Chairman’s Report It’s a timely reminder to make sure all your garages and storage sheds are securely locked and check them regularly as we have just been advised that a non-member who is not from our Taranaki area had his storage unit broken into and had many car parts stolen and the real sad thing is that these parts were ripped off complete cars causing considerable damage by, for example, damaging the radiator and outer panel, grinder cut in radiator surround ,door hinges cut off and broken, damaged paint on guards with fabric damage because of grinding. The cars were a 1927 Studebaker Erskine and two Ford Model A sedans. Stolen parts were removed from the cars including bumpers, headlights, bonnet, door handles and locks and complete instrument panels. Head light glasses and luggage rack. Many other parts including complete doors off the Model A. I am sure that the person who owned these restored cars would be devastated as would any of our members.. I hope these culprits are caught and are dealt with but nothing will make things right for this person who has lost so much of his treasured possessions. Americana is coming to town on the 22nd Feb with around 800 entries so it will be quite a spectacular event and I will be observing how they manage this high entry to get some pointers for our big rally in 2021. A special General meeting will be held in March to alter a couple of sentences in our constitution so that we can get a tax exemption on any interest at the bank. We are still trying to appoint a club Historian to keep our club records up to date. If you or know of any person who can help us please contact any committee member. The posh picnic to promote our club that is to be held on 26th March will be at the Wind wand carpark in New Plymouth from 2.00 to 4.00pm .So here is your opportunity to get dressed up and get the old china out of the cabinet and lets have some fun. If you can’t come in your old vehicle you are welcome to join us but won’t be able to drive into the picnic area, A very good attendance of members and others enjoyed the picnic run to Lake Rotokere and Lake Rotorangi. A beautiful day of warm sunshine made for great motoring on the back country roads and some of the views were outstanding. many thanks to Club captain John for organizing this run. The Hay Day is being held on this weekend at Waitara Road at Honnors farm and we need cars for display. This is a well-run event and we have supported them in the past. Also coming up in March is the Veteran 1 and 2 cylinder rally organised by Steven and Veronica Oliver.And Ron Hyatts Taranaki Aniversary weekend run to Raglan and Waitomo. Also the Waitara Mini Vin Tour will be held on the 26th Feb so here's hoping for a fine day and good participation. Hope to see you there. I will be attending the executive meeting to be held in Auckland in March as club delegate so if you have any concerns that you would like brought up please contact me as Our Delegate Rob T is unable to attend due to a branch commitment. Please check the newsletter for whats coming up and I hope to see members out and about in their vehicles enjoying what summer we haven't had yet. CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT It was pleasing to see a large number of members attending the last Mid-Week run and the Picnic outing to lakes Rotorangi and Rotokare. The weather was perfect for open car motoring which was taken advantage of by quite a few members. Some walked the 1 ½ hour lake circuit which must be one of the most scenic spots in Taranaki. Ron Hyatt has had a good response for the Taranaki Anniversary weekend tour and is checking over the final accommodation details and routes in the Waitomo and Raglan areas for this run. It has been a few years since we have held these long weekend tours so it will be great to get them on the event calendar again as there are many interesting areas we can visit and explore.

As some of our recent events have clashed with the last Sunday of the month we have not kept up our usual Sunday opening of the clubrooms. These will be resumed as soon as possible. A SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING of the Taranaki Branch of the Vintage Car Club of N.Z. will be held at 8.00 pm, Thursday, 16 th March, 2017, at the Branch Clubrooms. Following a request to Inland Revenue by the Taranaki Branch for an exemption from Resident Withholding Tax [RWT] on interest and dividends, Inland Revenue have scrutinized our Branch Constitution and have advised the following changes need to be made before a tax exemption status can be granted. Personal Benefit As the organisation can employ, the constitution requires a personal benefit clause. The clause that must be added follows. “Any income, benefit, or advantage shall be applied to the objectives of the Organisation. No member of the organisation or any person associated with a member, shall participate in or materially influence any decision made by the organisation, in respect of the payment to or on behalf of that member or associated person of any income, benefit, or advantage whatsoever. Any such income shall be reasonable and relative to that which would be paid in an arms length transaction (being open market value). And the provisions and effect of this clause shall not be removed from this document and shall be included and implied into any document replacing this document.” This would become an additional clause to our current Branch Constitution. Alteration of Rules Clause XVI in our constitution allows for the rules to be altered. To qualify for an income tax exemption there must be a clause stating that the objects, personal benefit clause, and winding up clause cannot be altered. Clause XVI, paragraph 3 will require change to the following: “No addition to or alteration of the aims, personal benefit clause or the winding up clause shall be made which affect the tax exempt status.” he provisions and effect of this clause shall not be removed from this document and shall be included and implied into any document replacing this document At the February Branch Committee meeting, it was moved that the alterations to the Branch Constitution be put to the Branch Membership at a Special General Meeting to be held Thursday, 16th March 2017, prior to the monthly N & N.

Burma Rally Whanganui gets lucky Break. I was determined to drive my 1929 DA Dodge Tourer to Whanganui with the hood down for the Burma rally so you can imagine my dismay when I was watching the weather forecast for the weekend from about Monday evening before the weekend saying wind and rain with cloud and maybe fine spells. Friday arrived and I got ready to start my journey in the morning with all the checks I could think of for the car and with cloudy conditions I took off at 1.30pm on time with top down and all the dam wind and cloud around me.The run to Whanganui was very pleasant though and the Dodge was running beautifully with the temperature on normal arriving at 4-10pm. The weekend was going to be an interesting one as the National Veteran Rally was in town with approx 35 veteran vehicles entered. The Friday night was a BBQ tea prepared by VCC members and what a superb meal that was with quite a few entrants in the Veteran and Burma rallies taking part. They also had their parts shed open. A very tidy and large shed was a credit to the branch with members on hand if any body wanted a a part. Saturday entrants from both rallies joined other car clubs for a Vintage Riverside Caboodle in the Victoria precinct with the main streets being closed all day and only rally entrants and other club cars were allowed to be parked. There was a huge attendance from the public with an estimated 6000 people pouring into the central business area to take in various events including music, dancing and an open air market along with all of our cars lining three city blocks and prompting a lot of discussions with the owners. Because of the National Veteran rally there were more cars on show than in previous years.They were very lucky with the weather with warm sunshine and a little wind. A historic Air Chathams DC3 plane delighted scenic flight passengers on Saturday with a local spitfire plane flying over the precinct. But Whanganui was issued with a severe weather warning by the Metservices which forecast heavy rain and strong winds for early Sunday the day of the Burma Rally. Wind gusts peaked around 80km an hour on Saturday night and early Sunday am and eased to moderate by mid morning Sunday. The Rally started at 9.00am and we were able to lower the hood on the Dodge as the weather didn't look to bad,The rally took us out into the Fordell area over an easy written instruction 100 mile course with no silent checks and those of us who were in the competitive part we had just one timed section. Towards the end of the

rally as we approached Turakina we could see the sky getting darker with the wind gusting but we kept going with hood down but the rain did cometh and it was a real experience with that wind and rain as we turned on to the main highway it just bucketed down and I couldn't see a dam thing.Gordon was in the back and getting really hammered by the rain. We weren't the only ones with hood down a Model T was in front of us as well. The instruction was to continue along and turn into the road to Fordell and lucky for us there was a huge hedge that would give us shelter from the wind and rain.We stopped by this and we were able to put the hood up. We got wet but we were not cold. We continued to the finish and lunch stop at the Motutoa Gardens. Prize giving dinner was held at the Racecourse on Sunday night and it was great to see our members Rob Guddop and Ron Hyatt coming third in their sections with Ron winning two spot prizes as well. The whole weekend was very enjoyable and it was good to catch up with old friends from my regular attendances at the Burma Rallies in the 1980s. The national President Diane Quarie was in attendance.There were 70 entrants entered in the Burma Rally with a good cross section of vehicles entered in all classes and approx 35 Veteran vehicles in the National Veteran Rally . On Monday morning I watched the Soap box derby in Drews ave in which 80 young girls and boys had made up their carts and were driving them down the steep hill over jumps and it was a well run event with plenty of spills and excitement. Great to see something of this type of fun for the kids to get them out and about instead of at home on the their play-stations. This was a real family affair with Mums and Dads and all the Aunties and Uncles.

The highlights for me was being able to drive my Dodge to Whanganui and around the rally and back home again with the hood down. Viewing all the beautiful Veteran cars on show and being with my sisters Heather and Nonie ,Bill and Gordon and other Vintage car club members. A very enjoyable rally ... Well done Whanganui. My Dodge performed very well with the heating problems that I had last year all fixed. Dodge Brother Colin
