AT HOME ON THE
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUMMER DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY DESIGNER TOOTSIE HOLLIS ALLEN
There’s a distinct feeling of escapism in the home that Robert and Renee Burroughs own in Orange Beach. It’s a sense of grandeur that fits the Mediterranean architecture, which is surrounded by lush tropical plants and a landscape to match. Built in the early 2000s, the home boasts large, concrete pillars across the back supporting the second story of the structure, with a stucco exterior and a beautiful terracotta roof. The aesthetic is echoed by that of the marina and boathouse, completing the picture of paradise that the Burroughs have created with their property at the water’s edge of St. John’s Bayou. “The view and the beautiful setting make this a wonderful place to have a home,” says Robert, who is the owner and founder of the Burroughs Companies located in Laurel, Mississippi, where he and Renee have their main residence.
With a courtyard that features a waterfall as well as massive gates salvaged from an ancient English castle dating back to the 1700s and in addition to a heated spa, the home is set back on the property for just enough privacy to give it the true sense of sanctuary. At approximately 7,000 square feet, the massive two-story home comprises three bedrooms and three and a half baths as well as massive living spaces whose look and feel work in perfect harmony with the exterior. Faux finished walls, travertine tile flooring, interior columns, soaring ceilings with inset detailing, and polished woodwork make each space cohesive to the next, given a warmth created by the natural tones and textures used in each room.
Perfect for entertaining, the kitchen features polished dark wood cabinetry crowned by granite as well as a massive center island. Stainless steel Sub-Zero appliances complete the room, offering top-of-the-line amenities for the at-home chef. Along one wall of the galley-style kitchen, a pass-through window overlooks the living room, opening the spaces to one another.

With its grand staircase and a stunning chandelier, the living room is an impressive space, as well, made even more so by the columns that adjoin it to the formal dining room with 28-foot ceilings that give it a sense of airiness. Perfectly suited to the home’s architecture and aesthetic, the interior design speaks of decorator Arvia (Tootsie) Allen’s handiwork. “The selection of furniture and accessories in this home really shines,” says Robert. “It absolutely shows her talent in design work.”
Naturally, the master suite is a gem within the home, offering a great deal of space as well as sanctuary. Boasting seating areas and a balcony overlooking the water and boathouse, it is the perfect escape, with breathtaking views of the coastline. The room adjoins an equally spacious master bath that has been split into a his-andhers layout, with a massive walk-in shower and a jacuzzi tub. Renee’s side of the master bath, of course, has a very large walk-in closet with a carousel for her hanging clothes.
With its location on the water, the backyard takes advantage of the locale, featuring a full outdoor kitchen and a lush lawn edging along the beach, part of the landscaping so beautifully created by Josh Godbold of Emerald Coast Landscaping. “This home was my top choice for many reasons,” says Robert. “The property is located right at the Perdido Pass, connecting me to the Gulf of Mexico, which makes it really nice for me when I’m heading out on my boat Quicktime, a 70-foot Viking sport fisher that I use for Marlin tournament fishing,” says Robert.
Clearly, this home checks all the boxes for the Burroughs, offering them a great escape from work life in Laurel: the water, the view, the luxury. And—of course—space for their three fur babies.
Real Estate Photography that’s sure to impress.
