Dr. Kathleen Mullaney
"We treat everyone here like they’re our family,” says Dr. Kathleen Mullaney, a private dental practitioner who has been named ‘Top Dentist’ by Washingtonian Magazine. Dr. Mullaney attended the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry, receiving her Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS). She then served six years in the United States Navy where her first assignment was a prestigious internship with the Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA. Offering a wide range of dental services, including cosmetic procedures, Dr. Mullaney says her practice includes families that span as many as four generations and emphasizes the importance of creating a sense of community and comfort for patients. “I’ve lived and worked in Old Town for 25 years. These are my people. Any cause that I support is in the interest of taking care of my community.” Dr. Mullaney—whose father served in the Navy for 42 years—says her practice has a special focus on veterans. “We had a program called ‘Freedom Day,’ where we offered free dental work to veterans who didn’t have access to care. We saw a number of homeless veterans, which was heartbreaking.” The doctor also stresses the importance of the relationship between dental health and overall health. “Study after study has shown that patients with periodontal or gum disease are at higher risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, and diabetes. There are so many links between our physical health and oral health.” Dr. Mullaney lives in Old Town with her husband and is the proud mother of two daughters, who say that their mother’s hard work and success have served as an example of what a strong woman can achieve.
