Who knew buying a ‘boarding house’ for elderly people would inspire a senior travel company crossing all continents, running hundreds of tours annually and creating memories for thousands of Western Australians over 55? My parents Jim and Jane Cummins purchased Villa Carlotta Hotel (now Ithaca Manor) in 1979 and in 1985 began connecting people from the Australind train in Bunbury to Busselton, offering lovely accommodation, great food and an abundance of warm, honest hospitality. We introduced them to the delights of the beautiful South West, inspired people to share unique and fascinating stories and created a large fun filled family. From the moment I started tour leading and cooking for guests in 1992, I knew many more fantastic years of laughter, friendships and most importantly holidays were yet to come. The more our wonderful travellers suggested new holiday destinations, the more our tours grew. Having started by exploring the South West and staying at Villa Carlotta, we quickly began connecting our loyal customers to Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, Northern Territory, South Australia, ACT and Queensland on Villa Carlotta Tours. Before we knew it, we were off to Singapore, then Europe, China, Canada and the rest of the world! Having handed much of the everyday order of things over to our now Managing Director Matt Walker, I am honoured to say Villa Carlotta Travel continues to be locally based in Busselton and still owned by myself and Matt and his family in 2022. I’ve been involved in many aspects of Villa Carlotta Travel throughout the years, from cooking lunches to renovating guest suites, however my favourite part has always been meeting and

I’m forever grateful for all the excellent stories, wisdom, humour and joy each and every one of you who have travelled with Villa over the last 30 years bring to my life. Just for Singles holidays are for solo travellers. These tours are a fantastic way to travel with like-minded travellers in safety and comfort. Choose to travel by yourself, bring a friend or we can assist you in finding a travelling companion to share a room.

Discovery holidays are for more active adventurers.

Discovery holidays cater for the more adventurous, active and culturally inquisitive travellers who are looking to get off the beaten track. These tour groups range in size from 10 to 20 guests.

Holiday Your Way is for the independent traveller.

A guide to which tours may suit you

With such a diverse collection of travel options at Villa, we want to ensure you choose the right holiday for you. The foot icons next to a tour in this magazine provide a guide to the required fitness level for each Villa holiday.

Relaxed

Suitable for travellers with low mobility. You will be required to embark/disembark coaches, trains and other transport via steps unaided. You must be able to carry your own luggage and walk short distances. Stairs may need to be negotiated at times. Travellers with walking aids (sticks and walkers) are welcome and those requiring accompanying assistance and/or carer may consider these holidays.

Moderate

Required to walk confidently and unaided. Expect guided walking tours of attractions with occasional inclines and stair climbs, some long days and multiple hotel changes during the holiday. Your accommodation may require access via stairs, a short walk to reach hotel facilities and have showers over baths.

Active

Requires some fitness. Involves longer days filled with activities, excursions requiring standing and walking for extended periods of time and nature-based activities. You will be required to walk confidently over uneven ground and surfaces at a timely pace.

Highly Active

Requires good general fitness. Excursions will be over more difficult terrain and require a certain level of agility. You will be required to walk confidently for up to three hours over uneven surfaces including soft sand, rocks and creek crossings. Some itineraries will explore remote locations.

Challenging

A high level of fitness is required. Tours have an emphasis on active pursuits and often explore remote locations which are challenging to access. You will be required to walk confidently for up to six or more hours per day and have experience in outdoor pursuits.

Day 5. Parkes to Cowra Today we bid farewell to Parkes and visit the quaint town of Grenfell, the birthplace of Henry Lawson. Admire the truly marvellous Silo Art then wander through the stunning heritage listed Iandra Castle and Mount Oriel homestead. A unique part of Australia’s heritage, it was built in 1911 and was the home of George Henry Greene, local landowner, grazier, and politician, after whom nearby Greenethorpe is named. This afternoon we travel to the Cowra Japanese Garden, the largest in the southern hemisphere. The garden was built to honour the 231 Japanese soldiers who broke out of the local prison camp in 1944, died in the escape and were buried nearby. Overnight: CountryMan Motor Inn, Cowra (BD)

Join us on a six-day interstate adventure this November to discover iconic destinations along the Sapphire Coast before heading to the Kosciuszko National Park and Thredbo Village. Day 1. Perth to Canberra

Day 2. Canberra to Bega

This morning we travel to the historic town of Braidwood, where a guide from the local historical society will show us the impressive heritage buildings of this former gold mining town in southern New South Wales. Following a visit to the Braidwood Museum, we visit the quaint heritage town of Mogo to browse the craft shops and enjoy lunch at leisure before making our way to the pretty National Trust village of Tilba to visit the local boutique cheese factory. Then take the scenic Wallaga Lake Tourist Drive inland to Cobargo before arriving in Bega – the cheese-making capital of Australia. Overnight: Bega Village Motor Inn, Bega (BD)

Day 3. Sapphire Coast

Today we make the short journey to the beautiful seaside town of Tathra, where we visit the Heritage Listed wharf, which houses a museum and café, before taking the Sapphire Coast Road to see the pretty coastal villages of Merimbula and Pambula. Next the famous Wheeler’s Oyster Farm for a tour of this wonderful producer of prized Sydney Rock Oysters, before heading to Eden for lunch at leisure and free time. This afternoon we visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum before embarking on a cruise through Twofold Bay to see the beautiful coastline and majestic marine life including humpback whales, dolphins and seals. Overnight: Bega Village Motor Inn, Bega (BD)

Day 4. Bega Valley

Our first stop of the day is the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre to sample world-famous cheese and learn about the history of dairy farming and cheese making in the Bega Valley. Then the Bemboka Pie Shop for a delicious morning tea before heading to Cooma for lunch and the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre. After learning about the iconic Snowy Scheme we travel to Jindabyne, where there will be free time for shopping or walking along the lake. Overnight: Lake Jindabyne Hotel, Jindabyne (BD)

Day 5. Kosciuszko National Park

Today’s touring will start with a visit to the Snowy Mountains Visitor Centre to learn about the Kosciuszko National Park’s fascinating history and wildlife and browse the gallery’s art exhibition. Our next stop is Jindabyne’s Gaden Trout Hatchery for a guided tour before heading to Thredbo Village for the spectacular Kosciuszko Express Chairlift ride to Australia’s highest restaurant, Eagles Nest. Enjoy lunch at leisure and a short walk on the main range before returning to Thredbo Village in the afternoon for an interesting presentation at the Thredbo Alpine Museum, followed by a visit to Wild Brumby for a schnapps tasting. Overnight: Lake Jindabyne Hotel, Jindabyne (BD)
