// H O O M / ? “Architecture is not a private affair; even a house must serve a whole family and its friends, and most buildings are used by everybody, people of all walks of life. If a building is to meet the needs of all the people, the architect must look for some common ground of understanding and experience.” - John Portman This Portfolio contains the ideas and designs that showcase my main design philosohpy in architecture.

PAON BUMI Location Jl. Ir Sutami, Gianyar, Bali Project Area 6540 sqm Function Educational Tourism Status Personal project Final Project SAA XLIX SAA AWARD Tools Used Archicad Sketchup Photoshop Lumion Food is not only one of the central needs for humanity, but it also plays a huge role in environmental sustainability. The current food crisis threatens the livelyhood of humans and the planets current environmental state. About 24% of carbon emission are resulted from the world’s food industry. More than 2 times the resulting carbon emissions created by vehicles. Without realizing it, the diet and nutrition of our surrounding communities greatly contributes to the level of world carbon emissions. Indonesia being the 4th most populated county is not excluded from this global environmental issue. The theme of this design is Paon Bumi, or earth’s kitchen. The concept that brings visitors to interact directly with nature, which is the source of our food, this connection bridges the relationship from the seeds planted to the dishes on the plate. The design philosophy based on an appreciation of nature and a desire to maintain it itself is rooted and very prominent in Balinese culture, especially in the Balinese heritage agricultural system, namely ‘Subak’ which adheres to the local philosophy and belief, namely (Tri Hita Karana), to respect back nature that has given so much to mankind.

Nature plays an important role in the designs concept. the growth of crops and farms relies and adapts corresponding to the seasons, therefore the design also adapts and benefits from the beauty of Bali’s changing seasons. This concept of making the rice paddy not only as a central activity but as the center of the site creates an everchanging design centerpiece that is unique to its current date and time. from the raining season to the harvesting season the design is always interesting to revisit.

BALE BALING

Location Kemayoran, South Jakarta Project Area 21.000 sqm Function Low Rise Apartment Status 2nd Place, Lixil American standard, Team of 3 Tools Used Archicad Sketchup Photoshop Lumion The Typology of apartment buildings in general tends to be static and monotonous, that monotony is inadequate for the life of urban people who are always moving around dynamically. The Design is an architectural idea that tries to present and express the dynamic life of a society that is always changing and developing throughout time. The abstraction of the basic design idea originates from the everevolving flexibility and spirit of architecture, so that the building becomes the hope of a residential complex that is open, functional and adaptable to the needs of residents and the surrounding community. This is seen and manifested through a design with a sustainable, playful and dynamic spatial experience. The results of the materialized composition are expected to become a prototype for a Sustainable community activity center in the middle of the city to live in, do activities and play. The mass of the tower that rotates in an axis and is arranged diagonally to respond to the sun’s glare in the east and south winds results in various lighting and shading in one building. The facade consists of pivoting planes that help in dealing with tropical climates. The passive and active pivots provide flexibility with adapting the suns glare, rain and wind according to the functions and needs of different occupants.

Dépé-dépé, in Sundanese, means embracing an attitude based on respect for one and another. The concept of this mutual respect is realized in the co-housing environment of Kampung Nata Lembur in the form of a communal space that can accommodate the interactions of the residents. the design acts ass the “gate” of Kampung Nata Lembur, the Mosque and Bale Wargi welcome visitors from outside the village as well as the village communit . As both roofs tilts down to respect the surrounding mountains, the body of the mosque faces toward the Qibla and the open space. The open space between the two buildings is used as an activity area for the comunity. This concept of respect is integrated in the basic form of the buildings. Therefore, the mosque room, bale, and field are oriented to connect with one another and become an extension of one another, just as the field can become an extension of the mosque during tarawih prayers.

Vincentius Jason Lim AXONOMETRY

Design plan A3-00

The basic structural system of the mosque consists of a red brick concrete structure on the enclosure of the mosque and a concretewooden structure for the roof of the mosque.

The wall of the mosque consists of two layers that cross, layers of concrete brick walls inside and layers of oblique red brick walls. At the intersection of the two walls, a column is placed to remove the column at the end of the roof creating a floating roof effect.

The security of the mosque is always guaranteed with sliding doors on all sides, but because of the open terraces, the building does not feel tight.

The covering expression of the mosque is inspired from the red brick walls found in the village houses, then it is combined with the red roster. The red brick walls are combined with the concrete brick walls that cross them. The roofs of the mosque and the Bale are in the form of asymmetrical shields facing each other, and bowing to one another. The cavity between the wall and the wall combined with the rosters create good air circulation in the mosque.

Architecture Portfolio

Hamilton Mausoleum is one of the few remaining buildings of the historical Hamilton Palace Complex. Throughout its’ existence, it witnessed the demolition of its’ nearby neighbour, the Hamilton Palace, and the soon to be repurposed grounds . All that’s left is the empty halls and its echoing spaces; amplifying and reverberating every sound that is made inside its walls .The whispering sounds of the past and the present are heard by every visitor that came to its lonely, deteriorating walls. The chapel, the crypt, and the lodge were separated in space, but due to the whispering walls, they are tethered together through resonance.

32

The Hamilton Mausoleum in unique and famous for its reverberating chapel walls creating long and howling echoes. Therefore the design elongates the mausoleum by bringing its resonating interior spaces into the outdoors and creates a recreational setting to the former funerary. The encircling pathway gives visitors a different perspective towards the mausoleum, from above as the living and from beneath as the deceased. Both spaces tether at the resonating divots that connect the spaces The hopes and dreams reimagined by readapting the mausoleum as an interpretation center that can shift itself for future functions.

Resonating Divots

Abstraction of Reverberation

The tethering of spaces above and beneath through resonating divots symbolize the relation of the past and the present of the mausoleum. The coal mining of the past, in some ways, contributed to the demolition of the Hamilton Palace, and could repeat in other ways towards the mausoleum. It acts as a reminder of preserving architectural heritage for sake of the town’s identity later on.

BUNDA

Location Kerep, Ambarawa Project Area 5.695 sqm Function Marian Centre Status Design Proposal, Marian Centre 2020, Team of 5 Tools Used Archicad Sketchup Photoshop Lumion The concept of this building complex design represents the idea of “Bunda” as a figure of a graceful and kind yet strong woman. Bunda refers to the word ‘Mother’ which instinctively describes the idea ‘Love’. In the Catholic Church, Mary is the mother of all the faithful and the Mother of Jesus Christ the Savior. The design idea describes the nature of Mother’s love, namely the arrangement that flows like a cloth / scarf that covers a child when born. This cloth then becomes a symbol and as a place of good shelter. Mother Mary lovingly embraces and protects humanity just as Mary embraced the Son of God. The building and its environment take on a dynamic circular shape depicting Mother’s gentle and loving nature. Her motherhood for Jesus Christ is not just a means, opportunity, or means or access, but an eternal service that has been realized under her faith and dedication to God. The shape of the building describes a concept of gratitude and ‘eling’ inherent in local traditions such as tumpeng or gunungan. The concept of a cone-shaped gunungan symbolizes human life. The higher the knowledge and the older the human, the more conical (golong gilig) the soul, taste, creativity, intention, and work in our lives are getting closer to the Creator. This concept is also reinforced by the soft light penetrating into space in the main building and galery.

LIKU LIKU Location Pondong Baru, Kalimantan Project Area 10.701,11 sqm Function Aloen Aloen Status Top 5 nominee, Satu Ruang 2020, Team of 3 Tools Used Archicad Sketchup Photoshop Lumion Kalimantan Island is one of the lungs of the world with its forests that have existed for centuries. Now with the construction of a new capital city to Kalimantan Island means moving the center of the country which could threaten the preservation of Kalimantan’s forests. The lack of well-designed public spaces has an impact on the quality of community interaction, especially the surrounding communities. The existence of a new capital city development plan has the potential to also bring new more interactive public facilities to the community. The lack of community engaging public spaces speaks volumes to the current state of city design in Indonesia. Most public parks are created for monumental satisfaction without a sense of belonging to the communities around it. From these phenomena, the conclusion is drawn that the public space of the alun-alun must draw a common thread from the local and national Indonesian society so that it becomes an inclusive gathering point. The design strategy starts from the essence of the square which is a gathering space, thus creating cross-cultural interactions and has the potential to be a play space for all circles.
