very worthy of your Saturday night viewing.

November Colours
By Barbara Moran, Good Earth Gardening in November is always fun. The summer vegies are all growing and the seeds that I planted a few weeks ago are starting to emerge. This year we are a long way behind last year’s growth due to very late frosts and cool weather. Seasons are different year to year and although I have been lucky with not covering vegies like tomatoes a lot of people have lost their early plantings. At this time last year I had small zucchinis on my zucchini plants and large tomatoes on my tomato plants. Every year I plant magic beans with my grandchildren. When they come back to visit they are amazed at how big they have grown. Last week we planted purple climbing beans and Red Emperors. If you have not put any vegies in yet then you are definitely not too late this year but right on time. This Spring I have noticed that the weeds are out of control. The strong winds have carried seeds far and wide and the rain has encouraged the growth of the weeds. The flickweed is rampant and as soon as you try to pull it out it flicks seeds into the garden. Flick weed (Cardamine hirsute) seeds grow very fast and can
Keep up the good work during National Recycling Week November 7th to 13th 2016
germinate within five days and reach 90% germination by 13 days so in fact they can take over your garden patch very quickly. These weeds cannot be put into the compost. If you need to compost them then place them in a bucket of water for a week or so first to drown the seeds. The potatoes have grown into healthy bushes but will not be ready to harvest until the plants have flowered and died down to the ground usually three to four months after planting. If left in the ground too long then your potatoes will start to shoot so I generally harvest them when the plant dies down. It is important to mulch thickly around potato plants to retain moisture and protect the tubers from light. Potatoes exposed to light turn green and develop a toxic substance. In the berry patch the currants have fruit already and the raspberries, boysenberries and young berries are in flower. If you have a spot for some blueberries you will need to purchase two different varieties for pollination. Blueberries do require planting in an acid soil or if putting them in a trough or pot you can use an Azalea or Rhododendron potting mix.
ALL YOUR GARDENING AND LANDSCAPING NEEDS!
In the last 2015/16 financial year residents of Lithgow City Council have recycled over 1600 tonnes of recyclable materials Reducing waste is important for protecting the environment. The simplest and easiest way to reduce waste is to recycle. Recycling ensures the reduction in general waste entering landfills unnecessarily. By recycling we are reducing the amount of raw material taken from the earth and processed to make a new product. This saves resources and energy by recycling what has already been made. Recycling is easy and great for the environment, for every kilogram of cardboard recycled, you’re saving up to one kilogram of greenhouse gases! Recycling can help reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill and also prevent the wasting of valuable resources. I urge all residence to consider what they are placing in their Red lidded bin, is it recyclable?
If you have already done so your roses should be fed up with some organic compost, screened cow manure or pelleted Rose Food. Flowering at the moment are the beautiful Osteospermum, Dutch Iris, Petunias, Daphne, Waratahs, Marigolds, Violas, Armeria, Tree Peonies and starting to bud up are the Salvias. New on the scene this year is a Deep Purple Petunia with White splashes called Petunia Night Sky it will be perfect for pots or garden beds. Whether you love or hate it each flower has different markings making it a standout feature in the garden. Barbara Moran is a long time team member of GoodEarth Nursery at Lidsdale. She has an extensive knowledge and experience of both exotic and native gardens.

Christmas and Beyond Luncheon Christmas Day Lunch: 9:30am till 3:00pm Where: Lithgow Bible Church Hall, 1 Col Drewe Drive, South Bowenfels, adjacent to the Lithgow Hospital Do you find at this time of year, that you begin to feel a little left behind as people prepare to spend a day of gift giving with family and friends. You may find yourself without family or friends, or feel unable to meet the expectations that are being placed upon you to join in with those around you. In that case, Christmas may already be sorted for you. For the past 13 years Christmas and Beyond has been hosting for all that wish to attend a lunch to celebrate Christmas. If you would like to come then you are welcome to join us. It will be held at the Lithgow Bible Church Hall, 1 Col Drewe Drive, South Bowenfels,
16
adjacent to the Lithgow Hospital, starting at 9:30 with an extended morning tea. The Lithgow community support Christmas and Beyond, and we cannot thank enough those people and groups that continue to allow lives to be positively touched in this way. Companies and groups that generously support us are The Lithgow Workmen’s Club, L.J.Hooker, Energy Australia, Westfund, Lithgow Lions, plus many individuals. Christmas and Beyond also needs people to help run the day. Much of the work involved is done before the date. We need people to help set up the hall on Friday
the 23rd Dec. starting at 3:00pm, and also people to serve and cleanup on Christmas day, from 9:00 am till 4:00pm. Do not feel you need to commit to the entire day to help. Christmas and Beyond appreciate whatever time you wish to gift us. Perhaps one gift you could give the community this year is yourself.
For further information you can contact Craig Rayner on 0456 560018, email craig@ craigrayner.com or write to Christmas and Beyond 39 Wrights Road Lithgow 2790.

Four western NSW towns were successful in gaining grants in the last two years, with the Twin Towns Tottenham Tullamore winning the first Challenge in 2015. First prize is an extra $5,000 to spend on improving the healthy living environment. Wellington also had healthy living activities in 2015 and this year Cowra and Warren both ran major projects in their towns, with great results. Projects need to include referring people to the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service, which provides free telephone health coaching over six months. To apply for funding, towns must have a population of between 1,000 and 15,000 people. Smaller villages can combine to reach the 1,000 minimum. Towns who have received a grant before cannot apply again. Projects could include community weight loss efforts, walking events, healthy cooking classes, vegetable workshops, giving pedometers to local residents or any original healthy living idea a town can think of. Strong partnerships between health workers, community groups and local businesses need to be outlined in the application, to produce long term benefits. Funding is provided by the NSW Office of Preventive Health and Heart Foundation (NSW). Support is available from Sydney as well as locally from Health Promotion Officers with Western NSW Local Health District by emailing WNSWLHD-HealthPromotion@ health.nsw.gov.au for writing your application and implementing your project. If your town is big on community initiatives and has a group of people with time, passion and skills to get an application in by the closing date of 14 November, check out the Application Form at www.preventivehealth. net.au. The website also has a Healthy Town Challenge summary fact sheet and brochure for the eligibility criteria, application process, winner selection criteria and a list of the available support for successful towns. There is also a link to a very useful resource called Creating Heart Healthy Towns, from the Heart Foundation, which has lots of ideas in it. Don’t miss this opportunity to get funding to help make your community healthier.

Landcare and Local Land Services are working together to hold a community planting day at the Vale of Clwydd on Saturday 12 November 2016. Our creeks are essential in providing habitat and corridors for our birds and wildlife - they also can help to make it nice place for people to live! The Vale of Clwydd Community Planting Day has become an annual event. This year we aim to plant 500 native plants to improve bank stability, downstream water quality and habitat for native plants and animals. Our objective is to replace the weeds infesting the area with a mix of native wetland species. The community planting day is supported by Lithgow Oberon Landcare Association, Lithgow City Council and Central Tablelands Local Land Services. All community members are invited to come along to show we care about our local creek and to plant some native plants followed by a sausage sizzle lunch.
