chairman’s REPORT// By Steve Donovan

How was your Christmas and New Year. Hopefully you had time with family and friends or had a few days away. It has been a busy time in our house with finding time to work on the project car and time spent with family. I know it has been a sad time for many with a couple of our members and wife having passed away. It was sad to go to Dick Goodall’s funeral but I thought it was very fitting for his Son to thank everybody for coming and celebrating his life but please come and pick up junk you have left at Dick’s place. This brings up a very interesting point as to what will happen to our valuable collections ( to us any way ) My family will only put it in the scrap bin. The last couple of weeks we have had some great outings. I finally realised a long held wish to have cars in Holt’s Bush Tutira. I helped to organize lunch for a group of Early Ford V8’s last Friday. It was magnificent to have the cars under the trees and the amount of locals who never knew the forest existed was amazing. It was a trial run for when we host the Bentley Tour at Art Deco weekend. This will be there farewell to Hawkes Bay on the Monday. The Visit by Cruise Ship Ovation of the Sea gave us a grand opportunity to display 50 pre 1945 cars. Feedback from the Port and public has been great. Port of Napier donation was also very generous. Thanks to Helen Ball for her assistance with this project and all members who were able to attend.

February 2017

Last Saturday we hosted the Early Ford V8 Nationals for Breakfast (120 people) Thanks to the Kitchen staff for working real hard and once again putting on a fantastic Breakfast. Once again this was a successful Fundraiser for your Branch. Thanks to Malcolm Blair for coordinating the Breakfast. Thanks to the Marineland Rod and Custom Club for the loan of the BBQ. Our first run of the month was a very pleasant outing and a report is in this Mag Art Deco Event 2017 is getting very close now and most things are in place. It has been a pleasure to work with the new Events Director Glen Pickering and hopefully we have the parking sorted for Saturday. Please read the instructions as we will get quite hot under the collar if you are not happy with what is set out for you and have not read the instructions in the Rally Pack. Hopefully by now if you indicated you can help over the weekend you have been contacted and allocated a Job. If not please contact me or any of the Committee ASAP so we can allocate you a job. Open cars for car rides on Saturday and Sunday afternoon are a big requirement. Can you help for maybe an hour with your open car??. It would be a great help and it does contribute to our Branch funds. Contact Steve Trott if you can help. So that’s it for me. All the best for the month and if I do not see you before maybe we will meet at Art deco weekend and you will have a High Vis Coat on.

CLUB CAPTAIN/ secretary REPORT// Well here we are again folks, another year is upon us and I hope the Christmas break was kind to you all. January has been quiet for me in terms of Club stuff (other than emails & phone calls) as I have been away from the Club and its meeting & runs, so can’t really comment on those. So with the arrival of a new year it may be appropriate to offer a few thought provoking comments to the great membership mass –yes that’s all you members out there both active and not so active, it is time to put on your thinking caps and accept a challenge. So, first up, I refer you to Page 17 of the December MAG. Have a read of “Do Statistics Matter? Does Age Matter?” This article was written by a club member on Safari (not me!) and highlights what we have all been thinking and some saying for quite a few years. Second up, refer Beaded Wheels December /January, page 10 “Soapbox”. Have a read of this article. –Yes I know I am getting you to tax you concentration here but bear with!! The underlying message here is that we are all getting older, and unlike our cars may not always function like we used to (bugger!)The average age of membership is going up, membership numbers are struggling to maintain current levels and if we are not careful, our cars will disappear from the roads completely and

By Ian Elmsly

be lost forever. Picture your club rooms in ten years’ time –long grass, cobwebs everywhere, broken windows and people asking who used to have that building?? Not a pleasant thought even if I exaggerate a little. We have the power to address this, and here’s where you come in. Now, if your family (kids) don’t have any interest in your car and the grandees are too little or disinterested as well, find a friend! Perhaps a neighbour, or nephew or niece that show some interest in the car, take them for a ride, teach them how to drive it, bring them to a meeting, sign them up!! You don’t necessarily need a car to be a member and perhaps if they show real interest they might be where your car can eventually find a new home (when you can no longer drive) and be kept going into the future. So fellow members: I challenge you to find a friend (potential new member) under the age of 60 years and bring them to a meeting before June 2017. I want ten newbie’s before 30th June 2017. Take up the challenge and let’s keep our club moving into the future. Good luck and get to it! Crickey, that took some writing! Are you still awake out there??

SUNDAY CLUB RUN// Sunday the 15th was another hot Hawke’s Bay day, when 17 members gathered at the club rooms for the first club run of 2017.

and joined us for the nice drive up to the Maraetotara Plateau for our lunch stop at the reserve by the local golf course.

A lot of jovial discussions about the Christmas and New Year break amongst those present and the American political scene, which we sorted in no time at all!!!!

We all gathered in the picnic shelter for our sammies and coffee, the lunch discussions were more varied than the vehicles as Steve reckons that the Triumphs were breeding!!! Go Triumphs!!!

Steve handed out the run sheets for a easy trip to Mohi Bush Reserve, we went via Tukituki Valley Road and to veer left into Waimarama Road onto Maraetotara Road, a couple of members missed the veer bit and carried on the Elesthrope Road for a wee way, doing a ‘uie’ in a cockies gate way, they soon caught up to the rest of us,

February 2017

A good run was had by all and thanks to Steve for getting the trip organised. Cheers, Dick Clark P.S. Thanks to Derek for setting out the club run but was unable to attend on the day.

SHOES, SHOES & MORE SHOES//

Supplied by Lee-Anne Freeman

Let's start with the brogue. It originated from Scotland and Ireland. It is an ideal Deco shoe. Versatile for men and women. The word brogue also describes an Oxford which is punched and stitched in the same manner.

The heel which was produced with this style of shoe is called a Louix heel which is shaped like a toilet bowl. Also popular was the Cuban heel manufactured with the simple style court shoe.

The American name it is known by, corespondent, spectator and Two-tone shoe(usually black and white or brown and white) worn initially for casual attire. It was popular in the 1920-30s.

Tip...... Always try both feet in a new pair of shoes as most people have different size left and right feet. You may need to reconsider the size your purchasing. It is sensible to take with you a second pair of shoes to change into during a long hot day over your Deco festival weekend. Your feet will thank you.

A favourite women's shoe is the T-bar/strap or Mary Jane shoe. The strap has a metal buckle closure. Ideal for dancing as it won't fly off your feet when dancing the energetic CHARLESTON or Black Bottom.

HOOTERS// Anna @ Hooters Hi Folks, Wow, where has January gone! The Art Deco Festival is fast approaching and the summer sun has certainly blessed Napier once again this year. We have been flat out with weddings, events, tours and of course our up-coming Festivities. I’m sure it’s a busy month for us all and we look forward to helping the club show off our finest and raise a little money for the funds again this year.

was studying for my exams at the time. Needless to say, the party continued regardless!

So this month I did promise to cover the number one question: ‘Why the name?’

As dad describes: “We found an article in an old Vogue book describing vintage American cars, one using the line ‘with their loud Hooters’ and that was it! The following day whilst sobering up, we did a little research and checked to see if we could get sued by a well known restaurant chain in the US and Hooters was born. I would like a dollar for every person who asks if we knew there was a booby bar in the US with the same name”

Hooters Vintage & Classic Vehicle Hire.

The ‘Real’ History

As we have covered previously the company really started by accident with a family collection and an ever growing list of friends and family that wanted us to supply cars for weddings and events. One such wedding ended up the main feature in a wedding magazine and this was the driving force behind us deciding to make this into a legit business. This was quite unheard of with cars such as these back then but the feedback from the magazine had been amazing, so why not indeed. From the article alone we received numerous requests from film companies and ad agencies!

For those of you still confused by our name: Back in England in 1929 there was a company called ‘Clear Hooters’ with an address of Hooterland, Birmingham that made car horns. They also had what they thought was a rather unique logo (See below pic) The restaurant name in the US first opened in 1983. Coincidence?????

Then came the question of what to call the new venture. The ‘Parentage’ had always enjoyed a good dinner party so the troop got together for one of mum’s famous dinners and a few drinks to discuss. Therefore during a rather boozey dinner the subject was brought up and the vintage magazines, books and yet more wine started the conversation flowing. I too remember the night well, although I was far too young to partake in the drinking my presence was certainly felt by my many visits into our huge kitchen to ask the rather loud group to ‘keep the noise down’ as I

Let’s just say, I don’t think they’ll be chasing us anytime soon. We are even followed on our social media by some of the restaurant chains themselves so luckily most people see the funny side and let’s face it, if you have a problem with our business name, your probably not the ideal Hooters clientele :-) I hope you all have a great Art Deco Festival and we look forward to giving you a good ‘Hoot’ on passing. Be Seeing You. 11

HBVCC 2017 ART DECO EVENTS// Wow!!!!!!! What an amazing response to Art Deco 2017 events being held by the Hawke’s Bay Vintage Car Club. Entries are now closed. To those who are participating in the varied events we look forward to seeing you all from 17th to 19th February 2017 So keep those engines running and those polishing cloths handy for a fun weekend!! Look forward to seeing you all there.

Sponsorship for art deco 2017 Presenting a cheque for $5000 on behalf of Eurocity Napier is Ian Elmsly to Chairman Steve Donovan and Steve Trott. Without such support the clubs ability to participate at the level we do would be very difficult, and it is incredibly generous of Eurocity to provide such support and display such confidence in your club.

STANDING OVATION// By Helen Ball

A huge amount of planning and organising went into the visit of Royal Caribbeans “Ovation of the Seas” first visit to Napier.

Take a bow everyone who got up at the crack of dawn to take part in this amazing event and making this ship visit so special.

The Vintage Car Clubs part in the exercise , right from Steve Donovan & myself meeting with the ports Operations Manager, through to the ringing and getting details for port security, went fairly smoothly. The port organised an area on Breakwater Road from 6:30am for cars to assemble and then be escorted, groups of 5—10 at a time to the allocated parking area on wharf 2. Security was tight and cars were checked against a master sheet and ID shown before entering.

A special thanks to Derek Naylor for sending the photos to Esther.

Facebook comments on the amazing stop-over.

Once parked we lined up in front of the vehicles and watched in awe as this 18 story monster was guided, seemingly effortlessly, stern first into place. As much as we enjoyed seeing the ship dock, there was also a very enthusiastic crowd on ship waving and watching from various vantage points. It did not take long before the steady stream of passengers were heading to tour buses or the shuttles, with many taking time to wander around our fantastic 50 car display and chat to deco attired drivers. Fine weather and this surprise welcome had passengers grinning from ear to ear. A great number of them, along with the ships Captain were visiting Napier for the first time . Captain Loy and the shipping agent were incredibly impressed with the cars, and I have since been told they consider Napier the best port visit in New Zealand . 17
