OPENING & WELCOME WHAT IS THE NATIONAL CONGRESS OF STATE GAMES AND STATE GAMES OF AMERICA? Sport Organization Council. The NCSG is comprised of 30 Summer State Games and 10 Winter State Games programs, and its mission is to promote health, fitness, and character building through multi-sport competitions and physical activities. The NCSG also owns and operates its signature event, the State Games of America.
(above: Kandace McIvor of Forest, VA is a scholar-athlete who competed in Track and Field at the State of America Games in 2013 and 2017, as well as in the Virginia Commonwealth Games.)
Imagine hearing the Star-Spangled Banner playing with gold, silver, and bronze draped around the necks of the best American athletes at the pinnacle sporting event of the world: the Olympics. This contest and celebration has been welcomed into the homes of Americans for decades as they all watch in awe the triumphs and heroics of our Summer and Winter Games athletes and their stories. Americans have always bonded over the Olympics, the way it brings the country together, and are able to relate to these athletes so well because, at one time, they were the little leaguer down the road or the child in the learn to skate program. Every star had to get their start somewhere. That is what a group of sports organizers realized, understanding that someone needed to bridge that gap and give the American people – young and old – a chance to live out that Olympic dream and participate in these wonderful sports. With that dream in mind, the State Games movement was born. The ideas of the State Games and its movement is simple: to allow athletes of all ages and abilities to compete in a multi-sport, Olympic-style event. This does serve a purpose for the United States Olympic Committee (referred to further as the USOC), as it keeps the Olympic spirit alive during off years, but also helps feed the pipeline of athletes in traditionally Olympic based sports while promoting the State Games mission at the same time. The movement was started in 1978 with the state of New York, an active member today. The movement continued to grow, and the National Congress of State Games was formed in 1986 to serve as the official association of all the State Games organizations and states. As a membership-based organization, the National Congress of State Games (referred to further as NCSG) helps provide structure and support to all the member states. The NCSG is also a member of the USOC Multi

Operating on a bi-annual basis, the State Games of America (referred to further as SGA) is the crown jewel of the NCSG. This event, created in 1999, gives athletes who participate in their State Games program a chance to compete nationally and face off with athletes from around the country. This further emulates the Olympic movement as attendees get to know other athletes, interact with people from different parts of the country, other cultures, explore other sports, and participate in a grand Opening Ceremony and other athlete events. Additionally, this gives participants something to strive for while competing on a state-wide level. If a participant wins a medal in the two years leading up to a SGA, or wins a medal in a previous SGA, they qualify for the upcoming event! It is exciting for everybody involved and adds a unique feature that other sporting tournaments do not offer. So far, there have been over 90,000 participants in the SGA since 1999. Host cities can also expect something in return with an economic impact on their community totaling over $10 million on average. The upcoming 2019 SGA in Lynchburg, Virginia and the campus of Liberty University is expected to bring in over 14,000 athletes to the area and create one of the most memorable SGA’s yet! Moving forward, the State Games of America and National Congress of State Games are excited for the possibilities to come and to continuously engage Americans with a healthy lifestyle and character building opportunities that sport brings. They are proud of their rich history and ready to ensure success for years to come. Lynchburg, Virginia welcomes everybody to their town July 31 – August 4 for the 2019 State Games of America and looks forward to continuing the tradition and keeping the torch burning.
“A highlight for me at the 2017 State Games of America was being chosen as the flag bearer to represent Virginia in the opening ceremonies. That was a great honor. I am excited to be competing in the 2019 State Games of America in Lynchburg, VA, because it is my hometown" - Kandace McIvor
2019 STATE GAMES OF AMERICA
OPENING & WELCOME August 2019
Greetings athletes, coaches, and friends, As the chairman of Virginia Amateur Sports Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to the 30th year of Virginia Amateur Sports and 20th anniversary of the State Games of America. This is our fourth year at Liberty University and we are excited to have you all here in Lynchburg, Virginia, competing in what will be the best Games yet. Along with Liberty University, the City of Lynchburg, we at Virginia Amateur Sports have planned a weekend full of fun and excitement for everyone. Liberty University has opened the doors to their world-class facilities to create an atmosphere that mimics the Olympic Village, and to foster an environment that promotes the best of competition and sportsmanship during the State Games of America. Athletes: Go out there and play hard, have fun, and display exceptional sportsmanship! My college football coach, Cal McCombs, would always say “when you leave this field and are out in the community remember who you are and who you represent”. Remember those words and live a life to make a difference for yourself and others. Coaches: Support these young men and women as they learn some of the most important life lessons under your leadership. Be an example for them to emulate. Parents: Cheer hard and set an example for our young athletes. Help make this experience a positive one that your child remembers for a lifetime. Please, enjoy the time with your family and all that the City of Lynchburg and Liberty University have to offer. Finally, a HUGE THANK YOU to all the coaches, officials, and volunteers that have come together to make these games the best yet! Sincerely,
Adam Peters, CFP® Chairman of the Virginia Amateur Sports Board of Directors

FEATURED PROFILE PICKLEBALL SET TO BE A HIT AT STATE GAMES OF AMERICA
Athlete & Sport Spotlight by KatieGwen Osborn
The name pickleball is one that may raise a few eyebrows. Sources claim that the name was derived from that of the Pritchard family dog, Pickles, or from the term "pickle boat". This is a reference to the last boat to return to the harbor with its catch. However, according to Joan Pritchard, Joel's wife, the name came because she said that it reminded her of the pickle boat crews, where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of the crews of other boats. She said that the idea that the name came from their dog named Pickles was nice, but Pickles hadn’t been a part of the family yet and wouldn’t be until two years after the invention of the game. According to Joan, it was the dog, rather, that was named after the game.
(above: Joe Lindsoe with his past VA Commonwealth Games medals.)
With State Games of America coming to Virginia, on the 30th anniversary of the Virginia Commonwealth Games, there will be players from most other state games coming together this year to compete and play in Lynchburg. Not a stranger to the games, Joe Lindsoe – a pickleball player, will be one of the oldest athletes competing this year. Joe will turn 90 years old on the first day of the State Games of America pickleball tournament. According to Judy Bowman (Pickleball Sport Director), Joe “lives in Lynchburg and started playing about 8 years ago. He was an avid tennis player, a retired Pastor, has been married for over 60 years and just overall a great man.” Another notable player, this year, is Nathan Tang. Nathan a 14-year-old from Scottsdale, Arizona, will be among the youngest to compete in the pickleball tournament. Nathan is registered to play singles, also partnering with his Dad, Lester, in men’s doubles and his Mom, Amy, in the mixed doubles competition. Invented in the 1960s as a backyard game, pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two to four players use solid paddles to hit a ball over a net, the paddles are made of wood or a composite material and the ball is similar to that of a Wiffle Ball. The sport shares similar features to that of racquet sports with several modifications made the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, with a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis. The game now known as pickleball, got its start in the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Former Washington Lieutenant Governor and State Representative Joel Pritchard and his friends started the game after coming home to bored families on a Saturday afternoon. They attempted to set up badminton, but the shuttlecock was missing. Instead, they improvised with a Wiffle ball, lowered the badminton net, and created paddles out of plywood found in a nearby shed. 2019 STATE GAMES OF AMERICA
The sport is the fastest-growing in the U.S., with more than 2.8 million players and a 12% increase in the past year, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. In Virginia, it has only gained popularity in the last six years. It has picked up popularity quickly and is currently one of the more popular individual sports in the Virginia Commonwealth Games. A few years ago, due to the popularity, new courts were opened at the Ivy Hill Golf Club in Forest, VA. Judy Bowman, Pickleball Coordinator for the VA Commonwealth Games, said “It’s a lot of fun. It can be competitive and recreational. It has both elements to it. Some people just play for the exercise, it’s a social game and a great way to meet friends. I think it combines the best of everything.”

The 2019 State Games of America is proud to partner with Kroger and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to “Torch Hunger” in the Lynchburg community. Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste campaign has been committed to ending hunger in our communities and eliminating waste across their company by 2025. Did you know that 40% of all food produced in the United States is thrown away, yet 1 in 8 people regularly struggle with hunger? This unacceptable reality led Kroger, America’s grocer, to take a national stand against hunger through initiatives in their local markets. The goal for this “Torch Hunger” campaign is to collect a literal ton (2,000 pounds) of food and hygiene products.
We need your help to make an impact far beyond the arena of competition during these State Games of America. As you compete and cheer on your family members, friends, and fellow athletes, please remember those who are competing with hunger daily. Thank you for helping the 2019 State Games of America, Kroger, and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank “Torch Hunger” in the Lynchburg community! Campus Drop-Off Locations: Look for the Ford Trucks in the LaHaye Student Center Parking Lot (Aug 2-4) & Outside the Football Indoor Practice Facility (Aug 2-3).
