PORTFOLIO 02 VOL.

Foreword My name is Vinsensius Michael Chandra. I graduated from the Parahyangan Catholic University, majoring in Architecture. I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, and have been working as an architect, design consultant, urban planner, and FF&E consultant in the past year of experience working in the design industries. In this portfolio, I want to thank you my colleague, and my mentor when I was working at my previous company. They were giving me many opportunities to develop my skills to become a better designer, I would have not learned or achieved anything without their professional guidance. So I want to give my thanks to Mr. Joshua Angsono as my colleague and my mentor in working at Atelier IMAGO for giving me the opportunity to make me realize architecture is a big world and without the right knowledge and the right attitude, one can struggle without gaining anything. I also want to give my gratitude and respect to Mr. Alwi Sjaaf for becoming my professional mentor in SAL Studio. He gave me many lessons about how to work and how to think like a consultant and also as an architect. I will always remember one lesson that he always reminds me of from time to time, and that is to always think the big picture before making my points or decision, always giving the right solution to the client because that is why they hire us. As a fellow designer, I learn that the process of designing on many projects can be achieved in many different ways before making the final decision. I think the hard part is that to challenge ourselves to push our boundaries with being as objective as possible at the same time for designing something. We will never grow, if we don’t ever acknowledge new things, new environment, new style, new change, new world, or whatever new it is. Success or fail, win or lose, we will not gain anything if we don’t give our everything.

Residential Building Bintaro 2020 ± 1131 m²

: Atelier IMAGO : Joshua Angsono : Junior Architect / Drafter / Rendering

Bintaro Residence is a housing project on a site located between two streets (Anggrek Street and Teratai Street). Due to the covid 19 issue and the impact to lead an isolated living, the design approach is to engage human social interaction by creating a community based living. The project was a proposal and it was at the conceptual phase. It was my first project working at Atelier IMAGO, the project has already had a design and I was given the opportunity to refine it, my responsibility was to design, create renders, 3D modeling, drafting the floor plan and site plan.

ANGGREK STREET

SITE

Bintaro Residence is on a site located between two roads. The design concept is based on how people see the impact of covid 19 issues on a housing project. By thinking the “new normal” can create an isolated life, the design approach is to create a community base of living.

The impact of covid 19 can lead a life with less interaction with people minding their own business. The goal of the design is to engage a person or a family to have a healthy social life, people can have a conversation with the neighborhood, trade goods, or do an activity, etc. By living together can also encourage people to be more social with each other and can remind each other to stay healthy, clean, etc.

Residential Building Jakarta 2020 / 2021 ± 320 m²

Firm Principal Roles

: Atelier IMAGO : Joshua Angsono : Junior Architect / Drafter / Rendering

FS Residence is a residential project that is located at Puri, Jakarta. The site is on the corner and has two faces, one that faces north and the other one is facing west. It consists of a 3 floor with balcony on the 1st floor and 2nd floor with secondary skin facade to protect the direct sun especially from the west side of the house. The project was at the design development phase, I had the opportunity to learn to create architecture details and talked to vendors to learn more about the specs of the material that had been used. I was responsible to create detailed drawings and other construction drawings such as doors and windows.

GKY Greenville is a church that is located in Greenville, Jakarta. The site is located near the old Greenville church. The building has 5 floors with a deck at the top and was designed using glass block material which was a material that dominated the entire building. The project was at the construction phase when I was given the responsibility to be the person in charge of the project. At that time my job is to come every once a week to the site discuss with contractors, engineers, structure engineers, project managers, and each of their assistants. It was the most challenging experience in my life at the time aside from my first experience working as a project architect.

The left side of the building is where the vertical circulation and the wet area such as toilets and baby room were located. It has a glass block from down to top with structure and an H-beam that supports it with a shape that looks like a cross and has an LED that lights at night.

PUBLIC SPACE The purpose of public space on the ground floor is used for public activity such as gathering, communicating, etc for people. The goal of the design is to give space for human activity rather than space for parking. Use of space in Jakarta’s building usually tends to give so much space for cars so that people can park theirs. By creating a space for human activities with trees and plants, it gives a sign to appreciate human kinds and nature.

GLASS BLOCK The glass block is a material that can reflect and also refract light from the outside to the inside. The church needs as many lights to travel inside the building so that trees and plants can grow inside the building. The vegetation inside the building is a symbol that there is life inside the church.

KOPPI in Yogya plans to create an extension for their cafe located at Laksda Adisucipto Street. The site is located hidden in the back of the main (cafe) building. The project was at a conceptual phase of the design process and it was my second project working at SAL Studio, I was given the opportunity to create an alternative design for the interior and layout in the project. I was responsible for designing, drafting (schematic), and also rendering all of the design alternatives.

The site is an open space with dimension 8.3m x 5.5m without shelter. The purpose is to serve as an extension of the main buiding which is a small cafe with 3-4 seating. The design approach of the project is to respond to covid 19 issues, people no longer come to cafes for a place to dine for their services but rather so a safe, clean, and healthy space to dine.

The concept of the design is “Terrace” where a typical Indonesian’s house to have a terrace in their house to separate the outdoor and indoor of their house. The goal of this design is to create an atmosphere similar to a house on the terrace by creating a small void for trees and plants so people inside have a view inside. The seating arrangement is set to circulate the open space. The furniture of the cafe all is loose furniture to increase flexibility to respond to a small space cafe.

Urban Project Jakarta, Kemang Raya Street 2021 ± 2.7 km

Firm Principal Roles

: SAL Studio : Alwi Sjaaf : Urban Planner / Urban Designer / Drafter

Kemang Raya Street is one of several urban areas in Jakarta that has gentrification. Within its development and urban growth, buildings in Kemang Raya change their function from residential in the past to commercial area and becomes one of the busiest streets in Jakarta. The project is to research and create an urban design proposal. We were given the opportunity to share our idea with the former chairman of BAPPEDA.

Gentrification Further research shows that a phenomenon called “Gentrification” may happen in Kemang Raya Street. Gentrification is a process of social structure transformation in a certain area within its people live in it. Back in 1960 Kemang is just one of the rural areas in Jakarta, a place where a small houses with few individuals or families live in it. But because of a certain event and the continuity of development, Kemang becomes an area filled with numerous of commercial buildings. What we are seeing through this day, Kemang is known with many commercial places and its unique variant of attraction, it becomes one of the busiest streets in Jakarta. We can look at the change and the impact on Kemang Raya Street

NETWORK

ACCESS

Kemang Raya Street is a 2-way street and has a distance of ± 2.7 km. The width of the street is 9 m, with 2 lanes on it.

Looking at the mapping, Kemang Raya Street has a few nodes that indicate an intersection. This is also the reason why Kemang Raya Street has low traffic flow causes a lot of traffic jams.

COMMERCIAL

GREEN SPACES

The impact of gentrification in Kemang leads to a dominating of a high number of commercial buildings that were built along Kemang Raya Street.

Alongside Kemang Raya Street, there is a very low number of green spaces discluding the trees. All of the green spaces in Kemang Raya Street are used for cars to park with pavement, asphalt, or concrete materials. 63

MISS USE OF PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY Visiting Kemang Raya Street, many of the pedestrian walkways are being used for motorcycles to parking. One of the reasons it happens causes of Gojek drivers tends to wait to pick up customers.

UNFRIENDLY FOR DISABLED Tactile paving for people who are disabled is designed to not be straight and it’s not safe because it can increase the possibility of an accident.

UNEVEN AND SLANTED PEDESTRIAN Numerous lots have access for cars to park in their own space, it creates a pedestrian walkway with an uneven and slanted surface because of the ramps.

STREET FURNITURE Street furniture with no control also creates an unpleasant experience for pedestrians to walk.

SPACES ≠ ACTIVITIES The space in pedestrian walkways of Kemang Raya Street is not meant to shelter many activities because it’s not wide enough to fit, and it can create an unpleasant experience for pedestrians to walk.

2020 / 2021

CAR PARKING Building’s front space is being used for cars to park in their own lot. The problem is the material is not less permeable than normal soil considering Kemang Raya Street is supposed to be a water infiltration area.

PASSIVE FRONTAGE Not all of the buildings along Kemang Raya Street are commercial use, there’s happen to be a few that of residential use and have a fence or wall in their lot making a passive frontage.

PRESENT CONDITION Kemang Raya Street has two lanes with each 4.5m width which was not effective. Numerous lots have a space in front of their buildings for parking space. Instead of that, those spaces are better to be used for human activities which can encourage people to walk, gather, and can create traffic for healthy commercial business buildings.

PLANNING PROPOSAL Based on ITDP research, we found out 3.5m width for cars to drive is still safe and effective, the extra space can serve as a buffer for safety reasons. Instead of parking space, every lot should create a public space for people to have public activities inside.

REMOVING FENCES/WALLS A prototype is developed in Magran’s building, a furniture showroom. We can see the current pedestrian without buffer and big space for cars to park inside the building. By removing fences/walls it creates access and a welcoming front area of the building.

DEFINING SPACES The pedestrian walkways need to have a clarity of space for people to walk and space for a buffer, it creates order to define a path to walk and a path to drive. The buffer can become green spaces where trees and plants can grow or an elevated parklet so rainwater can still flow to the gutter.

68

V.MICHAEL CHANDRA

PUBLIC SPACES The spaces in front of the buildings can become anything that has a purpose to encourage people to interact. Limiting the number of cars by directing them to park behind the building is one of the solutions. Public spaces are meant to be used for people for having social activities, small retail to sell goods, or new business opportunities that can lead to more traffic.

PERMEABLE MATERIALS Materials that are used for the public space should be permeable as possible for rainwater can drain effectively. Kemang Raya is a water infiltration area, by creating more green space, ecofriendly environment can reduce the risk of flooding.
