Chairman’s Chat January 2017 Welcome to 2017. I do trust you have had a wonderful festive season and that you are looking forward to 2017 with enthusiasm. We certainly had a great time in the Smylie household, and Kaaren and I are looking forward to a fantastic time in the next few months. We are making great plans for 2017, which we will share with you as time goes by. I believe 2017 will our best year ever. The year for the Club has started with gusto. We had an informal meeting in January with good attendance, and our first run of the year, to “Farming Like Grandad” at Kawerau, was well attended, with 30 odd vehicles participating. It is great to see so many members getting involved in every activity the Club organises. I have also be privy to the planning by our wonderful Club Captain, Kaaren, and with all the activities she has planned, there is some great events coming up for everyone to be involved in. On another important matter; our lease on the land occupied by our Clubrooms, I am pleased to report progress is being made. There was a hic-cup with the negotiations in that the Council believed it owned our building and was insisting this was stipulated in the proposed lease document. Thanks to our honorary solicitor, Peter Butler this was resolved. Peter supplied evidence of ownership of our building acceptable to Council, who have now conceded the building is ours. The latest draft of the lease is currently with Peter, but I believe is in a form close to being acceptable to us. I will report on further progress in the matter as it happens. The lease was taken up originally by the Club in late 2006. My understanding was that at that time it needed a lot of work to get it to a standard where we could occupy it, and that we did not have an official opening until April 2017. Thus, our ten years anniversary of occupation will be in April 2017, and I think this deserves a celebration. Accordingly, the committee will put some thought to how we celebrate. We will keep you posted. Yvonne Allen has for many years looked after the catering for the Club, and what a great job she has done for the Club over that time, catering for suppers after Club nights, and for other special occasions. Yvonne has advised she is wishing to stand down from this role after our next Club night. I wish to take this opportunity to thank Yvonne for all the work she has done for the Club over the years, and also to Ivan who has supported her in this role. I believe no one could have provided better catering services to the Club than Yvonne and Ivan, and certainly not at such a low cost to the Club resulting from all the work Yvonne has done preparing food at her home. Thank you Yvonne!!!! The next issue is to find a replacement for Yvonne. Our most energetic Club Captain, Kaaren, has said she will perform this role in the interim, but we do need someone to volunteer to take on this important role on a permanent basis. So, if you are interested, or know of anyone who maybe good in this role, please let Kaaren and I know. Many thanks. Finally, our AGM is looming, and as our constitution limits a person’s role as chairperson to three years, I must stand down as Chairperson at that time. Accordingly, I ask that you please give some thought as to who you would like as your next chairperson. Happy and safe motoring and hoping I see you soon. Kind regards. Jim Smylie

“2017 The Year of the Rooster”… By Kaaren Smylie The year of the Rooster, the Chinese zodiac sign that boasts punctuality. I know that that particular word describes our members to a ‘T’; a group of like-minded folks who are always punctual for their events. Whilst we may have had many club activities already this year for us to exchange the ever familiar Happy New Year greeting, for those of you members who have been on holiday that we haven’t seen, Season’s Greetings to you all. Especially to all the new members who have recently joined our Club, a very big welcome to you! We must be doing something right as Club members, because our membership is continually growing, long may it continue to do so. Already February and March are shaping up to be very busy months with lots of events on offer for you to select from and attend. Check your recent Klaxon and or on the Club website for further details. I just have to mention a few of the goings-on though… Our Club Night on 13th February - Jim has arranged for another excellent speaker to keep us entertained and give us an informative talk. Two days later Peter Lawn has planned the Mid Week Run for February, guaranteed to be a cracker of a day. (See advert) Girls (and boys) please make a note in your diaries of the quarterly Ladies Luncheon Tuesday 21stFebruary, this time our lovely ‘hostess with the mostess’ is Jan Smith. For our new members these BYO luncheons are a great way to meet other members, just rock on up to Jan & Owen Smiths at 11.30am armed with your choice of food to share, and be prepared for a few laughs and a good old chin wag. (See advert) You may want to make a note in your diaries of a couple of events happening in March: On Saturday 11th March the Greerton Village is running their inaugural Vintage & Retro Fair to raise funds for the Greerton Village School. Briefly our Club and the Interclub/BOP Classic Car Group have been invited to have their cars on display for public viewing; the Council will be closing off the top half of Chadwick Road to traffic, and volunteers from the Lions Club are going to be on duty to make sure everything runs smoothly. This is a day out for the whole family; there will be stalls selling all things vintage and retro, food and drink and there will be retro music continually playing in a ‘Rotunda’ in the grounds of the school. For the grandkids, there will be pony rides and bouncy castles. The public are going to be encouraged to dress up in Vintage or Retro clothing, and prizes will be awarded in the following categories; Public vote for the Best Car Best Dressed Lady

Best Dressed Gentleman and a Window Dressing Competition so the retailers can really get into the swing of the day.

7

The Greerton Village organisers have a large marketing plan in place to really promote this event, and they are confident the day will be as successful as their ‘Yarn Bombing Event’ and the ‘Cherry Blossom Festival’! So guys and gals dust off those threads in your Art Deco wardrobe, and come along dressed to kill. Don’t forget to polish up the auto for display, who knows your pride and joy could be chosen for the People’s Choice Award (See advert) The Club Annual New Members & Nominators Evening will be held on 15thMarch. This is not just for new members and their nominators, but for all our members and supporters of vintage and classic vehicles. A brilliant opportunity and reason to mix and mingle, and be informed and updated on the activities in our vibrant and go ahead Club! Chris Cole your host for the evening always delivers a most superb presentation. Chris will kick off at 7pm and the evening will conclude with a scrumptious supper. Whilst I have now made mention of ‘supper’, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you the Club is currently looking for a keen willing member to take over as the Kitchen Supervisor. After eight dedicated years of running the club kitchen Yvonne Allen our master chef extraordinaire, is finally hanging up her apron and retiring this month. Yvonne on behalf of all the members, I don’t know how to thank you enough for all the tireless hours of work you have dedicated behind the scenes over the years to the BOP VCC, serving up infamous delights from the kitchen to our members , you are going to be a hard act to follow Mrs. Allen. Members, if your birthday falls in the month please remember to make a small contribution and provide a plate for supper. I am sure we must have the odd Aquarian amongst our members who will be celebrating their birthday this month…I have to own up folks I am one of those ‘water carriers’, so I will be bringing along my plate of goodies to contribute towards the supper. The rule of thumb taught to me by my parents was never mention politics or religion in company. However I cannot resist alluding to the transitions that have happened recently on the world political stage some surprises, some not, such as… the big ‘Don’ taking office, Mr. Key stepping down most graciously and Mr. English taking over the reins, and the very capable Helen Clark making the decision to move on. Well member’s food for thought, we have our own elections coming up in June, and to date we have no one in the ‘wings’ wishing to take over when Jim steps down after doing his three years at the ‘controls’. I am sure we must have amongst you all someone who is keen to step up to the challenge. One thing I can confidently tell you though, you will have a great bunch of enthusiastic committee members there to support you. If you’re a keen starter, please get in touch with Jim for a chat about this fun role! Ending with the weather, for some of us summer to date has been a bit sporadic this year in terms of the climate for motoring, but fortunately unlike the weather Gods, the VCC BOP is in good hands with its bountiful club members and our many new members in tow! Au Voir and safe motoring.

Club Captain Kaaren

Hi Folks! I hope you all have a smile on your face and a story to tell about the wonderful Christmas you shared with your family and friends. Okay so you may be a bit more rotund as a result of the food and drink, but you will soon work that off. The New Years’ day picnic organised by Peter Lawn was well attended. Jill and I took our grandchildren to share the experience. Have you noticed all the new members that have joined our special club over the last month or so, Please ensure that you all welcome them into the fold. To the new Members I suggest you stick your chin out and introduce yourself to our longstanding members. Trust me they do not bite. We do not judge you on your vehicle as some clubs do. If you have a smile on your dial you are one of us. This year you can all look forward to another year of events that will tickle your fancy. The Committee is committed to working hard to ensure this comes about. Do not forget in this life “You Reap what you sow!” “That’s all Folks” Joe Scott

Your Klaxon Editor is Paul Beck

Contact Paul at klaxoninfo@gmail.com or 07 5748482 All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi all, After what has seemed like a long time since I put out the last Klaxon I feel very sluggish about getting into gear and letting the handbrake go. Like many other editors, I have enjoyed the break over Christmas but all good things must come to an end.

My computer course is almost underway now with a small class but as many as can be handled with the facilities I have available. So if you are not enrolled then I can only say sorry but!!!!. I am looking forward to it as it will be a challenge for me also. Much preparation has gone into it and much changing of plans and thoughts. However only a bit of fine tuning is now all that is required. I always look forward to hearing from our intrepid travellers namely Alastair and Jim but must not forget those hardy souls that put up with the boys and their toys being Gwen and Kaaren. These people have ventured far and wide lately in their old vehicles covering immense mileages in at times extreme weather. Alastair has then shared their adventures with the club and yet another one is in this Klaxon. I do enjoy reading about them and hope there will be another planned for the future. Thanks Guys and of course Gals. Well done. The end of the month run for January was well attended. The original Pipi Shuffle being replaced by a trip to the Kawerau district for a machinery day visit. We met up with the Eastern BOP club and together put on a great show with a huge variety of cars to feast upon. What a good idea that was from the Smylie's. Well done. Lastly this month we have quite a few new members on board. While our Secretary Joe is full of praise about how well our club is going I would like to extend the praise as far as Joe himself. He works hard to follow up any new applications and makes sure I get notified of changes. This is no casual task as it does involve quite a bit of work and care to get facts right. Thankyou Joe and of course Jill who always seems to be in the background quietly keeping an eye on things to ensure all goes smoothly. Last thing is our Club Library is normally open on Mondays other than holidays. However from time to time Yvonne and myself have an emergency or other things to attend to and cannot make it. If you are coming specially in to the clubrooms please make sure we are going to be there by contacting us first. DO NOT JUST TURN UP and expect us to be there. Our contact is on the cover of Klaxon. A reminder to our run organizers. Please get someone to write a report for the Klaxon. We all like to read about past events but if nobody sends anything in we do not know what happened. Sooooo Pleeeese!!!

NOTICE TO ALL THERE IS NO PHONE AT THE CLUBROOMS. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT NUMBER YOU ARE USING BUT PLEASE REFER TO THE INSIDE FRONT COVER OF KLAXON FOR CONTACTS PAUL 10

The Satnav – A poem by Pam Ayres I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car A Satnav is a driver's friend it tells you where you are. I have a little Satnav, I've had it all my life It's better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife. It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive "It's sixty miles an hour", it says, "You're doing sixty five". It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake And tells me that it's never ever, safe to overtake. It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene. It lists the vehicles just in front, and all those to the rear And taking this into account, it specifies my gear. I'm sure no other driver, has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car, it still gives its advice. It fills me up with counselling, each journey's pretty fraught So why don't I exchange it, and get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I'm properly fed It washes all my shirts and things, and keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages, and my tendency to scoff, I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off. Poem sent in by courtesy Carole Lindsay

2016 Christmas Cheer Run A Glimpse into the future! 34 cars paraded and assembled for our final run of the year through several Retirement Villages in and around Tauranga and Papamoa. This run is designed to bring a little Christmas Cheer to the village residents and perhaps even a small reminder to some what their cars used to be like. Also a reminder to ourselves of a small glimpse into our future. First stop was the Matua Life Care Village on Levers Road. A number of residents were able to chat to our club members about our cars, I’m sure it must have bought back memories of a time passed by.

It was then a drive through Tauranga passing through several other retirement villages on the way to Greenwood Park for our morning tea stop overlooking beautiful lawns and a pond. The complex put on morning tea for the club and the General Manager gave a run down on how the village operated. We were also able to view one of the homes that had been recently renovated. Greenwood Park was one the first villages constructed in the BOP in a very peaceful setting. Thank you Chris and Jenny for giving a reminder of what may be in store in the future!!!! From an over seventy year old.

There has not been a write up for this event so will leave the photos to tell all. Paul

End of the Month Run Farming like Grandad by Paul Beck We joined Eastern BOP VCC attending a machinery day held at Kawerau. We had about 32 cars attend and EBOP club about 20. In combination with the old machinery and a fine day it all added to a great display. In particular I enjoyed the horses pulling the ploughs. While in my childhood I remember seeing farmers with horses and ploughs it was not out of the norm so not much attention was paid to them. But to see it reinacted has brought back some memories.

Thank you Jim for a great day.

15

End of the month run to machinery day entitled Farming Like Grandad So what would a day entitled Farming like Grandad be like without Grandad himself.

The horses and the ride on plough made short work of the task

The girls were out to prove they could do it too! However things were not appearing to go smoothly for them

These old girls however were just happy enough to put on a show.

Farming Like Grandad at Kawerau 29th Jan by Ron Elton With a fine day at last and little wind over 30 cars left Tauranga and headed out east to a “Farming Like Grandad” event at Kawerau. Like us, most vehicles would travel on the relatively new Eastern Link Toll Road with its silky smooth bitumen surface it was very easy to cruise at 50 miles per hour almost without effort. Parts of the other State Highway roads we travelled on were by comparison decidedly lumpy. There was huge array of club cars; six model A’s plus Joe Scott in the AA truck, a Chev Junior and Alan Webb’s 50s Chev Impala (the longest car of the day), a trusty Rover 10, two (or was it 3?) Ford Mercuries about 1946, Zephyr, Rover V8, Riley Elf and Wolseley 1300, Bentley MK VI, the Hill’s stunning Vauxhall of about 1930, our Editors Super Snipe, Triumphs 2000/2.5, a Ford Capri, three MG’s, Kerry and Mary’s Valiant Convertible and the list goes on. Two well kept or restored cars that I had not seen before were a red Graber bodied Alvis open tourer of early 60s vintage and a delightful DKW 3=6. Its small 3 cylinder engine made my 10 horse powered Rover engine look most impressive. The journey of 60 miles on the lightly trafficked roads went without event. We were joined by an equal number of cars from the Eastern Bay of Plenty Club. The Farming Day had Clydesdale horses and ploughing displays, wagon rides, a blacksmith making horse shoes, knitting and wool spinning and sewing displays, tractors galore of all types and sizes (some with very sooty/oily exhaust emissions), a miniature horse not much bigger than a large dog which was very patient with young children, and a few other farm animals. I am not a ploughing judge, but I did observe the ladies team actually ploughed more grass per run than any of the men’s teams on account of their wobbly line. One the way home we detoured to view the latest housing developments at Papamoa East. I now understand why there is so much traffic on the roads. Thanks to Kaaren our busy Club Captain for arranging the day. The year 1919

Reflections

by Paul Beck

1919: was a year for a number of NZ Aviation firsts and also records established. George bolt set a new one day distance record from Auckland to Russell and then later carried the countries first official airmail.

Another pioneer Captain Isilt set an altitude record of 21,000ft in a military aircraft beating the previous record of 10,000ft. There are now 136 tractors in use on NZ farms Newman Coach and Mail Services now 40 years old formed Newman Brothers Coachlines The good roads association called for a national conference to discuss the poor road conditions and how they were having a detrimental effect on the countries economy

Abroad: The first successful Helicopter flight occurred and Allcock and Brown made the first Non stop Trans Atlantic flight

How to do the Cape to Cape by Alastair Jones In response to those who have indicated an interest in following in our tyre tracks, here is the Fools Bible. Firstly you need the obvious, a reliable vehicle with good sized wheels of 16 inch or more and a fuel tank able to manage about 300kms at 50mph average. If you want to set a World Record by being the first in “something” then pick a rarity as it has been done in Model A’s a few times now. The older the better as that is part of the challenge almost goes without saying.

SOME WELLINGTON MEMBERS UP AT SUNRISE TE ARAROA

There is accommodation at Te Araroa but it is very basic, so if you want to get a good night’s sleep, albeit rather short, then Hicks Bay Motels leaves you a 30 kms run to East Cape in the dark. This requires good headlights to dodge the seals sleeping on the road and also the car eating pot-holes and bad bridge approaches. Arising at 4.00am will suffice, but don’t forget to pay your bill the night before because the proprietress won’t appreciate being woken at that ungodly hour.

HOODS UP AND READY TO LEAVE

TOPS OFF AND TIME TO CELEBRATE

A good pair of shoes with nonslip soles to handle the possibility of wet wooden steps and a head-light torch is useful to get up to the lighthouse in time to actually see the sun-rise. Even if the weather is inclement, waiting at the road end for the estimated time for the sun to rise up into clouds or rain is not acceptable.

WELL OLD GIRL WE KNOCKED THE BASTARD OFF

18

With that ritual behind you it is now possible to retrace your route in improving light and wonder how you didn’t come to grief on the narrow road, all the way back to possibly Waihou Bay where there is 24/7 fuel. Breakfast is the thought that will keep you going to Opotiki but bacon and eggs will be hard to find so prepare yourself to a cold sandwich of the same or a hot pie that would horrify your mother. The quickest way to Rotovegas is through Taneatua which by-passes Whakatane, and then it’s a short hop on Hwy 5 until you turn off onto Hwy 30 to connect with Hwy 1 for a short distance until the route through to Whakamaru on Hwy 30 for a late lunch about 1pm, but it will have to be quick. Next way- point is Benneydale before tackling the Waimiha-Ongarue road which may not have improved since we did it. This stretch taken at the required average speed will sort out low exhausts, shock absorbers and spring leaves.

The Forgotten Hwy is not actually that bad but average speeds are hard to maintain so aim for Whangamomona for a very welcome beer at 5pm if the day has been hot. From there things get easier through Stratford and around the mountain until you come to Cape Rd and the lighthouse stands as a welcoming sentinel. Hopefully you will have arrived before about 8.30 pm and will have time to break out something suitable to toast yourself and your trusty old transport before your fatigue befuddled brain calls it quits. It’s still a 20 minute drive to Opunake where all the eating places will probably have closed, but what a day it has been. Trust me, you will find it hard to believe it has all happened in just the one period of daylight. Ps. Pick some good travelling companions, not too many, maybe no more than 4 or 5, and there is a disconcerting lack of cell-phone coverage over a large part of the route. Cheers. A.J.

NZ Seat Belt Laws as at 2013: by Paul Beck From time to time the discussion arises about children travelling in vintage and classic cars and whether they must be restrained. I have copied for interest a section from NZTA website as regarding the law pertaining to seatbelts and children. As regarding the law for seatbelts in our cars NZTA say: Quote: if your vehicle was manufactured before 1990 it may be excluded from many of the standard’s requirements. However your vehicle must still meet the general safety requirement in the Land Transport Rules and must have at least front seat passenger belts if manufactured after 1955. A historic vehicle must meet the safety requirements applying at the time it was manufactured. (It goes further then to contact the Vintage Car Club of NZ to find out more.) Continued next page: 19

The New Zealand child restraint law (as per NZTA) The back seat is the safest place for children under 12 years of age. Never place a rear facing seat in the front with an airbag, serious injury or death could occur in an accident. Only put a forward facing child in the front seat (under the age of 12 years) when the back seat has no spare seats/are all occupied by younger restrained children. Move the passenger seat back as far as possible and restrain the child correctly according to your child's weight and height. If the back seat is available use it at all times. On November 1st, 2013 the New Zealand child restraint law is changing, these changes are listed below: Children under 7 years old

 Must be properly restrained by an approved child restraint.  They must not travel in the car if you can't put them in an approved child restraint. An approved restraint is one that suits their height and weight, as specified on the seat, it can be a harnessed child restraint, a full backed booster seat, or a half booster cushion. A child in a half booster needs sufficient head support behind their head at all times otherwise default to a full backed booster with head support. Children 7 to 8 years old

 Must use a child restraint if available  If there is no child restraint available, the child must use a safety belt if available If there is no safety belt available the child must be in the back seat. Children 8 to 14 years old

 Must use safety belts if available If there is no safety belt available, the child must be in the back seat. People over 14 years old Drivers and passengers must wear safety belts when available. Exemptions to NZ law A child doesn't have to be in an approved child restraint if they're travelling in a:

 vintage vehicle (first registered before 1955) that isn't fitted with safety belts  goods service vehicle (eg, a truck, van or utility) with an unladen weight over 2,000 kg that isn't fitted with safety belts or a passenger service vehicle (eg, taxi, shuttle, bus) that isn't fitted with safety belts. However, where a safety belt is available in any of these vehicles, the child must be restrained, and where an approved child restraint is available, it must be used (accordingly for the child's age and weight).
