EXECUTIVE COMMENT
President, Vancouver Island Region, PCA, Tim Evans
What a month! August was a very busy month with a gimmick rally, two 25th anniversary picnics, and a lunch & drive. September looks just as busy with a burger night, the Gold River charity drive, New Member Social and a TSD rally. A big thanks to all the volunteers, who make these events possible. Speaking of volunteers, we are actively looking for new members for our Executive team. A few members have stepped up but we still could use more help. Let us know if you would like to be a part of a fun group of members making the Club a continued success. The last and biggest of our 25th anniversary events, the Grand Gala, is planned for Saturday, October 23rd in Victoria at the Hotel Grand Pacific. Registration is now open on MSR and information is posted on the VIR website. This will be a great opportunity to get together, celebrate and raise money for the two charities, Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock and the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade. The 25 Roads challenge ends on September 30th, so you still have time to get out there, tour the island and visit the many great communities that are included in the drives. Yours truly is only five roads away from completing all 25 and with the drives already scheduled, the finish is in sight! Finally, as summer winds down, unfortunately our COVID-19 cases on the Island are increasing. Please be safe and if you haven’t already, I encourage you to get vaccinated so we can continue to get together. Tim Porscher Editor, Steve Fairbrother

s VIR has a fair number of new members recently (welcome!), I
Athought I would revisit our use of MotorsportReg.com. It is a website hosting all our event registrations and provides administrative support in providing reports, credit card processing etc for us. As we are a volunteer club, it has allowed us to manage our events with a limited number of people.
So if you are not enrolled in MSR, please do so (for free) at motorsportreg.com. Our list of events is shown at our private VIR event list. You can also see our future events with their own MSR links in the ’Around the bend’ section on page 58 in this issue. Don’t miss the Grand Gala and New Member Social. Steve

The Parade trip was our first three-week vacation ever, but who counts vacation days after retirement? We rested a bit in August, but made it over to the Oregon Region’s celebration of its 60th and 61st Anniversaries. The weather was beautiful and the food and company were fantastic. Over 100 people brought their Porsches to display while we enjoyed talking to old and new friends, listening to a great band playing music from my era, had some yummy food and listened for our number to be drawn for one of many door prizes. Porsche people are the best. We learned some good news that the Canadian border will reopen just in time to celebrate milestone anniversaries for our three British Columbia regions. I had reported at Parade that Zone 6 was getting over COVID and now were dealing with normal things like drought and wildfires. Just as we were preparing for somewhat normal travel to Canada, the world started experiencing another COVID spike that may affect all of our plans. British Columbia Interior has been hit especially hard with forest fires and COVID. Hang in there. In September and October we hope to help celebrate Canada West’s 45th anniversary on September 25, Silver Sage’s 55th on October 1, Cascade’s 60th on October 16 and Vancouver Island’s 25th on October 23. COVID restrictions may prevent us from attending British Columbia Interior’s anniversary on October 2, but we wish them the best. We have a lot of “birthday parties” this year and hope you all can enjoy them with us. Stay safe and I’ll see you in the Zone. Mark

Over the past month, I attended all three of the 25th Anniversary Picnics, and each was delightful. The lunches, venues and cars were wonderful and it was great to meet and catch up with other members – in person! Well done to all the organizers. I must also give a nod to Mother Nature for obliging us with very good weather.
I also caught up in reporting my 25 Roads drives, all 6 of them. Rowland and I had a lot of fun doing the drives and look forward to completing a few more. We had a particularly memory-making time on Road 15, when we ended up the Lion Rampant Scottish Pub just around dinner time and decided to dine there. What a pleasant spot! It reminded us of some of the places in England that we loved, only with a distinct Vancouver Island flair. We would likely never have found it without 25 Roads.
In my last article, I said I would provide more information about some of the Board vacancies due to come up in October.
Three key roles that I’d like to outline here are Treasurer, Secretary and Membership Chair.
Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for keeping records and accounts that reflect the financial condition and operation of the Region. Other duties include signing or co-signing drafts on the accounts of the Region and any corporate documents which obligate the Region financially. The Treasurer also provides a monthly report to the Board of Directors and an annual report to the Board of Directors and membership. All that is really required is a basic grasp of arithmetic, but accounting experience is beneficial.
Secretary
The Secretary is chiefly responsible for recording and circulating the minutes of Executive Committee meetings. Other duties include preparing the agenda and arranging the logistics of Executive Committee meetings, whether they are held via Zoom, or in person.
In the coming year, the Board would like to see some order brought to the records of the Club, through the development of a Records Management Strategy. Ideally, the Secretary would lead or participate in this process.
Membership Chair
The Membership Chair is chiefly responsible for welcoming new members to the Club, through a welcome e-mail, and provision of a name tag. They also report monthly on new members, Club size, and milestone anniversaries, to the Board and to the membership
through Porscher. This position works with PCA National on membership issues, and can join a PCA Membership Chair Facebook group, which connects Membership Chairs throughout PCA.
This job can expand in accordance with the interests and time of the member filling the position. Typically, the Membership Chair organizes and MCs the New Member Social. The Chair can also identify and/or undertake activities designed to recruit new members, such as displays at non-PCA events.
Want to be VIR President some day?
Any position on the Executive, whether an elected Board position or an appointed Chair, can provide a good grounding in management of the Club, and suitable experience to move into the “top job”. This comes through attending Executive meetings regularly, participating in decision-making and contributing what you can.
All positions come with benefits: good fellowship, a bit of fun, the opportunity to meet people you might not have otherwise, and for new Exec, $50 toward your choice of a VIR garment from the PCA Regional Store.
An important thing to consider is that we all work as a team. If some aspect of the job is a bridge too far, or your life gets complicated for a while, we pull together and just make it work.
More about other positions next month. Garth
