May 30, 2018 Dear Participant: On behalf of the United States Olympic Committee, I am pleased to welcome you to the State Games. Since its inception, this festival has not only raised awareness of Olympic sports, but also spread the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. The State Games are designed to encourage a healthy physical and mental lifestyle and to bring out the best in young athletes, like yourself. Many U.S. Olympians and Paralympians were inspired to become elite athletes because of their participation in community-based programs such as the State Games. These programs play an important role in enhancing a passion for sport and the dedication it takes to achieve the dream of representing Team USA at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Your journey starts here. The USOC wishes success to all competitors. The sportsmanship, fair play and respect that you demonstrate during competition will set a positive example for future athletes in your community. May you find joy in the game, give your best effort and continue to be a champion, both in sport and life. Best regards,

Susanne Lyons Chief Executive Officer

2018 VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH GAMES at Liberty University

July 2018 Greetings Athletes, Coaches, and Friends, As Chairman of the Virginia Amateur Sports Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to the 29th year of the Virginia Commonwealth Games. This is our third year at Liberty University and we are excited to have you all here in Lynchburg, Virginia, competing in what will be the best Commonwealth Games yet! Along with Liberty University, the City of Lynchburg, and our sponsors, everyone at Virginia Amateur Sports has planned a weekend full of fun and excitement. Liberty University has opened the doors to their world-class facilities to create an atmosphere that mimics the Olympic Village. We aim to foster an environment that promotes the best of competition and sportsmanship during the Virginia Commonwealth Games. Athletes, Coaches, and Parents - My friend and college teammate at VMI, Jamaal Walton, is the Associate Athletic Director at College of Charleston. He lives by the saying lift as we climb. This simple yet profound saying could have a great impact if we choose to implement it into each of our lives. Athletes: this means as you work to better your skills, bring your teammates along. Help your fellow teammates be the best they can be! This will help the entire team grow to be better athletes. Coaches: lift your players both mentally and physically. If everyone works toward a larger common goal, the results will be unparalleled. Parents: lift and support your sons and daughters in their journey to become the best they can be. As a society, if we can all lift others up as we continue with our own successes, we can make a powerful positive change for everyone we encounter along the way. Finally, a HUGE thank you to all the coaches, oďŹƒcials, and volunteers that have come together to make these Games the best yet! Sincerely,

Adam Peters, CFPÂŽ Chairman of the Virginia Amateur Sports Board of Directors

2018 VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH GAMES at Liberty University

How they got started In 1989, the Governor's Commission on Sports & Physical Fitness passed an endorsement that Virginia Amateur Sports (VAS) would serve as the state organization to hold the State Games of Virginia. In 1992, the Games were officially named the Commonwealth Games of Virginia. In 1990, the initial Games drew 4,400 athletes competing in 29 sports. More than 245,000 athletes, their families plus spectators have participated during the past 28 years. Credentials VAS is a member of the National Congress of State Games (NCSG) and is sanctioned and recognized by the NCSG, the Virginia High School League (VHSL), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and by the United States Olympic Committee as a member of their USOC multi sport organizational council. Funding In 1990, when the Games started, VAS had secured a $175,000 grant from the state to launch the Games. By 2001, VAS lost all state funding. Despite the loss of state funding, VAS perservered and expanded its staff and programs. With zero funding from the state, local governments increased their financial support in addition to providing fields and facilities. VAS tries to keep the cost to participate in the Games minimal, with the majority of funding coming from sponsors. The Games have had four title sponsors in their history Cor-East, Southern Health/Coventry, Subway and now Liberty University. Support With its dedication to a tradition of excellence & with a staff of four, VAS relies heavily on outside support. That support includes over 1,000 volunteers, 60+ volunteer sport coordinators, a volunteer local organizing committee made up of individuals from supporting localities, other business professionals, volunteers from the medical profession field, security and police departments, and the VAS board of directors. The Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University Going into its 29th year, the Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University, this annual event is held in July (for most sports) and is open to all ages and skill levels. From archery to wrestling, this event offers sports competition venues for 55+ different Olympic, Pan American, and recreational sports. The Games represent the true spirit of amateur athletics. For some, this celebration of sport is a stepping stone for following the dream of representing the United States in the Olympic Games. For others, the Games are a place to compete in a favorite pastime. Regardless of the age or skill of the athlete, the Games provide the pure pleasure of competing for the love of sport. The Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University are more than sports events; they go much deeper. The Games teach values such as teamwork and good sportsmanship, which are important components of everyday life. The Games encourage athletes to develop and improve their physical talent and competitive abilities. Lastly, the ideals of the Games promote physical fitness and encourage Virginians to adopt a healthy lifestyle. The success of the Games is immeasurable, in today's semantics - priceless

Peaksview Park gets additions for the Games! The City of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation is proud to partner with Virginia Amateur Sports to host the Virginia Commonwealth Games. One of our department’s goals is to promote Lynchburg as a great place for athletes and their families to live, work and Play. Over the past two years we have welcomed thousands of visitors to our city from across the state to our parks and athletic facilities. We have demonstrated our commitment to the success of the Games through continued investment in our parks and athletic facilities which our residents are able to enjoy year-round. The kindness and support of our residents, and our continued commitment to recycling and utilizing our best resources, has helped make these renovations and improvements possible. This year we are extremely excited to bring adult rugby to Peaks View Park. Over the last six months crews have been working hard to make Peaks View field #10 Lynchburg’s first official Rugby field. Thanks to the kindness of one special city resident, Mr. Moomaw. He allowed the City to install a 1500 ft. access road across his property on Irvington Road over to Field #3. The access road was then used to haul approximately 500 truckloads of fill material and topsoil to be used to build the field. The soil for this project was recycled from Lynchburg City Stadium when the Lynchburg Hillcats renovated their baseball field. The new grass Rugby/Football field includes a new irrigation system and the sod is scheduled to be delivered in May in order for the field to be ready for play during this year’s Commonwealth Games! Those athletes whom have participated in the past Commonwealth Games Adult and Youth Softball Tournaments also have something to look forward to this year. We installed a brand new batting cage next to Field #4. The batting cage will be available for athletes and coaches to use to warm up or practice in while at the park, and residents and local teams will have access to the batting cage year-round.

In addition to the improvements to our fields, a major renovation to the Ardmore Drive access bridge was completed. This bridge will allow food trucks, vendors, and maintenance crews’ better access to the park to provided quality services to the hundreds of families and athletes that will visit Peaks View Park as they compete in athletic tournaments and events. Families will no longer have to leave the park to get something tasty to eat while waiting for their next ballgame. Each year we love hearing from visiting families about how much they have enjoyed visiting Peaks View Park, because it has something for everyone to enjoy. We wish all the athletes the best of luck in the Games and we hope you and your family enjoy your visit to Lynchburg and Peaks View Park!

ATHLETE PROFILE FROM THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES TO A NATIONAL STAGE:

Athlete of the Year Spotlight by N'taezha Davis

In addition to winning the Athlete of the Year for the state of Virginia in the Male Youth - Under 18 category, Daylin Toms was also awarded the National Youth Male Athlete of the Year award by the National Congress of State Games. Heileigh Vencill, from Gundy, Virginia, was awarded the Athlete of the Year for the Female Youth-Under 18 category. Heileigh plays basketball for the Grundy Gladiators and was nominated for her outstanding work on and off the court. (Not pictured)

(above: Lee Beaumont with his past VA Commonwealth Games medals.)

The Athlete of the Year Program recognizes outstanding athletes from the Virginia Commonwealth Games. Athletes of the Year are chosen based on the following criteria: participation in the VA Commonwealth Games and medals won, sportsmanship, attitude and effort, and more. After the 28th Annual Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University, Daylin Toms, Heileigh Vencill, and Lee Beaumont were awarded this prestigious accolade. Daylin Toms, a West Virginia native, has been wrestling since the age of 4 and was considered one of the best in his age division. He handled every match before him as a test to be passed, unknowing of the one soon to come, this one outside of the mat. At the age of 13, it would be discovered that Toms had contracted Encephalitis, a disease which symptoms heavily mirror the flu. He was told by neurologists that he would have to relearn every piece of information he had ever known and could rule sports out of his future forever. After moving and switching neurologists, his new doctor ordered him to slowly immerse himself in the sport he once loved. Toms would start competing again locally, gaining his confidence along the way. This past July, Toms competed in the Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University. He used his moves to pin all of his opponents to walk away with a gold medal. After accomplishing such a feat, he was then nominated by his high school coach, Anthony Shrewsberry, for the VA Commonwealth Games Youth Male Athlete of the Year award in which he won. 2018 VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH GAMES at Liberty University

Lee Beaumont, a hometown hero hailing from Lynchburg, Virginia, was awarded the Athlete of the Year for the Male 18 Years & Older category. He competed in powerlifting, indoor triathlon, and track and field. Beaumont trained relentlessly for his events and is a big fan of the games.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES & STATE GAMES OF AMERICA - FIRST IMPRESSIONS As Virginia Amateur Sports prepares for 2019 with State Games of America (SGA) to be held in Virginia for the first time in history, as well as the 30th anniversary of the Virginia Commonwealth Games, one tennis enthusiast reflects on being there for the inaugural year of both events. Susan Russell began playing tennis when it was introduced to her in the eighth grade at school in Houston, Texas and her love for the sport led her to play, compete, and coach at many levels. She became the first USTA verifier in the Roanoke area, and helped bring the sport of tennis to the very first Virginia Commonwealth Games in 1990. After supporting the grassroots efforts of adding tennis to the Commonwealth Games the first year, Susan also started competing in tennis in the Games, earning a medal and qualifying for the first State Games of America in 1999 held in St. Louis, Missouri. Susan and her tennis partners, Jim and Carol Johnson, wanted to be a part of the initial first State Games of America, to represent Virginia, and thought “What have we got to lose?” she says.

“We didn’t prepare any differently, but I was more nervous because I didn’t know the competition, like the other tournaments in Virginia.” she says. Susan proclaimed the venues were impressive and competition was strong, and although they had some weather issues and had to move their tennis games to a different facility inside, they powered through to win the gold medal! “Going to the very first State Games of America, and then coming back to work the local tournaments helped me with encouraging others, especially kids, to do well and showing them with hard work, they can make it to the national level as well.” Susan continues to have a strong presence in the tennis community, and the Commonwealth Games, through working, volunteering and competing. 28

State Games of America The Olympic-style event features competition between medal winners from other State Games events throughout the country and will be held in place of the Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University in 2019. The State Games of America are held every two years. This is the first time Virginia has been selected to host the national festival, slated for July 31- 4, 2019. Like the Virginia Commonwealth Games, the 2019 State Games of America will also be a community effort including Virginia Amateur Sports, Liberty University and the City of Lynchburg. “The National Congress of State Games board is excited with the selection of Liberty University and looks forward to the athletes and families having the opportunity to see the wonderful world class, Division 1 facilities, and the enriched culture that Liberty University and the City of Lynchburg has to offer. The people at Liberty University and the City of Lynchburg are ready and willing to do everything in their power to make these the best games possible,” stated Dan Duffy, President of the National Congress of State Games (2017). Joan Foster, Lynchburg Mayor at the time of the Lynchburg SGA announcement said, “I think it proves that the City of Lynchburg is well-poised to host a national sports event like the State Games and that along with all of the other wonderful tourism assets in this region we can now add sports tourism to the list.” All Virginia athletes, regardless of winning a medal to qualify, will be eligible to participate in the 2019 State Games of America.
