AR120 - SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
Advertisement
The AR120, a building located within Tec de Monterrey Campus Monterrey premises, served its function up to march 2023 as a space for the architecture workshops; after finding some mayor structural flaws, its demolition was requested.

The ground floor was made up of a flexible and open space to host talks for students and guests, interdisciplinary collaboration area, and coworking spaces; adjacent to it were the carpentry workshops, C-LAB offices, printing area, and laser cut lab; once upstairs, an open area served as a space to hold workshops.
The proyect proposal responded to chances devised in the Tec21 Educational Model, seeking to unify the space and leave it as a building ready to recieve students, but also ready to become anything else with a collaborative kick. A much more enclosed area was assigned to the bottom level, becoming a more intimate space for smaller workshops and design sessions; the seconf level was designed to be an open area, great for open studio sessions, and allowing users to take a look at the first level when hosting talks or bigger collaborative activities.

Aiming to make the spaces that the School of Architecture, Art, and Design (EAAD, for its spanish acronym) needs to promote the best learning spaces and make thir meeting spaces more efficient, the proposal of closed classrooms on the ground floor for those more theory coursesbecomes stronger, leaving the workshop areas and cowork spaces as open areas upstairs.

In this new iteration of the project, the wooden planks conforming the existing mezzanine are retrieved and reused: the proces would include brushing, and mixing the new flooring with new pieces of banak wood, in hopes of making evident the materials that were there before the intervention and the new materials used. With the same goal in mind, the brick walls on Ground Level are kept exposed, resorting to materials such as exposed concrete in case of needed interventions on these walls; this is how a language of continuity and respect or the gallery that was the home for the School of Architecture at Tec de Monterrey from 2006 to 2023, allowing the open plan with concret shell roofs and wavy slabs to shine before those who experience this space.

Itesm Car Park

With the rennovation of Campus Monterrey leading to the Tec21 model, and with new guidelines proposed by Distrito TEC and Tec de Monterrey, several existing parking lots are lost, which no longer provided enough spaces for the campus population; this leads to the proposal and creation of a new parking space that seeks to satisfy this demand.
A reinforced concrete structure with a rectangular volume is proposed, resulting in two basements, one half basement, and six levels above ground; leaving a total of 953 parking spaces in roughly 31,000m2 of construction.

To enhance the streetscape, a strip of planters and shops sits at the front, creating an active ground floor and ensuring seamless integration with the surrounding environment. The façade showcases an appealing combination of galvanized steel sheets and mesh, strategically arranged to play with light and shadow, while maintaining a permeable and visually engaging appearance. With future vertical expansion potential, the new building offers adaptability for potential offices or teaching spaces, and even opens up the possibility of integrating coworking areas for TEC employees and collaborators.
The overarching goal of this project was to establish strong connections with Distrito TEC's surroundings, promoting pedestrian-friendly pathways and providing convenient access to various amenities, including food and refreshment options at to accompany pedestrians on their walk. The ventilated façade design not only adds a contemporary touch but also lightens the overall appearance of the building. The steel sheets, coated in white electrostatic paint and folded at an angle, create a unique visual effect, further enhancing the aesthetics.
The resulting parking lot project stands as a testament to innovative design, sustainability, and adaptability, fulfilling the needs of Campus Monterrey while contributing to the dynamic and vibrant atmosphere that is already making its way to become the new vibe for Distrito TEC.

By anchoring the shades to a metal frame structure, the assembly process is made more efficient, adding to the durability of the facade; this outer metal structure is fastened to the concrete beams using a chemical anchor system similar to Hilty, ensuring stability and longevity.

CDR [CENTRO DE RADIODIAGNÓSTICO]
A health clinique in Monterrey was in dire need of a makeover, the facility members needed more room to recieve patients and to hold conferences. With this in mind, and knowing the existing area could not solve for the spatial needs, a third floor was made; it was designed with a light steel structure and concrete panels for space divisions, making the assembling procces much faster and efficient, keeping the rest of the clinique functioning as before during the construction process.
I was contacted by the construction leader to model the 3D spaces and generate realistic renders with an accurate look-and-feel for the client to better understand the project.

LOS TOREADOS [COUNTRY HOUSE]
The owners of a small one-story house in the country with beautiful natural surroundings, were looking to rennovate this space and make it more fitting for spending the night and having some friends over.
For this project I made the architectural drawings (plans, sections and elevations) based on the measures taken on site, as well as the 3D model and the renders generated for the clients.

Secret Room
A space to make drinks and enjoy them with friends, play cards, and dominoe with the family, listen to their favorite records together, leave behind the rush of the day, and have some time to themselves; this was the client’s request for this Secret Room, as we began to call it. This room was originally a playroom and had some furniture, but only beige walls and a very unused space under the stairs made it up. Keeping the night vibe that inspired us in mind, it only made sense for the materials to keep up with this darker colors and be full of rich textures: dark woods, leather, black marble, and a dark wavy wall made up the palette for this afternoon spot, giving the room a great makeover, turning this into a great spot for game nights with friends and family.

The niche under the stairs became the bar, covered with copper tinted mirrors and shelves with LED lights to give it a more spacious feeling; giving a full show of the collection bottles on display. This bar would be the new accent wall, making it ideal for some interesting light fixtures. A marble covered working area is left there for preparation, as well as a longer bar for friends to gather round while the hosts mixed their drinks and fixed some snacks; this sitting bar was placed over a stainless steel sheet with an acid wash, giving it another secret detail.

The ceilings featured a ceiling handcrafted by our forger: a metal framework was designed using C-profiles of different sizes to conceal the lamps’ wiring; the light would come out between each profile. To ease installation and future maintenance, they were divided into sections that overlapped the larger C-profiles, resembling rails.

Majano House
At the edge of a mountain, resembling carefully arranged stones, much like a cairn guiding the traveler along their path, you'll find Casa Majano. Inspired by the magic of nature, it nestles amidst winding paths, trees, and ravines. The harmonious blend of its materials, shapes, and its interaction with nature transforms it into an idyllic haven for family life.
Starting from street level, the design unfolds, providing intimacy for family living through various pathways that seamlessly integrate the project with the descending topography. The different spaces of the house take shape and open up to the diverse scenarios and landscapes nature had already crafted on the site.
With a deep appreciation for the enjoyment, respect, and protec tion that nature offers us, the pillars of design and sustainable strategies employed gain greater strength. By optimizing economic and natural resources, they will accompany the Ortiz Lira family on a journey towards a life well-lived through sustainability and harmony with their surroundings.

Looking to create a forever home, our clients came to us looking for the best design that fit their lifestyle; enjoying of life with two girls (a third one possibly in mind), they were hoping for a space that could make them feel at home and let them have all of their friends and family over for festivities and occasional gatherings.
Spotted in a parcel facing a creek, the obvious proposal was to let the backyard flow into this lower ground point; this natural slope, and some french drains bellow ground level, allowed us to channel rainwater organically towards the creek, letting the family rest easy knowing the rare but heavy rains of their hometown would not find their way into their home.
Working closely with engineers and roofing specialists, we found a material solution to an aesthetic concern: balancing the gable roofs and white brick with a dark gray standing seam metal roofing that would be both low-maintenance and a twist on such a classic form.

An insulated dirt brick for exterior walls, insulation wool underneath the metal roofing, an efficient hot water recirculation circuit specially designed for all of the water facilities, and mostly local meterials and suppliers were all proposed to make sure every resource was optimized. All of this helped us make sure themal comfort was always prioritized and the energy needed to run the house was kept at a minimal, helping lower the service bills but, most importantly, minimizing the carbon footprint this home was to have.
