COVER Great to see Penny Stevenson arrive in the SS2 Roadster to “show the flag” as it were after Russells sudden passing back in October. Russell spent several years rebuilding this car to a very high standard which is understandable knowing the perfectionist he was. The SS2 is a rare car built in the early to mid 1930s by William Lyon of the Swallow Sidecar Company( later to become Sir William Lyon of Jaguar fame). He never admitted that the SS stood for Swallow Sidecar Co. The SS was powered by a 1092cc 9 H.P. Standard side valve engine not a performance car by any means, so its hard to believe that it was the forerunner to the Jaguar marquee formed towards the end of the 2nd world war as the SS insignia was certainly not appreciated due to the Nazi SS regime. The sporty design of the SS certainly shows the Jaguar heritage. EDITOR BILL

Swapmeet Chairmans Report. Only 2 months to go. The site sales are coming at a steady rate .The committee has met several times and all is falling into shape. Have talked with the camp manager and he is only to willing to help in any way. The Timaru District Council met with the various groups that use the Winchester Domain and is willing to replace the existing fence along side highway 1 with a deer fence at a small cost to the main users, a very satisfactory conclusion. Next months Tricar I will put in the schedule for the working bees. Thats for now. Regards John Knowles Chairman Swapmeet

CHAIRMANS REPORT Hi, everyone. I am writing this after the Night Trial and before our Open Day. I am hoping that you all had an enjoyable Christmas and that 2017 is prosperous for you! Since I last wrote we have been involved in supporting St Marys Church and the South Canterbury Museum in a very interesting Open Day to celebrate 50 years of the Museum. The event was very well run and had lots of interesting things going on. We climbed up the Church Spire, and Timaru looked flat! Thanks to those people who supported this occasion by bringing their vehicles especially Jim Geddes who brought out the Tricar. We have also been in the Fairlie Parade, the Ladies Rally and the Night Trial. New Years Day at Fairlie was very enjoyable, with lovely fine weather and lots of vintage and classic cars. After lunch under the Domain trees, it was off to the parade and hope that your car does not boil (some did). Graeme Taylor was awarded the rosebowl for turning out in his 1928 Whippet Roadster Coupe. Congratulations Graeme! Next came an enjoyable Ladies Rally. It was very well run by Carolyn and Robert Gibson. .The results are elsewhere in this magazine. Thank you Carolyn and Robert. The Night Trial has been and gone. It was an interesting run, some on seal and some on good gravel roads. There is a report on this elsewhere in this magazine also. Thanks to Kevin and Nadia Manchester for your efforts in setting out a different route and trying to sort us out with tricky questions! The Haast Tour is coming up for some of us. And we are hoping for some fine weather. I am told that there are 56 entrants. So, the planning for this trip was worthwhile. The Chairmans Rally on 19 February will be an organised run to Waimate to see how our tree at Bush Town is growing. They would like each one of us to donate a gold coin towards their cause.

BEREAVMENT Sad to see that Barry Lovegrove passed away last week. Barry was a long term enthusatic and supportive member of the VCC,joining back in 1970. He worked on Model T and Model A Fords, the latter he motored for several years, but his motoring interest more recently were BMC products, he restored several Morris Minor 1000s etc and was know for building a convertible Mini. All the above done to a very high standard. He was a regular on the Wednesday Parts Dept team, his motoring knowledge valued for identifying what parts fitted what etc. Our sympathies to Anne and family.

Excellent

turn out of members and vehicles for Barry Lovegrove’s Memorial service.

NOTES FROM THE LIBRARY

By Barry Barnes

A small surprise awaited me at my last visit to the Library. A small pile of books from no obvious source. The books concerned were: Mustang Buyers Guide. This gives a great deal of detail on the various changes made between models and the many options available. It would be of great assistance in accurately restoring a Mustang or working out whether all the bits in one’s car are correct. Mustang-The classic American Sportscar by Bill Reynolds, nicely produced with great pictures, Thunderbird – Illustrated History of the Ford T-Bird by Ray Miller. This comprehensive history covers the period 1954 – 1966 in great detail. The above are really good resource information for fans of the blue oval. Other books were Visual Dictionary of Cars, Encyclopedia of American Cars by David Vivian covering cars up to 1993 The Automobile – The First Century All these are quality books and while I was processing them I noticed a clue as to their origin. One book had originally been owned by a resident of Victoria British Columbia, and the next owner was Maurice Skiffington, who was a Branch member until his return to Canada a little while ago taking with him his Mercury Cougar that originally brought out from Canada when he moved to New Zealand a few years ago. It turns out that when he went back to Canada, Maurice left a number of books with Ashley Milliken to dispose of with the proceeds to go to Rotary. While Ashley had moved some books these ones were still gathering dust so we became the fortunate beneficiaries. Thanks to Ashley and Maurice. ——————————————————-

“BEHIND THE HEDGE While working around the district recently on silage harvesting, its surprising what is seen behind the hedge etc. This Bedford is approx 1952-54 OLB Model which was the first of the heavier rated Bedfords of the era being capable of 6-7 ton payload. They were recognisable by their shorter bonnet (semi cabover) the engine coming partly into the cab. The transport industry bought this model in big numbers, Porters Motors based in lower Otipua Road Timaru had a fleet of them and collected milk in the milk can days from our farm with them. ( This company later became Goulds Transport then Mt Cook Co) Editor Bill

Brent Birchfield from Port FM was most impressed with Darren Ladbrook’s Dodge being in “straight out of the barn” and just being motored.

. Terence Irving’s Model A at the Open Day, complete with tow rope (every Ford needs one)

OPEN DAY at CLUBROOMS The Club Open Day was very well supported by members putting their vehicles on show. A steady flow of the public continued through out the day. A sausage sizzle was popular, Neil Manchester proving to be a “Masterchef” at the job. Thanks to all who contributed to the success of the day.

New Years Parade at Fairlie – by Shannon Stevenson With a blast of fireworks at Caroline Bay – slept though by several of our members – 2017 had arrived. With sun blazing down and engine bays hot enough to roast a wrapped meal, it was a trek for many to Fairlie for the Annual New Years Day parade. For myself, a last minute change of spark plugs had the Escort on Terra Firma in full flight, only slowed by tourist campervans. With a fair few happy campers with their tents and caravans already set for the summer in the Domain, around 25 of our older vehicles found spaces in between to set up picnic. With lunches, home cooked, car cooked or bought from the Fairlie shops, much time was spent in discussion – a few vehicles and members having also visited from other branches. At just after 1:00pm it was time to hit the road, with most heading to the Fairlie Heritage Museum to line up for the parade. While crowds were less than previous years, there were a fair selection of machinery hitting the main street over the next hour, covering most eras of the 20th century – the slowest pre-war tractors and an 'environmentally friendly' mobility scooter, the fastest several muscle cars – all with powerful V8 engines out front. There were a few intriguing scenes amongst our members too – examples including Nola Day being 'chaffeured' in the spacious rear seat of the Day's 1926 Dodge, the Washington's 'well travelled' Chrysler roadster, Grant Mehrtens' 1959 Skyliner's hood up to let air through, and several of our vintages with all seats taken with eager supporters. With the parade over, it was to the village green where the public could view our vehicles on show close up, with music performances happening on the railway carriage in front. The Rosebowl trophy for this year went to Graham Taylor, for his 1928 Whippet roadster. Shannon Stevenson

New Years Day , It happens every New Years Day, stoppages on the way to Fairlie, normally due to overheating as it is usually a hot nor-west day, however this time the Barne’s Studebaker cut out completely. Several members stopped to help with plenty of advise, “non of it practical”, however the resourceful Barry found the ignition points had collapsed and of course had a spare set under the seat, probably been there 30yrs or more!. The car was up and running in no time at all, no thanks to us onlookers. The Geraldine contingent at Fairlie, Graham Rae’s Model T and Helen Cholmondeley’s Bradford Truck with Alan Averis as co-pilot.

Winner of the Rosebowl for a new restoration at the Fairlie New Years Day Parade went this year to “GT, Graham Taylor who together with a mate has restored this 1928 Whippet Roadster. While not completely finished it is roadworthy and a lovely looking vehicle.
