Brew Hub Team In April of 2017, Ronny and Lori Steele embarked upon a journey with a mission. They were eager to promote area breweries, as well as the food trucks and musicians that add to the culture that craft brewery enthusiasts have come to love! Both Ronny and Lori love taking advantage of the fun and good times that Southwest Virginia has to offer. They love the great outdoors, sport, and adventure. But their love of beer, food, and local music led them to publish the first edition of Virginia Brew Hub Magazine! It would be the first of many editions to come that not only spotlights the area’s fine craft breweries and covers local brewery news, but that also promotes the local musicians and food vendors often found contributing to one of the best evenings out that Ronny and Lori can imagine. With Virginia Brew Hub as your guide, join them in discovering the lively and delicious world of the craft brewery scene right here in our own back yard! By Vickie Holt

Growing The Beer Hub of the Roanoke Valley By Michael Galliher

What do cities like Asheville, Bend, Denver, San Diego, and Portland all have in common? They are considered among the best craft beer communities in the nation. Now, two cities in Virginia are beginning to join in on the fun! First Richmond, and now Roanoke, have started making some noise on the craft beer grapevine. Richmond has long been established as the home of Virginia’s oldest craft brewing company; Legend Brewery. Since then, Legend has been joined by Hardywood, Ardent Craft Ales, The Answer, Triple Crossing Brewing, and The Veil Brewing Co., just to name a few that have popped up over the years. Roanoke, on the other hand is, still in the infant stages of its craft beer industry development. A little over a decade ago, the Roanoke Valley wasn’t usually a traveler’s first choice of destination. For those get-away day-trippers and week-enders looking for fun, entertainment, and delicious craft brews, the valley just didn’t have much to offer other than the landmark star that sits on top of Mill Mountain. In the late 2000’s, however, Roanoke’s leadership saw an opportunity to reinvent the area. It was during this time that local brewers started thinking about business plans that would fit into the new vision. Early developers even tried to attract and land west coast breweries like Deschutes Brewery and Ballast Point. What makes craft breweries such a hot idea for any 6

area is that they are not only a type of industrial operation, they are also people-magnets. Many people take pride in local-made products. Curiosity alone often brings folks into these establishments, just to try a pint or two. Word of mouth then spreads like wildfire throughout the community, which of course leads to more people coming into the area that likely wouldn’t have visited in the first place. It’s been a few years, now, and the Roanoke Valley is starting to reap the benefits of the crafts beers bringing people in. And that’s one of the best things that can be said about the craft beer industry. It brings people together. Although brewers are competitive by nature, they’re all about coming together to help the community. John F. Kennedy once said, “A rising tide lifts all boats!” That is exactly what these breweries have been doing in areas that were once less traveled. Once a brewery moves in and opens for business, the crowds that come create potential for other businesses to also succeed. This can create small pockets of prosperity as people come, stay, shop, and play. In the Roanoke Valley people are visiting places like Callaway, Boones Mill, Vinton, Salem, Botetourt, Smith Mountain Lake, and of course Downtown Roanoke more often than they used to. It comes as no surprise, and it’s certainly no coincidence, that all of these areas now have their own craft breweries. The western part of Downtown

01.03 • Aug/Sept 2017 • VaBrewHub.com

Roanoke is home to both Soaring Ridge Craft Brewers and Big Lick Brewing Co. This part of town has also been so revived and invigorated that it also now supports new apartment developments, restaurants, and people. Of these two breweries, Big Lick Brewing Co. is most recent. But they are already seeing so much success that they’re expanding and moving even closer to Soaring Ridge. Even before Big Lick moves into their new home, they and Soaring Ridge have already come together to create an event they call “The Growler Team Relay”. This fun event will only serve to bring more people to the area. And now that both breweries are within walking distance of each other, as well as everything else downtown has to offer, both are sure to benefit greatly. The Growler Team Relay, however, is not the first occasion on which either Big Lick or Soaring Ridge have joined hands with other breweries. “We shared our business plans with Twin Creeks to help them get open,” said Bryan Summerson, one of the owners and brewer of Big Lick. “And Caleb (owner and brewer at Hammer and Forge) came in and helped out, his place is almost the carbon copy of our original brewery.” Soaring Ridge also believes working together has been a common practice of a lot of breweries, especially at the local level, to help communities to grow. “You have people very willing to help each other out whenever possible; that

01.03 • Aug/Sept 2017 • VaBrewHub.com

help can range from a quick answer to another brewery asking ‘Hey, we ran into this issue, how did you fix it?’ to actually physically showing up and helping each other out,” states Claire Ainsworth; taproom manager of Soaring Ridge. She went on to say that the phrase that gets thrown around a lot is “cooperative competition”. “We recognize needing each other to drive regional tourism and some genuinely friendly competition will ultimately bring out the best in each business. Craft breweries all have the same passion for hand crafted beer and the same desire to see the craft beer industry continue to succeed.” Cooperative competition is exactly what has allowed us to see the craft beer boom we have seen over the past five years. America now has over 5,000 independent craft breweries, which contributes to $250+ billion of the total beer industry. It’s also had a huge impact on local communities. Roanoke, too, has seen the popularity grow. We’ve seen how it has helped enhance the area; helping other businesses, attracting new businesses, creating jobs, reviving neighborhoods, and growing community pride. When people think the craft beer industry can’t be an economic driver, I think about the other cities that are considered “beer cities,” and how much they have added to those communities. I think that we can all raise our glasses to that and say “cheers” for the future.

Keepin’ It Local: My Hopservation As early as the arrival of the first colonists, beer has been a part of Virginia’s culture. Throughout the 18th century, the “Golden Age” of beer flourished. At every crossroad or river crossing, there was a tavern or an alehouse and even most plantations had their own malt house and distillery. The Civil War brought more challenges at the end of the century, and then came Prohibition with the arrival of the next. Through it all, production over the years has ebbed and flowed. But despite the trying times, brewing has always made a comeback. To say that beer is “deeply rooted” in Virginia’s history would be a huge understatement. This latest craft beer revolution celebrates those roots by bringing back some of the brewing techniques and methods of their forefathers. Many brewers are even re-creating old recipes found in various historical documents and paying homage to local history when naming their brews. At the same time, brewers are creating new, original recipes utilizing all sorts of locally grown fruits and vegetables, even buying locally grown hops for that fresh and authentic taste. State Agriculture and Forestry Secretary Basil Gooden commented that “Virginia craft brewers have really started to hone in on the terroir of their region, and some are developing distinctly Virginian beer.” Many people are calling this the “farm-to-glass” movement. There are many benefits from the “big guys” getting into the craft beer scene (i.e. consistency in flavor & access to ingredients, etc.). There’s something to be said for knowing what you’ll get when you’re unfamiliar with what an area has to offer. On the flipside, at locally owned brewpubs you’re always guaranteed a unique experience. Exclusive and seasonal brews offer you the opportunity to sample the unconventional or enjoy the unlimited local flavors. Mmm… tastes like memories! And it just so happens that the Roanoke Valley is full of amazing, one-of-a-kind brewpubs with distinct character, ready to show you the hospitality small businesses are known for and that you deserve. Drink local & drink with purpose. It’s beer-thirty somewhere. 8

A Taste of Belgium in Virginia By Chaz Blevins, Certified Cicerone ®

Wander through your local craft bottle shop and you may find an obscure wooden shelf comprised of ancient alchemic dusty bottles enladeyed with bright pastel hued foreign and olde english calligraphy, some even wrapped in tissue paper with elaborate ribbons. For me, this scene always conjures memories of the colorful jar of hard candies that my grandmother always kept, or of the cloth wrapped mason jars filled with bright colored fruit preserves and jams that we would see at the local roadside farmer’s market. At heart, that’s exactly what those bottles represent. Take a closer look at these foreign elixirs and you will discover that some of them draw breath from the Kingdom of Belgium. A small country, around the size of Maryland, with one of the deepest and richest brewing histories in the world. Very much like local agriculture, Belgian brewing is a living example of doing things the hard/ old fashioned way. Beers forged out of true labor of love, tradition, and often necessity from a time of when livings were forged out of a learned craft that was perfected through time, and handed down to the next generation through the ages. Though labor and time intensive, the innovative and experimental brewing methods that developed, along with no reinheitsgebot (the German beer purity law) around to dictate what ingredients a beer could have, Belgian brewing tradition created a rainbow of diversity in style, complexity, and flavor. Belgians draw similarities to wine, not only in complexity and fermentation technique, but how each vintage or batch can differ vastly in taste and quality. This makes every Belgian brew essentially “small batch”. Though far from a mass factory engineered and produced product, the Belgian influence in both styles and brewing techniques has inspired American brewers to take up the reigns and develop some of the most unique and creative beers to date. Before going further, let’s address the “spicy, clove, fruit” taste that is predominately unique to Belgian beers, though there are some German beers of similar character. Yeast is the single celled organism that eats sugar, converting it to alcohol and CO2, while contributing to flavor. Though today there is a plethora of cultured yeast strains, each possesses different flavors, it wasn’t so earlyon in brewing. Historically, brewers would pass around a strain of yeast from one brewery to the next. Sharing local brewing tips and methods along the way, a local terroir was established. This created yeast that thrived in a particular environment, like warmer fermentation temperature or higher alcohol levels, and produced flavors that were inherent to that particular local area. Top fermenting yeast that had fruity ester flavors of dried fruit and very mild phenolic flavors that could be described as light clove or peppery, are the staple of Belgian beers. However there are some Belgium beers that take on a life of their own using wild yeast strains and microorganisms to drastically change flavor. Though an exact history of these amazing hand crafted ales could take up several novels, let’s take a very brief look at some Virginia craft brews that were inspired by these Belgian styles. *This only highlights a few of Virginia craft brewery Belgians. Please reference our brewery map located in this issue to visit your local brewery and see what Belgian inspired beers they have on tap.*

Witbier

The witbier style is a wheat beer spiced with curacao and

01.03 • Aug/Sept 2017 • VaBrewHub.com

coriander, with light, full head and a thick mouthfeel. Sticking to tradition, Soaring Ridge Craft Brewer’s White Top has a heaping dose of wheat malt that creates a fluffy white pillow of head. Strong coriander aromatics, and an orange that seems to have more lingering power than traditional curacao, and leads to you always wanting another sip. Add 20 pounds of fresh Virginia blackberries, and this beer is transformed into Berry White, a pink-hued, sought after seasonal brew.

Dubbel

The dubbel style is a malted beer, bearing flavors of candi sugar and dark fruit. The award-winning auburn-hued vixen of a beer, Lustful Maiden by Apocalypse Ale Works, has roasted nutty aromas, balanced hop bitterness, and a lingering caramel apple finish. Pouring with a healthy froth and attenuation, it remains sweet, while not cloying, and a great example of the style.

Belgian Dark Strong Ale

Belgian dark strong ales are some of the highest gravity and malt accentuated beers around. Multiple medal winner at the Virginia Craft Brewers Festival, Chaos Mountain Brewing’s Agents of Chaos exemplifies the style with rich caramel malts, light oats, and a dark fruit background with notes of light fig and dates, finishing with plum and a clean, residual sweetness and alcohol warmth.

Tripel

The tripel style is a highly alcoholic, monastic, golden beer brewed in Belgium. Starr Hill Brewery’s Barrel Aged Tripel has traditional Belgian yeast notes of dried fruit on the nose and the complex barrel characteristics of vanilla and oak. Alcoholic heat is met with notes of bourbon and a cigar sweet finish.

Saison

Saisons were traditionally a spiced beer brewed to rejuvenate seasonal farmhands. Big Lick Brewing Company’s Belle Feine is a saison that takes notes from classic chardonnay that offers light caramel and vanilla aromatics from a sweetened malt. A very subdued coffee flavor showcases honeysuckle and white pear esters from the yeast. This is an attenuative beer that leaves you thirsty for more. Another great example is Twin Creeks Brewing Company’s Lazy Days; a crisp saison, poured with a tight dry head. It showcases light notes of green apple, and lilac aromatics with a strong white grape and pear, subdued alcoholic burn. Their Cucumber Saison is a cucumber infused version of Lazy Days, with the taste of melon stealing the show. It displays a fine complexity of freshness that subdues a majority of the overly dominant flavors in Lazy Days. So, the next time you are in your local bottle shop, ask to be directed to those elaborately decorated bottles and have a taste of true history and artisanry. Or, just make a trip to your local craft brewery and taste history in the making! For more information on Belgian brewing methods, history, and beers, check out our own Belgian Styles Guide at vabrewhub.com and these great books: Michael Jackson’s Great Beers of Belgium, Stan Heironymous’ Brew Like a Monk, and Phil Markowski’s Farmhouse Ales.” 15

• ABV: (Alcohol by volume) Standard beer range from 4% to 8%. • IBU: Hop bitterness is measured in International Bittering Units (IBUs). An American Light Lager may have 5 to 8 IBUs, while an Imperial India Pale Ale (IPA) may have 100 or more IBUs. • Color: All beers have color, whether it’s light, dark, or somewhere in between. The color of beer is determined primarily by the grain used to make the beer. Light-colored grain results in a pale-colored beer; conversely, darker-roasted grains produce darker beers. • Head: None / Poor (Up To 15 Seconds) / Moderate (15 To 60 Seconds) / Good (More Than 60 Seconds) Thin / Foamy / Fluffy / Rocky / Mousse-Like • Aroma / Smell: Alcohol: Not Detectible / Mild / Noticeable / Strong Hops: Citrus / Fruity / Floral / Green / Herbal / Pine / Resinous / Spruce / Sweaty / Spicy / Tropical / Woody • Flavor / Taste: All beers have some level of bitterness. Bitterness in beer is primarily the result of extracting alpha acids from hops during the boiling process. Hop Flavor: Citrus / Fruity / Floral / Green / Herbal / Onion-Garlic / Pine / Resinous / Spruce / Sweaty /

Southern Shine

Southern Shine has been a staple of the craft brewery scene since 2013; playing almost exclusively in the culture and atmosphere that breweries have to offer. Joey Robinson, Justin Howard, and Keith Chumbley make up this dynamic trio that, together, delivers a variety of rock and country hits that is sure to please while it all goes down as smoothly as those delicious craft brews. Southern Shine will be undergoing a small brand change this month, so be sure to look for The Joey Robinson Band when you search for upcoming playdates. The name may be changing, but the music will remain the same mix that has been delighting the craft brewery crowds for the past four years.

Barry Young has been playing music in Roanoke and the surrounding areas since 1985! He’s played with several musicians over the years, and was even part of the popular Journey tribute band, Frontiers. Now, he’s a solo entertainer, serving up a hot variety of popular rock and country hits in the area’s fine breweries, as well as other area venues and events. This talented gentleman brings a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and years to his act; delivering a performance with depth Nov. 11 Chaos Mountain Brewing in and energy that is sure to have craft beer Calloway, VA enthusiasts their tables 01.03 • pounding Aug/Sept 2017for•more! What has been Brewing in the Virginia General Assembly? A Taste of New Alcohol Laws in the Commonwealth by Maxwell H. Wiegard

In case you have not heard, Virginia is for lovers … of craft beer, spirits and wine! In recent years, many craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries have chosen to call Virginia home. To facilitate the growth and expansion of this industry in Virginia, during its 2017 session, the Virginia General Assembly brewed up a number of bills governing to the sale and marketing of alcoholic beverages in the Commonwealth. Let’s take a moment to distill some of the new Virginia laws that will go into effect on July 1, 2017.

Showcasing Virginia Craft Spirits To support the burgeoning craft spirits industry, the General Assembly passed House Bill 2029, which permits distillers to sell bottles of their spirits to consumers at events conducted for the purpose of educating the consuming public about spirits made here in the Commonwealth. Previously, craft distillers were required to direct members of the consuming public interested in purchasing bottles of their spirits to ABC stands or stores. Under this new law, distillers will be able 18

to sell bottles to consumers directly at events such as the Virginia Craft Spirits Showcase, which is scheduled to be held at the Roanoke City Market Building on September 16, 2017.

Craft Brewery and Winery Events and Charitable Events Similarly, to support Virginia craft brewers and wineries in their efforts to educate the consuming public about their products, the General Assembly passed House Bill 2418, which increases the number of special event banquet licenses that a brewery or winery can obtain in a given year from four to eight. Further, House Bill 1694 allows nonprofit organizations that obtain banquet licenses to sell bottles of wine for off-premises consumption at annual fundraising events.

Online Ordering of Bottles To-Go Ordering bottles of Virginia wine and craft beer will be easier than ever before, as of July 1, 2017, when House Bill 1801 goes into effect. Just order online and pull up at the store. You won’t even have to get out of your car. To facilitate the rapidly growing market for online grocery orders, this law authorizes licensed wine and beer retailers to fill online orders by delivering bottles of wine and beer in closed containers for off-premises consumption to a customer’s car.

Historic Movie Theaters As of July 1, 2017, the consuming public also will be able to enjoy a glass of Virginia wine or a pint of Virginia craft beer while watching a film at Virginia’s many historic movie theaters. House Bill 1743 permits “historic cinema houses” built before 1970 to acquire licenses to sell wine and beer for on-premises consumption. As many as one hundred movie theaters located throughout the Commonwealth could qualify as “historic cinema houses.” So, be sure to check the menu at the concession stand when you find yourself taking in a matinée on a hot summer afternoon.

Walking Tours and Pedestrian-Friendly Centers Senate Bill 1108 creates a new permit that makes it easier for tour companies to host culinary walking tours to establishments that provide on-premises consumption of alcohol. The law enables the tour companies to collect as one fee from the participants (1) the licensee’s fee for the food and alcoholic beverages served as part of the tour and (2) the fee for the culinary walking tour service. The tour company must return any fee collected for the food and alcoholic beverages served as part of the tour to the participating establishments. Further, House Bill 1987 creates a new license for a “commercial life center”

to allow consumers to enjoy beverages outside while perusing restaurants, bars, and entertainment areas. To qualify as a “commercial life center,” a property must contain at least 25 acres of land and at least 100,000 square feet of retail space featuring national specialty chain stores and a combination of dining, entertainment, office, residential, or hotel establishments located in a physically integrated outdoor setting that is pedestrian friendly and that is governed by a commercial owners’ association.

Regulation of Wine, Spirits and Bartenders The General Assembly also passed a several bills focused on the regulation of wine, spirits and bartenders in Virginia, in 2017. For example, House Bill 2433 clarifies that cider should be treated as “wine” for alcoholic beverage control purposes. Also, to bring Virginia law in line with the law in other states, the General Assembly passed House Bill 1842, which increases from 101 to 151 maximum proof of liquor that can be sold in Virginia. Finally, to improve patron safety, the General Assembly passed Senate Bill 1150, which requires all bartenders in Virginia to receive training to help them (1) recognize situations that may lead to sexual assault and (2) develop intervention strategies to prevent situations from resulting in sexual assault.

Cheers to the Future! Lovers of Virginia craft beer, craft spirits, wine and cider have a lot to be excited about. So, let’s raise a glass to the future of these industries in Virginia! May the Commonwealth continue to be a great place for the artisans that drive these business to call home!
