We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new piece. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

Extensive knowledge and quality materials. Very fair pricing and quick turn around time. Steve and Tammy are always helpful. -Larry

The Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine relies on the community of trailerites to contribute vintage trailering happenings from all corners of the USA. Hobbyists can be found in every state in the nation and there is no way we could cover all of that ground without our readers help. We have been very fortunate to have trailer owners, photographers and writers share their works with us. We want the VCT Magazine to be a product of the readers. If you have a trailer that you would like to see in the magazine, please send us original high resolution photos and a bit about your vintage journey. We welcome contributions for the following features: • Before They Were Vintage. Photos from the period depicting vintage trailering. • How-To. We get many requests for how-to articles or tips and tricks you have discovered doing trailer restorations. • Vintage Vendors. Vintage trailers that have been converted into businesses. • Rally Recaps. Photos and a recap of a rally you attended. • Camp Vintage. Did you find a neat old campground that was in business back in the 1940’s - 60’s? In addition to the magazine we are also working on our third Vintage Camper Trailers book. This one will be a cookbook! Our first book was all about the people in the hobby. Our second book told about the rallies, how we got started and more of the people (and their trailers) that share in the hobby with us. Our next book will continue to be about the people in the hobby. How they cook in their vintage trailer space and their favorite recipes. Do you have a favorite recipe that would fit in one of the chapters of the VCT Cookbook? • BBQ. Cooking with Fire. • One Dish Delights. Crock Pot Recipes. • Cast Iron Cooking. Camp cooking old school style. • Vintage Appetizers. Fun recipes inspired by mid-century memories. • Make it Ahead. Dishes that travel well for camping. • Desserts. More than a Smore. • Catch, can and preserve. Recipes for the real campers who hunt, fish or pick their food and prepare it themselves in their campers. We would also like to integrate potluck, kids, and vintage vendor recipes into the appropriate chapters. If you want to be a part of any of this craziness. Let us know. vintagecampertrailers@gmail.com www.vintagecampertrailers.com

AN ENGAGING TALE OF A GIRL, HER MUSIC, A DUDE AND A TRAILER NAMED NANCY ROSE 6

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

As an artist, I have a love for all things with a story. That's how I first became a lover of all things vintage. As a professional singer/songwriter for the past 8 years, I knew I wanted to someday hit the road and share my message with a broader audience. So when I finally got the chance earlier this year, I knew I would need a reliable tour bus for my travels. Even so, I didn't want to give up my visual need for expression just by settling on something that would 'get the job done. Then I got to thinking: Why not fulfill my lifelong dream of owning a retro camper and take THAT on the road? Instead of staying in hotels each night, we'd be able to stay at local campsites and experience so much more of what each new city had to offer. My search for the perfect vintage camper began. I spent six months researching and contacting so many amazing people, wanting to know every detail about their camper, its weight, what kind of hitch it had, what restorations and modifications were made to it, etc. There were some lovely candidates, but nothing felt quite right. And then, there she was. Nancy Rose. I knew the instant I saw this retro 1966 Comanche that she would steal my heart. I mean, she was perfect. A light teal stripe wrapped around her 18-foot frame, and a floral decorated interior welcomed all who visited. Camping in her was like living in a life-sized Barbie house from half a century ago. She still had the original 1966 teal stove; a bumper sticker that read “Tin Can Tourist;” and a small wooden Dutch shoe on the key ring that was left by the original owner. She had been loved. You could just tell. Someone had hand-sewn pillows to match the curtains, took immaculate care of the interior and kept nearly everything original. She had a story, and I couldn’t wait to add more pages to the book.

By Alizabeth Von Presley

Just a few days after purchasing her, we hit the road. My band mates and I lived in the camper for a month, touring from Iowa to Memphis, North Carolina to New York, Ohio to Chicago. We put 4,800 miles on Nancy Rose on that first trip. There were a few growing pains and setbacks. We got a flat in North Carolina and wound up having to www.vintagecampertrailers.com

replace the tires and install new suspension leafs on both sides (Nancy Rose still had the original 1966 ones on her). But it didn't matter. She was an eye-catcher that drew attention everywhere she went. People asked if they could take photos of her. Some people even had bets going on how old she was before walking up and asking us her age. The camper is part of my family now. She’s named after my grandmother who we lost to breast cancer a few years ago. My grandma always supported me and my musical endeavors and now it’s like she’s touring around the country with me, keeping me safe and protected. We head out on our second tour in July, when we'll travel to places like California, Colorado and Arizona. I can’t wait to not only share my music with new friends, but to share Nancy Rose and the joy she brings to everyone who sees her. We hope we'll see you on the road -- and that if we do, you'll stop and take a moment to admire this vintage beauty for yourself.

1962 Streamline Countess She is comfortable in her own skin and proudly shows her age, and attributes her youthful appearance to exfoliation and endless hours of polishing. Story by Caroline Lacitinola / Photos by Paul Lacitinola The vintage camper trailer hobby started for Craig Thomas and his wife Diana when they purchased a 1956 Airstream Flying Cloud. It was only a shell, yet Diana was excited about the possibilities of fixing it. At about the same time, they found a 27 foot, 1951 Spartanette Tandem. Craig instantly was drawn to the Spartanette as he recalled spending time in one as a child in the mountains of New Mexico. With the emotional connection to the Spartanette, the Thomas family decided to restore this prior to the Flying Cloud. This was a huge endeavor as the Spartan needed a full restoration. Fast forward a couple of years and the Spartanette as been completed and the Thomas’ have added a 1962 Streamline Countess to their fleet of backyard mobile mansions. We

caught up with them at the Trailers in the Trees Rally in Felton, CA. Amazingly, Craig and Diana have done it again! Cranking out an incredible, classic trailer that respects the period in which it was created, but utilizes some modern design features and amenities. Gold fleck automotive paint is the background for the backlit wooden feature that adorns the center of the ceiling running the length of the interior and containing the controls for the roof mounted air conditioning. The Jetson’s style “control center” in the kitchen appears to be right out of the space age when in fact, Craig just dreamed it up. The living area is dominated by a booth style seating area that contains the apparatus that causes the flat screen to rise out of the side

When he started restoring trailers, Craig, a visual effects artist, knew very little about restoration, but was willing to learn. When he fact, he’d hit the mother lode of trailer spotted an ad for the Travel Mate, the deals...the Travel Mate was exactly as deal looked too good to be true...a fully- listed! The seller was a house-flipper restored trailer with an asking price of who decided to do the same thing with only $1,600. Wayne immediately called a vintage trailer. Fortunately for Wayne, 20 www.vintagecampertrailers.com

the woman didn’t know the value of a restored vintage trailer. While hooking up for the four-hour tow back to his home in Eclectic, AL, Wayne asked the seller why she sold the Travel Mate for such a cheap price. Her answer was, “Oh, was that too low?” May we all be as lucky as Wayne some day! Although the Travel Mate was in good condition, Wayne hated the trailer’s exterior colors of battleship gray with black trim, so he painted it turquoise and white. He also painted the interior using the same vintage color scheme,

then he and Valerie decorated the Travel Mate to their liking with dozens of period pieces. Outside, a hand-painted welcome sign created by a friend greets visitors with images of a vintage trailer, pink flamingo, and vintage cartoon character. Wayne started his vintage trailer rally with the help of The Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine Rally Starter Kit. Approximately two dozen trailers preregistered and another half dozen registered on-site, making this a successful first-time affair. Held the weekend after Memorial Day, Wayne plans on making his Campers and Glampers Vintage Trailer Rally an annual event, which includes a Saturday flea market and open house. This year’s flea market almost didn’t happen due to a floodworthy

Unfortunately, due to the forecast several people departed before the weather arrived, so their absence brought down the number of trailers remaining for the afternoon open house. For those who stuck it out, the sun was shining brightly by lunchtime, allowing trailerites to set up their outside displays in time for viewing.

prior to attending the rally and painted it just two days before towing it to Pine Mountain. This couple plans on doing a slow restoration on their trailer. Darryl and Suzie Odom from Parrish, AL were at the open house with their 1972 Serro Scotty Highlander and 1960 Chevrolet Nomad Station Wagon tow vehicle, both painted in identical red and white. You may remember this couple from the January-February 2018 issue of “Vintage Camper Trailers,” when I wrote about their beautifullyrestored 1967 Avion truck camper strapped onto the back of a 1968 Ford Ranger Pickup. Darryl told me that ever since he was featured in that issue of “Vintage Camper Trailers,” he’s become a rock star within his circle of friends, proving that this magazine came make you almost famous!

A few of the trailers in attendance at the open house included a 1970 Shasta 1400 owned by Donnie and Monica Blevens from Louisville, KY; a 1971 Holiday Rambler owned by Ernest Bryson from Silva, NC; a 1967 Layton owned by Todd and Shelby Atwell from Opelika, AL; and a 1967 Shasta owned by James and Penny McDaniel from Griffin, GA. The McDaniel’s had Another Serro Scotty Highlander at the purchased their Shasta three weeks open house was a 1978 model owned 22 www.vintagecampertrailers.com

by Susan Elliott from Lake Tillery, NC. Susan’s husband, Mitch, made it a point to mention that the Highlander was not his, for he owns a huge 5th Wheel with a residential fridge-freezer, three slideouts, three televisions, washer-dryer, and a working fireplace. So the vintage thing is definitely Susan’s thing... not Mitch’s thing. That’s okay, we’re still going to make Mitch almost famous by writing about him in “Vintage Camper Trailers.” Steven Dahlen and Diane Burch from Roswell, GA were there with their 1958 DeVille Legionaire, which they purchased partially-restored two years ago and have since completed. This trailer still has an original stove and jalousie windows. A 1970 Forester Lowliner owned by Barbara Snead and Mary Lou Yacobelis from Ocala, FL was at the open house. After buying this trailer in February

2018, they repaired a soft spot in the floor, decorated the interior to their tastes, but left the exterior as it came, which includes original skin, windows, and door. Then there was “Maggie May,” a 1973 Serro Scotty Gaucho owned by Delon and Roben Wigley from Chickamauga, GA. Because the interior was an “ugly beer can” when they purchased this trailer (their words...not mine), this couple did a complete interior restoration, including all new wood and electrical. As for the exterior, all they did was add an awning and new paint. Many other interesting trailers were in attendance at the open house, but I’m saving them to write feature articles for future issues of “Vintage Camper Trailers.” These trailers include a 1972 Lark, a 1972 Shasta Starflyte, a 1958 Trotwood Cub Deluxe, a 1968 Avion, and a 1969 Shasta Compact (which my wife and I purchased three weeks after the rally). As a first-time rally host, Wayne Parducci, with the help of his wife, Valerie, did an excellent job. For an enjoyable time in 2019, be sure to mark the 2nd Annual Campers and Glampers Vintage Trailer Rally on next year’s calendar.

AristocratAnonymous PISMO BEACH, CA On April 27 & 28, 2018, the 1st Annual SoCal Aristocrat Anonymous Rally was held in Pismo Beach, California, at the Pismo Coast Village RV Resort. This was a small and intimate event, consisting of 40 trailers, campers and motorhomes. This event was never intended to be Aristocrats only, but they were the majority. Approximately 80% of the trailers and campers were Aristocrats. Other makes represented

were Aljo, Corvette, Winnebago, GMC, Kenskill and few others. Friday, the rally was kicked off with a friendly Meet and Greet. This broke the ice for many of the new comers/ first timers and gave a chance for old friend to get reacquainted. The night ended with a group campfire and a lot of laughs, so much so we were told to keep it down.

Trailer (see pictures of the winners). There was also one attendee that came from out of state. She travelled 470+ miles. Thank Kay McCormick. The only issue of annoyance was the wind gusting through the campground both days of the rally. This caused many not to put up their awnings and those that did, to take them down. There were a few that rode it out and left them up. In the evening the winds would always die down. It’s all a part of camping. The Aristocrat Anonymous Trailer group would like to thank Pismo Coast Village RV Resort, their management and the office personnel (Haley and Darrell) for being so accommodating and giving. They came by and checked with the Wagon Master to see if all was satisfactory and if there was anything else they could do. Fun was had by all. For about 40% of the participants it was their first time to ever attend a Trailer Rally. Many of the attendees knew each other through social 26 www.vintagecampertrailers.com

media but met for the first time in person at the Rally. By Saturday evening at the potluck dinner, everyone knew of each other and had shared stories about their trailer. So, due to the overwhelming success of the event and unanimous show of hands at the potluck dinner, the 2nd Annual SoCal Aristocrat Anonymous Rally is already in the planning stage. A big thank you to the following people for coordinating this event; Rudy Hernandez – Wagon Master, Susan Breshears – Assistant Wagon Master, her husband Tom Breshears and all the others that pitched in at the event. Without the help, this would not have gone off as smoothly as it did.

The Vintage Airstream Club Celebrates 25 Years The Vintage Airstream Club caravan began in Baker City, Oregon, and ended at the VAC Rendezvous at the Powerland Museum in Brooks, Oregon. Leader Paul Drag, and co-leaders Dal Smilie and Shirley Bollinger, planned the caravan the way Wally Byam would have done it. The Caravan was done in two segments: Baker City to Bend (June 13 - 17 and Bend to Salem (June 18 -22). Baker City is Airstream founder Wally Byam’s birthplace. Highlights in the surrounding area included visiting Wally’s Exhibit at the Baker Heritage Museum, National Historic Oregon Trail Museum, Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge and a wine and cheese party at a local art gallery.

Nightly driver meetings and happy hours, music gatherings with strummers, pickers and harmonica enthusiasts filled the air with camaraderie. The caravan moved on to the Wilson Ranches Retreat where a catered dinner and breakfast were welcomed by the campers. Those who stopped at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center were in for an educational geologic and fossil treat. Another pleasant dry camp was at the WAAAM Museum (Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum) in Hood

River. It rained; pizza was ordered and enjoyed under the picnic shelter. One member even chose the rain opportunity to wash his vintage auto and trailer while there. The group moved on to the J Bar J Ranch in Bend, Oregon. A beautiful sunset secured the mood, and the acoustic roots music group led by Nanci Drag entertained once again. The next morning Justin and Ana Scribner and staff, nationally recognized trailer restorers, provided an Open House & Bend Classic Tow Show at Flyte Camp — another perfect day. There were relaxing nights spent at in Crescent Lake with a hot dog roast and the Belknap Hot Springs (full hookups).

What a wonderful group and trip, thanks to our leader Paul Drag and co-leaders Dal Smilie & Shirley Bollinger! Beautiful ,memories!!!

The final night(s) were spent at the Powerland Heritage Park in Brooks in the car museum parking lot and grass field. The car museum was under construction for expansion on the ground floor and a second story addition. The vintage group purchased a paver tile for the front of the museum as a thank you for the CEO’s hospitality. Airstream historian, Fred Coldwell, gave two informational presentations in the evening on the famous Oregon Pendleton blankets. It was time to say good-by to some caravaners and time to join others for the vintage trailer parade into the 61st WBCCI International Rally in Salem, OR.

FRIDGE FIX The Marvel brand refrigerator is a common appliance installed in 1950’s vintage trailers. Many still function well today, but they also have a common issue that you can fix yourself. By Jim Lundal The Marvel refrigerator can be used with a block of ice or 110V AC. We have owned 2 trailers, a 1953 Terry and a 1958 Kenskill, and both have original Marvel refrigerators. Also, both have a common issue with the seal around the main door. The seal covers the gap between the door and the cold box. This “seal” is not the door gasket but a transition around the refrigerator opening. In both our units the seal was brittle and began chipping away. I am not sure if the original seal is hard/brittle originally, or over time and the years it becomes brittle. The seal begins chipping off when bumped or cleaned. Pieces are seen laying on the box bottom. If you have refridgerator like this Marvel you probably have experienced the issue with the brittle seal around the inside of the door. Here is a fix you can do with parts from the hardware store .

*

Initial searching for a replacement seal failed to locate anything with a “rib” on the back (used to insert into the gap) and have a wide width to cover the previous seal area. The seal needs to adhere and remain covering the gap when the door is opened. The product we found (at Orchard Hardware) is a Door Sweep and is seen in the adjacent photos. The rear surface has two strips of double back adhesive tape. Each strip of double-back tape has a layer of protective tape for handling and cutting the length needed. Measure the length needed on the fridge and cut with a utility knife. Check that the length cut fits the fridge before removing the protective layer. Remove the green protective layer and align the seal edge with the fridge front as seen in the picture. Press the sticky surface to the fridge and then remove the remaining protective layer on the adhesive strip and press to adhere the seal.

When it comes to restoration, there is usually more than one "right" way to do things. Have you figured out a simple fix or have a "best" that you have found to fix things on your vintage trailer? Share them with our readers. vintagecampertrailers@gmail.com

An alternative is to remove both strips of protective layers and install the seal in the fridge aligning the front edge first while holding the inner edge off the surface. Once the front edge is positioned correctly the inner edge can be pressed down. *Note the orientation of the seal in the adjacent figure. The raised area is inside the fridge. www.vintagecampertrailers.com

1960 Comet Bill and I met and we found we had a mutual love for vintage travel trailers By Trena Beckmann

Here on the high plains of Texas, we love finding the VCT magazine in the mailbox. The excitement of finding a hidden treasure. The restorations. The love stories of old trailers and their owners and the trails they make together. It’s all just wonderful. I guess we love it the way we do, because we are a part of it all as well.

In November of 2014, Bill and I met and we found we had a mutual love for vintage travel trailers. I had joined Sisters on the Fly in July 2014 and special ordered a 2015 RPOD of which I had just received when we met. He shared his 1960 Comet with me right a way, but it was hard to see all of her as she was buried in the back of the shop behind cars and

car parts. After returning from the International Edsel meet in Detroit and touring the Vintage Trailer Museum in Elkhart, Indiana in July 2017, Bill dug her out and the restoration commenced. Her maiden voyage was to a SOTF event. Unlike my RPOD (which I love), she is missing all the bells and whistles. What she lacks there, she makes up for in simplicity. Park her, unload a lawn chair or two and have a cold drink. Eventually, June will be towed by a 1959 Edsel Villager Wagon(9 passenger). Her name is Loretta. She is up next on the restoration list.

Owner: Bill Blasingame Owners Misses: Trena Beckmann Hometown: Amarillo, TX Our favorite event: Sister Mister event with Sisters on the Fly. Our favorite campground: State Park in Blanco, Texas.

Bill did all of the work himself, which included polishing all of the aluminum. He took every window apart and polished each piece. I did help him a bit along the way, mostly with the skin. We had all new cushions made. I painted the interior and made all of the curtains.

You are never too old to start a new hobby according to Janet Mekech from Springfield, Oregon. While taking care of her in-laws, one wheelchair bound and one with Alzheimers, Janet found a few hours of respite each week to work on her vintage Oasis trailer. It was her time to create and make something beautiful. Janet loves to get her hands dirty and was not afraid to jump in and get to work on her Oasis. It took her two year to complete with a little help

from her husband and friends. The skin was removed and Janet’s friend replaced all the rotten wood. Her husband, a retired electrician, kindly rewired and plumbed the trailer. What looks to be wallpaper is really paint with a bit of added glitter. After visiting a local farm that was salvaging wood, Janet decided to use a slab of black walnut for her countertop. 10 layers of spar urethane later, Janet was happy with how it looked and her countertop was complete. The flooring is a concrete rock attached to sheeting. Janet said it wasn’t hard to install but it was very messy. Because of the rounded corners in the Oasis, she had to tear the sheeting apart to make it fit the corners. On the exterior, Janet had Ed Hubbs airbrush a wildlife scene along the lines of the original Oasis paint scheme. Vintage trailers are just giant doll houses for Janet to restore and decorate. Janet will tell you that one of her trailers is never finished until it makes her smile. More photos next page www.vintagecampertrailers.com

additional bed. The original fell woefully short of this. I rebuilt the dinette boxes, but we kept the original springy dinette bench seats. We are in the process of recovering those.

Additional Tasks

Speaking of beds, I rebuilt the gaucho bed in the back and bought a new futon mattress for it. No one needs to sleep on a mattress from 1964 in the name of authenticity. The lamps are original; one is red and the other amber. We replaced the electrical box on the exterior. The propane hurricane lamp is also original and functions perfectly. It was certainly interesting

At Heffrons.com we love receiving testimonials from our customers. But sometimes they become more than just a positive review, they become a story. Everyone who owns a vintage trailer has a story. The journey can sometimes be difficult, and there are many lessons learned along the way. However, once the project is completed, the reward for their hard work is that much sweeter. Heffrons recently received a testimonial from a customer named Kathryn who recently purchased a 1964 Shasta Airflyte which she named “Kitty”. You could tell from her writing she couldn’t be more proud of her work and Kathryn was kind enough to walk us through the transformation.

Initial Purchase

We thought it was in pretty good shape until we got it home and really looked closely. She has great bones and a solid foundation, but really needed some interior work. Previous owners had put plywood over the original walls and painted the cabinetry. We ripped out the front and back walls, replaced it with some nice wood that would bend to fit the curvature, and shellacked them an amber color. We repainted the cabinets since they were already painted, choosing a subtle color scheme. When we bought the trailer it was blue and red. We chose pale yellow and a light turquoise that matched the stove and ice box and added red accents like curtains.

Kitchen Remodel

I totally rebuilt the kitchen counter using half inch plywood along with the retro boomerang laminate, and metal banding from Heffrons. I replaced the sink, kept the original faucet, and replaced the pump faucet myself. I built the dinette table using the same materials as the counter, making it big enough to drop down in between the dinette benches to serve as an 36

lighting that for the first time! I did update the propane tank, regulator, and hose, which connected seamlessly to the existing copper fittings. That was a nice surprise. We replaced the flooring as well. That part was easy. The outside will be repainted over the winter but is in decent shape now. The remodel up to this point took about 2 months. It was not a "frame up" restoration but was moderately extensive.

Final Thoughts

We stick within a two hour radius of home with her, mainly because of time restrictions. She is certainly road worthy to go farther though. She garners attention wherever we go. People, both young and vintage themselves, love to see her and reminisce about vintage campers. Our very first outing brought an absolute deluge of rain all weekend, but she leaked not a drop of water. The jalousie windows kept the rain out even while open, due to the nature of their design.

It was great sitting inside at the dinette playing cards and games and drinking wine while it poured outside. I have owned an expensive, large, obnoxious 40 foot diesel pusher, and I have tent camped. This is absolutely my favorite way to camp. She is light and easy, with no mechanical parts to break down. We are fully set

up to camp within 10 minutes of arriving!

See You Soon!

Every photo Heffrons receives from customers is unique because a little part of the customer can be found through their hard work and vision. No matter the project, big or small, we hope this story gives you inspiration of what is possible

and helps you come up with ideas for your own camper, trailer or motorhome. To learn more you can visit our website: www.Heffrons.com or give our office a call. We look forward to hearing from you!

73 and 80 Years Young

Jack Parrill and his better half, Patty, recently completed their first restoration on a 1962 Mobile Scout. At 73 and 80, Jack and Patty decided they needed to find and restore a vintage trailer after they read a copy of the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine. This energetic couple did all the restoration work on their own, even making the curtains by hand.
