The Crossroads at 8th Project: Mixed-Use Apartment Complex ARCH 608 | Fall 2023 Instructor: Andrew Moddrell Size: 210,000 ft2 Location: Bentonville, Arkansas The Crossroads at 8th is a mixed-use, mid-rise luxury apartment complex in Bentonville, Arkansas. The project aims to serve a more established worker demographic and small families. Outdoor-Indoor relationship is a major concept, where residents and visitors alike can have direct outdoor access from anywhere in the building, either from the unit, lobby, or even the mixed use programs. The Building is also oriented to provide views into the adjacent Event Space and the development area.

Site Framework Plan The first few weeks of the project is spent developing this overall site framework for 8 student projects. The site framework allows a new approach to denser urban housing in Bentonville. The site itself incorporates a lot of Public Spaces, an ecological consideration, and a varied mixed-use program across the projects. The main attraction is a river which also acts as a retention pond.

Site Selection The Site is adjacent to 2 very areas that are expected to be very busy. 8th Street is quickly becoming a central artery of Bentonville, connecting the new and old Walmart HQs. The Event Space allows the local community to spend time and socialize, and in the weekends the space is set up to accomodate Bentonville’s Farmers Market.

Outdoor Circulation As residents approach their units, they will have near constant view of the Courtyard. The primary circulation in each floor is outdoors, which not only adds a unique aspect to the project, but also allows more fresh air and light into the units than a normal apartment would.
15
Central Courtyard The Courtyard is accessible to residents and the public. It is a green space meant to offer some shade and serenity in what would be a very busy and bustling area of Bentonville. Because of how the building is laid out, no direct sunlight will reach the garden level, but the opening allows a lot of natural light to still enter.

Highland Park Central Elementary School Principal’s Suite Project: Secured Entrance and Suite Internship Project ; Summer 2023 Size: 250 ft2 Location: Topeka, Kansas During my Internship, I was given the task to develop a Schematic Design for the Highland Park Central Elementary School’s Principal Suite. The existing suite was aging and in need of repair. The District decided to revamp the space and I was more than happy to tackle the challenge. The design requirement was that I create a space that services students, teachers, and the administrative staff. It was also imperative to create a separate, locked space from the hallway. The resulting design is a warm, welcoming space where students can feel calm to be in and the admin staff can work comfortably.
Welcoming This is the first room visitors will enter, so having a welcoming feel is very important to reduce anxiety. Created by vectaicon from the Noun Project
35
Existing Suite This is the existing suite, there is 2 people working behind the counter, the counter itself is very old and needs to be changed. While there is a lot of space, I believe it was under-utilized, messy, and cold. It was not a welcoming space for both students or teachers. The furniture is also aging badly.

This is the final proposed floor plan, I aimed to create a tidy, welcoming space for all occupants utilizing the space. I used floor to ceiling glass to create a physical separation between the spaces but the transparency does not create a harsh disconnect between the hallway and the suite. Having the couches in the space allows visitors and students to relax before meeting the principal, and the connected desks for the admin staff saves some space.

The Weave Project: Art Installaton ARCH 509 | Spring 2023 Instructor: Kurt Hong Team: Isaac Philips, Caleb Peters, Breeley Mayabb Size: 27 ft3 Location: Lawrence, Kansas The Weave is our third year DesignBuild Project. This piece enhances the conventional boundaries of a weaving concept. With this piece we challenged the concept of rigidity and fluidity as opposites and meshed them together to create a facade of softness using rigid materials. There are two parts to the project, one to design a wall-hung installation, where we decide on the initial concept and form for both projects, and the second project where we carry the design intent and transform it into a 3D shape.

Phase I : Wall-hung framed art installation
Project Prototyping
Project Prototyping and Assembly Phase I is where we decided on a design intent to carry through both projects, as a ‘Proof of Concept’. With this phase we learned the limiting factors of our assembly and materials, and how to improve the process further. The final piece is a 4’ x 4’ framed project, using CnC milled plywood to create each unique piece, before we put it together by hand. The resulting piece is a very cool 3D surface which looks like a fabric weave.

Project Prototyping
Project Prototyping and Assembly Phase II is where we carried the design intent to create a continuous surface such as a sphere. We decided to challenge ourselves by instead creating a torus, with the center core being a very tight weave that became the structural part of the project. Later on in the project we decided to display it hung, and on its side to highlight the transparency and the shape of the project.

Project Display Each of the projects were meant to be temporary art installations around Marvin Hall, the university’s architecture building. But the Dean of the School decided it would be great to keep it longer, and as of October 2023 the project is still hung up. We use a 3/16 inch steel cable to hang the project to the clamps, held to the concrete.
