Through our project, we want to challenge the stack and the associations that it has pertaining to the hotel typology. Hotels typically include a standard stack rising up, with little to no variation throughout. We want to find a way to introduce differences in it through the use of a module system, as well as by layering separate systems of massing overtop one another. The modules allow for a new kind of spatial experience to open up between floors in the stack, while also creating a continuity and connection that is otherwise forgotten in hotels. The maneuver of “shifting” aids in breaking up the interior spaces by creating forms that move apart from each other, leading to openings and intersections. Through the utilization of these conditions, an interior environment comparable to a city street is formed.

Rock House

Spring 2021

This project will investigate the relationship between a simple architectural form and an action which creates a transformation or deformation of that form. Students are asked to think about their projects as dynamic systems wherein each part and its various perturbations bear responsibility to the alignment and definition of the whole. Students are also asked to consider how deformations in a ideal system may be taken advantage of to organize a sequence of movement through the structure, or to sort out differences related to front/ back; public/ private; interior/ exterior; etc. Students are asked to be extremely economical in the moves they perform that are not directly sponsored by the idea of the verb.

Bakery Lighting Design

Autumn 2019

This studio primarily explores the use of lighting. I chose the ceiling recessed light as the main fixture, the 5000K color temperature of the light will make the whole space looks bright and people could see more clear of the color of the cake. The liner light will be used under the display counter, to increase the ambiance of the display area. Different types of pendants lights will be used in a different section of the bakery to increase the overall atmosphere of the space.

Capsule Tower

Team: Ali Ahmed, Daqi Bao

Autumn 2023

Our studio primarily focuses on exploring potential forms of future architecture. Our project is a women’s hospital, and based on the size of the program, we have incorporated four different-sized openings into the building envelope, arranged in a relatively random manner. As the number of users increases, the building can accommodate additional spatial capsules inserted within its structure. The central portion of the building serves as a circulation hub, featuring a vertical parking facility, stairs, and elevators.
