chairman’s REPORT// By Steve Donovan
On behalf of the Branch of HBVCC I would like to thank all members, non-members and visitors for your help over the Art Deco weekend. I know that many members do not appreciate how much time goes into this Event. It is still the biggest fund raiser we have. I have received many positive comments and we coped well with the weather. Hosting the Bentley Lagonda Group this year was a mixed bag of people. Some were very entertaining to talk to and when they started talking about the Trips they have done, is amazing.
A special thanks must go to every body who helped with the car rides. I will not mention names for fear of missing somebody out but I am sure our secretary will be sending out thank you notes. As this is my final year as chairman I will also be stepping down from being part of Art Deco weekend. It has been an amazing part of my life with many highs and lows. See you at the next Branch Function Regards.

CLUB CAPTAIN/ secretary REPORT// What a month! We can now breathe a sigh of relief that Art Deco has been done & dusted. Despite the mixed bag of weather I think it is fair to say that it was a success. The first thing we need to do is thank the many volunteers we had who stepped up to the plate and delivered. I won’t try and list names, you all know who you are so a BIG THANK YOU. Across all tasks we had to complete, you all did well and represented the club on the biggest public stage we have, well done. Things started with a fizz on Friday night! Or very nearly without fizz! Until we managed to get the bar open and kicked off the weekend at the Municipal Theatre. Thinks seemed on the up when we headed home, only for the rain to come in and continue through Saturday getting worse as the day wore on. The number of cars that assembled for morning tea was surprisingly high, and as yours truly wandered around with my trusty helpers, the winners of the Sponsors Choice awards were identified. First up was the Best Car Award went to Michael Swanton with his 1937 Vauxhall. Best Dressed Male: Grant Henderson Best Dressed Female: Teri Dean Best Dressed Boy: Daniel Hobbs Best Dressed Girl: Tori Law. As the rain continued the brave souls were dispatched off on the Rally, to link up with the Parade Entrants at Clive Square by 12 noon. The rain failed to dampen the spirits for the Parade and what a great event that seemed to flow very well despite the rain, parking seemed to go better than previous

years and when I pulled in to the i-Site at 1.15pm for car –rides, people were already queued up! The sedans were the popular choice on the day! (Funny that!) But as the rain really set in by 3.45pm there was very few people around! On to the Sunday morning breakfast and despite the sodden start the turnout was right up there. The food was great, service great, supported with some live entertainment. Something for everyone. Even the Spares Dept. were doing a roaring trade! The veterans managed to thrill many with rides down through the Speedway Grounds (our park was way too soft!) – Thanks Guys. A great effort, and perhaps it was your presence that signalled a clear up of the weather. A quick tidy up and we were back to the i-Site for more rides. Strange, sedans were no longer the popular choice, as the sun shone and the open tourers arrived and together with those lovely people in the Silver Ghosts the public experienced rides like never before. A tremendous effort and again a BIG thanks to those who helped. By the days end, we got to look back on another successful Art Deco. (The cold beer was great!) On to the Secretary’s report: I’m relieved Art Deco is finished! But overall not too many issues to deal with. All in all no problems. Our next club run is on the 12th March – refer calendar & ad for details. That’s it from me. 7
FEBRUARY MID-WEEK RUN//
Sixteen cars (including 3 moderns) and over 30 members gathered at the club rooms for the first Wednesday run for the year. The day was cloudy and cooler than we have had over the past few weeks, a nice relief from the heat. Good old Derek had the run sheets organised for a short trip around our area.
Chairs were gathered in the usual circle under the trees, there was debate about the view of the toilet block, some put their backs to it, while others sat facing it waiting for the show to start!!!
We left through Pakowhai into the Twyford area and had a good look at all the seasons crops (pumpkins, onions, apples, etc) growing in there different stages. It was of note that we saw apple trees growing about 16 inches (400mm) apart in there rows on wires, I am led to believe that this is a new system for mechanical harvesting.
A very enjoyable day was had by those who got there old cars out for a wee spin in the country side.
Passing through Fernhill onto Swamp Road we had a few drops of rain, (not enough for the wipers,) we thought we may get some but to no avail. Passing the big Kiwi fruit orchard at Puketapu we crossed the bridge and hung a left into Dartmoor Road and stopped at the Puketapu Domain for our lunch break. March 2017
A couple of the young boys had to have a ride on the flying fox!!
Thanks Derek for getting things going. Cheers Dick Clark.

HOOTERS// Anna @ Hooters Hi Folks, Hope you have now all recovered from the Art Deco Festivities. For those of you that wave off our cruise ship passengers in style, you’ll know just how busy the last 10 days have been with the Art Deco Weekend being right in the middle of a whopping 8 cruise ships in a week! So proud of the Hooters team for their weekend efforts, we had a 10 car convoy on the very wet Friday along with a couple of self drives and two cars working alongside the Art Deco Trust to look after some super yacht guests. The Saturday the Pacific Pearl was in Port and we spent the morning showing a whole heap of visitors around our showroom before heading off in convoy to negotiate the road closures and do a little of the City. Then it was all hands on deck for the Car Parade and I’m not sure the team loved me when they were instructed to take the roof ’s down and show that Hooters spirit. We had our usual table outside Trattoria alla Toscana for the Parade, the same table we have now had for the last 6 years. It’s the perfect spot for our guests to enjoy the parade whilst having an amazing 3 course meal. Although again the whole table braved the rain and refused to go under the awning like sensible people. Nope, we continued to eat, drink and be merry whilst the rain poured.
afternoon and we love working alongside you all, how special is it to be able to ride in such a variety of beautiful vehicles. It really does make some people’s weekend. Although it didn’t stop there, ‘Monte’ the newly acquired Hooters Vintage Bus was running guests all round the City till 11pm while the rest of the team were furiously trying to dry out the cars ready to do it all again on Sunday. Sunday was a much more relaxed affair with and the sun deciding to join us again and the morning disappeared as we tried to prep for the next three days of cruise ships starting at 8:30am the very next morning, before rushing out again for more donation rides at least this time in the sun. The Bentley’s & Lagonda crew, it was a pleasure to join them for the weekend, see some old friends and make some new and of course help out where we could. There was the usual flat batteries sourcing of parts and yes bugging our mechanic to come and save the day. Great to see everybody chipping in showing our guests just why the Hooters teamed moved to New Zealand. There was certainly a lot of comments of ‘I could live here’ and ‘Should of moved here years ago’ Funny, how nobody asked if we’d consider moving back to the UK.
Thank you to all of you that braved the rain and joined the car parade, wasn’t it humbling to see the amount of people that still came to see the amazing array of vehicles.
The Month of March brings us more cruise ships and the conference season starts to kick in. April sees our final couple of cruise ships for the season and the last race in the ‘Hooters Vintage Race Series 2016/2017’ If any of you would still like to get your entries in for 8th/9th April then please check out http://www. motorsportentry.com to sign up.
Then it was the donation rides, always a fun
Be Seeing you.

ART DECO Weekend 2017// Well Art Deco is over for another year but this one sure was different. On Friday morning it was raining!!!! Yes we needed the rain desperately but not on this weekend. By 4.00pm the rain stopped and it cleared for the evening. Great, it is looking quite good. For those arriving for the HBVCC Grand Opening event in the Pan Pac foyer in all their Art Deco outfits it was perfect. The night was entertaining with Ian Elmsly our Club Captain/Secretary as MC, who got the ball rolling welcoming everyone and proceeded with the programme. A few words from the Sponsor Eurocity were followed by Tony Haycock and Cedric Cook representing the Bentley group all the way from the UK, describing their experiences travelling around NZ before arriving in Napier for the Art Deco parade. We also had a large group from all over NZ with their MG’s participating in the events of the weekend. Next up were the ladies of the Hawkes Bay Chorus who performed with their beautiful harmonising voices. Leading on from this was the Elegant Ladies Contest, compared by John Cocking aka “Bertie” and Judged by Lee-Anne Freeman from Charleston Chic with her able assistants. 12 Ladies paraded onto the Stage in all their wonderful art deco outfits showing the audience how glamorous they all were. While the judges debated who will take the
title of best outfit we were entertained by the Encore Dances from Born to Move group. And Dance they did! The judge’s choice for winner of the Elegant Ladies was announced and that was Margaret Provan from Christchurch, winning a plaque and a $200 Voucher from Charleston Chic, with the Runner up Mercia Paaymans from Hastings. Congratulations ladies and well done for getting up on stage. Saturday morning dawned and the rain was falling. Everyone arrived for morning tea provided by the Taradale School mums, great as always. Luckily we had 2 large gazebos for people to shelter from the rain. Some cars set off on the rally while others headed off to assemble for the Parade by Clive Square. The crowds were not put off by the rain and lined Emerson Street to wave and clap the beautiful cars that make Art Deco Festival special. Car rides where busy despite the rain still

CONT. ART DECO Weekend 2017//
» Cars lined up for Car rides on Marine Parade falling but by 3.30pm the rain got heavier and it was time to pack up. Sunday Morning it cleared to become a very beautiful day. And what better way to start the day with a hearty Breakfast, of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages and baked beans, Yummy!! The team did well to serve around 180 servings. WELL DONE! Everyone was entertained by the Twin City Stompers and also the Napier Piped Band who are always great to listen too. Rides were given by Veteran cars around the speedway area as the club grounds were very soft after the rain. Thanks to all for making the morning fun!
» Tom White and his Model T giving rides March 2017
On Sunday afternoon on Marine Parade the people were queued waiting for car rides. It was full on from 1.30pm to 4.15pm. With the sun out and warm temperatures, the masses wanted open cars of course. With the help of extra open top cars including 3 silver ghosts, they got rides that they would never have dreamed of. It was a great success and great exposure for the club. A BIG THANK YOU to all that were involved over the 2 days. To all the visitors and local club members we hope you had a great weekend. Yours Truly – Editor.

beaded wheels article// By Bryce Strong - Bay of Plenty VCC Extract from Beaded Wheels Magazine February/ March edition. In late November we completed our first of the summer wine run from Tauranga to Napier via Taupo, Turangi, Taihape, and across the Gentle Annie road to Napier with 27 members in 15 cars taking part. Places of interest to visited included the opening Aratiatia Rapids, the farm of Artist Murray Matuscha, the Memorial to the Tangiwai disaster and the Waiouru Military Museum.
pic of the month// A little bit of sun to enjoy those car rides...
March 2017
After lunch in Taihape we departed for Napier over the Gentle Annie road – an interesting road which must have been a challenge when unsealed. A highlight was our evening at the Hawke’s Bay Branch where we received a warm welcome. On day three we visited the Faraday Centre and the British Car Museum, and another highlight, Steve Trott’s extensive and very interesting range of Memorabilia, a 1935 Supercharged Auburn, a 1941 Cadillac, and a 1936 Packard – all in immaculate restored condition.
