Still Life with Veil
For Heather
“There’s a veil between us & everyone else,” she said. “But if you turn the veil into a canvas, well…” Her voice trailed off. The room, a silence; light, going from strength to strength. “I never know what to do with my hands when there isn’t a little dog in them.” A pause fluttered a wing; the cage did not rock. “Or a brush,” I said. The pause tucked its beak, a gesture towards privacy, but privacy is a piece of fruit next to a knife. “Or a brush,” she agreed. It makes a difference: whether you listen to “In My Room” before “No Reply,” or just after. All the difference: a world— in a veil, in a silence, in an eye.
