This forthcoming book by MIT architectural press focuses on the cities as systems of networks and flows instead of just places in space. Michael Batty introduces an interesting concept in understanding the cities and their complexity. He references upon the complexity sciences, social physics, urban economics, transportation theories, etc in order to provide the reader a thorough understanding of how cities work. A book that will definitely make you think on the collectivity involved in the cities while at the same time emphasize the relevance for future research and planning on this topic.

‘Primitive hut’; the word ‘primitive’ implies an existence of the earliest kind while the word ‘hut’ suggests a simple construction –such as one made of natural materials- and can primarily provide shelter. These two words comprise a standard, by now, of architectural theory since Vitruvius. In his second edition of the book Essay on Architecture, Marc-Antoine Laugier re-introduced this idea while using an image of the hut that he believed it represented the form in which all architecture embodies itself. Joesph Rykwert, in his book “On Adam’s House in Paradise: the idea of the primitive hut in architectural history” examines the principles that compile the meaning behind the idea of the hut. In addition, he seems to infer that the divinity of the hut is tempting but by definition it becomes unreachable by human skills. Thus, he sees the hut as a pattern that is found in a place that he calls ‘paradise’; a human projection of a place that is closely related to memory. In that manner, contemporary architecture may or may not have been imprisoned by liberal studies. This essay will argue that in order to understand the topic at hand it is crucial to investigate the apparent connection or disconnection between place and memory. The reason for that is because through this study one can question the idea of the primitive hut, the way it has established itself in time and whether a proposed shift of that idea can ‘release’ contemporary architecture from its ‘chain barriers’.

Literary methods, such as narrative, character, scenario and poetry writing can be viewed as tools in regards to architectural and urban analysis and design. A relationship between architecture and literature can result and could condition the way one perceives space. This process could be better described through the art of animation; as this is viewed in its early stages where it was constructed through a series of independent drawings. In particular, in order to visualize this process, one can think of a flipbook where each page consists of a drawing, while when you ‘flip’ through the pages quickly, a moving image is created. In this sense, as still images once effected in animations, could it be that the stillness of texts can helps us perceive space?

This project takes as a hypothesis that the future of architectural education is going to change dramatically due to constant rise of technology in the field. It argues that architectural education need not to be confined by the limits suggested by the form of a building. Thus, it presumes that the need to ‘house’ an architecture school may shift to semi-permanent reused structures that can accommodate future needs of the school & the city. Thus, inceptive architecture is viewed as one that returns to basics, embryonic.
