Update of the tour which is happening in 2 weeks time!! – I have now received all the info which has put the tour into perspective. This is included in this newsletter also. There are 43 entrants all of which are 100 years old or more. This should make all members get out just and view them while they are in our area. There are many familiar names in the group and quite a few were in the 60 year celebration tour in 1977!! Is it really that long ago!! Our club are providing lunch for the group on Monday 30th January. I have made up a simple but tasty menu and I am still looking for ladies to help in the kitchen for around 3 hours please – from 10am – 1pm. The food preparation is minimal. The men will be required to keep a watch over the entrants‟ vehicles while the participants have lunch. Please park your vehicles in the paddock and away from the clubrooms. The entrants‟ vehicles will be on the lawn and around the Homestead so good photo shots can be made. It will make an impressive sight!! Please let me know asap if you can help – Phone 438 8091. My thanks to all who have offered their help, but another 3 or 4 would be great

Motorcycle report 8th January run What a cracking day for a ride after all the hot muggy days we have had over the festive season. This was one of the two longer runs that we have during the year but a little disappointing for the number of bikes that turned out, maybe an indication that a number are still away on holiday. Nine bikes turned out four of them being modern including Johns new acquisition from America a 1984 Honda CX 500 turbo. It was also good to see Robert and Lorraine back on their Matchless G80 which had been out of operation since the Rubber Duckie in September, due to broken dynamo chain and primary drive chain in the chain case. We were going to start promptly at 11am but after a briefing two bikers decided that a top up of their gas tanks was called for. We eventually got underway and headed to Oakleigh turning off onto the Paparoa Road. At Paparoa we turned left onto SH12 and proceeded onto the Brynderwyn junction, after a sort stretch of a busy SH1 we turned onto Baldrock Road and proceeded out toward Mangawhai. One biker & pillion passenger decided they liked the company of the traffic on a busy SH1 and proceeded on to Kaiwaka before realizing their errant ways, retraced their tracks and eventually caught up. Despite the holiday crowd and traffic in Mangawhai village a very relaxing lunch was had at the old hotel which surprisingly was not overly busy. We left for our return journey at about 2pm and after passing through Mangawhai Heads we turned right onto the Waipu Cove Road. After an eventful trip to Waipu we managed to cross a chaotic SH1 onto Rosyth Road and the tranquillity of a rural countryside. Unfortunately this was short lived as we had to re-join the throng at Ruakaka and make our way back to Whangarei on SH1 with half of Northland heading home at the same time. 124 miles in total for the day. From the comments I‟ve received everyone enjoyed the ride, some even suggesting we hold our annual rally on the same route. We‟ll see! What‟s coming up? The 25th National VCC rally is fast approaching and late entries will have closed by publication time. We appear to be well represented with local entries and it should be a great event. Several one make rallies will be held around the country following this. The Mooloo Rally – Hamilton is on the 8th April Whangarei Rally 20th May Keep the rubber to the road Lofty

Far north v.c.c 15th autospectacular 2017

Press Release - 15 January 2017 The 2017 Autospectacular, held at the Eastern Rugby Football club grounds in Taipa on Saturday 7 January was another successful event for the Far North Vintage Car Club and the various teams of members putting together a day of family fun for everyone who attended. This year‟s theme was “The Need for Speed” and even though the 3 vehicles who tied for the Best in Show were perhaps of a more dignified age, there were certainly many vehicles displayed that fitted the criteria admirably. Best in Show - People‟s Choice P Johnson 1956 Bel Air H Compter 1909 Motobloc Type O G Bourne 1967 Ford Over 230 vintage, classic and high performance vehicles, motor cycles and commercials were displayed on another brilliant Far North day, attracting many admirers of all ages. There was a new section this year, and the inaugural trophy for the Best Club display went to the Bay of Islands Classic and Sports Car Club for their outstanding collection of prestige vehicles, with the Far North VW Fun Club runner up. The sound of thunder from the Road and Sport Harley Davidson Drag bike was a good draw when it was fired up. The most popular motorcycle was an extremely well illuminated 2003 PX Vespa, and the runner up a 1924 BSA, which truly reflected the diversity of the show machines! Mangonui Haulage‟s “Western Star” won the commercial section and it is always satisfying to see the public admiring the huge vehicles that ply our roads on a daily basis. The club is extremely grateful to its many sponsors, without whom the Autospectacular would not be possible. The Fire Service, St Johns, Mangonui Lions are all recipients of proceeds from this event. A wide variety of stalls from art and craft, plants, auto parts and all things vehicle related - food and coffee included, kept the large crowd happy, and the usual attractions for children well received by the younger set. The Police Dog Handlers in Northland put on an impressive display of „dog power‟ which had everyone enthralled at their training and prowess. The 16th Autospectacular is set for Saturday 6 January 2018 and the FNVCC looks forward to hosting another great event!

CENTENNIAL OF THE 1917 PARLIAMENTARY TOUR

The tour starts from Devonport at 8.00 am on Sunday 29th January 2017 and finishes at Auckland Town hall on Sunday 5th of February with a civic reception. Forty-three cars over one hundred years old have entered. The cars have come from all over New Zealand, and one each from the States and Australia. Members of Parliament will again be present. Many of the cars will be driven to the start, coming from Alexandra, Nelson, Wellington, Palmerston North, Whakatane, Hamilton and Tauranga. The oldest cars to start will be single cylinder 1904 Cadillac recently imported from Australia, entered by Doug Hamilton of Wellsford, and the I904 twin cylinder Darracq entered by David Porter. The largest car to start will be a 17 litre 1917 Le France, recently imported from the States and entered by Craig Marshall on his first Vintage Car Club tour. A number of cars entered have not been seen for many years. John Duncan has entered a 1911 Mitchell that has not appeared on a Vintage Car Club run since 1958. Dale Conlon has entered a 1912 New Pick that is a recent restoration on its first run, and will be driven up from Nelson. John Callesen from Palmerston North is starting in a Dodge Brothers car, that will be driven up from Wellington, and on its first run in eighty years. Graham Power has entered a 1917 Studebaker that has not been on the road for many years. Len Woodgate just got the Briscoe back on the road and tells us he is starting on the tour. From the States we will see will see Robert Lederer in a 1911 Stoddard Dayton. There are ten Model T Fords entered. One of these is Monty Scarborough starting in his “T for two” and is one of two cars that was on the first re-enactment of this tour organised by the HCCA in 1977. John Poole will be there with his recently purchased 1917 Oakland from Bluff and Jim Boag will be there in his recently purchased 1914 Humber from Wellington. Wheel wright Vern Jenson from Fielding will be on the tour in his 1909 twin cylinder Buick that was imported from the States. John Jullian is starting in a 1913 Wolseley from Central Otago. Laurie Cocker from Palmerston North will be there in his 1907 Cadillac. He has driven 90,000 miles in the small van. Tim Edney will start in a 1912 Minerva he purchased from Martin Ferner in Wellington about twelve months ago, and it‟s very similar to car Mr Rogers had on the run in 1917, that has been featured, stuck in the mud in so many photos. Four Dodge Brothers cars are starting, the same number as they had on the original run. Adrian Garrett will join us in the north with his 1907 Rolls Royce that he has owned since 1952, and driven on tours all over the world. Two years ago Adrian and Sylvia had the car in Ireland. It is too late to enter the event but if you would like to see the cars at the Museum on Monday 30th of January you are most welcome. Barry Birchall.
