PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

EDITOR’S NOTE

Hello VMBC members! It’s cold outside! No scooter riding anytime soon. This winter sure is off to a bitter cold one with lots of snow predicted. Maybe we will have a white Christmas this year? I hope everyone remembers the true meaning of it all. Getting the scooter of your dreams– right? Well kinda. I’ve got the word to keep this message short because of limited room in this magazine, so I’ll do my best. First of all, my dad, Garrett Chafin, is retiring from the Club Editor’s position. We are looking to fill this position ASAP! If you think you qualify for this position and would like to offer your services, please contact me at dchafin1122@ gmail.com or call me at 419-642-3145. Please think about it if you are qualified and would like to do something for the club. Secondly, our website at vintagemotorbikeclub.org has been redesigned! It is more appealing to the eye and more informative. It also offers the opportunity to discuss your projects with other club members from around the world on our new forum page. Post your scooter parts and projects for sale or wanted for free. Have a question about how to perform a certain procedure on your carburetor? Post it on the forum and get possibly ten or twenty different answers on how to do it for free. I have invested a lot of work into this website so that our club can have a website that we can be proud to own and participate in. You have got to check it out if you get bored this winter. Be sure that you check out the right website as our old website is still in operation, but without all the new bells and whistles. The correct address is at the bottom of every club magazine page. That’s it for now. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. Best wishes to all our members from Darren, Jenni, Reece, and Eva. Ride Safe! Darren Chafin VMBC President

Now all the scooter motorbike meets are over, and I enjoyed every one. Next in line is Christmas, and I wish everyone the best ever. This year I managed to attend the 2nd Zundapp Motorcycle and Scooter Meet at Kevin Johnson’s farm. I was there two days and had a great time. There was about twenty or thirty Zundapp scooters and approximately fifty to seventy motorcycles. We met some great people including some VMBC members. The food was catered, which was very delicious. Fireworks covered the skies, and everyone there had a great time. Some had come from Europe and other countries just for this meet. We thank Kevin for all the work he did to arrange and accomplish a fun time. Being that Kevin can’t have the meet next year, the VMBC board and officers were asked if it would be possible to combine the VMBC and the Zundapp Meet at Portland. With much discussion at the board meeting, it was determined that this would be beneficial for both clubs. This would allow more Zundapp members to become VMBC members, have place for their meet, and find out how great our club is. The only and fair approach would be to have them join the club and have the same privileges, aims, and concepts that all VMBC members have. So if you see new members this year at the meet along with some Zundapp machines you will know what is going on. Everyone knows this is a familyoriented club and will be advantageous for all concerned. So we welcome all new members to Portland 2015. I want to thank Jim Whetzel, Bob Hirschfeld, Ron Bussey, and others for the photos they submitted for the magazine. I also want to thank those who have taken the time and effort to record their past-time memories in the VMBC magazine. It is history of our unique experiences. So till next time, remember to send those photos and articles for publication in the magazine. Sincerely, Garrett

SECRETARY’S REPORT The Vintage Motor Bike Club Fall Board meeting was held on October 19, 2014 at Romer’s in St. Henry, Ohio. There were 30 members in attendance for the meeting. The meeting was called to order by President, Darren Chafin. Kaitlyn Edelbrock gave a combined Secretary and Treasurer’s Report. Kaitlyn discussed not receiving a bill for the 4-H building rental for the meet, Tom Zimmerman was able to give her a contact info as to who to contact about getting the bill paid as soon as possible. The People’s Choice ballot was also discussed as many members asked about it during the meet not coinciding with the classes. There was a Open Class Motorcycle Class added to the list. It was also discuss that not all classes are considered for the People’s Choice Award and that is why the numbers are not on the ballot. These classes are strictly for the judges to judge. If the class is not listed on the ballot and it is voted in a category that vote will not be counted. Changes will be made to the People’s Choice ballot for the 2015 Meet. Kaitlyn also noted that the 2014 Meet brought in $422.65 less than the 2013 Meet did. The main area this loss came from was the auction. It was discussed to possibly have the auction moved to Sunday instead of Monday to maybe attract more people who are free on the weekend. The main concern with moving the auction is the time of the games. The schedule will be looked over by the board and changes may be made accordingly. Kaitlyn also discussed the meet stats for the 2014 Meet and the statistics to date. Kaitlyn did mention that she sent out postcards and e-mail reminders to members who have had their membership lapse in the last few years. She did spark some interest in members and had more than enough renewed to cover the cost of mailing the postcards. Listed below are the 2014 meet stats and current membership stats. Meet Stats • • • • • •

1,076 members renewed before the meet 274 pre-registered campers 155 new members joined at the meet 55 previously lapsed members paid at meet 377 members renewed at the gate 881 people checked in at the membership table

Statistics to date • • • • • • •

1,945 member to date 201 new members 74 previously lapsed members paid 302 members unpaid from last year 256 members unpaid from 2012 255 members unpaid from 2011 243 members unpaid from 2010

New Business Darren spoke with the board about their view of holding the meet on the weekend. The board agreed that it has been a good thing to have the meet over the weekend as it allows more people to come without using vacation days at work. It has also brought in some younger people to the meet. The board has decided to continue to hold the meet over the weekend for the years to come. Darren also spoke of the raffle for free camping in 2015 that was held the last day of the meet. The raffle had a great turn out and many vendors stayed open till the end which was great for the meet. The raffle will be held again in 2015. Denise also spoke about her plans for the new plaques that will be used in place of trophies for the 2015 Meet. They are looking great so far and the board is looking forward to seeing the finished product at the meet! All trophies that we currently have will be reused for the games in the coming years. Tom Zimmerman gave a report on the new building that is going up on the fairgrounds that will be complete by the 2015 Meet. He stated that the floor will be poured next week and the building would be going up in November with it being enclosed by the time serious cold weather will hit. He also mentioned there is talk of adding camper hook-ups in the field in the future but a date has not been set for that improvement. Tom also noted that the band concert will not be held on the Friday before the meet this year. The discussion of raising dues was brought up next. Due to the rising cost of expenses the board discussed whether now would be a good time to raise the cost of dues $5.00 which has not happened in many years. The board members agreed that the time has come to raise the dues a motion was made and the motion was passed. The dues for the 2015-2016 year will now be $30 for U.S. dues and $40 for international dues. Darren also mentioned that Garrett Chafin continued to page 5

A WHIZZER STORY When I was about 15 years old, probably 1945 or 1946, my dad stopped at a country store along with my late cousin, Ray Quesenberry and myself. While there a man stopped off riding a Whizzer motorbike, the first one we had ever seen! We walked over to look at it and watched him ride Another shot of Olen off on it. Both of Quesenberry without his us decided that we hat around 1946 on his had to have one some Whizzer. This time with ourselves time. his Whizzer story. Some time later Ray came by to see me and was riding his new Whizzer motorbike that he had just bought and let me take a ride on it. My mind was made up now, I definitely had to have one of my own. Trouble is, I was still in high school and didn’t have much money from my allowance, plus mowing a few lawns. I was getting real anxious to get a Whizzer but only had enough money for the Western Flyer bicycle which was priced $39.95. Feeling sorry for me, my parents told me that they would buy the engine for me which cost $97.95 but I had to promise to take on more chores. Now I could buy the Whizzer and bike and have enough left to pay for a Virginia license tag. After about a year the magneto burned out. I checked with a local dealer to find out that a new magneto cost $8.50, which I didn’t have at the time. Following my interest in science and physics in high school, I had become intrigued with anything electrical. In a ditch one day I had found a discarded induction coil from an automobile bent out of shape. I pried the metal jacket off and hooked up a 6-volt lantern battery to it and it produced a nice spark from the secondary. When my magneto went out on my Whizzer, I got a bright idea that I might get the motor to run by using this coil. First I cut up a wooden Velveeta cheese box to put the coil into. Then I tied on a 6-volt lantern

battery wired through a toggle switch with the coil placed just above the cylinder on the bike frame. Soon as I got everything hooked up, I turned on the switch and cranked the engine, and presto, it fired right up! It would run so smooth that you could almost count the firings when the engine was idled down so low. When you stop to think about it, with the magneto taken off and spark being supplied every other revolution, it really added to the precision of this little Whizzer engine. I’ve found the manual from this engine and the serial number was H-86542. I believe I was 17 years old when I rigged up the coil. When I had saved up a little money, I bought a new magneto and removed all the battery coil system; however I still have the coil in the cheese box retired to my basement work bench. Later on I bought a Bendix generator with hi-lo headlight and taillight. When I got called into the army for Korean services I sold my Whizzer bike. When I heard about Vintage Motor Bike Club, I joined the club and have acquired a couple Whizzers which I own to help reminisce about my early days of pleasant memories. Olen L. Quesenberry

SECRETARY’S REPORT...continued from page 4

will be retiring from his position of Editor with the magazine at the end of this membership year. If you know of anyone that would be willing to take over the position, please contact Darren Chafin for more information. Darren also mentioned that he would like to end his role as President of the club after 3 meets, in order to be able to spend more time with his kids during the meets. If you know of any one that would like to take on this role, please contact Darren for more information. Darren also noted that he is currently working on the website and hopes to have it up and running soon with new features! Kaitlyn delivered big news during the meeting. Kaitlyn and her husband are expecting their first child in March of 2015! Please keep this in mind when spring renewals come due as Kaitlyn will be adjusting to life with a new born while trying to stay up-to-date with renewals. So membership cards and camping tags may be delayed some but she will be working hard to get them to the members in a timely manner.

2014 HARTVILLE SHOW AND SWAP MEET September 4, 5, and 6, 2014 were the dates for the 6th Annual Classic Bicycle, Motorbike and Motorscooter Show & Swap Meet at the Hartville MarketPlace & Flea Market in Hartville, OH. The weather was warm, sunny and very pleasant. The Manager of the MarketPlace had a large tent (40’ x 100’) set-up in the Meet area for the show and it was well used. On Thursday, late afternoon, there were 27 motorbikes and scooters riding to the Maize Valley Car Show. And, just as promised by the Car Show host, the pumpkin cannon was shooting pumpkins over a quarter mile into the farm fields. Friday morning there was a ride to the Goodyear Blimp Hanger to see if the new blimp, Wingfoot One, was flying. Happily, as we rode up we saw the blimp doing ‘touch & go’s.’ The pilot of the craft flew close to the fenced area where we were and did some acrobatic moves with it. He put on quite a show. On Friday afternoon, we rode 9 miles to the New Baltimore ice cream stand. Just about 300 feet from our destination, not 1 but 2 Whizzers had flat tires. We got them to the ice cream place and called for a ‘Whizzer retrieval vehicle.’ The flat tires didn’t stop us from having ice cream, however. Saturday started off big with a lot of buying and selling. Unfortunately, it did rain in the late morning, but the large tent was a life saver. All in all, it was a nice Meet and it is continuing to grow. We’ve begun planning for 2015, so come join us. Bob Hirschfelt Saturday, July 4th, 2015 Vintage Scooter Meet Part of the Olde Time Farm Show Car Show and Vintage Scooter Meet Perry Farm Park, Rt. 45-52, Bourbonnais, IL 60914 This is the Farm Shows 17th Year so it should be a great show. ATTENTION

VMBC 2015 Meet July 17, 18, 19, 20 & 21 IN MEMORY John Louis Stump, 71, of Grabill, Ind., passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, with family by his side. At the time of his passing, he was a patient of the Cleveland Clinic, as a result of a brain aneurysm. Prior to being taken to the clinic, John and Denise were vacationing in Wooster, Ohio with friends. Born Jan. 15, 1943, he was the second son of Clarence Elgain Stump (deceased 1993) and Rita May Sordelet. His school years were spent at St. Peters Catholic Grade School, Central Catholic High School class of 1960, Purdue University (ASMET, 1963; BSME, 1967), and Northwestern University (MSME 1969). Learning was important to John and he continued to take classes throughout his adult life. He was a Certified Manufacturing Engineer and was a Professional Engineer in both the states of Indiana and Illinois. After college, John went to work for the Bell Systems in Batavia, Ill. In 1975, he left the Bell Systems to return to Fort Wayne and to work with his father in the family business, Quality Tool Company Inc. Ultimately, Elgain appointed John President of the company, a position he held until his aneurysm. John loved working in the tool shop and was proud of the fact that the business remained successful, despite the turn in the economy of the Fort Wayne area. Some say that the business was his passion. Other passions that John had included: driving and restoring street rods and antique cars; watch and clock collecting and restoration; reading just about anything; history, particularly the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln; art, including creating drawings and sculptures; and riding his motorcycle or his antique Cushman motor scooter. John was a member of many clubs and organizations including Cushman Club of America and VMBC. Many of us will miss John at the meets. Submitted by Edward Gensheimer

1959 BREMMER MOTOR SCOOTER My interest in motor scooters began in 1993 as I was attending the Iola Swap Meet in Wisconsin. I came across the carcass of what was a Bremmer motor scooter. It appeared to be mostly there including the Briggs & Stratton engine. What really aroused my interest was the fact that it was constructed almost entirely of aluminum casting. This fell right into my vocation and business of patternmaking and foundry. After a little haggling, (I think the owner knew that I had to have it). I bought the scooter. The scooter was made by Bremmer Manufacturing, a foundry in the Milwaukee Wisconsin area. In a conversation with an original family member I learned that it was made circa 1959 and was 1 of 10 of this particular model. The only advertisment I have found showed it being used as transportation when you arrived in port with your yacht. The scooter sat in the basement of my shop until 2009 when the decision was made to restore it before I died and it got scraped for the aluminum. There are 34 aluminum castings in this scooter including the main frame.

Most motor scooters of this era had tubular frames and had 2/3rds less parts. There were a half dozen parts missing but Jim Kilau, who runs a scooter shop in St. Paul, had the same scooter and could reproduce the missing pieces. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of bringing it back to original condition. It took about 1-1/2 years to restore the Bremmer and since then it has been judged all the way thru A.A.C.A. Grand National. Floyd Jaehnert St. Paul , MN

PUDDLEJUMPER Every now and then a scooter story comes along that I feel is worth sharing with other VMBC members. The Puddlejumper is one of those stories. A few months back, I got a call from a scooter buddy about what he thought might be an oddball “Salsbury” scooter for sale on eBay. I looked it up and, to my amazement, there was the photo of a “barn find” Puddlejumper. It was in a consignment store in Clinton, New York, and was listed as a “buy it now” unknown scooter. Needless to say, time was of the essence, so I contacted the seller and arranged to purchase it. The Puddlejumper scooter was manufactured by Midget Motors Corporation in Kearney, Nebraska. According to a reprint of a sales brochure that appears in several books about scooters, including the “Scooter Bible” by the Dregni Bros., production started in 1938. It is very rare scooter, and, so far, I have not talked to anyone who remembers having seen one. I don’t know how many were produced, how long they were made, or how many survived, but I assume that

this one is a 1940 or later model as it has its original Briggs & Stratton Model “N” engine which did not come out until 1940. I had the scooter shipped to me and, on close inspection, found it to be complete with the exception of its seat. The condition was rough...no original paint and plenty of dents and rust, so I decided to restore it. I was able to get the original engine running with the help of a couple “parts motors” and drove the chassis around prior to final paint and assembly. The tail reflector and 1951 New York plate came with the scoot. I added the early Delta headlight. The brochure showed the two-tone paint scheme but was not in color. I figured red and white were a safe bet, and the “after” pictures show the results. The following “before”, “during”, and “after” photos pretty well describe the restoration process. Finding a rare scoot and bringing it back to life is always fun. Anyone who wants to talk “Puddlejumper” can just give me a call @ 714-393-1333. Submitted by Jerry Perkins

Maxwell the Scooter A school project built by the students of Bethlehem Lutheran School. By John H. Maas, Teacher I picked up this Cushman here at Portland in 2012. I wanted to have a scooter for my students to restore. I hoped that it would be a good team building exercise and give my students some experience working with their hands on something mechanical. I also think that we need to be passing on our interest in scooters to some younger people, mostly so that we have a new generation to listen to the same old stories we have been telling for years. We did classroom work with story writing, graphic design, budgeting, math problems (ex. Maxwell is leaving Portland at 7 am traveling at 28 mph, you leave Raymore at the same time on your bike going 14 mph, if it is 500 miles to Portland when will you meet and how far will each of you have traveled?). We also did lots of scooter artwork. Several of our scooter posters won prizes at the local art fair. We even tried for corporate sponsorship from Geico. Nothing yet. We had a great time tearing Maxwell down for some mechanical work and a repaint. We had to start with the basics, “This is a wrench, and it is used to turn a bolt”. It was surprising how slowly the work went. A job that might take me 10 minutes to do might take them 40, or longer, but I had to just sit back and give direction and advice but not do the work or they would lose interest. Sanding a little rough, “Push harder, its sanding not dusting, no, don’t use the 60 after we use the 400, just smooth the putty don’t remove it”. But they had lots of fun sanding, especially wiping red sanding dust onto their arms and faces. I quickly saw that our bodywork was not going to be smooth enough for our school color of royal blue, so we went with International Ivory. This was the closest to piggy pink that I would let them get. “Yes,” I said, “Maxwell the pig is pink, but you are not going to have me riding around Portland on a pink scooter.” The kids each got to do some of the spraying. We set up a paint booth and used a Harbor Freight purple paint gun. Using a spray gun was new for all of them

having only used spray cans before. Hannah, a 7th grade girl, really took to it like a duck to water. After only a little practice she was laying down smooth, even passes, that made me jealous. A couple others had trouble with moving an arm and pulling a trigger at the same time. It could be that they were totally freaked out about wearing a respirator. The students were very nervous about reassembly. Would it all go back together? Will I be the one to scratch the paint? How will the pinstripes look in sunlight? Will the new clutch work? Will it go to fast? The cheers of success were louder than the exhaust when we first started it up. Everyone, their kids, parents, and teachers went for a ride, and other than a chain coming off everything went smoothly. Would I do it again? Absolutely! It was a great experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in scooters and the future of our hobby. The kids have a lot of interest and can learn many skills. It can take patience and a willingness to let them do their own work and make their own mistakes, but the pride they show when they see that you are really letting them do it not watch you do it more than makes up for some runs, scratches or poor alignment of parts. Restoring an old scooter lets today’s kids learn a lot, just like we did back in the day when these scooters were younger and so were we. I asked one of my students to share what he learned from working on Maxwell. It is interesting to read his take on our scooter restoration. After receiving the Herb Singe Youth Award for the kids I hosted an ice cream party and scooter ride for my scooter buddies, the students who worked on Maxwell and their families. It was a great evening eating and riding scooters. I hope to do it again soon.
