PRECEDENTS STUDIES Virginia Overell 211446
Keep Cup Headquarters, 2019 Collingwood SBLA Studio A central atrium courtyard retrofitted into an warehouse office space. The garden has to remain inaccessible for structural reasons so the designers played off the idea of a botanists cloche. The planting pallette showcases native endangered species: Arachnorchis macroclavia Grevillea wilkonsonii Wollemia nobilis
Ministry of Education and Health, 1936-38 Rio de Janeiro Roberto Burle Marx
The planting profile was shallow through out due to load bearing constraints, with beds ranging from 100mm - 400mm.
One of Burle Marx’s first gardens was a podium project, built on the rooftop of a government building with raised beds placed in an undulating shape, an abstraction of a winding river. Burle Marx would begin the design process in plan through abstract, colour paintings, expanding the experience of this garden to become “as much for the visual pleasure of workers on the floors above as for the users of the garden itself” (MOMA 1991).

DESIGN STATEMENT The plant selections are intended to extend collection or curation as driver from the galleries out into the landscape in turn referencing the nearby Royal Botanic Gardens. As in the collection of the National Gallery, the plant choices attempt to be wide ranging crossing eras from primitive gymnosperms to modern cultivars, native and exotics, playing on colour, texture, scent, sound, light and form creating contrasting and complimentary displays in the changing microclimates across the site.
