REX PORTER MEMORIAL RALLY
SATURDAY, 11TH MARCH, 2017 THE RALLY: The Rally Assembly point is at the Vintage Car Club Rooms at Clareville A&P complex. Rally Briefing at 9.30am. First Vehicle away at 10.00am. This will be an all day competitive rally and will include most aspects of rallying. There will be two routes. The Short route will be approximately 80-90 miles for the day and the Long route approximately 130 miles. Competitors are able to choose the Short or Long route. The Long route contains a short gravel stretch but will present the Wairarapa countryside at its best. If there are insufficient entries in any one class, they may be combined. Entrants must bring their own lunch and thermos. Toilets are available at the lunch stop. The evening Dinner and presentation is at the Clubrooms at Clareville. 6.00pm Drinks—BYO 7.00pm Dinner and prize-giving to follow.

Bangers and Beer - March 24th Downstairs at the clubrooms 5.30 pm The next Bangers and Beer evening will be on Friday March 24th, starting at 5:30pm at the clubrooms. As usual bring your VCC eligible vehicle, something to cook on the BBQ for tea, and be prepared to open your bonnet and talk "old machinery" talk. The focus vehicle for the evening will be Simon Byrne's Armstrong Siddley and the focus activity will be spraying rust preventive (fish oil) into the chassis (the rear of the chassis is a boxed C section that Simon wants to treat). Paul Furkert will be bringing the equipment he uses when spraying the chassis of his Land-Rover and will assist Simon with the job. Members are encouraged to join in and pass on their knowledge of how best to do this sort of work.

North Island Easter Rally hosted by Auckland Branch The format of the weekend is as follows: Friday 14 April – Welcome The Clubrooms will be open in the afternoon for a Garden Party. The Spare Parts and Library will be open. Happy hour bar prices. Rally packs available. Dinner 6.00pm – Pizza, salad, and ice cream Saturday 15 April – Rally Day Rally packs available at rally start point at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura. First car away at 9.30am. Rally over rural and closed forest roads. From the Chair Hello to you all, As I mentioned in my report published in the January Newsletter, I would look into the possible reasons for some injuries sustained in the Gold medal Rally. I also asked for any feedback from participants showing their views. I have had only one negative feedback so it would appear that the vast majority of participants were happy with the Rally. I have looked into the routes set and the manner in which the Rally was run and here are my comments. It appears that a Gold Medal Rally was to test the Bike, the reliability of the machine and the rider’s skill. These aspects were marked: e.g. lose 5 marks for oil leak etc. - lose 5 marks for tyre repair etc. - and lose marks for not completing sections within time limits. From the first Rally in the early 1900's in England to the last Rally in 2016 in the Wairarapa, comments have been made about the routes being too difficult. When setting a course, allowances have to be made for less powered bikes, the age of the bikes entered and bikes with only single gearing to be able to complete the course satisfactorily. It is so that all the various types of bikes that are eligible to enter the rally can be accommodated, two different courses seem to be the norm for present day rallies, and it is up to the riders to select which course they wish to enter for. Two courses were set for the latest Gold Medal Rally and I have not found that either course set did not give an acceptable level of test for the bikes or their riders. I do believe that the manner of the briefing given prior to the start of the Rally may have induced some riders to enter the wrong route for either the cycles or their own suitable riding experience. This was unfortunate. The possible incorrect selection of route and the close riding of some competitors, not giving themselves enough 'wriggle room' in unexpected situations, appear to be the probable cause for the spills during the Rally. There will be some of you that question what I know about bike riding. Compared to some of you – probably not very much but, between 1961 and 1968 I owned and rode motorcycles and also rode Police motorcycles. 8
I was considered to be quite proficient even by the 'milk-bar' cowboy fraternity of the time and entered Hill Climbs just for the sheer enjoyment. However with the lack of recent experience on bikes, I consider I would be foolish to tackle anything other than the slower, less demanding course and just enjoy the ride. I do wish every success for the future of the 'Gold Medal' motorcycle rally held by this Club. I hope that all of you are enjoying what summer we have had – if you can call it a summer so far – but here's hoping. Maybe we will have an Indian summer! In friendship, John C.
February Club Captain’s Report The end of January saw the first of our “Bangers and Beer” barbeques organised by David Hunter and was well attended. A particular member’s vehicle will be featured at future BBQs and will feature a technical discussion. The next Bangers and Beer will be on Friday March 24th. Unfortunately we had to introduce “Plan B” for the Remembrance Rally. Organiser Kevin was re-admitted to Hospital just prior to the event so Chairman John stepped in to run the event. Both John and Val found it impossible to contact the owner of the proposed lunch venue so. owing to the remote location of the site, it became necessary to shorten the event by by-passing the lunch venue. However we all enjoyed a pleasant morning’s tour of the Stronvar and Wainuioru areas before returning to the club rooms for lunch. The attraction of the lunch site is well worth a visit so perhaps we can include it in a future event. I have just travelled the route of the Rex Porter Rally with event organiser Willie James. REMEMBRANCE RALLY - 12th February It was in 1786 that Robbie Burns observed in a poem that “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry’. He was probably not thinking about our February rally when he wrote that but he would not have been wrong if he had. The trouble started during the week preceding when rally organiser Kevin Ball (with Val) found himself unexpectedly in hospital. John Clark suddenly, on the Thursday before the rally, found himself in the hot seat of taking over. A major complication was that the owner of the property we were to visit and have lunch at, which was out in the countryside, was incommunicado. Despite John and Val repeatedly trying to raise him by phone they were unsuccessful. And so, at the gathering point at Farriers car park, John explained the situation. He was not prepared to take us out to the intended property, the final part being on a one-way 12 kilometre unsealed road, with the possibility that the owner was absent. So, the rally was shortened in length, with it finishing at the clubrooms at lunchtime after a drive over the Werati Hill and back over the Kourarau Hill. There was a low turnout for this one, just 9 cars. Perhaps the planned gravel section put some off and there was also the annual British Car Day on at Trentham which I know some of our members attend. A new car though was the Model A roadster that Doreen and Ian Johnstone bought along to join in the run. The English couple own a holiday home in Martinborough which they escape to from the English winter every year. The Model A has been recently purchased but back home they own a 1937 Bentley (in pieces at present) and a 1904 De Dion Bouton which they enter in the annual London to Brighton Rally. They are previous members of our branch (“I let the membership lapse a couple of years ago”, Ian admitted), but intend to rejoin. We’ll look forward to their company during future summers. Ian incidentyly has owned several Landrovers in the past and is obviously an enthusiast of them so of course got on like wildfire with Paul Furkert. I won’t say where or what the attraction was that we didn’t get to because it may well be used for a future rally. Despite the shortened length of what we did do it was still a competitive event but there was a winner who couldn’t be awarded the trophy. It was Doreen and Ian who are not members of the Club so next in line were David Hunter and 10
Paul Furkert who were quite happy to take the honours. Our thanks to John for stepping in at the 11th hour to take over and, with Sheila’s help, run the event on the day. BANGERS AND BEER—January Our first Bangers and Beer get together was held on Friday 27 th January with attendance totalling 17 members ( 16 men and one woman) which was a good manageable number for a new event. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly with plenty of talk and laughter. Several cars were ‘looked at’, Frank and Tom opened up the Parts Department, the barbeques were fired up with various meats cooked (or incinerated) and everyone seemed to have an enjoyable time which has encouraged us to plan another one. John Clark lifted the bonnet of his Daimler for us to stand around discussing its engine and then Hugh Hunter did the same on his 1935 Morris 8 Sports. Hugh bought this car soon after starting work as an apprentice mechanic and 50-something years later still owns it. Obviously he knows it inside out and is able to talk at length about it. New member Simon Byrne was there with his very nice 1952 Armstrong Siddley and some took the opportunity to look it over. As the evening went on some went home while the remaining group sat themselves down on chairs in a large circle to talk. There were stories told, questions asked and answered by way of debate (e.g. best way to underseal a car) and useful information imparted. Andrew Dittmar explained why it’s a bad idea to try to apply the handbrake on a Landrover when the vehicle is in motion. It seems it’s a really good way to break a hand! Despite the event’s name there was not a lot of actual beer drinking with a number of attendees settling for soft drink or simply not drinking at all. Certainly, no one over imbibed so there were no problems in that regard. We may have to change the name to Bangers and Soft Drink or something for our future gatherings. Finally, thanks to everyone who came along to help make the evening a success. As I write this the next one is being planned and the details are on page 6 of this edition. David Hunter 12
FEBRUARY CLUBNIGHT Despite being Waitangi Day a good turnout of members attended a most entertaining evening. Our guest speaker was a new member, Leon Crosse. A most entertaining speaker, Leon told of his early career in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a telegraphist (morse code operator) which led to him being involved in numerous Search and Rescue missions in the South Pacific with Sunderland flying boats and later with Orions. He also spoke of his later career with the GCSB and the Security and Intelligence Service. Altogether a most illuminating and enjoyable evening. Gary Lang
Cover Story—My Morris Eight My Morris eight was the first car that I brought when I left school – I have owned her for 53 years! It has had a chequered life. It started life belonging to the NZ Pig Marketing Board. At one stage of its life it belonged to Rossiter’s who had the car wreckers yard on the corner at Clareville. I remember Rossiter’s from my childhood – the place where you took your old car when you did not want it any more. I have 2 pages of ownership papers which are duplicates so I have no idea how many owners it has had. I did pull it apart with the plan of restoring it. However, after sitting around in pieces for 20 years, I simply put it back together so that I could use it and get some pleasure from it. The Morris Eight has been a delightful little car that has given me a lot of pleasure. Hugh Hunter Thanks for the background story to your car. Editor 13
Masterton A&P Show—18th February Do you remember how bad the weather was for the Wairarapa A&P Show day—well I think it was twice as bad for this show. Some farmers were quoting 90 mm of overnight rain! However, as the saying goes, ”the show must go on!” Thank you to the eleven hardy souls who arrived and showed off their vehicles .It was a great display. Despite getting very wet ourselves there was a lot of interest from the public and it was great publicity for our club. THE DOT Finally someone has cleared this mystery up... For centuries Hindu women have worn a dot (Tikka) on their foreheads. Most of us have naively thought this was connected with marriage or religion, but the Indian High Commission in Wellington has recently revealed the true story. When a Hindu woman gets married, she brings a dowry into the union. On her wedding night, the husband scratches off the dot to see whether he has won a: A - Taxi licence in Auckland B - Convenience store in Carterton C - Service station in Wellington D – A bottle shop in Napier E – A pub in Feilding. If there is nothing there, he must stay in India and take a job answering telephones giving technical advice to Xtra clients in New Zealand. My mate just hired an Eastern European cleaner. Took her 15 hours to hoover the house. Turns out she was a Slovak. 15
Rex Porter’s Introduction to Vintage Motoring in the Wairarapa My first association with a vintage car was with the old 1900 De Dion Voiturette in October 1937 when Miss Olive W. Wolters of Carterton asked me if I thought I could get it running so we could drive it in the Carterton Centennial Procession in memory of her father who had been the town’s first Town Clerk. Nothing could have pleased me more than this request. The old car had stood in a disused but luckily weather-proof shed since being driven there by her father in 1914. After shovelling aside a truck-load of gravel that had been dumped in front of the shed doors, I was able to get in and fight my way through the cobwebs to the incredible little old machine. It was standing on its four wire spoked wheels with completely perished tyres. There was a buggy type seat, a pair of kerosene lamps, and a tiny grilled tube radiator low down at the front with a sort of box above. On lifting the lid, expecting to see the engine, it was empty. The engine lived under the seat and was a small single cylinder, vertical, and connected by a chain to a crank-handle on the right side at chest height. It was not seized and cranked readily, even having a bit of compression. The engine drove the wheels via a mystery box, numerous universal joints and two half-shafts. (The true, original De Dion drive.) There were two pedals but they were both brakes. The vertical steering column had two little levers, throttle and spark, and another lever that was connected to the mystery box. There was an unusual HT magneto so I took out the spark plug, tried a few turns of the crank, and it sparked. In a fever of excitement I quickly took off the top of the carburettor, poured in some petrol, cranked some move and the old engine came to life. Amazing after having been quite untouched for 23 years.

The procession was only two weeks off so I had to hurry. Numerous water hoses had to be replaced, four used motorcycle tyres and tubes were scrounged and fitted and everything was oiled and greased. Now for a try at driving it. Movement of the lever on the steering column seemed to engage a clutch and the old bus made movement but then something seemed to slip. Eventually some welding was found necessary in a planetary reverse mechanism which was controlled by a lever on the front seat behind the driver’s right knee. It was then found we had two speeds forward, both clutches, and two speeds reverse. It was extremely simple to drive and quite docile but steering was horrible with about half a turn play. It ran in the procession and performed all day without any trouble. Over the next thirteen years it was driven in sundry processions and in the 1950 ran in a Veteran Car Trial from Lower to Upper Hutt, organised by to Hutt Valley Sports Car Club as a publicity stunt to mark the opening of a new store. In this event Bill Delaney’s little Crestmobile also ran, piloted by Len Southward with Bill a passenger. These two cars were declared joint winners and shared a handsome trophy. There was another starter but it did not finish. Miss Wolters died in 1954 and I was able to acquire the veteran from the estate. I did some restoration, re-paint and trim. The brand on the magneto was MEA and it was made in USA. It was shaped like a motorcycle generator. Obviously not original as HT mags were not yet invented in 1900. In August 1955 I received a letter from the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand over the signature of Andy Anderson saying they had seen mention of me and the De Dion in the newspaper, suggesting I join the club, mentioning that a newly formed branch had been established at Wanganui. This was the first I had heard of the Vintage Car Club. I joined and found that Wanganui was the only branch in the North Island at that time. The De Dion was trailered to events over there and elsewhere, with Roy Elwin or Ivor Harvey as navigator. A big event was the first National Vintage and Veteran Rally held at Picton, Easter 1958. The old bus was driven over the Rimutakas to Wellington and on to the ferry with two on board plus a lot of luggage. We took four hours for the 50 mile trip but had no trouble. Rex Porter’s Introduction to Vintage Motoring in the Wairarapa Continued Wellington Branch was formed mid 1958 and my membership was transferred there along with that of Les and Alan Jones, John Keedwell, Roy Elwin, Glen Bull, Ivor Harvey, Murray Morenzi and others. From then on our cars or motorcycles competed in both branches and at other places as far afield as New Plymouth, Morrinsville and Hastings. The Hawkes Bay Branch was formed in January 1959. A very successful Old Car Show was staged in Carterton in July 1959 to raise funds for a charity. There was a good muster of 14 cars in October 1960 at a Picnic Run to Carters Reserve. Incidentally, this was the first appearance of my 1907 De Dion which has since clocked up 11,100 miles in attending events, including the 1972 International in the South Island. (These two De Dions were fully described and illustrated in Beaded Wheels, June 1957, March 1958 and December 1960.) The older De Dion was sold to Len Southward for his Museum as it had only been gathering dust by 1964 and was not used once the much faster De Dion was mobile. February 10th 1962 was the best local effort to date when 36 vintage and Veteran machines put on a fine display at Tauherenikau Racecourse to participate in the Wairarapa Automobile Association’s 50th Jubilee Picnic, and the Manawatu Branch of the Vintage Club came into existence that year. Rex Porter This short “tale” written by Rex Porter is from a booklet entitled “Wairarapa Branch 1968-78” which was compiled by Maureen Bull. Jamie Oliver has been accused of shoplifting a kitchen utensil from Tesco. Oliver says it was a whisk he was prepared to take. Police stopped a Pakistani in his transit van on the motorway. Policeman says "Do you know the limit is 70?" The driver leans into the back and says: "Hear that........3 of you have got to get out!" 18
