July, 2017 Greetings athletes, coaches, and friends, As the chairman of Virginia Amateur Sports Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to the 28th year of the Virginia Commonwealth Games. This is our second year at Liberty University and we are excited to have you all here in Lynchburg, Virginia, competing in what will be the best Commonwealth Games yet. Along with Liberty University, the City of Lynchburg, we at Virginia Amateur Sports have planned a weekend full of fun and excitement for everyone.

Summer 2017

Dear Virginia Commonwealth Games Participant: On behalf of the United States Olympic Committee, I am pleased to welcome you to the Virginia Commonwealth Games. Since its inception, this festival has not only raised awareness of Olympic sports, but also acted as a vehicle to motivate positive lifestyle choices, inspire the pursuit of education and stress the importance of family and community. The State Games are driven by the potential to positively influence young athletes, the leaders of tomorrow. Many of our Olympians and Paralympians were inspired to become elite athletes because of their participation in community-based programs such as the State Games. These programs play an integral role in the development of the athletic skills and the values of many young people who dream of representing Team USA in future Olympic and Paralympic Games. The USOC wishes success to all competitors. The sportsmanship, fair play and respect that you demonstrate during the State Games can establish a pattern that will serve you for the rest of your life. Your hard work and dedication prove you are already on the path towards becoming a champion both in sport and life. Best regards,

Liberty University has opened the doors to their world-class facilities to create an atmosphere that mimics the Olympic Village, and to foster an environment that promotes the best of competition and sportsmanship during the Virginia Commonwealth Games. Athletes: Go out there and play hard, have fun, and display exceptional sportsmanship! My college football coach, Cal McCombs, would always say “when you leave this field and are out in the community remember who you are and who you represent”. Remember those words and live a life to make a difference for yourself and others. Coaches: Support these young men and women as they learn some of the most important life lessons under your leadership. Be an example for them to emulate. Parents: Cheer hard and set an example for our young athletes. Help make this experience a positive one that your child remembers for a lifetime. Please, enjoy the time with your family and all that the City of Lynchburg and Liberty University have to offer. Finally, a HUGE THANK YOU to all the coaches, officials, and volunteers that have come together to make these games the best yet! Sincerely,

Scott A. Blackmun Chief Executive Officer

ATHLETE PROFILE FROM THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES TO THE BIG LEAGUES:

The Journey of Lynchburg’s Brandon Inge by Adrian Salas

the people of Detroit, easing his transition to the big leagues. Brandon was also praised for his defensive adaptability on the field, changing positions in order to earn more playing time. He was not a catcher coming out of college, but when the Tigers drafted him they made it clear that this was the position they wanted him to play. He was able to make the adjustment and picked up arguably the toughest position to play on the diamond. Inge was so effective behind the plate that he quickly worked his way through the minor league system and eventually became the team’s starting catcher. As an undersized infielder and pitcher, Brandon Inge was overlooked by many scouts coming out of Brookville high school in Lynchburg. What these scouts didn’t know was he would more than make up for his size with an exceptional work ethic on his way to a successful MLB career. Growing a couple inches and putting on some extra weight after high school didn’t hurt either.

The versatile Inge’s professional accomplishments include feats that the average player never gets to see. His favorite memory was the Tigers’ 2006 run to the World Series. His stellar finish to the season helped the team make their first title appearance in 22 years. Brandon’s most productive season came in 2009, when a red-hot start earned him a spot in the all-star game as well as the Home Run Derby.

Inge graduated from Brookville in 1995. He went on to earn second-team All-American honors at VCU prior to being drafted by the Detriot Tigers in the second round of the 1998 MLB Draft. He stayed in Detroit for the majority of his 13-year career before signing with the Athletics and Pirates at the tail end. At Brookville, Inge also played basketball and football but baseball is where he truly excelled. Before the school retired his number 7 jersey, Brandon earned the honor of representing the West region in the 1994 Commonwealth Games of Virginia. These all-star teams are comprised of the best high school baseball players from around the state, requiring a tryout to make the team. "Brandon at the high school level was ... just that rare athlete that you don't see a lot of times," said former Cave Spring coach Roger White, who served as Inge's Commonwealth Games head coach. In addition to his strong arm, Brandon owned an impressive vertical jump at the time, measuring over 40 inches. Inge was a fan favorite in Detroit due to his flashy glove and blue-collar mentality. He notes that the people from his hometown of Lynchburg share the latter trait with 14

- Wally Beagle, Commonwealth Games High School All Star Baseball Coordinator

Since retiring, Brandon has enjoyed watching his sons Tyler and Chase play, whose names he has tattooed on his forearms. “Being able to watch my kids play, that’s the most important thing to me. I probably hold it higher in the memory banks than playing in the major leagues,” says Inge. He has helped coach their Lynchburg little league teams as well as helping to form a transitional league for kids moving on from the coach pitch level. In 2015 Brandon reunited with his high school program, becoming an assistant coach at Brookville. 15

STATE GAMES OF AMERICA COMING TO LYNCHBURG IN 2019! Virginia Amateur Sports (VAS), Liberty University and the City of Lynchburg worked together to secure the State Games of America for Virginia, slated to premiere July 31-Aug. 4, 2019. The National Congress of State Games (NCSG) Board heard presentations in Atlantic City and completed a site visit from three cities vying to host the event. The Olympic-style event features more than 30 individual competitions between medal winners from other State Games events throughout the country and will be held in conjunction with the Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University. The State Games of America are held every two years, the 2017 Games will be held in Grand Rapids, MI – August 3-6. A team from LU, Lynchburg City, and the VAS staff will be attending the week long festivities in preparation of hosting in 2019. Virginia Amateur Sports, organizers of the Virginia Commonwealth Games, stated they are honored and excited to begin the planning for 2019. The new partnership with Liberty University and the City of Lynchburg and the 28 years of successful State Games history has prepared them to organize this national event. VAS boasts the world class sports facilities at Liberty University, the outstanding community and corporate support, municipality commitment and the local organizing committee’s expertise in helping to make Lynchburg and Liberty University the ideal choice to host such a large scale event. Lynchburg Mayor Joan Foster stated “I think it proves that the City of Lynchburg is well-poised to host a national sports event like the State Games and that along with all of the other wonderful tourism assets in this region we can now add sports tourism to the list. Everyone working together made this possible.” Jerry Falwell, President of Liberty University stated, “The fact that the State Games of America will be held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia is a testament to what can happen when organizations work together for the common good. Had it not been for teams of people rolling up their sleeves to accomplish a goal without being concerned about who received the credit, this would have never happened.”

VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Previous State Games of America have had an economic impact of up to $25 million on the region where they were held, with as many as 10,000 room nights at area hotels. About 15,000 athletes from 32 different states are expected to participate in the 2019 State Games of America in Lynchburg. EAT AT THESE LOCAL RESTAURANTS THAT SUPPORT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES!

Vernell "Bimbo" Coles Vernell “Bimbo” Coles will be the featured guest speaker at the 2017 Virginia Commonwealth Games opening ceremonies. The event will be held in the Vines Center at Liberty University at 7 PM on Friday, July 21.

Coles was a standout athlete at Greenbrier East High School in Lewisburg, West Virginia and went on to play college basketball for the Virginia Tech Hokies for four seasons (1986– 1990). “Selecting Bimbo Coles to be our 2017 Olympic speaker was an easy one,” says VAS President Dan Foutz. “We searched for a local Olympian that our participants and supporters would recognize. He was Virginia Tech’s first Olympian in any sport, inducted into both the Virginia Tech and the Virginia Sports Halls of Fame and remains the all-time leader in scoring and assists at Virginia Tech and the Metro Conference. This coupled with a successful 14-year career in the NBA and earning a Bronze medal as a player on the 1988 United States Men’s Basketball team in Seoul, South Korea made Bimbo a great get!” Following his historic career with the Hokies, Coles was selected early in the 2nd round of the 1990 NBA draft. Over his 14-year NBA career, Coles would suit up for the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. Coles served as an assistant coach and scout for the Miami Heat and was part of their front office. 30

In addition to Bimbo Coles’ induction into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in January, the Virginia Tech athletics department recently appointed him to the position of Director of Student-Athlete Support and Community Engagement, which includes a strong emphasis on student athlete mentoring. Vernell received his signature nickname from his cousin, who really enjoyed the country song “Bimbo” by Faron Young, and affectionately gave the name to him. Bimbo currently resides in Lewisburg, West Virginia with his wife and four children. He is the Executive Director at The GROW Project, Inc. and Co-owner at CountryRoads CrossFit. 2017 VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH GAMES at Liberty University
