Polk Audio ws-001 The objective for these speaker designs is to identifying the differences in cost when designing for high volume and low volume production. This can be done through different material selections, manufacturing processes, and parts sources.
CAD
Low Volume When designing for high volume, there are more choices in materials and manufacturing processes. In high volume production, the biggest drop off in price is when 1000 units is reached. As the number units increases, the cost steadily drops. But the “sweet spot would be from 1,000 units to 100,000 units.

High Volume Designing for a low volume product is challenging due to material and manufacturing constraints. There are also fewer parts to speed up production Within low volume production, the biggest drop off in price is when 100 units is reached. As the number units increases, the cost steadily drops. But the “sweet spot would be from 100 - 500 units.

Low Volume When designing with less material variety and manufacturing processes, it is important to never forget about draft angles. Ideally, when designing a high volume product, choosing the right manufacturing process and the right materials is very crucial.

dj Hiro Hiro is a up and coming electronic dance music DJ from the busy city of Tokyo. Hiro has just finished his first music tour throughout Japan and Europe. He has a minor case of Tinnitus and is noticing that it is becoming worse. He is seeking a ear protection product that is portable, convenient, easy to use, and of course it has it be cool.
Gets lost Tangled wires Too big to pack Uncomfortable
Problem Hiro is very busy, and does not have many days off. When he does, he uses them to relax and unwind. However, Tokyo is a very busy city with a population of over 13 million. It is difficult for him to escape the noisy environments. HIro does utilizes ear protection products, however, they are inconvenient and are a hassle to take everywhere he travels.
Searching for Hiro Our group gathered images that depicted Hiro’s interests, fashion, values, and lifestyle. This process aided us to have a better understanding of Hiro.

The mobile application connects with Eapeace using wireless bluetooth technology. It allows the user to activate music, white noise, and active noise cancellation mode.
Stylish Earpeace’s charging case can be worn as a necklace and is always there when you need it. When out of batteries, the earbuds can be placed back into the charger.
Medi-case The Med- Case is a case for the Apple iphone 6. It is a new way to store meds by combining it with smartphone technology. The backside of the case smoothly pulls out where 24 pills can be safely stored. The design of the case is to make it look slim, sleek, and discrete.

Design Direction For this product, the functional aspect directly correlates with the aesthetics. The slide out method of use is the ideal solution to make medication easily accessable, as well as make the case look as slim and inconspicuous as possible.
Mobile App
A mobile application allows for the user to set reminders for each medication they need to take throughout the day. They are also able to contact their doctor or pharmacies directly. This allows the doctor to view what medication they are on, and for fast and easy refills from their pharmacy.
Unnoticable Medi-case’s design is sleek and low-key making the user feel more comfortable utilizing it as a phone case, and as a medication holder without being noticed.
Capas
Working with Simple Limb Initiative, and Mahavir Kmina, our group sucessfully designed a fully functional transfumeral prosthesis for children between 6-8 years old.
Link to our project video https://vimeo.com/122270636
Problem
Due to land mines, snake bites, and vehicle accidents, there are over 20,000 amputees living in Colombia, many whom are children. In most cases amputee kids can’t go to school, youths can’t engage in higher education, and they can’t participate in cultural or social activities. The rest of the family is also affected, In most cases Colombian amputees can’t afford the cost of the prosthesis.
Objective Woking with Simple Limb Initiative, and Mahavir Kmina to design a prosthetic leg for amputee children of Colombia utilizing inexpensive materials that can be found local in Colombia, all for under $30.
Ideation
Through a series of sketches, we were able to understand the basic necessary functions of a prosthetic leg. It is crucial that articulation in the knee and ankle correlate with the natrual human Gait cycle.
Functional Prototypes In order to move forward with our concepts, we produced functional prototypes utilzing acrylic and plywood. A laser cutter was used to cut out parts, and hardware was used to brace them together. We were very intrigued by the idea of having a flat pack prosthesis, and worked hard to make sure that it would be structually sound, robust, and adjustable.
Prototype Testing Utilizing straps, 3/4 and popular wood, we designed a supporting rig to test our prototypes. Being able to test our prototypes gave us a lot of information about areas that needed improvement such as, lateral support, and ankle and knee stability.
Capas
Our final design was made to be unobtrusive to the user as well as the user. We added fairings made of plywood that tie in Colombia’s culture without screaming Colombian. The final materials that were used are, HDPE, polyurethane, and 3D printed PLA links and heel.
