HITRA AND FRØYA - the mighty archipelago on the coast of Trøndelag The people who live on this coast have from very early on been shaped by their close contact with the outside world. Our sailors felt at home on all seas and the modern coastal community continues this heritage as suppliers of quality seafood to chefs and households on all continents. The coast of Trøndelag is both wild and charming at the same time and offers experiences in the intersection between the genuine and untouched and the modern. Here, you find Hitra and Frøya, Trondheim's archipelago, in the estuary of the deep Trondheim fiord. The contrasts are great, but the people are the same; warm, welcoming and nice to deal with. We urge you to use this tourist guide frequently. Here, you will find information about how to get here, where to stay and eat and what you can see and do. Use this guide as an inspiration when you choose the holiday for you and your family and as a guide when you visit us. Welcome! THE COASTAL GUIDE HITRA AND FRØYA

«Once upon a time there were two brothers who had a great idea. As the first in the world, they started fish farming of Atlantic salmon, just off the coast of Hitra. In 1971, the brothers, Ove and Sivert Grøntvedt, put 20,000 salmon smolt into what is considered to be the first salmon farm in the world. 47 years later, Frøya and Hitra have become one of the biggest fish farming locations for salmon.  The reason is the special ocean currents. Here, the Gulf Stream from the south 12

THE COASTAL GUIDE HITRA AND FRØYA

meets the cold ocean from the north in the Barents Sea, and this makes for a relatively stable and optimal temperature for farming of Atlantic salmon. Optimal temperature makes for conditions that the salmon thrives in, and in combination with extensive knowledge and modern technology, salmon of excellent quality is slaughtered all through the year. Currently, the archipelago produces 260,000 tons of salmon every year.» • SalMar, Marine Harvest and Lerøy are currently among the world's biggest, most profitable and most innovative companies when it comes to fish farming, processing and sustainable development.    EUROPAS MEST MODERNE FABRIKK FOR TASKEKRABBE    See www.krabbe.no for amazing crab recipes. «From HitraMat's website»

«Hitramat på alle fat»

(Food from Hitra on all plates)

The starting point for the present HitraMat AS is the old trade centre Ansnes, where trade with fish and other goods has been going on since the 17th century. From here, square-sail loops went with salted fish, dried fish and stockfish, and the same boats returned with goods that the coastal people did not produce themselves. This is where Sivert Fjeldvær came in 1905. The man from Fjellværsøya traded in fish. Later, Anton Fjeldvær started to buy edible crab, prepare the catch and sell it to buyers in Trondheim. In the 1950ies, Anton Fjeldvær started to export live edible crabs to Stockholm. Sivert, one of Anton Fjeldvær's sons, went ashore and started the company HitraMat THE COASTAL GUIDE HITRA AND FRØYA

in one of the wharfs at Ansnes. Here, all fish food was prepared by hand. «Hitramat på alle fat» became the slogan. In 1988, the company's popular "Hitraball" was selected as Sør-Trøndelag's national course. Still, edible crab was just a side operation, and the crab season was short; from September 10th and a few months into the autumn. • When Sivert died, the present Anton Fjeldvær became manager. Since early in the 1990ies, the fine edible crab from the coast of Trøndelag (also called the Hitra crab) has become the main product of the company, and it is the edible crab that has become the most important supporting beam for the factory in the future. In 2002, the company moved into new and modern premises in Hitra Fiskerihavn, into what is currently Europe's most modern factory for edible crab.    BIGGEST IN NORWAY WITHIN TRADE WITH LIVE SCALLOPS    The company Seashell has been the leading trader of live scallops since its start in 1997 and has expanded its line of products through both own production and trading of Norway lobster and edible crab and more caught in fish pots. Currently, Seashell has a broad line of products within fresh quality products from fish and seafood. FRESH WATER FISHING

At Hitra, there are more than 700 fresh water lakes, and in several of them, the chances of catching trout are great. The best fishing lakes are situated in the natural reserve Havmyran, to the south-west on the inland of the island. Most people fish with worm and floater, but the biggest fish is most often caught with spinner and fly. NB! To fish trout, you need a fishing licence. You can buy it on net; www. inatur.no, or contact the tourist office. You may also bring your own fishing tackle for fresh water fishing. Equipment that is leased is most often designed for deep sea fishing

best areas for deep sea fishing and it is rich in species. The most common species are cod, coalfish, pollack, ling, Norway haddock, haddock, cusk, mackerel, halibut, salmon and sea trout. We have many players who offer lodging, gutting and freezing facilities, boats and equipment, fishing guide and instruction. The package may be tailored to your needs. Our hosts know what they do and will gladly inform you about species and catching methods. They are focused on safety on the sea by leasing flotation suits, GPS and charts. Several have also installed a tracking system in the boats so that they will know where you are at all times. Many fishing tourists return every year, year after year. They enjoy our hosts, the fact that there is space to move and the opportunity to stop and think. NB! You do not need to be a passionate fisher, there are also boats and equipment that are suited for families that want to take the children on short fishing excursions in sheltered waters.

”Folket i Flatvika” is an exhibition portraying a family consisting of several generations that live on a typical farm some place on the coast of Trøndelag in the year 1920. At this time, there is an important change going on along the coast: The transition from the old, thousand year old coastal culture to the modern era. In Flatvika, they have got both a cream separator and a sowing machine, and the oldest boy is dreaming of getting a motorboat. This is the story about the Russian ship Jedinorog that was wrecked at Kvenværet in 1760. A cold and stormy October night in 1760, a large Russian naval vessel was drifting helplessly in the Ramsøyfjorden between Smøla and Hitra. The view was restricted and the crew on board tried to steer the ship into sheltered waters to save the vessel and their own lives, but to no avail. The story about the shipwreck circulated for many years between people at Smøla and Hitra. As time went on, the stories became legends and in time, it became difficult to distinguish between reality and fantasy. Now we are telling the story again in the new exhibition "The Russian shipwreck".

Today, marine aquaculture is the country’s second largest industry, and generates billion of kroner in export values. But the beginning of this industry started small. At “the Pioneers” exhibit, one meets some of the pioneers who, in their own way, helped to develop Norwegian aquaculture into what it is today. The exhibition presents Norwegian marine aquaculture history through three major stories: The local story with animation of Hitra; the island region story; and the national story about the pioneers along the coast, from Finnmark to Vestfold through walls, photographs, interactive displays, short texts, objects on display, and light and sound. Fish farming facility

Are you curious about what is happening on a fish farming facility? Bring along your family and friends and go with Kystmuseet to one of the archipelago's many fish farming facilities. The excursion provides a balanced insight into the Norwegian fish farming industry and provides knowledge in combination with a unique experience. The excursions takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes by rib including transportation back and forth, starting from the Terminal Building at Sandstad. Guided tour of Hemnskjela War Memorial Museum

The war history of Hemnskjela is first and foremost a story of occupation. Throughout 1941, gun posts, bunkers, military installations and defense facilities were built. Large parts of the island were mined, and long barbed-wire fences were set up. Up until the liberation in 1945, the local population had to live close to the might of the German occupation and their Russian prisoners of war. Join the Coast Museum’s director down in the command bunker of Trondheim West’s artillery group. See the extensive defense system built by the occupying power, and hear stories about how the locals related to the Germans. See gifts given by Russian prisoners of war and browse photo albums from German soldiers’ own experiences during the war. A tour lasts approximately 45 minutes. But may vary as desired. The guided tours take place both indoors and outdoors, so dress for the weather. The exhibition in the command bunker is only open to booked groups, and for tours in the summer season. Dates for the summer tours will be published on the museum’s websites.

Vollanhaugen, Hemnskjela, take the road right before driving into the Hitra-tunnel on the mainland. 24

Dolm Church

The Dolm Church is one of the oldest buildings that are still in use at the coast of Trøndelag. We do not know exactly when the first church was constructed at Dolm, but we assume it was in the late part of the 15th century. It replaced an older church on the other side of the Dolm strait - Amundarås Church - on the farm Undås, or Omdås, as it is called in the local dialect these days. The church at Dolm has burnt several times - the last time in 1920, and at that time only the stone walls were left standing. During the summer of 2018, Kystmuseet in Sør-Trøndelag organizes guided tours on select days.

TEAMBUILDING IRON AGE STYLE

Most of our lodgings offer team building activities. Here is an example from Dolmsundet Hotell: Dolmsundet is situated as an east-towest bound canal between Dolmøya and «mainland» Hitra. On both sides of this strait, there are an abundance of cultur relics. The oldest traces after people stem from the Fosna tradition, that is Norway’s oldest settlement. There are objects made from flint that are between 10 000 and 11 000 years old. At Dolmsundet Hotell you can visit the longhouse from the iron age. The house is an authentic longhouse built on the site of the original longhouse that was here in the age of migration in the 5th and 6th centuries. In the historic park by the hotel they arrange Iron age Olympics, a great way of combining the inherent competitive instinct in the participants with team building internally in the group. The games may be combined with an iron age lunch or dinner in the longhouse.

FRØYA ACTIVITIES ORGANIZED BY HOTELL FRØYA

Titran - where nature meets the ocean

Do you want to experience true coastal culture, fresh air, the smell of seaweed, rain, wind and sun that shift several times throughout the day, as well as fresh food from island-rich Frøya and Hitra? Then Hotel Frøya will help tailor a plan that suits you. Hotell Frøya www.hotellfroya.no, on Facebook tel + 47 72 46 45 00 post@hotellfroya.no

In former days, Titran was a big and active fishing village on the coast of Trøndelag. The night of October 14th 1899, a great tragedy happened here. The Titran disaster is considered to be one of the greatest disasters in our history. Visit Stabben Fort which is situated on Titran. This is a coastal fortress used by the Germans during WW2. It was built by Russian and Serbian prisoners of war. Go out on the bare rock-face towards the great ocean. Nothing is as fascinating as experiencing the power of the ocean; it is cold, and may be it is raining, so remember good, watertight and warm clothes, unless you come on a sunny summer day.

Boat Transportation

Island hopping

in a slightly more exciting way by water-skiing.

THE COASTAL GUIDE HITRA AND FRØYA

If you rent a boat or travel by public transport to see our beautiful and unique archipelago counting 5400 isles, islets and skerries, you will not be disappointed! Go from island to island, breathe the atmosphere of the coast among weathered buildings, salty wharfs and sea washed flora. Mausund, Bogøyvær and Sula, live fishing villages bustling with activity all through the year. The view from the Sula lighthouse is unique irrespective of the weather conditions. The atmosphere at Bogøya is special, and a stroll in the harbour at Mausund leaves an impression that

is hard to find other places in Norway. For those who are uninitiated, this is a journey in an exotic and beautiful part of Norway. All these islands have their own places to eat with a maritime atmosphere - to be seen and felt!

Excursion to Halten

In the natural reserve and the protected landscape area Froan, we find the old fishing village Halten and the Halten lighthouse. Up to 100 years ago, Halten was bustling with activity including fish buyers and a cannery. There is not much left of such work today, but in the summer, the island awakens. In the period June, July and August there is a boat service by M/S Frøyfart.

SULA

Northwest of Frøya, with the Atlantic Ocean as its closest neighbour - lies the fishing village of Sula. The idyllic location today has approximately 50 permanent residents, a store, its own post office, some cars, and is a ferry port-of-call. Sula had a year-round settlement in the 1300s, and had its golden age in the 1400-1500s. Sula has been one of the largest fishing villages in central Norway. Sula Lighthouse has a special history, with two lighthouses from 1793 and 1804, before the present octagonal concrete tower was erected in 1909. The lighthouse was built on the highest point of the island, Sulshaugen, 35 metres

above sea level. Sula Lighthouse was automated and de-manned in 1974. SULA RORBUER and HAVHOTEL

THREE HIKING SUGGESTIONS IN HITRA

Ulvøystien, Hitra

Margretes Minde, 2.8 km one way, about 45 minutes, 38 meter above sea level - easy. Hokkeltinden, 4.6 km one way, about 1.5 hours, 153 meters above sea level – somewhat steep towards the top

Margretes Minde has been the summer house of the Parelius family of Handelsstedet Hopsjø, and is an important historical area. Here are the remains of a renaissance garden with mighty ash trees and impressive stone walls. The remains of a cellar that was used to hide smuggled goods is found in the area, and the old milk shed is restored and is open to the public all year. 34

THE COASTAL GUIDE HITRA AND FRØYA

At the Hitra Tourist Office, you can buy "Kjentmannsprøven", a booklet presenting many hiking and excursion suggestions on sea and on land, as well as a map of Hitra where the hikes are plotted in. Exit from FV381 in the centre of Melandsjø. From the exit, there is about 2 km to the parking area. From here, there is a dirt road to Margretes Minde. En route, we pass the remains of mining activity. Ut-Hitra Sportsklubb has built a lodge at Minde which is open every Sunday from January to August. You can easily bring a pram to Margretes Minde. Minde is also a good starting point for other hikes such as to the Hokkeltinden or Straumsveien over (the old post road between Hopsjøen and Straum). If you go to the left just before the lodge, you can follow marked track all the way to the top of Hokkeltinden. This track is also a part of Strømsveien, a marked track you may follow to Straum. Easy hilly terrain until the foot of the mountain, where

the climbing starts to the top. Many nice places for a stop before you reach the top. You get a nice reward when you get there with an amazing view in all directions.

Tonningen to the top,

5.5 km one way, about 2 hours, 225 meters above sea level – somewhat steep towards the top

Foto: Dolmsundet hotell Hitra

Tonningen is maybe Hitra's most beautiful mountain. This is because it stands alone and has a very characteristic shape where the mountain itself is steep, whereas the top is flat. The hike starts from the parking area in Svankilen, a nice logging road for 3 km to Munkdalen and the nice beach at Sagvatnet. From here, you take the track up Munkdalen to the top of the hill between Tonningen and Litjtonningen further north north-west to the top of Tonningen. From Tonningen, you have great view over Kvenværsøyan in the west, with Smøla, Veiholmen and the lighthouse Haugjela on the western side of Ramsøyfjorden. Towards the north, we see Bispøyan and farthest away Frøya with Titran and the Sletringen lighthouse. To get to the starting point in Svankilen, you drive FV713 to Kvenvær. At the eastern part of Kvenvær, you take the road to the

south to Svankilen. About 2.5 km from the exit to the parking area.

Ulvøystien, the whole round is 7.6 km, 2-3 hours, 50 meter above sea level - some steep parts with ladders/rope

Ulvøystien is a well marked trail all the way out to Frohavet. From the starting point at the parking area, you follow the track to the top west of the cottages. This top is 50 meters above sea level and is the highest point on the hike and gives a nice view to Frøya, Tarva, Kopparn in Bjugn and more. Follow the track where it turns west along the ocean on bare rock-face, stony beaches and ravines. It is well marked with red T-s, posts and signs. It is also well arranged with bridges, steps, ladders and rope in exposed places. The track will turn in to the island and follow the coastal moor back to the parking area. Be aware of slippery parts close by the sea when it is raining. To arrive to Ulvøystien, you go from Fjellværsøya over the bridge to Ulvøya. Just after the bridge, you turn to Selvågan. About 800 meters from the intersection, you find the parking area on the left hand side of the road (the north side) at the end of a field. THE COASTAL GUIDE HITRA AND FRØYA

THREE HIKING SUGGESTIONS IN FRØYA

Svalbalen. FOTO: Dolmsundet hotell Hitra

Besselvassheia, 6.8 km t/r

along a marked track, about 2 hours, 76 meter above sea level - easy Besselvassheia is the highest geographical point on the island Frøya. The "mountain" had no name until the autumn of 2009, when the local paper Hitra-Frøya organized a naming competition in co-operation with the local council. Besselvassheia got its name after Besselvatnet which is close by, and thus a naming tradition was continued. Even if Frøya is quite flat, lots of the landscape is illy, rocky and with small boggy areas

36

THE COASTAL GUIDE HITRA AND FRØYA

in between. In addition to Besselvassheia that is 76 meter above sea level, there are three mountain tops that are 74 meters above sea level; Hakkberget, Stutvassheia and Sandvassheia. There are also quite large bogs on the island. A part of the soil has been created in the seabed, a fact that becomes evident when we take the hike to Besselvassheia from Skarsvågen and walk up Stutvassdalen. Directions: Follow the marked track from the parking area. The first part of the hike goes along a shell sand tractor road up Stutvassdalen.

Sheep is grazing all year around, and therefore it is important to close the gates and to be considerate, especially during the lambing season. The track further towards Besselvassheia runs over rocks and small bog areas and is designed to provide nice views along the route. You can see the windmills on the neighbouring island Hitra, Tustnastabbene in Møre, Kopparen in Bjugn and in clear weather even to Titran with the lighthouse and the small fishing villages around the main island. Return along the same route.

Kjærlighetsstien, (The Love Track)

6 km, 2-3 hours – medium A walk up the beautiful Stutvassdalen, from the valley, you reach a hill and Frøya's bare rock area with a view in all directions and way out to the ocean. The terrain in Frøya gives you a sense of being in the high mountains or on a mountain plateau, and at the same time you are in the archipelago and can see the open coastal landscape in Trøndelag and big moors. Kjærlighetsstien runs along Mother Frøya's "life nerve", the big stream that cuts the island in two from Skarsvågen and Stutvassdalen in the south to Tungvågen in the north. The track that follows the bottom of the valley, is marked with warm woollen hearts and small cairns. If you are sporty, you may climb over hills and rocks along the track. The steep "kjerken" by Kjerkdalsvatnet

must be crossed by everyone. There are several picnic areas along the route. If you walk fast, the hike is done in less than an hour. If you want to enjoy your day with other physical and mental activities, you can spend as much time as you like... Most people spend 2-3 hours. Along the track, you can also do some fishing; fishing licence is not required inland on Frøya, and there is trout in the lakes.

Svalbalen

Drive towards Titran. Take the exit to Kjervågsundet just before Titran. Drive 2.1 km. You will find a small parking area on the left hand side of the road. Svalbalen is a narrow strait that is on the westernmost part of Frøya, towards Frøyhavet. The hike starts in Kjervågsundet and runs in rocky terrain with the sea close by. Hike a) and b) may be combined and be used as a round trip. a) Walk from the parking area in the direction of the red-brown house. Follow the track on the left hand side of the house. Great view when you reach the hill west of the house. The hike runs mainly on rocks to the destination; about 100 meters before Svalbalen. b) Walk from the parking area and to the white house in the end of the road. Follow the sign ”Til utsikten” (To the view). Just before the house. Up on the hill, there is a great view. From here, there is about 600 meter of sandy beaches and 3.1 km to destination a).
