Preface The family is the basic unit of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The home should be the principal (main) place where individuals learn how to meet (provide for) their needs and how to work out their exaltation. The father should seek the following goals and, assisted by the mother, should help each family member to achieve them. Each individual not living with a family should also seek these goals: 1. Seek the truth and develop faith in God. 2. Repent of sins. 3. Be baptized for the remission of sins and become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 4. Receive the Holy Ghost (gift of the Holy Ghost). 5. Search (Diligently study) the scriptures. 6. Be married in the temple to a worthy companion for eternity. 7. Create a happy home for the family. 8. Support the family by love and sacrifice. 9. Keep (Obey) the commandments of God. 10. Have private (your own, individual) prayers. 11. Share the gospel with others. 12. Seek (search for) information about dead ancestors and do temple work for them. 13. Provide for himself the nourishment required for proper spiritual, social, physical, and emotional health. 14. Serve others. The father presides over the family and is assisted by the mother. They are companions and should counsel together on all matters pertaining to the home and the family. If there is no father in the home, the mother is responsible for the family. An accounting of the welfare of the family should be made by the father to the Lord and leaders of the Church, which the Lord has established to assist the father and the family.
2
The Lord has commanded parents to teach the gospel to their children. To Adam he said, "I give unto you a commandment, to teach these things freely unto your children" (Moses 6:58). Fulfillment of this responsibility is the key to joy in this life and in the life hereafter. Concerning this responsibility the Lord has further said: "Inasmuch as parents have children in Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized, that teach them not to understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands, when eight years old, the sin be upon the heads of the parents. "For this shall be a law unto the inhabitants of Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized . . . . "And they shall also teach their children to pray, and to walk uprightly before the Lord" (D&C 68:25-26, 28). The leaders of the Church teach that "the home is the first and most effective place for children to learn the lessons of life: truth, honor, virtue, self-control; the value of education, honest work, and the purpose and privilege of life. Nothing can take the place of home in rearing and teaching children" ("Message from the First Presidency," Walk in the Light, [family home evening manual, 1975], p. 3). With the family as its basic unit, the strength of the Church depends upon families and individuals who live the gospel of Jesus Christ. The extent to which a family enjoys the blessings of the gospel largely depends upon how well the father and the mother understand and perform their basic duties. The Church does not intend to give programs or responsibilities to fathers and mothers that will overwhelm or discourage them or will cause them to neglect their most basic duties as parents. This family guidebook has been prepared to help individuals and families live the gospel. As they understand and fulfill their family duties, they will experience happiness here on earth and in the life to come. "The founding of a home is as sacred a work as the founding of a church" (David O. McKay, Church News, 11 Oct. 1958, p. 5).
