Heritage Village seeks exhibitors to help recreate life in early 1900s

The State Fair of Virginia’s Heritage Village aims to represent life at the turn of the 20th century, and it needs more artifacts to display.

The goal is to “show life as it was— not necessarily farm-related, but just demonstrating people’s downto-earth existence back then,” said Don Frederick, Heritage Village’s superintendent.

For example, two years ago, part of a kitchen display featured a wooden bowl that someone’s grandmother had used so much that she wore a hole through it, Frederick said. “These items help bring history to life.”

In addition to antique tractors, a blacksmith, a shingle maker and engines that grind corn, Heritage Village features antique items that demonstrate how homeowners, gardeners and farmers lived and worked in the early 1900s.

Examples of display items needed include: • Antique appliances like an apple press or washing machine/ wash board • Antique farm tools • Antique telephone or telegraph • Antique toys • Baskets and brooms • Kitchen items

Exhibitors will receive admission tickets and parking passes. Anyone interested in sharing items can contact Frederick at 757-234-3052 or donpatfred@msn.com.

State Fair of Virginia kicks off Sept. 24, runs through Oct. 3

The State Fair of Virginia is back and ready to host fairgoers! Kicking off with fun and food, the 10-day event will run from Sept. 24 through Oct. 3 at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County.

The fair offers fans the opportunity to take a spin on carnival rides or root for their favorite racing pigs. Guests can expect several fan favorites this year, like chainsaw artist Ben Risney. Strolling acts will provide added entertainment as fairgoers walk through the park.

The fair also will host a variety of live music on the main stage and two nights of rodeo.

And for those seeking iconic fair food, everything from funnel cakes to cotton candy and turkey legs will be available from a variety of food vendors.

The annual event showcases the best of Virginia, including award-winning culinary delights, arts and crafts, and giant pumpkins and watermelons. Virginia agriculture is highlighted through equine and livestock exhibits and competitions as well as the popular Young MacDonald’s Farm in Harvest Landing that features the duck slide, chick incubator and Goat Mountain.

The fair will operate with safety guidelines in place, including a more spread-out footprint, which will allow some social distancing for a fun and safe experience. For ticket information and a fair schedule, visit StateFairVa.org.
