MY

EXPECTATIONS My experience in going to live, and work in Malta.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the island from above is just how amazing and beautiful it looked. When the plane boarded and I walked trough the door I was presently surprised at how sunny it was, when I left the Netherlands it was cold and raining. We drove to my apartment and on the way I already noticed how busy it was here in Malta especially the traffic! We came to my apartment she dropped me of and I was going to explore. I walked in the apartment just to notice that I was the only one there for the time being, which was pretty nice because I could check out every corner of the apartment. The only sad part is that I had the smallest room of the whole apartment there really was a significant difference.

INTRO

When I first came here I was actually pretty nervous I’ve never bin on a plane before or even lift on my own. I was expecting it to be like a paradise island, Sunny everyday beaches everywhere and lovely nature. Most of that was true the weather was nice so were the beaches but it is just really crowded.

But why did I choose to go the most tropical place, from the options I had. Well as you just read it wasn’t really a hard choose for me, I could choose between Germany, England, Belgium, and a few others. All country’s I’ve been through before. And I thought this one would be the most different from my usual environment. I love the sun the beach and nature so yeah that is mostly why I choose Malta.

COMPANY

The company, which I got assigned to, was a small creative marketing company, they only had 1 designer at the time before i joined but they have a intern or 2 most of the time. They are really good in giving a company the right material to be successful here in Malta, and i really liked it there. They focus on delivering promotional and visibility campaigns that engage and motivate consumers, resulting in direct consumer action. They are passionate about bringing the consumer experience alive at all points of interaction. They do this by interrupting consumers, breaking their routine and capturing their attention with innovative brand experiences that leave them wanting more. Innovative design is the process of all creative elements achieving unity, which becomes a powerful tool.

OUR PROGRESS for the perfect design How this office keeps on running for 25 years.

COM PANY

When a client needs a new image or even just a advert they call or email the company, that is the first step in the progress. When they contacted the company and if it’s a big project they will schedule a meeting with my boss Bernice and one of the marketing executives in the company, probably Sean. After the meeting they will give a briefing to the designers Pascale, and me and inform us exactly what the client wants, if it is a big project Pascale and me will both come up with an idea, if it is something small mostly one of us gets the job. After we decided who will do the job we will be given a job sheet where we need to wright down how much time we spent and if we needed stock images. When I’ve made a design it first needs a approval from Pascale and if she thinks it’s okay I will send it to Bernice and i will get her opinion, if she is happy with the design it gets send to the client who will give further changes or accepts the proposal. If the job is finished i give my job sheet with the hours to the accountant Marie Therese who will than bill the client.

THE ISLANDS OF

MALTA GOZO and COMINO The island of Malta. Malta is packed with interest, yet is laid-back and easy. There are boat trips, beautiful towns, periwinkle sea, friendly people and soul-feeding views, and you can go from swimming in glinting sea to a cliff top prehistoric site, to a harbour side restaurant, all in the space of a few hours. Combine sightseeing and beaches on Malta with a relaxing stay on Gozo, with its hillocks, small villages and carved-out coast, Also for the younger people like me they have Paceville this is a part of the city St. Julians where you can go to the club or for a nice restaurant and of course a trip around the many bar’s. There is always something to do in Paceville.

At Gozo we had the famous Azure Window with collapsed at 30th of March, For me I was one week to late to visit this wonder. But the surroundings are still beautiful nonetheless. For Comino there is the Blue Lagoon a beautiful bay with the sparkling blue water as you could see in the previous picture.

MALTA

The island around Malta Comino and Gozo are not as crowded as Malta itself, going to Gozo is very easy you can take the ferry at the end of Malta in Cirkewawa. And for Comino there is also a little boot to go to the island but the problem is the last boot leaves at 5pm.

THE

NATURE And my favorite spots

When i first came here I never expected so much nature. Malta has always been famous for their many beautiful beaches but if you get out of the urban city’s you can see nature everywhere. Malta is filled with beautiful gardens, small but pretty forests and vast areas of lush cliff faces. Due to the incredibly hot summers in Malta, most of the greenery get scorched so it can be hard to find as much lushness in the summer months, however the copious gardens and parks are all very well kept and watered so even if the beaches and cliffs aren’t quite so green.

THE

CULTURE

Religion the food and the people, Maltese religion The predominant religion in Malta is Roman Catholicism. 95% of Maltese people say they believe in a ‘’God” This is reflected everywhere on the island mostly truth churches, and there national holidays a lot of them are for religious reasons. The founders/patrons of Malta are St Paul, St Publius and St Agatha. these saint are represented all over Malta. Like St. Paul’s Bay with a statue of this patron.

TA PINU CHURCH GOZO Maltese cousine

FAMOUS DUCK

Maltese cousin shows strong Sicilian and English influences as well as Spanish, French, Maghrebin, Provençal, and other Mediterranean cuisines this is because of their history. Having to import most of its food, and having to cater for the resident foreign powers who ruled the islands, opened Maltese cuisine to outside influences. The traditional Maltese stewed rabbit or duck is often identified as the national dish. Wish is delicious.

THE

Maltese History

DISCOVERY

The first people arrived in Malta around 5200 BC. These Neolithic people arrived from Sicily and were mainly farming and fishing communities, with some evidence of hunting activities. They apparently lived in caves and open dwellings. One of the most notable periods of Malta's history is the temple period, starting around 3600 BC. The Megalithic Temples is one of the oldest free standing buildings in the world. Many of the temples are in the form of five semicircular rooms connected at the center. Malta has a long history, Malta's location has historically given it great strategic importance as a naval base, and a succession of powers, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Order of St. John, French and British, have ruled the islands. The island of Malta became an independent state in 1964, and a republic in 1974. And since 2004 the country has been a member state of the European Union.

MY

PROJECTS

And what i did these 5 months In this section I will mostly be showing the designes I made In my time by Communiqué I learned a lot from designing to marketing, when I first came here my skills in Photoshop and InDesign were limited, it wasn’t that i couldn’t use the programs more that i didn’t knew how to use a lot of functions, that mostly goes for photoshop. With InDesign I have a more complicated relationship, I know how to use it and I know most of the functions but I just don’t like it.

CHECK OUT MY GIFS

The thing i acquired the most knowledge of is making GIF’s, this was something I never did before and now after 5 months i can say i got pretty good at it, These GIF’s are mostly used for adverts on Facebook or Google. You can see them if you go to the link below.

WHAT I’VE

MADE

AT LEAST WHAT I’M PROUD OF This is some of the work I’ve made, these are the project which I did most or all of the work. I will give a quick explanation of what the work is and what it is for. On the first two pictures you see a leaflet I made for 3 brands, this leaflet is for your average supermarket but because they gave me a lot of freedom I made it very colorful and pleasant to look at. On the next page the first one was for the birthday party of the son of the boss, also got a lot of freedom here. The two next to this invitation are from a contest I made and these are the Facebook covers. Furthermore you see two things from Breaking Barriers and two from the sustainable enterprise award, which I will give a more detailed explanation the next pages. After that we have a few logo’s the first one is from Solar Solution this is a retailer in solar panels water heaters and other power related product that care for the environment. And the last one is from Mazars Connect this is a file transfer program like wetransfer.

PROCES AND HOW I MADE IT

Sustainable Enterprise AWARD

The Sustainable Enterprise AWARD. The aim of the Sustainable Enterprise Awards is to recognize, promote and reward business organizations that have made a significant contribution to the different aspects of sustainable development, like green energy and recycling. For these award they wanted a new logo a new brochure and they needed help with the looks of the ceremony. Me and Pascale both worked on making a logo as you can see from the 2nd page, the number 3 is made by Pascale the others are mine, when we gave the client this proposal they wanted us to combine the logo’s and as you can see this is the result.

MY

PROCES AND HOW I MADE IT Breaking Barriers. Breaking Barriers is a 3 year project on literacy for adults and innovation. This ERASMUS+ project is coordinated by the Directorate for Lifelong Learning. The main goal of this project is to learn people how to teach using digital media. For this conference they always need a flyer, leaflet, invitation, 3 GIF’s, and a newspaper advert. When I first started this I needed to make 3 concept and they could choose with one they wanted. After that you start finalizing the concept and begin working on the invite and the flyer the simpler designs, because after that you have an idea how this will look together and you don’t have to change anything to fit with the leaflet or the gifs.

CONCEPT IDEAS final conference

The design aspect and the finishing touches. For this conference I wanted to make it fit with the other designs but still stick out, I did this by using the same idea (a digital product) and gave it a bit more color and design. For the leaflet I made it from beginning until the end I made the design I creased the leaflets and even cut them clean. I’m really happy how this one came out.

WORK

THE CONCLUSION My goals & the summary My conclusion about an internship in Malta.

And now to summarize it all

The conclusion i had after 5 months is that it is amazing, I had a lot of fun here I’ve met great people improved my English a lot, I also learned a great amount in graphic design skills and got lots of experience with customers and working in a design studio. I know it sounds cheesy but I even learned a lot about myself.

Malta is great it has beautiful nature I improved my English, It was hard to work every day because I’m not used to it, even more because it gets so warm here in this season. And it costs a lot of money, but it is worth it.

The goals i’ve had set for myself in Malta. My goals were pretty straight forward I wanted to improve my English, learn new things and get more experience. Also I wanted to see how it is to live on my own and be more independent. Well I achieved them all even living on my self was really easy, the only problem I had was that it cost too much money at the end of the month is was always really broke. But that is probably also because I didn’t got paid at my internship or had a job after that.
