What our customers have to say about us

We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new piece. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

It is not hard to recruit new trailerites in to the vintage trailering hobby. It seems that at every event we attend, rally that we host, or presentation we give, we meet people that have questions about buying their first trailer or fixing the one they have. Trailers sell quickly off of our social media and website. We have recently upgraded our website’s “For Sale” page. You can now view trailers by region so you are only looking at trailers near where you are willing to buy from. Many of the trailers we post for sale are also posted on our Facebook page, sent out on Twitter and some are even posted to Instagram. If you are looking for a trailer, be sure you are tapped in to our social media to hear about the deals first. If you see something you like, contact the seller directly. Posting your comments is great to share thoughts and compliments, but the seller may not be monitoring their multiple posts all of the time and you may not get a response and miss the deal. We have also added a “Rentals” directory to the website. We are frequently contacted for photo shoots, trade shows, commercials, weddings etc. that want to rent a vintage trailer. Often we are not able to supply something because it is too far away or we do not have the type of trailer they need. We are creating a directory of trailers that people are willing to rent to those that need to rent them! Visit our website if you are interested in renting yours, or need to rent one for yourself! Vintage trailers appeal to so many people you can see them showing up in TV commercials and a variety of magazine articles. Where someone may have once rented a vintage carriage or car for their wedding they may now want a vintage trailer that can be used as a bar or changing room or that adds ambiance to an outdoor affair. If you are at a trade show or open air market imagine the attention a vintage trailer will get! Companies with a need for a temporary office or showroom may want a vintage trailer to grab people’s attention. You may even be willing to set yours up at a campground for someone to enjoy for a weekend. The possibilities are endless. While there are companies like Tinker Tin already doing this; they too are limited by how far they can travel. If you are in California and need to rent a trailer, contact Tinker Tin (See ad page 26.) If you are interested in buying or renting a trailer (or renting yours out) visit the Vintage Camper Trailers website.

Sheep Wagon This is my custom made mini version of a Sheep Wagon made by a man in Colorado. We communicated by email for 4 months on the specifications and he built it exactly as I wanted it. Sheep Wagons are normally 6x12 and have a double bed. This one was made on a 6x8 trailer and has a single bed. It’s a “one butt “ camper as my girlfriends say. It’s decorated in a western theme and I camp in it and show it at my Sisters on the Fly charity events where it’s always a big hit. It’s has insulation in the walls and has a layer of insulation between the inside ceiling and the outside metal roof. It’s air

conditioned, so it’s comfortable in the summer, but when it rains hard it sounds like a hail of gunfire on that metal roof. I will add that a gentle rain makes quite a pleasing sound that will put you right to sleep. It has a huge amount of storage under the bed and on both sides of the table inside the bench seat. There’s also drawers on each end of the bed that are very roomy. Authentic sheep wagons generally had a canvas top and a wood stove inside for heating and cooking. so I use a small electric heater. I camped in the snow in Tennessee at 21 degrees and was toasty warm. I just use an electric burner for cooking but most of our meals are cooked outside anyway. The outside is made from T1-11 pine paneling trimmed out with cedar. The inside walls are tongue and groove bead board and the floor is tongue and groove 1x6 pine planks. The ceiling and roof are galvanized corrugated metal. It pulls so easily you don’t know it’s there but backing it up isn’t as easy as a long trailer. -Take care and Happy Trails!

Sheep Wagon

The life of a sheep-herder is a peculiarly lonely one. Often months pass without giving him the opportunity of seeing a human being. His faithful dog is his only companion. He generally has a team and a covered wagon in which he sleeps at night during the winter, and wherein he stores the necessary provisions for his daily food. It is his duty to seek the best available pasturage, and, when the grass in one neighborhood has been exhausted, to drive the flock to a new and fresh supply. from http://www.wyomingtalesandtrails.com/

Gypsy Time Trave Michel Olson and Christy Horne are the husband and wife team who have history ringing in the ears of millions of people all across the USA. Billed as the Gypsy Time Travelers.com they have a stage show, they call fabulous storytelling with live anvil accompaniment. Michel Olson is an eccentric builder, a Master Blacksmith, a welder and woodworker extraordinaire. In 2006 he bought a used Freightliner FL60 cab and rails and designed a Castle for the back. The Castle was to become the couple’s new RV, stage, and blacksmith shop for their traveling stage show. Or as Christy likes to call it their “recreational castle.” They found a former Penske Rental Truck. The box had been removed because a renter had run it into a balcony. Some temporary taillights got the rig home one afternoon in October of 2006. Michel and Christy knew they had to leave on a specific day in April of 2007 for their first show. The rig had to be done by then. Michel worked 16 hour days almost every day and with JLondon and Christy’s help they made it out of the driveway with 20 minutes to spare.

The couple named their new Haus Truck “Florence” after Christy’s grandmother. “She was one of the few people who supported us in our more unique job choices over the decades!” said Christy. Florence is the couples third rig. The first two were trailers they pulled with a Ford F350 Van. The couple still uses the first two trailers and can now even tow them with Florence. After 10 years on the road Michel and Christy had their dream rig. A rig with a few more living amenities than the past two had. “The other rigs really focused on the show, not our ability to live in the rig between shows.” said Michel. “We wanted something with a little more form, function and style!”

Florence has two 8x8 loft style bedrooms upstairs in telescoping turrets. Michel and Christy’s bedroom they call the Captain’s Quarters. The second bedroom they call the Pirate’s Lounge but functions as an attic. The Castle built of wood and iron, with 23 port-holes, gives the look of a castle or ship with “pirate salvage” overtones. Huge chains hold up the three draw bridge stage/porches, which Michel made. The prow and stern balconies complete the look. There is even a Dragon Door Knocker and a brass mailbox on their front door. Florence has everything the couple needs to live on the road 7 to 9 months out of each year; a kitchen with refrigerator, generator, propane stove, water heater and fire place; a living room with bank seats that are also ice box and dry storage. A blacksmith shop with 380 lb. anvil and lots of antique tooling; an air conditioned computer lab and dressing room with its own laundry chute; an arm crane for loading the motorcycle they use for running. In 2012 Michel added a 20foot Mast and Crows Nest with

9 flag holders, and an antique ship’s wheel that is the windless used to raise and lower the draw bridge roofs. Florence has a Cummings Turbo Diesel Engine that gets 12—16 miles per gallon. The chassis can go to 26,000 lbs. but Florence is weighing in at a svelte 23,000 lbs. The couple has “sailed” more than 60,000 miles in Florence exploring and performing all over the USA. Michel says the castle will never be done. But, in the meantime, he already has plans to make a human powered, kinetic sculpture paddle wheeler. He wants to

run the Yukon River in Alaska. “It’s good to have purpose.” Says Michel now 55, “We should never grow up on the inside, no matter what gravity does to us on the outside.”

here are some tips to help you “pull it off”. Vintage awnings can really set off the overall look of a vintage trailer at a rally. Sometimes vintage trailers come with a vintage awning or maybe even a tent room. If your trailer doesn’t have an awning, not to fear; Marti’s Awnings can make you a custom awning to match your trailer. (See her ad on page 34) Most vintage trailer awnings use an awning rail that is attached to the trailer and an awning that has a cord sewn in to the edge of the fabric that goes along the trailer. The “cord” (rope in older awnings or plastic in newer ones) slides through the awning rail on the trailer; attaching the awning to the trailer. This process is sometimes more difficult than it needs to be. After years of doing this we have come up with a few ideas to make the process easier.

1

The directions on the right say to use an eye bolt but this set-up looks to double as a bottle opener for when your done!

When you arrive at the camp ground and get parked, take a minute to say hello to the campers that are already there. It’s fun to see friends you haven’t seen in a while and if you don’t take a few minutes to say hi, they will - right when you are trying to set-up your awning! Sliding your awning into the rail will work best if the rail is clean and doesn’t have dents. You can clean the channel of your rail with soap and water and a brush when you clean your trailer. Dents can be removed with a tool. The simple tool is hammered through the channel to “spread” the channel and correct dents. At this time, they are hard to find so you can fabricate something or order them off of Ebay. If you are having your trailer painted, insert a cord in the awning rail to “mask off” the inside of the channel. Paint build-up in the rail can slow things down. A dry spray lubricant is also a good idea. Spray a little down the length of the rail to help things move more easily. Two things that help the process most are a foot stool and an extra set of hands. If you forget to bring either one, just ask for help, Trailerites are friendly! (I have also seen “broom sticks” with a hook in one end, to give you extra reach, to help pull the awning through the rail without needing a foot stool.) It typically takes one person to “feed” the awning into the rail and another to pull the awning through the rail. Another approach is to build yourself a pulley system. Shown here (2) with two people. This system will also work with one person feeding the awning in to the rail while pulling on the rope attached to the lead of the awning and fed through the pulley mounted in the rail. To build a pulley system, use an eye bolt (probably 3/8) that fits into your awning rail. Attach a small pulley to it and slide it in to the far end of your rail. (1) Attach a rope either to a grommet sewn in to your awning or use a Homax Tarp Clip (or something similar) to grab the awning. With one or two people, feed the awning into the rail while you pull on the rope that is fed through the pulley and is pulling the awning through the rail. (2) The hard parts done!

2

Set up your poles and use rope tighteners (www.martisawnings.com or a camping supply store) and use springs to stake your awning to the ground. Springs allow the awning to “give” a little in the wind and the tighteners let you adjust the rope’s tension as needed. Once the awning is up you can break out the vintage ice chests and water jugs and enjoy the weekend!

The Latest Heintz & Thompson Family Trailer Adventure! By: Tim Heintz

I couldn’t believe it was the same trailer in the photos! It was ‘THAT’ trailer and I told them how I already had photos of the exterior ! As many of you know I own and operate Heintz Designs Vintage Trailer Restorations and we get to repair, restore, assess, rescue, and see some of the most interesting vintage trailers that surface around the country. You may remember in issue #25 of the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine where we had just delivered the world’s oldest Airstream to a museum in Texas after brokering the sale. Well, we have had another interesting adventure since then but this one actually started over a year ago!

14

About a year ago good TCT (Tin Can Tourist) friends Harvey & Astrid Dunn were driving around where they live and came across a very unique looking vintage trailer. They knew I would enjoy seeing photos of it. They took a few photos from the roadside and sent the images to me. I knew exactly what the trailer was; it was a very cool 1955 Ventoura TWO STORY trailer! Although big, it was meant to travel…. and most of these huge trailers did just that back in the 50’s. Harvey

and Astrid never saw anyone around the trailer and with me being 6 hours away there was little I could do to try and contact the owners of this vacation property. After doing all I could to find the owners, I just forgot about trying to contact them. Even if they were found, the trailer was likely not for sale and would likely not be in the best condition since the actual exterior of the trailer looked neglected.

In Florida our maximum length law to pull a trailer is 40’ long. I knew that Ventoura in 1955 built their two story trailers in 38’, 40’, and 46’ lengths. I also knew that just the 38’ and the 46’ were offered with two bedrooms and the 40’ was the only model that was a three bedroom. www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Fast forward 8-10 months later …. I came to work one Monday morning and found another typical email with someone stating they had an old trailer and wanted to know if it was something that could be sold, parted out, or if it just needed to be scrapped. Many of these emails I get, end up being much newer 1970’s, 80’s or even 90’s trailers that have sat in the woods for a long time. I emailed the person back and they stated they would try to get photos for me the following weekend. When the couple sent the pictures I was shocked to see it was the same trailer that my friends had sent photos of almost a year earlier. I emailed the couple back and told them I could not believe it was ‘THAT’ trailer. I told them how I already had photos of the exterior as friends of mine had spotted it months ago and contacted me! The photos she sent showed that the trailer appeared to be in great condition; water and power were still hooked up and still working! It was a huge trailer and I needed to know just how long it was because here in FL our maximum length law to pull a

trailer is 40’ long. I knew that in 1955 Ventoura built their two story trailers in 38’, 40’, and 46’ lengths. I also knew that just the 38’ and the 46’ were offered with two bedrooms and the 40’ was the only model that was a three bedroom. I asked how many bedrooms it had and they told me it had three. I knew that as far as length laws here in FL it was still within the size limit and that it could be titled as an RV (Travel Trailer) and be street legal. Next, was the weight issue. I dug into my files and found original spec sheets for the Ventoura Company. Although a crazy big looking trailer, these huge trailers in the 50’s were quite light. This 1955 8’x40’ two story model only weighs in an 8,500# with just a 775# front hitch weight. Now there was nothing to really stop me as my truck (2011 F-250 Super Duty) is rated to pull 12,200#. However, I just did not need another trailer, as I already have a vintage 1951 Lighthouse Duplex Two Story Trailer that I have yet to get started on! The more I kept trying to talk myself out of this big trailer, the less I was succeeding! I figured I better come up with plan B, and that is always an easy thing to do with a friend like Tommy Thompson! Tommy and Leanne Thompson are usually always camping next to me at all the TCT rallies! Leanne Thompson actually works for my Restoration Company and Tommy is always at our shop whenever he is not working his real job as a Firefighter/ EMT. If there is ever a trailer I pass on I usually can talk Tommy into it, although Leanne is usually not happy with me! However, this time it was the complete opposite, Leanne wanted this trailer and had visions of it being a great guest house behind their home here

in Panama City, FL. The first thing we needed to do was to actually go and see the trailer in person to make sure it was truly in as good shape as it appeared in the photos. The trailer was in great shape! Yes, it needs quite a bit of work, but it was all there. Only the original fridge and stove were missing. All lights, hardware, and even the two windows (that had been removed for AC) were still in the trailer. The couple told us this trailer was a family trailer. Their great uncle and great aunt originally purchased it in California and traveled with work, towing the trailer for many years. In 1961 he took a job in central FL so they loaded up all their stuff in the trailer and car, hooked up the trailer to the car and the great uncle pulled the trailer all the way cross country from Los Angeles, CA to Floral City, FL with his wife and children riding in the trailer the entire way! Once in Floral City the trailer was jacked up and sat on large pyramid blocks, never tied down, but siting on all the blocks. Thankfully with two floods in the area water only reached within 2” of touching the bottom of the trailer both times! There is also a great story about a HUGE alligator living under the trailer and wildlife officers taking 3 hours to pull the angry gator out from under it! After we looked over the trailer we decided it was in really good shape and was structurally safe for road travel. Tommy and Leanne agreed they wanted

Pulling down that two lane overgrown road was nerve racking, every power line and tree limb looked so low! Although it is a tall trailer at 12’6” tall, it is still a little shorter than a modern semi-truck the trailer! Now, we faced the fun task of prepping for the rescue, getting new tires, rims, etc. Before we left we made sure to spray all the lug bolts and front hitch with penetrating oil, and broke free all the lug bolts so they would all have time to loosen up with the oil before we returned to pull the trailer out from its long resting place.

After doing all I could to find the owners, I just forgot about trying to contact them. Even if they were found, the trailer was likely not for sale and would likely not be in the best condition since the actual exterior of the trailer looked neglected.

We decided to move the trailer over Memorial Day weekend. My parents were able to join us on the trip. It is always an adventure when all 5 of us are together and vintage trailers are involved!

We maintained around 55 MPH on the highways and my truck never felt like it was pulling a big trailer. Averaging 7.8 MPG

Many will argue that this trailer, as well as all huge trailers (house trailers) of the 50’s were not mobile, but they are incorrect. They have trailer brakes, running lights and turn signals. 16

Pulling down that two lane overgrown road was nerve racking, every power line and tree limb looked so low! Although it is a tall trailer at 12’6” tall, it is still a little shorter than a modern semitruck so there really was no chance of hitting anything but that sure did not ease my mind when we were first pulling it! We did hit a few small limbs, but nothing big enough to do any damage. Once we made it to the end of the road we got out and checked the bearings, everything was cool as could be so we decided to pull on another 25 miles to our hotel for the night in Inverness, FL. When we arrived at the hotel, we checked the heat on all the bearings. One was a little warm so we decided to remove all the grease caps, dig out all the old grease that we could and packed as much new grease

as possible. This was much easier to do in the parking lot than it would have been back at the original site. We were also able to get under the trailer and grease all the torsion axle fittings. After that it was time for a good night’s rest at the hotel! The next morning, we were back on the road! You should have seen all the looks we received driving through all the small towns. We decided to stay off the interstate with this trailer since it was so large and I did not have a sway bar on the trailer, just a weight distribution hitch. The trailer pulled great and the more I got use to pulling it, the more comfortable I was to pull at higher speeds. We maintained around 55 MPH on the highways and my truck never felt like it was pulling a big trailer. The trailer is not the best aerodynamic design I have seen, especially with that large forward facing overhang upstairs. I still did a pretty good on fuel averaging 7.8 MPG all the way home. It was a lot of stop and go in all the small towns we went

The trailer was in great shape! It needs quite a bit of work, but it is all there, only the original fridge and stove are missing.

through. Tommy did much better since he was as close as he could get behind me to keep people from getting in-between us. Tommy averaged 30 MPG in his Chevy truck drafting behind that huge two story wall on the back of the Ventoura! Our hopes are to see this trailer back to original. Ventouras were awesome trailers that when new, actually looked like a real 50’s style ranch home! It even had a faux chimney cover for the heater vent on top (see ad on page 15) which was removable for travel and the bricks were painted on the cover as well as down the side of the trailer until it reached the A frame roof line. Many will argue

Virginia City, NV

that this trailer, as well as all huge trailers (house trailers) of the 50’s were not mobile, but they are incorrect. They have trailer brakes, running lights, turn signals, and as the ad states “A real home that travels too”

We started it off with a “Happy Hour” Friday night get together. Saturday evening was a “pre-wedding” social for a couple who got married on the same weekend! We plan to hold the annual rally every June on Fathers Day weekend. See the VCT Magazine calendar for details.

1936 Masterbilt This 1936 Masterbilt underwent a full renovation from the frame up by Flyte Camp of Bend, OR. None of the original components or materials were salvageable besides the frame itself. They used the existing walls, framing and windows as templates to rebuild the trailer to modern standards.

History

Exterior Features

The Masterbilt Corporation, of Los Angeles, CA, went into business building travel trailers in 1934, during the Great Depression, and it is believed remained in business only a few years through 1937. The unique body styling and window design really set the Masterbilt apart from the other trailers of the era. As was the case with many trailers of the 1930’s, the Masterbilt was constructed of Masonite over plywood walls. Masterbilt offered 3 different trailer models: The “Ranger” (13ft.), The “Pioneer” (15ft.) And the “Scout” (17ft). All 3 models had similar styling and layout with the Scout being the highest end model as far as features and materials were concerned. Because of the Masonite construction there are very few Masterbilt trailers in existence today. They are a very iconic trailer and highly desirable to collectors.

The trailer is roughly 19’ long with the tongue. The exterior of the trailer was modified with aluminum siding (originally Masonite was used), the windows were all rebuilt with aluminum exterior skin. The exterior was painted using automotive base and clear with the original pattern and a very classic color scheme. It still has the original front tongue with the original front hitch crank. Even the axle on the trailer is original although it has been completely gone through. The trailer has the original 1936 Kelsey Hayes wire wheels with 3” white wall Coker tires on the trailer for a very classic look. With no room inside there is a heated outside shower on the drivers side exterior wall of the trailer.

Interior Features The interior skin and cabinetry in this trailer was built with ribbon cut Sapele Mahogany. It is absolutely beautiful! It has four coats of Spar Varnish on all of the panels and cabinetry, for a smooth high-gloss finish. The drawers on either side of the bed feature full extension, soft close hardware. The flooring is Marmoelum, and the professional upholstery is 7 thick with piping and button detailing. The vintage stove was painted in a complimentary color with automotive paint and around the stove-top burners and grates high temp ceramic coating was applied. New Mahogany doors dressed up the original icebox. The hardware on the icebox was re-purposed to maintain the look and feel of the 1936 Masterbilt. The original sink and hand pump (which still works) is connected to the fresh water tank. A 12 volt pump was added, along with another water faucet with hot & cold water supplied by a 6 gallon hot water heater. The forward closet was converted into a toilet room with a new porcelain toilet and black water tank. The closet opposite the toilet room holds a new LED TV on a slide out with a DVD player. This one of a kind trailer maintains the look and feel of 1936 but gives you the updated amenities of a trailer built to today’s standards. It is absolutely stunning. This will surely be a show stopper at any event.

Aljoa Travel trailers started in Watts, CA in 1945

under the parent company Modernistic Industries by C.T. McCreary. (The name was later changed to Aljo following a lawsuit by ALCOA (Aluminum Corporation of America) in 1957). A 1955 Aljoa sales pamphlet declares the trailers were “designed for those seeking pleasure and fun!” As owners of Aljoa trailers, Wes and Cindy Nordby and Wayne and Kathy Ferguson must be seeking “pleasure and fun”. The Fergusons and the Nordbys are both owner/builders. Wayne and Kathy have been rebuilding vintage camper trailers since the 1980s and have an incredible eye for original detail and accessories. Their 1955 Aljoa Sportsman Model 16’ is the picture of perfection with its beautiful woodwork and mid-century design. Having spent the first 35 years of its life as a hunting cabin, it

took Wayne and Kathy 18 months to complete its restoration. After building several teardrops, the Norbys moved up in size to their 1954 Aljoa Sportsman Model 15’. The ground up restoration of their Aljoa took a year of part time work to complete. The trailer required extensive work including new siding from Hemet Valley RV. They are now onto their next project, an 18’ Aljoa with a bathroom and shower!

1967 Aloha and 1957 Olson Kurbside www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Brent and Sherrie Mills know how to roll with their 1957 Olson Kurbside step van towing their 1967 Aloha trailer. Sherrie has always had an eye for vintage. When she found the Aloha for sale she didn’t hesitate to call. When they arrived to view the trailer, they found another family already inspecting the Aloha. Thankfully, the other couple

passed on the trailer and the Mills were able to scoop the Aloha up and tow her home. Although Sherrie said the trailer is always a work in progress, they had the Aloha campable within 6 months. Serendipitously, Sherrie was able to locate another Aloha trailer owner who wanted to trade stove colors. Sherrie was able to replace the avocado

She has been in charge of decorating the interior of the trailer and Brent has spent his time polishing and caring for the exterior and doing all of the hidden work that is required on any vintage trailer! In August of 2015, they purchased the Olson Kurbside step van. Brent was able to get the Kubside running and mechanically sound with help from Sherrie- he “stole” the engine from Sherrie’s 1960 Bel Air and put it in the step van. After getting the vehicle up and running, Brent spent hours polishing the aluminum truck body out and detailing it. Now, they have an incredible tow vehicle that doubles as a toy hauler for their vintage motorcycles.

An American retro inspired build from Staffordshire, England.

My name is Kristian Campbell and I come from Stoke on Trent in Staffordshire, England. I am married to my wife Emma who is a nurse and have two sons Jared who is 13 years old and Kian-Sky who is two years old. I am a coach builder by profession and built the Skyla trailer, for personal use to tow behind my 1964 VW Panel Bus as my family grew in size and we needed more living and storage space while traveling, holidaying and enjoying national VW shows. I got my inspiration for the Skyla trailer from my love of the Airstream and Bowlus type trailers because of the uniqueness and retro style, which I feel is in keeping with the vintage VW and Hot-rods. The name Skyla is in memory of our cherished daughter Skyla Louise Campbell, who was sadly born asleep in 2011, and we feel this is a fitting way for her name to live on.

32

I would say it has taken me about 7 months to complete at home in my 30 x 15 ft garage, working on it after work in the evening and on weekends, until I was made redundant a few months ago and was able to work on it full time. Everything you see on the Skyla trailer has been built by myself, from the ground up; chassis, trailer frame all bent and formed by hand, aluminum skin was all hand cut, fitted the windows, made and fitted the external lights, fully insulated and trimmed the interior, built all the cupboards and doors, made the curtains as well as installing the utilities, Zig unit, lights and water system. When I needed any help I always had my right hand man on stand by, my eldest son, Jared! Thanks mate! The interior was inspired by the American Diner theme to catch the vintage era, with the red leatherette upholstery contrasting with the chrome trim and the chequered floor. The blue and white star curtains were inspired by the American flag. It includes a two ring gas burner, 3 way fridge, stainless steel sink and tap with 45 litre fresh wa-

It shows off its different angles and curves from every direction, with a splash of red to the bumper and wheels. The door at the front of the trailer is especially different because it’s not something you see everyday on trailers built in this era. The size is ideal as it is small and light enough to be towed by most vehicles.

Everything you see on the Skyla trailer was built by the owner, from the ground up.

The build had a few minor setbacks and there are things I would do differently if I was to build another one, but overall I am really pleased with the end result. It has only recently been completed and its first outing was at a local VW show called “Dubfreeze” in Staffordshire where we camped overnight in comfort.

The interior was inspired by the American Diner theme to catch the vintage era, with the red leatherette upholstery contrasting with the chrome trim and the chequered floor.

I intend to drive my bus and trailer to Europe this year and visit Turin, Italy where my bus was originally from and was used as a delivery van for the best part of its working life. Thanks to the Skyla trailer I can do that with my family with ease. Since completing the Skyla trailer, I have had a really positive interest in people wanting to buy it, especially on social media where I have posted some photographs. I am hoping to become self employed and make them to sell in the future under the name “Skyla’s Custom Works”.

The exterior speaks for itself, with its shiny aluminum shell lined with 2,300 precise rivets!

The owner/builder, Kristian Campbell sent his story and these photos from Stoke on Trent in Staffordshire, England.

Trailer Fun for Everyone trailer dog house (suitable for any pet). Ray’s career as a general contractor gave him the know how to assemble a sturdy, durable, and yet quite adorable trailer. Alison cares for the books, the advertising and the promotion of these works of art.

Funny thing about life is you never know where you will be in 10 years. You think you have it all figured out and then you find a new and wonderful adventure awaits. Ray and Alison Martinez found love again after a life of creating their families and then enduring the tragedies that some of us face with divorce. They met each other and blended their two families and it was meant to be. Now you don’t find too many moments where this couple stands still.

When you visit the website, you can choose the size you would like, the color accent on the outside and a choice of laminate flooring. Each trailer has a stainless steel water bowl and workable wheels for moving the trailer around. You also have an option to add a custom license plate with your pet’s name and the state you would like. Custom orders are available if needed for a larger dog or if you would like to match your own vintage trailer. The trailers are made out of wood so there are no sharp edges and they are painted with durable gloss paint. In addition, a percentage of your sale is donated to the Humane Society of the United States. Enjoying vintage trailers and the wonderful people that come along with them has been a great enjoyment for Ray and Alison and now passing the “trailer fun” onto their furry family members and to yours has made this adventure even more wonderful. www.happypettrailers.com

After visiting their first vintage trailer rally in California several years ago, they both felt an appreciation for vintage trailers and it all began. Four trailer restorations, and three Spartan Manors later, Alison declared that they needed to keep one as their own. Ray loves to restore the trailers to their original beauty and he continues to restore trailers to this day. They enjoy their travels in their “one of a kind” shortened Spartan Manor. (Featured in Issue # 16 of the VCT Magazine.) Along their way, camping in California and now in Washington State, they have seen how many of their fellow vintage trailer enthusiasts had their beloved, furry companions along with them on their travels. Out of their love for dogs, and all animals, they have created Happy Pet Trailers, the vintage

Manchester Beach Rally California Coast - May 2016

Randy and Char Bonofanti (above) took the role of “host and started a rally at Manchester Beach in California in 2015. The well attended rally sold out again this year at about 40 trailers. They got together for the weekend to enjoy the coastal weather, whadingers and good company. Hosting a rally does not have to be a big deal. This rally, and the Bodega Bay rally (featured in this issue of the VCT Magazine) are both new on the rally calendar. They are on the same weekend, in the same area, and both were filled to capacity and received rave reviews from those that attended. If you are interested in starting a rally pick a date, pick a location and let us know. The Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine will add your rally to the calendar (free) and let 1000’s of trailerites know about your event. If you need help getting a rally going you can always give us a call and we are happy to share how we do it. Pictured Above Right: Faye and Barry Holland (with Elvis) under the candy-cane striped awning of their tiny Shasta. Barry holds a back issue of the VCT Mag. Good rally reading material. The Fourth Annual Fiddlers Picnic Rally Livingston, MT August 5-7, 2016 Pictured above: Candy, Dave and Doc who started the Picnic 42 years ago!

Submitted by Dal Smilie

This event is within a 500 picker jam, The Fiddlers Picnic on the Old Mercier Ranch just South of Livingston, MT. The ranch is right on the Yellowstone River and just a few miles North of the Park.

We had a great vintage camper social hour hosted by Reg and Steve Bittner. Candace and Dave Payne, who host the overall Picnic, hosted the core of the noon potluck the next day and the pickers played on.

The first night was warm and the pickers played till all hours- in and around the barn and ranch garage and all throughout the grounds.

Then, the black clouds moved in, the wind blew and pea sized hail fell! We prayed that larger hail would not drop and it did not. When one

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

is camping in vintage tin you just hate to hear hail. It wouldn’t be a proper Montana Summer event if the weather wasn’t unpredictable. Candy, Dave and several volunteers hosted a great breakfast for all as the raindrops came and went. A little more picking broke out on Sunday as we all sadly broke camp and headed down the road.
