30 YEAR TIME LINE 1985-2015 1985 ACME Studios was founded by Adrian Olabuenaga and his wife Lesley Bailey. The first project was a Limited Edition jewelry collection named “Melrose Emblematic”, consisting of twelve brooches designed by California artist and Memphis Designer, Peter Shire.

1986 With the help of Designer/Architect Ettore Sottsass and writer Barbara Radice,ACME organized “Memphis Designers for ACME”, a collection of over 100 designs by Andrea Branzi, Aldo Cibic, Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Ettore Sottsass, Marco Zanini, and others. Mr. Sottsass suggests that designs by Adrian must also be included.

ACME is the first American company that Ettore Sottsass ever designed for. The collection debuted at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in 1986, alongside the MEMPHIS MILANO touring show. ACME was the first and only company to work with all 14 Memphis designers Many pieces from this collection can be found in the permanent collections of museums around the world, including The Houston Museum of Fine Art, The Brooklyn Museum, Frankfurt Museum of Decorative Arts and the entire series holds a place in the permanent collection of The Groninger Museum in The Netherlands. This collection would dramatically change the jewelry industry the same way the Memphis Group’s furniture changed the design world. The “Atomic” necklace from this collection wins the

Award in Germany.

“Architects for ACME” jewelry collection is released, including designs by Richard Meier, Alessandro Mendini, Alberto Olabuenaga, Cesar Pelli, Aldo Rossi, Laurinda Spear, Robert AM Stern and Stanley Tigerman. Phillip Johnson was the first to be contacted, who declined to design jewelry, but offered to get the other architects involved and volunteers to also curate the entire collection.

05

30 YEAR TIME LINE 1985-2015 1986 continued “Alchimia for ACME” was organized with the collaboration of Milanese Architect Alessandro Mendini. “Artists for ACME” was formed with the assistance of noted California artist Billy Al Bengston. Represented in this collection are Mr. Bengston, Chuck Arnoldi, Kenneth Price, Laddie John Dill and Ronnie Cutrone. 1987 “ACME Collection” done by leading graphic artists, mostly from California, including Rod Dyer, Jim Heimann, April Greiman, Mick Haggerty and many others.

“Hispanic Artists for ACME,” was organized, which included Carlos Almaraz, Frank Romero, Robert Gil De Montes, and others. “New Pop Series”, featuring artists Robert Williams, Georgeanne Deen and Neon Park. “DEVO for ACME” by singer Mark Mothersbaugh and bassist Gerry Casale is released. “Collezione Bolido” by Italian Designer Massimo Iosa-Ghini is released. 1988 ACME relocates to Maui, Hawaii Ettore Sottsass is commissioned to design a 1.5 acre ACME compound in Maui, to include a house, warehouse and offices. He visits Maui for the first time.

Bob Kane, the creator of BATMAN, develops a collection of jewelry exclusively for ACME named “ACME Superheroes” “ACME Classics”, ACME’s first collection of sterling silver is released. 1992 A large project by MC Escher is released. 1994 “Keith Haring Collection” done with Special Editions Limited is released. A 20+ year relationship with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation begins.

06

30 YEAR TIME LINE 1985-2015 1995 “Andy Warhol Collection” is released.

Adrian introduces the Andy Warhol Foundation to the Campbell’s Soup Company who had never communicated before and they begin a partnership that remains active to this day. 1996 WRITING TOOLS was a new product category for ACME to explore that began in 1996. In 1991, Ettore Sottsass and other designers formed a company named Giotto, with the purpose of manufacturing Italian design in Asia. The products never made it past the prototype and sampling stage and were never released. When the company folded in 1996, ACME bought the company’s stock. Many of these objects are now in the permanent collections of several museums (Pompidou Centre, Paris, Denver Art Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art) and coveted by collectors. 1997 The first collection of WRITING TOOLS is released and included designs by Frank Lloyd Wright, Piet Mondrian, Michael Graves, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and others. ACME was the first company to specialize in producing pens printed with designs by world-class designers, architects, artists and works from museums, starting a revolution in the pen industry, resulting in endless new possibilities for designs in this area. This focus into writing and related accessories fundamentally changed the company and made it into an international brand and quickly acquires distribution in 46 countries. ACME completes its largest single undertaking to date, CASA MAUI, a house designed for Adrian and Lesley by Ettore Sottsass, this house which is just one part of the ACME compound, in Maui, Hawaii.

1999 A 25+ year relationship with The Eames Office begins. 2000 ACME develops several new pen making techniques, which allows the designer to create new shapes using these new pen making technologies, resulting in “Collezione Materiali” (which means “Materials Collection”).

07

30 YEAR TIME LINE 1985-2015 2000 continued ACME releases “The Americana Collection” which includes, Monopoly, Roy Rogers, Pez, Elvis Presley and others. Architect Shigeru Ban designs the “Scale” pen, when released it wins two awards.

2006 ACME’s warehouse is completed, the design by Mr. Sottsass, interior layout and design by Adrian.. 2007 The first ACME Flagship Store opens in Tokyo, Japan. 2009 ACME’s first airport store opens at the Fukuoka Airport in Japan. ACME is nominated for a National Design Award in Corporate Achievement by the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum NOMINEE

“Phase 3” pen collection is released which uses a new shape designed by Massimo Vignelli. ACME rolled out its first “green offering”: The 100% biodegradable EcoPen. 2010 A new pen making technique is developed: Etched Pens, which is a completely new direction for ACME. A Limited Edition pen done with “Buzz” Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Moon landing!

ACME is again nominated by the Cooper Hewitt, but this time in 2 categories (Product Design and Corporate Achievement). NOMINEE

The entire collection is accepted into the permanent collection of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. 2012 Working with the Bram Stoker Estate, ACME launches a limited-edition “DRACULA” pen set commemorating the 100th anniversary of Bram Stoker’s death. ACME’S Mexico City Flagship Store opens. ACME wins the Japanese 2013 ACME develops the “4FP”, the world’s thinnest 4 Function Pen in 2011, only to improve on it in 2013, by making it the “7FP”, the world’s thinnest 7 Function Pen. “Hatch” is released, the world’s first antimicrobial pen and wins the Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

FRIDA KAHLO DE RIVERA, (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter who is best known for her self-portraits. Kahlo’s life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition are important in her work, which has been sometimes characterized as naïve art or folk art. Kahlo had a volatile marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems, many caused by a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people, and this isolation influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another.

LE CORBUSIER, born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris in 1887 in Switzerland, was an architect, designer, urbanist, and writer, famous for being one of the pioneers of what is now called modern architecture. His career spanned five decades, with his buildings constructed throughout Europe, India, Japan and America. He was a pioneer in studies of modern high design and was dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities. In 1918, Le Corbusier met the Cubist painter Amédée Ozenfant. Rejecting Cubism as irrational and “romantic”, the pair jointly published their manifesto, ‘Après le cubisme’ and established a new artistic movement, Purism. They established the Purist journal ‘L’Esprit nouveau’. It was Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye (1929–1931) that most succinctly summed up his five points of architecture that he had elucidated in ’L’Esprit Nouveau’ and his book ‘Vers une architecture’. By 1927, Le Corbusier was among the world’s leading practitioners of the New Architecture. He collaborated with Charlotte Perriand on furniture – including the LC4 – which is still an icon of modern design. Around 1942, he formulated his “Modulor” theory to facilitate architecture on a human scale. In the 1950s, an opportunity to translate the Radiant City on a large scale occurred in the construction of the Union Territory Chandigarh and the first planned city in India. In 1952, the first ‘Unité d’Habitation’ was completed in Marseille, followed by further modular residential units and the pilgrimage chapel at Ronchamps in 1955 – He died in 1965 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France. © 2015 FLC/ARTEUM

THE FIRST ONE

The “HATCH” pen was designed to take advantage of the innate properties of brass, and its remarkable ability to self sterilize. Within a few hours of contact with brass ions, any bacteria or microorganism dies. While this effect is not new and the concept is centuries old, we don’t currently utilize the material’s enormous potential. This antiseptic quality lends itself perfectly to situations where hygiene is a priority, including the medical profession. To further highlight the unique qualities and benefits of using this type of tool, the etched graphics relay some of the story or the reasoning behind it. The hatched pattern is an abstraction of cell structure. The gradient of hatch variation can be symbolic of growth or infection, but overall it demonstrates organic change. In addition to its scientific appearance, the hatch pattern and random layout are also representative of a patchwork quilt. In this way, the graphic demonstrates the function of the brass material by stopping infection at a cellular level, while it also appears comforting and safe like a sewn heirloom blanket.

Name: “HATCH” - 2013 Design: Karl Zahn Style #: P5KZ01R - Etched Roller Ball Pen Material: Acid etched brass

PLEASE NOTE: Although this pen is intended to take full advantage of the antimicrobial properties of raw brass, it comes with a thin coating of clear lacquer. This coating is applied to give the consumer a new and polished pen. However, this coating will slowly wear away over time, exposing the raw brass and its properties. The clear coating can also be removed quickly by using a cloth with a solvent like lacquer thinner, but do not soak the pen in any solvent.

THE 2ND ONE

When approaching this project I asked myself: “How could I possibly transform a boring black pen into something precious and desirable?” The idea was to simply dip the pen into liquid gold. But by doing so, one has to hold the pen on one end, which is why the gold doesn’t cover its entire surface. The final design, rather than being another golden status symbol, literally represents the action of transformation, if not to say the alchemy.

The acrylic display is also not designed for those unusual shapes. Requirements for orders to get an acrylic display at no charge: The order must be 12 different styles. We suggest 2 per style. Changes or adjustments of quantities per style are ok, as long as the total order is at least 24 pens.
