PRODUCTS OF EXPERIENCE Violet Luczak’s Senior Thesis Graphic Design Major / Elmhurst College VioletLuczak.com / 708.692.0688
Artist Statement Products of Experience is a series of packages, each tied to a specific formative moment in my life. Important life events from every other year are displayed in chronological order. Packaging is typically used in a commercial context to provide information and prompt a consumer to purchase an item. When packaging is removed from a commercial context, it becomes sculptural, allowing the object to exist between the familiar structures of daily life and something more personal. This shared visual vernacular of common, everyday objects creates a familiar entry point to engagement with the work, and it allows ideas to be represented explicitly, while highlighting the relationship between what’s visible on the outside and the unseen contents within. The package contents range from conceptual to literal, and the packaging is made from a variety of materials, such as SBS board, PET film, glass, ceramic decals, adhesive transfers, silk screening, and foil, all while utilizing an array of printing techniques. Each package template, logo, and illustration was designed by hand.
Naked Dolly, 1997 Doll Package, Custom Logo and Graphics When I had just turned two, my grandma gave me a doll for my second birthday. I was forgetful, and I often misplaced the doll’s clothing to a point where she had none. This inspired my favorite toy’s name: Naked Dolly. I took her everywhere, and she became a part of the family. To represent this memory, I created a box for Naked Dolly© in the style of a 1990s toy package, reflecting the era of the doll’s popularity. The package design incorporates gradation, outlined text, and bright colors. The logo consists of handdrawn lettering, and the template was created from scratch. Appearing in the photo on the back of the package are my sister Amber (seen left) and myself (seen right).

innocence, 1999 Toy Package with Heat Sensitive Film When I was four, I made a friend named Saige at preschool. Because Saige was African American, some people had trouble accepting our friendship. This led to us being bullied, which I had trouble understanding at such a young age. This was the first time my innocence was challenged, as I encountered the harsh reality of racism. I chose to create a character called innocence© to reflect upon this memory. The package of the character innocence© is hidden beneath a heat sensitive film, which turns transparent only when held. When the observer lets go of innocence©, the designs disappear behind the black film.

Paradise Mouse Hut, 2001 SBS Cardboard Box When I was six years old, I woke up one morning to see that my parents had set up mouse traps around the house. I did not want to see the mice get hurt, so I managed to convince my parents to use non-lethal traps. Paradise Mouse HutŠ is an idealized, child-friendly concept, where mice are enclosed in a fun, relaxing resort until being released safely outdoors. Each illustration, as well as the logo, was drawn by hand, edited in Photoshop, then arranged in Illustrator.

2. Plant palm trees. Your mouse will need some palm trees to complete their tropical atmosphere. First, dig a few holes, then transplant the provided palm saplings. Lastly, fill the dug out area around each sapling with dirt and pat the surrounding soil to secure the young palm trees.
1) Pop open hut structure. To build the essential kit home for your mouse, you must first secure 4 support posts. Next, raise each wall individually to be fastened upright. Finally, expand the hut’s roof in an umbrella fashion to create the ultimate vacation home.

Sista Sista Mallows, 2003 Marshmallow Bag Printed on OPP Around age eight, my sister Amber and I founded a secret organization called the Sista Sista club at our parents’ cabin in Lake Geneva. One of our favorite activities in Lake Geneva was having campfires. One night, our parents were not available to make a campfire, so we decided to use our imaginations and created a campfire by using forks as skewers, apples as marshmallows, and a flashlight as a fire. In honor of this memory, I designed the Sista Sista MallowsŠ package. The color choices of purple and yellow represent the names Violet and Amber, the logo consists of hand-drawn lettering, the template has been designed from scratch, and the copy in the nutrition facts section has been altered to reflect characteristics of sisterhood.

Violet’s Anxiety, 2005 Glass Bottle with Ceramic Decals, 3D Printed Cork When I was in middle school, I began to suffer from General Anxiety Disorder (GAD). This prevented my ability to attend school, complete my school work, and it strained my relationships with friends and family. After numerous absences, I woke up one morning to police at my door, who threatened to arrested me for truancy and brought me to an alternative school for troubled youth. The Violet’s Anxiety© bottle embodies the unsteadiness, uncertainty, and fear associated with overcoming my anxiety at this time. This is displayed through the custom design of the imbalanced bottle, the sharp edges of the cork, the graphical use of wavering lines, and the haphazardly written logo.

Violet Packages, 2007 Rub On Transfers on Glass and Plastic Containers When I was in middle school, I made the personal choices to eat vegetarian, follow Christianity, and disregard feminine stereotypes. It was through this difficult decision-making process that I began to understand that my choices are my own–independent of my family and peers. The Violet PackagesŠ consist of everyday kitchen ingredients, representing the foundational nourishment these ideas provided for my identity, body, and faith. The simplicity of the ingredients and design symbolize both the purity and youthful earnestness of these central decisions. The nutrition facts and information highlight the core ideas behind each statement.

Doubt Badges, 2009 Embroidered Badges, Silkscreened Backings, Box Printed on SBS Cardboard I first attended Camp Awana, a Christian camp, the summer before 7th grade. It was there that doctrines and theologies were presented to me daily. While my counselors discouraged the campers from questioning what they were taught, I fought for my right to choose what to believe. At camp, you are awarded Bible badges when you memorize verses. In contrast, I created a series of Doubt BadgesŠ as a reward for making one’s own decisions when faced with doubts. There are four badges in this sequence: Confusion, Awareness, Exploration, and Decision. I created the graphics for each badge using earthy tones, and printed the backings on Kraft paper to achieve a rustic, camp feeling. The logo was hand-made, as well as the template for the box containing the patches and their backings.

Balaton & Michigan Bars, 2011 Wafer Bar Wrappers During the summer of 2011, I traveled to Budapest, Hungary on a mission trip to teach English. It was there that I met one of my closest friends, Fruszi. The last time I visited Fruszi, her family drove my mother and I to Lake Balaton. Despite the distance between Chicago and Budapest, my friendship with Fruszi has remained strong. To commemorate this friendship, I created two bars based on the famous Balaton Bars sold in Hungary. Both are named after the lakes nearest to where Fruszi and I live: Lake Balaton and Lake Michigan. As many of our conversations have been hosted through video calls, the Balaton Bar© is displayed via a Skype call. The back of the Balaton Bar© features a Hungarian styled nutrition label. On the back of the bars reads a Hungarian phrase, “Celebrate friendship.”

Charlie Brown, 2013 Paint Can Label In my senior year of high school, my theater tech design team won the state award for stage design, celebrating our Charlie Brown set. As the head designer of the team, I was particularly proud of this accomplishment. To embody this achievement, I created a package for the design award. The label wraps around a paint can to represent the handpainted Charlie Brown set, and the hand-lettered typography mimics the Charlie Brown chevron pattern.

David + Violet, 2015 Printed on Matte Vinyl, Mounted on SBS Cardboard During my sophomore year at Elmhurst College, I began my relationship with my boyfriend David. Our friendship and dating relationship has helped me develop as an individual while enriching my college experience. To represent our relationship, I created a hexagon box, which is comprised of multiple pieces, and, when brought together, form a complete hexagon. On the sides of each individual box are categories that unite David and me. I designed the templates for each box in Illustrator, then edited them in a 3D modeling software.

ReThink Packaging, 2017 Cardboard Boxes Covered in Matte Vinyl & Laser Cut Last year, I had the privilege to showcase my artwork at Reggie’s, a pub and venue located in Chicago. This was the first time that I truly felt like an accomplished adult artist. I sold all of the pieces on display, and I received orders on a wait list. To commemorate my experience at Reggie’s, I developed a protective casing for the artwork sold at the show. The geometric designs on the boxes were removed by laser cutter to reveal the hidden prints within the casings.
